The region and its special characteristics Switzerland was founded in 1291 by an alliance between the rural communes of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden on the Rütli meadow. Today, embedded in a fantastic landscape and surrounded by mountain ranges, the resultant region of Central Switzerland embraces the cantons of Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz, Zug, Obwalden and Nidwalden. The population is forecast to increase in all cantons. Many renowned companies have relocated and settled here thanks to Switzerland’s lowest corporation tax levels and the central location of the region. Not only is the city of Lucerne a flagship for tourists in Switzerland with its worldfamous wooden bridge, the oldest one in Europe, but it is also home to the lion monument, another famous example of Swiss culture.

Central Switzerland boasts 765,879 1 inhabitants, around 10% of the total population of Switzerland. Half of these live in the canton of Lucerne. From the heart of Switzerland, Zurich airport can be reached comfortably within an hour by car, along the newly constructed A4 motorway. Those preferring to use private transport benefit from a good network of roads with excellent connections.

The mountains around Lake Lucerne are highly accessible thanks to the world’s densest network of cable cars. The rotating cable car up Mount Titlis and the world’s steepest rack railway up Mount Pilatus are just two of many tourist attractions in the Central Switzerland region.

Covering some 239 square kilometres, Zug is Switzerland’s smallest canton. Nonetheless, it has much to offer: two idyllic lakes, gently undulating hills and the fantastic slopes of Zugerberg mountain. The Engel & Völkers branch in Zug also covers the Küssnacht am Rigi district (SZ) by Lake Lucerne as well as Kappel and Hausen, two municipalities in the canton of Zurich. Today, Zug is a sought-after residential location, an attractive place to live and an area which is flourishing economically.

In the canton of Schwyz, two districts on the left bank of Lake Zurich, March und Höfe, offer excellent locations with breathtaking views over the lake, an attractive fiscal environment and first-rate transport links to Zurich. The steady and ongoing demand is reflected in property prices here, which have risen moderately across the board. Prices have risen by up to 7% per year for the past ten years. Zug is hence on a par with Zurich and the Gold Coast. Apartments in the neighbouring Schwyz and Zurich districts are less expensive.

Thanks to the attractive location and interesting fiscal environment in the canton of Schwyz, the demand for upscale residential properties has been higher than the supply for several years. This has led to a lively burst of new building activity, which has, however, been well absorbed to date.

Continued, moderate growth is to be expected. Zug benefits hereby from its central location with good transport connection to Zurich, and from low taxes.

In the annual ranking conducted by the Swiss business magazine “Bilanz”, Lucerne repeatedly stars as one of Switzerland’s ten most attractive cities.

Its central location, good fiscal framework and good infrastructure – in the heart of Switzerland, yet connected to the major north-south link (Hamburg-Basel-Chiasso-Milan) – are just a few of the noteworthy advantages of Lucerne Land. The most sought-after municipalities, which include Eich, Sursee and Schenkon, are home to some of the most coveted properties, boasting lake views or even direct lake access.

Lucerne Land is currently experiencing a boom. Particularly the Sursee area, with its good transport links, is more popular than ever before. Due to the limited number of properties for sale in this area, the neighbouring districts are particularly sought-after.

The largest luxury resort in the Swiss alps is currently being developed here. The region will flourish with its ensuing international reputation and high level of desirability. Market development The “Andermatt Swiss Alps” project, with some 4,000 beds and all the comforts one would expect of a luxury resort, will propel tourism into a new era in the region. First and foremost, the skiing areas here will be redeveloped in the future. Nonetheless, property prices in the canton are still moderate and hence have enormous potential for growth.

The region and its special characteristics Eastern Switzerland lies bedded between mountain ranges and Lake Constance. The region includes the cantons of Schaffhausen, Thurgau, St. Gallen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden as well as Glarus. Säntis attract tourists and visitors in winter and summer alike, providing many opportunities for excursions and entertainment. Overall, the Eastern Switzerland region is alpine and diverse. The Rhine Falls, landmark of the canton of Schaffhausen, is the largest waterfall in Europe. The charm of Eastern Switzerland, with its many hiking trails leading through orchards and plantations and past the alpstein massif, offers pure enjoyment and relaxation to all visitors. Culture also plays an important role in Eastern Switzerland. From museums to theatres, the region has plenty to offer. The university in the city of St. Gallen enjoys particular renown. More than 7,000 students are currently enrolled here, attributable largely to its excellent place in university rankings. St. Gallen also houses the Federal Administrative Court. The capital city of the canton of St. Gallen is regarded as the “gateway” to Appenzell, where the Churfirsten peaks rise at a height of 2,000 m above sea level.

Roughly 11.5% of Switzerland’s population lives in Eastern Switzerland. The canton of St. Gallen is home to most of the region’s 929,7522 inhabitants, followed closely by the canton of Thurgau. The population of Eastern Switzerland is also forecast to continue increasing.

From the east side of Switzerland, Zurich Kloten Airport is less than an hour’s drive away, thanks to the excellent network of roads. Owing to excellent rail connections, long distances can be covered in just a short space of time. St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport is located between the cities of Thal and St. Gallen. This is an important hub for air traffic in Switzerland. This is where the wealthy park their private planes, benefitting from the close vicinity to Austria; thanks to its integration in the three-country border area, Germany and Austria are both very close.

Economically and culturally, the city of St. Gallen is the centre of the region. When the Federal Administrative Court relocated from Bern to St. Gallen, there was a noticeable and considerable increase in demand across the board in the property market. A new and interesting employer appeared on the scene when the Würth Group settled in the Lake Constance region. The current trend to building new rental and freehold apartments will have only a moderate effect in counteracting the increase in prices.

The Appenzell region is the retreat area for the nearby cities of Wil and St. Gallen. Only a few villages are populated densely enough to be classed as small towns. Peace and recreational value are the essential criteria in demand.

The region and its special characteristics Embedded in the Swiss central plateau lies the financial and economic centre that is Zurich.

With around 170,000 inhabitants, the Winterthur region is an independent centre in the Zurich economic area. The region and its special characteristics The Principality of Liechtenstein is a separate state bordering Switzerland to the west. One characteristic feature of Liechtenstein is the royal castle on a rock terrace above Vaduz, from where state authority is exercised in conjunction with the people.
