Tourism recognition Optimistic outlook

Nora Shephard IN the year 2023, the Department of Tourism processed a total of 39 ‘Tourist Municipality’ recognitions in the Valencian Community.

This distinction offers various benefits, including the opportunity to access extraordinary financing from Turisme Comunitat Valenciana, aiming to alleviate financial challenges faced by these town councils.

TOURIST RECOGNITION: Helping the local economy.

The 39 localities have now joined the registry of Tourist Municipality of the Valencian

Phase II completed BENIDORM has successfully concluded the renovation of exterior lighting at the junction of National Highway 332 with the entrance to Benidorm through Avenida Comunidad Valenciana.

This initiative is part of Phase 2 of the programme funded by IDAE (Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy).

The comprehensive renovation involved the replacement of lighting fixtures and the refurbishment of the entire installation, including the replacement of wiring, staffs, and the repair of manholes.

The electrical installation has been upgraded with 42 LED lights featuring remote management capabilities, and a new command centre has been installed.

The stretch covered by this project is located between kilometre points 151+560 and 152+130 in a non-urban section of the N-332. To minimise the impact on traffic, the work was strategically scheduled during periods of lower traffic intensity.

Community, contributing to the existing 62 destinations with the distinctive ‘Tourist Municipality’ status, adhering to the new regulations.

It is important to note that destinations seeking recognition must demonstrate compliance with specific requirements related to tourist population, accommodation places, tourist resources, and the significance of tourism in the local economy.

The recognition can fall into different categories, namely Tourist Municipality of Excellence, Tourist Municipality of Relevance, and Tourist Municipality of Singularity, depending on the municipality’s specific attributes and characteristics.

THE Costa Blanca, excluding Benidorm, concluded the last 15 days of 2023 with an outstanding average occupancy rate of 57.2 per cent, contributing to an impressive annual average of 72.9 per cent.

This exceptional data marked a significant increase of 4.1 percentage points over the 2019 records, which registered an annual occupancy rate of 68.8 per cent.

While January and December recorded the lowest monthly occupan-

cies, it’s noteworthy that each month in 2023 surpassed the 2019 figures.

August emerged as the peak month with a remarkable 91 per cent occupancy.

The balance between national and international tourists remained fairly even, with international visitors gaining ground and increasing by 3.5 points, reaching 48.4 per cent.

ON January 5, the Three Kings of Denia made a surprise visit to Denia Hospital.

Led by Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltasar, the Holiday Delegation of the Denia Town Council convoy visited patients at the Maternity and Pediatrics units, bringing unexpected joy and treats.

ALTEA currently boasts 2,200 tourist residences, constituting 13 per cent of the municipality’s residences, a ratio some experts deem excessive. To address this, there is now a temporary suspension of new Residential Tourist Accommodation Licences to alleviate tourist pressure in designated areas.

Good outcome

ALICANTE’S commerce, hospitality, and tourism have smoothly resumed their routine post-holidays, showcasing positive outcomes from the council’s Christmas Tourism Campaign. The city’s Tourist Board estimates a substantial impact of €3,000,000, with most sectors surpassing the figures from 2022.

Iconic Delfin

THE iconic Gran Hotel Delfín in Benidorm, situated on the first line of Poniente beach, is set to give way to a 44-storey tower as its days draw to a close. Benidorm has already approved the construction licence for the new project, which will retain the same iconic name.

Cultural bang

LA NUCIA’S cultural calendar for 2024 has kicked off with a bang! Over 400 attendees delighted in ‘Puss in Boots - The Musical’ on January 7 at the Auditori.

The theatrical production seamlessly blended music and puppets accompanied by impressive set design and great music.

The panels, strategically placed in prominent locations like the castles of Santa Bárbara and San Fernando, Las Cigarreras, ADDA, the Central Market, Luceros, MARQ, and more, serve as informative markers highlighting the origin and history of notable elements.

To make this information accessible to a diverse audience, the panels feature explanations in Spanish, Valencian, and English, with Braille included for those with visual impairments.

In just one year, over 800 people from 32 nationalities have embraced this engaging experience, showcasing the success of initiatives that blend heritage promotion with interactive and accessible tourism.

ID renewal Kings of Campello THE mobile team responsible for the renewal of Identity Documents is set to return to Villajoyosa.

Interested individuals can now apply for their appointment to renew their ID at the Local Police Station or by calling (+34) 965 890 050 between 8.00am and 2.00pm, Monday to Friday.

The ID renewal service is scheduled to cater to residents with appointments on January 16 and 18 at Cespol, located on Avenida Pianista Gonzalo Soriano Avenue.

To attend the appointment visitors are requested to bring their ID, a recent photo (taken within the last six months), and the applicable fee of €12.

On January 16, the mobile service team will collect documentation from those with appointments between 9.30am and 11.30am.

Subsequently, on January 18, the team will distribute the renewed documents to individuals at Cespol between 9.30am and 11.30am.

This Identity Document Renewal Service will take place approximately every three months at Cespol, ensuring regular opportunities for residents in Villajoyosa to conveniently undertake this administrative procedure.

THE El Campello Three Wise Men’s Parade drew a large crowd as usual, taking place along a circuit that included the esplanade of the Club Náutico, Calle Sant Vicent, Avenida Carrer la Mar, Avenida de la Generalitat, and Calles Doctor Fleming and Mayor.

The event, held on January 6, featured a pavilion where Their Majesties Melchior, Gaspar, and Baltasar personally delivered gifts to numerous boys and girls.

The design of the parade incorporates various biblical characters, such as the Announcing Angel, Herod, Roman military units, and the Jewish Guard.

The procession also includes pages, royal postmen, carriages with the Kings, music, dance, fire spits, banners, chests for children to deposit their letters, and a music band.

El Campello’s Three Kings Parade is the first parade to take place in the Alicante region, attracting hundreds of families from different locations to enjoy this traditional celebration.

The Kings distributed gifts, and the celebration concluded with chocolate and sweets courtesy of the council.

Kings of the Orient ON January 5, the arrival of the Kings of the Orient in Villajoyosa captivated thousands of spectators who filled the streets of the town centre.

The Royal Cavalcade commenced at 6.30pm featuring the new royal car accompanied by the festive tunes of the Villajoyosa Choir.

The procession included various characters such as Herod, Roman soldiers, and the inhabitants of Bethlehem, alongside dance groups Almadrava i Centener and the Colla Els Valerios.

The Royal Postman paraded carrying letters from children.

The most anticipated moment arrived with the arrival of Their Majesties Melchior, Gaspar, and Baltasar on camels.

The Kings paraded before their flags, exchanging greetings with the public, while patrons distributed chocolates.

Over 300 participants took part in the Cavalcade, concluding at jardí de la Barbera.

Additionally, Their Majesties visited the Hospital Comarcal Marina Baixa, the Fundació Aragonès Day Centre, the Ballesol Residential Home, the Les Talaies Centre, and the Asilo Santa Marta Residential Home, sharing gifts and festive spirit with the residents and children.

Moving forward together VIEWPOINT BILL ANDERSON LIFE sometimes takes us in unexpected directions, and whilst I have been writing columns for the Euro Weekly News (EWN) for some time now, being appointed Editor was never on my radar. Having said that, I am both excited and enthusiastic about working with the team to take the brand forward.

I am delighted to have joined the Euro Weekly team.

After four years in the political world, it is good to return to the real world and contributing to getting the news out there is a challenge. News content is a bit like restaurant menus: some like McDonald’s, and some like Michelin Star restaurants. The important thing is having enough variety that everyone can leave happy and satisfied. I will be working on this with the team. I’m sure we will not please everyone, but that’s life.

For some time now, the Euro Weekly News

(EWN) has been in pole position amongst all of the independent Press in Spain in championing the excellent work done by charitable organisations and those who raise funds for good causes. This commitment will continue.

As we enter 2024, many parts of Spain still face challenges. Although we have had a smattering of rain, drought is still the order of the day with many areas dealing with continued water restrictions.

There have been many political debates around this matter but very little action. Without having expertise in the area of water storage and supply, I do understand that desalination is one way forward, but not an absolute solution to the problem. Construction around the coasts escalates without a clear solution to the water supply problem.

Transport also presents some challenges for 2024. With Low Emission Zones (LEZ) being introduced in many of the larger municipalities, many people with older vehicles could find themselves in difficulty.

The reality for those of us who live along the Spanish coast, with one or two excep-

tions, is that we live moderately rural lives with very limited public transport options or even availability. There has been a lot of ‘jawjaw’ about this, but we know that major improvements will not happen overnight.

Politicians are often very good at making life harder for us, but not so efficient at anticipating future needs and acting before it becomes a problem.

2024 could be a big year internationally, as there are around 40 elections taking place.

Let’s see if it is more of the same or all change for the better, or otherwise. There have been some big shifts in voting preferences in recent times, so could it be exciting times ahead?

Population dynamics ACCORDING to the latest figures published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), most municipalities in the region have seen population growth, except for l’Alfas del Pi. Unfortunately, l’Alfas del Pi has experienced a decrease in its population, with a reduction of 150 people as of January 1, 2023, reaching 20,518 registered residents (compared to 20,668 the previous year).

Although the municipality had seen growth in the years prior, this recent decline follows a similar trend from 2021 when the population dropped from 20,482 to 20,042 registered residents.

Altea has also experienced population growth, gaining 810 inhabitants and reaching a total of 23,820 registered residents. La Nucia saw a modest increase from 18,624 to 18,970 in 2023.

Finestrat has surpassed the 8,000 inhabitants mark, registering 8,836 people compared to 7,909 the previous year.

Mayor’s gratitude THE swift action and effective coordination by firefighters led to the rapid containment and control of the fire in Altea that ignited on January 6.

Diego Zaragozi, the mayor of Altea, expressed his gratitude to the firefighters, stating, “Thanks to the fast and tireless work of numerous fire, land, and air units, the support of the Guardia Civil, and the civic collaboration of neighbours and volunteers, we were able to control this fire that could have had irreversible and dramatic consequences for our town and many of our neighbours.”

In acknowledgement of the collaborative efforts, the mayor extended his appreciation to everyone involved in the rapid extinction and containment of the potentially devastating fire.

The response included 21 firefighters from the Provincial Council of Alicante, five Forestry firefighters of the Generalitat, six fire trucks, two coordinators, four aerial units, two SAMU+Support Basic Life ambulances and technicians.

The mayor concluded with a plea for caution, urging people to exercise prudence when engaging in activities that involve controlled fires, discarding cigarette butts, or any actions that may pose a risk of fire, particularly during windy conditions.

The Benidorm Hosbec Hotel Association has provided an overview of the year, emphasising its positive trajectory as the tourism sector rebounds from the impact of the pandemic.

On the Costa Blanca, hotels associated with Hosbec achieved an average annual occupancy of 72.9 per cent, surpassing 2019 figures by 4.1 per cent.

The province of Valencia closed the year with an 81 per cent occupancy rate, with the city of Valencia leading the way with the best annual average occupancy data at 81.3 per cent.

This represents an increase of almost three percentage points compared to 2019.

The provincial balance between international and national visitors is maintained, but in Valencia, the volume of international tourists rises to 64.2 per cent, with Dutch and British markets taking the lead.

Benidorm, boasting an average available hotel floor of 120 accommodations and over 41,000 beds throughout the year, reached an average occupancy of 80.4 per cent in 2023.

Nora Shephard THE construction of ‘L’Edifici de l’Esport’ in La Nucía is progressing, with the structure reaching the fourth and final floor.

The objective is to complete

the building by the last weekend of June, coinciding with the Spanish Athletics Championships.

The new facility, an investment of €4.8 million by the La Nucia Town Council, will serve

as the nerve centre of the Ciutat Esportiva, housing central offices for coordination and management.

‘L’Edifici de l’Esport’ comprises a ground floor and four floors, with a total constructed area of 1,829.33 square metres.

Positioned between the Estadi Olimpic Camilo Cano and the Muixara Pavilion, the building is designed to centralise the management, administration, and coordination of the Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano.

The structure will feature an illuminated LED façade, aligning with the aesthetics of the nearby stadium and pavilion.

The mayor of La Nucia, Bernabé Cano, expressed optimism about the project’s progress and hoped to inaugurate the building during the Spanish Athletics Championships.

The facility will serve as a multifunctional hub for the sports department, clubs, schools, and federations, contributing to the dynamic operation of the Sports City.

IN a collaborative and community-driven initiative, the directors of CF Benidorm and TM Benidorm Football Clubs have formalised a loyalty agreement, allowing fans of both teams to support each other without incurring any costs.

Under this agreement, supporters of the TM Benidorm handball team will have the opportunity to attend the CF Benidorm football match at the Guillermo Amor stadium on the upcoming Sunday, January 14, at midday.

The will also feature the presentation of the football teams at 10.00am.

CF Benidorm enthusiasts will enjoy a similar privilege on February 17 when the city’s first handball team, TM Benidorm, competes against Frigoríficos del Morrazo in a Liga Asobal match. LOCAL NEWS II euroweeklynews.com THE first two cruise ships of the year brought around 8,400 people to the Port of Alicante on January 6 and 9, marking the beginning of what is anticipated to be a record-breaking season.

On Saturday, January 6, the Iona from P&O Cruises arrived, a day later than initially announced, boasting a capacity for 5,200 passengers.

This sizeable vessel docked from 8.00am ON Friday, January 5, the streets of Alicante’s centre drew a crowd of over 60,000 people who gathered to witness the Three Wise Men’s Parade.

The impressive procession, comprising 20 floats and approximately 1,200 participants, commenced from Avenida Estación shortly after 7:00 PM, concluding its journey in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento about two hours later.

Preceding the parade, an enthusiastic crowd of 4,000 people gathered to witness the live greeting of Their Majesties of the East in the Plaza de Toros.

Following their arrival in Alicante on the Escaleritas de la Reina at the port, around THE refurbishment of the parquet flooring at the sports court of the Palau d’Esports Vila d’Altea has been completed, as announced by the councillor for Sports, Sara Soler.

This enhancement initiative, initiated on December 18, has undergone a week of drying and cleaning and is now fully operational.

Reflecting on the festive season, Mayor Barcala noted, “It has been a Christmas to remember, marked by very high participation in the main events and a large presence of people in our streets from the first day to this impressive number of more than 60,000 attendees at the parade.”

be transformed into four eight-a-side pitches, occupying the area that was previously the athletics track. Constructed with artificial grass, the dimensions comply with UEFA standards, making them suitable for hosting sports competitions. The fields are

equipped with a central aisle, anticipating the installation of additional stands in the future. The renovation project also included updates to the plumbing and the installation of pop-up sprinklers concealed behind the irrigation system.

Festive joy

ON a beautiful morning just before Christmas 30 members of the U3A Vall del Pop left Jalon to stay for five days over Christmas at Roquetas de Mar. Members were pleased with their rooms, with beautiful sea views and sitting rooms attached, our own mini apartments.

Their hotel was situated right on the beach and there were lovely walks on the promenades. They went on a guided trip to the port town of Almeria and to the famous Cabo de Gata.

Everyone sang carols, drank cava, danced around their handbags and to the amusement of other guests, danced a conga around the reception!

Smart City

Bob Marquess ALICANTE has positioned itself as a technological leader in the digital transformation of local administration, boasting innovative projects like the 16 cyber-kiosks or AL21.

These initiatives aim to enhance and transform resident and council relationships through technology, electronic media, and artificial intelligence.

Additionally, the city achieved a notable milestone with over 2,079,899 users accessing its website, alicante.es, in 2023.

Nucia Kings Live screening THE Palau d’Esports l’Illa de Benidorm, originally a sports field, is now undergoing transformation into a television set to host the third edition of the Benidorm Fest.

This music competition, organised by Spanish Radio Television, the Generalitat Valenciana, and the city council of Benidorm, aims to select the Spanish representative for Eurovision.

The event is scheduled to take place in Benidorm from January 29 to February 4.

The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, visited the venue to inspect the ongoing work. Approximately 150 RTVE operators are involved in the transformation, with the number set to increase to 300 in the

Seismic surge

ALICANTE Province has experienced a notably active seismic year in 2023, as revealed by data from the National Geographic Institute.

A total of 91 seismic movements, ranging between 1.5 and 3.8 degrees on the Richter scale, were detected throughout the year.

This marked a substantial increase of 70.3 per cent compared to the 64 earthquakes recorded in 2022.

The seismic activity in 2023 also surpassed figu-

res from previous years, with 76 earthquakes in 2021 and 68 in 2020.

The Alcoia region notably led the count with 29 earthquakes, followed by Vega Baja with 11, and the Middle and Lower Vinalopo regions each recorded eight earthquakes.

BENIDORM has experienced a notable population increase, with a rise of 2,604 residents, bringing the total population to 72,342 as of January 1, 2023, according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This surge in population, the most significant in recent years, is attributed to factors such as urban development in areas like Poniente and enhanced benefits for residents. The municipality ranks among the fastest-growing in population within the province, surpassing the 72,000 inhabitants mark for the first time since 2013.

With the exception of 2020, when it remained below 70,000, the population had consistently stayed below this threshold. The INE data indicates that Benidorm now boasts 72,342 inhabitants, a notable increase of 2,604 compared to January 1, 2022, when the official figure was 69,738. The population had seen a modest increase of 620 in the year prior, from 69,118 in 2021. In 2020, the official figures rose to 70,450 residents, marking a change from the 2019 count of 68,721.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of the CV-758 highway, triggering a swift response from the Provincial Firefighters Consortium of the Marina Baixa Park in Benidorm.

Firefighters were deployed with a headquarters vehicle, a heavy rural pumper, and a supply vehicle equipped with an 11,500-litre water tank. Local Police from Benidorm and Finestrat assisted by redirecting traffic to facilitate operations.

No as Cristine will always cope with any allergy or preference with a smile, which often makes life easier for myself as I have eating problems!

My partner and I had eaten at The Avenida Cafe, which was part of Mercadona until closed down and enlarged, so they returned to Bar Paco, owned and named after dad, who had run it with wife, Carmen, and family for years, but sadly, he is no longer with us.

Most days regular workers and locals use this eatery, as they never know what to expect on the menu, but always a delight.

Our firm represented a buyer who purchased a property, started to rent it out as a tourist rental and faced the opposition of the Homeowners' Association.

Ban on tourist rentals.

Horizontal Property Law Article 17.12 of the Horizontal Property Law (LPH) allows communities

to limit or condition tourist rentals by 3/5 of the votes and quotas. However, when the Board of Owners approves a ‘prohibition’ of these characteristics, we must ask ourselves: What happens to the new owners? Do these limitations also apply to people who purchase a property after the prohibition?

The registration in the Land Registry is key Certainly, the Meeting of Owners can establish limitations on the use or destination of the dwellings in a community. But these prohibitions will only be enforceable against new owners if previously registered in the Land Registry. This is established

in article 5 of the Horizontal Property Law, which states that these limitations constitute ‘a private statute that will not be prejudicial to third parties if it has not been registered in the Property Register’.

Seems logical and reasonable that a limitation to the right of ownership is public and can be known in advance by any purchaser. It would not make much sense that buyers request dozens and dozens of minutes of previous meetings from vendors in order to find out whether or not there is any relevant limitation on the property they intend to purchase.

The specific case. Ban on tourist rentals by the Internal Regime Our client bought a property in an Urbanisation in Javea. She obtained the tourist licence from the Generalitat Valenciana and started renting it out through

this modality. After the acquisition, the Community of Owners informed her that this type of rental was prohibited by the Internal Regulations. And required her to cease the activity or the community would initiate legal proceedings against her.

After studying the case, we voluntarily went to court to confirm whether or not she had the right to carry out the tourist activity.

The court ruling.

Declaration of nullity of the agreement prohibiting tourist rentals The Court of Denia, as requested in our lawsuit, has confirmed in its judgement that: - The instrument used by the community for the ban on tourist rentals was not correct. The Internal Regulations (art. 6 LPH) are intended to regulate the details of cohabitation, the use of the common services, etc. But cannot establish

limitations or prohibitions to the right of ownership. For this, the appropriate channel are the Statutes (art. 5 LPH).

Furthermore, the prohibition established by the Community does not apply to our client because at the time of becoming the owner, the limitation was not duly registered in the Land Registry.

- Finally, the nullity of the ban on tourist rentals is declared null and void, and the Community must allow our client to carry out the tourist activity normally.

German tourists have been awarded compensation by a court in Hanover, Germany after complaining about the morning sunbed race at a Greek hotel. Managers at the Atlantica Mikri Poli hotel in Rhodes instigated a ‘no reservation’ policy that meant guests who put down towels on their sunbeds had to use them or lose them.

However, the German holidaymakers told the court they’d been unable to find any available sun loungers on one occasion. They reported staff at the TUI hotel failed to implement the policy, which meant, they said, one morning they’d been unable to find any available sunbeds around any of the resort’s six pools.

Hanover District Court ordered the hotel to pay €300 as compensation for the part of the holiday the family had been unable to enjoy. The verdict is still subject to an appeal and is not yet legally binding.

ALAN BOARDMAN is well-known for his Walking Tours for charity. Now he and his wife bring this goodwill to The Gambia.

So what does The Gambia have to do with Spain? My wife, Jenny and I are on holiday there and have taken with us thousands of articles donated to what we called our EYEDROP campaign.

The Gambia, despite having a successful tourist industry, is among the poorest countries in the world, rates 174 out of 191 in the world wealth index. This means there is a major issue with eyesight, the treatment for which is desperately underfunded. Spectacles in The Gambia are very expensive and are simply out of reach for most people.

Before leaving our home in Mijas we launched the EYEDROP appeal, as a result of which, almost 400 pairs of new and used spectacles were donated by the general public. We received sterling support from several local charities and businesses who allowed their premises to be used as donation centres.

A HISTORIC factory in the Polish city of Bielsko-Biała, which has operated since 1948 and produced the iconic Fiat 126p ‘Maluch’, will close with the loss of over 450 jobs according to ‘Notes from Poland’.

It was announced at the beginning of 2024 that the FCA Powertrain plant in Bielsko-Biała was being put into liquidation. A trade union said EU restrictions on vehicle emissions are the reason for the decision.

During the communist era, the then state-owned plant produced cars under licence from Fiat, including the famous ‘Maluch’ (meaning ‘little one’). In 1992 the facility was privatised and taken over by Fiat.

River water peaks

HIGH WATER: Many areas of the Netherlands have been recently flooded.

THE Rhine River reached its highest level on Sunday, January 7, as it saw its fourth high water peak since November of last year.

It is extremely rare that such high-water levels of the river are observed in this relatively short period of time. However, the large amounts of rainfall have contributed to this, as well as the flooding across the nation.

As a result of this, the flooding along the major rivers was expected to continue into this week, partly because the soil is

so saturated by the rain that it now can no longer absorb any more water.

Various water boards in the Netherlands, alongside the authorities and Rijkswaterstaat will continue to closely monitor the situation, especially for damage that could make the now soaking wet dikes unstable.

To process the volume of water, Rijkswaterstaat put the large weirs on the Lower Rhine near Driel and the Lek near Amerongen to use. The Ravenswaaij barrier was closed to shipping tra-

ffic, alongside the Princess Marijke locks in the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal near Tiel.

The high water also resulted in the closing of the quays and some streets in Nijmegen, Tiel and Arnhem.

Herd managers, being warned of the coming weather, have already moved their cattle onto dry land.

Sandbags have been placed around doors in residential areas, including Leerdam, Utrecht, to prevent flooding from overflowing rivers.

Iberdrola calls off US deal

IBERDROLA pulled out of its $8.3 billion (€7.5 billion) acquisition of New Mexico-based PNM Resources.

The deal, which would have made Iberdrola subsidiary Avangrid one of the largest utility companies in the US, was cancelled on January 2.

Avangrid explained that the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission vetoed the transaction in 2021 on “quality of service” grounds and a subsequent appeal was now enmired in the courts.

The New Mexico regulator had also cited the Villarejo scandal which named Iberdrola chairman Ignacio

Gold rush SALES of gold, precious metals and coins rose 7 per cent last year compared with 2022.

As the number of people turning to gold overtakes the 2020 boom experienced during lockdown, the Royal Mint said this was the result of an increase in smaller investors looking for a “safe haven.”

Nevertheless, the Royal Mint’s payments to customers selling back their gold soared by almost 50 per cent as gold reached a record high last year.

SPANISH logistics group has bought Belgium Parcels Service (BPS), a company that specialises in the urgent distribution of pharmaceuticals in Belgium and Luxembourg.

“This acquisition represents an important milestone in Logista’s expansion in Europe,” the company announced. “It also strengthens its position in pharmaceutical distribution and the courier segment.”

BPS provides 24-hour courier services in Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as 24- and 48-hour services in the Netherlands, France and Germany.

Logista paid approximately €8 million for BPS, as it continues its strategy of focusing on geographical and business diversification.

Red card FC BARCELONA will sue Libero Football Finance AG for defaulting on its €40 million payment for a 10 per cent holding in the Barça Vision online media company.

This payment was fundamental to Barcelona’s plans to float its content subsidiary Barça Media on Nasdaq, the New York stock exchange, which was originally planned for the end of 2023.

Daily fine BRITISH telecoms company BT missed the December 31 deadline imposed by the government on security grounds to remove all equipment made by Chinese company Huawei from its core network.

The cut-off date had been extended on two occasions and missing it again could expose BT to a daily fine of £100,000 (€115,959) for every day over the deadline.

If Hamas were to discontinue their policies of hiding behind, or literally underneath the populace and repositioned themselves in more unpopulated areas, or indeed were prepared to sit around the negotiating table, the horrendous death toll that is befalling the inhabitants of the country would probably be terminated in days. But they won’t will they? The more Palestinians that are sacrificed, the more they can blame the atrocities on the Israelis, whose generals, rest assured, would be only too relieved to continue

or end the conflict without the horrific slaughter of so many civilians. The Hamas warren of tunnels and war rooms have been purposely constructed under hospitals, schools and religious establishments, primarily to avoid attack or if it should subsequently take place, be able to blame the enemy for the horror and killing of their innocent nationals. To also witness the anti-sematic attitude and actions of a vast number of mid-East immigrants is also completely unacceptable.

It is important for these refugees and their kin to remember they were expected to leave their difficulties and hatred behind them, not revive them in countries who have offered them succour and the chance to live a peaceful and harmonious future with their

neighbours. When the Jewish people fled the ravages of Hitler and the holocaust, they entered Britain with jubilation and thanks. They then proceeded to blend into the British way of life.

They diversified into business and the astute among them employed many of the local populace, who were always treated with respect love and not a little humour. The areas they created were not ‘no go’ communities riddled with hate and religious fervour.

All manner of faiths and different beliefs were welcomed into their homes and schools of teaching.

If the majority of Mid-East immigrants don’t learn to live and respect the laws of the countries that have welcomed them, it can only end in one way. The Far Right will grow in stature and subsequently the great cities of the West will soon begin to resemble the ravages of Gaza and Beirut.

In the words of John Lennon. ‘Give peace a Chance’. If you don’t, the future of us all looks very bleak indeed.

Record visitors for Picasso Museum in 2023 THE Museo Picasso Malaga has seen a record number of visitors walk through its doors during the year 2023.

2023 saw the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, and the museum marked this event by advertising a special exposition in honour of the Malaga born artist’s passing.

The record number of visitors was a massive 779,279 people that came to the museum, around 8 per cent more than in 2019, which was the best year to date in the 20 years that the attraction has been open.

It is also 21 per cent more visitors than the year prior, 2022.

The museum made their proud announcement on Friday December 29, and another piece of exciting news was to follow.

It was then publicised that artist Miguel Lopez-Remiro will be the new director of the Picasso Museum in 2024.

Miguel is originally from Pamplona and is aged 46 years old. He has previously worked as deputy curatorial director of the Guggenheim Bilbao and director of the University of Navarra Museum.

It looks like even more great things are in store for this cultural landmark in the south of Spain.

The wonders of sardines ALL sardines are nutritious, even the canned ones. Researchers at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona have concluded that two cans of sardines in olive oil per week can help prevent type-2 diabetes in people over the age of 65.

As fresh seafood, sardines can be a savoury, protein-rich addition to Caesar salads, pasta dishes, or enjoyable on their own.

While fresh sardines are seasonal, reaching peak abundance between the months of July and November, they can typically be found in stores all year round. According to a report by a news source, the fresh ones have a higher healthy fat content than their canned counterparts and are sometimes tastier, but experts urge the consumption of sardines of all varieties, including the canned ones.

the age of 65 with prediabetes, meaning they have high blood glucose levels and run the risk of developing diabetes in the future. Another, statistically identical group was not given the sardines, and based on the results, researchers were able to confirm that the sardine-rich diet was instrumental in preventing the former group from developing diabetes.

Canned or not, sardines are an incredible source of nutrients like vitamin A, D, and B12, as well as minerals like iodine, selenium, phosphorus, and

taurine. Not to mention their richness in omega 3 fatty acids, which are key in warding off cardiovascular disease and keeping healthy cholesterol levels.

One of the reasons that canned sardines are so nutritious is that they can be eaten whole, skeletons and all. Sardine skeletons are rich in the aforementioned nutrients as well as calcium. Additionally, the canning process - for which aluminium is typically used - helps preserve the fish’s nutrients in ways that other preservation methods do not.

WE‘RE used to seeing badges on cars, and know the desirable ones, the ones we like, the ones we don’t like, but how much do you know about the history behind the badge? They all have a history and some are more interesting than others and Audi is an especially involving story.

August Horch took his first job in the industry courtesy of Karl Benz, who hired him to manage his factory in Mannheim. After three years of learning under Benz, Horch decided the time was right to strike out on his own and founded Horch & Cie Motorwagenwerke in 1899.

Initially making two-cylinder and later four-cylinder cars, Horch left the company in 1909 after a difference of opinion with the company’s board and founded a new

car company in the same the year. He couldn’t use the Horch name so translated his name into Latin, ‘Audi’. Between 1912-14 Horch’s cars gained three consecutive victories at the International Austrian Alpine rally. One of the most challenging of the time.

Wanderer originated as a bicycle repair shop then started building bicycles and then motorcycles.

Their first car in 1913 was known as Puppchen - English Moppet.

DKW was one of the lar-

gest motorcycle makers of the time. Danish founder Jorgen Skafte Rassmussen began experimenting with a steam powered automobile in 1916.

It wasn’t a success so he started working on twostroke engines. DKW became one of the most important motorcycle makers of the pre first world war period and started building cars in 1928.

They were the first company to bring cars with front wheel drive.

Global recession meant

that demand began to plummet from 1929 and companies began to experience financial problems.

The recession led to union of the four brands mentioned above, which was initiated by the State Bank of Saxony, and Auto Union AG became the second largest car maker in Germany by number of vehicles produced.

The four former companies, now merged into Auto Union, maintained their own distinct areas of expertise. DKW made motorcycles and small cars, Wanderer produced mid-size cars while Audi concentrated on deluxe mid-size cars, and Horch was the luxury car arm of the enterprise.

When Auto Union was formed in 1930 the four rings were seen as a badge for the first time.

The name Auto Union was across the four rings and later the four rings symbolised the brand we know today as Audi.
