Vaccine study THE Balearic Minister of Health, Patricia Gómez, said, on November 17 during her visit to the vaccination centre currently in Inca that a study by her department indicated that as many as 50 per cent of those not vaccinated in the Balearics were foreigners.

Street names AS part of the programme to promote the use of Catalan, the Deia Council has decided to change the names of some 40 streets in the municipality to Catalan spelling and in some cases will give them female names for diversity.

BULLFIGHTS NO MORE!

ANIMAL charities in Mallorca continue to congratulate the mayor of Alcudia who has confirmed that the island’s oldest bullring will no longer stage bullfights. Traditionally, the ring which was built in 1892 hosted two fights each year in July and August, organised by a long‐ term concession holder, but the bullring has become run down and in need of renova‐ tion. Recently there have been a number of demonstrations against bullfighting and the Balearic Government tried to ban it completely, however was stymied by the National Government, but clearly the Alcudia Council consider that it is empowered to decide who does what in the munici‐

Toy collection WORKING as usual with Caritas Mallorca, the Santanyi Council is appealing to residents to help the No Child Without a Toy campaign which collections gifts for the neediest children in the town. Unlike last year, they are not just appealing for used toys but would be very happy to collect new toys or gifts as well. There will be toy collection points at the Santanyí Town Hall, at the Cala d’Or Tourist Office, at the s’Alqueria Blanca municipal office and the Calonge Parish Hall as the Council is determined to ensure that this Christmas is a happy one for every child in the municipality.
