DON’T FORGET to go forward one hour at 2am on Sunday

World Water Day THE Department of Envi‐ ronmental Sustainability from the Rincon de la Victoria Town Council has announced a new workshop to mark the occasion of World Water Day as part of the annual Environmental Education Programme called ‘More Sustainability, More Life’. A series of family‐ori‐ ented activities will take place from 11am to 2pm on Saturday March 26 next to the Rincon Tourist Office. Prior regis‐ tration in the activities is not required. Children will have the opportunity to take part in the cre‐ ation of a large mural by adding a sticker in the shape of a drop of water and to learn about ways to save water. “The idea is to carry out a workshop where children can learn in a fun way,” said the mayor of Rincon, Francisco Sala‐ do. “We are fully commit‐ ted to our environment and nature,” he added, and went on to highlight the importance of such awareness‐raising initia‐ tives. The councillor for Envi‐ ronmental Sustainability, Borja Ortiz, added: “With small daily actions, we can help to conserve this re‐ source that is currently so precious and scarce. Using water correctly is every‐ one’s responsibility.”

Patronal festival FROM March 17 to 20, La Herradura had its yearly patronal festival in honour of San Jose for the first time since the start of the pandemic. The festivities ended on Sunday March 20 with a concert by Chema Rivas followed by a party en‐ livened by the group Alalba. The deputy mayor of La Herradura, Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, said: “We are very happy because there has been a huge amount of participation in everything that was organised by the town council, both at the Day Fair and the Night Fair, and in all the activities that were planned for children, youth and adults.” The patronal festival is usually accompanied by rain, but this year it arrived in the middle of the Chema Rivas concert as the festival came to an end, so it had little impact on the rest of the activities, he added.

REFUGEE FAMILIES: Have been provided with medium-term accommodation.

WITH the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the local Ukraini‐ an community in Nerja are desperately looking for medium‐term accom‐ modation providers to help offer housing for refugee families that have arrived in the Nerja, Tor‐ rox and Frigiliana areas for three months plus. They are also seeking sponsors who can offer fi‐ nancial support, no mat‐ ter how little, to help refugees and their host families with costs. On Friday, March 18, the local Ukrainian Com‐ munity, led by Viktor Zolotukhin, arranged for two buses to transport 57 refugees to Nerja. The refugees were tak‐ en to Casa Arts and hotel Las Piedras, both near Viñuela, where they re‐

ceived amazing care from the local community for four days. Emotions were high, with many of the refugees overwhelmed with ex‐ haustion, relief, happiness and, above all, gratitude to the local community. On Sunday and Mon‐ day, March 21, the fami‐ lies were moved to the area where within 10 days, 13 host families had come forward to offer ei‐ ther shared or individual accommodation. The time‐frame that the accommodation is available for ranges from two weeks to three months. The families are now starting the process of try‐ ing to piece together some kind of normality while getting used to new

surroundings in a new country. They are being regis‐ tered both in the health and administrative sys‐ tems and it is hoped that the children will soon be in school. Many business‐ es and clubs have offered support or free services. To offer financial sup‐ port or much‐needed ac‐ commodation, please email Gareth Arnold at: help.ukraine.nerja@gmail .com
