Social housing ON April 19, Fuen‐ girola Council an‐ nounced its new ini‐ tiative to construct 26 social rental homes on a municipal plot of about 1,800 square metres locat‐ ed in the Los Pacos area.

The project is a part of Mayor Ana Mula’s commitment to in‐ creasing the stock of social homes in the municipality. The re‐ quirements to qualify for one of these prop‐ erties will be an‐ nounced once work begins.

The Council has put the construction of these 26 apartments out for tender to prospective interest‐ ed companies. A bud‐ get of €5,126,936 is available and the pro‐ ject has an execution period of 18 months.

The project adds to other similar ones launched, including the municipally‐ owned building locat‐ ed on Calle Salvador Rodriguez Navas which has 16 flats.

SPAIN officially ditched masks on Wednesday, April 20. The government’s new rules came into effect immediately. Masks still must be worn in three in‐ stances though by work‐ ers, visitors, customers, users and patients in some cases. Masks must be worn in health centres and establishments, homes for the elderly and on public transport.

Mask must be worn in "health centres, services and establishments" by "workers, visitors and pa‐

tients, with the exception of persons admitted when they remain in their rooms".

This includes “hospitals, health centres, blood transfusion centres or pharmacies, mental health hospitals and other inpa‐ tient facilities, dental clin‐ ics, surgeries of all kinds, assisted reproduction clin‐ ics and examination cen‐ tres, opticians, or‐ thopaedic and hearing aid establishments.”

No more masks The Spanish govern‐ ment maintains that masks should be worn in health establish‐ ments because they “may have a higher concentration of vul‐ nerable persons” and that the possibility of transmission is higher in these places.

Masks will also re‐ main mandatory in nursing homes and social health centres for workers and visi‐ tors when in shared areas.

The final require‐ ment is that masks need to be worn on public transport. This includes air, rail, boats and buses and other forms of public trans‐ port.

Masks will no longer need to be worn on platforms and at stations.

Opened at last AFTER years of delay, the new Health Centre in San Pedro Alcantara was officially declared open on Monday April 18.

Funded by the Junta de Andalucia at a cost of around €5 million, the president of the Junta, Juanma Moreno, joined Marbella mayor Angeles Munoz and many of the new health professionals who will be employed there. Local residents had formed an action group demanding the opening of the centre whose central building was complet‐ ed in 2021 and despite regular promises, the opening was repeatedly delayed with some say‐ ing that the Junta would wait until an election was imminent. The old centre had fallen into disrepair and due to Covid‐19 restrictions saw long queues daily outside the building in both pouring rain and baking heat. Now the new centre will be five

times bigger than the current one and will be able to cope with the 13,000 registered residents, plus those who are not registered as well as tourists who arrive each summer.

Not only will there be the usual medical options including a family medical team, a nursing area and a paediatric area, there will be room for a family planning area, pregnancy and dental ser‐ vices as well as a multipurpose area.

Crazy police announced that officers would be issued with tablets in order to speed up the efficiency of taking reports, but according to the union, the computer system used is not compatible with the tablets purchased, so it is like trying to install an An‐ droid App on an iPhone.

In addition, it argues that the tablets which are supposed to

be used in police cars are in hard holders that are so large they are potentially dangerous in the event of an accident.

It should be simple for offi‐ cers to do up their seat belts but this apparently is not the case, as the interior of the lat‐ est vehicles is very small and if an officer is over 1.8 metres tall or is wearing a belt and protec‐ tive jacket then the seat belts will not buckle.

Cheaper fuel in Gibraltar EXPECT queues for petrol as Gibraltar slashes duty until the end of June, just before the budget, as Spanish drivers are likely to pop over the border to fill up.

When Russia first in‐ vaded Ukraine and fuel prices shot up, for a few days Gibraltar petrol stations saw Spanish registered cars flocking into Gibraltar to pur‐ chase much cheaper fu‐ el.

Within a matter of days however, prices on the Rock had risen suf‐ ficiently to make it less attractive for drivers to have to queue to get in and out with the length of time involved negat‐ ing the slight saving.

This could all change

however as on Thurs‐ day April 14, the Gibral‐ tar Government re‐ duced the duty on diesel and petrol, but this does not affect the price of marine fuel.

The duty on both diesel and petrol is re‐ duced to 25p per litre, meaning that the re‐ ductions are: Diesel goes down by 15p, diesel premium goes down by 12p, petrol 95 goes down by 13p and petrol 98 is reduced by 12p per litre.

Recently, the average price of petrol 95 was around £1.35 (€1.61) per litre so there will be savings when compared to Spain, assuming that petrol stations on the Rock pass on the entire reduction to drivers.

Municipal nursery MARBELLA Council has started the construction work on a municipal nursery in the surround‐ ings of Avenida Valeriano Rodriguez de Las Chapas.

The idea is to signifi‐ cantly reduce the cost of planting flowers in public areas throughout the city as the Council currently spends some €200,000 annually on purchasing plants from external companies.

“The installation of 833 square metres of pools is planned, which would al‐

low the production of al‐ most 42,000 plants and with some eight cycles annually would ensure that all annual needs are supplied,” he said.

New allotments MIJAS Council has added another six allotments, four in Las Lagunas and two in La Cala, to the 200 that already exist in the municipality, where mainly elderly people are able to enjoy planting flowers and vegetables and working together as part of a community.

Estepona CCTV A TENDER has been is‐ sued by the Estepona Council for the installa‐ tion of 131 cameras in 75 points in the urban area and the outskirts of the town as well as in the ac‐ cess areas to Sierra Bermeja in order to allow the Local Police to rein‐ force security.

Leg injury MARBELLA firefighters were called out on April 15 when a young man, hoping to climb La Con‐ cha with friends, fell sev‐ eral metres and injured his leg badly enough for him to be stretchered out of the area and sent for medical treatment.

Cudeca’s new car ON Friday April 15, the Marbella‐based Dutch Business Club presented the Cudeca Foundation with a Volkswagen Polo for use by the Benal‐ madena‐based charity’s medical team.

The Marbella Dutch Business Club was found‐ ed in March 2003 and has about 50 members who work mainly as en‐ trepreneurs in Andalucia and meet monthly except in July and August.

Jeff Clarke of Warrior Film Productions had been responsible for raising the funds, around £750,000, to allow for the film to be made and he and wife Susan, who have been based on the Costa del Sol for several years, were invited to a private screening at London’s Ham Yard Hotel.

ON possibly the worst day of the year so far weather wise, a group of friends of Lux Mundi, both from Torre del Mar and Fuengirola, set out on a day trip to Tarifa.

On the way there was plenty of sandy rain but on arrival the rain had stopped and there was no wind, which is unusual in Tarifa popular with wind and kite surfers.

There was plenty of time to visit the Guzman castle, walk to the old city gate, Puerta de Jerez, look around the public mar‐ ket, browse in the little shops, enter the beautiful San Mateo church and to have lunch.

The rain held off until it was almost time to re‐ join the bus for the jour‐ ney to Baelo Claudia. The small museum was very interesting and some people enjoyed the beau‐ tiful views, whilst others visited the well‐preserved Roman ruins.

By the end of the visit the rain was heavy so ev‐ eryone was glad to get back on the bus. When the bus neared Algeciras, the sky went dark and red, which was surreal, and red Saharan mud poured out of the sky.

The muddy rain contin‐ ued to fall for the rest of the journey. Despite the weather, a great time was had by all, although it was less than ideal to see red sludge everywhere.

FOR the first time, Torremolinos Council will support two escape games with the first of them entitled Enigma Da Vinci taking place on Saturday April 23 in the gardens of the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre.

These are games of physical and mental adventure in which the participants must have the skills to deci‐ pher the enigmas that they encounter. In Enigma Da Vinci they will have to unveil the secrets of one of the great historical geniuses.

Covid concern NEXT winter could see millions more Covid‐19 infections, according to Dutch Health Minister Ernst Kuipers.

“It is not over,” he said on Saturday April 16. His new public health strate‐ gy will focus on personal responsibility, although the details are still being worked out. He said any new restrictions will be based on health con‐ cerns, as well the eco‐ nomic, social and cultural impact: “It is a very intri‐ cate and very difficult balance. We know this is incredibly disruptive.”

Projections undertak‐ en in the Netherlands suggest that as many as 10 million infections could occur during the seven‐month flu season, from mid‐September un‐ til mid‐April.

Kuipers added that he is confident the Dutch au‐ thorities can track the spread of Covid and any possible new variants: “We did not have this type of testing for previ‐ ous diseases.”

Mijas stands with Ukraine THE town hall of Mijas has or‐ ganised a charity festival for Ukraine on Saturday, April 23, at the Plaza Virgen de la Peña.

The festival will take place from 12pm until 6pm to raise funds for the Spanish Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Project and collect essential donations.

Attendees are asked to bring non‐perishable foods, medicine, blankets and cloth‐ ing for all ages to be donated at the festival for those in need, there will be a stand dedicated to receiving the items.

Free tuition in Scotland ACCORDING to the Scottish government on Thursday, April 14: “Displaced Ukrainian students settling in Scotland will be given access to free tuition and living cost sup‐ port, subject to parliamentary approval.

“Under new proposals from the Scottish government, Ukrainians wishing to embark on a further or higher education course from academic year 2022‐23 will be eligible for free tuition and living cost support, pro‐ viding they have submitted an application to the Homes for Ukraine, Ukraine Family or the Ukraine Extension schemes.

“Existing Ukrainian students who have

previously started courses in Scotland and who are experiencing hardship will be eligi‐ ble to apply for immediate financial assis‐ tance through a newly created £1 million International Students’ Emergency Fund.”

Terminal 3 MANCHESTER Airport’s Ter‐ minal Three is set to reopen to cope with passenger de‐ mand after months of chaos, queues and delays.

Passengers travelling through Manchester Air‐ port have been plagued with delays and queues for several months. One pas‐ senger even turned up 13 hours early in a bid to beat the queues.

Terminal Three was par‐ tially reopened on March 27, but this was only for a limited number of passen‐ gers. The terminal is set to fully reopen on Friday, April 22.

reopening, Manchester Air‐ port continues to advise passengers to make sure they check in three hours before their flight as well as checking the coronavirus travel advice for their desti‐ nation country before they head to the airport.

“All passengers flying out with Aurigny, British Air‐ ways, Eastern Airways, Iberia Express, Loganair, Ryanair and Vueling will check in at the Terminal Three entrance. All arrivals into the airport with those airlines will also go through the Terminal Three build‐ ing,” the airport an‐ nounced.

May Day at the stables THIS year the popular May Day holiday falls on Sunday and the Finca la Alegria sta‐ bles in La Cala de Mijas are celebrating with a day of family fun which will also raise vital funds for local charities and Ukraine.

The fun starts at 2pm with a whole host of traditional May day games for children, including hook a duck, pin the tail on the donkey, horse shoe decorating, face paint‐ ing, pony rides, a bouncy castle and more.

The activities will be run by a huge team of volun‐ teers of the popular livery yard.

A market will take place on the day with stalls, includ‐ ing Roberts Deli, Mapuchi Moda fashion, Zafiro Equas‐ trian, Yorkshire Linen, The Village Retreat Hair and Beauty, Arty Crafty Mummy, For Heavens Cake, Nu Skin, and Kat Candles Burnett.

Some of the local charities that will be attending on the day will be Ace Animal Shel‐ ter, Mijas Felina, Donkey Dreamland, and Diabetic Support.

No blurring GOOGLE said that it has not removed the blurring of Russian military instal‐ lations on its maps and that the images were al‐ ways unblurred.

Genevieve Park, a Google spokesperson, said on Monday April 18: “We haven’t made any blurring changes to our satellite imagery in Rus‐ sia. While the circulating images are likely legiti‐ mate, they were avail‐ able on Google Maps long before the conflict in Ukraine.”

Google does blur its

maps of potentially sensi‐ tive areas, including mili‐ tary locations. However, it does not blur all images.

Viewers can see detailed satellite imagery of Nellis Air Force Base and even Area 51 in the US. It is believed that Google does provide more detailed satellite imagery to a number of Western military forces, most notably the US. But it says it has not modi‐ fied any images for pub‐ lic consumption since the start of the war in Ukraine.

RUSSIA has warned the US to stop arming Ukraine saying that it was adding fuel to the conflict.

A formal diplomatic note, revealed on April 14, warned that the NATO shipments of the “most sensitive” weapons systems to Ukraine could bring “unpredictable consequences.”

The warning comes as President Joe Biden an‐ nounced a massive expansion in the scope and volume of weapons to be supplied to Ukraine.

A RECORD‐BREAKING space laser light, known as a mega‐ maser, the most distant one ever observed, has been de‐ tected by a team of interna‐ tional astronomers at the South African Radio Astrono‐ my Observatory in Karoo.

The megamaser was de‐ tected five billion light years away from earth and is thought to have travelled a whopping 58,000 billion‐bil‐ lion kilometres to reach our planet.

FORT INGLES: One of the leading wedding venues in Spain.

Fun at the Fort MARTIN and Michelle Greene with their son and daughter Charlton and Chelsea Greene (both well known in the entertainment industry on the Costa) live in a huge fort in the hills near Alhaurin el Grande. Last year they kindly offered the opportunity to Simply Surviving Group to put on a charity event at the Fort, but plans had to be scrapped due to the con‐ tinued problem of Covid.

However, this year they have again offered to host a charity event and the event that has been chosen is for Ukraine. It will take place on May 18 from 5pm ‐ 10.30pm.

Martin chose Ukraine because of the suffering of the Ukrainian people and the hardships they are currently facing. Around 150 years ago his grandfather and family fled Kiev, chased by the ferocious Russian Cos‐ sacks on their white horses wielding Shashka sabres and wiping out countless families and created thou‐ sands of refugees. Many of the fami‐ ly went to America while his grand‐ parents went to England to start a new life.

Martin has recently written his au‐ tobiography called The Lemonade Man.

His family started up a business producing lemonade in the UK and after leaving school Martin enthusi‐ astically joined the business and was the youngest person to form a public company on the British stock ex‐ change. However, disaster struck, he bankrupted the family business and he changed direction and uprooted, travelling the world, risking his life for adventure.

His final adventure was building Fort Ingles, a magnificent pseudo castle which has become one of the leading wedding venues in Spain.

Val Williams and her helpers, now running the social group Simply Thriv‐ ing aim to provide a fun afternoon for all of you at just €10 entry to the Fort.

Eight volunteers are needed to devise and run a fun game from 5 ‐ 8pm.

Charlton Greene is arranging entertain‐ ment from 8 ‐ 10.30pm and acting as MC for the day.

A LOT has changed since the start of the pandemic and that includes the rules and laws that govern beach usage in Spain.

Little known, but a rule that has been around for many years, is that beach‐ wear is for use on the beach. That means quite simply that you should cover up when you leave the beach, so no bikinis and bare chests.

Divorce applications up 50% WITH the new no‐fault laws barely two weeks old since they were introduced, di‐ vorce applications in the UK have soared by 50 per cent according to figures released on Wednesday April 13.

Introduced on Wednesday April 6, the Divorce, Dissolu‐ tion and Separation Act 2020 eradicated the notion that one party in the couple had to be at fault or have commit‐ ted some form of wrongdo‐ ing.

It also does away with the need for couples to prove they have lived apart for two or more years if they were not able to prove that anyone was at fault.

Importantly the change means that the divorce can‐ not be contested by the other party, a requirement that forced many to live in unhap‐ py marriages because both parties had not agreed to get‐ ting divorced.

HM Courts & Tribunals da‐ ta for the first week of the new law shows that 3,000 re‐ quests were filed, an average

of 600 a day. Prior to the in‐ troduction of the new law ap‐

plications averaged around 2,000 a week.

Stormers ready BRITAIN will supply Ukraine with a deployment of Stormer High‐ Velocity Missiles (HVM) armoured missile launchers along with 120 personnel carriers.

The 13‐ton vehicles can be flown to the war on C‐17 transport planes this month.

Ukrainian officials witnessed the weaponry in action during a display by the Ministry of Defence two weeks ago on Salisbury Plain. Operated by a three‐man crew of driver, gunner, and com‐ mander, the Stormer can deliver its deadly payload of 17 Starstreak missiles on the enemy, and then travel at speeds of up to 50mph to escape quickly.

“The Stormer‐Starstreak combination will be a huge boost to Ukraine’s fighting capability,” said the former commander of British troops in Afghanistan, Colonel Richard Kemp, on April 18.

“It is an extremely effective, highly‐mobile combat vehicle that will do severe damage to any attempts at low‐level attack by Putin’s air forces. This news will anger Moscow, which is already threatening retaliation against the West, especially Britain, for supplying weapons,” he added.

SCRATCH CARD: The winning ticket is now in safe keeping but remains unpaid.

€250,000 win unclaimed A MIGRANT in Belgium who won €250,000 with a Belgian scratch card disappeared un‐ paid as he was reportedly en route to the UK to claim asylum.

It is believed that he purchased the €5 scratch card from a Spar supermarket in the ferry port of Zeebrugge towards the end of March, but he was told that the supermarket could only pay out prizes up to €2,000 and he would have to go to the National Lottery to collect his prize.

He then left the premises and was not heard from again for some time and the only evidence of his existence was recorded on the CCTV in the store.

Then on Tuesday April 12, the man, accom‐ panied by a lawyer turned up, was correctly identified and was given the ticket by the local police. Having been identified as the correct owner of the card, another problem arose as such a large payment has to be made to a bank but as the man had no such account or had even applied for residency in Belgium he couldn’t be paid.

The ticket now sits with his lawyer and the National Lottery have confirmed that they can pay the winnings into a foreign bank account as he can’t open one in Belgium, but until he can provide details, the ticket is in safe keeping but remains unpaid.

Filmed on Russian TV RUSSIAN television broadcast video footage on Saturday, April 16, showed a second British fighter who was in their hands. He was heard identifying himself and explained that he was captured in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

“Hi I’m Shaun Pinner, I am a citizen of the UK, I was captured in Mariupol. I am part of the 36 Brigade First Battalion

Ukrainian Marines. I was fighting in Mari‐ upol for five‐six weeks and now I’m in Donetsk People’s Republic,” said the man in the video.

Mr Pinner was previously seen in a video filmed at the start of March, from a location he could not reveal. “I can’t tell you where we are, because of [opera‐ tions security],” he said. “But this is a

school that the Russians have just bombed… we’ve just had a week of in‐ tense fighting.”

There had been claims by Russia at the end of March that Mr Pinner had been killed, with copies of his passport being posted on social media, but according to sources, he was in a field hospital after re‐ ceiving injuries.

Illegal plan A PLAN signed by Home Sec‐ retary Priti Patel that will see asylum seekers sent to Rwan‐ da for processing, has been branded illegal by the United National High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Gillian Triggs, Assistant Sec‐ retary‐General at the UNHCR, said the plan was an “egre‐ gious breach” of international and refugee law, describing it as “unacceptable” and a “troubling development.”

Triggs, who is Australian, said: “My point is, just as the Australian policy is an egre‐ gious breach of international law and refugee law and hu‐ man rights law, so too is this proposal by the United King‐ dom government.

“It is very unusual, very few states have tried this, and the purpose is primarily deter‐ rent and it can be effective, I don’t think we’re denying that.

“But what we’re saying at the UN refugee agency is that there are much more legally effective ways of achieving the same outcome,” she added on Saturday April 16.

Gas games GERMANY is to invest billions of euros to move away from Rus‐ sian gas, the govern‐ ment announced on April 14.

The investment of nearly €3 billion will go towards the acquisition of floating liquefied natural gas import ter‐ minals.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner tweet‐ ed: “Dependence on Russian energy imports must be reduced quick‐ ly and sustainably.

“Floating LNG termi‐ nals make an important contribution to this, for which we must provide funding.”

Morocco finds gas Record Shanghai cases

LARGE natural gas deposits have been discov‐ ered off the coast of Larache in Morocco.

According to reports, 11 companies had drilled 67 wells, out of which, 40 contained gas supplies.

Starting operations with these new deposits will not require a significant investment appar‐ ently, due to the proximity of the gas pipeline that crosses northern Morocco, along with a large network of industrial warehouses. The largest deposit was said to be the one found by Repsol.

A report on these gas discoveries has been delivered to the Infrastructure, Energy, Mines and Environment Commission, in the House of Representatives. It was handed in by Amina Benkhadra, general director of the National Of‐ fice of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM).

According to Benkhadra, Repsol has recently discovered large amounts of gas in the sea, off the coast of Larache. This discovery was con‐ firmed by the drilling of wells carried out by the British company Chariot Oil and Gas, between the end of 2021, and the beginning of 2022.

Moral support FUENTES DE ANDALUCIA, in Sevilla, adopted the name ‘Ukraine’ for Holy Week in a show of moral support for the invaded country.

The small town boasts a sign at a roundabout at the village’s entrance, where Ukraine replaced Fuentes de Andalucia and the country’s blue and yellow flag was painted alongside.

Streets have been re‐ named City of Kyiv, Odesa and Mariupol in the village of more than 7,100 inhabitants, east of Sevilla.

The villagers have also raised €3,500 within two days toward a planned cen‐

tre for refugees, which could house up to 25 Ukrainians fleeing from their war‐torn country.

“There are no borders in the world we live in,” one lo‐ cal man said.

Mayor Francisco Martinez said the name change is an action of solidarity with the situation experienced by the Ukrainians due to the Russian invasion.

The initiative also is in soli‐ darity with other places in the world that suffer war conflicts, other street names reference Ethiopia, Syria, Yemen, Palestine and Afghanistan.

A NEW scam is in operation in the UK with the Local Government Associa‐ tion (LGA) warning that cold‐callers are pretending to be from councils with an offer of a £150 energy bill re‐ bate.

The scammers are taking advantage of the one‐off rebate offer that is available for most A to D band proper‐ ties, asking for bank details so they can credit the money into accounts.

Scam call offers rebate The LGA said however that councils will never ask for bank details over the phone with those who pay by direct debit and who are entitled to the re‐ bate, receiving the money directly into their account.

Renfe to install defibrillators SPANISH train operator Renfe intends to invest €3 million on the installation of defibrillators in its fleet. A total of 668 such devices will be fitted on its AVE, long and medium distance, and tourist trains, of which 570 are already at the start of the start‐up process.

This initiative’s main ob‐ jective is to ‘save lives’, guaranteeing maximum safety in the event of a possible cardiorespiratory emergency suffered by any passengers using Renfe’s rail transport.

The defibrillators will be located in the most acces‐ sible areas of the trains, such as in the cafeterias, vending areas, or spaces for people with reduced mobility. Signage will be placed both outside the cars and inside, at differ‐ ent points, to help find them if necessary.

This project involves providing the personnel located in these cardio‐

protected spaces with ad‐ equate training in order to guarantee rapid action in the event of sudden

First MP takes in refugees A FORMER cabinet minister has taken in a Ukrainian refugee family under a gov‐ ernment scheme to help dis‐ placed people from the war.

Robert Jenrick, the Conser‐ vative MP for Newark, Not‐ tinghamshire, and his family have welcomed Maria, 40, Christina, 11, and Boden, 15, into their home, the BBC re‐ ported on Friday, April 15.

He is believed to be the first MP to take in refugees under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Jenrick told the BBC that both families had a “very emotional” meeting when they met at Stansted.

Masks in Scotland CHANGES to face covering laws came into force on Monday, April 18, in Scot‐ land.

According to the Scottish government: “The legal re‐ quirement to wear face coverings in most indoor public spaces and on pub‐ lic transport will become guidance” from April 18.

Bulldog and pug ban THE Blue Cross is calling on MPs to back a strict new crack‐ down on ‘dangerous’ breeding of bulldogs and pugs in the UK. The charity has launched a campaign that hopes to see an ‘end to the trend of the horrendously bad breeding of brachy‐ cephalic pets.’ The Blue Cross hopes that the breeding of French Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian cats will be banned.

The Blue Cross’ Becky Thwaites told one publication: “We have already started contacting MPs. Ultimately Blue Cross is determined to see the end of the poor breeding of flat‐faced dogs and are considering all options both legislative and non‐ legislative to achieve this.”

The organisation has said that flat‐faced breeds account for 20 per cent of dogs in the UK. As the breeds gain in popularity breeding issues are exacerbated.

Currently, in the UK, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Ar‐ gentino and Fila Brasileiro are banned.

Tending the Palmeral ORIHUELA’S Environment Department contin‐ ues to add new palms to the Palmeral forest.

In line with the Palmeral Master Plan, the de‐ partment intends to plant another 50 trees in addition to the 300 planted since 2020 to rejuve‐ nate Europe’s second‐biggest palm forest after Elche’s.

The aim is to regain a density of 300 trees per hectare, compared with the current 220.

“The new trees will be planted in zones where they can be easily watered to guarantee their survival in the summer. More will be planted in the autumn when they need less maintenance regarding irrigation,” said Councillor Damaso Aparicio.

There are also plans to replace fig and olive trees while incorporating traditional crops in‐ cluding two plots for cotton, Aparicio revealed.

Six plots are to be given over to alfalfa on land in danger of being taken over by weeds: “Alfalfa improves the soil and will limit their spread,” Aparicio said.

With wheat now growing on a further 4,500 square metres of Palmeral land, an increasing number of traditional crops have returned to what the Councillor described as “a unique open space.”

Better beaches in Torre del Mar ON Wednesday April 13, the first deputy mayor of Velez‐Malaga and councillor for Beaches, Jesús Pérez Atencia, officially pre‐ sented the recently completed works on Levante Beach in Torre del Mar, which in‐ volved the extension of the infirmary of the central lifeguard post and the installation of a new bathroom.

According to the mayor, the improve‐ ments to the lifeguard post have resulted in “a more comfortable, spacious and accessi‐ ble infirmary area in order to provide a ser‐ vice to the whole of our coastline.” In addi‐ tion, the new outdoor toilet has three cubicles for use by men, women and people with reduced mobility.

He added: “After the last storm, we have been working on a series of improvements to all our beaches with the sole objective of having everything in optimal conditions for Easter. In addition to incorporating this bathing area, we are going to continue working in all of the towns along the coast, adding new equipment to continue provid‐ ing a quality service to users of our beach‐ es.”

Heroic action in Alcudia

Clear road ahead MOJACAR is closer to getting its much‐needed coastal bypass.

The Junta’s department of Public Works, In‐ frastructure and Territorial Planning and Mo‐ jacar Town Hall have signed a collaboration agreement to build a two‐kilometre section of road between the A‐1203 road and Paraje de Las Marinas.

The €5.9 million project will complete the by‐ pass begun 30 years ago to decongest the heavy traffic that collapses Mojacar’s Paseo del Mediterraneo each summer.

Marifran Carazo, who heads the Public Works, Infrastructure and Territorial Planning department, described the agreement as the re‐ sult of “intensely hard work” to unblock a stalled problem “and give it a second chance.”

Now that the Junta has authorised the pro‐ ject, the next step involves closing an agreement regarding funding before the contract is put out to tender.

“We have achieved a new scenario, with a route that will be safe and environmentally‐re‐ spectful,” Carazo said, revealing if all goes accord‐ ing to plan the contract will be awarded this year.

Once awarded, the new section of road should be finished within two years, she added.

Mojacar’s coastal bypass, which Carazo said had been “plagued by delays and setbacks” was initially begun in 1994 but construction was halt‐ ed 12 months later at the contractors’ request.

Work resumed in 2002 and the first phase be‐ tween the A‐370 and ALP‐818 was completed in 2005, although the remaining 5.7 kilometres’ unfavourable Environmental Impact Statement prevented construction from progressing.

CALLOSA’S Fuentes de Algar were able to open time for Easter despite Storm Celia’s destruction at the end of March.

The force of the rain‐swollen Al‐ gar that feeds the series of rock‐ pools and cascades swept away three bridges and seriously dam‐ aged another while sweeping away trees, railings and other infrastruc‐ ture.

Despite an initial announcement that it would be impossible to re‐ pair the damage in time for Easter week, it was possible to improvise temporary but safe crossings for visitors to the natural enclave.

“It was very hard work to make sure that the Fuentes could reopen so soon after the storm,” said May‐ or Andres Molina. The damage will cost €70,000 to repair.

Meanwhile, swimming was banned because of Algar’s danger‐ ously strong currents and the sign‐ posted one‐way system has been reactivated.

Originally introduced to ensure social distancing during the pan‐ demic, the one‐way system was re‐ instated to avoid mishaps on the re‐ paired infrastructure while visitors were also advised to wear comfort‐ able, nonslip footwear.

A TALE of heroic action came to light on Thursday, April 14, regarding the collapse that occurred in a Mallorca hotel on Satur‐ day April 9. It has been revealed that when the incident happened, the manager of the hotel in Puerto de Alcudia rushed into the rubble to assist one of his mem‐ bers of staff.

Showing total disregard for his own safety, the director held the hands of a 59‐year‐old cook who had been crushed by a falling wall, while firefighters fought to release her. Ac‐ cording to 061 sources, the woman’s thigh was compressed, and she also suffered in‐ juries to other parts of her body.

Both staff members were reportedly transferred to the Muro hospital in a serious condition.

The incident happened in the three‐star BlueSea Piscis Hotel, at around 3pm. It was first believed that a gas explosion had caused the collapse of a ceiling into the kitchen area, but it has now been confirmed that it was actually due to gym equipment on the floor above. Police sources indicated that the collapse “could have been a real dis‐ aster.”

These same police sources explained that there were around 330 clients staying in the hotel at the time. They have since been relo‐ cated to other establishments, with the ho‐ tel facility having been sealed. It will not open its doors until a report from the munic‐ ipal technician certifies that there is no risk of new collapses.

Accused of mis-selling setting up an annual payment, customers subsequently found it was impossible to contact the company to arrange a refund. In some cases, the company actu‐ ally took money from individu‐ als without their consent.

“Neither the company, nor its director, Abdelhak Akayour, co‐ operated with the Insolvency Service investigation. The for‐ mer director, Imran Munshi, said he set up the company ‘to compare white goods and poli‐ cies on them’, but that it had been sold to Akayour before it ever traded.

Ukrainian currency THE EU wants to allow refugees to exchange some Ukrainian banknotes in order to make life a lit‐ tle easier for them.

The non‐binding resolu‐ tion confirmed on April 19 wants to see member states set up national schemes that would allow for the conversion of hryv‐ nia notes under similar conditions across the EU. The schemes would al‐ low displaced persons from Ukraine, including children, to exchange up to 10,000 hryvnias (ap‐ proximately €310), per person.

This would be free of charges, and at the official exchange rate as pub‐ lished by the National Bank of Ukraine. The dura‐ tion of these schemes would be a minimum of three months.

Training and ob‐ taining airport security checks are time consuming so it has announced that it will give new staff who are already qualified (ie they work for other airlines) a £1,000 ‘golden hello’ paid over six months provided they start work by July.

Spirit prices could be increased by 2023.

BRUSSELS wants to force Spain to raise taxes on wine, beer and al‐ coholic beverages and it is expect‐ ed that a formal proposal on the matter will be put forward after a public consultation.

Public consultation on raising taxes on alcoholic beverages is set to remain open until July 4, whilst any rule changes could come into force by the second quarter of 2023, as reported by the Spanish

press on Wednesday April 13.

According to the European Com‐ mission, the rule that determines the minimum rates applied to al‐ coholic beverages by member states has not changed since 1992 and it is expected that tax increas‐ es could raise around €1 billion per year in Spain if similar rates to the rest of Europe were applied.

As reported by the Spanish press: “Spain is the fifth country

in the EU (adding the United King‐ dom to the member states) that gets the least money from the tax applied to distilled spirits with an alcohol content of 40 per cent or more. It is also one of the lowest earners on beer.”

Taxes on alcohol are intended to ‘discourage excessive consump‐ tion.’ In Spain though, drinking wine is considered part of the Mediterranean diet.

Hello campers SOME 18 months ago, US private equity firm Blackstone spent around £3 billion on purchasing Bourne Leisure, owners of Haven, Warner Leisure Hotels and Butlin’s.

Now it is looking to offload Butlins which currently only oper‐ ates three holiday camps in Bognor Regis, Minehead and Skeg‐ ness, although it does own three hotels as well.

According to Sky News, there appears to be a great deal of in‐ terest from other American investment companies such as Fortress Investment Group, which owns Punch Taverns and TDR Capital, one of the principal shareholders in Asda.

The likely price is be‐ lieved to be in the re‐ gion of £600 million.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT TO my mind, Boris Johnson’s plan to ship illegal boat immigrants to Rwanda is nothing short of brilliant. Naturally, with monotonous predictability the wokes and ‘do gooders’ are screaming their discontent, along with the lefties, who would rather see the country go to hell in a hand cart than lose a Labour vote in the next election.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually don’t consider this scheme has a great deal of shelf life at all. As soon as the millions paid out to the Rwanda authorities are seen to be financing their private jets more than immigrant’s welfare, I envisage the whole scheme fizzling out.

No the point here is deterrent.

When the first participants of the scheme begin posting back pics of Rwanda housing instead of UK hotel rooms, those still heading for Calais will immediately begin to rethink their trip and actually remain in other EU countries en route. The majority of these people do not want sanctuary; they have proven that over and over again. They want the soft handouts and free benefits that have been provided by the beleaguered British taxpayer for

Another thing that appears to have been overlooked is that if the UK was still shackled by the EU it wouldn’t have been able to take these measures; yet another Brexit plus that will undoubtedly be played down by the left wing British media.

So, Ta Ra! The final chapter in the plastered bridegroom saga of a couple of weeks ago. You may recall our groom was the victim of a dastardly stag night plot devised by his best man who had left him with his arm unnecessarily in Plaster of Paris for the whole duration of his wedding and honeymoon. Now read on.

A couple of years later on, lo and behold the best man had himself succumbed to love’s young dream and subsequently fixed the date of his own wedding. Naturally with the memory of the ‘joke’ he played at the time of his friend’s betrothal still lingering, he anticipated a form of revenge would certainly arrive at some time or another. But it never materialised.

Despite his nerves being wrecked, the stag night and the wedding all went successfully by without any apparent

hitch. With a quiet sigh of relief and the cheers of well‐wishers in his ears, he and his bride finally flew off to their honeymoon in Barbados. After checking into their luxury hotel they soon retired and subsequently enjoyed their first romantic night in the sumptuous bed of the bridal suite.

The next morning, after even more canoodling, the groom called room service and lazily ordered breakfast for two. To his disbelieving and incredulous ears from under the bed issued the unmistakable voice of his maligned bridegroom friend of yore.

‘You better make that for three’ it cried triumphantly. Yep, you guessed it. His friend had been with them all night. A ménage a trois they could definitely have done without!

Now streaming: The Girl from Plainville THE GIRL FROM PLAINVILLE is based upon an Esquire ar‐ ticle by Jesse Barron explor‐ ing the bizarre story of Con‐ rad Roy III, an 18‐year‐old Massachusetts teenager who took his own life after being encouraged by his 17‐ year‐old girlfriend Michelle Carter.

This series has an impres‐ sive 93 per cent critic rating and a 62 per cent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is worth a watch if you are into the true crime genre and ethics‐based crime cas‐ es. I remember reading the Esquire article and being horrified and confused at the thought of a teenager convincing another to take their own life, even going as far as telling them to ‘drink bleach’ and pushing them to ‘do it today’.

The series goes into great detail about the relationship between Conrad and Michelle, portrayed in an in‐ credible performance by Elle Fanning (Super 8), and the

bizarre and haunting text messages leading up to Con‐ rad’s death.

Although this series is based on true events, hav‐ ing watched a few docu‐ mentaries on the case, some of the storyline and conver‐ sations have been overly dramatised (the audience is also informed of this at the beginning of each episode). I feel the case was bizarre enough without the drama‐ tisation and focusing on the facts would have been enough to portray the story.

This mini‐series brings up a lot of question about ethics and whether a person can be prosecuted for con‐ vincing another to commit suicide. Carter was convict‐ ed of involuntary manslaughter in 2017 and was released early from prison, after serving only 11 months of her 15‐month sentence. It is unclear where Michelle is now. The Girl from Plainville is available to stream on Hulu now.

€15,000 raised at Puente Roma A GLITTERING concert for Ukraine at Puente Romano on Tuesday, April 19 raised an amazing €15,000, with around 300 tickets to the event sold.

Taking place in the resort’s stunning Salon Andalucia, Puente Romano’s ‘Concert for Peace’ brought together more than 20 artists from five countries around the world, all to raise funds to help repatriate displaced Ukrainian refugees.

Hosting the event, presenter Chris Karle thanked Puente Ro‐ mano’s John Thomson for organis‐ ing the concert, as well as Asocia‐ cion Amigos de la Musica de Marbella and all the event’s spon‐ sors, including the Euro Weekly News.

Karle explained: “This concert will be helping refugees with a cel‐ ebration of music and dance.

“We have brought together in‐ ternational artists from around the world, including Poland, Russia, Ukraine, the UK, and Spain.”

The evening of music and enter‐ tainment was inaugurated by Pol‐ ish violinist Piotr Cegielski, who had flown in from Warsaw espe‐ cially for the event.

Born in Ukraine, Piotr is the first violinist at the Warsaw Philhar‐ monic Orchestra and played a moving suite of classical songs ac‐ companied by Malaga‐based pi‐ anist Maria Márquez Torres.

The duo were followed by Julia Shevchenko’´s Ballet Troupe, in‐ cluding dancers Amanda Gomez, Esther Marquez Navarro, Snijzanna Bedudka, and Julia Schevchenko.

Performing a graceful ballet, the troupe danced to the Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker be‐ fore one member was later joined on stage by members of junior ballet group Dance Stars.

Adorned with fluffy halos, the mini ballerinas performed to Rob‐ bie Williams’ Angels to the delight of the audience.

Following them was cellist Cello Femme, as well as opera singer Klaudya TS, and vocalist Mark An‐ drew Edmundson.

In an interval after the acts, guests enjoyed hotdogs at a high‐ end food truck which had been stationed outside the concert room, while speaking to some of the show’s artists.

Guest Dr Yussuf Hamied, who lives in Marbella, told the Euro Weekly News: “We’ve really en‐ joyed the evening.

On February 23 this year, Darina and her family were woken at their home in Kharkiv, Ukraine by the sounds of explosions following the invasion of the Russian army.

I KNOW there’s a disconnect between writing about an amusing story as I’m doing this week and reading about people being starved and bombed in Ukraine. Not so long ago I wrote that as a columnist you ask yourself, in the wake of Putin’s barbaric invasion, whether you had better write about Ukraine, because it’s all anyone wants to read about, or whether you’d better not, because it’s the one thing nobody wants to read about.

Well, I’ll try to walk a fine line ‐ a sort of balancing act ‐ between the two. I won’t write about Ukraine every week, because that would bore everyone silly.

But at the same time if there’s a sub‐ ject that might help lighten the mood and lift the spirits I’ll take it on.

Like the story about the drunk who joined a search party looking for him‐ self. Yes, you read that right. A drunk who had been reported missing in Turkey spent hours with a search party

Hopefully he wasn’t too disappointed when he did find himself (admittedly saving himself a fortune in therapy).

But we shouldn’t laugh too much ‐ his story could maybe be taken as a metaphor for life itself, right?

BY NICOLE KING ONE of the best parts of living in Marbella is not just being able to make friends with peo‐ ple of all nationalities and religions, but to learn more about their way of thinking and culture, vastly different perhaps to the school room and news room perspectives.

Dependent on where we are born and in‐ to which heritage, we will develop certain traits and opinions. This can lead us to as‐ sumptions, not necessarily based on our own true beliefs, but as a result of the sub‐ conscious inheritance of the views perceived to be the norm.

Since living in Spain I’ve come to appreci‐ ate the positives of the Spanish way of life, the beauty of ‘manana’ and how living life and being with family is something to be proud of. It’s not a lazy country, it’s a magnif‐ icent country, with all its ‘quirks’. Under‐ standing the idiosyncrasies of a nation is a privilege, one we can only aspire to if we reach out of our comfort zone and try to get to know at least something about the cul‐ ture and people.

We never know when we’re going to learn something new or change a lifetime discernment. As an example, when preg‐

that I was Jewish and she was obviously shocked, not necessarily because of what she’d said, but because I wasn’t as she had envisioned a Jew would be. standing of how much we have in common, particularly our religion. As it turns out Jews, Christians and Muslims all worship the same God. In honour of my friend in Madrid, I too ask questions when faced with an opposing belief and I’m usually pleasantly surprised.

Such is the case with Islam.

As I understand it Muhammed is a mes‐ senger from God (Allah) chosen to transmit His words through the Quran; the holy book of Islam. Muhammed was a prophet, as were Jesus, Moses, Abraham and Noah be‐ fore him, all passing on God’s messages, ap‐ propriate for each specific time in the history of humanity.

Who’d of thought? Is it a coincidence that this year the three religions celebrate, Ra‐ madan, Easter and Passover at the same time? A reminder sent from above perhaps that we are as one in the eyes of God and should all live as one too.

Costly policy credibly heartless per‐ son, the chancellor and his wife have been USA green card holders to avoid tax bills, and multi‐ ple members of parlia‐

An ab‐ surd policy that has no basis in human decency or common sense, it can only exist as a diversion technique to distract or‐ dinary people and ap‐ pease racists.

The UK government has already agreed to pay their Rwandan coun‐ terparts £120 million be‐ fore a single refugee has even been transported there, as the country cur‐ rently struggles through a cost of living crisis that is biting all but the most well‐off households.

reality. We only have to look at the Australian version of this scheme to see that it is an awful idea on every level.

Australia currently transports refugees to an asylum prison on the is‐ land of Nauru and the costs to do this are astro‐ nomical. Nauru refugee prison currently costs the Australian government a huge £430 million a year, which amounts to £4.3 million per person held there. A ridiculous price to pay for something that amounts to not much more than institutional racism.

When Priti Patel was looking into a refugee prison in Albania last year, projected costs were already looking to be £100,000 per person per year and we all know

that government projects always balloon over bud‐ get. As well as the off‐ shore processing centre, there is to be a Greek‐ style ‘reception centre’ built in North Yorkshire as well, where people will have to ‘obey strin‐ gent rules or face losing their right to claim asy‐ lum’. It has been proven over and over again that these detention centres achieve nothing but harm, violence and cruel‐ ty and the UK govern‐ ment is aware that there are alternatives, but still chooses to inflict this state violence on vulner‐ able people. The prison at Nauru is also rife with abuse by guards of the people being held there There is little doubt in my mind that these poli‐ cies are being pushed to

deflect scrutiny from all the other wrong‐doing of this despicable govern‐ ment. I also believe that the money the plans will cost will line the pockets of Tory backing compa‐ nies. But as Boris John‐ son wrote himself in the Telegraph in 2011: “When a regime has been in power too long, when it has fatally ex‐ hausted the patience of the people, and when oblivion finally beckons ‐ I am afraid that across the world you can rely on the leaders of that regime to act solely in the interests of self‐ preservation, and not in the interests of the elec‐ torate.” Let’s hope the electorate finally stands up for themselves and those less fortunate than them.

Excellent education in Finland FINLAND is leading the way in ed‐ ucation due to its common‐sense practices and a holistic teaching environment that strives for equi‐ ty over excellence. Here are five reasons why the Finnish approach to education sees them leading the way.

4. A more relaxed atmosphere Students usually only have a couple of classes a day in a more relaxed atmosphere and with plen‐ ty of breaks for food and recre‐ ational activities. Spread through‐ out the day are 15 to 20‐minute intervals where children can get up and stretch, grab some fresh air and decompress. This type of envi‐ ronment is also better for the teachers, they have specific teach‐ er rooms to relax, plan and so‐ cialise.

1. No standardised testing There is no standardised testing in Finland, with the only exception being the National Matriculation Exam, which is a voluntary test for students at the end of an upper‐ secondary school. All of the chil‐ dren in Finland are marked on an individual basis and grading system which is set by their teacher. The Ministry of Education tracks overall progress, sampling groups across different ranges of schools.

2. Cooperation not competition While many countries see the educational system as a competi‐ tion against students, the Finns see it differently and, ironically, this has placed them as the leader of the in‐ ternational pack. The educational system in Finland doesn’t worry

about merit‐based systems, there are no lists of top performing schools, students or teachers. It is an environment based on coopera‐ tion, not competition.

3. Less hours in school The Finns wake up later for a less strenuous day, typically starting schools between 9am and 9.45am and ending between 2pm and

2.45pm. Waking up later makes for less sleepy students and better con‐ centration. They have longer class pe‐ riods and longer breaks in between, making the system more holistic.

5. Less homework According to the OECD, students in Finland have the least amount of homework than any other student in the world, spending just half an hour a night on outside school work. Finnish students also don’t have tutors, yet they are outper‐ forming cultures that have toxic school‐life balances. Finnish stu‐ dents get their work done in school hours without added competition and pressure, making it easier to focus on the true task at hand ‐ learning and growing as a human being.

Languages of Finland THE Euro Weekly News has been delving into all things Finnish this week, we take a look at the languages spoken in this northern country, the most beautiful places to visit, the education system, unique Finnish lakes and the four main regions.

There are two languages spoken in Fin‐ land, Finnish and Swedish, and it is offi‐ cially a bilingual country. Almost 9/10ths of the population in Finland speak Finnish and the language is an important nation‐ alist feature, however, there are strong regional dialects.

The majority of the Swedish‐speaking population is found in the coastal area in the south, southwest, west and in the Åland Islands (where Swedish is the sole official language). According to the consti‐ tution of 2000, it is required by public au‐ thorities to provide for the Finnish and Swedish populations of the country equally, when obligations and rights con‐ cerning the national languages were ad‐ dressed in detail in the Language Act pub‐ licised in 2004.

A very small percentage of Finns speak Russian and Estonian, and there is also a very small minority of people who speak Sami in the extreme north of Finland. Out of the 11 Sami languages and three are spoken in Finland ‐ North Sami, Inari Sami

Sami is not a na‐ tional language in Finland like Swedish and Finnish, however, the Sami Language Act of 2004 guarantees its status as a re‐ gional minority language in the country.

group of languages, while Finnish is a Finno‐Ugric language. Finno‐Ugric also in‐ cludes Estonian, Hungarian and Sami and they share enough common lexical and grammatical features to prove a com‐ mon origin.

FINLAND

1. Lapland Lapland is the most northern region in Fin‐ land, a sparsely populated area bordering Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea known for its amazing year‐round light phenomena and vast Arc‐ tic nature. It is also home to the indigenous Sami people and where thou‐ sands of people from across the world travel to meet Santa Claus and his reindeer!

2. Lakeland A region true to its name, Lakeland is Eu‐ rope’s largest lake district and where most Finns go

to recharge and reconnect with nature. There’s plen‐ ty of things to do all year round, from cruises to fishing, ice swimming, paddleboarding, ice skat‐ ing and swimming. And, where there’s a lake, there’s a cottage, popular with Finns and visitors alike for a relaxing break connecting with nature.

3. Coast and Archipela‐ go This stunning region of‐ fers lively coastal cities, national parks, historic manors and secluded lighthouses. There are more than 50,000 stun‐ ning islands dotted across the sea ‐ this is the world’s largest archipelago, and there are plenty of hidden gems to be discovered.

Helsinki is said to be one of the world’s most liveable cities and it is very easy to see why!

Some useful tips if you’re thinking of visiting Finland: Finland is easy to get to via cruise, plane or car.

You’ll need a valid national passport and, if you aren’t a citizen of Finland or an‐ other European Economic Area (EEA) country, you may also need a visa.

Finland is a year round destination, whether you want to ski and ice skate in the winter, see the North‐ ern Lights in spring, forage the fruits in autumn or ca‐ noe in summer.

MOST of the lakes in Finland are found in Lakeland, but they can also be found in every part of this beautiful northern country. Here are five of the most unique lakes that are truly exceptional.

1. Lappajärvi Lake This lake in the archipelago region is Europe’s biggest crater lake. This 14‐mile wide crater was formed 70 million years ago when a crater hit the site. A rare rock called impactite, formed by the impact of the meteorite, is found around the lake and on its islands and the region still experiences shallow earthquakes.

2. Inarijärvi Lake Located in the north of Lapland, this is the cleanest and clearest of all of the large lakes in Finland and is third largest.

There are more than 3,000 islands on Inarijärvi, a charming labyrinth with large areas of open water. There are amazing canoeing routes and many guided trips during the summer. During the winter, the lake is optimal for ice‐fishing, snow‐ mobile rides and aurora spotting.

3. Tuusulanjärvi Lake Located in the Helsinki region, the beauty of this lake has attracted many artists. The 16‐mile cycling route around the lake is extremely popular with resi‐ dents and visitors and the Sarvikallio scenic lookout can be accessed directly

from the road or by walking the circular 3.4 km route in the Sarvikallio area.

4. Sääksjärvi Lake This is the largest fountain‐based lake in Finland and was shaped by a huge ice floe during the Ice Age. The waters here a crystal clear due to water filtration and

changes through the soil and it is sur‐ rounded by spectacular pine forests and fine white sand. The shallow water makes it perfect for families and is just an hour’s drive from Helsinki.

5. Julma‐Ölkky Lake Located in Kuusamo’s Hossa nation‐

al park in Lakeland, Julma‐Ölkky, meaning The Cruel Canyon, is the largest canyon lake in Finland and is an impressive sight to see. There is a scenic suspension bridge across the lake and two incredible trails to see the amazing views.

Six of the most beautiful towns

DOTTED around this land of lakes and forests are a number of truly beautiful towns. Here are six of our favourites!

1. Porvoo Loved by some of the country’s greatest poets and artists, Porvoo is the second oldest city in Finland and its history can still been seen and felt through its charming streets. There are lots of traditional wooden houses and it is also famous for its variety of interior design shops. This town should be visited at least once!

2. Hanko Finland also has some beautiful beaches, and Hanko is a paradise for those who love sandy beaches, the sun and the sea. The town also has a charming atmosphere, plenty of colourful events and incredible restaurants. Hanko is of‐ ten called the Finnish Riviera!

3. Mariehamn The capital of Åland Island, Mariehamn has a small town centre with lots of colourful wooden buildings and houses ‐ beautiful in the summer and winter. It has a stunning large marina to explore, once home to the world’s largest ocean‐

ic sailing ships, and a museum in the western harbour.

4. Raseborg There are a number of things to see in Raseborg, both man‐made and natural. There are historic ironworks of Fiskars and Billnäs, Raseborg castle ruins, the Svartå Manor and Ekenäs with its quaint small wooden houses. Raseborg is a great jumping‐off point to explore the magnificent archipelago, which contains Ekenäs National Park.

5. Naantali Naantali is the town of a thousand islands. This town boasts lively cafes, restaurants, terraces and beautiful bou‐ tiques. The town’s well‐known sights are Moominworld, Naantali Spa Hotel and Kultaranta ‐ the summer residence of the President of Finland.

6. Savonlinna Savolinna is one of the most ancient towns in Finland, founded in 1639. This inland town was built around Olavin‐ linna castle, which you can still visit. At the right time of the year you may be able to catch the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships, one of Finland’s ‘interesting’ sports!

HIGHER MARKET PRICES? From our Facebook DOES anyone ever question the difference in pricing here in Spain and the UK with the German supermarkets? I buy an English newspaper twice a week and can’t help but notice the huge difference in prices offered on their adverts. Aldi this week were offering cauliflowers at 39p each (not a kilo), 2kg of potatoes at 23p, cucumbers at 39p each, these are just an example of many products that are on offer every week at ridiculously cheap prices compared to Spain, are we being ripped off here?

I wanted to moan, and you seemed like a good sounding board.

These blooming car seats for kids.

How did we survive without them quite easily actually. A cushion under them and one either side and a seat belt. I can’t remember anyone dying. That awful rain we have just had. I hated passing people with kids and you can’t give them a lift because you don’t have one of these blooming seats.

People on holiday here with kids had to walk in the downpour to get breakfast if they had kids, hiring a car would have meant buying car seats as well.Where do they all go as the kids grow out of them. They are not bio-degradable so there must be a

mountain of them somewhere. How is that saving the planet? And parents have to buy bigger cars to fit the things in, how is that saving the planet as well. They are the most irritating rule that has ever been brought into the world.

A serious note about them.

If a car turned over, you would have trouble getting a tot out and what if the car went under water or caught fire. I think health and safety haven’t thought this through.

VISIT RWANDA WHEN the Arsenal Football Club signed a deal with the Rwanda Development Board in 2018 said to be worth £10 million a year and due to run until 2025, it is unlikely that they would have expected such a visit to become an enforced requirement for many.

The fact that an estimated 800,000 people were massacred in 100 days of genocide in that country in 1994 is uppermost in the minds of many who are worried about the British government deal with Rwanda to shunt off illegal arrivals to Britain.

The country ranks at number 139 in the world for annual GDP and although supposedly (at least according to the Rwanda government) the economy is booming, it is worse off than recognised poor countries such as Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Increase your endurance EVERYONE knows that regular physical exercise is important. The benefits are almost immediate, and exercise is considered to be the main protective factor against agerelated diseases. Endurance plays an important role for older people and is key to allowing them to remain independent for as long as possible.

Endurance can be trained with activities such as walking, jogging, swimming and dancing, as well as with other everyday activities, such as raking leaves or cleaning the windows. These activities increase your heart rate and breathing rate for an extended period of time. Doing them regularly will allow you to move further, faster and more efficiently.

To improve your endurance, set goals and make them gradually more difficult.

Start slowly, especially if you are used to a sedentary lifestyle. Start with five or 10 minutes at a time and build up to 30 minutes. Doing 30 minutes of regular moderateintensity activity is ideal for gaining endurance.

Remember that you know your limits. Endurance activities should not make you breathe so heavily that you are not able to speak. They should not cause dizziness or pain.

Try counting your steps with an application or device to measure your progress.

For example, if you walk under 5,000 steps a day, try to gradually add 3,000 to 4,000 more steps. If you are walking around 8,000 steps a day, try to reach 10,000. When you are ready, you can also increase the difficulty by walking the same number of steps in a shorter amount of time or walking on steeper slopes.

Being assertive DO you find it difficult to be assertive in cer‐ tain situations? Going along with a friend because you cannot say ‘no’ to them even though you aren’t comfortable? Yes, many of us have been there and can still continue this into adulthood.

We’ve all got that friend who’s pushy, can influence our decisions, giving their opinions onto you all the time, even when you don’t want it.

What is Assertiveness?

Assertiveness is a healthy way of commu‐ nicating. It’s the ability to speak up for our‐ selves in a way that is honest and respectful.

Every day, we’re in situations where being as‐ sertive can help us like approaching a teacher with a question, or doing well on a job or col‐ lege interview, being pressured by other peers and so on.

What Can We Do To Be More Assertive?

Practise using ‘I’ statements such as: “I’d like...” “I prefer...” or “I feel...”

Find a role model who’s good at being as‐ sertive, not too passive and not too aggres‐ sive. See if you can imitate that person’s best qualities. Remind yourself that your ideas and opinions are as important as everyone else’s. Remember, the more you practise be‐ ing assertive, the easier it will get and the

@MINDFULTEENWORLD ON INSTAGRAM happier you will feel making your own deci‐ sions and that it is okay to say ‘no’.

You will feel more in control of your own life, more confident and it’s important to set boundaries. Anyone trying to disrespect those boundaries are not respectful friends.

Remember, these friends need to learn too, learn to be less aggressive and pushy just as you have to learn to be more assertive and that’s okay. We need to be kind to ourselves and sometimes we have to push back in un‐ comfortable situations.

Having strong assertiveness skills improves communication, builds healthy relationships and helps to manage stress. For teens it nur‐ tures confidence and produces a better un‐ derstanding of those around you. Practise being assertive from now on and you will find this will help you not only in school, but college, university, in the workplace and also in relationships.

Home-made face scrubs Mechanical exfoliants contain

ALL-YEAR sun protection and a good cleansing routine are es‐ sential for keeping the skin healthy, but exfoliating is also an important yet often forgotten part of skincare.

Our epidermis is made up of millions of layers of cells. When cells die, they remain on the skin and make it look dull. Using an exfoliating scrub at least once a week will help to remove dead cells and impurities and increase collagen and elastin production.

Beauty treatments do not need to be expensive, as perfect‐ ly good results can be achieved with natural ingredients that you already have at home. There are many types of exfoliating scrubs on the market, but the two most common are mechanical exfo‐ liants and chemical exfoliants.

For example, oatmeal is a mechanical exfoliant that is suit‐ able for sensitive skin as it is gen‐ tle, soothing and anti‐inflamma‐ tory. Chemical exfoliants may be more aggressive on the skin, and you should consult a specialist beforehand. Citrus fruits contain alpha‐hydroxy acids, which are excellent natural chemical exfo‐ liants for blemished skin, al‐ though they may cause a sting‐ ing sensation and are not suitable for sensitive skin.

I THINK it’s fair to say the season of 2022 has begun!

There is a sense of relief and excitement amongst all our wonderful friends in hospitality.

The Easter weekend boasted high occupancy in our hotels, along with bars and restaurants and our nightlife full to capacity.

er I think we all have a little spring in our step. What better thing to do than catch up with our girlies at one of our fabulous ladies lunches.

Ladies lunches are a fan‐ tastic way to network and meet new people here on the Costa del Sol. One lady who is very busy organising these events is Anne O’Hal‐ loran Ryan.

This month we can look forward to another Costa Women’s event, hosted by Anne O’Halloran Ryan, on Tuesday, May 3 at Divot Grill restaurant Neuva An‐ dalucia. A three‐course lunch is €25.00 and includes a fashion show.

ON Saturday, May 7 the Darkness into Light event will take place.

This year it is expected around 200,000 people from around the world will take part in Pieta’s dawn walk to raise funds to fight suicide and self‐harm.

The Pieta charity was established in Co Dublin in 2006, three years later 400 walkers took on the Phoenix Park and this year 200,000 will take part around the world.

The Costa del Sol was very well repre‐ sented last year and this year we are hopeful will be even bigger.

Who knew?

HAVE you ever tried on clothes and wondered what is going on; they are either a very small fitting or very large and leave you wondering if you have got the wrong size or put on or lost weight. Well I have a little tip.

Zara have a little symbol on their clothes tags which may explain their sizing.

On the tag beside the size there will be a circle, a square , or a triangle. A circle indicates the gar‐ ment runs large, a triangle indicates the garment runs small, and a square indicates it is a true to size fit.

English stand-up ENGLISH language stand‐up returns to the Costa del Sol this June organised once again by the Stand‐Up Come‐ dy Spain group.

Spreading its wings from the original Estepona Louie Louie venue, the shows will take place in Estepona, So‐ togrande and Gibraltar over a period of three days.

First on Wednesday June 8, the show returns to Louie Louie, followed on June 9 by Fresco Marina in Sotogrande and then on Friday June 10 it makes its first stop in Gibraltar at the Ivy Sportsbar.

much praise for last year’s performance at the Marbella Arena with the Malaga Symphony Orchestra, popular singer Maxwel brings his live band to the Benal‐ madena Auditorium

Don’t expect Paul to come on stage with huge glasses, platform boots and feathers as this isn’t a tribute, but a celebra‐ tion of one of his favourite performers and many have com‐ pared his voice to that of Sir Elton, but he is a musician and performer in his own right and has created some new ar‐ rangements to suit his style.

Having supported such stars as Michael Bolton, Tony Hadley, Lionel Richie, Simply Red, Seal, George Benson and many others he has proven how good he is, but this new show which is touring Spain has giv‐ en him a new audience.

COLLEGIUM MUSICUM returns to Marbella with a Requiem performance in honour of late conductor Annemarie Philipps.

After several years of inactivity and the sad loss of long serving conductor Annemarie Philipps who passed away in September of last year, the Choir and Orchestra of the Col‐ legium Musicum Costa del Sol are back per‐ forming.

May 1 would have been Annemarie’s 73rd birthday and in honour of her memory, there will be a very special performance at the Igle‐ sia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación in Marbella Old Town starting at 9.30pm.

Then on Sunday, May 8, the Requiem will be repeated at 8pm in the Salon Real of Hotel IPV Palace & Spa in Fuengirola, but instead of the violin concerto they are delighted to intro‐ duce Guillermo Ramírez Ortega, a young vir‐ tuoso pianist from San Pedro who will be per‐ forming a movement of Mozart’s 23rd Piano concerto.

The dreaded Renta. All online, not a gestor or visit to the good folk at the Hacienda in sight.

My son will receive a rebate (hooray) but I, however, owe them money (Boo! How? I have one job which is taxed at source.).

True it is a nominal sum but still…

Thankfully the process for filing tax returns online in Spain is now much easier than it was 15 years ago.

When I first filed my own returns one had to download a complicated bit of software and try to negotiate a dense, terminological jungle of scary and impenetrable tax speak… in Spanish.

Now, however, one can even file the return in English. I kid you not.

English! In the past the thought of filing made me sweat with terror and consider the pros and cons of

Death and taxes, as the saying goes, can never be avoided, and for the most part nor should they (al‐ though, I would much prefer not to be in the room when it happens, as Woody Allen once said) tax is there

to pay for the infrastructure of our privileged lives; hospitals, schools, pensions etc.

We who work pay tax to save for our own retirements and pay for the pensioners and those less able than us who cannot work. We pay to educate the next generation who will then in turn pay for our pen‐ sions. We pay for light, security and health.

Spain is the country I have chosen to live my life in and the country in which I shall retire, having earned the right to enter into its pension system. So while my taxes support today’s pensioners, so will the taxes of the next generation support my own retirement. Neat and decent and thoroughly human. We work to live and to look after those less for‐ tunate…unless you are a ‘nom dom’.

Billionaires, oligarchs, overpaid and over entitled movie stars, sports stars, CEOs, politicians and their spouses and hedge fund for‐ agers savagely guarding their piles of unimaginable wealth.

They earn more than they will ev‐ er spend in their lifetimes and pay less tax than a sloth minding its own business in a rapidly defenestrated rainforest.

You and I cannot avoid tax, but it seems that the more you earn the more you can slip by it unnoticed, by taking the dark and dubiously le‐ gal pathways open by extreme wealth. We plebs then are forced to listen while a pampered politician who inherited Daddy’s billions tells us all to stop putting on the heating and wear more jumpers and maybe just get up off your a**e and work; this last a quote from someone born into privilege who’s idea of work is sitting in front of a camera preen‐ ing.

Ultimately and unavoidably, Death, my friend, comes for us all… dressed as a tax collector.

Volleyball and football are popular on Ondarreta Beach, while Zurriola Beach is popular for surfing and sunbathing. The fourth beach is Isla Santa Clara, a charming and tiny shore that is at the mercy of the tide and features its own natural pools to swim in.

Despite its relatively small size (186,000 inhabitants), international events are also held in San Sebastian. The most famous of these is the San Sebastian International Film Festival, where the town welcomes some of the biggest international celebri‐ ties, actors, film makers and directors.

THEY SHALL REMAIN ANONYMOUS DAVID WORBOYS I WAS never blessed with the greatest intel‐ ligence but, fortunately, I never let this bother me. In some people’s judgement I was considered ‘bright’ while by others I was perceived as thick. But it’s all relative.

I have marvelled at the broad and detailed range of knowledge displayed by the (mostly Cambridge) students, still in their 20s, on ‘University Challenge’. A certain intelligence must be required to absorb, retain and rapidly retrieve and express such informa‐ tion. But intelligence is also about under‐ standing, assessment and judgement. I have come across many people with these at‐ tributes.

I have also encountered people like the Texan I met who believed that Christ and Columbus were English‐speaking Americans.

I should like to add here that I have no rea‐ son to believe any of these anonymous char‐ acters was mentally impaired, as distinct from being as thick as porcine droppings.

I tried to explain to the Texan that his US dollars would have to be changed into D‐

The foreman on a garden development site (not in Texas) asked a worker to bring him a small wheelbarrow. Ten minutes later the worker arrived wheeling a large wheel‐ barrow with a small one inside it. “I asked for one wheelbarrow, not two!” “Did you ex‐ pect me to carry the darned thing?”

I wonder, if I were under extreme pres‐ sure or were distracted by some major issue, could I have thought and acted this way? Or any of us? As we get ‘more mature’, we tend to forget things more frequently; we find it more difficult to concentrate and to commu‐ nicate spontaneously. Strangers probably think we are not very ‘bright’ and they are probably right. Those we know probably de‐ spair of us. And it’s no good saying “I was in‐ telligent when I was your age.”
