Calvia Local Police arrested seven people over the weekend in various incidents on suspicion of violent robbery and drug trafficking. One of the detainees was a Senegalese man who was allegedly caught trying to sell marijuana and cocaine to a tourist on a terrace.

Bought and returned THE number of items purchased by instalments and returned due to lack of payment in the Balearics increased by 5.94 per cent in April compared to the same month last year. Hotel staff to help file crime reports By Nicole Hallett AROUND 100 hotels in Mallorca can now help guests fill out denuncias (crime reports). This is part of a pilot scheme starting this week. If deemed a success it will be rolled out in all hotels across the island. “If a guest has been the victim of a crime, they can fill in the report at their
hotel with the help of staff who can translate for them,” explained government delegate Jose Maria Rodriquez. “They only need to go to the station to sign the report.” Staff at the participating hotels attended a course on how to fill out the reports and help guests. When tourists wish to fill out a police report, hotel personnel can do it via

National Police web portal or in the case of a Guardia Civil report, they fill out a form and send it to the barracks, according to the president of the Mallorca Hotel Federation, Inma de Benito. Until now, hotel workers could only inform tourists on where the nearest station was. On many occasions tourists would not go and fill out a crime report, according to Benito.

THE number of businesses created in the Balearics in April plummeted 37.9 per cent compared to the month before. In March this year, 302 new businesses were created, while in April this fell to 219. However, this is 4.7 per cent more than the 209 created in April 2011, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). On a national level, the 6,843 new businesses created in April this year is 21.6 per cent less than in March, but 0.8 per cent more than April 2011.

Nine die from melanoma in Balearics each year EACH year, nine people die of melanoma in the Balearic Islands, according to president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), Teresa Martorell. Between 80 and 110 cases are diagnosed each year. This is expected to increase this year with at least 140 cases, of which 57 are women and 82 men, according to estimates from the Mallorca Cancer Register. In the past 20 years, the number of males getting melanoma has tripled while the number of women has stabilised. Of the nine people who die each year in the Balearics, four are women and five men.

They argue that privatisation measures should be postponed for a year, which would give them time to look for alternatives. The change of management would mean that some teachers will no longer work at these schools. For example, seven teachers at the s’Arenal school would be transferred to other schools, the associations estimated. The remaining 13 interns’ contracts will come to term at the end of August.

celebrities, royalty and had a brush with the underworld. Nicole Hallett reports.
Globetrotting nightclub owner settles with wife Cynthia Lennon in Mallorca EWN EXCLUSIVE AT 72 years of age, Noel Charles has looked back down the years and written an autobiography. His tale takes us from the Caribbean to various European countries where he lived the highlife for a decade, dining with some of the world’s greatest entertainers. These include Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elton John, George Harrison, Tom Jones, David Bailey, Sidney Poitier, and Jack Nicholson. He was able to meet these stars through his work in nightclubs. It all started when he became social secretary for the student union at the London School of Economics, which he started in 58, but never finished. “Because of that I put on school proms and got a flair for the night,” said Charles. “I went to this club called The Cromwellian. It was beautiful, but empty. The owner heard that I had said ‘the person who runs this must be an idiot’ and called me in, eventually hiring me to run the club. “Within three months of handing out VIP membership cards to welldressed people or good dancers I met at other clubs, they were queuing up outside The Cromwellian.” Two years after taking over the management of the club, Charles got a call from the Kray twins, the leaders of organised crime at the time, to pay them

Things got nasty when the owners refused to pay up. They sent six people down, but Tony Mitchell – the club owner – got his wrestling friends to come down and there was a fight. After that I wanted out, so went to Mallorca.” It was here he met his first wife, a Swedish girl, and followed her to Stockholm in 67. “In those days Stockholm did not have a discotheque, so I decided to open one, calling it Alexandra.” Not only was it Charles’ first nightclub, but the first
in Sweden. “It became the number one place in the whole of Scandinavia and all the Royals came to the club,” said Charles, “including Carl Gustavo - who is now King of Sweden – and his sisters.” His nightclub ventures expanded following a meeting with a trade commission from Barbados who was visiting Prime Minister, Erol Barrow. “He said they needed something like this to kickstart their tourism industry,” said Charles. “So he invited me down as a guest of the
government in 69 and I opened a nightclub in Barbados, also called Alexandra’s in 72, which was successful.” After his marriage went ‘sour’ in Barbados, he
moved to Mustique and then Toronto, where he met his second wife, with whom he has a daughter. He moved to New York for a bit before heading back to Stockholm, then
London to open an Alexandra’s club and then back to Barbados to manage a club called Baku. His second marriage did not last either, but it was third time lucky when he met Cynthia Lennon – John Lennon’s ex-wife - who was introduced by her son Julien. Charles had met Julien in London at a club called Tramps and invited him to Barbados to get away from it all, which he did, for four months. While there are interesting stories of his experiences with celebrities he has met, this is not a ‘kiss and tell’ story; it is the story of Noel Charles’ life, its highs and lows and his journey of self discovery that took a lifetime.

mother would not let him in the house when he told her he had left his computer at his friend’s house. So, he went to his aunt’s house to see if she would let him spend the night, but she told him he should go to his mother’s and sleep there. The punishment took place upon his return. He managed to escape and went back to his aunt who called the police when she saw his injuries. He was taken to Son Llatzer Hospital. This was not the first time his mother had abused him, according to police, and in November 2009 she was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. In January 2005 she was arrested for the corruption of minors, sexual abuse and exhibitionism. Following an argument with her boyfriend she reportedly had sex with two men in front of his daughter, and on another occasion, when the girl was 12, she allowed another minor to get her drunk and have sex with her.

THE demand for holiday rentals in Mallorca increased 22 per cent in May thanks to British tourism. In Menorca the demand increased by 13 per cent. Both of these results were less than the Spanish average of a 24 per cent increase. There were 63 per cent more requests for rental apartments from British tourists compared to last year, according to data from the holiday rental company Homelidays. The demand from German tourists increased by 51 per cent and from Dutch tourists 32 per cent in the first five months of the year. National demand increased by 20 per cent.
Gang of ‘shoplifters’ arrested after targeting businesses
EIGHT Romanians believed to be responsible for shoplifting in more than 30 establishments were arrested in Palmanova. They targeted businesses in Palmanova, Santa Ponça and Paguera. Four of them were women. The gang would reportedly carry out the robberies in groups of three or four people, posing as tourists, and always with at least one woman present. Two of them would distract the employees and clients while a third would steal items. The fourth would be waiting in a getaway vehicle parked outside the establishment. They would then change clothes in order to confuse the victims, possible witnesses and police. All of the detainees stay in hotels in the area of S’Arenal in Llucmajor and Can Pastilla in Palma de Mallorca.

AN INCREASING number of Spain’s fighting bulls are now dying in the abattoir rather than at the hands of matadors. For with bullfights nationally falling in the last five years by more than 45 per cent, many breeders are now cutting their losses and sending fighting-bull herds to a quicker death. Nikki Beach new resort FOLLOWING four months of intensive work, Melia Hotels International opened the Magalluf Beach House Hotel. SPAIN’S gender abuse laws favour women although men are victims, too. In the past five years, 32 men were killed by partners, compared to 335 women. This could account for the absence of
investigations into male domestic abuse, experts believe. It also explains why so little help is available for male victims, they say. But on many occasions, men do not seek it. Of approximately 130,000 formal complaints of gender abuse received each year, only 2 per cent come from men and 15 per cent are later withdrawn. They find it humiliating to acknowledge that a partner has beaten them and admit that they are afraid, according to the experts. When assistance is sought, they often receive scant attention. Males calling Madrid’s 016 helpline, for
instance, are referred to social services. In 2011, 61 women and seven men died in domestic violence incidents, reported the General Judiciary Council’s Domestic Violence Observatory. Two of the men were killed by a male partner, one of whom committed suicide afterwards. The other tried unsuccessfully to take his own life, said the CGPJ report. One woman poisoned her partner and was detained following a police investigation. Two others confessed immediately afterwards and a fourth made an anonymous call to the emergency services. A fifth woman set fire
to the home of her expartner while he was trapped inside and was arrested after she was involved in a car accident. She had previously denounced him for illtreatment, a factor which frequently produces lower sentences, with fear and self-defence accepted as mitigating circumstances. Legislation is weighted in favour of women, pointed out Victor Martinez Paton, a lawyer specialising in male domestic abuse. Death threats from a male to a female partner are considered grounds for arrest while a woman’s threats are classed as a demeanour, he complained.

According to the Bank of Spain, more than half of Spain’s €348 billion commercial real estate loans are either in foreclosure or in serious doubt of collection. The government has now admitted that it will need aid for its struggling banks. Here’s a review of recent events. Bankia, which was formed in 2010 from seven weak savings banks and holds more than 10% of deposits in Spain’s banking system, has the biggest exposure to bad property debt. On 7th May the finance ministry disclosed that it was preparing to refinance the bank. The Prime Minister said he no longer ruled out using taxpayers’ money to support ailing banks to avert a crisis and restore confidence. The Bank of Spain converted its €4.5 billion interest in Bankia thereby acquiring a 45% controlling stake. It is also injecting billions of Euros into it - Bankia has asked for €19 billion. On 11th May the government introduced new rules obliging Spanish banks to set aside an extra €30 billion in 2012 in case property sector loans go bad. This is on top of the €53.8 billion they were asked to set aside in February. The government will also audit banks’ exposure to the property sector and has said it would

force banks to move seized property assets from their balance sheets and place them in separate agencies. Credit ratings agency Moody’s downgraded 16 Spanish banks on 17th May, citing adverse operating conditions; assetquality deterioration; restricted market funding access and the reduced ability of the Spanish government to provide support to the sector. It also downgraded Santander UK, though not as low as parent bank Banco Santander. It highlighted that the UK bank has no direct exposure to the Spanish government. Spain’s banking sector was hit by more bad news at the end of May when data published by the Bank of Spain revealed that €97 billion in capital had been pulled out of Spain over the first quarter of the year. On 5th June Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy finally
acknowledged that Spain was “in an extremely difficult position” and called on Europe to stand by its obligations of Euro membership. Separately, Treasury minister Cristobel Montoro said that “the market is no longer open” for Spain to raise money to refinance its debt and European institutions “must open up and help us facilitate bank recapitalisations”. Here in Spain, as the rest of the EU, the bank deposit guarantee is €100,000. This is per depositor per each credit institution. If a bank collapses the local scheme – the Fondos de Garantia de Depositos (FDG) in Spain – will refund your savings up to the limit. If your savings exceed €100,000 you will continue as an ordinary creditor of the institution for the amount not recovered from the FGD. How much you receive and when would depend how the institution is wound up and its debts settled. In the UK, under the Financial Service Compensation Scheme (FSCS) depositors have the first £85,000 of their savings with any one bank protected. Bank deposits in the Channel
Islands or Isle of Man are not covered by the UK FSCS or EU rules, even if they are divisions of UK banks, and have their local guarantee schemes. The compensation limit in the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey is £50,000. They have an overall “cap” on the amount they need to pay out. The maximum Jersey and Guernsey will pay out is £100 million in any five year period. If claims exceed this, compensation will be reduced pro rata. The Isle of Man’s cap is £200 million. Jersey and Guernsey will aim to pay compensation within three months, while the Isle of Man has no time limit for payment - how much you receive and when would depend on the size of the failed bank and the amount of funding contributed to the Depositors’ Compensation Scheme. For peace of mind, establish what protection your savings and investments have in the event of institutional failure, whatever the type and wherever they are held. It can vary considerably. Since the 2008 credit crunch many savers have spread their
deposits over more than one banking group. Others have moved capital into alternate arrangements that provide a higher level of protection. For example Luxembourg offers the maximum possible investor protection available to life insurance policyholders through a state sponsored investor protection regime known as “The Triangle of Security”. If you have an investment bond issued by a Luxembourg regulated insurance company, your investment assets are completely protected should the insurance company fail. The regime offers complete segregation of clients’ assets from either the creditors of the insurance company or any of its custodian banks. WHILE the performance of the Rojales Pantomime’s production of ‘The Wizard of OZ’ in Los Montesinos was enjoyable and entertaining, it was marred by a couple of British children. They were left to their own devices, running up and down and clambering onto the stage, continuously shouting “I’m bored” and using foul language. It got so bad that several members of the audience shouted at them to ‘shut up’. They did quieten down when a member of the production came from backstage and sat behind them, but where were the parents? In my day if I carried on like that I’d have been taken home straight away, no doubt with a clip round my ear. I am aware that this would be considered child abuse in this day and age, but come on, parents, have some consideration for the other patrons and the actors on stage. Healthy lesson IT is dreadful that school dinners in Spain are laden with sugar and lack vegetables, pulses and fish (Costa del Sol, Issue 1405). Surely helping children eat healthier will put less of a burden on the health sector when they are older as there will be fewer with obesity-related illnesses. Lap of luxury AFTER reading the front page article about the Marbella Luxury Weekend (Costa del Sol, Issue 1405) my husband and I decided to go and see what all the fuss was about. Although we have lived on the coast for more than a decade it has been many years since we visited Puerto Banus. It was interesting to see that many people were dressed in normal clothing, but the wealth that was on display was astounding; it was like walking into the lap of luxury, a whole different world. While it seems sinful such money was being spent on frivolous things when so many people are struggling to make ends meet, the money is going back into the economy and to businesses that can then offer jobs. Despite living in Spain I am extremely proud to be British and equally so with regards to our heritage. This type of letter is written by a person who typifies what is wrong with society in Great Britain and many other countries; a lack of pride and respect. History tells us both in recent times and over the millennia that great empires have come and gone. Staycation time I FOUND the article about people in Malaga Province opting for ‘staycations’ (Costa del Sol, Issue 1405) very interesting. In these tough times it makes perfect sense to holiday close to home, especially in a climate that draws millions of tourists each summer. I find that when you live in a country you tend to see less of what is on offer than many tourists, so why not don the holidaymaker cap and go see all the tourist hotspots as well as out of the way places. Enjoy some of the many activities on offer. Not only will you have fun, but you will be injecting money back into your community rather than spending it further afield. Raising limits I REALLY hope that the Development Ministry puts the speed limit on the A7 between Mijas and Marbella up to 100km/hour from the current 80km/hour as requested by both municipalities’ town halls (Costa del Sol, Issue 1405). Either that or reduce the charge on the toll road, or perhaps offer a reduced rate for residents. These measures would help reduce commuting times for workers and even those who live in Mijas and who would like a quicker trip to Marbella. LP, Mijas (Malaga)
Happy-go-looky THE article ‘Bogus items seized up by 50% in 12 months’ (Costa del Sol, Issue 1405) confirmed my suspicions that there are more looky-looky men around than there used to be. This is probably because those that previously managed to find other jobs have lost them, finding themselves back on the street selling these counterfeit goods. I am pretty sure that this is not their dream job and they do it out of necessity. However, you can barely go out on the street without coming across dozens of them. Most will move on when you say no, others are annoyingly persistent. The nicest one I have seen was in Torremolinos. He wore an oversized shirt and had all his wares stuffed in it, balloons held high and was singing while blowing bubbles, looking like he was having a great time. Bullet-proofing I WAS surprised when I read the article on police vests (Costa Blanca North, Issue 1405). It said the Local Police force is spending €9.7 million on 20,500 bulletproof and stab vests. I had assumed that police officers already wore them. Surely anyone in a job that puts them in contact with criminals who can have knives and sometimes guns should automatically be issued with one. FOR what it’s worth and at the risk of being considered an out-oftouch, senile old cynic, I thought the so-called ‘crowning glory’ of the jubilee celebrations, namely the concert in The Mall, was nothing short of pathetic. Gary Barlow may be a member of one of the biggest boy groups in history and been reinvented as an X Factor judge, but to my mind comes out with a loud red buzzer in the production stakes. She graduated from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden with a bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science and obtained her Unlimited Masters Licence, enabling her to command virtually any ship of any size. Karin Stahre-Janson made nautical history when she was appointed captain of cruise ship Serenade of the Seas. Sailing out of Barcelona, Benny Davis went to see what makes her so unique.
Meet world’s first female cruise ship captain as a first officer. I recently had the pleasure of meeting the lady while on-board the Serenade of the Seas, sailing out of Barcelona. Though virtually committed from dawn to dusk, this likeable ship’s master agreed to give me some of her precious time. Q: When did you get your first job at sea?
Captain Stahre-Janson at the helm. A: I had just turned 19. It was a small petroleum tanker. I painted chipped rust, scrubbed the decks and whatever needed to be done. I loved it and enrolled in cadet school. You were a woman breaking into a very male-dominated world. Was there resistance? I am not a feminist, but I don’t back down because I know my job. I just put my own female twists and turns
into the command. What do you think has held women back from commanding a cruise ship until now? Back in the ’40s and ’50s, it was hard, muscular work, and very maledominated. These days it’s all about brains and knowledge, although I could put quite a few of my fellow mariners down without breaking sweat. How does the crew react? I have worked in a variety of Royal Caribbean officer-related roles since 1997 and many mariners were old friends. Also our guests are very positive. I had an old lady the other day pat me on the head, which is hard since I’m 5’11”! What is your average day on board? I get up at 4.30am and if in port, prepare the ship to sail. Then check ship’s speed, position and daily log. I also hold many meetings, attend dinners, special passenger ceremonies and apart from fire, ship’s damage and extreme weather conditions, these days a ship’s captain also has to be aware of any terrorist threats. What do you do in your spare time? I retire to my parents’ summer house in Sweden, do some carpentry,

The simple pleasures WHAT is the difference between a canoe and a kayak? You think you know, and then when you start to try to explain it to yourself you realise you haven’t a clue! Kayaks (or canoes) are big stuff in Mallorca this weekend as come Sunday you won’t be able to swing a cat without hitting a canoe (or kayak) down on the beach at Sant Elm in Andratx. This weekend sees the annual Volta a Dragonera which is in its 20th year. It’s kind of like the leisure craft version of a flash mob. About 700 (yes, you did read that correctly: seven HUNDRED) canoes will be launched from the beach at Sant Elm on Sunday morning. Why? For the hell of it really. It is a non competitive event, no one is declared the winner at the end of it, unless you want to go for ‘you’ve all taken part, you’re ALL winners’ left wing primary school teacher attitude. Kick off or push off is at 9am on the Sunday, and you know what? I will be there. Not in any participatory way, but in a ‘support team’ capacity as my husband is finally going to do it.

We’ve lived in Mallorca for eight years, and every single year he has wanted to do it and then been prevented in some way from participating. (The non ownership of a canoe has been a major factor to be honest). I’ve been trying to think of a clever way of combining the phrase ‘paddle your own canoe’ which means to do things for yourself without outside help, with the news of the recent €100 billion bailout. But the Dragonera canoeing extravaganza is such a simple, innocent, and lovely activity I don’t want to
come across all clever about it. You shouldn’t miss it, and that’s all I have to say about it. Paddlers come from all over the island, the Balearics, the mainland and even Europe to participate. Everyone gets a t-shirt, a sandwich and a nice morning out paddling around a nature park. What’s not to like? Simple pleasures win again. By the way, I did look up the differences, for the kayak or canoe aficionado (or pedant): open top kayaks are generally used in the ocean, some kayaks have rudders, canoes can carry more than two people, a single person could paddle a double canoe, but not a double kayak. Kayaks sit lower in the water, you will not find a metal kayak although aluminium canoes are common, and finally, kayaks generally appear smaller. So, if this floats your boat then why not join them on the beach on Sunday morning? But don’t complain about having to get up early on Sunday, you can’t have your kayak and eat it.

For a percentage of hunting dogs life is a lot tougher. Longer-living ladies eat well and stay fit

LDERLY women who eat a healthy diet and stay physically active live longer. Women in their 70s who ate plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and exercised, lived five years longer than those who were sedentary and ate little fresh produce, a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found. Researchers in America at the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins University analysed data from 713 women aged 70 to 79. They measured blood levels of carotenoids; the more fruits and vegetables eaten, the higher the levels in the bloodstream.
Physical activity was measured through a questionnaire, which was converted into the number of calories used. They were followed-up five years later to establish the links between healthy eating, exercise and survival rates. It was found that 11.5 per cent of
the women in the study had died, but carotenoid levels in the survivors were 12 per cent higher and physical exercise was twice as high. Women in the most active group had a 71 per cent lower five-year death rate than those in the least active group. Those in the highest carotenoid group had a 46 per cent lower five-year death rate than women in the lowest carotenoid group. However, too much exercise can ‘hurt the heart’ and cause dangerous longterm harm, another study found. The safe ‘upper limit’ for heart health is a maximum of an hour a day, after which there is little benefit.

N the face of it the Japanese yen is a useless investment currency. Interest rates have been near-zero for as long as anyone can remember. The country is still working its way out of an economic slowdown aggravated by last year’s earthquake and tsunami (though the economy did return to growth in the first quarter of 2012). Japanese equity prices are at similar levels to 29 years ago. The national debt is around 250 per cent of gross domestic product, far more than the United States’ 100 per cent and bigger even than Greece’s 180 per cent. Despite all that, investors see Japan as a safe place for their money. They are confident that if they put their cash there, they will get it back intact. It is for this reason that the yen has been the best-performing major currency for the last two months. In April it strengthened by 2 per cent against the pound; in May it went up by 6 per cent. The yen’s gains against the euro over those two months are even more impressive; 4 per cent and 8 per cent. Sterling’s progress was a more modest 2 per cent for each month. Investors see Germany as a safe haven for their money, too. In late

Nevertheless, although investors are happy enough with Germany they are
rather less comfortable with the euro. An abortive Greek general election in early May failed to produce a workable government and there is no guarantee that the re-run in mid-June will be any more successful. It could result in an anti-austerity government and Greece’s departure from the single currency. Nobody can say how such an exit would work but there is general agreement that it would be expensive and messy. There is growing nervousness about Spain, too. Many of the banks there are nursing big losses, especially on their loans to property developers and speculators. One, Bankia, needs a cash injection of €19bn and there are undoubtedly others yet to come out of the woodwork. Unfortunately, Bankia is so
badly damaged that it has no chance of getting the money from investors. Spain’s government would be happy to oblige but it does not have the cash and is unable to borrow it at any affordable rate of interest. The European Central Bank says Spanish banks are Spain’s problem, not its own. Prime Minister Rajoy would like the Euroland bail-out funds to lend the money direct to Bankia; Germany says that is unacceptable because it puts taxpayers’ money at risk. It is surely inevitable that Brussels, Madrid and Berlin will cobble together a plan; the danger of allowing the bank to fail is too great. But in the meantime Bankia’s only survival strategy is to offer a Spiderman towel to young customers who still have €300 in their accounts at the end of the month. EU leaders might club together and find swift solutions for the problems of Greece and Spain. However, a successful and happy resolution is by no means guaranteed, hence investors’ nervousness about the euro and their appetite for the yen.

If we could party all night… I
MUST be a tramp, because - as Tony Bennett proclaimed - I get ‘too hungry for dinner at 8’, so it was with some trepidation that my husband and I accepted our first invitation to dinner in Mallorca. Boxes and bags barely unpacked, we bid farewell around 7pm to the solemn troop of children and dog, while the new babysitter jovially waved goodbye, telling us not to worry. A little early, perhaps, but then there may be traffic en route to the gastronomic restaurant in Palma. Plain sailing and some 30 minutes later, we are twiddling our G&Ts in the bar - just the two of us - the actual reservation time a little vague and still some way off. By 8.30pm, we have discovered the reason tapas were invented: to keep people like us from starving to death while waiting. Tick, tock and still no sign of our new Spanish friends. On my third G&T, I have struck up a lifelong friendship with the longsuffering bartender, who suddenly looks like George Clooney. My jokes are top of the range; at least I am laughing like a hyena; but Pedro (I think that is his

our first dishes finally appear. All a bit late, since my hunger has by now vanished in a torrent of booze, not seen since my university days. It was illadvised then, too. Round 1 in the madrugada, as it is so eloquently called here, the livening effects of the drinks are wearing off and stifling yawns is my main preoccupation. The box of matches tentatively catches my eye; maybe I could prop up the lids
so as not to fall asleep and snore in one of the finest establishments in Mallorca? Even a double espresso falls short of relighting my fire. “The night is young!” my fellow guests exclaim, insisting on a round of curious little drinks called hierbas. At 2am we shamefully saunter back into the house to the chirpy babysitter professing “You're early!” The next morning my surprisingly lively dinner friends call me - from work - to explain how we had missed a fabulous night of dancing until the amanecer and how next time, we really must join them. I start to think that my new fellow countrymen have super powers and, unlike the rest of humanity, survive on a mere two hours sleep. If there were a score for stamina, mine would surely be C: ‘must try harder’. Something has to be done to adjust to this new nocturnal world. I had always thought the siesta allowed the residents of such a balmy country to seek rest and shade during the hottest hours, but having endured a Mallorcan winter, this is not the whole story. So next time I am preparing to party all night, I, too, shall add a wee nap to my repertoire and be able to have dinner at 11pm like the best of the rest, regardless of what Tony Bennett has to say on the subject.

HAVE a friend who is a very famous comedian and he tells me that people always say this to him, even when he is in the supermarket and not in the mood to be funny. I have another friend who is a singer and he is always being asked to ‘give us a tune’ at parties. If he turns up to a bash without his guitar there are frowns and scowls all round. I find this rather odd and unfair. Entertainers may have enjoyable and sometimes seemingly glamorous jobs, but it is still work to them and their time off is when they want

gang of stalwart entertainers that tip up again and again to help out with charity concerts here on the island. I would like to personally thank them all for the pleasure they give to others and the support they show to many charitable organisations here and elsewhere. A few of them will be volunteering again soon to sing at the Age Concern Mallorca summer bash at Meson Son Ferrer on Saturday June 23. Jackie Codd from the charity collared me at the previously mentioned Scottish Corner knees up and asked me to help out. Without any need for arm twisting at all I managed to rope a couple

Religions fail to rate IBI EVANGELICALS, Jews and Muslims are seconding the Catholic Church’s resistance to paying rates (IBI). NE of the most important new models in the history of ŠKODA is now on sale. The new Citigo marks the start of a new era in the company’s 117-year history. It’s also the first new model to wear ŠKODA’s revised ‘winged arrow’ corporate badge. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine comes with a power output of either 61 or 76HP. It also has the option of GreenTech fuel-saving technologies which include a stop/start and brake energy recuperation. VOLKSWAGEN showcased the Scirocco GTS at the Auto Mobil International show in Leipzig, Germany. It’s been 30 years since the Scirocco GTS first came off the production line. It has the look of it’s predecessor, with coloured stripes running up the bonnet, roof and tailgate. Also unique to the model are the custom front and rear bumpers, exposed side sills, and black 18-inch alloy wheels. Under the bonnet is the 2.0-litre 213 HP TSI engine. The interior is dominated by red and black, and there is also a dimpled golfball gear lever knob. This wasn’t just a feature of the first Golf GTI, but also the 1982 Scirocco GTS.
The price of Scirocco GTS is still to be confirmed; however, the current Scirocco is priced from €20,100.

One of my top 10 players to watch, Polish striker Robert Lewandowski scored the first goal of the tournament; each side had a player sent-off and Giorgos Karagounis missed a penalty for Greece (saved by substitute ‘keeper Przemyslaw Tyton. • The second game saw one of my favourites to win overall, Russia, whip the Czech Republic 4-1. Alan Dzagoev and Roman Pavlyuchencko scored super goals for the winners but star of the show was Andrei Arshavin. No-one could match him for skill. • Denmark caused the first major shock, beating a disappointing Netherlands team 1-0 and soon afterwards Germany got off to a winning start with a single goal victory over Portugal, Mario Gomez on target in the 72nd minute. • Holders and favourites Spain started their campaign with 1-1 draw with Italy; a poor Republic of Ireland side lost 3-1 to Croatia while England and France also drew 1-1 and hosts Ukraine (with two Andrei Shevchenko headers) beat Sweden 2-1. • Yesterday there was a crunch match in Group B between Holland and Germany while Spain play the Republic of Ireland tonight in Group C.
