ISSUE NO. 1579
Princess Cristina to go on trial in January THE king’s sister stands accused of tax fraud By John Smith Princess Cristina will stand trial for tax fraud on January 11, a Spanish court announced on Tuesday, October 6. She will be the first member of the royal family to stand trial since the monarchy was restored in 1975 although there has been an earlier scandal which may have implicated the former king. The 50-year-old sister of King Felipe
VI was charged following a four-year investigation into her husband, Inaki Urdangarin (pictured inset with the princess), who faces charges of moneylaundering and fraud. The Palma court said the couple will stand trial next year along with 16 others in the case, although both have vehemently denied the charges. Urdangarin is accused of embezzling in the region of ₏6 million connected
with public contract awards through a non-profit foundation he and a business partner set up, and he faces a sentence of up to 19 years if convicted. Having had her title of Duchess of Palma de Mallorca, which she received on her marriage in 1997, removed, Princess Cristina is sixth in line of succession to the throne, and faces a maximum sentence of up to four years if convicted.
