An exciting summer season ahead for hotel

ON Friday May 17, Óbal Urban Hotel officially marked the beginning of their first summer season with a grand-opening party, after its recent transformation into a four-star hotel. This event, celebrated in the heart of Marbella, saw 200 guests attend, including prominent figures such as the Tourism, Culture and Sports Delegate from the Andalucia Government in Malaga, Gemma del Corral, the mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz and Irene Villa, the event’s patron who attended with her fiancé, David Serrato. During the party, the origins of the old Hotel San Cristóbal were commemorated. Built in the year 1961, back then it was a guest house, providing only accommodation.

Now, after a €9 million renovation, Óbal Urban Hotel has achieved an average occupancy of 65 per cent within its first months which reflects the growth of

tourism in Marbella. “The results of the first quarter have been extremely positive and it encourages us to look optimistically towards the summer season,” said Manuel Murga, director of the hotel.

The hotel just received the UNE 170001 Universal Accessibility certification and it is set to become the first in Spain to obtain the six most important qualifications for quality and sustainability in the hospitality industry.

Cristóbal Parra, the family business’ operations director, said, “Óbal Urban Hotel has been specially designed to offer an exceptional experience, all with the promise of sustainability and innovation.” The food on offer at the hotel, lead by head chef Marilú Montecé, focuses on Mediterranean cuisine using local products. Also, the hotel boasts a unique location in the old town of Marbella, with the RoofTop 360 Blue Sky Bar, offering signature cocktails, a pool and panoramic views of the city.

The new terrace has become one of the most popular destinations for both leisure and entertainment in Marbella. With a calendar full of events, DJ sets and live music, Óbal Urban Hotel prepares for an exciting summer season.

Patios Competition

ALHAURIN EL GRANDE will be holding the first edition of the Alhaurín Patios Competition and Festival on Saturday June 1 and Sunday June 2. The event is sposored by Century 21 with the collaboration of the councils of Tourism and Economic Development of the town hall of Alhaurin el Grande, which aims to raise awareness of the important heritage and cultural value of the town, with treasures yet to be discovered like its courtyards and traditional streets of the old town.

Alhaurinos will open the doors of their homes to everyone to share their love for plants, flowers and the beauty of their courtyards. Three routes have been established where visi-

tors will be able to explore each of the corners of the town on foot, enjoying the beauty and charm of Alhaurin’s historic quarter. Start the route at the Information Point, which will be located in the Plaza Alta. The complete map can be downloaded from the town hall website.

In Andalucia, the architectural fusion of the Roman and Muslim worlds has generated over the centuries a culture of ‘Andalucian patios’. The traditional home revolves around this interior patio, protected from the heat, with a fountain or well and full of plants and

flowers to keep the house cool. The province of Cordoba is the main example of this, having made its traditional festival of the courtyards part of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The province of Malaga also has this culture and, two foreign neighbours who currently live in Alhaurin el Grande and who are real estate consultants in the company Century 21, were captivated by many of these patios during their professional visits and decided to organise and sponsor this event with the support and collaboration of the town hall.

Sound and movement

OUR modern world can feel like a void of authentic connection and spirituality. As we face darkness around us, it becomes vital to create new community networks where we can be accepted exactly as who we are.

Kulam is the Hebrew word for all or everyone and is a nourishing celebration of music and friendship.

Events begin with meditation, which leads attendees to become aware of their bodies and the emotional state they are in. Cocoa is served ceremonially, opening hearts to what is most alive within each individual. The live orchestra begins to play, composed of a rotating cast of global musicians. They take us on a journey: some may dance, some may feel the need

to stretch or meditate. Each performance is unique, a profound therapy session. Kulam Project was born in the jungles of Koh Phangan, Thailand, and has exploded into a movement that regularly tours venues and festivals across Europe. Nir Shraiber and Romina Ibaniez are the power couple behind the spirit of the event. They carry with them love and inclusion and leave a trail of magic in every community the Kulam Project impacts. This is a sober, drug and alcohol free event, ideal for families where children are welcome and is free of charge. The next gathering is on Saturday June 1 at 6pm in El Cartujano, Mijas. The event features the Alhaurin Rock Contest, which aims to give an opportunity for young bands to make themselves known in the world of rock. The bands that will perform are the three finalists from among the 25 that took part.

Rey Eco, Amiga 500 and Polarnova are playing to win this competition.

The prize for the winner is €1,200 plus the recording of a song at the Impala Recording Studio, located in Mestanza. The second prize is €600 and the third prize is €400. During the festival, a charity raffle will be held for the Eo, Eo association to help fund its humanitarian aid and health research projects in Senegal.

The festival will be brought to a close by the group Malavé. Originally from Alhaurin de la Torre, these four musicians have been working tirelessly since the beginning of 2022 with the clear objective of making an impact on their audience. Their music is characterised by rockin’ songs, powerful concerts and an intensity of performance.

Rock the Cazbah

D

O you love the sounds of the Blues? If so, then you don’t want to miss Mama Paula’s Blues Band, giving you the beautiful sounds of soulful blues.

Mama Paula is considered to be the John Mayall of the Costa del Sol and is appearing at the Cazbah Live Lounge in La Cala de Mijas on Saturday June 8 at 10pm.

For Mama Paula, it all started many years ago in a club called Route 66. “I asked the boss

for a slot on the stage and he told me “No way can you play the blues. You bring your gear next week and we will see what you can do,” so that’s what I did and the rest is history.”

It was in Spain that the Mama Paula era started, she met up with Chick Churchill of Ten Years After and they formed Mama Paula and the Chick Churchill Band. Alvin Lee often came to see them play and told her that he thought she was a great blues player,

“and coming from him, it meant the world to me,” said Mama Paula.

On June 14 2008, the Mama Paula Blues Band played with Mud Morganfield, the son of Muddy Waters at the Mijas Blues Festival. She has also shared the stage with the likes of Roger Daltrey, Suzie Quattro and Joe Cocker among many others and now is coming to the Cazbah Live Lounge.
