CANAL Sur Television’s programme ‘Salud al día’ (Health of the Day) recorded a special episode titled ‘Primavera Azul en la costa de Nerja’ (Blue Spring on the Coast of Nerja). The focus of the episode is the colour blue, and it is scheduled to air on March 23.

The picturesque town of Nerja provided the perfect backdrop for discussions on blue trails, the nutritional benefits of blue fish, and a unique painting workshop by the ANEDA association. Members of ANEDA showcased their artistic skills, creating vibrant canvases with blue as the primary hue.

In addition to the main feature, two other segments were recorded. One is part of the ‘Paisajes’ (landscapes) section, and the second is titled ‘Nerja, Paraíso de Salud’ (Nerja, Health Paradise), which

Tram revival POSITIVE developments in Velez-Malaga suggest a revival of the tram service and progress on the A-7 motorway partial interchange project. Senator Víctor González met with Secretary of State José Antonio Santano in Madrid, expressing optimism for a potential extension of European funds to restart the local tram. The completion of the Caleta de Velez partial interchange on the A-7, a long-pending project, is also in focus.

González shared that the central government is now willing to extend the deadline for a subsidy to revive the tram and complete the A-7 project. Previously stalled due to disagreements with the local government, the senator urged collaboration for successful execution. Santano revealed the A-7 project is in the drafting phase with a budget of €4.3 million. The positive outcomes signal a renewed commitment from the Spanish government to address crucial infrastructure needs in Velez-Malaga.

Velez-Malaga’s transportation prospects brighten.

IN a stroke of luck for the residents of Velez-Malaga, the recent ONCE lottery draw scattered a portion of its fortune in the town. Cayetano López, an ONCE seller since 2019, sold 10 winning tickets, each fetching €35,000, totalling €350,000.

López, stationed at a supermarket on Avenida de las Naciones, expressed his happiness for the community, especially considering the agricultural challenges they face due to drought.

The draw also showered luck on Utrera, Sevilla, with €420,00 distributed among 12 winners, and Alcalá de Guadaíra, adding up to a total of €805,000 shared between Malaga and Sevilla provinces. The top prize of half a million euros of the ONCE draw, celebrating the Chinese New Year, was won in Guadalajara.

Operating under the slogan ‘For Good Coexistence,’ this initiative aligns with the Animal Rights and Welfare Law. Pet owners registered with the town council will receive complimentary waste bags and water dispensers, encouraging responsible ownership.

The campaign emphasises the importance of leashing pets and adhering to existing legislation. Local law enforcement will monitor compliance, with penalties imposed for violations.

New year, regardless of when we celebrate it, always represents a new start, new beginnings, new opportunities. I think it is a good thing that we can’t only do this once a year on the New Year that we celebrate. Personally, I am not a follower of astrology, or zodiacs, but I also guess I am not alone when I say that when there are good predictions for the future in my signs, I am notionally attracted to the idea. When they predict hard time ahead, my scepticism takes over.

The dragon is the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac, which makes it a bit magical, so when it says that the wood dragon will be a good year for culture and publishing, I grasp at the promise, being both a writer and working in publishing.

The origin of the expression “Here be dragons” goes back to the medieval map makers who would write ‘hic sunt dracones’ with an illustration on dangerous or unexplored territories.

They would also use sea monsters and other mythological creatures on uncharted areas where potential dangers were thought to exist.

So, why do I behave in such an irrational way about the possibility of good times ahead? It’s simple really. We all need to live in the hope that the future will be even better than the past.

As well as being the guardian of all our happy times, good experiences, and fond memories, the past also holds on to all our failures, bad experiences, and our mistakes.

Without the hope of a future where we do things better, use the learned wisdom of our past to avoid the same mistakes in the future, we are fated to the

same misery of our past human flaws mingling with our achievements in the future and diminishing them.

The story of Pandora’s box teaches us the lesson that while we are surrounded by all the evils in the world: sickness, suffering, and corruption, there is still hope for the future, and without that hope, without our dreams, what provides us with the strength and determination to go forward with positivity?

So, what opportunities does the year of the dragon present us with? Well, the number 9 is important as it represents feminine energy, and this will be a good year for women whom we will see coming to the fore on many areas.

According to the advice from the experts we should also attend more happy events to lure positive energy. I’m up for that. I’m a Dog in the Chinese zodiac, so of course I want to know what is in store for me. It could be a year of challenges, but that isn’t all negative as challenges also bring growth. As long as it’s not around my midriff, I’m up for that.

Whatever your take on this is, I wish you all happiness.

TWENTY-five Year 10 students from Almuñecar International School explored local tropical agriculture on a recent field trip.

Accompanied by their teachers, the farm owner, and Agriculture councillor Carlos Ferrón, the students received detailed insights into various crops’ characteristics and cultivation processes. Ferrón, an agronomist, highlighted key crops like avocado, custard apple, and mango, along with exotic varieties such as pitahaya and passion fruit.

Expressing gratitude for the students’ interest, Ferrón encouraged them to continue to study the subject. Notable points of interest for the students included custard apple pollination techniques, production yields, and economic considerations. The visit, integrated into Geography, Biology, and Spanish classes, will be followed by practical experiments in the school’s laboratory.

Ferrón emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting the local agricultural heritage for its economic significance on the Costa Tropical.

The road, which was essential for the Andalucian Cycling Tour’s first stage on February 14, underwent significant repairs after local authorities took charge of its maintenance due to severe deterioration.

With an investment of €48,334.26, the renovation project began on February 1.

Rodriguez expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress, emphasising its early completion.

He mentioned plans to assess drainage systems for improved rainwater evacuation in future phases.

The need arose due to the arrival of the Andalucian Cycling Tour, and the need to guarantee participant safety on the route.

Rodriguez praised the commitment of local technicians and applauded the contracted company for the timely completion of the project.

Axarquia faces water crunch.

Water restrictions Catherine McGeer RESIDENTS of Axarquia face stringent water conservation measures as the Drought Management Committee enforces a daily consumption limit of 160 litres per person. This decision, prompted by five consecutive years of below-average rainfall, particularly impacts the region’s water sources, such as the Guadalhorce-Limonero reservoir.

The restrictions extend to everyday activities, with a general ban on using potable water for street cleaning, filling private pools, garden and public park irrigation, golf course maintenance, and car washing outside authorised facilities. For perspec-

tive, filling an average-sized pool alone can consume several hundred litres, a 10-minute shower can use approximately 60 to 80 litres of water, modern, energy-efficient dishwashers use about 11 to 18 litres and washing machines anywhere between 50 to 100 litres.

These measures aim to mitigate the environmental and economic impacts of the prolonged drought. The Junta de Andalucia will closely monitor compliance, emphasising the need for residents to adapt to the new regulations. The situation underscores the importance of efficient water use and raises awareness about the region’s water scarcity challenges.

IN a bid to address depopulation in the rural areas of Axarquia and the Province of Malaga in general, the Provincial Government has launched a plan to provide new banking services to small inland towns, where population decline is concentrated. While Malaga is among the top four provinces with the highest population growth in Spain, the interior still faces challenges in reversing depopulation across 22 towns.

As part of this initiative, the Provincial Government has allocated €135,000 to install nine new ATMs in the Serrania de Ronda and

the interior of the Axarquia region in the first phase.

Towns such as Algatocín, Benalauría, Jimera de Líbar, Júzcar, Arenas, Canillas de Albaida, Cútar, and Macharaviaya will benefit from these new ATMs. Canillas de Albaida recently hosted an event introducing this phase, attended by the President of the Provincial Government, Francisco Salado, and other local officials.

IN a bid to familiarise students with the rich marine heritage along their coasts, an exhibition showcasing local marine species is set to tour schools in Almuñecar and La Herradura. Mayor Juanjo Ruiz Joya, along with

Sustainability and Environment councillors Carlos Ferrón and Lucía González, recently visited the exhibition installed at La Noria Primary and Infant Education School.

During the presentation

on coastal marine life, a class of young students, accompanied by their teachers and the school director, José Muelas, actively participated. Carlos Ferrón explained that the exhibition, owned by the town, aims to acquaint children with the different marine fauna nearby.

The Sustainability councillor emphasised the importance of ensuring that the younger generation recognises and appreciates the natural marine heritage along their shores.

Beachfront restaurant IN a recent announcement, councillor Nieves Atencia revealed that the Nerja Town Council has approved the construction licence for a beachfront restaurant in Calahonda, following the decision made in the latest Local Government meeting. With the projects approved, and all necessary reports obtained, the licence has been officially granted.

Atencia stated that construction will begin shortly, with the condition that it

will pause after May 31 to avoid disruption to the popular tourist area of Balcón de Europa. However, she added that if, after that date, any remaining work only affects the interior of the establishment, the work may proceed.

The councillor expressed excitement that the iconic Calahonda Beach will finally have a quality dining service and hopes for a swift completion of the project.

Grape escape THE Corazón Moscatel trail (Muscat Heart trail), launched by the towns Moclinejo, Almachar, and El Borge, has welcomed its first group of visitors to explore the Axarquia region.

This initiative aims to showcase the area’s charm, including white villages, stunning landscapes, exquisite wines, and a rich gastronomic scene centred around the Muscat grape.

The United Nations recognised it as an Important Agricultural Heritage System, the region boasts a unique cultural and historical significance.

The inaugural group, comprised of telecommuters from various Andalucian provinces, found the rural escape an opportunity to discover Axarquia’s cultural, environmental, gastronomic, and wine-related offerings.

The Corazón Moscatel trail, with its focus on Muscat grape cultivation, promises a multifaceted experience, blending vineyards, landscapes, harvest activities, wineries, gastronomy, tastings, culture, traditions, folklore, and local customs.

Drought relief AT last, the wait for rain is over in Axarquia, the area in Malaga hit hardest by drought. While the rainfall from Storm Karlotta may not solve the problem, it brings some relief to the parched fields.

Evidence of the rainfall can be seen in some rivers, such as the Turvilla River in Algarrobo, where water flows again, bringing relief to farmers and residents.

For over a year, the river hadn’t reached the sea (in Algarrobo Costa), and in

a couple of days, without continued rainfall, this section may dry up again. With many aware of this, people gathered at the mouth to capture the scene, and social media was flooded with images and videos of water flowing in this area. The welcome sight is a result of recent rains in the Sierra Tejeda and Almijara, where the river originates. Approximately 40 litres per square metre was collected in nearby areas.

112 Day ON February 13, the town of Torre del Mar hosted the celebrations for the European 112 Day, organised by the Junta de Andalucia. Jesús Pérez Atencia, deputy mayor of the town, expressed his heartfelt congratulations to 112 Andalucia for their outstanding work in ensuring the safety of everyone.

Atencia highlighted a special initiative aimed at the educational communities of Andalucia, the ‘Learn to Prevent Fires with 112’ campaign, engaging students from the province. Vuelta Andalucia 2024 Catherine McGeer THE highly anticipated cycling stage race Ruta del Sol-Vuelta a Andalucía (Route of the Sun-Tour of Andalucia) kicked off on February 14, tracing a thrilling route from Almuñecar in Axarquia to the final destination in La Línea de la Concepción, Cadiz finishing on February 18. With five challenging stages spread across the Andalucian region, this year’s cycling spectacle promises to be one of the most open competitions in recent memory.

Eurosport will be broadcasting the entire event on its channels, allowing fans worldwide to witness this compe-

titive cycling race. The journey covers 162.3 kilometres from the coastal town of Almuñecar to the heart of the Alpujarras in Cadiar. The first stage is a classic route with hilly terrain, which presents a constant challenge.

As cyclists tackle the demanding course, they’ll navigate the third-category climbs of Ítrabo and Lanjarón before confronting the challenging Puerto de Trevélez, positioned just over 50 kilometres from the finish line in the picturesque town of Cadiar. The race will weave through the stunning white villages of the Alpujarras, adding a scenic touch to the famous Ruta del Sol.

Water ships THE Andalucian Government announced that they plan to source additional water by bringing in ‘water ships’. Jorge Martín, President of the Public Water and Sanitation Company of Axarquía (Axaragua), has issued a statement clarifying that if the experts deem it necessary they will indeed explore this option.

According to the President of the Axarquía Costa del Sol Joint Authority, under which Axaragua operates, distribution would occur from the port of Malaga to areas with specific needs along the coast.

Martín stated, “Every action taken by the

government to combat drought has involved coordination with affected municipalities and joint authorities, as in our case.”

Other sources suggest the water would be brought in from Almeria but Martin went on to say they have had no confirmation about the origin of the water to be brought in by ship. He went on to discuss that under the Drought Decree, the Malaga Province was assigned 52 cubic hectometres of additional water. He also highlighted the ongoing projects to enhance the water infrastructure in an attempt to ensure a sustainable water supply for Axarquia.

Classic weekend Grace Meredith AROUND 60 vehicles from across Spain are set to rev their engines next weekend at the classic car event titled ‘fifth Clásica Villa de Comares.’ Organised by the town hall and the Escudería Doble 30 Association, it stands as the sole remaining classic car event in Andalucia. The route, spanning 16 towns, comprises two sections: a morning leg covering 90 kilometres and an afternoon stretch extending over 155 kilometres. Notably, this year’s course introduces El Borge, Rincon de la Victoria, and Colmenar via the scenic road through the Los Montes de Málaga Natural Park.

IN a significant development for Velez-Malaga, Mayor Jesús Lupiáñez has announced the commencement of the redevelopment of the SUP-B9 sector in Benajarafe.

This ambitious project aims to construct a total of 902 residences, including 88 designated for affordable housing, like council housing.

The first phase of redevelopment boasts an investment exceeding €2.5 million, covering an expansive area of 328,073 square metres.

Lupiáñez expressed enthusiasm, emphasising the commitment of the government to address the housing crisis and revive developer confidence, stagnant for almost

two decades.

He highlighted the importance of this venture in bolstering public housing and reigniting housing development stalled by economic downturns.

The redevelopment includes 328,073 square metres, with 85,231 square metres allocated for green spaces, which is 26 per cent of the total area.

Water quality THE Andalucian Government has announced the early completion of emergency works aimed at enhancing water quality in the La Viñuela reservoir, located in the province of Malaga. The project, originally scheduled for completion at the end of March, was finished a month ahead of schedule, with a budget exceeding €708,000.

This project was in response to the ongoing drought conditions and involved the installation of a floating water intake in the reservoir and the implementation of a pumping system to the intermediate intake tower. These measures will im-

prove water quality supplied to several towns, including Almachar, Benamargosa, El Borge, Comares, Cutar, Iznate, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Rincon de la Victoria, Velez-Malaga, Totalan, Algarrobo, Torrox, and Nerja.

Furthermore, the Andalucian Government acknowledged recent rainfall statistics in Huelva and Cadiz, with noteworthy rainfall in the Guadiaro River basin in Malaga. Grazalema, Cadiz, received an impressive 358 litres per square metre. Despite this Andalucian reservoirs currently hold 23.35 per cent of their total capacity.

A bite of the Apple SPAIN’S National High Court in Madrid suspended as a precautionary measure €194 million in fines imposed on Apple and Amazon in July 2023.

The National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) anti-trust watchdog concluded that a 2018 agreement between the companies had restricted competition on Amazon’s Spanish website.

Barratt deal BARRATT has bought its smaller housebuilding rival, Redrow, in a deal that topped £2.5 billion (€2.9 billion).

The two companies, which had a combined market value of £7.2 billion when markets closed on February 6, negotiated an all-share offer establishing Barratt as the UK’s largest housing constructor.

Barratt Redrow, the merged companies’ new name, will build 23,000 homes annually with a predicted £7 billion (€8.2 billion) turnover.

Both boards backed the transaction, as well as Steve Morgan, who founded Redrow 50 years ago with a £5,000 loan (€5,861) from his father and still holds 16 per cent of its shares.

Wind power ploy KRAFT HEINZ intends to build a £40 million (€46.9 million) green-powered hydrogen plant at its Kitt Green (Wigan) baked bean factory.

The parent company has now signed an agreement with energy firm Carlton Power to produce plans for the future installation.

The factory where a staff of 850 produce baked beans, soups and spaghetti hoops would produce hydrogen from renewable sources, principally wind and solar power. This should cover more than half of the factory’s annual natural gas needs while reducing its carbon emissions by roughly 16,000 tons a year.

Hotel tactics INDITEX founder Amancio Ortega has chosen Portugal’s second largest hotel chain, Vila Gale, to run one of the 18 hotels he owns there.

Hotel Mercure in Figueira da Foz, which Ortega acquired in 2004, was formerly managed by the Accor group and reopens following extensive renovations to its 102 rooms, two restaurants, bar, spa and other installations in April this year.

Vila Gale had a record turnover of €275 million in 2023 and its chairman Jorge Rebelo de Almeida, who is worth an estimated €1 billion, plans to enter the Spanish market with a 300-bedroomed hotel in Huelva in April.

Cheaper transfers ALL European banks must now offer their clients immediate transfers free of charge or at the same price as the ordinary procedure.

The European parliament approved the measure on February 4, with 599 votes in favour, seven against and 55 abstentions.

“Charging a different commission for immediate transfers is now banned,” explained Spanish Euro MP Jonas Fernandez who was part of the Economic Affairs and Monetary Committee which worked on the new legislation.

“This will make bank charges cheaper, because some banks in Spain take a commission on immediate transfers but will no longer be able to do so,” Fernandez told financial daily, Cinco Dias.

Airbus bait AIRBUS could expand its Albacete plant if a future subsidy from the Spanish government comes through.

Spain owns 4 per cent of Airbus and the government wants the company to increase its investment in the country, according to reports from Bloomberg.

The installation on the outskirts of Albacete city produces components destined for civilian and military helicopters and expanding the plant would fit in with government plans to attract more industrial and arms’ investment.

Google ban DANISH privacy regulator Datailsynet has ruled that local authorities in Denmark need stronger privacy assurances to continue to use Google services in their schools.

This decision stems from the fact that Google’s use of student data from Chromebooks and Google Workplace for Education was deemed a violation of European privacy laws as the data is used for ‘Google’s purposes.’

This year’s event attracted a total of 910 pupils in the walk along the route that departed from the town’s Health Centre and ended at the Las Palomas ravine.

For its part, the president of the Association Un Sí Por La Vida, Loli Badía, has highlighted the commitment of the entire social fabric of Alhaurin that has been involved, one more year, with this solidarity initiative and promotion of healthy habits in the fight against cancer.

IN a tradition that goes back 285 years, the Parish Church of Huercal-Overa celebrated the anniversary on February 8 of the transfer of the Eucharist to its current location.

In 1739, the new Parish Church in the centre of the town was consecrated and the Holy Sacrament was transferred from its original site to the new church.

The current celebration started with a Mass followed by parading the Eucharist from the old chapel to its current home.

The villagers carried candles and as the procession passed, lights were lit along the streets, recalling what as in the past there was no electricity and for this reason lights had to be lit along the streets.

Landmark victory THE Andalucian Rescue Centre for Horses (ARCH) recently celebrated a significant legal victory, shining a beacon of hope for animal welfare advocates.
