FIRE WARNING

ANOTHER large blaze broke out on the Costa del Sol in the early hours of Tuesday, June 28 in the hills of Mijas leaving hous‐ es evacuated and concern among residents.

Forty professionals came out to battle the scrubland fire in the Paraje Atalaya area, which spread rapidly with the flames being fanned by strong winds.

After being announced just after midnight, the fire was extinguished at 8.30pm and left around 2,000 people evacuated.

the Costa del Sol after one in the Pujerra started on June 8 and burned a huge area of more than 4,800 hectares.

Spain’s hot, dry sum‐ mers make wildfires one

of the biggest natural risks at this time of year. Last year saw one of the worst fires in the Costa del Sols history when a blaze in the Sierra Bermeja burned for 46 days and destroyed

10,000 hectares of wild land.

To help prevent similar tragedy this year, the Euro Weekly News is calling on both locals and visitors to stay vigilant, follow all lo‐ cal fire prevention laws, and call in any suspicious fires they see to the local authorities on 112.

Join AREME Estepona FOREIGN residents of Es‐ tepona are represented by AREME (Foreign Residents Association of Estepona) and the Council Foreigners Department.

In 2013 the association was created before reform‐ ing in 2018 with a new con‐ stitution and was registered as a charity.

It acts as a conduit to fun‐ nel complaints and sugges‐ tions from foreign residents to the local council and is now looking for more members as the more there are, the more ‘clout’ it will have with officials.

MIJAS Local Police will be on their bikes this summer to ensure the safety and well‐being of residents and visitors enjoying the Mijas coastline.

This unit, created every summer, runs from 11am to 7pm each day and will be a supplement to the ex‐ isting drone and lifeguard services which are already in place.

In addition, it is trying to obtain free bus passes throughout the municipali‐ ty for residents and to en‐ courage the council to not only repaint all pedestrian crossings, but to pass a local bylaw to stop vehicles park‐ ing within five metres of all crossings.

ALHAURIN GOLF: More than 100 guests enjoyed the musical evening.

THE TAPAS Choir recently hosted a Summer Spectacular for 100 guests at Alhaurin Golf.

Food was available from the club’s kitchen during the early part of the evening and the bar was open for every‐ one to enjoy throughout.

TAPAS’s major goal to sup‐ port charities was fulfilled by collecting in excess of €500 for this year’s organisations, Cen‐

tro Fahala and Ukraine Aid. A number of musical per‐ formances were enjoyed by the guests and those taking part included Deja Vu, a com‐ bo of electric guitars and vo‐ cals echoing the sound of the 60s, who were followed by the Coro LGTBI TORREMOLI‐ NOS; an all‐male group singing popular Spanish songs under the baton of James Burn.

LISA MORGAN’S dad spent the last 16 years bat‐ tling cancer (leukaemia, bladder and skin kind), but last year he was diagnosed with colon cancer too.

This was the moment in which Cudeca stepped in to help him and the family, with him losing his fight against his illness last April.

Since then, Lisa who lives in Benalmadena de‐ cided to do something special in memory of her dad to say thank you to Cudeca for all their sup‐ port and especially the medical support in the fi‐ nal days.

Discovering Sierra Bermeja AFTER the area of the Sierra Bermeja hit the headlines last year with the massive fire, Es‐ tepona Council has been working hard to prepare an exhibit to explain the geography and history of the area.

It has now opened a new display area in the facilities of the Paleonto‐ logical Museum, located in the Estepona Bullring.

In the new space, a se‐ ries of showcases have been installed with an interesting sample of rocks and minerals from Sierra Bermeja, which are presented in an edu‐ cational way so that the visitor appreciates the geological wealth of this unique natural area.

Visitors can also see materials associated with the different stages of the Earth’s geological history, as well as repre‐ sentative fossils of the different eras.

In addition, two large‐ format panels have been placed showing the char‐ acteristics that make Sierra Bermeja unique, especially the presence of peridotite, one of the rarest rocks in the world.

With no spare money during the lockdown, the owners of the farm had bits of fencing laying around and for something to do decided to make up some areas to make their animals more comfortable.

Rotary Club president WILLEM FALTER will be the first Dutch president of the 14 nationality Rotary Club Marbella‐Guadalmina.

He assumes this role on July 1 bringing with him a wealth of business experi‐ ence along with a deep pas‐ sion for the environment.

The Rotary name was born from this, and over time the organisation’s vi‐ sion and reach gradually ex‐ tended to humanitarian ser‐ vice. Chartered in December 2010, RC Marbella‐ Guadalmina was the first En‐ glish‐speaking international Rotary Club on the Costa del Sol. Willem created the Am‐ bassador Club to EndPlastic‐ Soup of the Costa del Sol. Through this initiative its first plastic collecting fish sculpture was installed on Playa Royal Calahonda in Mijas Costa in February 2022, with more planned for other locations along the Costa del Sol in the

Pool opens to the public THE swimming pool in the Santo Tomas de Aquino sports centre in Estepona has been opened to the pub‐ lic. Estepona City Council informed the public in a tweet on Monday, June 27, that the municipal swim‐ ming pool located in the sports centre has now opened to the public.

This facility, which will remain open until September 11, will open from Monday to Friday, from 1pm to 6pm, and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from 11am to 8pm. It will close on July 10 and 16, coinciding with the Sunday of Estepona Fair and the festivities in honour of the Virgen del Carmen.

There will be two lifeguards on each shift who will ensure the well‐being of bathers, as well as the quality and condition of the water.

Torremolinos hotel boost ACCORDING to data col‐ lected by Aechos, the Asso‐ ciation of Hotel Business‐ men of the Costa del Sol, the resort of Torremolinos has hotel occupancy for the rest of June that exceeds 95 per cent. This was reported on, Thursday, June 23, by Torre‐ molinos Council.

THE Malaga Provincial Council will spend €3.3 million on aid to small towns during 2022 in or‐ der to support associations involved with citizen service projects.

Beaches shut THE council of the resort of Benalmadena discour‐ aged bathers from using beaches affected by a re‐ cent sewage leak.

Encarnacion Cortes, the councillor for Beaches for Benalmadena, reported on Thursday, June 23, on the analyses carried out in the waters of the beaches affected by a fractured sewage pipe on Monday, June 20.

A breakage in an Acosol pipe led to the possibility of contamination on sev‐ eral of the resort’s beach‐ es. As a result, they were officially closed off to bathers.

After the samples were sent to be analysed, the town council advised the public against bathing on the affected beaches until the complete results were obtained on June 27.

Ms Cortes stressed that: “from the moment the town touncil became aware of the spill on the morning of June 20, as a precautionary measure to protect health, it has kept the beaches closed to bathing.”

The area in which the Costa del Sol Health Dis‐ trict did not recommend bathing is the one located between the beaches of Arroyo de la Miel and Malapesquera.

Acosol has since com‐ pleted the repair of the broken pipe.

SIMPLY THRIVING GROUP held a very popular event last Thursday at the Miraflores Golf Club where they enjoyed the entertainment provided by the very talented trib‐ ute group The Jersey Boys. The group were received with great en‐ thusiasm by more than 70 mem‐ bers and also many golfers who joined in the fun and the dancing.

Simply Thriving are the same group that was set up when the pandemic began, to help business‐ es survive, and went on to help a different charity each month culmi‐ nating in providing over €30,000 in just over a year for various charities.

Mijas on the market M A R K E T pitches are available in Mijas, for street vendors who might be interest‐ ed.

Veronica Ensberg, the Mijas councillor for Markets, announced on Tuesday, June 21, that 19 positions are available at the Las Lagunas and La Cala markets.

“Twelve stalls are offered for the Las Lagunas market which takes place on Sat‐ urdays at the fairgrounds. Six more stalls for used items are available in the mar‐ ket held on the San Rafael de Las Lagunas industrial estate, and one stall for the La Cala de Mijas market, which is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays,” she indicat‐ ed.

The deadline for street vendors to ap‐ ply is July 29, while the deadline for sec‐ ond‐hand market stalls is July 17. To ap‐ ply for these positions, those interested must meet a series of requirements and should present the application to the Of‐ ficial Gazette of the Province, or in the Markets section of the municipal website mijas.es.

Safer beaches VISITORS to the beaches of Torremolinos this summer will be safer thanks to the ap‐ pointment of 15 beach assis‐ tants who are reinforcing the surveillance service on the beaches during the four months of high season.

They are not lifeguards but act as security support which is important according to local mayor, Margarita del Cid as “this year is especially impor‐ tant due to the large influx of tourists that, fortunately, we expect after two years of pan‐ demic.”

The security assistants will

monitor the beaches from noon to 8pm both on foot and by bicycle, in addition to a special section consisting of an officer and three Local Police officers with their vehicles dedicated to beach security, giving support to the auxil‐ iaries.

This year, for the first time, there is a single communica‐ tion network between Local Police, security assistants and lifeguards, which will facilitate coordinated and faster inter‐ vention between the beach, security and lifeguard ser‐ vices.

Reusable cloth bags THE Fuengirola Council is distributing more than 4,000 reusable cloth bags among the residents and merchants of the municipality.

This is part of an awareness campaign for the reduction of plastic, promoted to‐ gether with Ecoembes and the Associa‐ tion of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol on the occasion of the In‐ ternational Day Free of Plastic Bags that is celebrated on July 3.

Boliches, Rosa Ana Bravo, were out on Tuesday June 28 distributing these items at the Los Boliches Market.

Councillor Carrasco said “plastic is something that we have to put aside and above all, plastic bags that are not com‐ postable, since January 1, 2020 there is a regulation that prohibits its use.

“Therefore, we are also delivering this regulation to all establishments, so that they are aware that they can start using these cloth bags instead, which do not pollute and are reusable.”

Potential dive site WITH the support of all political parties in Mar‐ bella, the Option Sampedreña (OSP) pro‐ posed on Thursday June 23 that action be taken to investigate and pro‐ tect the sunken wreck off the beach of San Pe‐ dro Alcantara.

It is believed that the vessel is of French origin and may be the Made‐ laine which sunk in 1705

during the war of Span‐ ish succession and the capture of Gibraltar.

An alternative view however suggests that it could be a Spanish ves‐ sel that sank off the coast in 1770.

It is believed that this wreck should be proper‐ ly investigated, with any items of archaeological importance removed and placed on public dis‐

play and then the wreck could become an impor‐ tant dive site for visiting scuba enthusiasts.

Prior to this however, earlier visits to the wreck have found it to be suffering from the ef‐ fects of time, water and worms, so it would have to be checked in order to ensure that it was safe for regular visits by divers.

ON Tuesday, June 28, Mar‐ bella City Council joined the celebration of International LGTBI Pride Day with the reading of a manifesto by Francis Guzman, owner of ‘La Polaca’. It took place in Parque de los Tres Jardines de San Pedro Alcantara, and was attended by the mayor, Angeles Muñoz, and other members of the mu‐ nicipal body.

“It is a very important day for the city, in which we de‐ fend diversity as a just claim in which we are all united,” the councillor stated.

Guzman pointed out in his speech that “visibility is a very powerful attitude that must be present, not only personally, but also in‐ stitutionally, in the public positioning of a municipali‐ ty that continues to cham‐ pion itself as an example of coexistence, inclusion, sexu‐ al diversity and self‐identi‐ ty; a safe, modern, open and respectful city, with all forms of love.”

San Juan fire WHILST the bonfires on the night of San Juan, Thursday June 23 were well controlled in Marbella and areas such as Cable Beach were cleaned and restored to normality overnight, there was one notable accident.

On the Playa las Chapas things got out of hand and some eight beach umbrellas which had metal frames but toppings made from palm leaves alongside 40 tumbonas (beach bed chairs) caught fire and were destroyed with an estimated loss of €5,000 to the owners.

It would appear that sparks from an adjacent bonfire set‐ tled onto the umbrellas which in turn set fire to the beds.

Torremolinos registration opens THE Sports delegation of Torremolinos Town Hall announced on Friday, June 24, that the registration period for new users of the different sports activities in the mu‐ nicipality opened on Monday, June 27.

He had already served five years of his sentence and still had another five remaining.

The 28‐year‐old detainee has been placed at the dis‐ posal of the Central Court of Instruction No5 of the Na‐ tional Court, as reported by local news sources.

Speaking exclusively to Euro Weekly News, Mr Wright explained that Eduardo’s was a tribute to his dad, who passed away last year.

“This is a personal thing [opening Eduar‐ do’s] for me to do since my father passed away last year,” he explained.

“A couple of years ago, pre‐pan‐ demic, I actually said to my dad that I was ready to open up, that I wanted to open up another Olivia’s.”

by Elliot’s father and the 42‐year‐old pitched him the idea of knocking the ‘restaurants together on the Plaza’ so it ‘would be big enough for Olivia’s.’

He added: “If there was anything I could do for my dad then to prolong his lega‐ cy [this was it]. This is his legacy.”

A EURO WEEKLY NEWS’ campaign to improve the rights of disabled UK na‐ tionals has reached its first milestone after 500 people signed in just over a week.

Announced on Thursday, June 16, the My Blue Badge = My Freedom campaign aims to push the UK and Spanish governments to work together to allow dis‐ abled UK tourists to be able to use their Blue Badges while on holiday in Spain.

The campaign is also pushing for a compassion‐ ate solution to help UK resi‐ dents in Spain who may have left it too late to apply for their Spanish disabled badge and are now unable to park accessibly after many areas of Spain stopped recognising UK

The EWN knows that many of those people did not apply earlier because they found the process daunting and we are push‐ ing the Spanish and UK gov‐ ernments to work together to allow a grace period where residents can still use their UK badge while apply‐ ing for the Spanish one.

We also know that many Brits who spend up to 90 days in Spain are also af‐ fected by the inability to use their UK badge any‐ more and we are seeking a political solution to this too.

One reader, Cedric Metliss from Fuengirola, got

in touch with the EWN to highlight his own issues get‐ ting a disabled badge in Spain, echoing the concerns of many other readers.

He said: “As a follow up to your excellent support for Blue Badge holders from the UK using their badges here in Spain, we have ex‐ perienced over many years the difficulty of obtaining a blue badge here in Spain, in spite of my wife being awarded a UK badge since before moving here in 2002.

“Following an almost fa‐ tal road accident in 2001 in the UK, my wife was issued with a Blue Badge and after

settling here in Fuengirola in 2002, she looked into ap‐ plying for a Spanish badge, but was advised that she should wait for permanent residence before doing so.

“With the help of Fuenso‐ cial and after having her medical records expensively translated, her first applica‐ tion was submitted but was rejected by the Diputacion in Malaga as not being suffi‐ ciently incapacitated.

“Sadly she then had to re‐ turn to the UK to care for her dying parents, but was able to renew her UK badge which expired in 2018.

“Following her return, she reapplied in 2015 but

was rejected again and again in 2018 and again in 2020 despite never having had a further medical exam and with letters of support from her local doctor, lawyer and health worker.

We are currently applying again as she is now virtually wheelchair bound and, at 77, I am finding it harder to get her in and out of the car where there is little space to park.

“Since Brexit the attitude of many Spanish adminis‐ trators has hardened to‐ wards all Brits, even those of us who chose to make Spain our home many years

Ryanair strike illegal A SCHEDULED strike by Ryanair cabin crew start‐ ed on Friday, June 24, but went largely unno‐ ticed in Spain. The rea‐ son behind this is that the Spanish government had acted in advance of the action, and declared it illegal for staff to go on strike, media reports said.

Union bosses were of course upset by this move, but it meant that customers of the budget airline were still able to fly.

Speaking on June 24, Ester Peyro, the spokes‐ woman for USO, Syndi‐ cated Workers Union ac‐ cused the airline of acting illegally.

“We believe stoppages are not going to have a great follow‐up and that the impact will be mini‐ mal,” predicted Eddie Wilson, the Ryanair CEO on Thursday, June 23.

“Even if cabin crew are going to go on strike,

they have to operate those flights by law,” he pointed out, in reference to the protected flights.

Late on Thursday, June 23, after being sent a list of the flights that the air‐ line intended to operate,

Ryanair was informed in writing by both the USO and Sitcpla unions that they were allegedly in breach of the ‘minimum services’ decree from the Spanish Ministry of Transport.

MADRID says NO THOUSANDS joined in a peaceful protest in Madrid on Sunday, June 26, the In‐ ternational Network No to NATO announced on Twit‐ ter.

The protest was against a NATO summit which was to take place in the Spanish capital.

Amid tight security, lead‐ ers of the member coun‐ tries were to meet in Madrid between June 29‐ 30 as the organisation faces

the unprecedented chal‐ lenge of the Russian inva‐ sion of Ukraine.

NATO is expected to con‐ sider the bid, opposed by al‐ liance‐member Turkey, for Finland and Sweden to join.

The protest was joined by the group Parla Obrera y Popular (POP) which is an assembly movement for the defence of the public, made up of people from Madrid to defend and fight for the town.

As a self‐proclaimed coffee lover, I went along with great interest to see what Coffee King was all about.

On arrival we were shown into the ‘Coffee King academy.’ This is where they will show‐ case their machines and products along with training your staff how to serve the perfect cof‐ fee.

The coffee was very smooth indeed, almost a luxurious taste. So the plan is to introduce Coffee King to our many bars and restaurants here on the Costa. The coffee is available in beans and pods, all sustainable along with sus‐ tainable straws for hot and cold coffee drinks.

I met with founder and entrepreneur Sean Latisse and his son Cain, who are very excited about bringing Coffee King to Spain. Sean is ex‐ tremely passionate about his coffee and feels now is the time to expand into Europe.

Cain explained how Coffee King has gone from strength to strength over the last six years in the UK, and he too is excited about bringing it to Spain.

Where next I asked? He suggested Sean will take it worldwide, so watch this space.

Sadly though these accidents still happen and many can be prevented.

This guide is for those on holidays and those that live here and just to increase wa‐ ter safety.

1. Disposable nappies are designed to contain liquid, therefore will weigh a baby or toddler down in the water, thus decreasing their chances of being able to float naturally.

There are alternatives pants for babies and toddlers while swimming. Please please don’t leave toddlers in dispos‐

able nappies while at the pool.

2. Arm bands and rubber rings do not mean your child is safe! Also suncream can make these slippery. Teach your kids to swim at the earliest time possible.

3. Can you swim? What happens if you cannot swim and your child gets into diffi‐ culty in the water?

4. Teach your kids about the dangers surrounding wa‐ ter.

5. On balconies and ter‐ races, ensure there is nothing for toddlers and young chil‐ dren to climb on to, to help them get access to the pool.

6. The emergency number here in Spain is 112 (ambu‐ lance, fire brigade, police).

7. If you have small children and a private pool, get a fence.

Cala Mijas Festival THE Costa del Sol is the musical centre of Spain this year, with interna‐ tional headline acts ap‐ pearing from Gibraltar to Malaga City and beyond during 2022.

The latest event to con‐ firm the entirety of its line‐up is the newly inau‐ gurated Cala Mijas 2022 festival which takes place on September 1, 2 and 3.

ferent areas.

The organisers are working together with the Mijas Town Hall to create roads and paths to facilitate mobility and will provide three parking ar‐ eas for 5,000 vehicles and motorbikes.

Love to Sing THE Love to Sing Choir will be raising money for the elderly of Casares on Friday July 8 at the Duquesa Golf Club.

Each year the choir chooses a different charity to support with their Summer BBQ Char‐ ity Fundraiser and this year it’s the turn of the Botika Centro Cognitivo in Casares, a charitable organisation dedicated to health education in the community and so‐ cial health care for the elderly.

There will be live per‐ formances from the choir as well as up and coming local musician Sami James who has been making a name for himself as an indie/folk singer/songwriter, both individually and as a member of various bands on the Costa del Sol including the popu‐ lar Rabbit Holes.

Also appearing will be Estepona’s American Rock Star, Danny Vaughn, the lead singer with Tyketto who have released nine albums over the years and are still going strong, after forming in 1989.

Danny has also re‐ leased a number of solo albums and guested on numerous releases with other bands and singers, but for this event he will be playing acoustic gui‐ tar and selecting a num‐ ber of very popular songs.

THIS WEEK out perhaps a percolator ‘treat’, but in com‐ parison it really did taste like dishwater so ignorance isn’t always bliss. In Spain, howev‐ er, no matter where you

went the coffee was not just full of taste but oozing charac‐ ter and ritual, which is what I most love.

Nowadays coffee prepara‐ tion has risen to even another level with restaurants and bars actively seeking ‘baristas’ to ensure the quality and vari‐ ety of the coffee drinks served. The word ‘barista’ is Italian and means bartender but internationally has be‐ come synonymous with those skilled in preparing bev‐ erages made from coffee.

A good barista needs to be artistic in the preparation, decoration and serving of the drink to the customer, with extensive knowledge of the different types of bean avail‐ able from around the world.

I would never have thought that being a barista could be a career option but it would seem it’s a good one. I just took a quick look online and there are at least 27 rep‐

He’s also a scientist, inventor, movie maker, pilot, vegan and self‐proclaimed ‘thinker in motion and full‐time ob‐ server.’ I think you’ll find him equally as inspiring as I do.

In the same show you can also meet Joe Canales of the Tiny Dog Hotel; one of the most highly recommended in our community. Unfortunate‐ ly, due to the set format I couldn’t also interview his childhood sweetheart and partner at the hotel, An‐

toinette, at the same time; which was a great shame as their chemistry and contin‐ ued love story is truly encour‐ aging.

Bring me sunshine Peter McLaren‐Kennedy S P A N I S H brewer Cruz‐ campo has said it will bring sunshine into its beer after it was given the go‐ahead to build a solar thermal plant adjacent to its existing factory, which will allow it to brew its beer using solar energy.

The Sevilla City Council statement on Friday June 24 said that approval had been granted to

Heineken, who own Cruz‐ campo, to build the plant on the grounds of the La Caridad estate in the Tor‐ reblanca neighbourhood.

The 100 per cent re‐ newable solar thermal energy generation plant will be used solely for consumption by the fac‐ tory in the brewing of its beer. That will according to company sources lead to a reduction of more

than 60 per cent in the company’s fossil fuel gas consumption, a reduction of 7,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

The project is part of Heineken’s strategy of be‐ ing the first brewery in Spain to have zero‐emis‐ sion in its production pro‐ cess by 2025, some five years ahead of the rest of the group’s international business.

Spain EU boost BRUSSELS has given the green light to the latest recovery fund for Spain, with the nation set to receive a whopping €12 bilion.

The funding still has to be approved

by EU member states within the next four weeks for it to be officially con‐ firmed.

Previously Spain received €9 billion and €10 billion at the end of 2021.

The approval and arrival of the current funds would put Spain’s recovery fund

figures at an incredible €31 billion, which totals almost half of the €69.525 billion in the EU’s recovery fund.

Spain submitted a payment request to the EU Commission in which they “pro‐ vided detailed and comprehensive evi‐ dence demonstrating compliance with the 40 milestones and targets,” the Commission said. Spain has also con‐ firmed that “the measures related to the previously satisfactorily met milestones and targets have not been reversed.”

Heroic Spaniard SPAIN’S Andrea Fuente had to perform a dramat‐ ic rescue at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest after Ameri‐ can synchronised swim‐ mer Anita Álvarez lost consciousness in the pool.

Coach Andrea Fuentes, a four‐time Olympic medallist for Spain in syn‐ chronised swimming, jumped into the pool af‐

ter she saw Anita Álvarez sink to the bottom at the end of her solo free final routine on Wednesday, June 22. Álvarez’s coach was forced to jump into the water after it was re‐ vealed that current Inter‐ national Swimming Feder‐ ation (FINA) regulations prevent the intervention of lifeguards without a signal from a referee.

The Spaniard, who said that 25‐year‐old Álvarez had stopped breathing, complained about the rules to Spanish radio fol‐ lowing the incident.

“It felt like a whole hour [for lifeguards to react]. I said things weren’t right, I was shouting at the life‐ guards to get into the wa‐ ter, but they didn’t catch what I said or they didn’t understand,” she said.

Amazon Spanish plans FRED PATTJE, the director of Amazon Customer Fulfillment in France, Italy and Spain, announced on Thursday, June 23, the company’s intention to cre‐ ate 2,000 new permanent jobs in Spain throughout 2022. As a result, Amazon would have a total workforce of 20,000 permanent employees in the country.

“At Amazon, we offer all kinds of jobs, for all kinds of people. In the last two years we have created an average of more than 100 permanent jobs a week across the country, all of them with a competitive salary, and a com‐

plete package of benefits,” he pointed out.

People of all kinds of profiles and ed‐ ucational levels are currently being hired by the e‐commerce giant. These include more than 500 positions in tech‐ nology positions, as well as cloud ex‐ perts and solution architects for Ama‐ zon Web Services.

Amazon has a logistics network of more than 30 centres in Spain, and its latest recruitment would see them be‐ come one of the 10 largest employers in Spain.

SHORTAGE: Lack of tennis balls has hit Wimbledon.

WIMBLEDON 2022 has been hit by a ball shortage with a lack of stock just days before the tournament was due to start. In a report by a UK news source on Saturday, June 25, clubs say it could be a case of love, set and no match with

the shortage of balls likely to be pushed further, with Wim‐ bledon typically resulting in many more taking up the sport. Wimbledon uses more than 50,000 tennis balls each year with balls regularly changed during matches to maintain the standard of the game. Suppliers of tennis balls say that supply chain issues and factory closures due to pandemic lockdowns in China have resulted in production falling well short of normal volumes.

Louise Price, who runs the only tennis ball manufacturer in the UK, Price of Bath, said that they have seen sales jump by more than a third due to the shortage as former customers return.

She said: “A number of brands… have started coming back to us or coming back for a stop‐gap order because their deliveries are delayed.”

Peter McLaren‐Kennedy JOHNNY DEPP who met Freddie Mercury, the bad‐ ger, has now agreed to be the patron of Folly Wildlife Rescue in Kent.

Depp posted the news on social media on Satur‐ day, June 25 after he was introduced to Freddie and the rescue centre by Jeff Beck.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 59, had vis‐ ited Folly Wildlife Rescue in Kent, which Jeff is already a patron of, earlier in the month, where he was pic‐ tured cuddling a badger cub. UK WOKENESS: £60,000 (€70,000) of taxpayers’ money is being spent on researching if Punch and Judy are racist, me‐ dia sources confirmed on Sunday, June 26.

X-Factor twist AFTER taking a five‐year break it has been confirmed that X‐Factor is set to return to our screens according to a London publica‐ tion on Sunday, July 26.

A source said that 62‐year‐old Simon Cowell has decided that ‘the time is right to give the talent show a second lease of life’ and he is hoping that the show will return to the Saturday night TV schedule next year.

It’s reported Simon has struck a deal with a production company to bring the much‐ loved singing competition back to our tele‐ vision screens in the UK. Uncertain times AN influential report released by auditors KPMG sug‐ gests that the UK could be headed for a recession, with the combination of global factors and efforts to curb inflation likely to drag the economy down.

The report released on Monday, June 27 warned that: “The UK economy faces a number of global and domestic risks.

“These could lead to a significant deceleration in economic growth and potentially to a mild reces‐ sion.

“The cost of living crisis and the rising tax burden has led to a fall in consumer confidence which is set to drag on discretionary spending.”

There is good news in the report which suggests that employment will rise over the next year, but real wages are set to suffer. It says that whilst pay may continue to rise there is uncertainty around this is‐ sue, with wages in real terms set to fall.

The report goes on to say that these are uncertain times in which pretty much anything can happen and it is difficult to forecast what might happen in the re‐ cruitment market.

Rwanda prepares were taking steps to prepare for children coming under the UK’s Rwanda asylum plan, telling journal‐ ists: “We are ready to handle people from any age.”

The government has said that no unaccompa‐ nied children would be sent to the Rwandan capital but insisted it was right to “prepare for all eventuali‐

Shorts banned WYMONDHAM High Acade‐ my Secondary School in Nor‐ folk, England, has updated its dress code to allow boys to wear skirts, but they are banned from wearing shorts it was confirmed on Monday, June 27.

The secondary school has brought out a gender‐neutral dress code allowing pupils to decide between skirts and trousers, but has a ban on shorts according to one publi‐ cation.

The school insists it is very proud of its new policy for uni‐ forms which will be introduced in September following consul‐ tation with parents.

Parents of children at the school have previously called for a relaxation of the uniform rules to allow pupils to wear shorts instead on hot days dur‐ ing the summer.

Jonathan Rockey, the head‐ teacher of the 1,705‐pupil school, defended the new poli‐ cy “as something we are very proud of’ and insisted it flowed from a consultation with pupils’ families.

Vaccine rule scrapped THE Health Minister of Aus‐ tria announced on Thursday, June 23 that mandatory Covid vaccines will be scrapped in the country.

Speaking at a press confer‐ ence in Vienna, Austria’s Health Minister Johannes Rauch said: “We now have to live with Covid, so we are going to implement a series of measures, which means the end of mandatory vac‐ cines.

Anne Frank gained fame for her diary that she wrote hidden away with her fami‐ ly in her father Otto’s workplace in Amster‐ dam during the Second World War. The di‐ ary was given to her as a present on her 13th birthday.

Amsterdam café ban FEMKE HALSEMA, Amster‐ dam’s mayor has told MPs that tourists are to be banned from the city’s cannabis cafes in an effort to reduce crime.

The announcement was made ahead of a debate on Wednesday, June 29 to dis‐ cuss the growing crime problem.

Halsema said that closing the cannabis coffee shops that are involved in criminal activities is both slow, time‐ consuming and often com‐ plicated.

The belief is that closing the cannabis cafes to tourists will shrink the mar‐ ket significantly providing less opportunity for those involved in crime to contin‐

ue those activities on a large scale.

A police report which was published by the local media earlier this year pro‐ posed the temporary ban saying that the move was unavoidable.

This is not the first time that Halsema has wanted to target visitors to the city, having said in January last year that she wanted to ban non‐residents from the city’s cannabis cafes, but then she was unable to get the legislation passed.

Sign to beat all signs UNDOUBTEDLY the sign that trumps all other signs in 2022 has to be the ‘no pooping in the woods’ sign that has appeared in Riis Skov, a forest near Aarhus in Denmark.

According to a Facebook post on June 24, authorities in the town felt the need to add a human no pooping sign alongside those telling owners of horses and dogs that it is a poop‐free zone.

They are finding out, however, that the sign is of more value on people’s bedroom and

pub walls than it is effective in stopping peo‐ ple from responding to the call of nature.

As you would expect the signs have be‐ come quite the thing to have and so they are being stolen faster than they can be hung up.

Kim Gulvad from Aarhus Municipality told local media that: “It’s not a big problem yet, but we still have to screw new ones up and employ somebody to do it. A new sign only costs 45 kroner, but the man‐hours can be ex‐ pensive.”

THE Bank of England is set to with‐ draw legal tender status of paper £20 and £50 banknotes after September 30, 2022.

The Bank of England has encour‐ aged the general public to either use these banknotes or deposit them at their bank or a Post Office during these last 100 days.

The new Turing £50 banknote completed the Bank of England’s family of polymer notes, with all de‐

nominations (£5, £10, £20 and £50) now printed on polymer.

There are currently an estimated £6 billion worth of paper £20 featur‐ ing the economist Adam Smith, and over £8 billion worth of paper £50 banknotes featuring the engineers Boulton and Watt, in circulation.

The Bank of England’s estimations mean that there are currently 300 million individual £20 banknotes, and 160 million paper £50 ban‐ knotes that have not been cashed in.

Speaking on the old UK banknotes ahead of the date, the Bank of Eng‐

land’s Chief Cashier Sarah John stat‐ ed: “Changing our banknotes from paper to polymer over recent years has been an important develop‐ ment, because it makes them more difficult to counterfeit, and means they are more durable.

“The majority of paper banknotes have now been taken out of circula‐ tion, but a significant number remain in the economy, so we’re asking you to check if you have any at home.

For the next 100 days, these can still be used or deposited at your bank in the normal way.”

Italian radiators A UK company has pur‐ chased an Italian radiator company in a €28.2 million deal. On Thursday, June 23, Stelrad Group PLC an‐ nounced it had agreed to buy DL Radiators srl from De Longhi Industrial SA, as re‐ ported by the media. The ra‐ diator manufacturer started trading on London’s AIM market in November 2021, at a price of £219 each.

Water ‘bil’ SPAIN’S Aqualia, a water management company, has obtained a €1.1 billion syndi‐ cated green corporate loan.

Aqualia will use this loan to fi‐ nance eligible green projects and their activities, such as water and waste treatment, water distribution and stor‐ age, renewable energy and sustainable transport, among other projects. According to Aqualia’s finance manager, Isidoro Marbán: “this financ‐ ing provides Aqualia with great stability in its long‐term capital structure at a time when the financial markets are highly volatile.”

UAE bonds THE Federal Government of the United Arab Emirates announced plans to issue a Dual‐tranche USD Bench‐ mark Size Bonds with a 10‐ year tranche and a 30‐year Formosa tranche.The 10‐ year tranche will be listed on London Stock Exchange (LSE) and Nasdaq Dubai, and the 30‐year tranche will be listed on the aforemen‐ tioned plus Taipei Exchange.

Wirex upgrade WIREX, a leading digital pay‐ ments platform, revealed a variety of features for new and existing customers in the UK, as reported by Ya‐ hoo Finance. Wirex’s Mas‐ tercard debit card will now be available to order for UK customers, allowing them to spend a variety of currencies at over 81 million locations worldwide.

Heathrow travel increase LONDON’S Heathrow air‐ port has predicted that over 54 million people are set to travel through the UK’s biggest airport during 2022, massively increasing its pas‐ senger forecast for the year.

Heathrow airport’s fore‐ cast of 54.4 million trav‐ ellers, would mean that 67 per cent of travellers seen in 2019, would use its ter‐ minals during this year.

Following the travel re‐ strictions seen throughout the world in 2021, this fore‐ cast assumes a significant increase, with the airport only predicting 45.5 million passengers for 2022 in De‐ cember 2021.

Heathrow airport’s confi‐ dence in what they call a ‘steady traffic increase’ for this year, comes after claims that over 20.1 mil‐ lion passengers have al‐ ready travelled through their airport during the first five months of the year 2022.

“We have officially sur‐ passed the total amount of passengers seen during the whole of 2021,” Heathrow airport stated in an investor report on Thursday, June 23.

“However, the degree of uncertainty is still signifi‐ cant,” the investor report added.

Heathrow airport is cur‐ rently expecting its earn‐ ings, before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisa‐ tion to rise a whopping 257 per cent from the year 2021 to £1.37 billion with the air‐ port’s revenue currently forecast to double to an in‐ credible £2.6 billion.

The current higher ener‐

gy prices that are facing the UK are believed to help drive up its operating costs by almost half to £1.2 bil‐ lion according to forecasts.

The chief executive of London’s Heathrow airport warned it would take up to 18 months for the aviation industry to return to pre‐ pandemic levels of travel.

Hydropower investment THE UK’s development finance institu‐ tion British International Investment (BII) has pledged $200 million over the coming years to help fund hydropower projects in Africa, as reported by Engi‐ neering News.

The latest investment in African hy‐ dropower would be the biggest in BII history.

The UK’s Minister for Africa Vicky Ford stated: “Investing to bolster Africa’s hy‐ dropower sector is a strong step to‐ ward helping to meet the energy de‐ mands of three‐million people in countries most at risk to the impacts of the climate emergency. Through these projects, UK finance will enable job creation and drive clean productive growth across the continent.”

France’s June activity FRENCH manufacturers reported the first output decline since October 2021 with companies concerned about weak export orders, political uncertainty and high in‐ flation, which has led to business activity in France suffering a signif‐ icant slowdown in June.

According to a survey on business activity car‐ ried out by The Flash S&P Global composite purchasing managers’ index, France had seen a 4.2 financial decrease from 57 last month to 52.8.

Joe Hayes, an economist at S&P Global stated: “The slowing econom‐ ic trend in France is also compounded by a fresh bout of political uncer‐ tainty due to the hung parliament result in the national elections.”

Confidence drops UK business confidence has fallen sharply, raising concerns for the UK’s eco‐ nomic growth as reported by finance media.

A barometer of private sector activity known as the interim, or flash, S&P Global/CIPS UK composite purchasing managers’ in‐ dex, remained unchanged in June from the 15‐month low recorded in May at 53.1.

Business activity expec‐ tations fell following con‐ cerns about declines in cus‐ tomer spending as well as an added impact of the in‐ flation of the global econo‐ my.

The only chance they actually have of winning is to gain the votes of as many minority residents and supporters as they can garner and are now working on as large a disproportionate selection of these occupants as they can possibly encourage.

Their association with media advertising, particularly political programmes of the BBC, is enabling them to not only disregard or disapprove of all the encouraging and successful efforts the Conservative party entered into to steer the country through the last pandemic, which actually plummeted the government’s new administration and placed their immediate future on the back burners before they could properly enter into a host of new

It truly begins world enterprises. They have now stopped reporting the not terribly dangerous scandals of ‘party time’ at No 10 from all over their initially scathing media, which finally had to dry up when their own Starmer brigade was also being pursued by the police for similar activities.

They have set out to convince the UK that areas are now run by large sections of minority immigrant citizens. They are publishing strikes and union participation in their highest possible reports and political programmes. Their ads are riddled with promotion of ethnic habitats, mixed marriages and introducing large numbers of commonwealth originated reporters delivering the news.

The percentages of those featured and publicised are far less what actually reside in the UK. (Around 12 per cent over England, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). They are also highly involved in massive publicity for the Gay and transsexual related pursuits of activity and marital attractions (around 213,000 marriages in the UK.) Their PC tentacles are spreading far and wide through multitudes of UK society and new immigrants.

Nothing is actually wrong with most of these sections of Great British society. It is

the motives and intentions of the left lumping them all together which is formidable. None of these factions were wholly responsible for the wonderful and often highly successful United Kingdom.

They were initially all welcomed and encouraged by a country that was formed by the adventurers of countless historical wars and conflict. Including millions of injuries deaths from our dedicated UK ancestors participating in the First and Second World Wars.

If the left manage to encourage the majority of minorities to vote for them in the next election; and they actually win, anticipate nothing but chaos. The halls of parliament and Downing Street will be heaving with disputable factions and unions all wanting something from the country and only prepared to give upheaval and unrest in return. All I can say is thank the Lord I chose somewhere else to reside.

The cheapest areas to buy property on the Costa del Sol IF you are house hunting for a property on the Costa del Sol, you should consider that on the one hand, this is one of the areas in Spain with the most active housing markets.

On the other hand, recently this has generated a greater interest in property, meaning prices are on the rise.

In eastern Costa del Sol, the cheapest towns to buy property are Rincon de la Victoria, Torre del Mar, Velez‐ Malaga, Nerja and Torrox. The most affordable prices on the western side include Manilva, Torremolinos, Benal‐ madena, Alhaurin de la Torre and Ronda.

Per square metre in Torremolinos, the average price is around €2,800, whilst in Nerja it is around €850, and in Tor‐ rox it goes up to at least €1,000. Further out in towns like Marbella and Estpona, the price per square metre is more like €3,600.

Just because properties are cheaper in towns like this doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the magic, beauty and magnificent services which make this area of the Mediter‐ ranean so popular amongst tourists.

Even in towns where the prices are lower, residents and visitors can still enjoy the hot climate, marvellous beaches, and excellent connections to other Spanish cities. They are great places to invest in a second residence like a cheap flat.

BOTH resident and non‐ resident house sales in Spain by foreign buyers in‐ creased by 171 per cent in the first quarter of 2022, to 31,711 transactions, compared to the 18,521 recorded in the same peri‐ od of 2021, according to data on real estate trans‐ actions from the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma), as reported by Idealista.

Resident foreigner trans‐ actions amounted to 16,691, which is 35.9 per cent higher than between January and March of last year. While the sale and purchase of homes by non‐resident foreigners has risen by 140.6 per cent to 15,020 operations, up

Jellyfish stings A STING from a jellyfish can quickly turn a fun day at the beach into a miserable one. They have no interest in at‐ tacking people, but a simple touch is enough to activate their microscopic stingers, causing them to release ven‐ om.

The presence of jellyfish on beaches can be a real prob‐ lem and they are not always easy to spot. However, there are certain things you can do to minimise the risk of being stung.

Find out about the conditions of the beach and pay at‐ tention to the information provided by the warning flags and the lifeguards. A red flag, which indicates that bathing is prohibited, may be due to the excessive presence of jel‐ lyfish.

Wear sun cream. Not only is it essential for protecting you from the sun’s rays, but a waterproof sun cream will also give you a small amount of protection against acci‐ dental contact with a jellyfish.

If you see one in the water, move away slowly. Avoid disturbing the water too much, as the movement of the waves you create when swimming could bring them clos‐ er to you. If you see several at once, just get out of the wa‐ ter immediately.

Finally, avoid touching a jellyfish even if it is on the sand and looks dead and harmless. It may not be, and when you touch it or step on it, it may sting you. Also, watch out for the little ones, whose curiosity may lead them to touch a jellyfish if they find one on the sand.

Tips for rebellious hair Tamsin Brown DO you find it hard to tame your hair? Dryness and frizz can make your hair unruly and difficult to control. Here we give you a few simple tips for softer, smoother and more manageable hair.

1) Hair gets frizzy be‐ cause of a lack of mois‐ ture and natural oil on the scalp, which makes it drier and more difficult to handle. Therefore, one of the best ways to control unruly hair is to give it the moisture it needs. For example, ar‐ gan oil can provide deep hydration. Simply apply a small amount to your (damp or dry) hair a few times a week.

2) Try adding honey to your regular hair care routine. This moisturising and nutrient‐packed in‐ gredient will make your hair look much healthier and shinier. Simply add a

tablespoon of honey to a litre of water and apply it to freshly washed hair ‐ no rinsing required.

properties. Simply mix five tablespoons of aloe vera with two table‐ spoons of oil, apply it and leave it on for 30 minutes. When rinsing your hair, use cold or lukewarm water.

4) Avoid using tools such as straighteners or

hairdryers, as they dam‐ age your hair even more.

If you absolutely must use them, get a heat pro‐ tector (available in su‐ permarkets or spe‐ cialised shops) to minimise the damage. If possible, let your hair air‐dry.

Stay hydrated this summer Do not touch a jellyfish, even if it seems dead.

AS the temperatures rise, it is more crucial than ever to drink enough water and stay hydrat‐ ed. Extremely hot weather can

lead to dehydration, which can have serious consequences, especially for the elderly, chil‐ dren and those with heart

problems. Remember that be‐ ing extremely thirsty is merely a symptom of dehydration, which occurs when the body’s fluid levels become danger‐ ously low. Read on to find out more about dehydration.

Those most at risk of suffer‐ ing from dehydration are the elderly. This is because their bodies have less body fluid, their ability to detect thirst be‐ comes less sensitive and they may have decreased kidney function. Pay special attention to your elderly friends and family.

Children are at risk, as they need more water in their bod‐ ies (65 per cent of their total body weight) and younger ones may not be able to ex‐ press that they are thirsty.

People with heart failure and some other chronic dis‐ eases should avoid exercising outdoors in very hot and hu‐ mid weather. With less fluid in the body, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the system.

The most common cause of dehydration in young and mid‐ dle‐aged people caused by sweatingis due to heat and ex‐ ercise.

The initial symptoms of de‐ hydration are tiredness, dizzi‐ ness, low blood pressure and tachycardia, followed by mus‐ cle contractions or cramps. If the dehydration is not treated on time, it can lead to convul‐ sions, a coma or loss of con‐ sciousness, and, in extreme cases, death.

Protect eyes as early as three years old THE sun’s UV rays can cause serious damage to our eyes, and if ex‐ posed to it for pro‐ longed periods of time, the damage can often be irreversible. Long‐ term exposure to harmful UV rays from the sun can increase the risk of developing cataracts, age‐related macular degeneration and a common type of skin cancer called cell carcinoma in anyone, regardless of your health.

Children’s eyes let in more light than adults, due to their large pupils and clear lenses, which means that a sig‐ nificant proportion of our eyes’ lifetime expo‐ sure to UV occurs when we are young. It’s vital our eyes are protected with sunglasses, with adequate UV protec‐ tion, in order to avoid direct UV damage and

An anecdote from one of their first cus‐ tomers will explain how you can reduce your

bills with a Neater Heater. They had a customer ‐ let’s call him Geoff. Now Geoff had bought a couple of

small oil filled heaters from the ferreteria near him, but he wasn’t happy with them.

He thought they were defective as his electrics frequently tripped when he was us‐ ing them. He then called Neater Heater and told them the size of the rooms he wanted heating. Both small bedrooms at 9sqm. He was provided with two 600 watt heaters.

When fitting these heaters Tony and Richard looked at the small ferreteria‐bought heaters and saw that they were each 2,200 watts. In total 4.4 kilowatts. Geoff said that they just about took the edge off the cold.

(He also only had a 5kW allowance, so when he put the kettle on the electrics tripped).

Anyway, his bedrooms are warmer now, his electrics no longer trip, and he is saving 3.2 kilowatts every hour! In fact, possibly more as Neather Heaters have thermostats to fur‐ ther reduce consumption.

At a loss Hello, we purchased our first property in Mallorca in 1985. I cannot even imagine how much money over the years my family, friends and us have spent in the Spanish economy.

I am at a total loss as to why the Spanish are not do‐ ing all they can for home owners in their country to get this 180 days a year lift‐ ed. Thousands of properties standing idle because of this ruling, preventing millions of extra euros to the economy.

OUR VIEW YET MORE CHAOS EVERY day there seems to be news of yet another scene of chaos at an airport somewhere in Europe with flights cancelled or passengers having to queue for hours to go through check in and security.

The latest problem after lack of staff concerns strikes by flight crew of various airlines and as more people want to take advantage of the ability to travel after two years of pandemic, the worse it seems to get.

All of the big low-cost airlines shuttling holidaymakers into Spain from the UK seem to have fallen foul of this latest difficulty, although the majority of flights into and out of Gibraltar have taken place as scheduled.

According to a review undertaken by the National World website, the three most reliable airlines travelling to and from one or other of 25 airports in the UK up to the end of April were Norwegian (which was bankrupt during the pandemic and has reappeared) followed by Vueling and Aer Lingus, both of which are owned by IAG which also owns British Airways.

At the other end of the scale, the airlines who have cancelled the largest number of flights include British Airways, easyJet, TUI and WizzAir, although with planned strikes starting to affect Ryanair flights to Spain, things could get worse.

The British government appears either unable or unwilling to relax regulations concerning visas for European flight staff and even Jet2 which has also had to suspend some routes commented adversely about the unwillingness of Transport Secretary Grant Shapps to resolve the situation.

Although it may be scant consolation, the delays aren’t just affecting the UK and Spain, but many of the main European airports are also reporting significant delays.

Had a few weeks off with a bit of Covid which thankfully wasn’t too bad and basically I’ve not really been inspired to write anything. As usual Ryanair manages to piss me off. My daughter, Dr S, is a bridesmaid in Italy in July. Ryanair contacted her and said the flight was going later so she needed to travel a day earlier to get to the wedding on time. Not a big deal ….yet!

When you book with Ryanair, as soon as you complete the flying bit, you get asked if you need a hotel, rental car, travel insurance and airport parking. Sarah decided she wanted parking and added it to her flight.

Now when they changed her flight she obviously had to book an extra day for parking but to her amazement both Ryanair and the parking company said that it was impossible to amend or cancel. She said she didn’t want to cancel or get a refund, she just wanted to add one day. Ryanair was their usual bag of crap selves and not interested and the parking company at Stansted airport said they

couldn’t do anything as it was a third party booking. She got annoyed and upset and I said hand it over to me. Anyway after much toing and froing on Twitter - most big companies don’t like rows on social media with the exception of Ryanair that don’t even acknowledge the complaint or answer any email - Stansted airport found a way round the problem, I think! I’ll let you know the outcome. I asked the parking company if she had booked directly with them would we have had the same problem. They said absolutely not. They are happy to make any amendment up to 24hrs before.

The moral of the story, do not get involved with Ryanair unless you absolutely have to and book all other arrangements direct with other companies. Oh and don’t bother to tell me how great you think Ryanair is ‘cos I’m not interested. As far as I’m concerned they are the most customer unfriendly company I have ever dealt with. Monkeypox - what’s that all about? Saw a news report the other day saying that it shouldn’t be called monkeypox as it discriminatory! Who’s complained? A friggin’ monkey? I bet it was the one with the bright red arse ... I’m back!

Skoda Karoq - a bit of an automotive gem does tend to queer the pitch for all SUVs. In real‐ ity the truth is rather dif‐ ferent and while there are high powered, not so

frugal SUVs, there are plenty that easily dispel the aforementioned myth. One being Skoda’s smart and sophisticated Karoq.

It’s a medium size SUV that has all the benefits of being part of the Volk‐ swagen Audi group but some typically clever and thoughtful Skoda touch‐ es. The range starts from just €30,605/£26,255, which by today’s stan‐ dards is affordable, espe‐ cially given the standard

equipment that comes in the Karoq.

The lead‐in model comes with dual zone cli‐ mate, cruise, navigation, powered, heated, folding and dimming door mir‐ rors, rear privacy glass, LED lights, front fog lights, rear parking sen‐ sors, auto lights and wipers, lumbar support on the front seats, Apple Car Play and Android au‐ to plus Bluetooth.

Neat touches include neat brackets that attach

the rear of the front headrests to hold a tablet, portable rubbish bins in the door pockets and a secreted umbrella in case the weather catches you out. A fea‐ ture even Rolls‐Royce adopt!

With three trim levels, four engines in differing power outputs and a choice of manual or au‐ tomatic gears and all‐ wheel‐drive there’s lots of choice. My entry level SE Drive model came with the 1.0 TSi, three‐ cylinder, turbocharged engine developing 110PS. With late 40s mpg and 132 g/km emis‐ sions it does dispel the theory that all SUVs are eco‐monsters. It’s quite a feat that such a large vehicle can be success‐ fully propelled by a 1.0‐ litre engine.

Performance is ade‐

quate rather than excit‐ ing, but is well targeted and apart from the fact that you sometimes need to use the gears more it really isn’t an issue. The six‐speed manual trans‐ mission has a smooth and slick change and ev‐ erything is mechanically very refined. Ride quality and steering are good and although you would‐ n’t expect it to be as sporty as a SEAT or Audi it’s better than you might imagine.

It’s also very comfort‐ able and has a classy in‐ terior that belies the en‐ try price point. With more than enough space for family, active or oth‐ erwise, and an upmarket rather than the usual ag‐ gressive look that seems to come as standard with many SUVs, the Skoda Karoq is a bit of an auto‐ motive gem.

Another successful season THE Walking Dead complet‐ ed a successful season after winning the Hidromaster Championship and finishing runners up in the Hidromas‐ ter premiership, by beating local neighbours Malaga WFC. The game was close and ended in a 2‐2 draw, and the Calahonda based team won the trophy in a penalty shoot out.

It’s been a superb season for both clubs who have gone head to head in all competitions this year.

It’s been a very busy week for walking football on the Costa del Sol, despite the heat of the summer. The Competa three‐way tourna‐ ment between Boca Se‐ niors,Torrox Tornadoes and a very young Dutch touring football side Bekkerveld Vet‐ erans was a great success.

The results were Boca Se‐ niors 2 v Torrox Tornadoes 5, with both teams on the losing end to the young, strong team from Holland .All matches were played in a friendly spirit and after

Boca Seniors Women’s walking football team made their debut at the same

tournament, playing a friendly. The match was sup‐ ported by Competa Town Hall as part of their Cultural Week.

It was a competitive game with both sides equally matched and played in a great spirit. The final score was a 1‐1 draw. We hope this is the start of greater things. Plans are in place for matches against teams based in Murcia and Benal‐ madena in the near future.

Malaga WFC hosted a Eu‐ ropean walking football league side at the weekend.

Real Betis arrived by coach with their full entourage to play against the side based at El Cañadon in the midday sun. Malaga 60 won 1‐0 and Malaga 50 5‐2.

Both games were superb and women played in both the Malaga 60 team and the Betis team.

As the league ended, a meeting of managers was

held in Velez‐ Malaga, two new teams from Calahonda and Mijas Costa will be added to the league next season, which will be split by age 50+ and 60+ and we ex‐ pect to announce a new league sponsor shortly.
