Cancelada bridges ALTHOUGH the bridge across the A-7 at Cancelada still remains unopened, the Estepona Council has announced that a new bridge and pedestrian walkway that connect the north of Cancelada with Bel-Air by-passing the A-7 have been completed at a cost of €1.8 million which will be of benefit to visitors and around 4,000 residents.

Health card THE Andalucian Government has advocated the creation of a unique Covid passport so that it becomes a ‘single health card’ in Schengen areas that is valid for use in all establishments, and public transport, announced vice president of the Board, Juan Marín.

The Andalucian vice president affirmed that it is a “useful tool” and considered it “normal” to ask for this passport “to go to a restaurant, to football or to get on a plane or train as long as the virus is still with us and it should not be considered something extraordinary.

“It would help us to be more secure in health matters, so displaying this passport would be like showing the DNI when the Guardia Civil or the police stop us, nothing happens, this is the same,” said the vice president.

In addition, Marín highlighted the ease of obtaining and using this passport by having the possibility of downloading it on a mobile phone, thus being able to show it from the device.

This passport would certify that the person is vaccinated twice and would allow people access to any event, such as next season’s football matches in the Spanish League.

Golf for Cudeca Olympic medal for Malaga ON Saturday August 14 there is to be an Alhaurin Golf competition for Cudeca Foundation Benalmadena.

Benjamin Kamu has organised this tournament at the Alhaurin Golf Club in memory of his mother who passed away in October last year and was cared for by Cudeca Hospice.

“Without Cudeca’s help, my mother would not have lived her last six months with her children. Without Cudeca Hospice my mother would never have found her peace and tranquillity,” commented Benjamin.

After the death of his mother, Benjamin, an haute cuisine chef, decided to dedi-

cate his life to raising funds for gall bladder cancer studies, along with his challenge to change his career at the age of 30 and become a professional golfer, as he promised his mother, who was a very keen golfer herself.

At this charity tournament all proceeds will be donated to Cudeca Hospice.

Bars recover BEACH bars in Malaga are seeing a return to normality and business is booming with advance bookings be‐ ing needed in many places on the Malaga coastline.

The beach bars are recov‐ ering up to 70 per cent of what they lost last year in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Some beach bars have even advised customers to book tables days in advance to ensure there is space.

This proof should be an EU Digital Covid Certificate for Europe, digital or paper certificate, showing you’ve had a full course of a European Medical Agency approved vaccination.

“As a precaution against the prevalence of the virus and variants in Spain, the UK is encouraging people travelling from Spain to use a PCR test for their pre-departure test,” the embassy added.

Energy efficiency THE Ministry of Development, Infrastructure and Land Management has put out to tender three actions to improve energy efficiency in housing developments for rent in the centre of Malaga. The tender covers 109 homes for rent, owned by the Andalucian Housing and Rehabilitation Agency, which will benefit from improvements thanks to European funds.

The new tenders are budgeted at €568,111 and bids must be submitted by September 21. The aims to improve energy efficiency in order to reduce energy consumption in homes and contribute to the fight against the risk of energy poverty and social exclusion.

Unexpected donation AT the start of lockdown, branch members of the Coin Royal British Legion, Stan and Susan Skinner decided they would put the money they routinely spent on raffle tickets into their home Poppy Box. Sadly, Stan passed away on April 2 this year and countless dreams and aspirations went with him, but Stan had a buck‐ et list and at the top of that list was a 70th birthday celebra‐ tion with his closest friends and family.

rot cake and decorated it with poignant items Susan had col‐ lected from Bonnie Scotland.

On Stan’s birthday the group held a wonderful meal in his memory and John organised a

cake collection. Remarkably the group donations totalled €250 and that went into the Poppy Box too.

Susan continued to add €5 a week to the poppy box be‐ cause she knew that is what Stan would have wanted and this June, she decided to hand the Poppy Box to the branch treasurer and he was aston‐ ished to discover Susan and Stan had accumulated €509.28.

When asked if she thought that was a lot of money to hand over, she simply said with a tear in her eye “it was what Stan would have wanted.”

Animal adoption drive FUENGIROLA Council has announced a drive to increase and encourage animal adoption by of‐ fering free vaccinations and other vet bills.

The council said: “The month of August is the period of the year with more abandonments and the Department for Health is calling to prevent this.

Councillor for Health, Francisco Javier Garcia Lara, spoke about the work that is carried out from the Municipal Zoo Park.

He said: “The Zoo Park is the place where those

Plaza Mayor expansion DURING an extraordinary session on Friday morning (August 6), of the Plenary of Malaga City Council, the green light was given for the urban planning agreement between Malaga City Council and the Plaza Mayor Shopping, SA for the second phase of the proposed expansion project of Plaza Mayor Shopping and McArthurGlen Designer Outlet.

This is a project with an investment of €105 million, which is expected to create around 500 new jobs, and also involve the creation of a 53,725m² car park, next to the San Julian neighbourhood, with improvements and expansion work included on the Golf Course road.

The agreement will allow for an increase in the current 10,000m² plot, to be expanded to cover 12,725.5m², and includes a change of use, from leisure to commercial, in the area that was known as ‘Plaza Brava’.

DAVID STEELE, European Tour player and former golf professional raised €150,000 for two Costa del Sol charities.

His aim was to play 324 holes of golf over 18 rounds during daylight hours at El Higueral, Be‐ nahavis.

In fact, Golf Marathon Man David managed to play 396 holes over 22 rounds in 14 hours, 37 minutes and 55 seconds and shot his age ‐ 65! His average score was 73.23 and he took 1,611 shots David smashed his fundraising goal of €50,000 and the total now stands at just over €150,000 for two very worthy charities here on the Costa del Sol: AECC Marbella, a cancer chari‐ ty, and Centro Contigo in La Linea, a charity for dis‐ advantaged children and their families.

He recently met with Sister Joaquina and other members of the Centro Contigo at the San Roque Club and presented them with a cheque for €75,000, half of the mon‐ ey he had raised from his feat of endurance and this sum will more than meet the annual costs of the charity.

€51 million tender THE Junta de Andalucia has put out a €51 million tender for the expansion and reform work of the Costa del Sol Hospital in Mar‐ bella. The tender which was published on August 11 is being funded by the Costa del Sol Health Agency, for a total of €51.7 million.

The regional president, Juanma Moreno, had announced in May that the hospital’s long‐awaited expansion work would fi‐ nally be put out to tender this summer and now this milestone has been reached. The objective, Moreno said, was “to convert the Costa del Sol Hospital into a state‐of‐the‐art infrastructure” and for that reason, €25 million had been spent to rescue the contract for the works which have been at a standstill for more than a decade.

Helping the coast Plans to boost luxury tourism from Front page »

THE organisation, Costa del Sol Tourism, said it wants to attract Middle Eastern tourists to boost the luxury tourism sec‐ tor.

Margarita del Cid, CEO of Costa del Sol Tourism, said officials will push Malaga in the Middle Eastern markets “and reacti‐ vate trust and the flow of visitors among this highly appreciated and important clientele ahead of the summer season.”

The body is also working on attracting travellers from the UK and Russia.

The news comes after Marbella Council announced it is putting aside €10 million to attract tourism.

The council said the funding will be used to improve tourism in Marbella.

Marbella Council has now opened the

period to locals to put forward their ideas on how the funding can be used.

The ‘Tourist Plan for Large Cities’ will be open to the public for their suggestions.

Councillor for Tourism, Laura De Arce, said it was “a key element in the munici‐ pal strategy for the reactivation of the sector, after the crisis generated by the pandemic.”

She added that council will accept ideas from “the most representative organisa‐ tions such as unions, businessmen, con‐ sumers, residents, groups of people with disabilities, LGTBI people, environmental‐ ists and the economy.”

The plan will be given €10 million, fund‐ ed by Marbella Council and the Junta de Andalucia in an effort to improve tourism.

Best to get a third jab.

PEOPLE over 65 years old, who have been vaccinated and have had Covid have been found to have high levels of antibodies, which protect them three months after having been vaccinated.

Unfortunately, over 65s who have not had Covid as well as having been fully vaccinated, their immunity drops. A study revealed that these people need to be vaccinated with a third dose.

Third jab plans Buenaventura Clotet, the author of the study spoke to the Espejo Publico programme and explained. “Our study, carried out on 100 people over the age of 65, shows that those who have re‐ ceived the vaccine but have not previ‐

ously had the disease have a lower re‐ sponse than those who have had the disease and have been vaccinated,” she said.

EU visa Our readers think English is required harder to learn than Spanish BRITISH holidaymakers will have to hand over €7 every three years as part of the European Union’s new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) if they want to enjoy a continental break. The system will come into force by the end of 2022. It is thought that the fee could apply to around 40 million people but 95 per cent of travellers are expected to be approved automatically. “The ETIAS authorisation will cost €7, which will be a one-off fee, and will be valid for three years and for multiple entries,” said the European Commission.

EU bureaucrats insist the system will be straightforward with an easy to fill in online form. “The process will be simple, fast and affordable,” the Commission added.

ALMOST 56 per cent of our readers think that English is harder to learn as a foreigner than Spanish.

Despite most of the people who took part in our online survey being English speakers, they admitted that for a foreigner, English is probably harder to learn than Spanish is for them. Just over 38 per cent consider that Spanish is harder and the re‐ maining participants said that both languages are equally hard. One reader said “I am German and would say they are both of a similar level of difficulty,” while another reader said that it “depends on how old you are.”

It seems that for those who find

learning Spanish difficult, the verbs are the main culprits, with one read‐ er saying “to simply communicate well, English is harder, but to read and write perfectly and at a higher

level; Spanish. Those verbs are killers.” Another said that the most difficult thing for her about Spanish is “I can ask questions, but have no idea of the answer!”

Mothers’ employment gap THE presence of children in the household affects the employ‐ ment rate of men and women differently and women with chil‐ dren in Spain most likely to unemployed compared to other mothers with children in the EU. Overall, 72.2 per cent of women and 90.0 per cent of men with children aged 25‐54 were employed in the EU in 2020. In that same age category, but for people with no children, wom‐ en had a higher employment rate (76.8 per cent), while men had a lower employment rate (80.9 per cent).

‘Tears of San Lorenzo’ Perseids shower

Medicinal Cannabis Bill 2021 ON August 6, the Government in Gibraltar published a Bill for an Act to make provisions for the regulation of the production, import, export, marketing and supply of cannabis for medici‐ nal purposes.

The publication of this Bill follows the announcement by the Minister for Public Health in this year’s Budget debate.

The Government is keen to support the efforts of the pri‐ vate sector by establishing the appropriate legal and regulato‐ ry architecture in order to create a robustly regulated medici‐ nal cannabis industry. It has spared no effort in ensuring that the proposed Bill creates the potential for a new industry that is regulated fully in compliance with the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961, as amended from time to time.

It is the strict policy of the Government that only the most reputable businesses will be licensed under the proposed new regime and licensed businesses will therefore need to conduct their operations fully in compliance with the statutory licens‐ ing framework.

AUGUST in Spain means the hottest and busiest time of the year, but from a meteorological point of view, it is the month during which the most anticipated annual natural phenomena occurs - the Perseids shower, a rain of shooting stars, popularly known as the ‘Tears of San Lorenzo’, for its proximity to the holiday of the Spanish martyr of the same name.

This shower actually began on July 17, but the peak of the showers is expected to be tonight, Thursday August 12, between the hours of 9pm and midnight.

In order to observe the Perseids clearly, and with the bare eye, you are advised to find an observation point that provides a dark sky, with few obstacles to impair your view, such as buildings, mountains, or trees, with the National Geographic Institute recommending not to use any optical instruments such as telescopes, or binoculars, as they limit your maximum field of vision. The tears of San Lorenzo can still be seen until August 24, in some capacity.

ENLIGHT Renewable Ener‐ gy has signed an agree‐ ment to acquire a portfo‐ lio of photovoltaic solar energy projects, in several stages, that are currently under development in Spain, with potential ag‐ gregate capacity of ap‐ proximately 490 MWdc. The portfolio is made up of 10 projects in Andalucia

Solar energy deal and Valencia which have some of the best radiation in Spain, and supplements the location of the pro‐ jects the company is building and developing in Spain, currently in the

Castilla La Mancha region.

The projects are held through special purpose companies, which at this stage hold most of the rights to the land for con‐ struction of the projects and the approvals to con‐ nect to the electricity grid.

“This is another expan‐ sion of our portfolio of projects in Spain, which

already includes the largest wind farm in Spain which is in advanced stages of construction, as well as another 800MWdc in development. The new portfolio, which already secured grid connection rights to the national elec‐ tricity grid, will add signif‐ icant solar power in high‐ radiation areas and will diversify our production sources in the Iberian re‐ gion,” said Zafir Yoeli, En‐ light’s senior vice‐presi‐ dent for business development.

Start-up success THE Minerva Programme, an accelerator promoted by the Ministry of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge and Universities together with Vodafone, has promoted a total of 183 start‐ups since its creation almost a decade ago.

These initiatives have already invoiced almost €11 million in 2020, 41.6 per cent more than in 2019.

The 80 per cent of companies accelerated by Minerva comes to market their products and services at the end of the programme.

Some 40.3 per cent of start‐ups that reach the commercialisation phase have been able to sell their innovative solutions outside of Spain.

Almost half of these start‐ups have sold digital services or products oriented to companies and 46.5 per cent have developed business models based on the end consumer.

Ryanair leaves Southend RYANAIR have an‐ nounced that the London Southend Airport will no longer be home to one of their bases from Novem‐ ber 1, this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pan‐ demic.

Ryanair have been based at the airport lo‐ cated in Essex after they signed a five‐year agree‐ ment and they have been there since 2018.

The global travel indus‐ try has been hit by the ongoing coronavirus pan‐ demic but tourism is re‐ turning. Ryanair is not the only travel operator to have been hit by the pandemic which saw non‐essential air travel halted in the UK for months.

The London based air‐ port is run by Esken Ltd. “Esken, the aviation and energy infrastructure

group, has today been in‐ formed that Ryanair has stated its intention to close its base at London Southend Airport with ef‐ fect from the start of the winter season this year,” said the company.

“As a result, Ryanair will cease operations based from London Southend Airport from November 1.

“Esken is currently in the process of reviewing the impact of such deci‐ sion on its forecasts.

“However, the finan‐ cial impact of Ryanair’s base closure will be miti‐ gated by a reduction in costs directly associated with serving Ryanair’s base and the low level of passengers expected dur‐ ing the winter season.

“Esken will provide a further update as soon as it is able.”

Animal abuse investigated SEPRONA officers are investi‐ gating a man in Sevilla, after he was found to be in possession of a horse that was in a poor state of health.

On July 21 the officers learned of the existence of a horse in poor condition, which was at the entrance of a ware‐ house located in the Los Llanos Business Park, and upon paying a visit, they discovered the presence of an adult horse, at the exterior entrance of a me‐ chanical workshop, clearly in very poor hygienic sanitary conditions.

The animal was lying on the ground, without being able to get up, and with a marked state of nervousness, even putting his head underneath one of the parked cars as it did not have shade to shelter in the 38 degree heat.

It was revealed that the ani‐ mal was in a state of cachexia, with dyspnea, and with very high cardiac activity, so the vet‐ erinarian proceeded to eu‐ thanise the animal in order to avoid further suffering.

Half of EU overweight MORE than half of Europeans are overweight and the less educated are most likely to be pre-obese or obese. In Spain, just over half of men are overweight, while just less than 50 per cent of women are overweight.

While 45 per cent of adults living in the EU had a normal weight, slightly more than half (53 per cent) were considered as overweight (36 per cent pre-obese and 17 per cent obese) and almost 3 per cent as

Johnny Depp to Spain and Med receive Donostia countries worked IN something which is considered a contro‐ versial decision, the film festival has decided to give the Donostia Award to actor Johnny Depp. The award is a lifetime achievement award and honours ‘outstanding contribu‐ tions to the film world.’

The decision is somewhat controversial due to the fact that last year a judge ruled that Depp had assaulted Amber Heard, his ex‐ wife, on more than one occasion.

The award will be presented on September 22, at the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebas‐ tian.

SPAIN, Greece and Italy worked the least hours during the Covid-19 pandemic, EU statistics reveal.

In 2020, the number of actual hours worked in the main job in the EU decreased by 12 per cent when compared with 2019. This decrease can be explained by the measures taken in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which led many people to alternate between periods of work and periods of absence from work in 2020.

As a result, more people worked fewer hours than usual and were absent from their jobs.

At the national level, there was a decline in hours worked across all Member States.

The highest declines were recorded for Greece -19.7 per cent, Spain -19.5 per cent, Portugal and Italy both 19.0 per cent.

Can you sunburn your eyes? of Specsavers Ópticas Marbella, said: “Sunburned eyes, which can also be known as photoker‐ atitis or snow blindness, hap‐ pen when you are overexposed to harmful UV rays without the correct eye protection. This can

occur when sunlight reflects off concrete, sand, water and snow. The overexposure to your eye damages the cornea’s outer layer, temporarily causing it to become inflamed and sore.

“As well as potentially dam‐ aging your vision, sunburn also increases your risk of skin can‐ cer. In particular, basal cell car‐ cinoma, which commonly de‐ velops on areas most exposed to the sun, such as your face ‐ including your eyelids and the skin around the eye.”

• How do you know if your eyes are sunburned?

Tom said: “When your eyes are sunburned it can feel quite painful. Your eyes will go red or appear bloodshot and may also water. While they will feel very itchy it is important not to rub or scratch them as this could worsen the problem.”

He added: “Depending on the extent of the damage and sunburn, symptoms should ease within 24 to 48 hours.

Moisturising eyedrops can also help with the healing process.

“Other symptoms also in‐ clude blurred vision, sensitivity to light and the feeling of grit or sand in your eyes.”

• How can you treat sun‐ burned eyes?

Tom’s advice is to: • Swap your contacts for sunglasses: Taking out your contact lenses will help to avoid further irritation, while sun‐ glasses will help to protect eyes while they heal.

• Stay inside: It is best to stay indoors while symptoms sub‐ side to avoid any further dam‐ age to your eyes.

• Cool down: Placing a cold

compress or a fresh, damp cloth over closed eyes will help cool the eyes down and ease symptoms.

• Avoid itching: While it can be difficult, try to avoid rubbing or itching eyes as this will make them worse.

• See your optician: If none of this helps and eyes continue to feel sore for more than 48 hours, make sure you see your optician to check your eye health.

Protecting eyes from the sun ‐ “The best way to protect your eyes from the sun is through wearing a good pair of sun‐

glasses with UV protec‐ tion,” said Tom. “Look for glass‐ es carrying the CE mark, or the British Standard (BS EN ISO 12312‐1:2013), as this ensures they match up to the appropri‐ ate safety standards. We rec‐ ommend polarising lenses for full UV protection, less glare and blocking out the difficult re‐ flections from flat and shiny surfaces such as water.

“Wearing a wide‐brimmed hat can also help shade your eyes and protect your face. It is also really important that when you are spending time out‐ doors that you never look at the sun directly as this can damage your eyes.”

Spain fights fires THE EU Civil Protection Mechanism, including Spain, is chan‐ nelling support to help combat unprecedented forest fires in Greece and the rest of the Mediterranean. Following requests from Greece, North Macedonia, Albania, Italy and Turkey, the European Union has now helped mobilise 14 firefighting planes, three helicopters, some 1,300 rescuers and 250 vehicles.

In Greece alone, nine planes, close to 1,000 firefighters and 200 vehicles were currently being deployed. The latest offers over the weekend came from France, Germany, Poland, Austria and Slovakia, who were sending ground firefighting units. They will join forces already operating in the country including ground firefighting units from Cyprus, France, Czechia and Ro‐ mania as well as planes from Cyprus, Sweden, France, Croatia and Spain.

Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic said on August 9, “We are mobilising one of Europe’s biggest ever com‐ mon firefighting operations as multiple fires affect several countries simultaneously. This shows the need to prioritise cri‐ sis response also at European level.”

Snickers ditch advert SNICKERS have decided to ditch their ice cream advert in Spain following a homophobia outcry.

The Snickers advert has been shown both in Spain and online, and was released only a few short weeks after 24‐ year‐old Samuel Luiz was killed in an attack which was considered homophobic.

The ad showed Aless Giba‐ ja, a Spanish influencer eating a Snickers before changing in‐ to a man with a beard. The ad‐ vert slogan read: “You’re not yourself when you’re hungry.”

The State Federation of Les‐ bians, Gays and Bisexuals took to Twitter to condemn the ad‐ vert and said: “It is shameful

“We take equal rights seri‐ ously, we want a world where everybody is free to be them‐ selves and we believe that we have a responsibility to play our part in creating that world.

“We will take the opportu‐ nity to learn from this mistake and do better in the future.”

Poor show

FOLLOWING investigations by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Cus‐ toms, a total of £2.1 million was found to be owed to over 34,000 workers by John Lewis, The Body Shop and others.

The breaches took place be‐ tween 2011 and 2018 and employ‐ ers have since been made to pay back what they owed, and were fined an additional £3.2 million. The investigation found that 47 per cent of named employers wrongly de‐ ducted pay from workers’ wages, including for uniform and expens‐ es, 30 per cent failed to pay work‐ ers for all the time they had worked, such as when they worked overtime and 19 per cent paid the incorrect apprenticeship rate.

“Our minimum wage laws are there to ensure a fair day’s work gets a fair day’s pay. It is unaccept‐ able for any company to come up short. All employers, including those on this list, need to pay workers properly,” said Business Minister Paul Scully.

Minimum wage breaches can occur when workers are being paid on or just above the mini‐ mum wage rate, and then have deductions from their pay for uni‐ form or accommodation.

Stop summer food waste MORE wasted food is thrown out during the summer months than in autumn and winter and the government is urging people in Spain to take extra‐care to buy and use food sensibly.

Three out for four households in Spain throw out more food in the summer than they do during winter and the government is reminding consumers of the ‘Nothing is thrown away here’ campaign that was that it launched in June to combat waste throughout the food chain.

According to the government, “In the summer season there is worse management in food use due to factors such as heat, va‐ cations and more leisure time.”

Some 23.1 per cent of the food thrown away between spring and summer is cooked, a percentage that drops to 17.2 per cent in autumn and winter.

Over 42 per cent of households throw away prepared dishes in the summer , compared to 38.1 per cent in autumn and winter.

In our recent online survey, 28.5 per cent of participants claimed to be dog people and 28.5 per cent said they were cat people, while the remaining 43 per cent said they couldn’t choose between the two.

The number of pets has been on the rise in the past few years, and according to the Pet

Food Industry National Association (ANFAAC) there are more than 28 million pets in Spain.

In fact, in Madrid alone there are more dogs and cats than there are children aged under 10, and in the rest of Spain, there are now more homes with animals than with babies.

WHEN people head off on holiday they normally intend to get to the airport early, but in one epic fail a woman arrived at the airport at 6am to discover that she was a shocking one year early for her flight home after her holiday. The woman had been enjoying a holiday in Croatia and was ready to head back to the UK. She made sure to arrive early at the airport to ensure that nothing could go wrong but she soon found she had made a ‘slight’ error with her flight booking.

Model Alexia Portmann took to TikTok to share her epic airport fail. She claims she ended up stuck in Croatia as she tried to head home to London. The young model showed a video of herself at the airport on TikTok, and it has racked up a shocking number of views. She captioned the video and said: “As if I’ve just gotten to the airport at 6am and my flight turns out to be next year.”

She can be seen on the video as she laughs as she covers her mouth. It seems that she managed to take issue light-heartedly, something which not many people would be able to do.

MY father George was born in 1941 when the Second World War ravaged those near and far.

His father, like all the men in the small town of Bedlington, was a miner married to Florence, the loving mother of Joyce and Baby George.

He had a relatively blissful but unremarkable youth with no money for luxuries, but surrounded by love and happiness.

George’s life changed in his teens when he lost his bold, headstrong mother at an early age and he and his best friend Johnnie ventured forth to seek the spills and thrills of the Lan‐ cashire mill town of Rochdale.

It was meant to be a summer of madness where work ‐ work outside the pit! ‐ was available, so they could paint the town red or as red as a town like Rochdale allowed.

Instead he met and fell in love with his soulmate and life partner.

They were working class teenagers employed in the mill, married with one daughter, but however hard life was for them, they shared a dream. It was a dream that would not come to fruition until 50 years later: to live abroad.

The two youngsters worked and saved, worked and saved as people did in those times. “Never a lender or borrower be” was their chant.

Their savings grew and they bought their first house outright ‐ no mortgage for them ‐ and on they progressed.

George’s wife was a rural sub‐postmistress and he went daily to the garage he owned alongside his brother‐in‐life of decades.

Always harbouring his dream to live abroad, always visualising and manifesting his future whilst living the life that would pro‐ vide for the future.

George, my Dad, was always the one to go to in a time of crisis.

“Nothing is forever, bairn,” he would say (to this day I am still his bairn). “Everything will seem better after a good night’s sleep.”

He was the soother of the family. He never crumbled.

“Now bairn, worse things happen at sea. There is always someone worse off than us.” These were his mantras.

The love‐struck teenagers were now in their late 50s and their greatest gift, which today seems to be in short supply, was their ability to graft.

They still enjoyed life, spending each weekend at the lakes although my Dad was never a confident swimmer, but his atti‐ tude is still the same to this day: “Face your fear and do it any‐ way.”

They entered their 60s and made an obvious choice, given that their daughter, son‐in‐law and the father of their adored grandson had migrated to Spain. We were one of the first dysfunctional families, but it works for us.

When he was in 70s, George, with his sweetheart

of over 60 years at his side, made Mijas his home.

His life was everything he had dreamed of for 50 years or more. He became a seasoned traveller and his confidence in himself knew no bounds, because he has never been limited by a mere number like age.

He walked down the red carpets of Marbella, Venice and Cannes and when questioned if he felt inferior because of his class, he laughed heartily.

“Bairn, every man is equal. The fact I am here is as much testimony to me, George, as it is to him, Russell,” he said, refer‐ ring to the man in front of him, Russell Crowe.

Nothing ever fazes my Dad or shocks him and he always seems to know the right answer.

He is self‐taught but his knowledge knows no bounds. He no longer drinks at the fountain of youth, but he is most definitely the fountain of knowledge.

He was living his dream whilst proving that it is never too late, that dreams are there to be fulfilled, it’s up to you to make them happen.

Then on March 14, 2020 the State of Alarm was declared.

George’s position as protector was ripped away from him but like all of his generation, he obeyed the letter of the law.

Along with so many others, the sweethearts were locked in their home alone. He stopped going out, even to the supermar‐ ket: “The bairn can get it and drop it in the garage.”

Birthdays came and went, milestones were put to one side.

George goes out now but very tentatively. His beloved Mer‐ cedes, which he refuses to change, takes him to the local super‐ markets, restaurants or cafes, but there is no exploring and no taking risks.

A fragment of his dream remains grasped in his fingers and he is not letting go.

But the time has come when my Dad George, a real‐life be‐ liever of “Dream it hard it and you will get it” is not celebrating the moment.

He is not going to see his beloved mate from the clubs, Tom Jones, or the magnificent Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra with Paul Maxwel.

He is not frequenting his favourite haunts of El Oceano or The Beach House and is in residence with his loved one of decades, thinking of the life he has lived.

The bairn and all the family here ‐ not big, but enough ‐ want our dream‐maker to make memories on this joyous occasion.

So please allow me to say in great big words “DAD WE LOVE YOU ‐ THANK YOU” and let us celebrate your 80th in style.

“It is nothing more than you have given all of us over the years, hope and belief that dreams do come true. If Carlsberg made Dads, they would have made you.”

Rural depopulation documentary A NEW 20‐episode reality TV show, Ruralmind, about Spain’s rural villages will be aired on YouTube and Twitch in October.

It will feature 40 contestants who must launch and develop ideas to tackle depopulation in villages with less than 5,000 in‐ habitants.

The show’s co‐founder, Patricia Garcia Gomez, said the goal was to radically change people’s views of rural life: “We see the village as a place for rural tourism and agriculture, but never as a 21st‐century village, a place where start‐ups of all kinds can be launched.”

The contestants will be sent to three villages in northern and central Spain that have a decreasing population where business plans will be made, with the help of mentors. The contestants will eventually be whittled down to three win‐ ners who will each receive seed money of €3,000 (£2,550), with the hopes of showing a new perspective on rural life.

“There are thousands of new businesses that can be launched from small villages that didn’t exist 50 years ago,” Gomez said, pointing out companies that use technology to monitor livestock or are focused on social media marketing, “That’s what we want to convey,” she continued.

Alejandro Hernandez, the show’s other co‐founder, said: “We’re always looking for the next Silicon Valley, but perhaps in the rural world, you can be just as innovative or even bet‐ ter.”

Prison without bail A 77-YEAR-OLD man was arrested by the National Police after opening fire on a man who was trying to enter his house in the dark.

The detainee allegedly used his hunting shotgun to kill a 35-year-old man at his house in Ciudad Real.

The elderly man has been provisionally charged as the alleged perpetrator of the death. The court ordered that the elderly man be remanded into custody without bail.

The alleged homicide is still being investigated but National Police sources have explained that the el-

derly man heard noises in the early hours of the morning. When he went to investigate the source of the noises, he saw a person next to his house trying to force entry in the dark. He used his hunting shotgun to fire a series of shots before calling the National Police.

As reported, officers from the “National Police and the Local Police of Ciudad Real went to the house, as well as a mobile ICU, whose crew could only certify the death of the man who had been shot”, according to emergency services 112.

Other countries stepped in to help as best they could, and air support was sent in from France and Greece. Sadly though over 20,000 hectares of land were destroyed.

Fake kidnapping A 51-YEAR-OLD woman has been investigated by the Guardia Civil in Oviedo for faking her own kidnapping in the town of Piloña, in As‐ turias.

The woman had allegedly been kidnapped on June 20, and was reported missing by her daughter who rang the

Guardia Civil to say that her mother had been tied up in‐ side a cab lorry by her ex‐ partner.

Officers rushed to the home of the ex‐partner but were able to verify that the woman was not in the cab of his lorry and that he had not kidnapped her. The offi‐

15 dogs abandoned every hour ACCORDING to data collected by the RSCE and based on figures from the Affinity Foundation, 15 unidentified dogs are abandoned in Spain every hour. The RSCE has said that this means the person who owns the dog cannot be located and will not have to face fines for abandonment. Officers investigated the case thoroughly and discov‐ ered that the events that the woman explained had not actually happened and that she had planned to im‐ plicate her ex‐partner in her kidnapping. She has now been charged for faking her own kidnapping.

High Court decision DOZENS of jihadists could try to return to the UK after a recent High Court ruling. A woman from the north of England, known on‐ ly as D4, had her citizenship taken away from her in 2019 for rea‐ sons of “national security”.

D4 travelled to the Middle East to join Islamic State and she re‐ mains in the same camp in al‐Roj, Syria, that also houses Shamima Begum. A High Court judge found on July 30 that the grandmoth‐ er was wrongfully stripped of her British citizenship. The move to suspend her rights as a UK national was unlawful because the Home Office failed to inform her it was doing so.

Terrorist arrested in Mallorca THE Guardia Civil detained an Algerian man on July 31 in the town of Llucmajor, Mallorca, for terrorism offences.

Their investigation revealed that he led a criminal organisation involved in human trafficking with connections to “facilitating groups” based in North Africa.

Taking advantage of this infrastructure, the suspect facilitated the transfer of combatants from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia to areas controlled

by jihadist factions in Libya, which he in turn financed with funds from his criminal activity.

The operation to detain the suspect was carried out in close cooperation with Interpol and the Algerian authorities. The suspect had multiple passports and travelled frequently, the Guardia Civil said.

The Guardia Civil suspects that the criminal organization he was behind was bringing terrorist fighters from Algeria to Spain.

Separately, Interpol revealed that an organized crime group based in Spain which smuggled migrants by sea from Algeria to the Spanish coast was also dismantled by the authorities in early July.

Law enforcement officials from 47 countries participated in Operation Liberterra and carried out 500,000 inspections at checkpoints and airports as well as at hotspots identified through intelligence and investigations around the world.

Aviation market rebounds

AS of the start of August, Spain is the biggest aviation market in Europe ranked by scheduled seat capacity.

It has the number one international market and the number three domestic market, behind Russia and Turkey, making it the biggest domestic market in western Europe.

Before the pandemic Spain was number three in Europe, behind the UK and Germany.

Spain is at 70 per cent of 2019 capacity for August, more than any other leading western European nation and ahead of the Europe-

wide rate of 65 per cent.

The recovery in passenger traffic is lagging behind capacity for Europe as a whole, but the gap may be closing in Spain.

The top three airlines in Spain - Ryanair, Vueling and Iberia - have retained their precrisis rankings and increased their combined seat share from 42.5 per cent to 50.6 per cent.

Ryanair has a 22.1 per cent share versus 16.7 per cent for Vueling and 11.8 per cent for Iberia, but Iberia as a group has 30.3 per cent. IAG's acquisition of Air Europa would take this to 35 per cent.

European funds EARMARKING funds from its Development budget, the European Commission has announced that it will grant more than €1 billion to the autonomous communities of Madrid, Aragon, the Balearic Islands and Extremadura to help strengthen their health facilities which have been put under strain by the pandemic.

Renfe investing SPAIN’S national train operator Renfe has announced that it will spend €35 million to update 44 of its existing trains.

Built by Spanish manufacturer Talgo between 2010 and 2012 the trains still have plenty of life left in them but need to be upgraded to be suitable to provide service on new high-speed lines.

In addition, they will be completely refurbished internally replacing seats, floors and toilets and introducing new passenger information screens as well as better access to WiFi for use while travelling.

This upgraded rolling stock will be introduced over the next three years with some trains ready by the end of 2021.

An eco-friendly digital euro THE concept of digital cur‐ rency has been around for several years and the majori‐ ty of Central Banks including the European Central Bank (ECB) favour an official cryp‐ tocurrency.

The ECB has been review‐ ing the matter for more than nine months and has taken the next step by launching a formal investigation phase of a digital euro project.

“Our work aims to ensure that in the digital age citizens and firms continue to have

access to the safest form of money, central bank mon‐ ey” commented ECB Presi‐ dent Christine Lagarde. The investigation phase will last 24 months and aim to ad‐ dress key issues regarding design and distribution.

A digital euro must be able to meet the needs of Europeans while at the same time helping to prevent illicit activities and avoiding any undesirable impact on finan‐ cial stability and monetary policy.

Politicians, bankers and law enforcement agencies see significant ongoing dan‐ gers with uncontrolled cryp‐ tocurrencies such as Bitcoin, which recently broke the $40,000 (€33,876) barrier as it is an almost untraceable ‘dark’ currency.

In addition to its easy use by criminals, it has seen nu‐ merous people investing in the currency and then not declaring profits when the value goes up, so significant tax income may be lost.

Both the Eurosystem TAR‐ GET Instant Payment Settle‐ ment (TIPS) and alternatives like blockchain could process more than 40,000 transac‐ tions per second.

A digital euro core infras‐ tructure would be environ‐ mentally friendly: for the ar‐ chitectures that were tested, the power used to run tens of thousands of transactions per second is negligible com‐ pared with the energy con‐ sumption of crypto‐assets such as Bitcoin.

You will need the original (or officially stamped) death certificate and proof of payment of the fee for issuing the certificate.

The certificate will show the notary who authorised the will so that a copy can be obtained. If several were made, only the most recent one is valid.

If there is no will, the legal heirs must file an Inheritance Decla‐ ration which will then be authorised by a notary in order to name the legal heirs.

Australian investment THE proposed purchase of just under 23 per cent of the stock in power and gas company Natur‐ gy Energy Group SA has been welcomed by the Spanish Gov‐ ernment. It sees the purchase by Australian IFM Global Infrastruc‐ ture Fund as a sign of interna‐ tional investor confidence in Spain and its economy going for‐ ward. There are conditions as the Spanish Government wants to ensure that staff and invest‐ ment in Spain are maintained and that the company should re‐ main listed on the Spanish Stock Exchange with the clear commit‐ ment to concentrate on renew‐ able energy.

The offer price is now €22.07 per share and the deal can only proceed if approved by Spain’s market regulator CNMV. in particular and this appears to be a potentially ideal solution provided that a source of electric‐ ity is available.

Tory Party Advisory Board funding under the microscope ALTHOUGH there have been well‐documented allegations of corruption in Spanish politics, funding for Spain’s political par‐ ties mainly comes from the pub‐ lic purse.

This was decided in the early days of the new democratic regime in the country and was intended to assist in subsidising, without favour, electoral cam‐ paigns and general running of different political parties.

At that time, ‘top ups’ from private sources were allowed but then were banned unless the donations were made anonymously and this practice was also stopped in 2007.

Almost encouraging elections, it may be surprising to learn that following a general election, each party receives a payment based on the overall number of votes it receives.

In the UK however the situa‐ tion is quite different where po‐

litical parties are funded by membership fees, private, union or corporate donations and to a lesser extent, state funding which is reserved for administra‐ tion costs.

The larger parties in particular are always looking for new methods of funding and it now transpires that for the ‘bargain’ price of £250,000 (€275,000) you can become a member of the relatively unsung Conservative Party Advisory Board.

The Labour Party believes this to be nothing more than a secre‐ tive way of getting to meet Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak with the aim of influencing policy, es‐ pecially as new tax laws are around the corner.

It’s not rocket science

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT IT was with great sadness, and not a little anger that I heard reports of the ever increasing acts of anti‐Semitism in the UK. This greatly persecuted, cultured race of people came to UK shores both during and in the aftermath of the Second World War after the British government and its people offered them both refuge and protection from the tyranny and horrors of Nazi Germany. These beleaguered Jewish immigrants quickly integrated with the indigenous population and proceeded to bring all their expertise, hard work and industrious acumen to bear.

They opened businesses, entered into many professions, including medicine and banking. Many became successful and were ultimately responsible for creating employment for thousands of the resident population. Despite retaining all the trappings of their own faith and developing individual localities for their people, they never in any way attempted to interfere or change the culture of their predominately Christian hosts and indeed the areas they did proudly inhabit became pleasantly middle class, peaceful and trouble free.

ANTI-SEMITISM: Many acts have been recorded.

In other words they were an asset and a shining example of what true diversity and integration is all about. All this of course took place long before many of the immigrants from the Middle East opted to bring their dislike of the Jewish race with them, when they too were offered the sanctuary and benefits of the United Kingdom.

There have now been over 1,300 acts of anti‐Semitism recorded in the first six months of 2021. These have ranged from a convoy of cars filled with Islamists waving Palestinian flags, driving around predominately Jewish areas screaming anti sematic slogans, to a Rabbi seriously injured after being struck over the head

with a brick. This is betraying all the promises and assurances of a safe and peaceful refuge the British people and government offered to these genuine refugees in those dark days of yore.

Many Jewish people are now frightened to go out after dark. Some are wondering if Britain is a safe place any

more and others are actually leaving the country. This is a terrible state of affairs. To expect intelligence insulting Home Secretary Patel, who says all the right words and does absolutely zilch, to London’s Mayor Khan, who, in a recently emerged photo, was shown protesting against the imprisonment of a Jihadist in 2004, to actually make any great effort to resolve this utterly unacceptable state of affairs is, I’m afraid, akin to believing in the tooth fairy.

The lefties of the Labour government and a number of Universities have also been guilty of a whole gambit of anti‐ sematic attitudes and actions. Do you know the most disturbing fact to emerge from all of this? While Jihadists consider the Jewish people their arch enemies, the religion the extremists dislike with an equal passion is Christianity. Untold numbers of fighting fit young men who support these extreme views and beliefs are arriving on British shores every week.

Doesn’t anyone recognise the dangers emerging from this unimpeded state of affairs ‐ a situation that Patel appears unable to control? Not rocket science is it!

So, it won’t be long now before ‘Snow White and the Seven Persons of Short Stature’ will be X‐rated ‐ frightening journey through the forest, the creepy Magic Mirror, the nasty old Wicked Queen/Witch, the vul‐ tures ‐ and then of course there is the treat‐ ment of Little People...

Meanwhile, on Planet Normal: many young teenage boys spend much of their free time

playing violent 18‐rated video games at home. When will this particular is‐ sue be addressed?

Basically, none of this applies to the real world in the era of the Internet and Netflix.

Your average 12‐year‐old will have seen more than the average pensioner in terms of R‐rat‐ ed content. The censors seem to be living in a parallel universe. Another public institution

run by woke liberals? Wokeness/political correctness is slowly killing the arts.

So, presumably ‘Star Wars’ will be remov‐ ing all references to the Empire then? Maybe they should call it ‘The EUnion’ instead?

In conclusion, then, mindless stupidity at best, insane woke‐ ness at worst. To reclassify harm‐ less films, to bow to the ap‐ peasement halfwits, over issues that most people wouldn't even notice, except of course those who are offended by life. What is especially surprising is that people can be offended by anything that they can twist into some anti‐diversity message or de‐ piction and yet turn a blind eye to the appallingly bad language that we have to endure on TV and in films.

The world’s gone bonkers. Please stop it turning so that I can get off now!

The quicker we build a base on Mars (hurry up, Elon Musk!) for all these woke/snowflake bores the better...

ANDALUCIA HEALTH From our Facebook Dear Sirs, You were most helpful earlier in the year and I have another problem which affects all patients of any nationalities trying to visit their health centre.

I received a communication from the Junta de Andalucia back at the end of February concerning the return of face to face consultations with doctors starting on March 2, 2021.

As far as Torrequebrada is concerned one has to run the gauntlet of a private security person before you can cross the threshold and a request to consult the interpreter is often refused. There is little contact with anyone medical at all. In our case we have seen our family doctor once in 17 months. We should not have to give personal info to a non-health worker.

As an example of my own problem, I will bore you shortly with the details.

I went to the chemist to get my monthly supply of medication with my Tarjeta Sanataria to be told it had expired.

No longer do we receive an updated printed list as it is done over the phone!!

I then telephoned my Health Centre only to be told that I can only update the card by going in person!! I caught a bus, (I gave up driving two months ago - I am approaching 85 years old) got to the Health Centre about 4pm only to find that since mid July it shut at 3pm. I returned to the very helpful chemist who offered to book me an appointment if she could. She managed to book me an appointment for an update of my medication for a telephone call between 08.57 and 10.57 on August 11!!! Eight days and a window of two hours to get a card updated - took three minutes back in January. Surely this is not the excellent service we have grown to expect.

I do hope I have not bored you too much but it really is a joke. Nothing important seems to be done there now and if you have aches and pains etc you are pointed in the direction of Urgencias at Benalmadena hospital.

It is not difficult to discover whether there are live musicians, DJs or simply background music at a venue and then you can decide what sort of ambience you prefer.

The success of many restaurants and bars that do offer live music is clear to see and for local councils as well as the layers of government up to that sitting in Madrid, tax income as well as direct and indirect employment is an impor-

Now, I can well understand the companies wanting to show they are not racist, but why only black people. Where are the Chinese? Where are the Indians, the Pakistanis, the Japanese, the Mexicans, the Mongolians??

Why don’t we see any of those people in the adverts. And why so many black people? It’s not as though black people make up a large percentage of the British population.

I think these companies are being racist by using a disproportionate number of black people in the adverts!!

We know that Spain can be a bureaucratic country and it will continue to have this reputation if the edicts are not transparent and crystal clear.

Late night munching risks EATING before bed and midnight snacking dis‐ r u p t s t h e b o d y ’ s i n t e r‐ nal clock and could in‐ crease the risk of cancer, according to a new study.

Spanish scientists have found that people who regularly ate their evening meal after 9pm, or less than two hours before going to sleep, had a 25 per cent raised risk of breast and prostate cancers.

The team, from the In‐ stitute for Barcelona In‐ stitute for Global Health (ISGlobal), said it could be a result of late din‐ ners that force the body’s metabolism to speed up, at a time when it should be wind‐ ing down for sleep.

It follows several ma‐ jor studies looking at the effects of shift work among nurses and man‐ ual workers, with these occupations apparently

at higher risk of prostate and breast cancers.

These types of cancers are closely linked to hor‐ m o n a l c u e s a n d a r e o f‐ ten treated with testos‐ terone or oestrogen‐blo cking therapies.

Hormones are chemi‐ cal messengers that can make us sleepy, hun‐ gry and stressed and are therefore tightly linked to the body’s rhythms ‐ the internal clock set by the day‐night cycle.

Researchers surveyed 1,800 Spanish breast or prostate cancer pa‐ tients, and more than 2,000 people unaffected by the disease, about their eating and sleeping patterns, and any steps they take to keep healthy.

It found cancer pa‐ tients were more likely to be late night snack‐ ers, even after taking in‐ to account other health habits and dietary or

sleep patterns.

Currently internation‐ al guidelines on the pre‐ vention of cancer don’t mention the potential impact of meal times on cancer, though the World Health Organisa‐ tion does list shift work‐ ing.

Studies on the effects of meal disruption on animals have shown ‘profound effects on health’ and the Barcelona group says if more studies replicate their findings there could be a cause for guidelines to be updat‐ ed.

Dr Dora Romaguera, who led the research, said further research in humans is needed in or‐ der to understand the reasons behind these findings, but everything seems to indicate that the timing of sleep af‐ fects our capacity to metabolise food.

Bite back at the mosquito bite MOSQUITO bites are synony‐ mous with the warmer weather, and while most bites are harm‐ less, some can cause complica‐ tions.

Mosquitoes can carry diseases, although the likelihood of being infected depends largely on where you live.

Another rare problem caused by a mosquito bite is a negative reaction to the bite itself.

If you are bitten and develop hives, difficulty breathing, or a swollen throat, con‐ tact a doctor immedi‐ ately.

You may not notice when a mosquito bites you, but the bump the bite leaves behind comes with a persistent itch that can linger for days.

Creams and ointments can help, but you can also beat the itch with things that are probably already lying around your house.

Oatmeal is one remedy. It can relieve itching and swelling be‐ cause it contains special com‐ pounds that have anti‐irritant qualities.

Make a paste by mixing equal amounts of oatmeal and water in a bowl until you have a Polyfilla‐ like substance. Spoon some paste onto a washcloth and hold it,

Cold temperatures and ice can reduce inflammation and numb the skin.

A small drop on an itchy bite can reduce the inflammation.

Aloe vera gel has been shown to have anti‐inflammatory prop‐

erties and can help to heal minor wounds or calm infections. That’s why it may be a good bet for healing a bug bite, too.

Found in virtually every kitchen, baking soda can also pro‐ vide relief from a mosquito bite.

Make a baking soda paste, and you can use it in a similar manner to oatmeal paste. Mix one table‐ spoon of baking soda with just enough water to create a paste.

Apply it to the bug bite, and let it sit for 10 minutes before washing it away.

Alternatively, the juice of an onion can be applied, lemon balm essential oil or witch hazel.

Viral illness soars MEASLES has been sweeping Europe this year with more than 41,000 children and adults being infected in the first six months.

According to European health advisors, at least 37 people have died so far this year from measles, a highly infectious viral illness which can lead to serious complications, such as diar‐ rhoea and vomiting and an eye infection.

A new report has revealed the total number of cases for the first six months of the year has far exceeded the 12‐month totals for every year this decade.

The highest annual total for cases between 2010 and 2017 was 23,927 for 2017 and the low‐ est was 5,273 for 2016.

Salon Varietes is back AFTER months of closure because of the pandemic, the Salon Varietes Fuengirola is back with a crescendo of music.

Boding well for the future, its first show is an All Star Extravaganza featuring some of the theatre’s favourite musicians due for September 5 sold out within 48 hours of tickets going on sale.

Next event is a welcome back to the Abba Experience who have been playing the roles of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad for several years, here on the Costa del Sol. They will of course be performing all of the Swedish superstars’ best known songs in a powerful weekend of music.

The shows take place on September 10, 11 and 12, so tickets need to be reserved as soon as possible bearing in mind that there are currently restrictions on numbers.

The following weekend is time to enjoy some slightly heavier music as there will be three performances of Rock of the Ages featuring local singers Lucy Pardoe and Ollie Hughes.

Heavy Metal Time

AFTER the success of rock events in previous editions of Marenostrum Fuengirola Festival, it’s Heavy Metal Time as Fuengirola welcomes headbangers on August 28 and 29.

Now scheduled for the end of August, no less than 10 bands are due to take part in the Metal Paradise Fest over two nights.

Shortly two day passes at €39 per person plus booking fee will go on sale and maximum number of tickets to be sold to any one person will be eight with prices rising as the dates of the concerts get closer.

Doors will open at 4pm and bands will play until midnight subject to possible changes due to

future restrictions and masks will be mandatory at all times.

The venue is divided into two areas: Front Stage (front part of the stage, standing) with a smaller capacity and General, the rest of the concert space.

Each area has its own entrances, bathrooms, bars, food trucks, etc. and they are independent of each other.

Thrash metal band Kreator from Germany will be headlining one night and Eluveitie, a Swiss folk metal band heading the other night although there will be bands from across Europe and Spain taking part in the event.

ACE quiz afternoon MORE than 70 people attended the fun quiz afternoon for ACE Dog Charity in La Cala de Mijas which took place at Bar Tuta at the end of July.

An unqualified success, the event was hosted by John Sharples and featured a quiz, Name the Dog Competition, Rock ‘n Roll Bingo, plus a Raffle (with fabulous prizes donated by local businesses, personalities, well-wishers and supporters).

There was also a Charity Auction offering the opportunity to bid for a fantastic Inflatable Spa generously donated by Favells and won by a delighted Nico!

The event raised over €1,700 for the La Cala-based charity which, currently taking care of some 450 abandoned and unwanted dogs and more than 100 cats, depends entirely on donations in order to survive.

“It was heart-warming that so many kind and caring people showed their support for our charity and the work we do,” said ACE founder and president Fabienne Paques.

“I would like to thank everyone for coming along to the quiz afternoon, and am particularly grateful to the Bar Tuta team, John Sharples and Favells for making this such a special event,” she added.

BOASTING more than 500 dif‐ ferent items, there is free entry to the Legend of Sports exhibi‐ tion in Fuengirola museum.

Sports fans of all types will revel in this exhibition which brings together a whole collec‐ tion of different objects related to the greatest national and in‐ ternational sports milestones and is especially topical due to the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 6pm to 10pm (plus 10am to 2pm at weekends), the free exhibition will run until September 19 and concen‐ trates on a significant number of popular sports as well as recognising local athletes.

On display are items from

different disciplines such as cy‐ cling (bicycle and yellow jersey from Miguel Induráin’s Tour de France), athletics (Usain Bolt’s gold shoes in Rio 2016), Formu‐ la 1 (Fernando Alonso’s single‐ seaters), basketball (NBA play‐ ers’ jerseys and shoes such as Magic Johnson, Michael Jor‐ dan, Abdul‐Jabbar, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol), tennis (Nadal and Santana), bad‐ minton (Carolina Marín), as well as Olympic torches, among many other objects.

Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari, albeit without an engine is there to be enjoyed and the entire exhibition is supported by a selection of photographic and audio‐visual material.

Celtic Night THE annual Celtic Night returns to the Auditorium in Mijas Pueblo on Saturday August 21 and will receive a warm welcome back.

It is a time to celebrate all that is Celtic which doesn’t just include Ireland and Scotland but incorporates those with Celtic roots from Brittany, Cornwall, Isle of Man and Wales as well as parts of Portugal and Spain.

Asturian pipers Payuela’s Dúo will start the evening off outside the auditorium (where there will be a themed street market from 6pm), then first on stage will be Supervivientes (Survivors) from Granada, very apt considering the problems of the past 18 months.

Drónán from Barcelona are next on stage with Irish style dancers Nuala also from Barcelona. Finally, for a lively ending to the evening, the ever-popular local band Stolen Gnomes from Malaga Province, will perform their unique brand of Folk/Rock.

Lovers of ‘The Black Stuff’ will be pleased to know there will be a dedicated Guinness Bar open from 6pm at the auditorium entrance and hot food in the form of a Hog-Roast as well as Irish and Scottish specialities will be alongside the bar.

There will also be a public bus service between Mijas Plaza Virgen de la Peña and Fuengirola bus station running twice an hour all evening from 7.45pm until 2.10am.

Current Covid-19 rules will be in force - social distance between seats and no dancing - also the wearing of a mask inside the auditorium at all times will be mandatory.

Rock returns ROCK returns as Red Baron land at Es‐ tepona Bullring on September 3 be‐ fore they take off for a number of American dates.

Barón Rojo (Red Baron) were ranked number 18 on Rolling Stone’s ‘50 Greatest Spanish rock bands’ list in 2017 and have been together in one form or other since the 1980s.

The band is led by brothers Carlos and Armando de Castro, who took the name Barón Rojo in homage to First World War German flying ace Man‐ fred von Richthofen and their1981 song Barón Rojo is about him.

The Estepona Bullring played host to Deep Purple in 2008 and since then it has hosted two sets of tribute rock concerts put on by local promoter and former singer with Deeper Purple Ian Grant of Pink Purple Productions.

KILLER WHALES: Their message is clear, we’re interfering. except pronounce words without being mindful of what we’re ac‐ tually doing or saying. For exam‐ ple time cannot be invested or spent like money, nor can you

get it back; there is no such thing as borrowed time. Our todays are all we have and what we do with them our decision.

Time is more precious than

anything else we possess; it’s our essence. Anything that is done with passion is always done well; a life well lived. We’ve become complacent and desensitised, busy with bick‐ ering and presuming, intensely sharing our convictions whilst doing absolutely nothing to sup‐ port them.

The same cannot be said how‐ ever for a pod of orcas, AKA Killer Whales, who are on the rampage in the Straits of Gibral‐ tar. Since March 27 this year there have been 56 reported at‐ tacks on sailing boats by this population of orcas, causing sig‐ nificant damage and much

alarm. In up to 25 cases the Mar‐ itime Rescue services were called and had to tow all boats to port due to the damage caused by the attacks. In an at‐ tempt to prevent more incidents new restrictions have been im‐ posed for sailing vessels of 15 metres in length or less between Cape Trafalgar and Barbate, in an extension of approximately two and nine miles from the coast.

Experts speculate that this un‐ precedented aggressive be‐ haviour of the killer whales in the area is due to their dislike of our renewed interference with their migratory paths; but what‐ ever the reasons, the message is clear: they don’t want us around; we’re interfering with the course of nature.

Football fans’ strict guidelines WHILE Spain is still trying to battle the fifth wave of the coronavirus, this August will hopefully see the return of fans to mass sporting events.

The First and Second Division football season starts at the middle of this month and the matches will once again witness the sound of fans in the stadiums.

According to the agreement signed by the autonomous communities and the Ministry of Health in the Interterri‐ torial Health Council, a series of requirements and limita‐ tions must be observed by spectators if they are to be al‐ lowed to return to the stadiums and sports halls.

These are the most important points of the agree‐ ment: Stadiums and sports halls will have a maximum of 40 per cent of the capacity in outdoor spaces, (football or athletics stadiums).

Preference of entry will be given to club members and away team fans.

Spectators will not be able to purchase, or enter with, food into stadiums and pavilions ‐ they will only be al‐ lowed to drink water to quell the heat. There can be no smoking or use of electronic cigarettes or similar devices.

The approved measures affect all the communities throughout the country and are mandatory, as highlight‐ ed by the minister. All the communities voted in favour of the agreement, with the exception of the Basque Country, which agreed with the measures but abstained over a question of powers.
