NERJA is playing host to an international level sporting event today, Thursday, May 18. The town’s El Desafio Nerja is now part of the prestigious World Athletics Continental Tour.
The men’s race promises an exhilarating showdown, with eyes likely to be on the formidable Fernando Carro. After intense training and preparation, Carro is said to be entering his peak form.
With his sights set on qualifying for the 3,000metre steeplechase at the Budapest World Championships in August, Carro is ready to set the track on fire. Among his rivals are Nassim Hassaous, and talented Pol Oriach from Aragón.
However, the spotlight will also shine on the Ethiopian favourites Ayalew and Beru, who boast impressive personal bests.
The women’s race showcases African stars like Senayet Getachew and Spanish talents Carolina Robles and Águeda Marqués.
The 800metre race features Gonzalo García and rising star Zoya Naumov. Mariano García, known as ‘La Moto’, takes on the 1,500 metres, facing tough competitors including Jesús Gómez and Ig nacio Fontes.
The epic rivalry between Esther Guerrero and Marta Pérez will also return in the women’s 1,500 metres. Competition details are available online.
