The speech she made on her 21st birthday now takes on even more significance; now we can fully appreciate how passionately she has kept her word and upheld that promise to dedicate her whole life, whether it be long or short, to serve ‘her people’. She could have chosen to sit back and enjoy the luxuries of wealth and worked a couple of days a week, month or year; but her holidays were

Although our mayor and other dignitaries were pre sent there were no presenta tions, just the cutting of the official ribbon amidst an inter esting mix of people from our community, all brought to gether to appreciate what this new hotel complex offers and sample some of its de lights. The hotel itself is im pressive and the buffet was an extravagant display of Mediterranean cuisine, ac companied by free flowing re freshments, cocktails and much frivolity.
It was lovely to catch up with other members of the media and friends but the whole festive feeling disap peared instantaneously for me when my EWN colleague Sally told me that the news had been confirmed: Her Royal Highness Queen Eliza beth II had passed away.

I’m not alone in say ing that I was completely tak en aback at just how upset I was; tears sprouting from nowhere, right there in the middle of the party, over whelmed by a feeling of loss and perhaps even uncertain ty. No one is like our Queen or ever could be; no one has her experience, her insight, her dignity and her compo sure, even when against all the odds. She has been a bea con of reference and instilled in us a sense of duty, respon sibility and the benefits of keeping a stiff upper lip. She was the embodiment of what it means to be British. My grandmother loved the Queen and the Royal Family; I grew up doing the same. We are still mourning the loss of dear Lilibet, but in her honour we must keep that stiff upper lip, have a nice cup of tea (makes everything better) and say: long live the King.

This means borrowing and spending more but for pen sioners, especially those in Spain who haven’t benefited from the energy support, the matter of the triple lock promise is looming in many minds.
So, with the WASPI women still receiving no compensa tion from the lack of advance notice of the increase in pen sion age from the Department and Works and Pensions as confirmed by the Ombudsman and now the threat of no triple lock safety, it rather looks as if the so-called levellingup policy is going to miss a significant percentage of the population.

The percentage increase that pensioners can expect to re ceive in April of next year will, in theory, be based on UK in flation and should reflect the standing of this September’s Consumer Price Index which is expected to be in excess of 10 per Problemcent.is of course that it was exceptionally suspended last year in order to help Britain recover some of its pandem ic spend and it is suggested that Liz Truss’s economic advi sors are convinced that she simply can’t afford to allow it to be reinstated now to benefit pensioners in 2023/24.

I have always felt that the meagre efforts made by councils to help the International Community integrate was a bit on the pathetic side. Give them the odd Flamenco show and turn up at some of their events for a photo.
WHAT does a councillor in opposi tion do? Basically, anything they want. In fact, for the party or par ties in government, the less they do, the better. You need to under stand, that in a council there is no sense of the entire number of councillors working together for a common good. In Mijas, we have 25, for example, with two parties forming the 13 majority govern ment.Ihave never before been paid from the public purse, albeit on a 50 per cent salary, but I worked for years in the UK with those who had lived most of their lives from the public purse: the career politicians. I decided very early on that I had to focus my attention on something, or ‘someones’ to justify my exis tence.InMijas, one third of the 90,000

OK, we do have a Foreigners’ De partment who in fairness do a solid job in helping with paperwork and often go above and beyond, but in the main, the councillors who hold the reins do very little to facilitate realTheyintegration.stillcall us ‘the Foreigners’ for goodness sake, even though some have lived here longer than some councillors have been alive .
