THE opening ceremony of the international sailing regatta, the 420 World Championships took place on Saturday, July 22. More than 600 sailors, coaches and team members participated in the inaugural parade through the centre of Alicante.

A parade along the city’s esplanade was the place chosen for the 22 teams to gather, covering the entire seafront of the city until arriving at the Auditorio de la Concha, at which time the authorities and organisers welcomed the par­ ticipants, and the 420 World Championship was officially inaugurated, which will be held in Alicante waters until Saturday, July 29. more details of the exhibition.

The mayor of the city, Luis Barcala, together with representatives from the council, sailing federations and other organisers and officials, opened the championships and welcomed all taking part.

The ceremony ended with the reception of the participants at the castle of Santa Barbara.

The president said that the museum is an “emblematic, loved and worked” place run by Alicante provincial council and showed his "personal satisfaction" for having made the visit.

He encouraged the public to visit the exhibition made up of more than 120 original pieces from a set that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

THE mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez, (PP) was elected on Friday, July 21, as the new president of the Provincial Council of Alicante. He was elected at the investiture and inauguration session of the 31 deputies of the institution that was held in the Provincial Palace of Alicante.

Perez achieved the command rod with the vote of the 16 PP deputies, who have an absolute majority in the chamber. The PSPV candidate, Vicente Arques, added to the 13 votes of the socialist bench.

The only representative from Compromís, Ximo Perles, voted for him, and the representative of Vox, Gema Alemán, did the same.

Perez is the first mayor of the Marina Baixa to hold this position, where he will govern with an absolute majority without the need for support from other parties.
