8 to 12 - are designed to thrill, with events, music and great food at every turn. Today (Thursday) at 8pm, there will be an inauguration ceremony featuring the town’s municipal band at the Balcon de Europa, followed by the traditional opening

speech at 8.30pm. One of the most special moments will happen at 9pm with the switching on of the lights at the fairground, and the opening of the rides. At 10.30pm, there will be a special gala to choose the Feria Queen and King in Plaza

de España, with an entrance fee of €10. The festivities are held to pay tribute to the patron saints of Nerja, the Virgen de las Angustias and San Miguel Arcangel. Both effigies are taken from the El Salvador Turn to Page 3

Musical success THE Music and Dance School of Rincon de la Victoria has registered 400 new enrolments this year, which represents an increase as last year they registered 360. The centre gives service to

New hotel for good cause COMPLEX will be managed by religious association Caritas By Maria José Fernandez A NEW building is to be constructed in Torrox for the best of the causes. Cordoba Bishop, Demetrio Fernandez, placed the first stone of the new complex ‘Cristo Rey’ (King Christ) which is to be constructed in the plot where a former residential complex owned by the Cordoba Diocese used to be located from the 50’s. This new hotel will be managed by catholic religious association Caritas, and will have a total budget of €1.8 million. It will have 146 places earmarked for poorer children and youths from Cordoba, however, Fernandez said that all residents can access a place when they are available. It is expected that the construction works will be completed in 18 months. “One day we came to visit this building and realised it was a treasure for Caritas and that we could not leave it in this condition,” said the bishop. After the experts issued a technical report, it was decided to demolish the original building and create a two-floor new building which will also have a chapel.

By John Smith THERE is no doubt that the Spanish love parades and often the more unusual the better. One theme that is always popular is that of the ‘gigantes y cabezudos’ which translates as ‘giants and big heads’ which have heads finely made from papier maché and invariably depict characters from Spain’s past. The gigantes are hollow figures which are several metres high where a single person controls a harness within the body which allows it to shake and dance whilst the cabezudos are human size but with very large heads. Looking

VELEZ-MALAGA Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer has reiterated the new government’s firm commitment to have the tram in service again, after a threeyear absence. Moreno told press agency Europa Press that his team believes transport in the town is not as efficient as they would like it to be. The 12 outlying districts, according to him, have frequent problems connecting with the town, and the mayor believes this is an issue that needs to be tackled. “From Caleta or Triana there is practically no way to get to the hospital, the town hall or another outpatients’ clinics,” he said, and continued: “Members of the current government are concerned about this and for us, the tram would be the backbone that connects the whole town.” The tram service was inaugurated in 2006 and was operational for five years

ture, which has needed cleaning and reparation work. Moreno Ferrer has clearly expressed his intention to bring the tram service back in the next few months.

Popular trail repaired STRETCH Number Six on Malaga’s great trail - ‘Gran Senda’ - which passes through Frigiliana has received a comprehensive series of improvements, paid for by Malaga Provincial Council. Works were aimed at eliminating

dangerous sections of the path, which have been reduced by 70 per cent, and installing new signs. Workers have also eliminated plants and bushes which were obstructing the path and have made reparations to

the terrain. Sports Councillor for Frigiliana, Robert Torres, expressed his satisfaction at the improvements as he believes they will help boost visits by nature lovers and sports enthusiasts.

New Salobreña bus stop on shaky ground OBJECTIONS raised about pollution and noise By Maria José Fernandez IT seems like the temporary bus stop set to be built at the unused playground of the IES Mediterraneo in Salobreña is facing obstacles. As was reported by the Euro We e k l y N e w s a t th e end of September, Mayor Maria Eugenia Rufino had presented the project to turn this 1,685-square-metre area into a temporary station complete with a waiting room and toilets, for a total cost of €122,000. The project was expected to create at least 50 employment positions. In ad d i t i o n , t h e p lay ground was to be adapted so that it could be turned back into a school facility and allow the pupils to also bene-

fit from the renovations. However, the education board of the Mediterraneo secondary school has completely rejected the project, claiming in a letter that the new stop will cause noise, from buses and people, as well as increase pollution, amongst many other disadvantages. “A more appropriate loca-

tion would be safer for the Salobreña community,” read the letter. The Partido Andalucista has also presented a motion against the project and in favour of searching for a diffe re nt loc a tion for the s ta tion, c onde mning the amount of money that is going to be spent on a project which generates conflict.

‘School for Parents

DESIGNED to provide information on different asp By Maria José Fernandez THE Secondary School Villanueva del Mar in La Herradura has launched a pioneering initiative. The ‘School for Parents’ has been designed as a way to provide parents with information regarding many different aspects of their children’s education. The first one, celebrated on October 7, was about relationships with teenagers, and was funded by the town’s Health Ministry, and Social Services Department. “The main goal of this School for Parents is to prevent family conflicts, especially those which can arise between parents and their children, specifically when entering puberty,” said Head of the School, Luis Javier Contreras Rodriguez. The course was divided into different sections covering education, rules and boundaries, communication, conflict resolution, behaviour patterns and leisure time, amongst others. The courses will have a duration of 10 hours and will take place on October 14, 21, 28 and November 4.

La Herradura’s seabed is now squeaky clean

CLEAN-UP EVENT: Volunteers and divers rid the seabed of all sorts of rubbish. ALL sorts of waste was collected from La Herradura’s seabeds by a group of volunteers and divers who selflessly gave their free time to clean up the underwater environment. Fish hooks, scrap metal and all kinds of rubbish were collected in the Peña Parda–Cerro Gordo area. The event was organised by the ‘Friends of the Sea of Costa Tropical’ association with

the collaboration of the Subaquatic Activities Association of the University of Malaga. The event was one of many other similar ones organised on the occasion of the ‘Sea Festival’, under the slogan ‘The Sea: The Jewel of All my Treasures’, which was designed to raise awareness of the richness and patrimonial importance of La Herradura’s seabeds.

Research grant for Axarquia MONEY for whitefly project THE Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, created by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has taken an interest in a cutting-edge research centre in Axarquia. La Mayora de Algarrobo has obtained a €300,000 grant to participate, along with other centres and researchers from all corners of the globe, in an investigation into the possible reasons for the whitefly epidemic which is affecting cassava plants in Africa and to find a sustainable solution, if possible. Specifically, the Axarquia

centre will focus its study on the biological isolation of the different species of this plant and on the evaluation of the impact of the insect on the plants. “Not so long ago, it was believed that the whitefly was a unique species,” said a researcher from La Mayora, Jesus Navas. He continued: “Today we know that there are at least 30 different species; we will study the European and African groups and confirm whether or not they mate with each other.” The aid given to La Mayora

New electricity tariffs introduced on October 1 by the major suppliers ALTERNATIVE method of charging based on hourly usage with each hour having a different tariff By John Smith WITHOUT a great deal of publicity, a number of the larger electricity companies introduced a new method of charging for electricity based on hourly usage with each hour having a different tariff, which can also change depending upon the day of usage. In theory, there could be 168 different tariffs each week and even they could change depending on whether it’s a windy day, as if it is, more wind power comes into play and electricity could get cheaper. Organisations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau seem a little ambivalent as to whether there will be any real saving although they think on balance there may be. They do point out, however, that a high percentage of the bill from the electricity companies is in respect of taxes and fixed charges rather than consumer usage. They also point out that all those with a teleoperated digital meter and on a contract with the PVPC (Precio Voluntario al Pequeño Consumidor) tariff will be affected by this change. Those on a contract that offers a fixed price for

There is some confusion as to the likely cost of changing the meter (and the government aim is for all meters to be replaced by 2018) but according to information received, one of the ‘main players’ has indicated a €9 charge for changing the meter followed by an 81- cent monthly rental charge. Beware the unscrupulous who may try to take advantage of this change and always contact your electricity supplier as they are the ideal company to make any changes for you. It would be almost impossible for any consumer to be completely aware of all of the costs, but it is fairly obvious that peak charges are likely in the morning and the evening whilst low costs are more likely after midnight and at weekends especially Sunday. This change will affect everyone who uses electricity over the next three years, but whether the companies have come up with a solution which will benefit the consumer is yet to be seen and the fact that no consumer organisation was consulted in the drawing up of these plans may be ominous.

Seniors’ fun Unemployment figures ALMOST 1,500 senior residents are taking part in workshops offered by Velez-Malaga Council. The news was announced on October 1, coinciding with the International Day of Older Persons. Among the courses offered are memory workshops, painting, dancing, theatre and choir singing. “Users can enjoy all sorts of social, self-help, cultural, leisure, musical or craft activities, as well as get help with administrative matters,” said Councillor Sergio Hijano.

Beaten only by Cadiz, where the dole queue gained 7,550 people, Malaga registered a rise in unemployment of 4,447 people, bringing the total for the province up to 178,917. Although the figure is worse than in September 2014, this is partly because whereas it tends to increase in August, this year unemployment actually fell slightly for the seventh month in a row. This was due to the fact that the busy season for tourism lasted longer this year, starting earlier and ending later than in

Agricultural theft Charity market in Rincon de la Victoria leads to 4 arrests

OBJECTIVE is to raise money to buy food for the poor

FOUR people were taken into custody by the Velez-Malaga Local Police after having al-

legedly stolen 300 kilos of fruit from a cottage in Los Toscanos (Almayate district).

The events took place last Saturday (October 3) at around 2.15am, when a special patrol in charge of preventing field thefts detected a vehicle exiting the Los Toscanos road at speed, later entering the N-340 road heading to Malaga. The driver, after noticing the authorities, accelerated to 140 kilometres per hour but was caught a short time later in the area of Benajarafe. After identifying the passengers in the vehicle, officers found four men from Torre del Mar and Rincon de la Victoria and discovered that the car was not roadworthy as it had not passed its ITV (MOT) test. According to the police, the four suspects admitted to having stolen the fruit and one of them took officers to the location. The goods were returned to their owner.

The event, organised in conjunction with the Rincon Contigo association, will offer all sorts of items including books, CDs, handbags, toys and jewellery amongst others, at

Rincon Contigo currently helps 100 families from across the town and has its headquarters in Calle Los Almendros.

A passion for getting things done Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports. Past experiences spur Jayne Fisher on to help mistreated and abandoned animals. JAYNE FISHER has always used her skills to help others who are less fortunate than most. She is a woman who sees the bigger picture, and is focused on how to achieve the desired results. She arrived in Spain in 2005, after working in Edinburgh as the Chief Executive of a home for the disabled. She was responsible for finding suitable homes for those who needed special physical requirements and she made sure that ongoing support was at hand. From this background, it is no surprise that Jayne still possessed the passion to get things done when she and her husband Bill bought their home here in Spain. She had witnessed terrible sights and many abandoned animals - two being left to starve in the mountains which rang alarm bells in her conscience that something had to be done. Being in a position to volunteer help, Jane contacted a small charity that had been operating, named ADANA, which was in desperate need of obtaining ongoing funds. She recalled: “I began to distribute tin money boxes all around the area just to get money coming in for the shelter. The problem was plain to see that you need ongoing funds, and not just the one-off influx from an event.” Jayne began to help organise events along with other volunteers, and being treasurer she has to make sure that that tap always flows.

She added: “In five years from now, I would like to see the ADANA shelter with electricity and be up to a high standard without having to constantly battle on with short-term projects.” It is her rewards that drive her on, as she remarked: “When you see an animal that has been through the rough times and totally unwanted, to witness them in their new home is a feeling that money cannot buy. “It’s not just about animals, but it is also how animals can bring joy to children or an older person. It works for both parties and makes me happy to see comfort in others in that way.” Between organising and overseeing programmes including the ‘Sponsor a Dog’ programme, Jayne is also the president of her home community. She admits that she has a desire for team work, moving forward and making a change. She is always grateful for support from organisations, including Euro Weekly News, in sponsoring dog shows and the like. Her faith in the community and her need for giving things back is what is at the heart of her persona. She also finds strength in her local church and is always there to support others around her.

Robbery attempt still a mystery A MAN armed with a shotgun has attempted to steal, or rob, a lorry in Motril, according to a statement released by National Police. The events took place on Friday, October 2, at around 9.30pm when a luxury vehicle forced a lorry coming from Motril Port and heading to Almeria to stop on a roundabout. The armed man stepped out of the vehicle and threatened the lorry driver, who was able to alert National Police before the alleged robber was able to reach him, according to his version of events. Police were quickly on the scene and the robber fired his gun several times before fleeing in the car. The authorities began chasing him but were unable to catch up with the suspect. Officers are currently investigating the events as the lorry was coming from

Petition for a cleaner Motril HUNDREDS of signatures have been collected by the Partido Popular (PP) in Motril to denounce the lack of cleanliness in the town. Spokesperson and former Mayor Luisa Garcia Chamorro thanked the almost 2,000 Motril residents who signed the petition for a cleaner town, which is to be taken to the Andalucian Ombudsman to find a solution for an issue that has been the cause of complaints from many residents and associations, according to the PP. “It is the residents who want a solution for the unsanitary conditions of the town suffered in the district of Motril for the past weeks,” said the spokesperson.

Girl, 9, hurt in car crash A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl sustained injuries after being involved in a car accident in Almuñecar. Dozens of calls were registered on Sunday, October 4, at the emergency office 112, by witnesses who alerted them to the incident which occurred on the A-7 road

in Almuñecar. A vehicle swerved violently off the road and overturned while falling down a cliff for several minutes. As a result, the nine-year-old girl sustained concussion and injuries and was transferred to Santa Ana Hospital in Motril.

This change to the Public Ministry’s regulations, and the extended delay in reduceing the terms of imprisonment and fines on the promoters and builders for contravening planning laws, has made an out of court settlement possible. This was ratified in Almeria’s Criminal Court 2. Gerardo Vázquez, legal advisor to AUAN (the Almerian equivalent of SOHA), and the lawyer representing two of those threatened with demolition, (an octogenarian British couple), stressed the importance of the decision, and hoped that it would be followed in similar cases awaiting judgement, so that, step-by-step, the problem might be resolved to the benefit of everyone.

In the same vein, Julián Cazorla, the lawyer for another homeowner, also stated that the solution found in this case had opened the door for future cases. The hard work of associations like SOHA and AUAN has greatly contributed to positive news such as this. With the help of lawyers like Gerardo Vázquez, they lobbied and demonstrated to make the changes to Spanish law in both the Criminal Code and the Civil Code. In essence, the change to the law gives a judge the right to insist (when ordering the demolition of a house which was bought in good faith) that compensation is paid to owners before the demolition. The Priors (about whom we have written previously), whose house was demolished seven years ago, are still waiting for the compensation which an EU court ruled that they were entitled to. Under the new law, it is hoped that owners who bought in good faith will never again suffer the Prior’s appalling injustice.

Ultimatum to repair court EXTENSIVE deficiences revealed in report By Maria Jose Fernandez THE Workplace Inspection Committee has given the Junta de Andalucia regional government a deadline of three months to perform a comprehensive series of reparations at the Palace of Justice in Motril. The Justice Employees Union (STAJ) presented a formal letter at the Provincial Workplace Inspection office back in July, denouncing the many deficiencies of the building, including the problems with the air conditioning. The inspector then held a meeting with experts which confirmed the situation alleged by workers and, according to their reports, workers have had to bear temperatures of up to 27.5º Celsius while at work, a situation which was made even worse due to the heat waves

registered in July and August. In addition, the inspector discovered that the building had never been evaluated to determine the kinds of risk employees are exposed to, such as the extreme heat already mentioned. “The place does not have measurements for optimal work temperatures at each position,” read the inspector’s report, which continued: “A prolonged exposure to high temperatures together with dehydration could potentially cause serious health problems.” Other risks found in the office were the overloading of shelves with folders, the lack of handrails across stairways and the existence of exposed cables on the floor, which could cause falls. These and many other deficiencies are to be fixed by the Junta de Andalucia regional government.

SOONER or later, Greece will start to dominate Euro-related news again, now that Alexis Tsipras and his left-wing party have been sworn back into power. After the latest general elections, Mr Tsipras breezed back into the poisoned hotseat with even more power than before. The anti-austerity leader had managed to strike a last-minute deal with its creditors for a sum of €86bn, preventing Greece from defaulting on its debts and being forced out of the Eurozone. Investors are still pointing to Greece’s long-term issues as the key indicator for Euro deterioration against most major counterparts into the first quarter of 2016.

ANTICIPATION: It is believed that the pound to euro rate could head towards 1.40. There is an air of anticipation that GBPEUR could start to head back towards

1.40 once the US finally starts to move its own interest rates.

In other news, the EU Quantitative Easing Programme (QE) may be allowed to continue beyond its scheduled expiry date of September 2016. After its early success and signs of real economic improvement, questions are starting to surface again as to whether the bond-purchasing programme may need to be extended, due mainly to slow growth and weak inflation figures. The latest figures for September actually showed that the Eurozone had ‘deflated’ as prices fell by 0.1 per cent. This is the first time in six months that the numbers have fallen into negative territory. President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, had warned this could happen, so there were no sudden shocks for the market. There are expectations that Mr Draghi wants to keep the Euro relatively weak, especially against the greenback, as exports have been gaining from a frail currency pairing of EURUSD.

SEPTEMBER saw consumer prices in Spain fall at their fastest rate in seven months, according to early estimates from the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE), partly due to lower energy costs. While retail sales continue to grow on the back of increasing demand, the overall view from the EU is that Spain is currently enjoying a period of negative inflation. There are indications that, for the first time in eight months, Germany will also record negative inflation during September. While high inflation is considered to be bad for any economy, less prominence is given to negative inflation but this latest news may not be welcomed by the European Central Bank, which has a programme of quantitative easing aimed at an overall inflation rate of 2 per cent across Europe, which it considers will help economic growth within the Eurozone.

Precious metal prices are under scrutiny from Swiss Authorities FOR many years, it has always been a tradition that in times of financial disturbance, precious metals in general, and gold in particular, are an ideal home for investments rather than stocks and shares. The metal has been particularly volatile since the global market turndown and both gold and silver have hit record prices. Although they have retrenched to some extent, they still stand at much higher levels than before the turn-down; gold more so than silver. Like so many other areas of finance, however, the question now arises as to whether these prices have been orchestrated over the years as authorities in Switzerland have announced a probe into global banks over the suspected manipulation of the price of precious metals. The Swiss Competition Commission (Comco) has said it will investigate seven banks saying it had “indications” that the banks had “possibly concluded illegal competition-defying deals.” Comco said its investigation will include Barclays, Deutsche Bank, HS-

It seems rather disheartening to write out your company’s obituary before it is born. Running a business is akin to running a gauntlet. You set your hopes high, you invest, you set out your business plan and you work hard to make your business a success. Facing hard times, many businesses resort to dishonest practices to survive. I believe ‘sloppiness’ at the till to be institutionalised robbery. Overcharging or failure to record a discount happens far too often for it to be an oversight. I recall the Benidorm bar owner who advertised €1 pints. When the half-pint glasses were questioned, he replied: “These are Benidorm pints, señor.” In another Costa resort, a large beer and baguette was advertised for just €4. Those businesses resorting to cheating should be shown a ‘red card’ and their trading licence removed if they are repeat offenders. This simple solution would help to launder a resort’s image and all legitimate businesses would benefit as a result. Who knows, it may well reduce the number of failed businesses.

OTHERS THINK IT WATCHING ‘Comrade Corbyn’ address last week’s Labour Party Conference, I found myself experiencing odd twinges of deja vu. Then it dawned on me; his rhetoric was exactly like the conversations we had back in the 60’s. The long ‘flower-power,’ ‘pot-inspired’ exchanges of young enthusiastic ideas on how we could change the world. Deep into the night we would discuss the dreams and ideals that would enable us all to live happily ever after in a conflict-free, loving environment; all with no idea at all how to turn our schemes into reality. Of course, we were hopelessly naive and, most important of all, extremely young and painfully ignorant of the ways of the world and its workings. However, in the main, we were completely harmless. And that’s where the similarity between Mr Corbyn and the flowerpower idealists of old falls down. This man is not some starry-eyed, naive youngster, hoping to turn the world into a

peace loving Shangri-La. In my opinion he is a deceit riddled, extremely experienced, highly dangerous far-left operator; using these ideals to snare as many (mainly young) people as possible into embracing him as a kind of 21stcentury saviour who will lead his people to some euphoric utopia. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. I believe this man is fully aware that his policies will deliver us into Communism and the clutches of our enemies. Not his enemies of course; his record of embracing our adversaries has been well chronicled over the years. His are the politics of stealth. I shudder when I see the faces that gaze up at him. I saw the same look on the followers of David Koresh, Jim Jones and Charles Manson; all dangerous manipulators who also promised their followers they could lead them to the ‘Promised Land’ and who held far less influential positions than Jeremy Cobyn and his TUC cronies. New traffic laws for children in vehicles AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers. NEW traffic laws came into force last week in Spain with the main objective of protecting children in cars. Now, all children measuring 135cm in height or less must ride in the rear seats of a vehicle, irrespective of their age, and they must be in the correct seat and restraint according to their age and weight. There are a number of exceptions to the rules, for example, when the vehicle does not have rear seats, when all rear seats are already occupied by others under the same characteristics and where it is not possible to install approved child seat restraints in those rear seats. Children can then sit in the front seat but must still wear the appropriate restraint until they are taller than 150cm and then they can use the vehicle seat belt. This amendment of article 117 also stipulates that child restraints must be installed in the vehicle in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer. The modification of this law reflects the scientific evidence from numerous studies that demonstrate the benefit of children travelling in the rear seats of vehicles in order to strengthen their protection. A study in the USA looked at 5,751 vehicle occupants under the age of 15 who had suffered a serious car incident. The study showed that sitting in the back seat had a protective effect with respect to serious injury or death. A further study in Aus-

The risk of death was four times higher if the child was under the age of one. Not only is the risk of injury higher in the front seats, but also the severity of injuries sustained, according to the Crash Injury Research Engineering Network (CIREN). Spain’s DGT has also seen growing concerns for safety of children in vehicles. In 2014, two of the 14 children under 12 years of age who were killed whilst travelling in vehicles were not wearing any safety device at the time of the accident.

AS I have been retired now for some years I have a lot of time on my hand. This, of course, is something cold callers don’t know and although I don’t need someone to sort out my PPI I’m quite happy to wind them up! “Hi, is this a good time to talk to you about PPI?” Me: “Sure”. Mum/Dad?” Then they hang up and I’ve killed more time. But my favourite phone call is from the bank: “Hello is that Mr Senker? This is Mary from HSBC”. “Yes it’s me.” Mary: “OK I just need to ask you some

security questions”. Me: “What? You called me, you know it’s me!” Mary: “Yes but before I can continue I need you to answer a few questions.” Me: “How do I know you are Mary from HSBC? I need YOU to answer some questions. So what’s your mother’s maiden name? Your first car? The name of your first pet?” This goes on for a few minutes and we finally decide that we are both who we say we are, or in her case I am the person she phoned. On MY mobile phone! So what’s the problem? Apparently I went on holiday without telling them! “Sorry why do I have to tell you I’m going on holiday?” “Because we noticed your card was used in a hotel in Las Vegas.” “You mean the hotel I booked with this credit card six months ago and the same card I paid for the flight with?” “Err yes.” So another 20 minutes gone. What shall I do now? Maybe Movistar or Orange will phone me and I can listen to someone rattling off to me in Spanish for 10 minutes before I say “Lo siento no hablo Espanol.”

Tourists are getting fed up with all animal abuse in Spain I REFER to your article about the Mijas donkeys in last week’s paper (1578). Like many other tourists we love the Mijas Pueblo and there is nothing against people trying to make a living with donkey carts. But there are rules to follow all the way. These are living creatures with the same feelings like humans, so if they need to work, they need to be taken GOOD care of. Meaning getting proper food and being able to drink in the extreme heat of Spain. Also standing and waiting for the next ride they should have shade. And of course they shouldn’t be beaten! If the owners fail on these points, their licence should be taken away and they shouldn’t be allowed to execute their profession any more. The video of the beating and dragging the donkey is not only harmful to the animal, but also to tourism! Fact is that tourists are getting fed up with all animal abuse in Spain, whether it is concerning the donkeys, the hunting, the bullfighting and abandoning domestic animals. Good for her! WHILE reading your newspaper I came across the article where Amina Axelsson jumped the bullring with a protest sign. All I can say is : GOOD FOR HER! Same as Peter Janssen from Holland and Victoria Ruiz from Spain. We have to get more attention for these atrocities that are still being done to these poor creatures. Let us not forget we are talking about mammals. They have the same feelings as human beings, like pain and fear. What is wrong with people that they can enjoy the torture, pain and death of an innocent animal? On top of that it is subsidised by the European Union. Also a lot of town halls support the bullfighting. In the meantime, thousands of people can’t get proper health care or education because of the lack of money. Processionary caterpillars I READ your article about processionary caterpillars in last week’s edition, and would like a lead if possible to find out which type of bird likes to eat them. I have a lot of pine trees in my finca, as well as dogs, and spend a lot of hours cutting out the nests, which often includes lopping the trees as they often seek the highest branches to locate their nests. Keep up the good work CONCERNING the article, ‘Mijas donkey taxi the next step’: I hope all this works out as it sounds as if this man is very sincere in this situation and it sounds a very good idea! There must be quite a few people that live up there who would volunteer a couple of hours a week to this scheme... wish I lived there, I know I would! Beautiful place and especially only children/light weight teenagers on the donkeys. I was there in June and they are lovely creatures. I have been and visited on a few occasions over the years and they are one of the attractions, but I always feel sorry for them with heavy adults sitting on them. Keep up the good work. WE were warned against visiting the Baltic State, but decided to go anyway Mike Walsh Mike, based in Mediterranean Spain, is an international journalist, author and professional writer.

There, the clown hit the brakes so savagely an unfortunate lady passenger was catapulted against the bus windscreen shattering it. The ambulance and police arrived 20-minutes later; for all the use they were why did they bother? It doesn’t get any better in chip-on-its-shoulderland. It was now clear why a Lithuanian explained that commuters prefer the impersonality of the train as a travel alternative. WHAT the hell is wrong with people? Last week it was reported that a dog whose legs had been tied together had been rescued from a canal in Rojales. The week before, a disturbing picture of a number of dead cats was published in one of the local papers. They were subjects of a mass poisoning in Pilar de la Horadada and more are thought to have died the same way. In our own Los Dolses neighbourhood, two cats - both wearing collars and obviously somebody’s pets - have also been poisoned. On Saturday whilst enjoying our regular morning coffee, we observed a young girl struggling with a decrepit looking pet carry basket which she took into the nearby Little Pod charity shop. We could see her in conversation with one of the volunteers, gesturing toward the basket, after several minutes of

THERE has been something more than a little suggestive of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland about the run up to the Catalan elections. The fact that less than 50 per cent of those who voted supported the secessionist parties didn’t really bother Mr Mas and he indicated that within 18 months the autonomous community of Catalonia would be ready to launch itself as the newest country in Europe. Then - they all woke up. Hopefully after the ritual clashing of horns, there will be a sensible solution.

Implant could help with memory loss THERE could be new hope for dementia sufferers in recalling their memories as researchers in the USA say they have developed a prosthetic implant that can help a disabled brain encode memories to make them last. It works with a computer algorithm that mimics the electrical signalling used by the brain to translate shortterm events into permanent memories. Many people with dementia can remember memories from years ago but struggle with remembering recent events from just days or weeks previously, but this device would make these more permanent memories. It is hoped it could also benefit soldiers recover from memory loss. The implant has been developed at the University of Southern California and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre in WinstonSalem, North Carolina, from a decade-long collaboration. The implant has been tested successfully on rats and monkeys and is now being tested on human brains. This is the first time scientists have used computers to manipulate memory signals directly in the human brain.

Unfortunately these days we rely on too many quick fixes that require virtually no effort to acquire. You can buy your hair, nails and enhanced body parts, fairly easily. However it is still apparent that in order to own a truly balanced fit healthy body, you have to work for it. Building cardiovascular fitness can be a relatively fast process if you are prepared to put in the effort and consistently raise the bar so that you do not remain in a comfort zone. Sculpting muscle and shaping your body takes a little longer. One of the most important things you should do before you start your fitness and weight-loss journey is to weigh yourself and take measurements, taking a photograph from all three angles front, side and back is a great idea, I often do this with my clients. As the weeks and months go by, you feel your body changing, , your

clothes feel looser, you get compliments from other people, but you see yourself every day so it is not so easy to see how many changes have taken place as a result of your hard work. The scale alone is not an adequate tool to show an overall picture when it comes to the change process of body shape, imbalance correction and new muscle tone. This is where measurements and photos are valuable. Measurements give the client an accurate gauge of where the weight is coming off and where their progression is. Photographs are priceless, as the saying goes… ‘The Camera Never Lies,’ and it is a great motivator for someone to see a true picture of the way they looked at the start of their journey and how they look three months later. I had a client recently that did a before and after bikini photo, and the changes in her body after three months were astounding. This in itself was a great motivator to keep her on the right track. Even after many years of training, I too am aware that it can be hard to maintain your discipline and motivation unless you can actually see for yourself the results of your effort and hard work. Spain to adopt EU pet criteria DOCKED tails and clipped ears are set to become a thing of the past for dogs in Spain as the Council of Ministers has agreed to adhere to European Union pet protection guidelines. The guidelines, put in place by the EU in 1987, forbid all surgical interventions with aesthetic intentions including tail docking, ear clipping, cutting of vocal chords and removal of claws or teeth, the Ministry for Agriculture and the Environment explained. Having received the government’s approval, the Environmental Ministry said last week that the text will now be sent to the General Courts for approval, which if given will make Spain the 18th EU member state to adopt the guidelines. Use of pets for publicity and entertainment is also limited amongst the measures to ensure their health and wellbeing are not endangered. The National Association for Animal Defence (ANDA) has expressed satisfaction at the news, explaining it has been asking the government to adopt the guidelines for more than 10 years. “The text acknowledges the fact that pets have a special relationship with humans. Also it underlines their contribution to quality of life and their value for society,” the animal rights group stated. Other measures in the guidelines include regulations on gifting pets to under 16s which will ensure parental approval is obtained beforehand.

HAVING been woken by heavy rain in the middle of the night for the third night in a row, it made me think: ‘How many readers have ensured that as much of the rain as possible has been saved for future use by the plants in their gardens?’ I suspect not all, so I will cover this topic as, looking out of my window, low mists and drizzle block out the view of the mountains and suggest that there will be no gardening today.

BOOK: Many of the ideas outlined here, and more, are covered in this publication. In looking at the issues involved I will be highlighting some topics covered in more detail in my book ‘How to use less water in your garden – A practical guide to waterwise gardening.’ Absorbent soil This first issue is obvious but rarely worked at year-on-year. The challenge is to develop soil that will retain rainwater, and irrigated water, around and un-

der the roots of plants without becoming chronically waterlogged.

It is important to ensure that root balls can spread sideways and downwards in loosened soil that creates a growing space so the plant grows to maturity without becoming stunted by physical constraints in hard rock-like soil and limited moisture and nutrients. The easiest and cheapest soil additives are your home produced composts and well-rotted animal manures; especially goat, sheep, horse and naturally reared poultry. Mulching to prevent reevaporation Do all you can to prevent evaporation from the surface of the soil by covering with non-absorbent materials such

as stone chippings, ground volcanic ash, almond shells etc: Some 35 practical forms of mulching are described in the book. Ground cover and shade Mulching with materials can be enhanced by allowing evergreen and deciduous plants to spread and hug the ground so as to provide continuous shade. Storing rain water Install guttering and water barrels or a large storage tank like many houses had in Spain before the expat phenomenon and town water-systems. Preventing losses to surrounding properties Surround your property with at least a single building

block wall to prevent rain water running into adjacent properties. With well-prepared soil, any floods will drain away quickly. Moving it to where needed Design the network and slopes of paths and terraces so that rainwater is directed to where it is most required, including to underground storage tanks. Common DIY pitfalls and how to avoid them AS it starts to cool down at last, autumn is a good time to try to tackle niggling jobs about the house. Yet DIY can be full of pitfalls for the inexperienced, and

mistakes can be both expensive and time consuming to solve. Here are the most common problems amateurs stumble across and how to avoid them.

PREPARE PROPERLY: It’s a good time to tackle jobs.

1. Make sure you have a spirit level ready Simple tasks like putting a shelf up seem like a five minute job, yet time saved by skipping the levelling could later mean ornaments and books fall over or slide straight off. The extra minute it takes to establish a level edge and pencil a guideline to work by is definitely worth it. 2. Use primers Watermarks can be a nightmare to conceal, and no matter how many coats you use, painting over stains with waterbased emulsions won’t help. First apply an oil-based primer to seal it, and then paint over the top as normal. 3. Think practically Sudden ideas are wonderful, but it’s always worth stopping to consider whether the result will be practical in the future. Panelling bathroom walls round baths and toilets, for example, gives an attractive, clean finish but may well cause problems in the future when inevitable leaks occur and pipes need to be reached unless removable panels or concealed doors were in-

cluded in the planning stage. 4. Quick fixes are not the answer After wet weather, wooden doors tend to swell and get stuck in their frames. The problem can be quickly fixed by planing the wood, but unless it is then painted over and sealed it will just swell again the next time it rains. 5. Don’t scrimp on essentials Buying expensive paintbrushes for just one job is pointless, but stay away from budget brushes as they have fewer bristles, leading to an untidy finish, and moult much more than mid-range brushes. 6. Protect edges Masking tape and old sheets are your friends and the five minutes it will take to put them in place will save hours of cleaning up stains afterwards. 7. Don’t scrimp on materials It’s always better to have a little paint left over than to end up with patches that later show you had to stop halfway through and rush to the shop for more. This goes the opposite

way when cutting materials, be they wood, wallpaper or carpets. Check every measurement before making cuts and remember less is more, you can always cut off a little extra but if you cut too short you will end

up wasting time and money. 8. Prepare properly Always vacuum thoroughly before painting or any dust left floating about is bound to stick to the wet paint and ruin your efforts.

A FRIEND of mine invited me to join him for a glass of wine at his place. Nothing unusual about that; it happens every day, but this was no ordinary wine or place. My friend is seriously wealthy and when I arrived he had a bottle of Vega Sicilia ready to serve in a crystal glass. He’s a true connoisseur of wine and of all high-quality things and he explained why we were having a bottle of Ribera del Duero’s finest; it was a ‘thank you’ for providing him with the luxury villa he wanted but didn’t think he could find.

Well, the villa was designed and built by one of my top architect friends and I had controlled the building process to ensure quality throughout and yes, it was a Jaw-Dropping Design in a Wow-Factor Location, with state of the art fittings. He explained that Vegas Sicilia, founded in 1864, rivals the best wines in the world such as the great Bordeaux and Burgundy wines. However, there’s a catch; due to low production and high demand the wine isn’t readily available to buy and that’s a problem. But that’s not the point; my friend is one of many wealthy foreign buyers who are having a property built or are buying existing villas. In fact, I was stunned when I read an article which con-

firmed that 75 per cent of all luxury property in Spain is being bought by foreigners. That’s a massive percentage and great news for owners, developers, architects and everyone offering high-quality services and products in real estate, but there’s a catch. Similar to the shortage of Vegas Sicilia wine, there is a small supply of readily available wow-factor locations in Spain and that is a problem. With 75 per cent of all luxury properties being bought by foreigners, there is a concern that we could run out of suitable properties to meet the growing demand. The good news is that the construction industry can respond to the demand by building many more luxury properties in top locations .

THE Puente de la Constitucion de 1812 Cadiz’s new bridge uniting the capital and Puerto Real - is already called La Pepa. Spain’s anachronistically democratic first constitution was declared in 1812 on March 19 and because this is also the saint’s day of every Jose and Josefina, La Constitucion de Cadiz was soon known as La Pepa. Some memories appear to be very near the surface, even as long as 103 years later.

ARTUR MAS has a habit of calling early elections and reducing his parliamentary majority each time. When, in 2012, he lost CiU’s overall majority, he negotiated support from the radical nationalist republican party, ERC. True to form, Mas’s 2015 ticket, Junts pel Si, also lacks an overall majority and he needs the anti-system separatist party CUP. If Mas thought he had problems satisfying ERC’s Oriol Junqueras’s independence demands, his work will be cut out for him with Antonio Baños.

THERE was no Third Way of dialogue before the Cataluña regional elections; that plebiscite that wasn’t. There was only national president Mariano Rajoy’s way and regional president Artur Mas’s way. Neither listened to the other before and neither is listening now. Both men are bad losers and the only way either of them can go is along a oneway street leading to absolutely nowhere.

The pro-independence faction, Junts pel Si and CUP, won more seats in the Cataluña parliament than the other parties together but only received 47.8 per cent of the total number of votes. Ironically, had the national government athorised an independence referendum, the majority

of Catalans would not have voted for it.

The reality is that, confronted with five more years under one of the other three mainstream Labour leader nominees, supporters presumably said: ‘Enough’s enough: Let’s try something different, rather than letting others speak for us, let’s do this for ourselves.’ Corbyn both helped to make and caught that wave. There’s no future for any party if it simply looks at polls and focus group results, iden-

tifies a group of potential voters and simply tweaks its message in a vain attempt to attract them. Some have compared Corbyn’s election as Labour leader to the mad emperor Caligula making his horse a senator. But there are some historians who say he’s more like Caligula himself who, according to one: “Came to power impatient with a sclerotic and obstructive establishment and reached out to the people over the heads of the senatorial elite.” Admittedly, Corbyn’s yet to turn parliament into a brothel or ride across the Channel on a chariot. But it’s still early days... British MPs claim €5.8m TAXPAYERS in the UK were shocked to discover that MPs’ expense claims for tolls, parking and the London Congestion Charge amount to over £4 million (€5.4m). The Auto Express website says UK MPs have claimed nearly £4.3m (€5.8m) in motoring expenses in three years. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), says that £1.4m (€1.9m) is claimed each year.

Honda to unveil its new Fuel Cell Vehicle TOKYO Motor Show will feature car which also produces electricity CAR giants Honda have announced that they will unveil the tentatively-named FCV, the world’s first production model of a fuel-cell powered saloon to house the entire fuel-cell powertrain in the space normally occupied by the engine and transmission, at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens on October 29. This powertrain layout has enabled a full cabin package that seats five adults. Also, the all-new FCV has a cruising range of more than 700 kilometres, while exhilarating driving is made possible by the highoutput motors.

The FCV can also act as a mobile power plant, due to its external power feeding inverter, meaning that it will generate and provide electricity to communities in case of an emergency. A fuel cell vehicle (FCV) is a vehicle which uses a fuel

cell to power its electric motor using Oxygen and Hydrogen. In theory, such a ‘motor’ emits only water and heat, so it is considered a zero-emis-

sions vehicle. Depending on the process, however, producing the hydrogen used in the vehicle can itself create pollutants.
