Equality in San Roque INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day, on Friday March 8, will be celebrated in San Roque with numerous activities, programmed by the Women’s Information Centre (CIM), which is part of the Department of Equality and Social Affairs. Mayor, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, said this awareness-raising work must be focused with activities aimed at, “all ages and social strata: schoolchildren, young people, adults, the elderly, men and women.”

After presenting the agenda of events, the mayor added that San Roque “will continue to fight to achieve effective equality between women and men.” The

main event of the day is a performance by singer-songwriter María Ruiz together with a string and wind band and the day will conclude with the illumination of the building in purple.

Self-defence workshops have also been scheduled for March 19 and 20 and, on April 26, a ‘Women’s Get-together’ will be held in the Pinar del Rey pine grove, to which members of the various women’s associations in the municipality are invited. There will be awareness-raising activities and a meeting where they can exchange ideas and experiences.

Happy 85th Birthday Val As well as being one of the best-known faces on the Costa del Sol, Val Williams is a force of nature. Celebrating her 85th birthday on 21st February, Val, as is her way, is celebrating in style and raising money for good causes in the process.

ONLY Val could write an autobiography called ‘A Pickled Past’ which tells her story in a vivid and humorous manner, turning disasters into opportunities, and moving forward as if they had never happened.

Val became even better known along the Costa when Covid and all of its repercussions struck.

Concerned about the impact on businesses she launched with, the help of some other well-known faces, the Simply Surviving Group.

Val also recognised the dreadful situation many of the charities were in without the opportunity to raise funds, especially the animal charities. Then, of course there were the families that were struggling and Val raised thousands of euros in the first year to help groups like the ‘food fairies’, with many animal charities also benefiting from the lunches she organised, and in the process helping out the restaurants which hosted the events. Val has

also been supported by well-known entertainers on the coast.

Val is fearless, and, already in her 80’s, she undertook the Zip Line Challenge, of course, to raise more funds for

good causes.

Once life was returning to some kind of normal, and survival became less of an issue for many, Val decided that raising money for good causes shouldn’t stop and she changed the

name of the group to Simply Thriving and the show goes on.

Val spent Valentine’s Day with her good friend and designer, Brian Piccolo, who has made sure Val will shine on her birthday in a cerise dress with lace top and a chiffon skirt.

Everyone at the Euro Weekly News would like to wish Val the happiest of birthdays, and the energy to keep on going. So many local groups and people will join us in our congratulations for a woman who cannot be stopped, and is simply the best.

Happy Birthday, Val, from all your friends on the Costa del Sol and from everyone you have helped and supported over these difficult years. May you go from strength to strength.

Michael Carrington THE Culture Department of Alhaurin el Grande Town Council is hosting a series of concerts called the ‘Conciertos Mínimos’ (Minimal Concerts), one of the main cultural events to be held over the next few months in the town. It is a series of small-format concerts that will take place in La Baltasara and are aimed at anyone interested to enjoy this musical and sensory experience promoted by the podcast Tofeelmore.

These events come to Alhaurin el Grande thanks to Tofeelmore, a musical podcast created by Javier Muñoz, which for the last five years has been covering new musical creations and trends in the music scene, and which will take place in the incomparable setting of the gardens of the Casa Museo Antonio Gala.

The Antonio Gala House Museum consists of a main house and outbuildings, gardens and vegetable gardens that make up the estate of 30,000 square metres on the banks of the Fahala River.

The Minimal Concerts will begin on May 11 at 8pm with a performance by the masked German pianist Lambert, an international benchmark of the contemporary classical, ambient and alternative scene.

THE popular and acclaimed cooking workshops for adults, children and teenagers are back in Benahavis with a varied recipe book that will make participants lick their fingers and liven up the ‘Semana Blanca.

A total of six workshops for children and teenagers between six-12 years old and two workshops for adults over 18 years old, are being organised for residents of Benahavís at the well-known Escuela Hostelería in the town.

The workshops will be held on Saturday February 24 for adults and on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, February 26, 27 and 29 during Semana Blanca for children. There are two time slots each day: 9.30am to 11.30am and midday to 2pm.

AS OLIVIA’S, LA CALA, prepares for a new season, it welcomes a new team. Gareth (Gaz) Jones returns to Olivia’s as manager, and Paulo Ristori, originally from Venice, takes command of the kitchen with a culinary vision which will make Olivia’s stand out with its own unique style.

With two very demanding jobs, Gareth and Paolo have great plans to take Olivia’s forward by placing their own stamp on this stunning location. “We want to keep all of the great things which Olivia’s has become well-known for, “says Gareth, “but at the same time create new experiences for our clients.”

Paolo has worked in various parts of the world in his 25 years in the kitchen and explains, “I love traditional Mediterranean cuisine. It’s hard to beat, but I love the challenge of combining this with newer techniques.

The key to good food is sourcing high quality, local produce.” When pushed by EWN, Paolo admits that his signature dish reflects his roots; Risotto with black ink, and a little something special on the top.

Gareth explains that managing a busy venue has its own challenges.

“Everyone has to work together in harmony, but the client will always come first. My task is to find the highest quality staff to ensure that from the moment a client walks into Olivia’s their experience begins. Our aim is to please everyone and there is no compromise on this.”

Together, Gareth and Paolo want to create a new style which will be accompanied by a new menu. “We

want to create the same great experience Olivia’s has become renowned for, with an excellent dinner, live music, and we are adding our own signature cocktails this season,” explains Gareth.

Paolo also tells of the new Saturday Brunch afternoon which will be available very soon. “It will be a di-

fferent experience,” explains Paolo, “but we will make sure that no one leaves disappointed.”

The Sky Bar, located on the upper terrace will also open this year, especially for those who may like a special experience after dinner, or just stopping in for one of our cocktails.

“They can sit relaxed, away from

the busyness of the restaurant and watch the sun set from the beautiful setting of the Sky Bar. What can be better than relaxing with the fantastic Mediterranean views from the terrace?” asks Gareth.

Gareth has worked with owner Elliott Wright for over 15 years which shows the confidence placed in the new manager. Gareth admits that getting it all just right for the client will be his priority. “You have to have eagle eyes to make sure that nothing is overlooked: some heating on the chillier evenings, or a blanket, ensuring that orders are taken promptly and passed in an orderly manner to Paolo so that everything can be prepared with care and presented as a feast for the eyes, too,” says Gareth.

As from March 1, they will be open daily and there will be a host of special events planned and coming soon will be International Women’s day, Mother’s Day, and Easter weekend.

Paolo stresses that the Saturday afternoon Brunch is going to be a key daytime event and the set menu is going to be in great demand.

“These are exciting times,” says Gareth. “We won’t be taking anything away from the Olivia’s which has always been a popular venue, but it will be even better.”

MANY of us expatriates here in Spain come from different traditions, especially when it comes to religion.

You might have wondered what the significance is of the ritual of the Stations of the Cross. Also known as the way of the cross this is a Christian tradition commemorating the events of Good Friday. It represents the journey of Jesus Christ from his condemnation to his crucifixion and burial. The practice typically involves a series of 14 stations, each representing a significant event along this path. The stations are marked by images or statues and believers participate in devotional exercises. It’s traditional to walk from one station to the next while meditating on the biblical events. This devotional practice is especially Christian symbol of the cross. common during the season of Lent, particularly on Fridays and during Holy Week. The ritual serves as a way for Christians to reflect on the passion and suffering of Jesus Christ and is practised to gain a deeper understanding of Christian faith. It’s common in Spain for chapels and local churches to be built at the summit of a hill, and often the stations of the cross are placed at intervals on the way to the top.

This set the stage for a series of more than 50 stunning eggs, with 43 preserved to this day.

The most renowned egg dazzles with over 3,000 diamonds, reflecting Fabergé’s dedication to perfection.

Despite their rarity and value, Fabergé eggs are rarely sold.

In 2014, a forgotten egg surfaced in the cellar of a

country house, selling for a fraction of its true worth.

Initially mistaken for a mere golden egg, it was later revealed as a Fabergé masterpiece worth £20m which saved it from the fate of being melted down for its gold.

THE artist Dennis Manarchy is exhibiting his works of ‘metallic bodies’ in the ‘Elena Laverón’ hall of the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre in Torremolinos. A work made up of a selection of 36 images under the title ‘Metal’, which the photographer began more than a decade ago.

The exhibition ‘Metal’ can be visited until February 29 from Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 1.30pm and from 4.30pm to 8.30pm, and on Saturdays from 9.30am to 1.30pm.

In the works, Manarchy portrays models made up with silver spray paint and dresses them with gadgets from the private collection of fantastic objects of Steve Erenberg, known as ‘Radio Guy’.

Objects he has collected for decades and which are medical oddities and industrial artefacts, objects always seen from an artist’s point of view rather than their functionality.

The ‘Metal’ series is exhibited with large-format images produced by the sublimation technique, some on metallic textile and others on Chromaluxe aluminium plate, which maximises the metallic sensation of the images captured by the artist.

AGE CONCERN Fuengirola and Mijas (and now also Benalmadena) celebrated their second Gala Dinner in style at the stunning setting of The Green Label Restaurant. Whilst there is a heavy emphasis on the social activities of the organisation, it is much more than that. The Gala Dinner was to raise funds for their latest service development which is a ‘hospital to home’ programme. Michelle Greenwood, the secretary of the group explains that continuity of care and aftercare for people Photo: ARoali coming out of hospital is available, it is not always easy to access, or timely at the moment of need.

“Many elderly residents in Spain live on their own, and have very little in the way of family support locally.” What they plan to do is use the monies raised at these type of events to set up a service for people when they return after a hospital stay.

When possible, they will do an assessment prior to a planned hospital admission to prepare for the return home. They already have a mobility equipment loan service which can provide aids when needed, but this new development will work alongside professional care providers to visit people in their homes. Michelle added, “We are also working in collaboration with the Lion’s Club who help to deliver heavy equipment to difficult locations. It’s an exciting new project, and we have got off to a great start thanks to those who attended the Gala dinner, and the myriad of businesses who sponsored raffles and fantastic items for the auction.”
