Protecting your rights
ENSURING the rights of British expatriates will be protected, deal or no-deal Brexit, is a top priority, British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley has made clear. Speaking exclusively to the Euro Weekly News following the British Parliament’s crushing defeat of Teresa May’s Brexit deal, the Ambassador described the vote as “a disappointment.” But he stressed that whatever the final scenario of the UK’s departure from the European Union, the British government is working to guarantee British nationals in Spain will have the same rights and benefits as they do now. Admitting the agreement reached with the EU is not ideal, Mr Manley did insist it is a good deal, also pointing out, “the European Union has been very clear it’s the only deal.” He insisted that for British nationals in Spain “it’s a particularly good deal, because it gives the utmost legal certainty. “The things embodied in that withdrawal agreement in respect of citizens’ rights are not new - they’re within the political agreements we reached back in December 2017 and then again in March 2018. “But the importance of the withdrawal agreement is that it embodies those agreements, the guarantees about the continuity of citizens’ rights in an international legal treaty, and therefore gives you greater force of law. So that’s why particularly in respect to citizens’ rights we want to ensure that we get that deal.” On the matter of whether a no-deal Brexit is now a real possibility, the Ambassador commented, “It is true to say that the risk of no-deal has risen as a result of the vote,” but added: “As the

Prime Minister made clear it is not, has not been and will not be the government’s intention to leave without a deal, and the government will strive to come to a deal which can have the support of the House of Commons.” Mr Manley stressed that deal or no deal, the “good news” for British nationals living here is that the UK government has said it will protect the rights of EU 27 nationals currently resident in Britain, at the heart of which is the EU Settlement Scheme, and now the Spanish government has come up a with a similar statement of intent. It has published details in the form of a basis of what will become a royal decree, also establishing a ‘prepared for Brexit’ section on its Moncloa website, which went live last week. “It is fair to say there are areas where we’d like a bit more clarity on what is intended,” the Ambassador said, but made it clear discussions were taking place “to ensure the Spanish offer is genuinely reciprocal of what we’re doing in the UK. “We want to make sure people can enjoy the same rights and benefits in the two countries.” See page 10.

Big screen favourites together again TWO of Spain’s hottest movie stars, Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, are reuniting to take lead roles in Sony Pictures’ upcoming film, Dolor y Gloria (Pain and Glory). The movie is directed by Pedro Almodovar, who took the reins of the last film the pair starred in together, I’m so Excited, in 2013. A trailer - more a collection of unconnected scenes - kicks off with a shot of 58-year-old Banderas’ character, film director ‘in decline’ Salvador Mallo, sitting at the bottom of a pool.

along with a cryptic shot of text reading El Primer Deseo (The First Desire). It seems to imply 48-yearold Cruz’s character is Mallo’s mother as he reflects on his life. While Banderas only starred in I’m So Excited, Cruz has been in six of Almodovar’s films over the years, including Live Flesh in 1997, followed by All About My Mother in 1999.

REAL MADRID star Sergio Ramos is to marry his model and TV presenter girlfriend Pilar Rublo in June. One of the hottest footballers in La Liga will tie the knot with Spani s h FHM’s Sexiest Woman in the World 2008 and 2009, in Sevilla. The stunning couple d u b b e d Spain’s Posh
and Becks - announced their engagement on Spanish TV show El Hormiguero, where Ramos, 32, revealed ‘it’s going to be a special wedding because we’re special.’ Rublo is a presenter on the show, and tweeted afterwards: “Every day at the studio is special, unique and magical, but yesterday was something else. It was exciting to have my love Sergio on set and see him enjoy it so much.” The defender and his 40-year-old girlfriend have three children together. Ramos said getting engaged is ‘a very special moment for us after being together for so long and forming such a fantastic family’. A star-studded guest list is inevitable, and anybody invited will be asked to leave mobiles and cameras at the door of the secret wedding location, ‘so that celebrities attending the after party can enjoy themselves without fear of being snapped.’ The excited pair got together in 2012. Prior to that, Ramos dated a former Miss Spain.

Rock returns to Estepona by John Smith AS bands become more popular, they tend to only tour at very big venues around the world with prices that can be painful for their fans. In addition of course, age and extreme behaviour can also play its part in decimating a group, so followers have to rely on recordings and DVDs. There is a whole new breed of dedicated tribute bands who reproduce the music of their heroes and play to large audiences at prices which are affordable. The first Pink Purple Zep Festival which was held at the Estepona Bull Ring in 2017 featured three of these bands, Deeper Purple, Whole Lotta Led and Think Floyd to a good sized audience of expats and local Spanish rock fans. Ian Grant who has lived on the Costa del Sol for many years and was a member of Deeper Purple organised the event which proved to be extremely popular. Now he has expanded it to a two-night concert also at the
DEEPER PURPLE: Will be performing in Estepona. Estepona Bull Ring with three additional bands, Foo Fighters GB, Guns2Roses and AC/BC who will appear on Friday June 28 whilst the three bands who played in 2017 will make a welcome return on Saturday June 29. According to Ian in a conversation with Euro Weekly News, he learned a great deal from the experience of running the first event and this knowledge will be incorporated in the Pink Purple Zep Festival II to ensure that all visitors have a great time. Tickets for a single night start at €20 for seats at the top of the stand, €30 standing in
the arena, €40 for first tier seating and €125 for very limited VIP tickets which give all sorts of special advantages to those who want the complete experience. LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. If you are planning on living in Spain on a permanent basis, it’s a good idea to have a Spanish driving licence - in fact it is mandatory after a while. Here are some guidelines for current and new drivers on how to do this quickly and easily. If you already have a valid EU (European Union) Community or an EEA (European Economic Area) driving licence and meet the minimum driving age in Spain,#you can use it for the first two years of residence in Spain, although you must register your details with the traffic authorities after six months. You can register at your Central Register of Drivers and Minor Offenders of the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. If you don’t obtain a Spanish driver’s licence after two years of residence in Spain and are caught driving, you can face a fine of around €200. Visit: www.dgt.es to find out more. Once the process is under way, you will have to adhere to the same conditions as Spanish licence holders: Have reached minimum age in Spain for the specific category of vehicle you want to drive, Relevant medical checks, Renew or exchange the licence after the first two years’ residence in Spain. If an EU licence is renewed in Spain it effectively converts it into a Spanish EU licence, which then needs to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and every five years after 65.

The new regulation which requires new residents to exchange their licences for a Spanish one, was enforced three years ago. As such, Spain has agreements with more than 20 countries, allowing drivers to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for its equivalent. To find out more, check with your home country’s consulate in Spain or the#Spanish Traffic Authority at www.sede.dgt.gob.es. To exchange your licence, you will need to fill out an application form that is issued by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. (See the above website). The following documents will be required: Proof of identity#(original passport and a copy), Proof of your residence for six months#(Certificate of Registration in the Central Aliens Register - the NIE number), Application form#(in Spanish), Current valid driving licence to be exchanged#(original and a copy), Written declaration stating that#you don’t have another driving licence of the same class in another country, Written declaration stating that#you have not been suspended or banned, Two recent passport size photographs#(32 by 25 mm), Medical fitness report#(visit the DGT website for information). For new drivers, check the legal driving ages and permit types before you register. You can get details depending on what type of vehicle you want to drive by visiting: Englishdriving-school.com. The best option (for new drivers) is to go to a driving school as they take care of the registration process with the Jefatura (Jefatura Provincial de Trafico) on your behalf. Once you have registered, get your medical and vision test done, too. Theory tests can be done in a classroom or be computer based.#The written test is normally taken in Spanish, but some places offer it in English. BENITACHELL Town Hall’s purchase of an unfinished building for conversion into council offices was legal, Mayor Miguel Angel Garcia announced. After his predecessor, Josep Femenia from the Red party, forced a town hall meeting to cancel the deal, the current mayor Miguel Angel Garcia received official confirmation that only he was authorised to do so. Garcia nevertheless gave full details of the property in Calle Capelletes at the entrance to Benitachell which will house council offices at present located in different parts of the town. Femenia also questioned whether the cash for the property should have come from Benitachell’s Budget and Garcia replied that he and the clerk of the council had sought the Diputacion county council’s advice on this point. FIFTEEN Valencian Community municipalities received a Ministry of Justice notification to remove symbols that remain from the Franco era. The notice was sent out to a total of 656 town halls throughout Spain to remove vestiges of the 1939-1975 regime from all public places. They are also required to change the names of 1,171
streets and plazas bearing names of figures or events associated with the Franco, including artists like Salvador Dali who allegedly sympathised with him. In Alicante Province the Ministry notice will affect Alicante City, Castell de Castells, Novelda, Pilar de la Horadada, Pinoso and Teulada-Moraira.
