Laura Kemp ON Wednesday, May 25, Torrox lighthouse was the location for a yoga session with Monika Jyoti Krabac of Yoga Vidya Torrox Costa and some of the lovely par‐ ticipants from Miss RNB Es‐ pana, who spent a week in Torrox prior to the contest on Saturday, May 29.

Monika, lead yoga teach‐ er at her yoga centre Yoga Vidya Torrox Costa, guided these beautiful young ladies, who are represent‐ ing their various regions from all over Spain, through some simple yoga techniques on the balcony overlooking the lighthouse (Faro).

Another group of girls participating in Miss RNB Espana walked through El Morche and visited the Vi‐ va Cristina flower shop where they were present‐ ed with a beautiful rose.

They also made a stop at the Alsara supermarket for some fruit and water.

Beach clear up operation Tamsin Brown T H E Malaga Provincial Council has completed four clean‐up campaigns on beaches as part of its Zero Waste, Zero Plastics programme, and 890 kilos of waste were removed from the coast.

At Sacaba Beach in Malaga, 402.5 kilos of waste were collected, with 118 kilos of glass;

Tamsin Brown RINCON DE LA VICTORIA will be commemorating the Unit‐ ed Nations’ World Environment Day with a family treasure hunt in the children’s area of the Huerta Julián Park on Sun‐ day, June 5. The day’s activities will begin at 11am and will fin‐ ish at 2pm. There will be a fun environmental treasure hunt with lots of tests and games designed to teach children and their families all about the importance of protecting the envi‐ ronment and saving water in the face of problems such as drought and desertification.

Participants will do brain teasers, decipher hidden mes‐ sages in recycled bottles and write with their feet. Each group of participants will be given a map of the park with the loca‐ tions of the different tests. Each time they complete one, the map will be signed and they will be given a clue about the next test. The first team to complete all the tests will win a prize.

The team is training at Nerja’s Enrique Lopez Cuenca Sports Complex in prepa‐ ration for the next Badminton World Junior Champi‐ onships, to be held in October in Santander.

A new home BIBI’S adoption has been finalised!

You may recall her sad story from ear‐ lier in the year when her owner of 10 years died. A foster home was found for her, but it did not work out due to a personality conflict with the other dog that already lived there.

A neighbour of the deceased gentle‐ man contacted Costa Animal Society (CAS) and Bibi was placed in kennels until another solution could be found.

A couple of weeks later, after seeing Bibi’s story on Facebook, a lovely woman from La Herradura decided to give her a chance even though she has two male dogs and a few cats.

Fortunately, this lovely woman has had many years of experience as a pet owner and after proper socialisation and training, Bibi soon found her place amongst the pack.

In May, Bibi officially became a per‐ manent part of the family when her chip was officially changed.

Bibi is now settled in her new home.

Around 20 hikers participated in the walk in the area of Puerto de la Ragua.

O N Sunday, May 22, about 20 hikers from Al‐ muñecar enjoyed a mag‐ nificent day out in the area of Puerto de la Ragua, in the northern part of the Sierra Nevada Park. The hike was organ‐ ised by the department of

Sports of the Almuñecar Town Hall.

The medium‐difficulty route was about 15 kilo‐ metres in total and lasted approximately six hours.

The hikers enjoyed the beautiful spring landscape and the good weather as they walked through the forests and of the Sierra Nevada National Park.

The next hike offered by the Department of Sports (AMD) will be the last one before the summer break, on Sunday June 5. The ‘Sil‐ leta de Padul’ hiking trail takes approximately six hours and is of medium difficulty. It is in the south‐ ern part of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and runs along the paths that were built for the planting of pine trees.

Pest control THE Health Department of the Nerja Town Hall has be‐ gun a new insect and rodent control campaign in prepa‐ ration for summer. The work will last approximately one month, will be under‐ taken at night to avoid in‐ convenience to the public and will cover the town cen‐ tre, beaches, urban areas and industrial areas.

Better beaches THE Velez‐Malaga Depart‐ ment of Beaches continues to work to improve the en‐ tire coastline following the strong storm in March. Re‐ cent improvements include sand replacements, the ren‐ ovation of a playground with new equipment for children aged two to 12, two new changing rooms and new concrete walk‐ ways.

5-mins silence THE mayor of Almuñecar, Trinidad Herrera, led a five‐ minute silence outside the town hall on Wednesday, May 25, in memory of the victims of gender‐based vio‐ lence. She was joined by representatives of local groups and the Red Cross.

Excursion to Guadix Tamsin Brown ON Thursday, June 23, Lux Mundi Torre del Mar would be pleased to be joined on their excursion to Guadix, a city and municipality in the province of Granada that lies in the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

There will be a guided tour of the city which will include the cathedral and its museum, the outside walls of the town and the Roman theatre (from the viewpoint).

There will then be a ride on the tourist train to the area of the cave houses, one of which will be visited, along with the hermitage church and the interpretation centre of the caves.

Free UMA summer courses VELEZ-MALAGA has once again been selected as one of the venues that will host this year’s summer courses offered by the University of Malaga (UMA). The programme includes a lecture from the former vice president of Spain, Alfonso Guerra, in which he will honour the life, work and memory of the influential Spanish poet and playwright, Miguel Hernandez.

This was explained by the mayor of Velez‐Malaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, at the provincial presentation of the summer courses at the Rectorate of the

Night-time hiking trails NOW that the good weather is here, the Department of Sports of the Torrox Town Hall Sports has organ‐ ised, with the collabo‐ ration of the associa‐ tion Tiempo Sub, three night‐time astronomi‐ cal hiking excursions.

The councillor for Sports, José Manuel Fernández, and the technical secretary of Tiempo Sub, Pepe Pérez, announced the three hiking excur‐ sions on May 27.

The first excursion took place on Saturday May 28 and allowed walkers to observe the

The summer courses, to take place from July 5 to 8, are being held for the 20th year running, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the University of Malaga. The training programmes are offered free of charge to all citizens who wish to learn, with no requirements re‐ garding age or origin.

Other programmes include a course on the local cultivation of vineyards and the winemaking process and a course dedicated to mental health.

The government is investing €21.22 million in sustainable transport in Malaga.

ON Friday May 27, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda (Mitma) of the Spanish gov‐ ernment approved the allocation of aid to municipali‐ ties for the implementation of low‐emission zones and sustainable public transport projects.

This is part of the government’s Recovery, Transfor‐ mation and Resilience Plan for sustainable transport in urban and metropolitan environments. The plan in‐ volves an investment of €21.22 million in seven towns in the province of Malaga.

The seven municipalities that will benefit from this aid are Malaga (€10,205,555), Nerja (€492,202), Benalmadena (€2,880,000), Estepona (€1,537,678), Velez‐Malaga (€3,706,207), Torremolinos (€1,978,833.) and Fuengirola (€426,000).

The sub‐delegate of the national government in Malaga, Javier Salas, said: “The government will ad‐ vance 67.4 per cent of the subsidy to the municipali‐ ties this summer and the rest will be delivered from January 2023.

“The municipalities will have until December 2024 to implement the projects.”

In Nerja, the funds will go towards the implementa‐ tion of bicycle lanes, and in Velez‐Malaga, they will be used for the rehabilitation of the tram line.

AS of Saturday May 28, the beaches of Nerja and Maro have a lifeguard service. The service has been put into place more than a week earlier than it was last year, and 20 days before the start of the bathing season.

The announcement was made by the councillors for Human Resources, Ángela Díaz, and Beaches, María del Carmen López, who said: “We are imple‐ menting this lifeguard service earlier in response to the increase in visitors that we have seen as a result of the tourism recovery and the good weather we are having.”

They also highlighted that the aim of the munici‐ pal government is for both residents and visitors to enjoy the local beaches as safely as possible.

The service will be made up of a total of 41 peo‐ ple, including 38 beach lifeguards, one coordinator and two boat skippers, and will remain in place un‐ til September 25.

Painting and poetry Tamsin Brown VELEZ-MALAGA is holding a new edition of the traditional competition ‘Arte a Campo Abierto’ (Open‐Field Art) in Los Pepones. There are cate‐ gories for painting and poetry.

Works can be submitted until July 20, as explained by the councillor for Culture, Cynthia García, on Tuesday May 24.

García said that the compe‐ tition “aims to motivate citi‐ zens to value their creative tal‐ ent while at the same time paying a well‐deserved trib‐ ute to the workers of the

countryside and their customs and traditions.” The councillor also wished to “encourage all fans of painting and writing, as well as artists, to partici‐ pate in this national competi‐ tion, which has even greater prizes this year.”

In the painting category, the theme will be still life paintings using fruit from the Axarquia region. In the poetry category, the theme must be related to the rural world. The full details can be seen on the town hall website at velez‐ malaga.es.

Forest fire training day THE Civil Protection Group of Almuñecar attended a training day on how to re‐ spond in the event of forest fires, according to the local coordinator, Cecilio Fajardo, on Tuesday May 24.

The session was held at the Forestry Defence Cen‐ tre (CEDEFO) in La Resinera, located in the municipality of Arenas del Rey, and was aimed at the Local Rapid Aid Groups (Civil Protection Volunteers).

The programme began with a talk on the coordina‐ tion between the emergen‐ cy services in the face of a forest fire, followed by a discussion on aerial re‐ sources.

The participants were re‐ minded of the aims and ac‐ tions of the Local Rapid As‐ sistance Groups (GLPA) and took part in a practical training activity and a visit to the INFOCA Meteorology Unit (UMMT).

Healthy living workshops THE local branch of the Spanish Red Cross in Nerja, with the collaboration of the town hall, has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting healthy eating habits among young peo‐ ple in the municipality.

This was announced on May 25 by the councillors for Health and Education, Javier Rodríguez and Gema Laguna, together with the local delegate of the Span‐ ish Red Cross, Damián To‐ boso, and the technician, Elena Cerezo.

The initiative will take place at El Chaparil Sec‐ ondary School and Sierra Almijara Secondary Schools. Pupils will be given educational workshops on the importance of good nu‐ trition and healthy living as well as the consequences associated with bad habits.

The activity also aims to raise awareness among young people about the negative effects of social media and how it influ‐ ences the concept of beau‐ ty, with an emphasis on self‐acceptance.

Choir’s 35th anniversary

Tamsin Brown T H E Coro Ciudad de Al‐ muñecar celebrated its 35th anniversary with a special concert directed

by Eusebio Pita Venegas at the auditorium of the Casa de la Cultura in Al‐ muñecar.

It was a beautiful musi‐ cal programme performed by almost 30 female and 13 male voices. Some of the singers have been part of the choir for the last three decades, and there are members of eight dif‐ ferent nationalities.

At the end of the con‐ cert, the director and presi‐ dent of the choir were pre‐ sented with mementoes of the anniversary, to the ap‐ plause of the audience.

The Almuñecar choir has performed on many occa‐ sions locally, regionally, na‐ tionally and international‐ ly.

Support for carers Tamsin Brown THE town hall of Velez‐Malaga has launched the programme ‘Family Respite and Rehabilitation’ in order to support carers with elderly people who are dependent on them due to rea‐ sons of illness, hospitalisation, emergencies or other circum‐ stances.

Dependent elderly people will be offered temporary stays at the homes for the elderly that are participating in the pro‐ gramme. Applicants are eligible for a subsidised, extendable stay of between 15 days and two months. The announce‐ ment was made by the mayor of Velez‐Malaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, on Thursday May 26.

Moreno Ferrer highlighted “the intense but underappreci‐ ated work that carers of dependent family members do qui‐ etly 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, which makes it difficult for them to even carry out daily tasks,” and said that the initia‐ tive is “very necessary for preventing situations of family stress and extreme fatigue.”

EXPLAINER: The new ‘visa waivers’ for UK nationals PeterMcLaren‐Kennedy THE European Union has an‐ nounced British travellers will need a ‘visa waiver’ to visit any one of the bloc’s 27 countries from 2023.

The latest information, re‐ leased on Saturday, May 28, confirms that all non‐EU resi‐ dents will require a visa to visit the EU. Some countries howev‐ er, like the UK, will not require a visa but will have to apply for a waiver, the European Travel In‐ formation and Authorisation System (ETIAS), instead.

But for those who enjoyed free access before, the question remains why a ‘visa waiver’.

Brexit cancelled free move‐ ment Leaving the EU meant British nationals lost the freedom of movement they enjoyed be‐ fore Brexit, and that’s where the ‘visa waiver’ comes in.

Introducing the European Travel Information and Authori‐

sation System (ETIAS) across the whole of the EU will mean that security checks are under‐ taken before the person is al‐ lowed to visit the EU. How long The ETIAS will cover short stays in Europe up to 90 days. It will not replace the need to ap‐ ply for residency or comply with local laws if intending to stay in an EU country longer.

Costs The new visa waiver will cost €7 per person aged between 18 and 70 and will be free for over 70s.

Bird of prey rescued Chris King SEVERAL rescues of birds of prey have been carried out after they suffered attacks in Gibraltar, and the Cadiz mu‐ nicipality of La Linea.

The birds ‐ griffon vultures and eagles ‐ were all be‐ lieved to have suffered wounds from various at‐ tacks by seagulls and pere‐ grine falcons.

In La Linea, workers from the municipal delegation of Parks and Gardens, led by councillor Raquel Ñeco, res‐ cued a short‐toed eagle on the eastern coast at the end of May, while it was being attacked by several hawks.

The bird was guarded un‐ til the arrival of volunteers from the Centre for the Re‐ covery of Endangered Species (CREA), who took charge of its well‐being.

Making history:

70 years of the reigning Queen Laura Kemp HM QUEEN ELIZABETH II has ruled for longer than any other monarch in British history and has become a respected figure around the world. Her incredible reign has seen her travel across the globe more than any other monarch with many historic and im‐ portant overseas visits.

Her Majesty has been an important figurehead for the UK and the com‐ monwealth during times of social change and is known and respect‐ ed for her devotion to a life of service. Her charities and patron‐ ages cover many im‐ portant issues, from the preservation of wildlife and the environment to op‐ portunities for young people.

The monarch until recently still carried out a full programme of important engagements, be it visits to schools or charities, hosting visitors or leading the nation in cele‐ bratory events. She does this with the full support of other members

The British public has seen Her Majesty carry out all of these duties as well as raising her four children, welcoming grandchildren, and now great‐grandchildren into the Royal Family.

This year on February 6, The Queen became the first monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee and the world will celebrate the outstanding achieve‐ ment from June 2 to June 5 this year.

Double transplant success Peter McLaren‐Kennedy UK doctors have success‐ fully performed the world’s first double hand transplant on a patient suffering from systemic sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that causes tight‐ ening of the skin.

Announced on Friday May 27, the transplant was performed five months ago in a 12‐hour operation at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS

Trust. Roof tiler Steven Gallagher, 48, from Ayr‐ shire in southwest Scot‐ land, is now pain free.

Whilst hand transplants are complex, they are be‐ coming more common‐ place. This operation was however the first to deal with a patient suffering from systemic sclerosis which causes hardening and tightening of the skin.

The condition is accord‐ ing to the NHS: “Caused

by the immune system at‐ tacking the connective tis‐ sue under the skin and around internal organs and blood vessels. This causes scarring and thick‐ ening of the tissue in these areas.

“In systemic sclerosis, internal organs can be af‐ fected as well as the skin.

This type mostly affects women and usually devel‐ ops between 30 and 50 years of age.”

Danny Dyer quits

Chris King AFTER four series hosting the BBC quiz ‘The Wall’, Danny Dyer has reportedly quit the show.

On Thursday, May 26, it was announced that 44‐year‐old Dyer would be walking away from the show.

The former EastEnders star has fronted the show since 2019, ably assisted by Angela Rip‐ pon in her role as the question master.

Asked by one publication if he would be fronting the next series of the quiz, he re‐

sponded ‘No’. While the show is off the air, the BBC has been encouraging fans to watch old episodes online.

It added: “Plus there are plenty of other great quiz and game shows currently airing on Saturday nights on BBC One, including The Weakest Link, Celebrity Catchpoint, and Pointless Celebrities amongst others.”

Dyer has already confirmed that he has an‐ other hosting job lined up, teaming up with comedian Ellie Taylor on the new Netflix game show called ‘Cheat’.

THINKING ALOUD WESTERN EUROPE has recently had its eco‐ nomic and social challenges but it has been a great part of the world to live in during my life‐ time. In a relatively small area, there is enor‐ mous variety in climate, topography, natural resources and scenery. France and Spain alone seem like several countries rolled into one. The green and prosperous Basque Country con‐ trasts strongly with the lazy heat of Andalucia.

Likewise, rugged Brittany with glamorous Provence. From Uppsala to Porto, there are differences in language, temperament and physical appearance whilst cultural variety is reflected in the architecture, infrastructure and social and political maturity.

The great historical cities of Sevilla, Cordoba, Rome and Florence contrast with the attrac‐ tive modern ones like Munich, Malaga and Stockholm ‐ all totally different.

Western European art, philosophy and sci‐ ence reached the zenith with the works of Beethoven, Shakespeare and Leonardo; New‐ ton, Einstein and Freud. Medicine was revolu‐

tionised by Pasteur, Fleming and Rontken.

Darwin and Alfred Russel‐Wallace discovered the origin of species.

The telephone was invented by Meucci, the radio by Marconi, and the world‐wide‐web by Berners‐Lee. From the printing press of Guten‐ berg to the discovery of DNA, our continent has shown the way. The Aston Martin, Ferrari and Porsche, the Bentley and BMW are cars preferred by the well‐off and successful every‐ where. French and Italian cuisines, as well as fashion, are recognised as among the best in the world, while. the six greatest classical com‐ posers are arguably either German or Austrian (Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms). And what about the great West‐ ern European explorers? Marco Polo opened up Asia to Europeans, paving the way for Columbus (the Americas), Vasco da Gama (In‐ dia), Magellan (the Malay Archipelago) and Cook (Australasia). Over the centuries the achievements originating from this part of the world have been staggering.

IN April, the Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture & Fisheries, Rasmus Prehn, arrived at his first meeting in Washington DC by bike and in the latter part of May, following his lead, 20 selected Danish embassies are showing how easy it is to go green.

THE white-tailed deer is an invader which arrived in Finland from the USA in the 1930s and there are an estimated 109,000 in the country, running wild, causing accidents and damaging crops so the Association for Nature Conservation wants them listed as a harmful invasive species.

SCHIPHOL airport has admitted that it is currently extremely busy due to a shortage of staff and as a result, there are very long queues at the airport and this situation may last for several months. Passengers are even advised to bring water with them to drink whilst queueing.

IRISH is due to become an officially recognised language in Northern Ireland and in the courts there, following the passing of legislation in the UK parliament, but whilst welcoming the decision, campaigners don’t know how the law will be implemented with no working Assembly.

AFTER weeks of delay, the UK Chancellor, Rishi Sunak announced support for those most affected by the rise in the cost of living with payments for lower income house‐ holds, pensioners and the disabled.

Making the announcement in the Commons on Thursday May 26, he said: “Over eight million house‐ holds already have income low enough for the state to be support‐ ing their cost of living through the welfare system.

“Right now, they face incredibly difficult choices, so I can announce today we will send directly to

around eight million of the lowest income households a one‐off cost‐ of‐living payment of £650 (€765), support worth over £5 billion (€5.87 billion) to give vulnerable people certainty that we are stand‐ ing by them at this challenging time.

“DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) will make the payment in two lump sums, the first from July, the second in autumn, with pay‐ ments from HMRC for those on tax credits following shortly after.”

It is understood that payment will be made directly into the bank

accounts of those who qualify, with additional support of £300 (€352) being provided to pensioners and £150 (€176) to the disabled.

As the pensioner’s payment is to be made at the same time as the Winter Fuel Payment which means it unlikely that those resident in Spain without a UK property will re‐ ceive any financial support.

In something of a U‐turn, the chancellor announced a temporary windfall tax on oil and gas giants but said it would include a “new in‐ vestment allowance” to incentivise the reinvestment of profits.

Currency outlook: Euro rocked by EU-Russia tensions, Pound fluctuates amid recession

Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.84 to £0.85 EUR/USD: Unchanged at $1.07 The euro traded in a wide range over the past month as heightened tensions between the EU and Russia rocked the single currency.

EUR investors were unnerved as Moscow took steps to begin cutting off gas exports to ‘unfriendly countries’, in a move which the EU branded as ‘blackmail’.

The resulting pullback in the euro was so dramatic it sent the EUR/USD exchange rate reeling to a five-year low and raised speculation the pairing could even reach parity.

However, the euro was able to rally towards the end of May amidst some hawkish signals from the European Central Bank (ECB) as the bank strongly indicated it will begin raising interest rates from July.

Looking forward, ECB rate hike bets may help to underpin EUR exchange rates in June, although the euro’s upside potential remains capped so long as the war in Ukraine continues.

Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.18 to €1.16 GBP/USD: Down from $1.28 to $1.25 The pound was also infused with volatility over the past month as fears over the UK’s economic trajectory spooked GBP investors.

This was most notable in the wake of the Bank of England’s (BoE) May policy meeting, in which it published its latest economic forecasts.

These made for some bleak reading, with the GBP/USD exchange plunging as much as 2% after the BoE predicted inflation would climb above 10% this year and warned that there is a clear risk of a recession.

The pound fared better in the second half of May however, as Sterling’s sharp plunge made it attractive to investors seeking to buy the dip, although these gains were later tested by the UK’s consumer price index as a sharper-than-expected surge in inflation exacerbated cost-of-living fears.

GBP exchange rates may remain volatile through June as while the BoE is expected to continue to raise interest rates, recent data points to UK economic growth becoming increasingly anaemic.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from $0.77 to $0.80 USD/EUR: Up from €0.92 to €0.93

The US dollar roared higher over the past month, with the US dollar index which measures the ‘greenback’ against a basket of its peers - soaring to a 20-year high.

This came as growing fears of a global recession, the war in Ukraine and concerns over the ongoing lockdowns in China unsettled investors and bolstered demand for the safe-haven currency.

While the Federal Reserve’s push back against calls for more aggressive rate hikes tempered USD exchange rates at the start of May, a sharp downturn in equity markets was quick to revive demand in the middle of the month.

Despite persistent risk-off flows, the US dollar then gave ground through the second half of May, with the currency’s bullish run giving way to some profit taking.

With the global economic outlook becoming increasingly grim it's likely the US dollar will remain well positioned against its peers in the coming weeks, particularly if the Fed relents to pressure and signals plans to further accelerate its current tightening cycle.

Explaining that the negotiations with the EU had resulted in a somewhat complicated way of calculating the cap, she admitted that whilst a 30 per cent re‐ duction was still the target, it may not be possible to achieve more than 15 per cent. Time will tell and much depends on the raw price of gas but she still believes the result will be a worthwhile saving for industrial and domestic consumers.

This latest edict does actually take the whole tin.

They consider that the world is grossly over populated and to give our children a better chance, old people should take voluntary euthanasia ‐ and they are deadly serious. They have actually produced a video full of assenting geriatrics, stating they have had a good life and as there are too many humans on the planet, elderly people who are no longer productive should opt for euthanasia. You really couldn’t make it up.

Personally I find this group a highly dangerous and disturbing bunch of nutters, but what is most disturbing is that its founder, Klaus Schwab, is a billionaire, and one of its major

affiliations is the ‘Open Society Foundation,’ a corporation funded and chaired by George Soros, who has already given away some 32 billion dollars to various organisations around the world. We’re talking truly serious money which in the hands of people who condone the ‘offing’ of old people, simply cannot be taken lightly.

The only upside of these organisations seeking to initiate the ‘great reset’, is that Schwab is over 84 and Soros 91 years old. Perhaps they would like to lead by example and be the first to ‘off’ themselves? Preferably on television, so we can all heave a sigh of relief! Now that would be worth tuning in for.

Could you believe that cynical hypocrite Meghan Markle actually showed up at the scene of the tragic Texas massacre of the innocents, insisting that she was there as a Mother!? Did anyone actually believe that she was there for any other reason than a cold blooded opportunist attempt to milk all the publicity she could from a press that she knew would be there in droves? I actually gave ginger and whinger’s

marriage three years. What I didn’t take into account was her obviously fanatical desire to retain some vestige of royalty in her self‐serving existence.

If the Queen had allowed them onto the balcony for the Jubilee celebrations, it would have been a mistake of epic proportions. What it would have done however is show this gruesome twosome just exactly how the British people feel. Have no doubt, the boos and catcalls would have reverberated around the globe. But don’t hold yer breath, these two could still slither in there somewhere; they are so arrogant they may just believe they are still welcome in the UK. Some chance.

Bracing for a coup Putin, this flawed individual will, unlike the citizens of Rus‐ sia, know exactly what is hap‐ pening in his vanity war in Ukraine. He will have access to western news and media channels and be fully aware of the resistance, which is costing his army dearly, put up by the Ukrainian armed forces.

He will realise that the sup‐ port of the west in terms of weapons, intelligence and funds may be having a signifi‐ cant effect on the prosecu‐ tion of his war. The sanctions imposed on his regime must, logically, be having a detri‐ mental effect on the Russian economy. The future looks bleak in Russia as more and more financial losses are in‐ flicted by foreign nations withdrawing their businesses.

The only answer to solve this despicable act of bar‐ barism is for regime change from within Russia itself. Let us hope that the possibility of a coup turns into reality.

OUR VIEW KEEP ALERT WITH the rising cost of living globally it’s unfortunate but true that more people will turn to crime rather than take advantage of the large number of job vacancies that are currently available.

Sadly, this is affecting us in Spain and is no different to what is happening across Europe as opportunist crime seems to be growing.

Generally, this is still a very safe country and those who have been resident for some time will know that there are areas especially in larger cities where it is unwise to walk.

If you are an elderly person who doesn’t speak a great deal of Spanish, then there is no question that you are a possible target especially for non-violent but often costly scams and you need to be alert.

Don’t let anyone into your house who turns up without an appointment claiming to be from one of the utility companies, especially if they are accompanied, simply close the door on them and if they persist, call 112 for help.

Equally, don’t leave phones or bags sitting on a table if you are having a drink or meal on a terrace as someone wandering by can easily snatch them and be off.

On the whole, the majority of people, Spanish or foreigners are nice and friendly but beware of so called ‘Good Samaritans’ who offer to help, especially if they say that a bird has pooped on your shoulder, as that’s a simple ruse used by pick pockets.

There’s every chance that nothing untoward will ever happen to you, but just be alert to potential problems.

Small balcony ideas IKEA redecorates

MANY of us have a balcony or terrace and will be out enjoy‐ ing the weather more as the summer is approaching! It can be quite difficult to see the po‐ tential of smaller balconies and terraces, but we have some

ideas for you.

Vertical gardens The most important thing to remember is that every inch counts. Make the most of the wall space by putting up some plants using vertical structures.

Another good option is hang‐ ing flower pots that you can fix to the ceiling or railing. Fixing a traditional wood trellis to the wall for vines or flowers is an‐ other great idea, or planters that hang from the rail itself.

Folding furniture When you’re short on space, it’s important to make it versatile. Light furniture that’s foldable takes up as little space as possible. Add some textiles and outdoor cushions, hanging baskets and, if you have the space, an umbrella ‐ add some personality and colour!

Grow herbs Grow some aromatic herbs using a vertical planter. Some of the easiest ones are Laven‐ der, Basil and Rosemary.

Decor Decor is very important on a small balcony. Add bright ac‐ cessories such as hanging colourful plates on the walls, small cushions, unique plant pots, lanterns and candles or string lights for when the sun is going down. You could add a rug and blankets too.
