Although our mayor and other dignitaries were pre sent there were no presenta tions, just the cutting of the official ribbon amidst an inter esting mix of people from our community, all brought to gether to appreciate what this new hotel complex offers and sample some of its de lights. The hotel itself is im pressive and the buffet was an extravagant display of Mediterranean cuisine, ac companied by free flowing re freshments, cocktails and much frivolity.
It was lovely to catch up with other members of the media and friends but the whole festive feeling disap peared instantaneously for me when my EWN colleague Sally told me that the news had been confirmed: Her Royal Highness Queen Eliza beth II had passed away.
I’m not alone in say ing that I was completely tak en aback at just how upset I was; tears sprouting from nowhere, right there in the middle of the party, over whelmed by a feeling of loss and perhaps even uncertain ty. No one is like our Queen or ever could be; no one has her experience, her insight, her dignity and her compo sure, even when against all the odds. She has been a bea con of reference and instilled in us a sense of duty, respon sibility and the benefits of keeping a stiff upper lip. She was the embodiment of what it means to be British. Most of us have known the

The percentage increase that pensioners can expect to re ceive in April of next year will, in theory, be based on UK in flation and should reflect the standing of this September’s Consumer Price Index which is expected to be in excess of 10 per Problemcent.is of course that it was exceptionally suspended last year in order to help Britain recover some of its pandem ic spend and it is suggested that Liz Truss’s economic advi sors are convinced that she simply can’t afford to allow it to be reinstated now to benefit pensioners in 2023/24.
