THE first loggerhead turtle nest in the south of the Alicante province, located on the Carabassí beach in Elche, will be controlled and monitored from Saturday, September 2 by volunteers and local groups of Ecologists in Action from Elche and Santa Pola.

The volunteers will guard the nest, which will be the first to hatch in the south of the province of Alicante, 24 hours a day, in morning, afternoon and night shifts, until the moment the turtles hatch.

Turtle haven

A member of the Santa Pola group, Alberto Bernabé explained that the nest had to be moved from Santa Pola to Elche on Friday, July 14, as it was not in a safe location for the viability of laying.

In June, another turtle chose the Arenales del Sol beach, also in Elche, to lay its eggs The nest was eventually moved to the Valencian beach of El Saler for protection reasons.
