THE rehabilitation works of the old tobacco factory, ‘Las Cigarreras’, are revealing remains undiscovered until now, such as a stone fountain in the middle of a cloister and arches of the original building of the Casa de la Misericordia, as well as later remains. An air raid shelter from the Civil War was even found, of which there was no record.

The mayor, Luis Barcala, visited the works in Alicante on Thursday, July 22 accompanied by the councillors for European Projects and the Local Development Agency, Antonio Peral and Mari Carmen. “It is exciting to be able to see how this great project is taking shape and even more to see what we are finding, a heritage that is emerging which, despite the previous study, was not seen,” said the mayor.

“Extremely interesting remains from different eras have come to light thanks to the archaeological work that is being carried out,” he stated.
