FUN-PACKED AFTERNOON Linda Hall THE Movers And Shakers Association Costa Blanca (AMSCB) enjoyed a fun‐ packed afternoon at the Casino in Almoradi on Friday June 3.

They were celebrating the Platinum Jubilee and the room was decked with bunting, balloons and flags while guests dressed in red, white and blue.

Local guitarist Paul Harris played during the luncheon before guests were entertained by the Costa Blanca Morris Dancers.

“For many this was a complete surprise and it brought a little tradition to the occasion,” said the AMSCB president, Marion Smith.

An amazing gift Linda Hall A TWO‐YEAR‐OLD Spanish girl named Hillary is safe with her family near Totana in Murcia.

There can be little doubt that where Hillary is now ‐ regarding her location and her health ‐ is thanks to Car‐ ol Everett, who lives nearby and is a family friend.

Hillary’s parents are separated and she habitually stayed once a month with her father in Alicante, Carol explained to the Euro Weekly News. But on April 25 this year, when her grandmother went to collect her as usual, both Hillary and her father had disappeared.

As in the past, Hillary’s family turned to Carol, who is a healer and psychic. She had already made a huge dif‐ ference to Hillary who has Retts Syndrome, a rare ge‐ netic neurological and developmental disorder which usually affects females and causes a progressive loss of motor skills and language.

Carol started helping Hillary in December last year and the child’s improvement has been a huge comfort to her family while amazing her paediatrician.

So it was normal for the family to seek Carol’s assis‐ tance once more, asking her to harness her powers to locate Hillary.

“Shown her father’s photo, I immediately got bad vibes,” she said, but she also saw images of caravans and many people.

“And I couldn’t get the name of an old friend whose surname was Castillo out of my mind,” Carol told us.

She gave this information to the family who in‐ formed the police. Thankfully, they took it seriously.

So seriously, in fact, that on May 3 they found Hillary

and her father at a campsite in Castellon, the Valencian Community’s third province. He has now been deport‐ ed to Colombia on drugs charges.

Carol, an incredibly youthful 72 from Devon, has ap‐ peared on television and the radio in the UK, the US and Japan.

She was recently offered a regular programme in London. “But would I be happy there?” she asked her‐ self.

“No,” Carol told us. “I’m happy where I am, sur‐ rounded by the countryside and my flowers.”

Hillary continues to make progress and although Car‐ ol’s healing remains free, a donation site has been set up for her treatment not available in the health system.

Celebrating 13 years open PAUL CUNNINGHAM NURSES charity was found‐ ed in 2008 by Jennifer Cun‐ ningham who named the Charity after her son Paul, who died of cancer. Jen‐ nifer cared for her son for several months and was shocked to learn that there was no hospice care nursing available in Spain.

She promised Paul to do something worthwhile in his memory and she would name it after him, hence why we are called Paul Cun‐ ningham Nurses. In 2008 the charity was formed to fill this gap by supplying equipment and fully quali‐ fied Nurses (not Carers) and provide professional pallia‐ tive care in the later stages of the patient’s life. This is a totally free service.

Since then Paul Cunning‐

ham Nurses charity has helped many patients to die peacefully in their own home in the Costa Blanca South area.

We have opened three charity shops and rely sole‐ ly on the shops and dona‐ tions to fund our valuable care.

On Wednesday June 22 our shop at Quesada will celebrate being open for 13 years and we would like to invite everyone to join us.

We will have gifts, drinks and some nibbles, so please come along and help us cel‐ ebrate our amazing charity and the help we provide here in Spain.

My Blue Badge = My Freedom BREXIT may have changed many things, from voting rights to the exchange rate.

ONE of the things the UK’s departure from the European Union has not changed however is the health problems many UK nationals living abroad face daily. And nor should Brexit affect rights for the disabled.

Health is universal, unaffected by political leanings or country borders. And that is why the Euro Weekly News has put together a campaign to push the UK and Spanish governments to work together to secure the same rights for British Blue Badge holders that they had before Brexit.

Thousands of UK nationals either living in or visiting Spain had previously been able to use their blue disabled badges to park freely and accessibly due to an informal agreement between the two countries.

Since Brexit, negotiations had been ongoing between the UK and Spain over whether to continue this agreement, securing rights for some of the most vulnerable Britons living in Spain.

The British embassy in Spain told the EWN: “The mutual recognition of Blue Badges across the EU has always taken place on an informal basis at the discretion of member states. For UK Nationals resident in Spain the situation hasn’t changed as a result of Brexit.”

In September 2021 however, the UK government announced that Blue Badges would no longer be recognised across Spain, either making parking more difficult or risking fines for thousands of people.

An embassy spokesperson has now advised: “If you have a UK Blue Badge and live in Spain,

you must return it to the original UK issuing authority. You can apply for a new Spanish disabled parking card. The process is different in each region of Spain. Contact your local town hall or social services department for further information.”

For many pensioners and disabled their car is their lifeline, giving them access to shops, doctor’s visits, and all important social contact with their community however.

Cutting off this access, especially post-Covid, is making life harder for many elderly and disabled. Others, with limited access to Spanish ad-

ministrative assistance, are daunted by the prospect of now having to apply for the Spanish equivalent.

That’s why the Euro Weekly News would like you to get involved pushing the British government to work with their Spanish equivalents on a resolution.

The Alicante City&Beach Tourist Board has opened up new avenues of collabora‐ tion with professionals from the tourism sector in the French capital after a visit from the deputy mayor.

Ms Sánchez said that “French tourists represent the second most important market for Alicante, which is why it is essential to carry out actions like this one to attract conference tourism.”

ITV workshop raid AN ITV workshop in San Javier was raid‐ ed by Guardia Civil officers earlier this month and employees of the centre were arrested for giving the green light to vehicles despite having deficiencies, according to sources.

Guardia Civil officers arrived at the ITV garage in Alcantarilla on June 1 and after investigations were carried out, 17 employees of the centre were arrested.

The search by officers lasted for hours and storage devices ‐ which had been heavily scrubbed prior to the offi‐ cer’s inspection ‐ were seized, as well as

the station’s own computer server.

The force also seized multiple docu‐ ments and a vehicle, which according to police sources, played a key role in in‐ vestigations, as it was allegedly “used as a wild card in the braking and gas tests to replace those that lacked the favourable conditions to pass the tests.”

Although attempts had been made to wipe all the computers, almost all of the deleted files were recovered through computer forensic techniques, according to a Guardia Civil report.

Torrevieja prepares for record tourism TORREVIEJA is preparing its services to face a record tourist occupancy rate this summer.

With Covid‐19 restric‐ tions coming to an end the city expects to receive up to 400,000 visitors in August.

expecting tourist occupancy in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja region to be historic this summer. This is based both on the data for 2021, which were already good despite some restrictions still in place and on the fig‐ ures of last Easter.

The councillor for Tourism and deputy mayor, Rosario Martínez (PP), said: “in addition to the prospect of a summer without re‐ strictions, the expectation of tourist occupancy is im‐ portant because part of the domestic market is not yet convinced to take the step to holiday outside the coun‐ try due to the uncertainty of the international situa‐ tion.”

“The City Council has con‐ tracted a campaign to at‐ tract domestic tourism to the city as opposed to other destinations in Spain and social media influencers with millions of followers are going to participate in this objective.”

Last walk of the season WALKERS from the Hu‐ manists of Murcia met re‐ cently at the Oasis in Mazarron’s Bolnuevo at 9am.

Setting off along the coast in warm weather, the group split into two at the cut‐through after the first bay, enabling the Easy Walkers to carry on along the track while the remain‐ der went down the hill and across the bay.

“Just two hills!” said the group leader who had for‐ gotten about the descent, where Graham nearly sus‐ tained a major injury while helping Sue. There was a brief rest at the Roman quay and the group continued to the palm trees, where the leader explained how the Mazarron‐born bullfighter, Diego Garcia Montana,

planned to build a large house there.

On the way to the bull‐ ring in Madrid, Garcia Montana was knocked down by a taxi and died in hospital before his plans could be completed.

The family could not agree what to do with the land and after many years of arguments, the plot was appropriated by the mu‐ nicipality.

At this point, the group then split again and a cou‐ ple of people returned along the track while the rest went up the valley to the shrine dedicated to sailors.

The walk ended at the beach where Graham thanked the leaders for their efforts in organising the walks througout the pandemic.

Something to say Linda Hall THE Euro Weekly News recently report‐ ed that Torrevieja mayor Eduardo Dolon wished to hear residents’ comments about the town.

This prompted reader Mike Rhodes to contribute some of his own which he al‐ so intends to pass on to the mayor or the town hall.

“On May 31, Torreta 2 was visited by Strimmer Man who distributed the con‐ tents of the side of the road into a more central location,” Mike told us. “After

an hour or so Blower Man came and made an even better job of distributing what was already there, plus some. This was followed later by the dust‐raising Distribution Truck No 86 which redis‐ tributed everything again.”

Mike went on to comment that on June 1, further progress was made in some sort of concerted effort to spread it around yet again.

These have now been sent to Madrid to be ap‐ proved, which should take 20 days or thereabouts, PIOC’s Press officer Norah Bond said. If any changes need to be made ,they will be dealt with accordingly, to ensure that the aims and objec‐ tives set out in the Partido de Independencia Orihuela Costa Statutes are legally binding. Once the new party’s Statutes are approved, PIOC membership registration will be announced in the press to allow anyone interested in joining the new party to do so online or at local venues within Orihuela Costa.

Single mother wins ruling

September Roadworks COUNCILLOR for Public Works, Re‐ beca Torró, has announced that works to widen the CV‐865 from Elche to Santa Pola will continue in September.

The latest work to widen the CV‐865, which will affect a two‐ kilometre stretch from the round‐ about that gives access to the Valverde district to the town of Elche, will return in September, Rebeca Torró told Valencian Par‐ liament on Wednesday, June 8.

According to the regional gov‐ ernment, the work will cost €2.5 million and is expected to take 14 months.

The third section, which is worth €3.4 million, is in the process of be‐ ing put out to tender and the cor‐ responding tender documents are being prepared for the last phase, which is worth €2.3 million.

As with the previous work done on the road, two lanes in each di‐ rection, a central median, a pedes‐ trian lane, a pavement and rein‐ forced lighting will be in effect.

Due to administrative delays, no work has been carried out on this road for almost a whole year.

HOT SUMMERS: High temperatures were recorded in May.

Excessive heat dangers SEVEN deaths have occurred in one month in the province of Alicante due to excessive heat.

The deaths have occurred in the over‐65s and are the highest since 2015, according to local media.

Before summer had even officially started the province of Alicante was immersed in its third heatwave. Very high temperatures have meant that in the month of May, seven people died from excessive heat, according to the daily all‐cause mortality monitoring system (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute.

“The main risk when temperatures rise is that the elderly do not feel thirsty, so they do not drink water and dehydrate more easily because, with age, they have more fat than water in their bodies,” warns geriatrician Jose Maria Gomez‐Reino.

“This situation particularly affects people who live alone and have no one around to remind them of the im‐ portance of hydration. These days in nursing homes, for example, special shifts are organised to distribute wa‐ ter among the elderly and keep them hydrated,” he explained.

A RULING has recognised the right of a teacher from Elche, a single mother, to enjoy up to 26 weeks leave for her son, due to added paternity leave, and not just the 16 weeks granted to the mother, as reported by Spanish press.

The trade union CSO, ‘Conse‐ jo Sindical Obrero’, encouraged the teacher to claim a right that is already being recognised in several courts throughout Spain and which has even led to a law that is already being debated.

Until it is included in the legis‐ lation, there is no other option but to claim it, and CSO encour‐ ages single mothers to take the step, as the judges, in this case from Alicante’s administrative court number 2, allude to the ‘protection of human rights’.

The teacher, who teaches at a secondary school in Elche, is overjoyed. She said her first mo‐ tivation for going to court was knowing her son would be at a disadvantage compared to oth‐ er babies.

Mosquito awareness ELCHE City Council and the com‐ pany in charge of fumigation work in the municipality, CTL Sanidad Ambiental, have launched a public awareness campaign to tackle the spread of mosquitoes. The councillor for Health, Mariola Galiana, is asking for the collaboration of the public to take action in their homes, where CTL cannot ac‐ cess, in order to stop the spread of mosquitoes. Ms Galiana has urged Elche residents to pay special attention to swimming pools, reservoirs, puddles, drums, tyres, flower pots and

containers in general, as “larvae breed in these places.”

CTL said: “In the case of swim‐ ming pools, they should be chlo‐ rinated and, if small puddles are found, they should be dried, bleached or covered with mosquito nets.”

Elche City Council has intensi‐ fied spraying against mosquitoes and is taking daily action in areas of the municipal‐ ity most affected by the pres‐ ence of mosquitoes, coinciding with the summer season and the arrival of high tempera‐ tures.

Chase across rooftops Anna Ellis OFFICERS of the National Police arrested a 24-year-old man in the district of El Altet (Elche) who minutes before had committed a robbery inside a house, and whom the police arrested after ‘a film-like chase’ across the rooftops of several buildings, according to the Spanish press on June 12.

The National Police reported in a statement that emergency services had received a tip-off from a person who claimed that, through the security cameras of his home, he was observing a man stealing inside his home.

Officers from Elche Police Station activated a special device, in which they were deployed around the perimeter of the home, monitoring all possible routes to prevent the suspect from escaping.

The offender, upon seeing the police, fled and began a ‘film-like’ chase across the

rooftops of adjacent buildings. He tried to hide inside the communal staircase of a building but was finally arrested.

The man was carrying various items that had been stolen from the home, such as jewellery, a mobile phone, an electronic device and objects he used to carry out the robbery.

Other stolen items were found inside his car.

Murcia airport recovery Matthew Roscoe JUAN DE LA CIERVA airport in the Region of Murcia recovered 88 per cent of flights in May compared to the same period in 2019, according to data released by Aena on Friday, June 10. The number of passengers increased to 76.5 per cent, although it was still 23.5 per cent below the figures reached during that period three years ago.

Aena sources told the Spanish media that “this is a significant recovery after the Covid years, as we seem to be getting

closer to the pre-pandemic figures; this is good news.”

They added that “the UK was the main destination for European flights, followed by Belgium, where there are also quite a few connections.”

As for travel within the Peninsula, Aena highlighted that the main destinations were Santander, Asturias, Gran Canaria, Menorca and Mallorca.

Looking ahead to this summer season, the forecast made by Aena from March to October is that there will be 950,000

trips, “which would mean recovering 96 per cent of the seats offered in the same period of 2019.”

Cleaning up THE beaches of Alicante are set to have the largest cleaning system, surveillance and security in their history according to Alicante Town Hall.

Fifty lifeguards, more than 100 Local Police officers, 30 Civil Protection volunteers and 18 cleaning teams with 30 workers will look after bathers this summer, the first year without restrictions due to the pandemic.

The mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, confirmed that: “Alicante will live up to the expectations of Alicante residents and visitors to the best beaches in Spain.”

“We have clean, wellkept and safe beaches at all levels, so coming to Alicante is a guarantee of being able to enjoy the good weather, our beaches, our gastronomy and our fiestas in the best possible destination.”

In fact, the mayor said “the forecasts point to an exceptional summer in terms of tourist occupancy.”

Setting an example Linda Hall BENEJUZAR’S mayor Rosa Garcia and Sports councillor Soledad Meseguer recently wel‐ comed local sportsman Ricardo Garcia Sala to the town hall. Ricardo had taken part in the 10th edition of the National Transplant Games that were held in Gijon in northern Spain be‐ tween April 27 and May 2.

He received a kidney transplant 15 years ago and this was the fourth time that he had taken part in the Games. Ricardo returned with a magnificent collection of triumphs in the Mas‐ ter 50 swimming category for the under‐59s, having won two golds, a silver and a bronze.

He was also placed fifth in road cycling and time‐trial events.

“We are so proud that a Benejuzar resident has achieved such incredible results, putting

the name of the town in such a good position at national level,” Sports councillor Soledad Meseguer said.

A grand night for singing LYRICAL, one of Orihuela Cos‐ ta’s finest singing groups, per‐ formed their summer concert on June 10. Under the musical direction of Philip Mitchell, they took to the stage with It’s a Grand Night for Singing before a packed audience at the Santa Maria del Mar chapel in La Zenia.

The programme ranged from Vivaldi’s Gloria to Phan‐ tom of the Opera and every‐ thing in between. There was rapturous applause for the men, who gave a stirring ren‐ dition of Elvis’s American Tril‐ ogy, and Lyrical had the audi‐ ence clapping and singing along to Chicago’s All That

Jazz. There was a bucket col‐ lection at the end of the con‐ cert in aid of the Helping Hands Food Bank, which raised more than than €700 for this deserving local charity.

Medication withdrawal THE Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Prod‐ ucts (AEMPS), an entity that belongs to the Ministry of Health, has warned of the withdrawal of a well‐known drug that is used to reduce the so‐called ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), Simvas‐ tatin. In a warning published on Thursday, June 9, AEMPS said the drug that is being withdrawn is made by the Cinfa laboratories.

This withdrawal specifically affects batch BT1432, ‘pack‐ aged with an unauthorised version of cases and inserts’, and this is the reason why it has been classified as a Class

Spain honours Ms Cruz Cruise passengers to double PENELOPE CRUZ has won one of Spain’s top film and cinema awards for her con‐ tribution to Spanish cinema, the country’s ministry of cul‐ ture said on Monday, June 6.

The jury of the 2022 Na‐ tional Cinema Award was unanimous in its decision to honour the Madrid‐born star, describing the 48‐year‐ old Oscar winner in a state‐ ment as an “iconic actress whose brilliant legacy en‐

riches Spain’s cultural her‐ itage,” according to Spanish media.

“Committed to her craft, she seeks excellence in her work, allowing her to create some of the most unforget‐ table characters in the histo‐ ry of our cinema,” the jury added.

The recognition is the lat‐ est addition to Cruz’s long list of accolades, from an Academy Award for best‐ supporting actress in ‘Vicky

Cristina Barcelona,’ to top awards at the Cannes and Venice Film Festival.

President Pedro Sanchez congratulated Cruz after the award was announced.

Driving at 16 Matthew Roscoe OBTAINING the B1 driving licence will soon be a reality for 16 and 17‐year‐olds in Spain fol‐ lowing an announcement from the Direc‐ torate General of Traffic (DGT).

The DGT has said that 16‐year‐olds will soon get driving licences in Spain, but only for ‘electric vehicles with a maximum speed of 90 km/h and a maximum weight of 400 kg’.

Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande‐ Marlaska, said on Thursday, June 9: “In accor‐

dance with the provisions of the European Driving Licence Directive, we will regulate a new B1 driving licence from the age of 16 for electric vehicles with a maximum speed of 90 km/h and a maximum weight of 400 kg.

“It is already in use in countries like France with good results.”

Currently, the minimum age to obtain a B driving licence in Spain is 18. However, 16‐ year‐olds must pass an exam to have this new licence which should be available from 2023.

PASSENGER numbers arriv‐ ing in Valencia in 2022 will be almost double those in 2019 according to MSC Cruis‐ es.

Speaking to Spanish press on June 8, Fernando Pacheco, the company’s gen‐ eral director in Spain said they will bring close to 60,000 passengers to Valen‐ cia this year.

Pacheco said the MSC Bel‐ lissima will join the MSC Sea‐ side, which is already sta‐ tioned in Valencia, adding extra capacity for 5,686 pas‐ sengers on each journey This will also be the first time, two of the company’s cruise ships will sail from and back to Valencia. He said: “Not only do we think we are going to recover from the pandemic in Valencia, but we also think we are go‐ ing to make much larger vol‐ umes than those made in 2019.”

Currently, he said, they are experiencing 144 per cent more bookings nationwide than at this time in 2019. At

the current rate of bookings, the company expects to run nearly 70 per cent more sea

voyages than it did in 2019.

This forecast will be good news for the local economy.

Voiceover actress dies at age 90 Peter McLaren‐Kennedy THE voice that gave life to Meryl Streep, Julie Andrews and many other famous actresses in Spain has died at the age of 90.

Rosa Guiñón, whose death was announced by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Twitter on Tuesday June 7 was a Catalan actress.

Widely known in Spanish circles she was used to dubbing the voices of many of the top English speaking actresses over the years.

She completed more than 1,700 films during her long career including many of the most iconic and fondly remembered movies of all time. Included in her roles was the character played by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Mary Poppins in the 1964 classic and Natalie Wood in West Side Story back in 1961.

More recently she filled in for everyone from Meryl Streep to Barbara Streisand.

Married to fellow voice artist Rogelio Hernández who gave voice to Michael Caine, Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman and Marlon Brando, she leaves behind a daughter who has fol‐ lowed in her parent’s footsteps.

Emergency landing Chris King AN easyJet flight was forced to issue a Live Squawk 700 alert during the early hours of Sun‐ day, June 12, after its cap‐ tain fell ill during the ap‐ proach to Edinburgh airport. Flight EZY6938 was subsequently forced into making an emergen‐ cy landing as it arrived from Heraklion airport in Crete.

A Live Squawk 700 alert is what an aircraft sends to the control tower to request emergency assis‐ tance, which in this case was an expedited landing onto the Scottish capital’s runway. As confirmed by easyJet, the plane landed safely at around 1.20am under the guidance of its first officer.

Passengers reported seeing the captain enter‐ ing the toilet, and not reappearing, something that was not confirmed by the airline when asked

by the British press.

According to one pas‐ senger, speaking anony‐ mously: “The captain had been seen going into the

toilet and not coming out.

The plane was met on the runway by five fire en‐ gines and two ambu‐ lances after landing.”

Kate’s worry KATE GARRAWAY posted her worries on Instagram on Sunday June 12, about her husband Derek, after she re‐ vealed he recently returned to the hospital.

Kate has become the primary carer for her husband, a former political lobbyist, who fell into a coma after be‐ ing diagnosed with Covid in March 2020.

Derek, 56, was released from the hospital last year but his progress has been gradual.

Kate posted a short video of her garden which she de‐ scribes as her happy place.

Her Instagram post read. “So Derek has been in and out of the hospital a lot recently ‐ hopefully, the won‐ derful health teams will help him improve, but I woke up early feeling exhausted and very fretful. Funding for local pubs COMMUNITY groups across the UK can from June 11, bid for levelling up funding to take back control of pubs, music venues, sports facilities, and historic buildings for the benefit of the public, the government has now confirmed.

Groups will be able to bid for a share of the gov‐ ernment’s £150 million Community Ownership Fund to rescue cultural buildings in their area that could otherwise be lost forever, as the second round of funding is open.

The first round of fund‐ ing helped local people transform their communi‐ ties into more desirable places to live, work and visit, supporting 39 pro‐ jects across the UK. This included £550,000 to es‐ tablish a boxing gym in Oldham, £250,000 to res‐ cue a historic spinners mill in Leigh and £1 million for Bury fans to rescue Gigg Lane stadium.

Minister for Levelling Up, the Union and Consti‐ tution, Neil O’Brien MP said: “We want to help com‐ munities across the UK

save the pubs, sports clubs and historical build‐ ings which matter most to them and would other‐ wise be at risk of being lost forever.

British accent prejudice THE British Academy are to feature a large‐scale pro‐ ject exploring accent discrimination as academics ar‐ gue that accent‐ism is alive and well in Britain in 2022.

Though people form judgements about others from the way they speak, listeners are often un‐ aware of their deeply embedded ‘implicit’ biases.

Dr Robert McKenzie who leads the Northumbria University project said: “This is the prejudice that can dare speak its name, we are not allowed to be biased in terms of gender, we are not allowed to be biased in terms of sexual orientation.

“But denigrating accents is still allowed,” he said.

Dr McKenzie added “For people with strong north‐ ern accents, the conclusions are not good. People do think that speakers in the north of England are less intelligent, less ambitious, less educated and so on, solely from the way they speak.

“On the other hand, people in the south are thought to be more ambitious, more intelligent.”

People in the north were also “stereotyped as be‐ ing friendly, outgoing and trustworthy salt‐of‐the‐ earth folk,” he added.

EA Chief Executive Sir James Bevan said on Tuesday June 7 at a Flood and Coast Conference in Telford that many of Britain’s coastal communities will be af‐ fected and means people having to move from where they currently live. The warmer oceans and the melting ice caps he said, are not just affecting islands in the Pacific but also places closer to home including the UK.

According to a press release in advance of his speech he said: “While we can come back safely and build back better after most river flooding, there is no coming back for land that coastal erosion has tak‐ en away or which a rising sea level has put permanently or frequently under water.”

Britain has been shrinking for some time with coastal and land erosion a ma‐ jor problem for the island, whoever what is different is that climate change is both speeding this process up and increasing the dangers that go with it.

Flights grounded Chris King GERMAN airline Lufthansa on Friday, June 10, joined the others who have already grounded thousands of flights this summer. The company announced that due to a shortage of staff, from next month it is can‐ celling around 900 short‐ haul flights, according to British media.

This will have a definite knock‐on effect for many ma‐ jor European destinations, with the flights being cut on Fridays and weekends. “After a good two years of the pan‐ demic, Lufthansa group air‐ lines report high demand for air travel this summer,” said a spokesperson for Lufthansa.

“The entire aviation indus‐ try, especially in Europe, is currently suffering from bot‐ tlenecks and staff shortages.

This affects airports, ground handling services, air traffic control, and also airlines.”

With staff shortages be‐ ing blamed, among other reasons, several airlines

have regularly been can‐ celling flights over the last few weeks. easyJet and TUI made cancellations over the half‐term holiday peri‐ od, with both airlines an‐ nouncing flight cancella‐

tions this month.

Helicopter crashes Chris King RESCUE services in Italy on, Saturday, June 11, confirmed the discovery of seven bodies, passen‐ gers from the wreckage of a helicopter crash. A large‐scale search and rescue mission had been initiated for the aircraft on Thursday, June 9, af‐ ter it disappeared from radar screens.

Only universal chargers legal THE European Union (EU) has approved the universal charger concept which will be ef‐ fective from autumn 2024, requiring every supplier to use the same model.

The agreement announced on June 7 will see all electronic equipment, phones, cam‐ era, laptops etc being required to use the

USB type C cable for charging the equip‐ ment.

Already in use on many items and phones, with the exception of iPhones, the change will only affect new equipment supplied af‐ ter the autumn date. A number of suppliers will have to make significant changes to their

production to enable the use of the agreed cable, hence the two year grace period.

The change will make a huge difference for consumers who will now not have to buy a variety of cables in order to charge their item.

range of devices, from simple external hard drives to high‐end laptops and the latest smartphones.

Europe for summer holidays EIGHTY PER CENT of travellers are looking to book in Europe for their summer holidays according to a study carried out by the Euro‐ pean Travel Commission.

With the summer 2022 season approach‐ ing, the European Travel Commission has published a market study titled: ‘Exploring Consumer Travel Attitudes and Expectations to Drive Tourism Recovery’. The study shows a positive perception of Europe as a destina‐ tion, with almost all interviewed participants (94 per cent) indicating that they positively perceive Europe as a travel destination. Trav‐

ellers are most interested in visiting the Mediterranean region, in particular Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

Some interviewees were affected by the Russo‐Ukrainian crisis, but the conflict did not negatively impact their perceptions of Europe overall. However, travellers seem to be more cautious about visiting Eastern Eu‐ rope.

The likelihood of the respondents booking a holiday to a European destination is very high, with 80 per cent of the interviewees ei‐ ther likely or extremely likely to do so.

Cooperation arrangement FOLLOWING a statement by President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Joe Biden marking the second Global Covid‐19 Summit, the European Com‐ mission and the US Department of Health and Human Services have signed an arrangement to strengthen coopera‐ tion on preparedness and response to public health threats.

This will enable the Commission and the US to work together on a broad range of topics to jointly tackle health emergencies, contributing to establish‐ ing a strong global health architecture.

Life beyond earth BEYOND Earth, Europa is con‐ sidered one of the most promising places where we might find currently habitable environments in our solar system. Europa Clipper will determine whether there are places below Europa’s sur‐ face that could support life.

NASA is preparing a space‐ craft to travel to Jupiter’s icy ‘moon’ and have confirmed that the Europa Clipper will conduct detailed reconnais‐ sance of Jupiter’s moon Eu‐

ropa and investigate whether the icy moon could harbour conditions suitable for life.

The spacecraft’s payload will include cameras and spectrometers to produce high‐resolution images and composition maps of Eu‐ ropa’s surface and thin atmo‐ sphere, an ice‐penetrating radar to search for subsurface water, and a magnetometer and gravity measurements to unlock clues about its ocean and deep interior.

The spacecraft will also car‐ ry a thermal instrument to pinpoint locations of warmer ice and perhaps recent erup‐ tions of water, and instru‐ ments to measure the com‐ position of tiny particles in the moon's thin atmosphere and surrounding space envi‐ ronment.

Europa Clipper will launch in October 2024 and will trav‐ el for five and half years and arrive at Jupiter in April 2030.

EU want women on board THE EU has said that from June 2026 it will re‐ quire 40 per cent of the boards of all large companies to be made up of women.

The agreement reached on Tuesday, June 7, was supported by all 27 member states.

The directive will also require the non‐exec‐ utive boards of charities and other communi‐ ty‐based organisations to meet the same quota.

The measure is said to be binding with each member state to determine what sanc‐ tions will apply for failing to meet the target.

States that enforce both quotas for all exec‐ utive and non‐executive boards will be able to set the quota at 33 per cent, to begin with.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Eu‐ ropean Commission, said on Twitter: It is a great day for women in Europe. It is also a great day for companies. Because more di‐ versity means more growth, more innova‐ tion.”

Approval of the new legislation should be forthcoming within the next month with the expectation that there will be no objections.

This week has been no exception to the exponents of this one‐sided attitude, which, if they’re not careful, will turn us all into racists. The small and pretty town of Bideford has for years been referred to as ‘Little White Town’. This title stretches back to the 1850s when the town, endeavouring to

Dream on... repel the scourge of cholera, had all its houses painted white and covered in ash. Apparently during this period, it was referred to by author Charles Kingsley in his book Westward Ho, as a ‘little white town’. Over the years, the name has become a part of its heritage and is proudly displayed on a number of public notices and postings.

Yes, you’ve guessed it. There has now been a complaint that the name is racist! What is even more annoying, is that it appears there were actually only a couple of dissenters, but in the usual ‘minority appeasement’ mode that seems to prevail over our once great country, the town council has decreed that the name be changed in case they appeared to be advocating ‘white supremacy’. You really couldn’t make it up could you? Once again the British culture and heritage is being threatened by PC people, who are in fact the biggest racists of all. I mean where does it all end? How long will it be before anything referred to as white offends some bigot or another?

I do actually recall, that at the end of apartheid in South Africa, it was somewhat frowned upon to ask for a

white coffee and more socially acceptable to request a coffee with milk! Will Whitechapel one day be referred to as Greychapel?

Whitehaven become Greenhaven?

Will it be the Purple Cliffs of Dover welcoming the illegal immigrants paddling across the English Channel?

Why don’t we expunge the word from the dictionaries altogether?

For heavens and all our sakes, when is someone going to get a grip and say enough is enough? The UK is already one of the most welcoming and politically correct places on the planet.

What do these bigots actually want?

Will they ever be happy? If nothing is ever going to please them would it not be a far better idea to find somewhere else that does? Dream on Leapy.

According to the report, 62 per cent of those surveyed indicate that when they finally decide to acquire a new product, they do so taking into account sustain‐ ability factors, a percentage that increases among women.

PPE scandal

FOLLOWING significant losses in 2020, department store chain El Corte Inglés has now closed its 2021 accounts showing that it returned to a €120 million profit even though sales were €2.7 billion below its pre‐pandemic turnover and with fewer restrictions in 2022 should grow.

Billions of pounds have been wasted on PPE.

(DHSC) lost 75 per cent of the £12 bil‐ lion it spent on personal protective equipment (PPE) in the first year of the pandemic to inflated prices and kit that did not meet requirements.

This included fully £4 billion of PPE that will not be used in the NHS and

needs to be disposed of.

There is no clear disposal strategy for this excess but the Department says it plans to burn significant vol‐ umes of it to generate power ‐ though there are concerns about the cost‐ef‐ fectiveness and environmental impact of this ‘strategy’.

The report goes on to say that as a result of DHSC’s ‘haphazard purchas‐ ing strategy’ 24 per cent of the PPE contracts awarded are now in dispute including contracts for products that were not fit for purpose and one con‐ tract for 3.5 billion gloves where there are allegations of modern slavery against the manufacturer.

Wake up AIRLINE unions and pilot groups are up in arms over a tweeted video message sent to WizzAir staff by CEO of the Hungarian air‐ line Jozsef Varadi.

His actual words were: “Now that everyone is get‐ ting back into work, I un‐ derstand that fatigue is a potential outcome of the issues, but once we are start to stabilise the ros‐ ters, we also need to take down the fatigue rate.

“I mean, we cannot run this business when every fifth person of a base re‐ ports sickness because the person is fatigued. We are all fatigued, but sometimes it is required to take the extra mile.”

Later it was explained that this was not aimed at pilots who are required to step down if there is any chance of endangering pas‐ sengers.

Repsol surprise ON June 9, Repsol’s Board of Directors approved the sale of a 25 per cent stake in Repsol Renewables to the consortium formed by the French insurance company Crédit Agricole Assurances and Switzerland‐based En‐ ergy Infrastructure Partner (EIP) for €905 million.

The transaction values Repsol’s renewable busi‐ ness at €4.38 billion, includ‐ ing debt and minority hold‐ ings which is considerably higher than expected espe‐ cially as the business was only started three years ago.

Renewable electricity gen‐ eration is one of the main pillars in Repsol’s decarbon‐ isation model after it be‐ came, in 2019, the first com‐ pany in its industry to make a commitment to reach zero net emissions by 2050.

Growing inflation THE Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) announced that annual consumer prices rose by 8.7 per cent in May, up from April figure of 8.3 per cent mainly due to energy and food prices but with those stripped out core in‐ flation was at its highest since 1995 at 4.9 per cent.

Interest rates WITH negative interest rates set by the European Central Bank (ECB) it has now confirmed that it plans to increase by 0.25 per cent in July, the first‐ rate hike in 11 years to try to fight inflation with the expectation of further in‐ creases during the year.

The trial, which involves dozens of companies from across a broad spectrum, will see staff continuing to be remunerated on their ex‐ isting packages, provided they can maintain 100 per cent productivity.

Researchers from leading universities will be working alongside the companies to monitor the impact of the four‐day week on produc‐ tivity and the well‐being of staff. They will also monitor the effects of the shorter working week on gender equality and the environ‐ ment.

CURRENTLY, Algeria is the second largest supplier of gas to Spain after the USA and it was only last year that it decided not to re‐ new the treaty which al‐ lowed for gas to pass through Morocco to the Iberian Peninsula.

At that time, Spanish politicians were quick to enter into new negotia‐ tions with the Algerians who at the time were in‐ tent on penalising Morocco rather than Spain and agreed to increase gas flow though the direct pipelines.

Relations however have dropped to an all time low following the Spanish about face to support the Moroccan claims on West‐ ern Sahara which has re‐ sulted in the banning of all non‐ gas trade by the Alge‐ rians.

With continued escala‐ tion in world energy prices, gas could become a very important bargaining chip for Algeria to hold over Spain.

Lidl expands LIDL is making progress in its objective of continuing to grow steadily in Spain with the opening of five new shops in June after in‐ vesting some €32 million and creating more than 70 new jobs.

Circular IKEA IKEA is continuing to make its products sustainable and affordable and is now leading an initiative where new mattresses are created from a collection of dis‐ posed mattresses, prolonging the life of already made products by increasing the use of post‐con‐ sumer recycled polyols in foam.

Rewild your garden REWILDING is increasing‐ ly important for nature and insects that play a crucial role in our eco‐sys‐ tems. Last month, many people in the UK took part in ‘No Mow May’ leaving their gardens to grow and, in turn, attract‐ ing lots of bugs and bees to the flowers and trees.

So, how do you rewild your garden to promote wildlife? When you start the rewilding process, it is always important to first observe and take count of the area that’s available to you. Ask yourself what is already growing in your garden, what your cur‐ rent plants are beneficial for and whether you can include some others that attract insects and ani‐ mals.

First, you should stop using fertilisers and pesti‐ cides that damage and deplete the soil in the long run and can kill many more species than they intend to.

Create an area on your lawn for tall grass and wildflowers ‐ though many think of this as looking messy, you can create beautiful spaces that will attract butter‐ flies, bees, birds and in‐ sects. Don’t have a lawn?

Why not install a small compost container or worm farm on your bal‐ cony? They both provide excellent sources of or‐ ganic matter to feed your

flowers and are practical‐ ly free.

Here in Spain, we are luckier with the weather than many other parts of the world, meaning many flowers bloom all year round!

The more colours and variety, the easier the plants can be seen by in‐ sects ‐ easiest are blues, purples and pinks during the day, and white flow‐ ers during the night.

Celebrating Armed Crescendo International Choir Forces Day

A R M E D FO R C ES DAY is an opportunity to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from those currently serving to fami‐ lies, veterans and cadets.

The event is held annual‐ ly, both in the UK and in Spain.

This year, there will be a commemorative event on Saturday, June 25, in Torrevieja, at the Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concep‐ cion. The service will start at 3pm and will be conducted by Father Richard Seabrook. He will be assisted by the parish priest, Father Pedro Paya Gimenez. Entry into the church will be available 20 minutes prior to the service.

The service will be pre‐ ceded at 2.45pm by a pa‐ rade from Plaza Vistale‐ gre to the cathedral that

will be led, as always, by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums.

The celebration in the church will be a joint de‐ nominational service of readings and hymns in English and Spanish with musical and choral ac‐ companiment by the Roy‐ al British Legion Band in Spain, the Crescendo In‐ ternational Choir and Ste‐ vie Spit BEM. Fourteen branches from across District North of the RBL will attend the event, and there will also be a number of serving members and veterans of the Spanish Armed Forces and Security Ser‐ vices.

This will be a very spe‐ cial occasion and the or‐ ganisers would be de‐ lighted to see as many people as possible in at‐ tendance. It is open to anyone.

CRESCENDO INTERNATIONAL CHOIR performed a free concert on the evening of Saturday, June 4, at La Siesta Evangelical Church in Torrevieja, which ended with the audience giving the choir a standing ovation. More than €290 was raised by the concert atten‐ dees, with all donations given to La Sies‐ ta Church representatives to support church needs.

Crescendo Choir also performed an evening concert on Saturday, May 28, at Iglesia Parroquia Nuestra Senora del Pilar in Los Montesinos, raising about €160 to help people in that community. The group sings a wide variety of songs ranging from musical theatre to spiritual music, from pop to classical, in English and Spanish.

Choir rehearsals will start up again on September 5 and will take place at Rin‐ con de Miguel Restaurant in Los Mon‐ tesinos on Mondays between 5.45pm to 8pm. All singers are welcome.

Barbecue raises more than €1,000

NEARLY 80 people gathered together in El Bañet, Almora‐ di, on Sunday, May 22, for a barbecue to raise awareness and much‐needed funds for the newly formed Associa‐ tion of Movers and Shakers.

Jo O’Halloran, a chef from La Cosecha Restaurant in Benijofar, cooked up a treat of

sausages, burgers and chicken with delicious accompani‐ ments, with the help of Veron‐ ica. Professional DJ Barry Young entertained everyone with popular hits and games of Music Bingo, followed by dancing in the moonlight.

Local residents and friends from the surround‐

ing area got into the spirit and raised over €1,000 for the charity. The president of the Association, Marion Smith, thanked everyone for their generosity and sup‐ port. “It was so lovely to see everyone congregating after such difficult times and en‐ joying the opportunity to dance once again,” said Marion.

The Association supports people with life‐limiting neu‐ rological illnesses such as atax‐ ia, Huntington’s disease, mo‐ tor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s.

These illnesses cause a very wide range of symptoms, in‐ cluding uncontrollable move‐ ments, loss of speech and the ability to swallow, inconti‐ nence, loss of memory func‐ tion, depression and changes in personality.

As a former 30‐ year career detective in the UK and over 20 years working as a volunteer with the National Police, and a couple of years with the Guardia Civil, I know there are no new tricks, just some you may not be aware of.

There are a few precau‐ tions which will afford protection from most pickpocketing attempts.

Don’t take unnecessary valuable items with you when you go out, never put items of value in easily accessible pockets, espe‐ cially in loose fitting gar‐ ments. You will not ‘feel’ an attempt to steal.

If approached by a stranger in a public place, or jostled, bumped into etc, very common getting on and off buses, trains, in markets, etc, be aware it may be an attempt to steal from you, so where possible keep your dis‐ tance. And of course it’s not wise to put valuable items in handbags, back‐ packs, bum bags, etc.

Generally, it’s better not to take difficult to replace original documents out with you if that can be avoided. Keep copies of all valuable documents, photos of watches, jew‐ ellery etc at home, so if you are a victim you will have them to assist police investigations.

If you have a mobile I suggest downloading the ‘Alert Cops app’ so you can easily summon police

help or inform them in En‐ glish of crimes being com‐ mitted.

OUR VIEW INEVITABLE BUT PREVENTABLE THE fire season appears to have arrived early in Spain, this year spurred on by very hot weather coupled with strong winds.

Councils across the nation have been implementing procedures to try to stop the outbreak of forest and scrub fires, but much depends upon individuals being sensible and taking precautions themselves.

Speculation about the cause of the recent fire in the Pujerra area of the Costa del Sol has been rife but as yet no firm statement has been given.

There is no doubt that over the years fires have been started maliciously either out of spite or for some obscure financial reason and in the worst cases people have lost their properties and firefighters have died.

Other reasons for fires include, use of barbecues in areas where they shouldn’t be, throwing away lit cigarette ends and even leaving behind glass bottles which act as magnifying glasses for the sun.

However, the Euro Weekly News would like to advise everyone to be careful during the summer months and people should be extremely cautious.

The work of the various emergency services is always exemplary, but with large areas of scrub and forests, they are inevitably fighting on the back foot once a fire starts and we all have an absolute responsibility to do what we can individually to ensure that we don’t act irresponsibly.

Fire is dangerous and costly both to those who are directly affected whether by evacuation or loss of their homes as well as to the councils who fund the emergency services and ensure that their staff are not, wherever possible, endangered.

Hopefully this year will be safer than 2021 and everyone will do their best to reduce the risks wherever they can.

Keeping cool for less WITH the arrival of sum‐ mer and the hottest time of the year, who doesn’t want to stay at home with the air conditioning? However, this can become costly.

Here’s some tips for reduc‐ ing the price and keeping cool.

To get a general idea, it should be noted that an air conditioning unit consumes about 8 per cent more for each degree of tempera‐ ture that drops.

Is it essential to make sure your air conditioning unit is set to the right tem‐ perature and doing so pre‐ vents the air conditioning unit from spending more frigories and generating higher consumption. The ideal temperature is be‐ tween 24 and 26ºC. Keep your air condition‐ ing unit maintained. Dirty filters, for example, force the device to consume more energy to cool the house.

Make sure you install the unit in the appropriate

area, preferably in a shad‐ ed area with good air circu‐ lation, away from other de‐ vices that give off heat.

Finally, turn it off when you leave the house!

With the arrival of the hottest time of year, keep your air conditioning well maintained.

Storing garlic SPAIN has a passion for garlic and the flavour it brings to many tapas dishes and, of course, its al ajillo. But, how do you store homegrown or shop‐bought garlic to keep it fresh and tasty?

If grown in your garden, it should be dried before stored. Rinse off the soil and place out of sunlight in a cool, well‐ventilated area indoors.

When the garlic is dry, trim off the roots and take off the outer layer of skin.

Changing media

THE media provide invaluable information, opinion and entertainment. The press and television also bring to light atrocities and in‐ justices, often with under‐cover reporting, as well as the occasional snippets of good news.

Since the days of black‐and‐white newspa‐ pers and black‐and‐white television, ever‐ evolving technology has brought incredible advances in the last 60 years. And yet, stan‐ dards have declined recently.

In the 60s, the Guardian newspaper was nicknamed the Guradian, owing to its abun‐ dant spelling errors. But these were the result of typing errors. In many of today’s publica‐ tions it is obvious that ignorance is to blame.

Likewise, punctuation, grammar and vocabu‐ lary are often neglected.

Of course, the biggest change is the advent of social media where adherents have devel‐ oped their own way of communicating, re‐ gardless of the norms of literacy. All they seem to need is to be able to understand each other.

In the past, the way we wrote was very dif‐ ferent from the way we spoke, because the written word requires more precision,

whether in a novel or a legal document.

When we speak, mis‐pronunciation can be ig‐ nored and errors corrected. It is common now to write as we speak.

Viewers of Channel 4 news and other news programmes will have noticed the lack of re‐ spect shown to interviewees. They are con‐ stantly interrupted and often humiliated over a differing point of view. Worse, they are cut off in mid‐sentence; “We have to leave it

there ….” or “We’ve run out of time”. This is because the editors try to cram too many topics into limited time. The presenters rarely even make time to welcome their guests properly with a greeting, preferring to rush straight into the subject.

On Breakfast programmes a certain amount of humour is refreshing but it needs to be con‐ trolled and reasonably mature. Some of the trivial antics can be embarrassing.

During the long days of a cricket test match, it’s understandable that the commentators need to diverge occasionally from the match.

But, in the last four months I have heard these inane pearls of wisdom during tennis matches: “If he (Nadal) were a matador, the bull wouldn’t be coming out” (v Schwartz‐ man). “He (Federer) is like a cheetah once it gets going” (v Gasquet). “If he (Djokovic) were a super‐hero, he would surely be elastic” (v Kulda). “His (Shapovalov’s) is the sort of arm you can imagine throwing a javelin” (v Mur‐ ray). “If he (Schwartzman) were a balloon, he’d be deflated by now”. (v Nadal). “He (Kyr‐ gios) is a box of chocolates, isn’t he?” (v Auger‐Aliassime). Hmmm.

And during the last UEFA Euro tournament, an exhortation to the viewers: “Take a note of where you are and whom you’re with.

We’re in the final!” (England v Denmark). An earth‐shattering event comparable to Kennedy’s assassination and the attack on the Twin Towers?

Can you imagine the media reaction if Eng‐ land had actually won the final?

Laura Kemp A NEWLY released study car‐ ried out by Dogs Trust has re‐ vealed that around eight in 10 owners said companion‐ ship for themselves was a reason they got a dog.

The research, which in‐ volved collecting data from a large number of respondents (8,050 current and 2,884 po‐ tential dog owners complet‐ ed the survey), sought to ex‐ plore owners’ motivations for acquiring dogs.

Other popular reasons to get a dog were to help a dog in need, which had been the motivation for half of current owners, and many current and potential owners want‐ ed a dog to encourage them to exercise, with nearly three quarters of potential owners giving this as their reason.

Katrina Holland and Re‐ becca Mead, researchers at Dogs Trust who led the study, said: “Despite the huge popularity of dogs in the UK, there is a lack of pub‐

A newly released study from Dogs Trust reveals the reasons people become dog owners.

It is necessary to protect our dogs from heat strokes UNLIKE humans, dogs do not have sweat glands all over their bodies; they only have them on their legs and can only regulate the temperature through panting. Heat stroke is a reaction in which the body temperature rises sharply and the organism is not able to compensate it, which causes multiorganic dysfunction that can lead to death. Heat stroke can occur when the dog is locked in a place where the ambient temperature is too high such as a sunny bal‐ cony, a car, a room without proper ventilation and exercise and walks at times of maximum heat. Very young dogs, old ones, obese and brachycephalic dogs (like the English and French bulldog or the pug, among others) can suffer heat strokes even in winter.

Clinical signs appear when the body temperature ex‐ ceeds 42°C, with excessive panting, rapid breathing, weak‐ ness and event convulsions, loss of consciousness, vomiting and diarrhoea and finally death occurs.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency and it is necessary to urgently take the dog with these signs to the veterinarian.

Some of the most important precautions to take are: Always leave fresh water accessible to our dog or dogs.

Let them be in wide, ventilated spaces, and with shade.

Avoid exercise and walks at times of maximum heat.

When travelling in summer it is important to put air con‐ ditioning to an adequate temperature, take breaks and pro‐ vide dogs with fresh water during the journey.

Take them out for a walk early or late in the day, avoiding hot hours.NEVER leave it inside the car.

It’s a very cleanly de‐ signed interior but even with lots of touch screen ac‐ tion it’s still a relatively intu‐ itive cabin. The annoyance, if I’m honest, is the built‐in

Google, or maybe I’m just too old! Any system that re‐ quires you to say ‘Hey Google’ is a step too far, and I found the system too hit and miss with voice commands. That’s some‐ thing I haven’t found in other cars and from the nor‐ mally

On the road it comes as no sur‐ prise that the XC60 drives as well as it looks. De‐ spite its not incon‐ siderable size it han‐ dles remarkably well, and the refinement is superb.

Its design is such that even without the parking aids you can pretty much see every corner, so parking is

far from difficult. With lots of cabin space even the lug‐ gage area is generous, not always a given on SUVs. Volvo has become a cool and desirable brand that’s rightly viewed alongside premium competitors, not least from German manu‐ facturers. If you want something different, premi‐ um, and rather cool, then Volvo and its XC60 could well be the SUV to grace your driveway.

THE General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has reminded drivers that mandatory fa‐ tigue and sleep detectors will be fitted in new cars from July 2022.

It is estimated by the body that 93 per cent of traffic accidents are due to driver distraction, and for this reason, from July 2022, all newly registered cars must incorporate the eight Advanced Driver As‐ sistance Systems (ADAS) in them.

Although the Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) will ensure that drivers do not exceed the established

Mandatory sleep detectors speed limits, they must al‐ so carry the fatigue and sleep detector.

The fatigue and sleep detection assistant was born with the aim of help‐ ing to solve distractions that are the result of tired‐ ness or lack of adequate attention.

According to provisional data from the DGT, during 2020, a total of 380 people lost their lives when the

vehicle in which they were travelling went off the road.

This device works through three elements.

First of all, there is a sen‐ sor built into the steering wheel that analyses the pressure the driver exerts on it. It also gauges the movements of a driver’s hands and any changes of direction.

In the most advanced

systems, a camera will also be installed that monitors the movements of the face and features. In addition, the engine control unit will analyse the length of time

the engine has been run‐ ning.

Through these mecha‐ nisms, if the detector as‐ sesses there is fatigue ‐ or in the case of driving for

more than two hours with‐ out stopping ‐ it will emit a light signal in the form of a cup of coffee, accompa‐ nied by a text that will warn the driver to stop.

WALKING FOOTBALL - IFS AND BUTS THE Costa Blanca Walking Foot‐ ball League approaches its final week with three potentially vi‐ tal games in the final 10 days of this month.

Moraira, level on points with League Leaders Portobello, will be hoping bottom club For‐ mentera can pull off a surprise win at home to ‘Porto’ on Wednesday June 22.

This would open the League up as Portobello then visit Hon‐ don Valley Flyers two days later on Friday June 24. This is a must win game for ‘Flyers’ to keep alive their slim hopes of landing the League title.

Should ‘Porto’ fail at For‐ mentera and ‘Flyers’ defeat the ‘Yellows’ it will then go down to the final game when ‘Porto’ host Moraira.

More ‘ifs and buts’ though as going into the three games ‘Por‐ to’, with their superior goal dif‐ ference to ‘Flyers’ and Moraira, if they lose these first two games it would need to be by

In extreme hot temperatures Esquina Park Rangers ‘crossed the border’ into Murcia on Wednesday June 8 to participate in a Four Team Tournament hosted by Fortuna WFC. Pinoso and San Miguel made up the foursome.

EPR were quickly into their

stride beating Pinoso 2‐0 in their first game followed by wins against San Miguel (2‐1) and Fortuna Red Lions (3‐1).

Rangers topped the table after all the fixtures and faced run‐ ners up Pinoso in the Final.

Pinoso took a 2‐0 lead but were pegged back by EPR to make it 2‐2 taking it to a penalty shoot out.

Rangers have become the penalty shoot out kings of late and went on to win their third trophy in recent months with a 3‐1 score.

Richard at the Red Lion pro‐ vided the after tournament hos‐ pitality which was much appreci‐ ated by all the teams.
