MANY residents and frequent visitors of Mojacar will know Debby from Wacky Barbers. She always has a smile for her customers, and loves a good chat in the chair!

This March, in 2024, Debby Courtnage will be taking part in the Barcelona Marathon, where she will be running the race in aid of the Paws Patas animal shelter, who as many are aware are currently in desperate need of funds.

Euro Weekly News spoke with Debby, who is originally from St Albans in the UK and moved to the sunny shores of Mojacar 18 years ago.

Blown away!

MOST of Almeria saw an orange alert due to the wind gusts that flew in at a whopping 100 kilometres per hour.

The State Meteorological Service (Aemet) issued these weather alerts in Nacimiento, Campo de Tabernas, Mojacar and along the coast of the capital and the west of Almeria.

International tourism MOJACAR will be at the FITUR International Tourism Fair, which will be held in Madrid between the days of January 24 and 28.

The Mojacar Delegation will be headed by the Mayor, Francisco García Cerda, who will be accom-

panied by the Tourism councillor Maria Gracia Alarcon, as well as experts from the Municipal Tourism Office.

Regarding the new Mojacar 2024 tourism campaign, the promotion of sports tourism as a line of work in the fight against

seasonality stands out. It will focus on sports tourism, which combines the practice of a physical activity in an environment that one intends to visit and discover. This kind of tourism is currently on the rise within the sports and travel sector.

SUNDAY’S ‘winter beaches’ activities in Vera continued despite the weather, which did not stop its beaches from being filled with fun and vitality. From exciting roller hockey games to the contagious rhythm of Zumba, brilliant beach volleyball matches and challenging Pilates sessions.

MAZ’S Canine would like to thank Susan Kaur, David and her friends for a lovely evening of Indian food that was cooked to perfection.

THE country music group La Chirigota del Soto performed their much loved ‘El Planeta de los Litios’ in Albox. It was the epicentre of the street carnival which took place on Sunday, January 21.

FRANCISCO JOSE MORALES VERDEJO, originally from Almeria, is now a well respected captain in Balearia, and states that he carries the Almeria flag with him on all vessels.

After leading crews of over 1,000 seamen for nearly three years, he finally docked for the first time in the Port of Almeria on January 10, which was also the debut of the Almeria native, in the port of his homeland as captain.

He has spent almost a decade working away from home, but he always carries his flag of

Magic of history THE town of Cuevas del Almanzora presents ‘The magic of history’ and the Desert Springs Resort complex at FITUR 2024 On Thursday, January 25 at 11.30am the new promotional video ‘The magic of history’ will be shown to Spain for the first time.

Cuevas del Almanzora will arrive at the Madrid International Tourism Fair ‘FITUR 2024’ on January 24 and stay until January 28, showing attendees their unique presentations.

The presentation of the promotional video ‘The Magic of History’ will take place on the second day of the fair, and will show a very special tour of the cultural and museum offerings of Cuevas del Almanzora, guided by the ‘rider’ of the prison graffiti of the Torre del Homenaje as a symbol of Cueva culture and historical heritage.

In addition, the offer and news of the Desert Springs tourist and golf complex, the only desert course in Europe, which offers much more sports, will be presented.

New ambassador IGNACIO MARTIN LERMA, the renowned archaeologist and scientific disseminator from the town of Vera will now be its ambassador for the new tourism promotion campaign.

On Wednesday, January 24, Vera presented its new promotion campaign, which will be led by none other than homegrown hero, Ignacio Martín Lerma, who will be used as the main image of the project.

The mayor of the town, Alfonso Garcia, stated that: “for us, Ignacio is the ideal prescriber to promote all

THE construction of a new hotel and residential complex in Cabo de Gata has received the environmental ‘OK’.

Work will now rapidly proceed for the building of a small hotel and around 50 residential homes in Cabo de Gata after the project received the appropriate instruction from the Ministry of Sustainability, Medio Environment and Blue Economy of the Junta de Andalucía, as well as the Office of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park.

Is democracy dead?

VIEWPOINT BILL ANDERSON I’M not saying it is, but just asking the question. Winston Churchill had a lot to say about the democratic process in a world which was very different from the world we inhabit today. “A five-minute conversation with the average voter would make you question the very principle of democracy,” he said. A harsh statement if there ever was one. The Greek roots of the word indicate ‘the rule or power of the people’. Again, I ask the question, ‘Do the ‘people’ feel in charge of the country they live in?’ I think not.

There is no single system of democratic process. In the UK they still use a ‘first past the post’ election system which does allow voters to select the

person they want to represent them and allows individuals to stand independently. Many in the UK have advocated for proportional representation which they claim will be fairer and more representative of the will of the people.

However, even proportional representation is not a unified concept and there are many forms of the beast.

The starting question is, how do we ensure that the best people are put into the political jobs which best match their skillset? Frankly we don’t. Having survived six years in the Spanish political world, I am very clear that the lists presented have little or nothing to do with what candidates have to offer, and everything to do with how many votes

those in charge feel that candidates can draw from their own community. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that there are no skilled people on these lists or holding positions of responsibility that they are completely capable of doing.

There are some very good people, but you didn’t get the opportunity to decide who went on that list. It’s like going into a restaurant and being told what they are going to serve you: like it or lump it.

In a perfect world, people presenting for office should have altruistic motives, but how many hairdressers or plumbers do you know that can command the salary levels of a politician? Once they are in, they want to stay there. No one

wants to see their lifestyle deteriorate.

The next question I ask is ‘Who actually runs the country?’: the people we elect, or the unelected, shadowy bodies that pull the strings? The European Commission, the World Economic Forum, The World Health Organisation.

Unelected and non-removeable. The more influence and power they have, the further we drift from the democratic process. To what extent are these unelected overlords dictating and determining what our future will look like? We can only guess and speculate.

Giving Churchill the last word, “Democracy is the worst form of government - except for all the others we have tried.” Like it or lump it.

Almeria will appear in the second season of ‘Pipper en Ruta’, the TVE 2 programme whose star is Pipper, the popular ‘influencer’ dog that has toured many parts of Spain.

Diabetes assistance GARRUCHA now has a retinograph. The device has been installed by the Northern Health Management Area of Almeria in the local Health Centre to provide assistance to users with diabetes. The instalment is part of the Andalucian Diabetic Retinopathy Early Detection Programme, which will provide assistance to users with diabetes in the Almeria towns of Garrucha, Mojacar and Turre. During 2023, around 2,000 tests were carried out in the Northern Health Management Area of Almeria to screen for Diabetic Retinopathy. Early detection is paramount. During the examination of the patient three photographs are obtained of each fundus of the eye and the screening doctor then interprets the results. Any images considered pathological or doubtful are transferred to the reference ophthalmologist.

One of the places this popular pup saw was the much loved wild west inspired Oasys MiniHollywood park, as well as the Tabernas desert and various places in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, including Cortijo del Fraile, La Isleta del Moro and the Cabo de Gata lighthouse.

Local Police hero

THE Local Police have saved the life of an elderly man that was in a serious condition but locked in his home in Tabernas.

Reports have emerged that on the afternoon of Sunday, January 21, the Tabernas Local Police saved the life of an elderly man who was unable to leave his house.

They received a phone call from the man’s sister who was worried about the situation as she had not seen him for two days.

Police checked to see if neighbours had seen him recently but did not find anyone who had seen him since early Saturday morning.

Authorities then knocked on the door of the house and called the neighbour by name repeatedly, but did not receive any response.

Since the door of the house was quite old, and with the consent of the family members they forced it open.

Inside was the owner in a very serious state of health.

Ambulances were called and quickly arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance.

According to the information provided by the family, the man is now progressing favourably after his admission to the Torrecardenas University Hospital.

MANY towns in Almeria have been subjected to ever changing weather during these first weeks of 2024, and Mojacar is no different.

Although it may be an inconvenience to those ‘BBQ on the patio’ plans, and one can find themselves rushing home to change as they are either suddenly soaked by rain or sweat, this temperamental weather left residents of Mojacar with a beautiful and colourful sight recently.

On Friday, January 19, local resident Ann Sykes took to social media to share the beautiful ‘double rainbow’ that suddenly appeared in the Mojacar skies, just as shine was about to turn to rain.

Many others commented that they had seen it too, and it proves that although the rain did come, in every cloud there can also be a pretty colourful lining!

Pets blessed

COLOURFUL: The beautiful occurrence.

A safer Huercal-Overa ACCORDING to the data presented at the Security Board, and thanks to the commitment of its residents and security forces, Huercal-Overa is considered one of the safest places in the Almeria region.

Now, in an effort to see this safety and well being of the people continues, the council of Huercal-Overa has increased the budget amount that is allocated to security for the current year, 2024.

Nearly €1.8 million is now allocated to the local administration for the protection of its residents.

The councillor for Citizen Security, Jose Manuel Viseras, stated that this decision, “aligns with the vision of maintaining and strengthening Huer-

cal-Overa’s position as one of the safest municipalities in the province.

Among the main areas of focus are video surveillance and the improvement of telecommunications equipment, essential elements to optimise the work of the security forces, especially the Local Police.”

The mayor, Domingo Fernandez, expressed his deep gratitude to the security forces for their dedication and hard work by stating: “The joint effort of the Police, together with the rest of the Security forces has led to turning Huercal-Overa into a safe place to live and work. This increase in the budget reflects our continuous commitment to the safety of all the inhabitants of our town.”

BEM for David Brown DAVID BROWN, co founder and president of MACS cancer support group has been honoured with the prestigious British Empire Medal.

Now, the mayor of Mojacar, the town where David resides and carries out his incredibly important work has addressed this local hero to offer his sincere congratulations.

The mayor, Francisco Garcia Cerda, stated that: “I have welcomed the news of the award to David Brown, co-founder and president of MACS, for the services he provides to people with cancer in Spain.

“I would like to extend my congratulations and congratulate all the volunteers for this excellent cancer charity that helps those suffering from this terrible disease. A well-deserved

distinction that we all applaud.

“Fifteen years ago, MACS started on this path that, with a lot of work and great dedication, has managed to serve numerous residents of the region in the multiple needs that arise with the onset and progression of this disease.

“I cannot help but remember Elaine Brown, co-founder of this adventure with her husband David. She is not with us today, but she remains in our memory. Her dream, drive and decision to move MACS forward are carried on by each and every one of the volunteers who continue the fight.”

THE beloved pets in Vera were blessed on Sunday, January 21 in recognition of San Antón’s Day. San Anton is one of the most revered patron saints among devotees and, furthermore, among those who love pets. Every year, hundreds of people share this event with their pets, who are blessed as tradition states.

This day is extremely popular among the people of Veracruz, who always celebrate San Anton in style with a rich programme of activities during the day.

The participating pets were lined up and happily participated in the procession through the streets of the town. Following this, the Holy Mass saw the animals be blessed by the Reverend Jesus Martin Gomez. Immediately afterwards, the animals travelled up to the Hermitage of San Anton, where traditional food and prayers took place.

Berlin artist’s exhibit

AN art exhibition is now open in Mojacar at the La Fuente Municipal Art Centre, which displays some incredible works by Berlin born, Mojacar resident Rolf Gerhard Langue.

The exhibition will be open until January 31 and is an indication of his development and evolution as an artist, highlighting the different stages of the painter over the years.

Rolf was born in the German city of Berlin and has lived in Mojacar since May 2022, creating all his work within the magic of this Andalucian town since then.

The artist has adored drawing since he was a small child, and even disclosed that his first childhood memories are always of painting.

with a watercolour that was painted in 1954 and ends with his latest works in acrylic. Going around, the viewer can find studies and practices in all the pictorial techniques employed by the author, but which are also a reflection of the evolution of art, of the artistic

styles of painting, and in short of society itself over the last 50 years.

Culture councillor Noemi Linares attended the opening, as well as many members of the public who did not want to miss this interesting exhibition where the life’s work of the artist is on display.

The Red Cross helps CHARITY organisation, the Red Cross, has increased efforts to help the homeless people in Almeria.

The Red Cross have stated that they estimate a 20 per cent increase in homeless people after Covid-19 in Almeria.

Fatima Cayo, who is in charge of the Red Cross Homeless Programme in Almeria, has explained that there has been a “significant increase in demand for services,” which are offered through day centres and on night outings and involve warm clothing and hot food being offered to people who are on the street.

in the capital and in the towns of Adra, Roquetas de Mar and Vera. Due to this sudden rise, the charity has stated that they are offering longer hours of opening, as well as placing more of their volunteers in this sector.

Since the beginning of last year, through the Andalucian Government, a housing plan for homeless people has been in place, where people can stay at a centre in return for actively searching for work, which in turn helps them get out of the situation permanently. This action has already given rise to ‘success stories’ in which some people have been able to get a job or live independently.

Lorry on fire

A CLEANING lorry in El Ejido suddenly caught fire on Saturday, January 20, in front of the City Hall façade.

The residents of El Ejido woke up startled at the weekend, as a lorry belonging to the town’s municipal cleaning services dramatically exploded into flames right next to the façade of the El Ejido Town Hall, on Calle Cervantes.

According to sources from the Poniente Firefighters, who were put in charge of putting out the fire after the cleaning staff’s efforts proved fruitless, the incident could

have been caused by a problem in the pressure motors that carry out the flushing, which in turn created small explosions which made the machinery begin to burn.

Thankfully, no injuries were caused due to this incident, only damage to the façade of the town hall as well as another vehicle that was parked close to the cleaning vehicle.

Traffic on Calle Cervantes was completely cut off in order to quell the flames and allow the swift removal of the burned vehicles.

Trail La Polvora Organ donations in Almeria

SIGN OF IDENTITY: Last year’s race which takes place in Cantoria.

CANTORIA is currently preparing for the celebration of the fifth edition of the Trail La Polvora that will take place on Sunday, January 28.

Every resident of this town in Almeria, no matter what age or physical ability is invited to take part in the race that has now become a ‘sign of identity’ for its people.

There will be more than 150 participants in this year’s race, which will take place in the heart of the Almanzo-

ra Valley region with some stunning and impressive views. It will be divided into different categories, two running races and one of hiking.

The running races will prove two options, extremely difficult and moderately difficult.

One of the objectives of this unique race is to encourage all types of runners and walkers to sign up, no matter their level of ability. It is an event that unites the town and its people, in a day of

healthy activity and fun.

The La Polvora Trail not only welcomes people from the province, but many come from other points such as Granada, Murcia, Malaga or Cadiz.

During the route, many refreshment points will be available with soft drinks, isotonic drinks or chocolate bars. At the finish line there will be hot broth waiting as well as typical sweets from the town.

DURING the year of 2023, Almeria hospitals registered 52 organ and tissue donations.

The province of Almeria has registered that there were a total of 52 organ and tissue donors during the past year, of these, 28 have been organ donations and 24 tissue donations.

The 12 months of 2023 now represent the highest donor rate in history in Andalucia, with 51.5 donors per million population, 5.3 per cent more than the previous year.

In total, the planning and acceptance of donations by those who have passed and their REGIONAL minister, Loles Lopez, has opened Mojacar’s first residence for the elderly.

The Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality regional minister, Loles Lopez, has opened the Jardín de Mojacar residence for the elderly, the first of its kind in the region of Almeria.

Accompanied by the local mayor of Mojacar, Francisco Garcia, they visited the new residential home. She stated: “The Jardín de Mojacar

families in Andalucia is close to 85 per cent.

This solidarity has resulted in a total of 441 organ donations and 281 tissue donations, which represents 722 donors in total, during 2023, which is the highest number in the entire historical series.

The Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs wants, therefore, to thank the solidarity of the donors and the work of the professionals who make up the organ and tissue transplant teams in our region, as well as the Transplant Coordination Network of Andalucia.

Elderly residence residence shares with the regional ministry the backing for a care model centred on the person, and as its motto goes, ‘Warmth plus care equals quality’.” Lopez then congratulated the local council for making this centre a reality.

She added that: “For our government team, our elderly are one of the most important priorities and for whom we always

work to obtain the best facilities and the best services.”

Last November, in 2023, the Regional Ministry for Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality gave accreditation for 60 places, subsidising the first eight. This centre, which is completely new, has individual and shared rooms and features which include a therapy garden.

ON the morning of Friday, January 19, Almeria worker unions UGT and CCOO gathered at the doors of the Union Building.

The meeting was due to a worker, a girl, aged 21, who had died in an accident whilst travelling to work.

The fatal incident occurred just a few days prior to this on the highway that connects Lorca (Murcia) and Pulpi (Almeria).

A lorry that was transporting plastic overturned on a bus and resulted in the death of the young woman and left 13 more injured who were returning after finishing their working day in a fruit and vegetable company in

UNIONS: Demand for safer travel.

The unions are demanding a more safer way of transport, as already

three deaths have been recorded in Andalucia during the working hours in 2024.

Both forces are urging that 96 per cent of the transportation of goods in Spain is carried out by road, while the remaining 4 per cent is sent by rail, although the latter is known to be much safer.

The unions are demanding immediate action to change these policies and transports.

Foreign contributions FOR the first time in its history, the region of Almeria now has more than 80,000 foreign workers contributing to its economy.

Social Security records from January 2024 have shown that 80,003 registered foreign affiliates are now working in Almeria, the highest level of contributors of foreign origin in its history.

Throughout the last decades, workers from other countries, mainly from North Africa, have been assisting in the intensive agriculture in Almeria that has helped to turn the most desert province on the continent into the largest exporter of fruits and vegetables.

Today they continue to be essential for the countryside, but also for the socioeconomic development of Almeria.

The history of the site goes back over 100 years, and was built between 1902 and 1904 by the company ‘The Alquife Mines and Railway Company Limited’.

Its purpose was to assist in abandoning rudimentary systems for loading ore from the iron mines of Alquife (Granada). and alleviate extra costs in maritime export through the port of Almeria In 1998, the government of Andalucia declared it a Site of Cultural Interest, with the category of monument, for its technical and historical value. After various phases of restoration, the Port Authority of Almeria recovered the pier as a pedestrian promenade, and it now stands as a spectacular viewpoint over the Mediterranean Sea.

THIS is the tale of The Palace of Chavarri, once a place of wonder and grandeur, that now stands as a memory to another time.

The Palace of Chavarri, as it was grandly known, is currently being used as the entrance to a modern style hotel named Hotel Alegria Palacioin in Marina de la Torre, Mojacar. It is run by the Fergus Hotel group and is known as a budget friendly, all inclusive hotel.

However, this was not always the case, as the palace was once only accessed by the most exclusive of guests, and for

many years was a summer home, owned by an extremely wealthy Ma-

drid family called Garri-

gues-Walker.

The father of the family was named Antonio and worked as the Spanish ambassador to the United States, later moving to a posting at the ambassador’s residence at the Vatican.

His wife, Helen, was from Des Moines in Iowa.

The couple had nine children, and one of them, Joaquin, was a regular visitor to Mojacar even into adulthood. He even spent his honeymoon with his wife Mercedes there in 1956.

The house was built by the first Marquis de Chavarri who owned a shipping line. It is alleged that his captains were instructed to fire off a cannon salute from their ships as they navigated past the estate on the way to or from the port of Garrucha. As Mojacar was so far away from the cities and quite hard to access by land, many used to come by sea.

MANY locals are worried about the ‘invasion’ of motorhomes on the beaches of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar natural park in Almeria.

It is becoming increasingly common to find large groups of these mobile homes gathered in beautiful, scenic spots along the coast, however, many are becoming annoyed as they occupy parking lots, roads and unenabled public spaces. Local resident, Julie Naylor stated that: “I have no problem with motorhome people in general... but they are parking up in large numbers, 20 plus vans, and no other cars can park.”

Another local from the area added that: “they don’t mind spending money to buy the vans but won’t spend a few euros to stay on a campsite!

Out of control.”

In these winter days, the campsites in Almeria hardly have any customers, not even reaching 20 per cent of their capacity.

However, many have argued that they should be left alone. “Live and let live. They’re not hurting anyone. 99.9 per cent of motorhomers will spend money locally and are responsible people when it comes to emptying waste and also they don’t spoil anyone’s view at all” stated an empathetic resident on social media, with many others agreeing by liking her comment.

As by Spanish law, motorhomes can park anywhere where vehicle parking is permitted, as long as traffic regulations are complied with and there is no other prohibition regarding the size of the vehicle.

Three vehicle collision A TRAFFIC accident occurred on Monday, January 22 and resulted in a multiple collision between three vehicles at kilometre 791 of the A-7 in Almeria.

Although the scene looked extremely dramatic, luckily nobody was seriously injured, although a woman is said to have sustained minor injuries in the form of a ‘blow to the chest’. Reports have stated that she was treated at a medical centre and is now recovering at home.

The incident caused nine kilometres of traffic jams in the direction of the capital.

A spokesperson for the 112 Andalucia emergency service stated that the accident took place at 7.40am in the morning near La Garrofa, towards Murcia, due to a rear-end collision between the vehicles.

Caught in the act A MAN who tried to flee from the police with almost 20 kilos of marihuana in the boot of his car has been caught and will pay for his crimes.

The man, aged 35, reportedly tried to flee from the Guardia Civil at ‘high speed’ on the A-7 highway as it passes through Huercal-Overa towards Murcia at 3.30am on January 10.

A patrol car that was carrying out citizen security services observed the vehicle at the moment it began a ‘dangerous overtaking and driving at high speed’.

They identified the licence plate and began following it at a certain distance, with light and acoustic signals aimed at getting the driver to stop.

However, the authorities have reported that the man “ignored” the instructions and then “increased the speed,

occupying both lanes of the road.” The runaway car then exited the A-7 highway at point 664, where the police of Huercal-Overa and Zurgena managed to intercept it.

The driver tried to get out of the vehicle, “disobeying the officers’ orders at all times and resisting with a high degree of aggressiveness towards them.”

After his arrest, the authorities inspected the

vehicle, and found nearly 20 kilos of large-calibre marihuana buds in the boot, “optimal for consumption.”

The dangerous driver is accused of crimes against public health, reckless driving, resistance, disobedience and attack against law enforcement officials. He was later brought to justice by a judge from Huercal-Overa who ordered his imprisonment.

Historical site abandons renovations THE Civil War shelters and tunnels in Almeria were part of an exciting project last year that looked to improve and renovate them for visitors and tourists.

The site received 42,000 visitors last year, and is considered a popular tourist attraction. Unfortunately, at a recent Local Government Board it was realised that no company had come forward with a desire to make the upgrades become a reality and therefore the plans have been abandoned.

It is a blow to the region as the plans contained exciting possibilities through the incorporation of new resources such

as audio guides and sign guides, in addition to a technological virtual reality experience of what the tunnels would have looked like in their day.

The tender was launched by the city council last November with a maximum budget of €93,536.60, which also included improvements to the infrastructure itself, an amount that has not attracted offers and which represents the slowdown of the city’s plans.

The site was built from the beginning of 1937 until the end of the Civil War, in 1939. It began to attract visitors from early 2006, after its partial renovation in 2004.

Rising temperatures AS of Thursday, January 25, temperatures in Spain are expected to rapidly rise, with Almeria seeing up to 28ºC in some areas!

After the last week of wind, rain and storms, a radical change is now expected for this week, as a powerful anticyclone and a ridge will be located over Spain, causing the country to see spring temperatures in the middle of January!

It may even be wise to fish out those summer clothes that have been set aside for storage, as not only will the skies be blue, but the sun will blaze down at a heat that may encourage some to have a beach day in the middle of winter!

According to AEMET, many areas of Almeria will see an average of 20ºC, however specific points will reach no less than 28ºC, which is between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius above what is usual at this time of year.

The long-term forecast indicates that this abnormal heat could even last until the first weeks of February.

Fireball captured THE Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, located in the Sierra de Los Filabres, captured an image of an incredible fireball that flew through the night sky.

The impressive cometary fireball illuminated the skies on the night of January 21, with a direction that was heading towards the southern coasts.

This phenomenon was captured by the Smart Project detectors, which are deployed in strategic observatories such as Calar Alto (Almeria), La Hita (Toledo), Huelva, Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Sevilla and Aljarafe (Sevilla).

Professor José María Madiedo, principal investigator of the Smart Project at the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalucia (IAA-CSIC), confirmed that this phenomenal fireball was the result of a meteor impacting our atmosphere at an incredible speed of 89,000 kilometres per hour.

Road safety measures Unnamed airport

THE Junta de Andalucia have introduced a new intersection in a bid to reduce the accident rate on the A-370 in Mojacar.

The project has seen an investment of nearly €3 million, and was opened on Tuesday, January 23 by the Regional Development Minister, Rocio Diaz.

The new intersection will aim to reduce the risk of accidents at the crossing of the main lorry traffic route to Garrucha Port (A-370) and the Mojacar coastal bypass (A-1203).

Rocio Diaz explained that: “The Andalucian Government has acted on a critical point in the Almeria Province’s road network, which led to a high accident rate, with the new intersection which provides more guarantees of road safety to the 13,000 drivers who go through this intersection daily.”

MANY residents of Almeria continue to ask an important question. Why does the region’s airport still not have a name?

People all around Almeria celebrated almost four years ago when the airport, which was inaugurated in 1968, was said to be named after the guitar player Antonio de Torres.

However, since that was agreed and announ-

ced, having been approved by the Provincial Council and the Junta of Andalucia, no further action has been taken, and the airport continues to be nameless to this day.

According to reports, Aena has not received a mandate from the Ministry of Transport to incorporate the new name to the rental terminal.

This may be a result of the council not proces-

sing the plenary agreement, or perhaps it did but it has somehow been lost by the Ministry of Transportation and so it has not been sent through.

Whatever the reason, the fact stands that in 2024 the Almeria airport still has no official title, and the previously agreed name of Antonio de Torres does not shine yet on its façade.

The Guardia Civil and the National Police have arrested 12 people who belonged to a ‘very active criminal group’ dedicated to theft inside homes in rural areas of six different provinces: Almeria, Albacete, Alicante, Ciudad Real, Murcia and Valencia.

In August 2023, the province of Alme-

ria and its surrounding areas experienced a ‘significant increase in robberies committed inside homes located in remote areas’.

The total amount stolen, which includes vehicles and jewellery, amounts to around €400,000.

The Command and Headquarters of the Investigative Court reported in a statement that eight of these, including the main perpetrators will be immediately imprisoned as of January 2024.

Canaries’ flight diverted A RECENT incident on a flight from the UK to the Canary Islands has raised the question, is air travel becoming more unpredictable?

On Friday, January 19, a Ryanair journey from the UK to the Canary Islands, chaos erupted mid-air. The flight, originally set to land in Lanzarote, had to make an unscheduled stop in Portugal due to a violent altercation which involved seven passengers.

The mid-air skirmish led to the plane’s diversion to Faro Airport, which landed at approximately 10.50am local time.

Portuguese police confirmed the involvement of seven individuals in the fight, which led to one person being arrested. Although there has been no official statement, all those involved in the altercation are said to be British nationals.

RYANAIR FLIGHT: Chaos erupted mid-air.

The aircraft, operated

by Ireland’s low-cost airline Ryanair, had departed from London Luton Airport at 8.00am. It was due to arrive in Lanzarote by 12.15pm but was forced to change course.

This incident is the latest in a series of diversions for Ryanair. On December 20, a Boeing 737 headed from London Stansted to Lisbon had to land in Faro due to technical difficulties. The situation was so severe that a ‘red code’ alert was issued, summoning

35 emergency vehicles and nearly 80 responders.

Even earlier, a flight from London Stansted to Morocco on December 5 had to make an emergency landing in Faro after the pilot fell ill.

A Ryanair spokesperson commented on the December 5 incident: “The aircraft landed normally, and passengers were transferred to an alternative aircraft operated by another crew before continuing to Morocco.”

Phone ban in Dutch schools A RECENT initiative by the government in the Netherlands to ban iPhones and all other mobile telephones seems to be working out well.

Many of the schools involved have indicated that their initial experiences are positive, reporting that students are talking to each other again, and are calmer and more focused.

Frank Engelen, who is the Headmaster of Niftarlake College in Maarssen, Utrecht, said things are going well at his school, explaining that “they are coming into contact with each other more often, even with students who they do not know.”

The new rules, which came into many secondary schools at the beginning of 2024, mean that students must either leave the phone at home or lock them up once school starts.

One teacher beamed on the schools website that: “students are bringing

playing cards for the break, and a Discman was even seen for listening to music.”

In 2023 in the Netherlands a study showed that many secondary school students did not dare to express themselves freely at school because they were afraid of being filmed or photographed by classmates. “School should be a safe place,” said Engelen.

So, teenagers are actually talking to each other again, and perhaps learning much more about themselves and the real world as they do so.

Art theft VITTORIO SGARBI, Italian Minister for Culture, and friend and art advisor to Silvio Berlusconi, has been accused of stealing a valuable painting.

The scandal focuses on a 17th century painting by Rutilio Manetti, from Siena. The work is ‘The Capture of St. Peter’, which until 2013 was on display at the Buriasco Castle in Piedmont. The owner of the castle and the painting, Margherita Buzio, reported the theft of the work in February 2013, but investigations hit a brick wall.

Then in 2021 the painting reappeared in an exhibition inaugurated by Sgarbi himself, which allegedly contained an ‘unpublished’ painting by Manetti. A work almost identical to the stolen one except for a few small details including the addition of a candle to the background.

Sgarbi denies that it is the same painting and explained that it is just a coincidence, as the painting was allegedly found in a villa that Sgarbi’s mother had bought years earlier.

But Il Fatto Quotidiano newspaper also identified a restorer to whom Sgarbi is said to have sent the painting.

Only in the photos shown by the restorer, the candle is not there.

Sgarbi continues to say that they are two different works, and indeed that the original one is his and the other a copy.

However, the Carabinieri of the Heritage Protection Unit searched three of Vittorio Sgarbi’s homes and managed to seize Rutilio Manetti’s original ‘The Capture of St. Peter’.

Linda Hall ITALY’S parliament has passed a law imposing fines of up to €60,000 for damaging or defacing the country’s monuments and art treasures.

New legislation was promised in April 2023 after environmental activists, most of them from Italy’s Ultima Generazione group, carried out a series of protests directed at famous buildings and works of art, causing damage that required expensive and extensive repairs.

The move coincided with a January 17 court case, which

charged three Ultima Generazione activists with spraying orange paint over the plinth of Maurizio Cattelan’s L.O.V.E sculpture in Milan in January 2023.

In their defence, Cattelan wrote to the defendants’ lawyers, saying that the stunt had not damaged his sculpture of a hand, which is commonly known as The Finger owing to its raised middle finger. Neither did he feel “offended or harmed,” he insisted.

The following April, the same activists occupied the

Trevi fountain in Rome, after pouring black liquid into its water to symbolise oil.

In December 2023, activists from another group, Extinction Rebellion, added green dye to canals in Venice to draw attention to what they claimed was lack of progress at the Cop-28 climate talks in Dubai.

Although Italy’s new law is aimed principally at environmental activists, media reports have suggested this could also apply to tourists who damage historic sites and monuments.

National Police honoured TO honour the bicentennial of the National Police, Correos, the Spanish post office has issued a commemorative stamp. The launch event took place on Thursday, January 18, at the Canillas Police Complex in Madrid, with key figures such as Francisco Pardo Piqueras, the general director of the Police, and Pedro Saura Garcia, the president of the Post Office, in atten-

dance. This new stamp is now available for purchase at Post Office locations and through Correos Market.

It’s not the first time the National Police has been honoured in this way; previous commemorations include the 175th anniversary in 1999.

In his speech, Francisco Pardo Piqueras expressed his appreciation to the Post Office and the National

Mint and Stamp Factory.

He also highlighted that the stamp reflects the commitment of the police to Spanish society and their role in promoting peace and coexistence.

Today, the National Police boasts around 74,000 officers, of which 12,600 are women, including four main commissioners in the Governing Board of the National Police.

Scandinavians best educated Michael Cano IT seems that whenever there is an index of positive traits in European Countries, Scandinavia always seems to be at the top or very close to it.

A new study by online tutoring school TutorSpace created an index of 17 factors relating to intelligence and development in 44 European countries.

They grouped these factors into four categories: · Education Quality and Access · Higher Education and Research · Literacy and Digital Literacy · Government Investment Using these categories, the team then

gave each country a score out of 100 and, finally, they calculated an overall score out of 100 and ranked the countries from highest to lowest. Switzerland topped the list and around a third of all adults aged between 25 and 64 have been educated up to university level. After Switzerland it’s the turn of the Scandinavians and in order, the brains of Europe are Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Of the countries with larger populations in Europe, only the UK perhaps surprisingly as high as number 10 and Germany at 11 made the top 15, whilst Spain for all of its commitment to higher education just doesn’t appear.

THE president of the Junta de Andalucia, Juanma Moreno, has announced that on January 29 the fourth drought decree will be approved with €200 million of aid in the face of the emergency situation and “extreme seriousness”, for which he called on the 8.5 million inhabitants to rationalise their use of water as much as possible.

Moreno, who chaired the third meeting of the committee of experts against the drought, explained that the new decree will include €50 million in aid for the agri-food sector and will go to help local councils, especially those whose municipalities already have supply problems.

“We are in an extreme situation and it is not a question of raising alarm, but of being realistic”, said Moreno.

“We all have to make an enormous effort to contain our water consumption”, added Moreno, pointing out that if it does not rain intensely during the remainder of the winter and in the spring, the summer will begin with water restrictions in several cities.

The expansion will result in a new 2,640 m2 store, an increase of 577 m2 from its current size.

THE Costa del Sol Axarquia Municipalities Consortium is set to make a splash at Fitur 2024 (the International Tourism Fair) with its campaign, ‘The Secret of Good Living,’ targeting both the general public and industry professionals. A TOTAL of 68,592 animals were killed on Sweden’s roads and railway tracks in 2023, an increase of almost 3,000 on 2022, the National Wildlife Accident Council said.

DOG owners living in Bolzano Province must pay €65 to test their pet’s DNA after which the results will be uploaded to a data base enabling the authorities to trace animals responsible for depositing poo on local streets. THE Social Affairs ministry suspended adoptions from the six countries currently cooperating with the Danish International Adoption Agency (DIA) following reports of irregularities. Graham Boland: Gone but never forgotten A ‘PROPER send-off’ took place on Monday, January 22 for the one and only ‘Happy Days’ Graham Boland.

Many people who holiday in Benidorm or have watched Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun will no doubt have heard of Graham ‘Happy Days’ Boland.

One of the town’s best known and best loved characters, he was a cherished soul. Unfortunately, Graham passed away on Tuesday January 16.

Graham Boland was a vital member of the Benidorm community, well-liked for his kind disposition and ability to make people happy. Both residents and visitors have experienced sadness upon learning of his passing.

Friends of the much-loved man from Benidorm have reported that the place was ‘completely packed’ as everyone came to say a final farewell to their dear friend.

FINNISH start-up company Aircohol is pioneering the creation of a vodka-like spirit using carbon dioxide (CO2) extracted directly from the atmosphere.

This ground-breaking approach has the potential to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint by an astonishing 50 per cent. As they say in their own words, ‘Aircohol is about saving the planet in a cheerful way!’

At the core of the process is a bioreactor that converts CO2 into alcohol through a two-day fermentation process, all while avoiding the emission of greenhouse gases.

FORTY-SIX per cent of Spanish firms now use artificial intelligence (AI) for some tasks, a study carried out for the Confederation of Business Organisations (CEOE) revealed. Only two companies said that they had reduced staff after introducing AI, compared with 8 per cent who said they had increased personnel.

PRICEY British sportswear label Sweaty Betty, which was bought by the US group Wolverine World in 2021, reported a loss of £5.1 million (€5.9 million) for the year ending January 2023.

Sales fell 8.5 per cent to £167.7 million while profits dipped to £66 million (€76.9 million) from £94.5 million (€110.2 million).

Pay rise

TELEFONICA and the unions agreed to a 3.1 per cent wage increase and a €150 bonus for 2024, as well as a reduction in the working week from 37.5 to 36 hours that comes into effect in 2026. Plans include reducing the workforce by 3,421 employees, with the “possibility” of further redundancies.

OCADO RETAIL has returned to the black after its “highest-ever” level of Christmas selling with more than 90 per cent of its peak delivery slots taken by mid-October. INFLATION in the UK rose unexpectedly to 4 per cent in December owing to higher alcohol and tobacco prices.

This was the first increase in 10 months after City economists had predicted a 3.8 per cent December figure following November’s 3.9 per cent.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the annual inflation rate increase was influenced by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s increases on alcohol and tobacco duty in his Autumn Statement, with prices rising by 9.6 per cent and 16 per cent respectively on the year.

The ONS’ chief economist Grant Fitzner pointed out that higher drinks and cigarette prices were partially offset by falling food inflation.

Magic wand SIR DAVE LEWIS, former chief executive of Tesco, has joined Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R), private equity owner of Morrisons. Sir Dave has been brought in to boost the supermarket chain as it fights to regain its market share three years after CD&R acquired it for £10 billion (€11.6 billion).

The experienced retailer reshaped Tesco’s fortunes during his time as its chief executive between 2014 and 2020 and CD&R now hope that he can do the same for Morrisons, which has lost its spot as Britain’s fourth-largest supermarket. Dead letters

ROYAL MAIL announced that it could need a government subsidy to prevent the postal service from going under.

The company lost £319 million (€372.1 million) in the first six months of its financial year, £100 million (€116.6 million) up on the same period in 2022.

There had been such an acute falloff in sending letters that it was no longer feasible to maintain a delivery network built for 20 billion letters when the company now handled seven billion, Royal Mail’s chief executive Martin Seidenberg said.

At the current rate this would decline to four billion within five years, he warned.

Aldi Inflation surprise expansion

Prices had still risen, he said, but they went up “at a much lower rate” than in December 2022.

There was little change in the price of factory-produced goods while raw materials were lower than in 2022,

Fitzner added.

Fuel prices dipped by 10.8 per cent in the year ending in December 2023, compared with a decline of 10.6 per cent in the year to November after a fall in petrol and diesel prices.

Services inflation rose a little from 6.1 per cent to 6.2 per cent but core inflation, which did not include items including energy, food, alcohol or tobacco, remained - against expectations - unchanged at 5.1 per cent.

City experts said this would come under scrutiny from the Bank of England as Threadneedle Street’s next bank rate decision is due on February 1 although a reduction was likely to be delayed until May.

TOBACCO: Increased duty affected December inflation.

INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES GROUP (IAG) is resigned to a full-scale European Union investigation into its plans to buy Spain’s Air Europa. The company, which owns British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus amongst others, announced in February 2023 that it would pay €400 million for the 80 per cent of Air Europa that it did not already own.

The company will now offer remedies and divest assets to allay the EU regulators’ concerns, IAG’s chief executive Luis Gallego said on January 16.

“This will allow them to fully assess the viability and relevance of our proposals,” Gallego said.

The IAG-Air Europa deal is one of several in the airline sector, as Lufthansa in Germany currently pursues a minority holding in Italy’s state-owned ITA Airways while Korean Air seeks to buy Asiana.

BIOTEST has left beleaguered Grifols with debts of €2 billion without contributing anything in the way of profits.

The Barcelona-based pharmaceuticals company acquired its German rival in April 2022 after issuing €2 billion in bonds to fund the ‘strategic transaction’.

The company, now under attack from short seller Gotham City Research, expected Biotest to make a major contribution to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation in 2024.

Up to 2023’s third quarter the operation has brought only negative results, with Biotest responsible for just €367 million of Grifols €4.82 billion earnings up to the end of 2023’s last quarter.

THE German retail chain operated 435 stores in Spain by late 2023 and will open 50 more in 2024.

Most are located in Andalucia, the Madrid Community, Valencian Community and Catalonia, the same regions where half the new stores will be located, Aldi revealed.

Others are planned for the Canary Islands, where Aldi arrived in 2022, although the low-cost chain intends to strengthen its existing market position in the Basque Region, Galicia, Cantabria and Castilla y Leon.

There are also plans for further supermarkets in Murcia, Baleares and Extremadura, Aldi said.

Help at hand

MIKE DANSON, the New Statesman’s multimillionaire owner, has injected millions into the magazine as losses accumulate. Since buying the political weekly 15 years ago, Danson had loaned £30 million (€35 million) to the parent company by late 2022 and continued bailing out the publication in 2023.

His holding company’s recently-filed accounts revealed £6.1 million (€7.1 million) losses in 2022 and debts totalling £34.4 million (€40.1 million).

A rescue strategy is in place and Danson has pledged to secure the New Statesman’s future, the Telegraph reported.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT THE ol boy was somewhat reticent about submitting this piece as the week’s offering. One of the reasons for my hesitance is a reluctance to present more fodder to the ‘woke brigade’. That bunch of seriously mislead or perfidious individuals, whose ruffling out departments pore over media and public reporting and infer that any accusation of foreign insurgents threatening the West is regarded as racist.

This latest escalation of the conflict(s) in the Middle East is to my mind so dangerous that we really have to ignore the threats and accusations made by this misinformed fallacious bunch and regardless of their opinions - tell it like it is. The latest threats emanating from Iran and the newly surfaced Houthi ‘rebels’ are dangerous in the extreme. This week Iran announced that the West would ‘pay dearly’ for the attacks in Yemen. This takes me back to similar rhetoric presented by bin Laden, when he also announced that, America would

‘pay’ and ‘fire and destruction’ would rain down on the streets of their cities.

Well, we all fully aware of how that threat was accomplished.

To carry out those horrific attacks was a difficult and well planned exercise. Today it would be much easier. In my opinion the ‘more immigrants the merrier’ attitude of the woke and misinformed authorities has resulted in hundreds of Europe’s enemies becoming firmly entrenched and are growing in numbers by the day. These people are known as sleepers. Fighting insurgents who lay dormant until they are awakened on the orders of regimes that were once described as far off, but now thanks to technical advances and communication, are almost literally just around the corner.

I truly am sorry, but as much as I would like to regard this as another Leapy rant, I’m afraid it actually is not. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Germany had a number of these ‘sleepers’ entrenched as ordinary British citizens and although they were few, before they were traced they were able to report and reveal many secretive activities and home actions by the British people and government. Imagine the outcome if for

some years before the outbreak of the Second World War, Germany had experienced vast numbers of their citizens being welcomed into British society? The war would have been lost in weeks.

The embedded enemies call to arms would have resulted in thousands of innocents being slaughtered and the halls of Westminster soon ringing to the victorious cries of Sieg Heil. Have no doubt, many of these present dormant enemies will be highly trained and have unlimited access to the weapons and explosives that are undoubtedly stored in caches of armaments dotted all over the country.

Someone has been paying for the immigrant boats, mobile phones and luxury trainers. The large majority of passengers are almost all young men of fighting age, accompanied by the occasional female or child passenger; a ruse merely to put the welcoming committee off the scent. I do sincerely hope I am wrong and this is indeed another Leapy rant. Somehow I seriously doubt it. Be careful out there.

John Smith THE baby western lowland gorilla, which was born at Prague Zoo on January 2 is a female and this was revealed to the world at large on Thursday January 18.

The two-week-old female is the first addition to the group of gorillas living in the Dja Reserve pavilion and she is the granddaughter of legendary gorilla Moji who was the first ever gorilla bred in the Czech Republic.

The gender was confirmed on the basis of a special examination in which DNA was isolated from the umbilical cord blood and umbilical cord.

British voting rights THE issue of voting as a resident in Spain still seems to be causing some confusion among the resident British community.

A reader’s question is ‘Do Brits with TIE, but temporary residency, get a vote at all?’

Predictably, there is not a short answer to this, but let’s take one at a time.

European elections: the simple answer is no you can’t. Even with a temporary TIE you are considered a full resident in Spain, and as the UK is no longer a member of the EU, we are not permitted. Having Spanish residency does not entitle us to the same voting rights as a native Spaniard.

Spanish elections: the only Spanish elections TIE holders may be able to vote in are Spanish local elections (for local councils). Once a person has been resident for three

years, they do have the right to vote in Council elections, and given that the next are in May 2027, anyone who currently hold a TIE, even if it is still ‘temporary’ will be eligible.

Having said this, British residents have to register to vote in a very short timescale prior to each election. In the 2023 elections, it was around six weeks from early December to mid-January. Presumably these dates will be

announced on an election by election basis. These are the only elections we can vote in in Spain.

UK elections: Additionally, you will still have the right to vote in UK elections. The UK government has just removed the exclusion for people who have been away from the UK for more than 15 years, so all Brits living in Spain, or elsewhere, will be able to vote in UK national elections.

Jigsaw record ANY jigsaw fans will know the sense of achievement one feels when they complete a mammoth puzzle of 1,000 pieces or more, imagine a jigsaw of 54,000 pieces.

Hans-Josef Schaadt, a 62-year-old man from Germany, has achieved an astonishing world record by completing a 54,000-piece puzzle in just 99 days. This remarkable accomplishment has left puzzle enthusiasts around the globe in awe.

Schaadt, a former miner who comes from Oberkirchen, North Rhineland, has officially set a new world record for the fastest assembly of a puzzle.

The previous record stood at 137 days, but Schaadt shattered this milestone by piecing together his massive 2.04 by 8.64-metre puzzle in a mere 99 days.

The enormous puzzle, weighing approximately 30 kilograms, featured over 55 replicas of iconic paintings, including the renowned Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci and Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

Finnish flyers face problems ALL signs point to a turbulent start to February, as a large-scale strike is set to hit the Finnish aviation sector.

Starting on February 1, a significant number of airport workers will join a countrywide political strike. This action, protesting against proposed labour market reforms by the government, will primarily affect major Finnish airports over a two-day period.

Alongside JHL, other unions such as PAM, the Finnish Aviation Union IAU, the Finnish Transport Workers’ Union AKT, and the Finnish Airline Pilots’ Association SLL are also expected to take part in the industrial action.

Operations at all major Finavia airports, except for the smaller ones at Halli and Utti, will be disrupted. This move will leave a noticeable impact on Finnish air travel for 48 hours.

Hakan Ekstrom stated, “We cannot stand idly by while our members are deprived of the means to defend decent working conditions.”

Finnair’s Vice President of Operations Control, Jari Paajanen, said, “It is clear that the strike will cause flight cancellations,

Royal recruit Catherine McGeer NORWAY’s Princess Ingrid Alexandra, the 19-year-old daughter of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has kicked off her military training at the Engineer Battalion in Øverbygd.

Following the footsteps of Spain’s Princess Leonor, the future queen was seen diving into military life this month.

During her training, Princess Ingrid Alexandra was observed learning about the different components of an assault rifle and mastering the skill of disassembling and reassembling it, as documented in a video released by NRK. Battalion Commander and Lieutenant Colonel Bjørn Kråkstad expressed their pride in having the royal train with them. The military officials emphasised that no special measures were taken for the princess, and she was subjected to the same expectations as all other soldiers.

DECISIONS MADE: Ministry of Climate and Environment for the Republic of Poland.

POLAND’S Minister for Climate and Environment Paulina Hennig-Kloska announced that decisions have been made to halt logging in 10 of Poland’s ancient forests.

The decision is to apply to designated areas in the primeval forests: Augustowska, Romincka, Borecka, Świętokrzyska, Knyszyńska, the area around Iwonicz Zdrój, forests around Wrocław and the Tricity, the Bieszczady, and the relict Carpathian Primeval Forest.

“These are valuable places in terms of nature and forests of significant social importance,” HenLinda Hall GERMANY has one of the world’s most comprehensive social welfare systems.

It allocates between 25 and 30 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) to pensions, health care, unemployment payments and other benefits, putting it well ahead of most European countries.

It is also the world’s second-largest donor of overseas aid for developing nations, spending €32 billion in 2022.

But now economists are asking how much longer this can last.

National daily Die Welt went so far as to quote The Economist which, 25 years after first attaching the damning label to Germany, asked if it was once again the sick man of Europe.

He added that 8,000 hectares of forest are to have logging halted and 4,000 hectares restricted.

Belts tightened The economy shrank by 0.3 per cent in 2023, making Germany the only EU nation that saw no growth and analysts do not expect much improvement for 2024.

High energy prices, insufficient state investment in innovation or infrastructure coupled with intrusive bureaucracy are to partly to blame, the experts said.

They also singled out the two million baby-boomers due to retire within the next five years who will stretch the continually-expanding pensions budget.

Others point to the ‘Debt Brake’ which prevents the government from borrowing more than 0.35 per cent of Germany’s annual national income,

a Constitutional requirement which the Social Democrat party (SPD) and Greens want to reform or eliminate, maintaining that it hampers investment.

Other parties, including the current coalition government’s third partner, the Free Democrats, and right-wing opposition parties defend the measure. It obliges politicians to practise budgetary accountability and ensures a manageable national debt, they argue.

Meanwhile, a ruling by Germany’s Constitutional Court has ordered the government to renegotiate its 2024 Budget, leaving it with a yawning €30 billion shortfall.

Europe’s greenest countries

A PRISONER at the Alphen aan den Rijn penitentiary institution in the Netherlands recently found a creative way of attempting to attain his freedom.

The man hatched an interesting plan to try to escape from the prison in late December 2023 which was by hiding in a wheelie bin!

Unfortunately, and perhaps not surprisingly, his plan was not successful, he didn’t even make it out of the prison gates!

However, employees at the incarceration centre did fail to notice his absence during multiple roll calls, only clocking that he was missing the following day, the penitentiary institution service DJI said in a report released on Monday, January 15.

According to other inmates, the prisoner was assisted by another inmate who helped him to hide himself inside the wheelie bin. The penitentiary is investigating how his absence went unnoticed during multiple cell rounds.

by Sweden which has set the target to eliminate net greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere by no later than 2045.

Of the 30 countries studied, Spain came in at a rather low 21, but was still ahead of France, Ireland and Portugal.

Breaking with tradition

IS it time for Belfast’s courts to embrace linguistic diversity and overturn an age-old convention?

In a ground-breaking moment for Belfast’s Irish-speaking community, witnesses have officially used the Irish language in court proceedings, a practice prohibited since 1737.

This long-standing legislation strictly requires the use of English in court settings to prevent any potential confusion, with a £20 fine handed out to any rule-breakers.

Attorney General John Larkin asserted that the regulation does not extend to spoken language, thereby allowing the verbal use of Irish in courts. Meanwhile, the written use of Irish is still prohibited.

The recent dispute concerns the display of Irish language signage at the Olympia Leisure Centre, which is situated in a predominantly loyalist area of south Belfast.

The conflict was ignited by a Sinn Fein proposal for bilingual signs, which was initially approved by a council committee.

The recent decision by the Spanish government has approved a royal decree mirroring a European directive that treats heated tobacco products, like the popular IQOS brand, in the same vein as conventional cigarettes.

Starting three months from its publication in the BOE (Boletin Oficial del Estado), heated tobacco packages will carry a warning message: ‘Tobacco smoke contains more than 70 carcinogenic substances.’

Additionally, these packages will feature graphic images illustrating the detrimental health effects of smoking, akin to those seen on traditional cigarette packs.

Spain’s new Minister of Health, Monica Garcia, plans to go further in her efforts to combat smoking-related issues by updating and tightening existing tobacco laws, with a focus on including ‘nicotine releasers’ to protect public health.

ACCORDING to Nebeus’ 2023 study on remote work trends, Spain emerges as the top dream destination for UK professionals seeking a better quality of life.

With 46 per cent of British professionals considering relocating for remote work, the survey sheds light on this trend.

In 2023, 44 per cent of Brits embraced remote work, a trend echoed globally.

Not only does it trim down commuting expenses, but it also opens doors to work from new countries.

For UK nationals seeking relocation for a better quality of life, one country stands out as the preferred destination for remote work, with 22 per cent choosing Spain as their first option with the United States second, and France third.

Spain’s allure lies in its blend of tradition and modernity, warm ambiance, and relaxed lifestyle. Surprisingly, 89 per cent of respondents are unaware of Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa, designed to enable remote work without changing jobs.

When contemplating a move to Spain, respondents expressed their concerns about healthcare costs, language difficulties, and the cost of living and leaving loved ones behind.

IN a remarkable turn of events, police have recovered two priceless works of art that were stolen 13 years ago.

Belgian authorities have successfully located two stolen masterpieces, one

by Pablo Picasso and another by Marc Chagall, after they had been missing for a staggering 13 years.

by Chagall, were found in pristine condition, complete with their original frames and without any signs of damage.

Namur’s Federal Judicial Police received a tip-off towards the end of 2022, alerting them to the fact that a Belgian resident in Namur had attempted to sell the two missing artworks, which had been stolen from a private collector in Tel Aviv, Israel, back in 2010.

The combined value of the artworks stood at approximately €900,000 when they were lifted.

Despite the collector’s residence being equipped with a state-of-the-art alarm system, the thieves managed to disable it and gain entry to the empty premises, then made off with both the valuable artwork and the jewellery.

The comprehensive inquiry aimed to ascertain whether the suspect indeed possessed the stolen

art and to recover it without delay.

In the course of 2023, police concluded that the suspect was in possession of the sought-after paintings, likely stored either at his own residence or a relative’s.

Continuing their relentless pursuit, investigators conducted a third search, this time in Antwerp.

Deep within a well-equipped basement, the stolen Picasso and Chagall paintings were discovered concealed in wooden boxes with securely fastened lids.

EVERY few months when one or other of the British newspapers are short of a silly story, they focus on an invariably elderly English lady who has complained because her holiday in Spain was spoiled by a combination of too many Spaniards also on holiday, Spanish food and no-one speaking English.

This time, we have been able to amuse readers with the story of an American TikTok traveller who was moved to tears when visiting France as even though she had armed herself with a pink beret, she felt isolated and unwanted because she doesn’t speak French.

Well she got her two minutes of fame, move on. If she goes to Yorkshire is she going to wear a flat cap and buy a whippet?

A RECENT operation by the National Police has dismantled a criminal organisation involved in the illegal importation, breeding, and selling of puppies.

The report gave details of the investigation which took place in the provinces of Madrid and Girona and resulted in the arrest of eight individuals.

The investigation began after police received tips about the existence of an organisation importing puppies from Eastern European countries.

These puppies, once in Spain, were sold with falsified documentation.

During the operation, more than 100 animals, primarily puppies of various breeds, were rescued.

The organisation were involved in purchasing

animals from farms in Slovakia and Hungary or domestic breeders.

The animals endured journeys over 15 hours long, often arriving in Spain with altered records, younger than permitted, and suffering from various illnesses.

The animals were then sent to breeding and trading establishments in Madrid and Catalonia.

Here, they received treatments and vaccines, and their health records were falsified using a trusted veterinarian’s stamp to give a legal appearance to numerous documents.

All animals were put up for sale by the organization.

However, over the last six months, more than 500 animals, mainly puppies, have been rescued across Spain.

End of ITV stickers THE General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) in Spain has announced its latest plans to embrace digital advancements with regard to Spanish vehicle inspections.

2024 marks a significant transition as the DGT discontinues the traditional ITV (Technical Vehicle Inspection) labels that have adorned car windshields in Spain for over 30 years.

On a date yet to be announced, the DGT will formally replace the physical ITV stickers with a digital alternative.

This move is part of a broader initiative to digitalise administrative processes, aiming to modernise the system and enhance road authorities’ efficiency during vehicle inspections.

As a substitute for the sticker, the DGT is going to promote a new application or electronic system through which both authorities and drivers can access the status of the vehicles’ ITV and all relevant information.

TV turnaround VODAFONE made the decision in 2022 to withdraw from broadcasting football in bars, cafes, and hotels due to escalating costs, but that decision has recently been reversed.

Vodafone Spain, now under the impending ownership of British company Zegona, is set to return to televised football and other sports in hospitality establishments.

Sources have revealed that Vodafone is on the brink of a comeback and is finalising an agreement with LaLiga to recommence offering these popular sports packages to its hospitality business clients.

The aim is to start broadcasting LaLiga this season (2023-2024), along with major UEFA competitions like the Champions League and Europa League.

This package will also include MotoGP and Formula 1, which became part of the LaLiga Bar TV package.

In the summer of 2022, Vodafone made a limited foray into residential broadcasting by acquiring rights to La Liga Hypermotion, the Spanish Second Division football. This content was bundled in a sports package at a cost of €6, including Eurosport sports as well.

Zegona, set to become Vodafone’s new owner in the coming months, has outlined several strategies for growth, particularly in television content.

Additionally, they plan to leverage Lowi, Vodafone’s ‘low cost’ brand, to broaden the customer base by introducing TV into their packages.

In parallel to Vodafone’s negotiations, LaLiga is resolving the auction of Telefonica’s packages - 55 per cent of the total - for the seasons from 2024-2025 to 2026/2027.

The incumbent is expected to retain these assets, though the price remains a point of speculation, previously set at €520 million per season.

FORMULA ONE’S new season will feature a record 24 races and will start on March 2 at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Before the start of the season however, fans look forward to the unveiling of the cars for 2024. Williams and Stake F1 Team (originally Sauber) will lead the way on February 5, followed by other major teams like Aston Martin and Ferrari (February 12 and 13). McLaren and Mercedes are due to show the world their cars on February 14 followed by Red Bull on February 15.

F1’s pre-season testing for 2024 will begin on February 21 in Bahrain.

John Smith THE exodus to Saudi Arabia from European Football Clubs which started six months ago has now seen its first big name decide to leave.

Former Liverpool skipper and regular England midfielder Jordan Henderson has decided that life in Saudi Arabia is not for him and his family and in order to allow a clean break which won’t cost them any wages or fees, his club Al Etiffaq, managed by Steven Gerard, has agreed to terminate his contract.

After playing 19 matches for the Saudi club, this means that he is free to find another club during the January transfer window and It appears that Dutch side Ajax who are sitting in fifth place in the Dutch First Division are making a bid for him.

According to Sky Sports he was due to fly to The Netherlands to finalise the deal on January 18 but as he doesn’t have a work permit for Holland as yet, he won’t be able to play for over them over the following weekend. Not every player who made the move has settled in to life in Saudi Arabia and although the money is no doubt good, the lack of crowds and quality of matches means that Henderson whilst the first, may not be the last of the British players to return to Europe.
