“It has been very exciting to have the help of all these children to make a positive impact on the

environment,” said Zabell, adding, “the ocean is severely threatened by plastic pollution and waste. That is why it is essential to engage younger generations in respecting nature if we want to ensure a sustainable future.”

Smashing numbers

Tourism, professional events, the beaches... it all adds up to the fact that the international airport of Malaga-Costa del Sol continues to smash its records to the point that it is the airport with the highest growth in passenger numbers among the six largest airports in Spain.

Aena’s airport network in Spain has increased its tra c by 13 per cent in total to more than 60 million passengers. Malaga played a major role in this boost and is the airport with the third highest number of users after Madrid and Barcelona. The international markets with the greatest demand in the rst quarter of 2024 were the British market with almost one million passengers, followed by Germany and the Netherlands with over 300,000, and Italy and France with over 200,000.

New skatepark

has a new 6,600 square metre skatepark, “which is the largest in Andalucia for free use and probably one of the best in Spain.” This was reported by the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, who visited the facilities after the completion of the works.

Diego López, said that the park, “has space for skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading and scootering, which are becoming increasingly popular with young people.” Ángeles Muñoz added, “We are going to have a big event on Saturday April 20 to open it up to everyone.”

The opening hours of the skatepark are Monday to Thursday and Sundays from 9am until 10pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 11pm in winter (from October 1 to May 31) and from 9am until midnight every day in summer (from June 1 to September 30).

Torrequebrada beach.

AT 10am on Friday April 12, Mijas Fire Brigade received an emergency call alerting them to a vehicle fire in Calle Naranjo in Las Lagunas. Three cars were on fire, the fire originated in one of the cars, apparently due to a mechanical failure and the wind caused it to spread.

Suspect caught

ON Tuesday April 9, National Police arrested a Belgian citizen who boarded a bus in Marbella with an assault rifle, a pistol, ammunition and a bulletproof vest hidden in his luggage. The man was wanted in Belgium for robbery, homicide and kidnapping.

Renovations

TORREMOLINOS is to start renovating La Nogalera square, which will also include the renovation of the surrounding streets. The works will be completed in 2025 and be carried out in phases.

Summer pool

THE energy refurbishment and modernisation of Marbella’s Salduba municipal swimming pool is 60 per cent complete and the facility is expected to be operational for summer 2024.

Garden of Costa del Sol

THE new retail centre, Estepona Park opened its doors on Thursday April 11 with a first wave of shops, which includes Kiwoko, Sprinter, PrimaPrix and Veritas. In July in a second phase, other shops, a gym, Flipajump and a KFC branch will open. The shops already open now are: Veritas, an organic supermarket chain. Its stock is certified organic, sustainable, fair trade, and the company is committed to local suppliers.

1,800-home urbanisation

ALMOST 16 years after the rst steps were taken to promote the construction in Estepona of a new macro-urbanisation with 1,800 homes, the project has passed a decisive stage. The Junta de Andalucia has just issued environmental authorisation in favour of the development of the land in the Saladavieja sector, with a surface area of over 400,000 square metres.

The nal approval of the Saladavieja area development plan dates from May 2008. Its approval allowed progress to be made in the reparcelling and urban

development of the area. As part of the reparcelling project, among plots for residential use, an area of over 20,000 square metres is, “to be used as a private cultural and educational facility.”

The development project speci es that the area currently has access roads from the adjoining development to the south, Urbanización Seghers; to the north, from the recently built development; and to the east, from the access road to the centre of Las Mesas all of which will be replaced by a new road network.

Torremolinos Triathlon Mum deserves it

THE Playas de Torremolinos Triathlon will be held on Sunday April 28 for the sixth year, a sporting event promoted by the Torremolinos Triathlon Club with the collaboration of the Torremolinos Sports Department of the Town Hall. “On April 28 we have the sixth edition of the Playas de Torremolinos Triathlon, a spectacular competition which this year is held after learning the town will host, from October 17 to 20, the

final of the World Triathlon Championships, the most important sporting event to be hosted by Andalucia in 2024,” said councillor for Sports, Ramón Alcaide.

The mayor responsible for Commerce, Maria del Mar Martinez, along with the technical Area, Pepi Moyano, have been responsible for presenting the initiative at a press conference. The campaign

will run until Sunday May 5 and in order to receive the gift of a towel plus a beach bag, a purchase receipt for a minimum amount of €15 must be presented to prove the purchase made.

The gifts will be handed out at the Casa de la Juventud from May 6 to 15, from 10am to 1.30pm, while stocks last and on a first come, first served basis.

Earth Day clean-up

The competition already has more than 150 registered participants and, “Torremolinos Triathlon Club will put on an event that will be held in sprint mode and this year will also offer relays and pairs competitions,” said Alcaide.

Torremolinos Triathlon Club will also set up a fair where collaborators will display their products and offer participants special discounts.

THE MiMoana collective has organised a new day of cleaning up the Mijas coastline on Saturday April 20, to celebrate Earth Day. The activity will take place on the beach of Calahonda, next to the Royal Beach beach bar, from 11am.

The co-founder of the group, Nikky Wegloop, said that they regularly organise various clean-ups along the coast of Malaga, including Mijas. “This is a day of environmental awareness to

show the large amount of waste that is on our beaches. Above all, we remove plastic waste and cigarette butts, which take many years to degrade,” explained Wegloop. To take part, all you have to do is go to the marquee on the beach on Saturday. There, the organisers will distribute bags and gloves among the participants.

Around 70 volunteers are expected to attend and will be removing the waste for approximately three hours.

Good Samaritans

AT EWN we have all been uplifted by the story from a reader in La Cala de Mijas which goes to prove that there are still good Samaritans out there.

“My wife fell whilst walking along the path by the beach road opposite the bar ‘Streets of London’ in La Cala. It was a bad fall with abrasions to her face.

“However, when she fell there were two young Spanish runners there in seconds offering to help and an Eastern European guy also offered help. An Irish couple stopped, replenished her tissues and comforted her whilst I went to friends nearby to get some ice, they also came out to comfort her.

“The lady from ‘Streets of London’ came out to help, a Moroccan guy who goes from bin to bin looking for ma-

terials to recycle stopped and offered water. Our close friends picked us up and took us to the hospital and stayed for hours. Spanish people at the hospital were so supportive and generous towards us too.

“We had booked for the quiz at The Sussex pub but were unable to attend so the landlords, Ricky and Nicky, sent us our meal as a takeaway and provided straws so my wife could drink.

“My point is: it was a horrible day but kindness on an international scale won hands down.” The gentleman concerned would like to thank all those people who helped as their compassion was much appreciated. “My wife’s bruises will heal but the memories of people’s kindness will live with us forever,” he concluded.

AI jellyfish detector

MALAGA Provincial Council is investigating the use of artificial intelligence to inform beachgoers in Andalucia about the presence of jellyfish and invasive algae.

Under the name Oceanaria-Andalucia, the project will unite ‘science, sport and tourism’ whose common thread is AI in what will be an app and website. The app aims to work on prevention to improve the quality of the environment of more than 800 beaches and almost 1,000 kilometres of the Andalucian coastline.

Once comprehensive data has been collected, AI algorithms will be developed to display information about the presence of these species and other marine phenomena: “This will allow us to work on prevention, knowing five days in advance if an invasion of some of these species is likely to occur,” said Fran-

cisco Franco Duro, director of the Chair of Coastal Sciences at the University of Malaga.

The website and application is expected to take just over a year to develop so, by the summer of 2025,

it will no longer be necessary to travel miles and miles of coastline to surf, sunbathe or enjoy a day at the beach with the family in good conditions. This app will provide all the data in advance using AI.

Daniel Ek seems to be in the market for an exclusive beachfront villa on Marbella’s Golden Mile according to reports on social media.

Daniel Ek is the founder of Spotify and one of the world’s most influential entrepreneurs and has reportedly become infatuated with a large villa lo cated in the heart of Marbella’s Golden Mile, valued at €30 million.

Located in the Santa Margarita urbanisation, the villa is known as El Bosque because of the large garden and trees surrounding the main house, which has direct access to the Paseo Marítimo. It’s located in an exclusive area next to Marbella Club, the five-star luxury

resort and hotel complex where some of the most popular celebrities stay. Many famous celebrities have had or still have their refuge in Marbella, such as Julio Iglesias, Antonio Banderas, Arturo Fernández, Carmen Thyssen, Elena Benarroch, Maribel Verdú, Vicente del Bosque, Lola Flores or the late Duchess of Alba.

Now it is Daniel Ek, who has set his sights on the municipality. The young entrepreneur, who has revolutionised the music industry over the last 15 years, has fallen in love with Marbella.

Born in Stockholm, when he was only 14 years old, he set up a web page creation business from his home. He hired other young people from his class, to whom he lent mobiles and video games in exchange for their collaboration.

He was rejected as an employee by Google because he did not have a university degree but now his company is currently valued at €2.5 billion.

Megayacht spotted

THE megayacht Lady Moura, 105 metres long and considered one of the most luxurious yachts in the world, has revisited Marbella and its presence has been visible from the promenade.

The season for luxury yachts is starting in Marbella, even though there is no place for them to dock they still visit the town, anchor off the coast and the guests come ashore via shuttles.

The Lady Moura, which is among the largest yachts in the world, arrived in Marbella, where she has been a regular in recent years, after spending time in different parts of the Balearic Islands. It is owned by Mexican businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, who reportedly paid around €125 million in 2021 to buy it from Saudi tycoon

ON Sunday April 21, from 11am onwards, more than 200 swimmers will meet in the El Cable Ciudad de Marbella Winter Crossing. A sporting event, which was originally scheduled for March, but had to be postponed due to the bad weather.

Participants will face a challenging 2,000 metre course in the shape of a triangle, with the El Cable

Built in 1990, the yacht has space for 27 guests in its 15 suites and a crew of 71. A sign of the luxury is the 24-carat gold lettering on the sides that identifies the name from a distance. The megayacht has a heliport with a helicopter, a cinema, operating theatre, discotheque and gymnasium, to name but a few services.

200 swimmers

Tower as the main point. The activity will begin with the collection of bibs from 9am, extending until 30 minutes before the start of the competition. Swimmers without wetsuits will start the race promptly at 11am, followed 10 minutes later by those who choose to wear neoprene.

The presentation of trophies to the top three finishers in each category is scheduled for 1pm, celebrating the effort and performance of the participants. In this exciting aquatic day, 240 swimmers from various regional and national clubs are expected to participate.

ESTEPONA Town Hall inaugurated the new pedestrian boulevard which has created one of the longest promenades in the country. The remodelling project of the Avenida España has made it into a large boulevard for pedestrian use that runs for almost two kilometres.

The remodelling of this section of the old N-340 road, which crosses the town from east to west along the beachfront, has been carried out in several phases and has completely changed the look of the town.

This initiative, aimed at opening up the ‘urban garden’ of Estepona’s town centre to the Mediterranean Sea, places Estepona at the forefront of sustainable cities that are committed to quality of life, the well-being of citizens, the environment and ample space for pedestrians.

In addition to the remodelling of Ave-

nida España, more than 130 streets have been renovated in the town and a pioneering network of car parks has been created at a cost of just €1, bringing to life the concept of ‘Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol’.

For the inauguration, a full programme of leisure activities was organised, ranging from parades to free tastings and musical performances. It all kicked off at 8pm on Friday April 5 with the ribbon cutting by the mayor and was followed by a circus parade with a brass band, flamethrowers, jugglers, stilt walkers, unicycles, clowns and trapeze artists.

In the Plaza García Caparrós a free tasting of churros with chocolate was laid on and musical performances entertained the crowds in the Plaza with concerts by Los Piratas and the duo Azúcar Moreno.

MARBELLA Town Hall hosted the first coordination meeting between the organisers and all the council departments involved in the E1 competition, the electric Formula 1 of the sea.

E1, the Offshore Electric Formula 1, is a new global sport devised by Rodi Basso, an Italian engineer who has collaborated with NASA, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing, E1 will be held in locations including Monaco, Hong Kong, Geneva, Venice and in June in Puerto Banús.

A HUGE bench is being installed on the Peñoncillo path in Manilva, which will be part of the route of the giant benches of Andalucia.

This unique setting will become part of the ‘Rincones con encanto’ (Charming corners) of the municipality one of the Peñoncillo viewpoints. In Manilva, sitting at this height, users will be able to enjoy a fantastic panoramic view of the coast and the surrounding mountain ranges, including the Sierra Bermeja, Crestillina, El Hacho de Gaucín and even the Concha de Marbella. It is a functional element but it’s also fun and original.

Counterfeit bags

OFFICERS of the National Police have seized over 800 counterfeit leather goods, on sale in a shop in Marbella, which reproduced the logos of luxury brands.

National Police said in a statement that the operation resulted in the arrest of two people, a woman who ran the business, and a man, based in the province of Cadiz, who supplied the merchandise.

The investigation was started following a complaint by a legal representative of several affected brands, who went to po-

lice headquarters to report the illicit marketing and distribution of handbags that reproduced the distinctive brands of the firms he represented.

Apparently, the counterfeit leather goods were acquired through online sales websites in Asia and subsequently sold as genuine in the shop.

The investigation led to the seizure of a large quantity of leather goods including bags, belts, wallets and backpacks as well as other items bearing the logos of prestigious brands.

The Golden Visa VOX Pop

THE Golden Visa - we asked people on the streets of the province what they thought about Spain’s Golden Visa and its pending removal. Spain’s president Pedro Sanchez said that the scheme would be scrapped to make access to affordable housing for Spaniards “a right instead of a speculative business.”

MARY from Bristol stated “This visa was only a sweetener for Brits after Brexit, but it has never driven us to buy houses. I don’t think anything will change because of this.”

Ann Nelson on holiday in the region said “I’ve always dreamed of retiring in Spain, and the ‘golden visa’ scheme seemed like a good way to get a visa after Brexit. Now, I’m not sure what this means for my plans.”

Rhys Morgan from Britain is in favour of the proposal. “One wonders what has taken Pedro Sanchez so long to get around to disclaiming his inheritance. The ‘Golden Visa’ policy is part of the collapsing scenery of Mariano Rajoy’s response to the Eurozone crisis.” And believes, “attracting ‘foreign investment’ is not what it would say on the charge sheet if this cynical policy, which almost openly gives a licence to money laundering, ever goes to court, which of course it will not.”

Fifty-seven-year-old Yvonne, a holidaymaker from England, expressed scepticism about the programme’s impact. Drawing parallels with the UK property market, she confirmed: “I don’t know how the system works in Spain, but the challenge faced by average first-time buyers in the UK is accumulating the deposit to get on the property market ladder. I can’t see how the termination of the Golden Visa will directly address these issues.”

Twenty-four-year-old native, David Molina Martínez currently in the process of buying his first home said: “If it does have any impact at all, I think it will be minor as house prices are high anyway.”

Finally, we caught up with 36-yearold Sylvia. A Dutch national, Sylvia moved to Spain 18 months ago. Sylvia added: “I don’t think scrapping the Golden Visa will make any difference to anything! There will always be loopholes for the rich to get into a country and there will always be working-class people who find it difficult to buy real estate.”

This feedback offers some insight into the opinions of the people that may be directly impacted by Spain’s decision to end the ‘golden visa’ programme. Big goat giveaway

MORE than 600 goats, less than 100 inhabitants. For some years now, on Alicudi, a volcanic island in the Aeolian islands near Sicily, wild goats have become a big problem.

On an island of only five square kilometres, and where less than 100 people live permanently, the animals are causing damage to the island’s typical plant species and to a substantial portion of the island’s dry stone walls, which support the so-called ‘lenze’ (plots of land facing the sea in the southern part of the

It’s an emergency to which the mayor has responded by offering the animals as gifts to breeders. Mayor Riccardo Gullo, has published, through the Department of Agriculture, a public notice which gives the goats away for free and states, “those interested can go and get them.”

Animal rights activists are appa-

lled as this, “opens up the possibility for these wonderful animals to be slaughtered,” said the Italian Association for the Defence of Animals and the Environment (Aidaa), in a statement.

Meanwhile, the giveaway has been a runaway success. “We’ve seen an explosion of requests,” the mayor wrote on Facebook.

A staple or unaffordable luxury?

GAINING in popularity in the UK and a staple in Spain for hundreds of years, co ee is an essential which is fast becoming una ordable.

According to the International Co ee Organisation (ICO,) the cost of co ee

beans reached an all-time high in February this year. The price of co ee in Spanish shops rose by 23 per cent in February 2024 compared to the same month in 2021, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE),

Spain is a major manufacturer of soluble co ee and producer of ca einated roasted co ee. Nevertheless, most of the co ee consumed in Spain is imported, amounting to almost 400,000 tonnes.

Most imports come from countries in Africa, Central America and Asia, such as Brazil, Ethiopia and Vietnam. Co ee cultivation is vulnerable to drought as the plant requires plenty of water, and reduced bean crops mean that demand is outstripping supply.

The robusta beans from Central Africa and Asia have been increasing drastically in the past decade and a half, and by 50 per cent since the beginning of this year from €1,383 per tonne to €3,923, according to the ICO. Arabica beans have become 60 per cent more expensive since October 2023.

Another reason for the price increase is distribution problems, with cargo ships avoiding the troublesome Red Sea route.

Near Death Festival

YOU can almost guarantee that whatever idea for a festival you can come up with, one or more Spanish towns will already have thought of it!

The town of As Neves in Galicia honours Saint Martha, the sister of Lazarus who was raised from the dead by Jesus and she was one of the witnesses to that miracle and having fled Palestine performed miracles herself in France.

The festival of Santa Marta de Ribarteme takes place on July 29 each year and is dedicated to those fortunate enough to have managed to cheat death and is therefore generally known as the Festival of Near Death Experiences. Following a mass of celebration of St Martha at the parish church of San José de Ribarteme, there is a procession which winds through the streets of the town, but as well as

the traditional carrying of religious statues, there is a parade of open coffins as well.

Each coffin contains the live body of someone who has escaped death in the previous year and they are carried by relati-

ves or friends in a solemn parade to the sound of church bells following a tradition which can be traced back to the early 1700s. Children are not ignored although if any are considered eligible for the parade, they will

walk alongside an empty coffin carrying a candle. The procession ends up in the local cemetery, with those taking part singing ‘Virgin Santa Marta, star of the north, we bring you those who saw death’.

Raccoons run

FIVE of the raccoons which escaped from Leeuwarden’s AquaZoo woodland nature reserve are still at large.

The Stichting AAP charity, a shelter which takes in exotic mammals from all over Europe, sent 12 raccoons to AquaZoo at the end of March where they were housed in a new, specially-built enclosure.

Two sections of wire netting had not been securely fixed and the same day that they arrived, 11 of the raccoons managed to dig their way out, leaving just one of them behind.

Cage traps were laid out and baited with tempting marshmallows, cherry syrup, sweets and eggs, all of which raccoons are partial to.

Six have been recovered so far, with the most recent returnee found in one of the cages on the morning of April 13. None will be on public view for some time, as AquaPark’s director Jeroen Loomeijer explained that the animals need to recover from the upheaval of their move to Leeuwarden and their time on the run.

Employees from the Friesland provincial authority as well the local water board continue to search for the five missing raccoons, although Loomeijer said the chances of recovering them diminished with each day. They survive well in Netherlands’ conditions and would probably find a safe place where they could settle in, like other escaped raccoons in Limburg and the Achterhoek area.

As all the raccoons were neutered, they will not be able to reproduce, and the AquaZoo director said they would probably die natural deaths but could also fall victim to traffic or other accidents.

Views on drought

IN a recent Facebook post by the Euro Weekly News, the readers shared their thoughts on the ongoing drought and its e ects on Spanish residents.

Lyn Fryer shared: “Twenty years here, never known such a long period without proper rainfall. I experienced water rationing in the Channel Islands when we lacked an extra reservoir. You really feel for the farmers and with the loss of crops, this will hit the food supply drastically. We all need to conserve our consumption of water drastically.”

Andy McCluskey emphasised: “It’s about time they built many more desalination plants.”

AMID concerns about Kate Middleton’s health, a recent YouGov survey found that she’s the most admired royal among the public.

Her popularity has gone up, with 76 per cent of Britons feeling positive about her. That’s six points higher than earlier this year.

Her husband, Prince William, is also well-liked, with 73 per cent of people having a favourable view of him.

But more people (21 per cent) feel negatively about Prince Charles compared to Kate’s 15 per cent.

Princess Anne comes in third in popularity, with 71 per cent of people liking her.

She also has the fewest negative views among all the royals, with only 13 per cent

Judish Dominique Wolfenegg revealed: “We have a desalination plant here on Lanzarote, but had to face huge problems last summer when one of the pipelines broke. No watering of plants, no washing of dishes/clothes, no showers - awful in the middle of the heatwave.”

In Costa del Sol, water restrictions were imposed, prohibiting the lling of private pools, including those in tourist homes. Business owners protested in Malaga, claiming that their life income would “go to ruin.”

Some comments addressed this but Heath Savage mentioned: “If reduced use of pools is all we have to concern ourselves with, we will be ne.”

Ron’s Place

RON’S PLACE, located at 8 Silverdale Road in Birkenhead, Merseyside, has been recognised as a hidden treasure of Outsider Art.

It has been granted a Grade II listing by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) following a recommendation from Historic England.

For over 30 years, this remarkable art space was tucked away within an unassuming Victorian semi-detached villa.

It was created by Ron Gittins, whose intricate and captivating artworks remained unseen until his passing in 2019.

In his ground- oor at, Gittins meticulously decorated the space with murals depicting historical scenes.

He also crafted unique concrete replaces resembling a lion’s head, a Minotaur’s head, and even a Roman bread oven.

man of Pulp, expressed his admiration for Ron’s Place, stating: “A small number of people on this planet have known for a while that Ron’s Place is a very Special Place, but from now on, it is o cial: Ron’s Place has been given listed status!

“The work of one unique gentleman in the north of England has been recognised nationally.

Globally even.

Hallelujah!”

Sarah Charlesworth, Listing Team Leader North for Historic England, described Ron’s creation as a prime example of Outsider Art in England.

“Ron’s Place is testament to the unique artistic achievements and vision of Ron Gittins over four decades,” Sarah con rmed.

“Ron’s creations have inspired action from people in the local area to raise funds to purchase the building and secure the survival of his legacy.”

An elderly lady Pesto champion

THE best pesto in the world is made by Mattia Bassi from Genoa, 56 years old, a naval engineer who lives on the Acquasanta hills in the western part of Genoa.

Bassi beat the 100 competitors from all over the world who challenged each other in the World Championship of Pesto Genovese judged by 30 experts from all over the country.

During the nal two others were awarded prizes: the oldest competitor, 90-year-old Maria Carbone, from Davagna, a small town in the Genoa hinterland, and Kelly Rocha who won in the earlier stages of the competion in Itajaì in Southern Brazil (almost 10,000 kilometres from Genoa).

Other foreign contestants also took part in the nal: Nyusuke Ota, a Japanese chef who is currently doing work experience in Florence, and Jeanne Beauvais, from Paris, who was selected during one of the preliminary rounds held under the Ei el Tower. Others came from: the United States, Spain, England, Holland, Germany, South Africa, Malta and Switzerland.

Forty minutes were allotted to each competitor to make the best pesto and to win this coveted prize as the world’s best pesto chef. The jury was composed of industry insiders, journalists, technicians, researchers and food bloggers. The winner, Mattia Bassi, said his secret was, “working with his

FATOU, the world’s oldest gorilla, and Berlin Zoo’s oldest resident, celebrated her 67th birthday on April 13.

In the wild a gorilla will live, at most, until it is 35 years old. In captivity, with human care, this can extend to 50 but Fatou shows no signs of slowing down.

She arrived in what was still called West Berlin in 1959, two years before the Wall was built. Fatou’s exact age is uncertain but according to the zoo, she must have been around two when she arrived in Europe.

She was sold by a seaman in a Marseille bar and from there she found her way to Germany and, eventually, to Berlin Zoo.

Since then her birthday has always been celebrated on April 13, the day she arrived there.

This year, Fatou’s birthday presents began arriving on April 12, when she received a basket with leaves, twigs, lettuce and fruit although as she is now toothless, she prefers soft food.

As always, she spent the day in her own enclosure which adjoins the zoo’s main gorilla group, owing to her advanced years and frailty.

“Fatou is free to make contact with her fellow great apes whenever she wants, but prefers to enjoy her retirement in peace,” the zoo explained.

came the Berlin Zoo’s oldest resident, following the death of Ingo the flamingo, who had lived in the zoo since 1955 and died in February 2024 when he was 75 years old.

The zoo had no clue as to his origins, although a ring on Ingo’s leg was inscribed ‘Cairo, 23.6.1948’.

Ingo was also exceptionally long-lived for a amingo, whose normal lifespan in the wild is usually calculated at approximately 30 years. Announcing his demise, zoo director Andreas Knieriem said a post-mortem showed that “multiple age-related changes” had been responsible for Ingo’s death.

Port wine varnish

MIGUEL and Filipa Mateus, are violin makers and opened their workshop over two decades ago. It has already become known throughout the country and beyond, largely thanks to social media and word of mouth.

Filipa’s great-great-grandfather, Agostinho Pereira, was a violin maker at the old Casa Duarte in Sé.

“We are children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of people from Ribeira, Sé and Miragaia,” said Miguel. His great-great-grandfather was part of the Royal Guard and played the cello.

Self-taught, he learnt the art of repairing stringed instruments on his own, especially violins. He met Filipa and it was only a matter of time before he opened his workshop. Today, he regrets not having started sooner. “This is where the best sound in Porto is born,” he says.

There are no imitations at O cina dos Violinos. There’s always classical music in the air. It’s an enchanted world with bows, strings and horsehair and there is space for socialising and experimenting with musical instruments. There’s also the workshop where Miguel and Filipa build and restore violins.

“The violins we sell are high-end and all made by me,” said Miguel. They take an average of two or three months to build and can cost anything up to €5,000.

“We’re the only violin makers to put drops of Port wine in the varnish,” reveals the craftsman, confessing that the musicians who play with his ‘Mateus’ are unanimous in saying that “they’re sweet instruments.”

Celebrate St George’s Day

IF you happen to be in Trafalgar Square, London on Sunday April 21, then prepare to witness celebrations of all that is perceived as being quintessentially English.

It might be two days before St George’s Day on April 23 but the iconic square, will for the 17th time turn red and white in honour of England’s Patron Saint.

There will be Sea Shanties, Morris Dancing, a photo opportunity with Pearly Kings and Queens, a Cockney Singalong and the chance to defeat a fiery dragon.

with a significant English population will be organising their own entertainment, often using the day as an ideal excuse to raise much needed funds for charity.

St George, who since 1817 has appeared on the reverse of British Gold Sovereigns is renowned for slaying a mythical dragon to save a princess in distress but how he became a British hero despite believed to have been born in Palestine is something of a conundrum.

One thing is sure and that he has been part of the English psyche for centuries and according to one report, he

was declared a patron saint of England and Catalonia, as well as Venice, Genoa and Portugal in the Middle Ages because he was the personification of the ideals of Christian chivalry.

According to legend, St George fought and killed a dragon on the flat-topped Dragon Hill in Uffington, Berkshire, where it is said no grass grows where the dragon’s blood trickled down.

The Prince and Princes of Wales have a relationship with the saint as their oldest son was christened George and their youngest, Louis was born on St George’s Day.

Broadening horizons

Four years ago, Louise Macfarlane, originally from England, took a bold step towards her dream by relocating to Spain permanently.

WHAT initially drew her to the country was its sunny climate, but it soon proved to be more than just a romantic notion; it became the solution to her health is sues. The abundant sunshine and the therapeutic properties of the Mediterranean sea proved to be the best remedy for her bodily pains.

Having worked as a nurse in the past, Louise decided to turn her hobby of crafting into a business venture upon settling in Spain. This led to the creation of Crafty Corner, a space dedicated to fostering friendships and connecting individuals from various nationalities within the community.

Louise has developed a deep affection for her life in Spain. She cherishes the climate, the tranquility, and the unhurried pace of Spanish living, remarking, “I never need a coat here, it’s fantastic,” with a hint of humour.

Despite missing her friends, family, and familiar shops back in England,

Though navigating paperwork and driving in Spain initially posed challenges, Louise has adapted to these differences, viewing them as part of her new normal. She now drives confidently in her daily life. Expressing a desire to learn Spanish and make Spanish friends, she muses, “I would love to engage in language exchanges and meet new people over a cup of coffee.” For Louise, life is about forging connections and broadening horizons.

A REPORT by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) found that women in Ireland were more likely to earn less than those working in Northern Ireland. The report’s authors suggested that Northern Ireland had a narrower gender pay gap owing to its higher percentage of female public sector workers.

Stormy weather

STORM KATHLEEN, which swept across Ireland on April 6, left thousands of homes and businesses without electricity, affecting 34,000 customers at one point. Dozens of flights had to be cancelled as the Met Eireann weather service issued a Status Yellow gale as gusts reached up to 110 kilometres per hour.

PEACEFUL Vadso in the Arctic Circle near the Russian border is seeking European Commission permission to introduce a time zone with 26-hour days. Wenche Pedersen admitted she was unsure how the MOREtime project would work but said it would offer visitors and prospective residents the chance to enjoy quality time.

FIGURES from Statistics Norway (SSB) showed inflation of 3.9 per cent for the year ending March 2024. Growth had slowed for the third consecutive month, the ASS said, pointing out that with the exception of September 2023, this was the first time 12-month inflation had dropped below 4 per cent since January 2022.

Pedal alert

TRAFFIC accidents took the lives of 684 people in the Netherlands in 2023, 61 fewer than during 2022, although for the fourth consecutive year the majority of victims were cyclists, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) announced. Of the 270 cyclists involved, 40 per cent were riding an e-bike and almost half were over the age of 75.

Bomb scare

A 17-YEAR-OLD, believed to be a “runner” for a gang was detained and remanded after he was spotted carrying at least two kilos of dynamite through Gothenburg Central Station, a local newspaper reported. A police officer present at the arrest said afterwards that the explosives were ready to be ignited.

Flights off

THE inauguration of the first direct connection between the Algarve and the US has been postponed and all the planned flights between Faro and Newark have been removed from the airline’s 2024 schedule. Citing “airline sources”, the Simple Flying website said the launch is now planned for the summer of 2025.

Logo fail

EDUARDO AIRES, Portugal’s leading graphic designer, was paid €74,000 to create a new logo for the current government’s predecessors. Criticised as “unpatriotic” and “woke” when it was introduced, the logo has now been withdrawn, while Aires lamented that his design had been turned into “a projectile weapon.”

Cobbled up

FAMILIES in Copenhagen’s Christiana district, tired of drug trafficking and its associated violence, took matters into their own hands by tearing up the cobbles in the street where cannabis sellers openly set up their stalls to prevent their return. The event was attended by the city mayor and Denmark’s Justice minister.

Fjord’s demise

A CROWD of 1,000 lined the banks of the Vejle Fjord to attend an open-air “funeral” for this inlet which is badly polluted by agricultural runoff from factory farming. Last year, this country had the heaviest deoxygenation in 25 years,” Christian Fromberg, who organised the event for Greenpeace, told the AFP news agency.

A REPORT by the Bertelsman Foundation based on figures provided by the Federal Statistical Office found that Germany was getting older, with increased ageing evident in almost all states. The same report revealed that the percentage of over-65s would increase from 22 per cent in 2020 to 28 per cent by 2040.

THE next Oktoberfest in Munich will be “cannabis-free” although the drug was partially decriminalised throughout Germany on April 1. Regional president Markus Soder, recently declared that although millions of litres of beer would be consumed during the annual celebration, Bavaria would not become a “stoner’s paradise.”

CANDIDATES in this year’s European elections disagree over using TikTok during their campaigns. Socialist Raphaël Glucksmann has given up his 60,000 as he did not want to “play the fool” while Samuel Lafont, a strategist for the nationalist Reconquete party, said that Glucksman “was shooting himself in the foot.”

Meaty problem

THE Council of State, France’s top administrative court, suspended a government decree banning the use of 21 terms like “steak” or “ham” frequently applied when labelling plant-based products. The court said there was “serious doubt” regarding the ban’s legality, and it now awaits a ruling from the EU’s Court of Justice.

POPULAR YouTuber Beata Rodas, known for her gaming and lifestyle advice, is suspected of evading €80,000 in taxes, the Iltalehti newspaper reported. The 29-year-old, who has 385,000 subscribers allegedly conducted business under her professional name without filing a 2019-2020 tax return.

JANNE MAKELA, a researcher at Helsinki’s University of the Arts, maintained that state radio Yleisradio was instrumental in disseminating the music of classical composer Jean Sibelius. Showcasing the country’s cultural offerings on a global stage “significantly enhanced” Sibelius’s stature, Makela concluded.

Cold comfort

ALTHOUGH temperatures rose to 24 degrees in early April, people visiting or living on the coast were reminded that sea swimming was banned until there were lifeguards on the beaches. The Coastal Rescue Service added that despite the fine weather, the water was still exceptionally cold “and would not be healthy for swimmers.”

KAZAKHSTAN and Belgium agreed to create a joint business forum during Trade official Kairat Torebayev’s visit to Brussels, which included talks with Rose Donck from Belgium’s Foreign Trade Agency. Two hundred companies from both countries will take part in talks scheduled to take place in Belgium throughout 2024.

MINISTERS approved plans for a postage stamp commemorating the late Silvio Berlusconi, former prime minister and an often-scandalous tycoon who died in June 2023, aged 86. “He was a great Italian who served and honoured the Republic in all his roles,” declared senator Licia Ronzulli from the Forza Italia party.

ITALY’S higher education system was ranked seventh-best in the world and the second-best in the European Union according to the latest QS World University Rankings. Globally, Italy followed the US, the UK, China, Germany and Canada while inside the European Union, it was overtaken only by Germany.

Burn-out

FRAGRANCE company Jo Malone’s profits fell by 15.7 per cent to £24.4 million (€28.48 million) during the year that ended in June 2023. The company, which is owned by Estee Lauder, blamed inflation and the cost-of-living crisis for a drop-off in sales of perfume and candles costing up to £370 (€432.83) each.

JOSEP OLIU, president of Banco Sabadell, rejected suggestions of a merger with any of its competitors, and Unicajainparticular. Talkingto the media before the Annual General Meeting on April 10, Oliu said the bank’s roadmap followed an unaccompanied route, focusing on increased profitability and its share price.

PHARMACEUTICALS company AstraZeneca’s Pascal Soriot could be the first FTSE 100 chief executive who takes home a £150 million (€175 million) paypacket if investors approve salary and bonus proposals. Two shareholder advisory groups are now encouraging shareholders to vote against the “excessive” pay plan.

CATALONIA’S regional government has ordered Endesa to compensate 82,000 clients with sums of between €30 and €75 after its Environment department found that they had been overcharged. Endesa sources attributed the discrepancies to “profound and continuous changes in the regulations.”

FORMER Shell chief executive Ben Van Beurden hinted recently that the company could leave London’s Stock Exchange and list in New York as US investors were “more positive” about fossil fuels. Van Beurden also suggested that the UK market “massively undervalued the £180 billion ((€166 billion) company.

Goodbye Argentina

HSBC’S decision to sell off its business in Argentina for $550 million (€506.9 million) will cost it $1 billion (€921.7 million).

HSBC Argentina, with more than 100 branches and 3,100 employees, is to be bought by Grupo Financiero Galicia, a major private financial group.

Currently Argentina’s fifth-largest bank, it will become the country’s second most-important after Banco Nacion once the deal goes through.

London-based HSBC, the largest in Europe, has been battling Argentina’s unstable exchange rate for years after disembarking in 1997 on taking

BASF’S Tarragona subsidiary awaits a decision from its German parent company regarding a future recycling plant for electric vehicle batteries.

Director general Carles Navarro said on April 10 that he expected a decision from the chemicals’ multinational “within the next few months.”

Although Navarro avoided going into details regarding the sums involved, the Spanish media revealed last February that the recycling installation would cost between €500 and €700 million.

Brussels is already committed to a €100 million grant, while there should be further subsidies from Spain’s national and regional governments.

PRICE inflation was easing, said the UK’s biggest supermarket chain Tesco as it reported pretax profits of £2.3 billion (€2.68 billion).

Sales rose 4.4 per cent to £68.2 billion (€79.6 billion) in the year ending on February 24, chief executive Ken Murphy announced, adding that the company was aware that “things were still difficult” for many customers.

Tesco had worked hard to cut prices, Murphy said, with schemes directed at offering shoppers better value for money.

Chery arrives in Barcelona

CHERY AUTO will be the first Chinese manufacturer to build vehicles in Spain.

Chery is one of several Chinese carmakers selling low-priced electric and fossil fuel vehicles in European Union countries, including Spain.

Negotiations with EV Motors have now concluded, said sources quoted by the financial daily Cinco Dias. The formal signing is scheduled for April 19.

Production will begin at the disused Nissan site in Barcelona’s Zona Franca logistics and industrial area where the Japanese company halted its Barcelona operation in late 2021 when the last e-NV200 electric van left the assembly line, taking with it approximately 1,600 jobs.

Tous reported a €477 million turnover for 2023, an increase of 6 per cent on the previous year and 21 per cent more than its 2019 sales. Net profits in 2023 rose to €50 million, 40 per cent more than those of 2022 and 72 per cent up on 2019 before the pandemic slashed sales.

DESPITE future net zero carbon regulations, UK energy company EnQuest will begin drilling at the biggest North Sea oil field to be discovered in 20 years. Two sites adjoining the Kraken oil and gas field 80 miles (128.7 kilometres) off Shetland have the potential to produce between 600 million and one billion barrels of crude oil, EnQuest said.

WELL of course the attitudes and actions of the police have changed; what do people expect? Over the last couple of decades the protectors of law and order have simply had no choice. The standards of respect and lawful compliance from certain sections of the public have now sunk to such alarming ‘pit’ levels that it has almost literally become a case of adapt or die.

The days of your friendly boys in blue have long gone. In that far off era the very worst the beat copper could expect would be to have their tall hat knocked off by a tipsy late night reveller.

All he required to keep the peace was his (seldom used) truncheon, a whistle and an intermittently placed phone kiosk to inform his local station that ‘all was quiet’. He certainly didn’t expect to be spat on, attacked and possibly killed as he went about his nightly vigil.

The problem with today’s youngsters is they have never experienced this long past amicable form of relationship with the police.

Today’s youth have sadly never known what it is like to safely walk home after the last bus has gone, using any route you chose without worrying you may inadvertently broach on someone else’s ‘territory’ and get beaten, or even killed for ‘showing disrespect’! No wonder the police now waddle about in knife proof vests, laden down with Tasers, expandable night sticks, pepper sprays, body ‘cams’ and occasional firearms.

It is simply not their fault. To combat today’s very real threat of a violent lawless anarchy, they have to weigh up the risks and act accordingly. They are reacting, not instigating and those among us who are law abiding and peace seeking should give them all the encouragement we can.

Writing these observations did however remind me of a funny story relating to a sadly departed fatherin-law of mine. Pat was the only policeman in a small Tipperary village in

Ireland. In his whole 40-year career, he only arrested one person.

The perp’s ‘crime’? Peeing in the large open grate of the local pub! I also understand that after he was arrested, Policeman Pat wheeled him home in a wheelbarrow! Now that was what proper policing was all about.

Well folks, they final admitted it. After years of excuses, including the citing of purely imaginary fires in the archive department, the BBC have finally come clean and admitted that, to save money, they actually recorded over practically all the iconic Top of The Pops tapes prior to 1969.

This means that as Little Arrows was released in 1968, I have now become a victim of the official ‘Lost BBC Tapes’. So, not only did I lose a fortune by coming second to Hey Judethe Beatles biggest number one seller of all time, but all my TOP appearances have gone up in smoke. And you thought your timing was bad!?

Xmas blessings

DUBLIN Airport’s long-standing tradition of blessing planes on Christmas Day may come to an end due to new safety regulations.

For 76 years, a priest would bless planes by taking holy water onto the airfield.

However, recent security changes at the airport have made it difficult to continue this tradition.

The airport’s operator, DAA, explains that access to the airside area is now restricted to airport operations only, meaning non-operational activities like plane blessings can’t happen there anymore.

However, DAA is looking into other ways to keep the Christmas blessing ceremony going.

Some reports suggested that a request

for a non-religious blessing prompted the change, but the airport clarified that it was solely due to security concerns.

The tradition began in 1947 with Aer Lingus planes, named after Irish Christian saints.

It expanded to include Ryanair planes over the years, but with increased air traffic, individual blessings became impractical. Now, a general blessing is done by the airport chaplain from the airfield.

With millions of passengers passing through Dublin Airport each year, safety is crucial.

The airport is working on finding a way to continue the Christmas blessing ceremony while following new regulations mandated by the Irish Aviation Authority.

A RECENT study by Omio, a travel website from Germany, looked at how much a pint of beer costs in different European cities.

They found some capital cities in Europe where you can get a pint of beer without spending too much money.

Whether you love beer or just want to relax with a drink while exploring, these cities offer great options that won’t empty your wallet. Minsk, the capital of Belarus, is at the top of the list. You can get a pint there for a little over €1.

If you prefer more popular tourist spots, Sofia in Bulgaria is a good choice. A pint there costs around €1.93.

It’s known for its attractions like the Museum Strana Mini and Victory Square, and the affordable beer makes it a great place to visit if you’re on a budget.

Chisinau in Moldova comes next, with pints averaging around €1.29.

Sofia has a lot to offer tourists, including landmarks like St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and thermal springs.

It’s a charming city with places to visit like Arcul De Triumf, Kishinev Cathedral, and Stephen the Great Central Park.

Pristina in Kosovo and Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina also have an affordable beer, priced at €1.99 and €2.04 respectively.

They offer unique experiences for travellers.

Other cities with cheap beer include Baku in Azerbaijan, Tbilisi in Georgia, and Yerevan in Armenia, where pints cost €1.35, €1.69, and €1.83 respectively.

FUENGIROLA is celebrating the 13th Dog Day at the Sohail Castle on Sunday April 21. The day will start at 10am in the Plaza de España, where a canine walk to the Castle will begin.

The mayor of Fuengirola, Ana Mula said, “we will be able to enjoy another year of celebrating Dog Day, outdoors in a fantastic setting of the Sohail Castle. We want it to be a day of conviviality in Fuengirola, since we are an animal friendly town where we promote the coexistence between citizens and pets.”

At the start of the day, participants will all be given gifts for their pets and the walk will run from Plaza de España, along the Paseo Marítimo, to the Parque del Castillo, where the marquees will house the different associations and businesses that collaborate with the event.

Mula announced that this year, apart from the exhibitions, parades, raffles and adoptions, there will be a National Canine Competition valid for the Andalucian Championship, organised by the Canine Society of the Costa del Sol. “This is a new activity that is being set up with the aim of promoting not only health and beauty in dog breeds but also working dogs,” explained the mayor. Michael Carrington CASARES Council and CIT Casares have presented the eighth DegustaCasares Gastronomic and Cultural Fair to be held on Saturday April 20 and Sunday April 21.

This year sees a contest of Gazpacho Casareño in its many varieties that will take place on Saturday with a tasting among the attendees, and the contest of professional ham cutters, which is held on Sunday with the sale of all the dishes that are cut at a modest price, explained the president of the CIT, Ángeles Fernández.

These two new activities are in addition to the usual tapas routes, which include their own competition for the dishes most voted for by the public. The mayor, Juan Luis Villalón, said, the intention, “is to highlight the value of our gastronomy, our identity and our roots.” Two days to enjoy Casares, taste the local cuisine and buy artisan and gastronomic products at the street market. In addition, you can learn how to make

honey, make cheese and do crafting. There will also be exhibitions of fandango dancing and traditional trades including sheep shearing. Puerto Banus Xcess

XCESS nightclub will be inaugurated on Saturday April 27 with performances by renowned DJs. The Costa Este hospitality group has invested €3.5 million in the club which will reinforce the marina’s exclusive leisure facilities, according to the company’s general manager, Javier Calle.

According to the company’s CEO, the club is, “conceived and designed for the enjoyment of everyone, which will be distributed, “in three different environments where you can enjoy the best entertainment in the area and delight in a unique experience in which sophistication and fun merge to create unforgettable moments.”

The new club is located in the areas formerly occupied by Seven and Kenia in Puerto Banus. “We could not consider any other location than this, Marbella is internationally renowned and Puerto Banus is the icing on the cake,” said Calle adding that the objective was to make it, “a place where people

have a good time and enjoy the best leisure activities so that nightlife reaches new levels of excellence and excitement.”

With a surface area of 750 square metres, the leisure space will offer, “an excellent musical programme,” and from its inauguration will offer performances by “renowned DJs such as D3LAMO and Abdón,” said Calle, who added that the club, “will cater for all rhythms and musical tastes.”

The opening ceremony will take place on Saturday April 27 in a gathering that will bring together celebrities of Marbella society from midnight until well into the early hours of the morning, and will feature performances by DJs Delamo, Costigan, Diego Marin b2b Ninyo and Abdon.

The club will open its doors to the general public on Saturday May 4, a day that will kick off with a performance by musical shaman Claptone, alongside the club’s DJ, Abdon.

Torremolinos lunch club

A GROUP of expats started the club back in 2017. The group started with four members meeting for lunch usually on Mondays and from then on Wayne Ward and Lisa Ward have organised the weekly venues for food and refreshments.

The first initial meetings were in the El Calvario, Torremolinos in a bar called Los Ridos which for around eight months they met there every week to eat the amazing Sri Lankan food created by Mahesh and Rafael making various different Sri Lankan dishes weekly. The group started growing fast, moving fast from four to around 16 sometimes 20 members.

They have new members join most weeks as they have seen the group on social media and love the look of the club: they have people from UK, Scotland and Ireland, plus visitors from Sweden, America, Australia and Canada.

The group is free and meet in various restaurants in and around Torremolinos. Mijas on horseback

ON Saturday April 20 the traditional equestrian route through the Sierra de Mijas will take place, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. For this special day, Mijas Town Hall has organised a carefully planned circular route which will start at 9am from El Esparragal and finish at the same point at around 3pm.

Mijas councillor, Eloy Belmonte, who launched the event, spoke enthusiastically about the natural environment of Mijas, especially the Sierra de Mijas and said that meetings like this, “engender respect, care and love for animals, and promote awareness for a habitat as rich and sensitive as the Sierra de Mijas.” Those interested in participating can register by calling 670 066 075 or 635 976 703.

The route will end with lunch and a race in

which children and adults can participate. In previous years, almost 100 riders have taken part, so the organisers are confident that this year’s event will be a success.

“The equestrian route through the Sierra de Mijas is one of the most beautiful routes and is a meeting point, not only for lovers of such a noble animal as the horse, but for anyone who respects and values the environment,” said Juan López-Ayala, president of the Peña Caballista Mijeña.

Mijas is one of the municipalities in Spain with the largest number of horses, proof of this is the route along the beach which took place in February and which was a total success with 325 horses taking part as well as horse-drawn carriages, the highest attendance rate ever recorded.

International Dance Day

ON the occasion of International Dance Day, Torremolinos Town Hall has organised a programme of dance shows that will be supported by a photographic exhibition starting on Sunday April 28.

With the celebration of International Dance Day, Torremolinos Town Hall aims to commemorate those people who have chosen dance as a profession or hobby without cultural, ethnic or political barriers. It is intended to encourage participation and public awareness of the importance of dance as a cultural and artistic form.

On Sunday April 28 at 11.45am the students of the Royal Family academy, led by Lucía Barroco, will perform in the Plaza Costa del Sol. At 12.15pm it will be the turn of the Centro de Danza de Torremolinos, directed by Carmen Crespo, in the same place. The Avenida Palma de Mallorca will host the performance by the Asociación Cultural Juan Navarro at 12.30pm.

From April 29 until May 31 the town centre will also host the exhibition ‘A walk through the dance of Torremolinos’, an exhibition of photographs of dances of Torremolinos whose aim is to pay tribute to the people who have been involved in Torremolinos with their own academy or show over the years.

Márquez Dance Academy will dance in the Plaza Costa del Sol, and at 7pm the Manuel Roldán Dance Academy will dance in the Avenida Palma de Mallorca.

International Jazz Day Green Expedition

TUESDAY April 30 is International Jazz Day, a day declared by UNESCO, and at the Clarence Jazz Club in Torremolinos they will be celebrating it with an international line-up from Holland together with Spanish singer Paula Bilá.

The LEANING IN Underground with Paula Bilá is an international band based in Amsterdam. It is a collaboration between Wes Montgomery / Wynton Kelly style jazz band The LEANING IN Underground and Spanish singer Paula Bilá, with roots in folk and jazz music. Their first album was recorded in Berlin in January 2024 and will be released during a tour of the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Spain scheduled for the autumn.

LEANING IN Underground started as a spin-off of Linus Eppinger Quartet, the high profile rhythm section band with Doug Weiss and Jorge Rossy,

with whom Linus recorded his prestigious debut album ‘Leaning In’. After five tours in Holland, Germany and Switzerland, they started working with Paula, stylistically expanding their repertoire with music from Spain and Latin America.

Paula Bilá is a singer and composer from Cadiz and is self-taught. At the age of 18 she moved to Ireland, where she recorded her debut album in cooperation with producer Bill Shanley. Recently, Paula moved to Amsterdam and started collaborating with jazz musicians, resulting in several successful ensembles, including a duo with Italian bassist Mauro Cottone and the current project: The LEANING IN Underground with Paula Bilá.

THE Youth Association of La Cala of Mijas with help from the town hall, are organising the first Green Expedition, an environmental scavenger hunt for the benefit of Mijas Felina. The event will take place on Sunday April 28 at 10am in one of the most beautiful places in the area, the Roza del Aguado Cork Oak Trail.

Mijas councillor for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Marco Cortés, said, “I congratulate you for having this initiative and that the funds are destined to this non-profit association, and furthermore it is promoted in a natural environment, the Roza del Aguado Cork Oak Grove, which is one of the last strongholds of this protected forest mass that Mijas has and one of the most important on the

Costa del Sol.” The cost to participate is just €5 which will be donated to Mijas Felina. “It can be used either to pay for castrations or to help in cases where animals have been run over or are sick,” said the president of Mijas Felina, Cristina Sanchez.

If you are interested in participating, it doesn’t matter how old you are, because the Green Expedition is open to all ages.

Cortés invited families, “to come with their children to enjoy this event and if they don’t know this area of the cork oak forest this is the ideal time to do so because it is a natural beauty that we have here in Mijas and they can learn about the work that Mijas Felina does.”

THE Chiriva plaza in La Carihuela will host the celebration of Koningsdag or Dutch King’s Day on Saturday April 27, a festival which is now in its eighth year and is dedicated to Dutch culture and gastronomy.

“The figures show the importance of the Dutch community in Torremolinos, amounting to more than 700 registered residents today, which represents a growth of more than 20 per cent in just one year,” said the mayor, Margarita del Cid.

The event, organised by the Dutch Community of Torremolinos with the collaboration of the town council, will be held from 1pm until 8pm and will feature live performances by Dutch artists, games for children and more than 17 stands with typical Dutch products, food and drink. Visitors will be able to sample oliebollen, frikandellen, minced meatballs, herring, smoked sausage, ham sandwich, carpaccio sandwich and goat’s cheese sandwich, among others.

SALVA presents an evening of comedy theatre with two superb one-act plays at The Salon Varieties Theatre in Fuengirola from Wednesday April 24 to Sunday April 28.

Heroes is a play by Gerald Sibleyras and adapted for the stage by Tom Stoppard. Winner of the Laurence Olivier Best New Comedy award, in Tom Stoppard’s hilarious and poignant translation of Gérald Sibleyras’ Heroes, we meet three First World War veterans who pass their monotonous filled days in a military hospital by engaging in verbal battles of long-forgotten military campaig grumblings about the staff, and reflections on their lives.

Henri is afflicted by a gammy leg, Gustave suffers from agoraphobia, and Philippe passes out because of a piece of shrapnel lodged in his brain. Their cantankerous camaraderie becomes strained when Gustave conjures up an escape plan.

Looking over the cemetery to the poplars beyond, they dream of freedom.

This will be followed by Theatrical Digs by Jean Mcconnell, a farcical battle of wits, work, agents and mobile phones between a glamorous, conceited actress and an eccentric older performer.

We listen in on two women who meet on a seafront. Their uneasy conversation unfolds with each expressing personal perceptions of their own individual careers, but will they be able to overcome their rivalry to become friends?

EVER wondered where Santa Claus retreats for a well-deserved holiday? This year, the jolly figurehead, Seamus Tobin, traded Lapland’s snowscapes for Fuengirola’s sunny shores.

Hailing from Limerick, Seamus has epitomized Christmas’s spirit through Cantebury Travel’s Lapland excursions. Fuengirola, nestled on the Costa del Sol, may seem an unlikely locale for Santa’s respite.

Yet, its blend of tradition and novelty lured Seamus. Amidst palm

trees and Mediterranean breezes, Santa found solace.

But Santa’s Fuengirola vacation isn’t all sun-soaked lounging. Seamus spiced it up with the Tomahawk challenge at Christy’s Gastro Pub: conquer a hefty 1.4kg tomahawk steak, salad, veggies, and chips in 45 minutes. With determination, Seamus, or rather, Santa, faced the challenge.

His return to the Arctic loomed, marked by beard growth and brow dyeing. While Santa’s feat in 25 minutes astounded, the record, set by Frank Flannery at 17 minutes, still stands. In Fuengirola’s festive embrace, Santa found warmth and adventure, a reminder that even in sun-drenched locales, the spirit of Christmas flourishes.

As Santa bids adieu to his holiday haven, his presence leaves a twinkle of magic behind, echoing the sentiment: wherever Santa roams, the spirit of giving and joy follows suit.

It’s not rocket science

WHAT is it with waiters that refuse to write your order down? They seem to relish the fact that it obviously makes punters feel edgy that they aren’t going to get your order correct and then there’s the smug look they give you when you innocently ask ‘are you going to remember all that?’ ‘Yes’ is the cocky answer usually.

But sometimes they do get a few things wrong and then it’s time for Mr Grumpy to be the smug one ‘‘Told you to write it down smart a**e!’ Then there’s the little computer things they use now. I’ve had problems with those too when you try and go off piste and want to change something on the menu like have chips instead of mash and gawd forbid you want to mess about with a full English breakfast and I always offer to pay extra as well.

Role of the Embassy

I FIRST interviewed Hugh Elliott, His Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, shortly after he arrived in 2019. The past five years have presented many challenges, between Brexit and Covid but I think he can feel very proud of his accomplishments when he looks back on his time here.

I have had the privilege of visiting Hugh Elliott at the Embassy in Madrid for a few interviews this year, each one an eye opener to the scope of issues that the Embassy deals with on a daily basis.

In the first get-together the Ambassador confirmed that mutual investment, business wise between the UK and Spain, is still very buoyant, in spite of Brexit. In the second, we broached the subjects of education and safety.

Education is an area that worries many of us who have children studying in Spain but who may want them to go back to school or to University in the UK, or vice versa.

The Ambassador explained that this has been a topic of great concern and interest for the Embassy also. It was an immense pleasure for him to confirm therefore that at the back end of last year the Embassy finally managed to negotiate a treaty, whereby Spain would recognise the UK’s academic qualifications at A level for example and the UK would recognise Spanish qualifications. The negotiations apparently weren’t too complex as both countries wanted to find solutions; nevertheless, aligning the two systems logically took its time and many months of meetings.

You could see that the Ambassador was well chuffed to reach an agreement on this issue, as well as resolving an illegal firearm issue, but more on that next week!

Thyroid disorders

THYROID DISORDERS, encompassing both underactive and overactive conditions, are a common endocrine issue impacting numerous individuals. An underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism, is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones, leading to a slowdown in bodily functions. Almeria Generous donation

ON the morning of Friday April 12, Andy and Donna Walker, from the Community Choir All Aloud, delivered toys valued at more than €600 to the Children’s Ward at the La Immaculada Hospital in Huercal-Overa.

The donation was paid for from funds raised at the Choir’s coffee morning in March and knowing that the Childrens’ Ward receives only €100 a year to spend on education and play resources and were overjoyed at the donation.

With some €850 available from the group’s Go Get Funding page it was decided to find out how best the Choir could help the hospital and Gemma ,the Education and Play coordinator for the ward, had previously suggested that rather than simply giving money to the hospital the group buy items needed by the ward and then provided a list of desired items.

THE walks, organised by the AECC, have the support of the Consell and are sponsored by OK Mobility and Eroski.

Seventeen towns, seven months, more than 9,000 participants in total - the first leg of the solidarity walks began.

The sweltering heat on April 14 did not dampen the spirits of the cohort of 300 people who had signed up for the first leg of the walk in Marratxi.

Promoted by the Consell de Mallorca and the Association Against Cancer of the Balearic Islands, all proceeds from the registration fee of €8 go towards cancer research and patients.

At the launch of the event, mayor of Marratxi, Jaume Llompart, expressed pride that the starting point was his home town. There was a festive atmosphere with a bouncy castle and other fun activities.

Costa Blanca North Maximum population

THIS month, Benidorm marked its historical maximum population, being the home of approximately 74,600 people.

The INE (National Institute of Statistics) revealed the significant increase, as Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez highlighted: “As a city, Benidorm is an engine for generating employment and an economic driver and progressively that potential is reflected in the number of inhabitants.

He called the growth in the population “stable and solid”, expanding from 66,000 inhabitants to more than 74,500 in just the past few years.

Usually recognised as the tourist centre, the mayor reflected on Benidorm’s transformation into a city which has become home to people from across the world:

“There is a growing interest not only in residing in Benidorm but in registering in the city.”

Costa Blanca South Dynamic duo

A HUGE congratulations is in order for Philip Trower and Michael Purdy, from Carmen’s Bar in Urb. El Chaparral, Torrevieja.

The dynamic duo took part in the Survivor Race on April 13 in support of charity.

Taking on the race in Alicante was no small feat.

Philip and Michael tackled the challenging 6km route and 20 obstacles with determination, completing it in an impressive hour and a half, almost to the minute!

Their mission was clear: to raise funds for two local organisations, the Helping Hand Food Bank in Torrevieja and the Torrevieja Animal Shelter.

Remarkably, Philip and Michael exceeded their initial fundraising goal of €1,000 in less than a week. Undeterred, they aimed even higher, setting their sights on €2,500.

In the end, their efforts paid off as they raised an astounding €2,677.90!

IN recent years, holiday rentals in La Manga del Mar Menor have witnessed an increase in demand, despite price increases ranging from 9 per cent to 12 per cent. La Manga real estate agents have stated, ‘Right now we’re at around 96 per cent, practically fully booked for July and August.’

Concerns over the state of the Mar Menor have prompted holidaymakers from areas like Los Alcazares to seek rentals in La Manga, offering access to both the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor in a less affected zone. The real estate agents added, ‘Many who used to rent in other Mar Menor areas have shifted to La Manga.’

The typical summer tourist profile remains largely national, especially from the Murcia region. Foreign tourism is more common post-summer, typically after September.

Skoda Enyaq Coupe - whisper quiet EV comfort

IF you’re in the market for an all-electric SUV then there’s a myriad of choice, however amongst the surfeit of choices one manufacturer that doesn’t crop up as often as it should is Skoda. The Czech company only produce one EV and it’s the Enyaq, with a full SUV or Coupe-SUV.

The range starts from £38,970 for the SUV and £46,440 for the Coupe-SUV, the latter being the focus of my attention. Standard fare across the line-up includes LED

With so many electric cars there’s an aversion to rear wipers, so few EVs have one. Why? There are no symbols on the instrument cluster for the lighting, just on the switch itself which is tucked away and hence not easy to view. The driver’s information screen is overly busy because it’s simply too small, so things aren’t that easily assimilated.

On the power front there are two outputs of 286PS and 346PS for the £54,820 vRS model, with four editions or trim levels. Range extends from 332 miles to 355 miles dependant on model. Performance, as you would expect from an EV, is all about acceleration

with the most relaxed 62 mph benchmark speed attained in 6.7 seconds, and the quickest just 5.5 seconds.

It’s a spacious car even in Coupe form with space aplenty for occupants and luggage, not to mention storage for infinite amounts of in-car detritus. There’s a premium ambience and it feels a little bit special when you’re inside the Enyaq.

There are also some nice detail touches such as the trademark Skoda umbrella in the driver’s door.

On the road the Enyaq is almost whisper quiet with little in the way of tyre and road noise and virtually nothing from wind noise. It handles extremely well for such a large machine and soaks up the very worst road surfaces you can find. It’s not perfect though!

Overall though the Enyaq is an EV star, it’s supremely comfortable, well equipped and has a half decent range. It’s a mystery as to why we don’t see more of them on the road, but the fact that it’s Skoda’s only EV at the moment perhaps accounts for it.

Overall though the Enyaq is a very complete EV, lots of space, lots of standard equipment, a decent potential range and a comfortable and relaxed drive.

Wrexham promoted

WE hear a great deal about billionaires from all over the world taking over Premier League football clubs and moving football away from the fans.

There was some trepidation at Wrexham AFC, the oldest professional football club in Wales when the celebrity pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney announced that they were to take over the club.

At that time, it was in a pretty parlous state, languishing in non-league football and owned by the Wrexham Supporters Trust and towards the end of 2020, the takeover was complete.

Now just four years later, Wrexham AFC (which is now known throughout the world of football thanks to the documentary series Welcome to Wrexham which is

about to enter its third season), has just won promotion from League Division 2 to League Division 1 and is having something of a fairy tale rise. The fan base has grown enormously, the stadium is being renovated, there’s a new pitch and shirt sponsors have included, TikTok, United Airlines and Vistaprint.

This isn’t the first time that a non-league team has found substantial backers as Salford City which now plays in League Division 2 is owned by six former Manchester United players, the Neville Brothers, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt.

They also had a TV documentary covering the takeover but haven’t managed to reach the universal audience that Wrexham have.

NEITHER the men’s nor women’s event at the Amstel Gold Race in The Netherlands ended as expected.

The one-day classic of 253 km with 30 climbs in Valkenburg was won by Olympic winner Tom Pidcock MBE, racing for the Ineos Grenadier team, who pipped favourite Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin–Deceuninck) at the post.
