In Mijas, we are proposing to spend millions on a park (€33 million to be precise), millions on car parking, but not in the tourist areas and people are concerned about safety and security. They are furious about second­hand, broken rubbish containers which look like the aftermath of a nuclear war inside, can’t get their street lighting fixed, and have a much beloved boardwalk which has had no more than essential maintenance for the last seven years. That means only fixing the bits that have collapsed due to storms.

But let me pose a scenario. I have a hotel (I don’t, by the way). I head off to tourism fairs to promote it and get as many people as possible to choose my hotel for their holidays. But, I am so busy selling my hotel to tourists that I don’t take the time to look after it, and when the guests arrive, their rooms are not clean or ready for habitation.
