Roman Oasis is back! Constantly changing

YOU didn’t honestly think he’d retire for long did you?

Paul Hickling stood in the restaurant a year later and thought how sad it was for such a vibrant place to die. Then he had the idea of Crazy Golf! He had the land and so, 125 sacks of cement, 40 tons of gravel, 20 tons of marble chippings, 23 trees cut down, a lake filled in, two broken ribs, a crushed elbow and a lot of blood spilt on the earth, the course is now a reality.

He has built 18 holes, although after the first nine he thought “I must be mad,” opened the bar again and revamped the restaurant area that was.

Roman Oasis Crazy Golf and Bar is open every day from 10am to the last round of golf at 7.30pm. If people are playing the bar stays open until 9pm, otherwise they close at 8pm and they are closed on Wednesdays.

They will stay open for the season as long as the river allows.

Unfortunately, they are not serving food, however they do of‐ fer snacks like crisps, nuts etc and ice creams. They look for‐ ward to seeing you all!

CRAZY GOLF: Now open for season.

Feria suspended again THE mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, has announced that the annual Malaga fair will be cancelled once more.

“The 2021 Fair is not going to take place, in August, of course, or in September,” he said at a press conference.

The fair was originally going to be postponed from August until September due to the advancement of the Delta variant of Covid.

However, the mayor has now finally announced that with the rise in cases it will not happen at all this year.

However, he has insisted that throughout the summer, musical activities will be held and activities for the elderly are also being considered following such a difficult

year through the health pandemic.

There is also an objective to help the Junta de Andalucia control the wave that is currently happening with cases.

MALAGA FAIR: Is not going to be taking place this year.

Electricity expected to stay high THE price of electricity in Spain continues to skyrocket - setting record numbers on a daily basis. On Tuesday July 21, the cost to consumers hit a new historical maximum when it is surpassed the level of €106 per megawatt-hour (MWh).

Far from being a turning point, prices will continue to rise further in the coming months, warn experts, and will remain at the level of €90 until February next year, when they will begin to lower, although probably ‘very slowly’.

EVERYONE knew something had to be done by the Junta de Andalucia with regards to the increasing rates of infection across the area, but no-one knew what would happen until an announcement was made on July 20.

Sadly however, it is not really easy to understand and the decision may only affect a small number of communities initially, but this could change rapidly.

The Regional Committee of High Impact on Public Health (Committee of Experts), decided to propose the limitation of mobility at night between 2am and 7am in those municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants that present a 14-day cumulative incidence of more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

As far as the Costa del Sol is concerned therefore, only Marbella is immediately affected with this new curfew, but it doesn’t stop anyone travelling in or out of the city during the other 19 hours of the day although in theory it might stop youngsters from partying in public into the very early hours.

Having said that however, because there is no State of Alarm in place, the Junta cannot just impose a curfew for each affected municipality, but has to wait for it to be proposed by the territorial health alert committee for each province before the proposed curfew is submitted to the Superior Court of Andalucia for approval.

The majority of other Costa del Sol towns are heading towards the ‘magic’ 1,000 barrier and already mayors in tourist hot spots are suggesting that it is unfair to equate cases of infection with the number of residents as so many tourists already here, distort the figures.

This is also important as far as the hospitality industry is concerned as there are dif-

ferent restrictions proposed in capacity depending upon what level each municipality is considered to be on.

Currently the majority of municipalities in the Costa del Sol are considered to be on Level 2 of infection, which means that effectively there could be restrictions upon the number of people who can sit together inside a bar or restaurant as well as outside, but despite warning that this could happen, the committee didn’t specify when or what and we will all have to wait until the official bulletin in the Junta de Andalucia Gazette is published.

What has been confirmed is that in the case of nightlife establishments, an entry record will be requested to control the traceability of possible infections. In these establishments, the capacity will be 75 per cent maximum indoors on Level 1 and 50 per cent on Level 2.

Bar service will not be allowed indoors and tables will be occupied by a maximum of four people. Outdoors, only bar service will be allowed on Levels 1, 2 and 3, with consumption having to be restricted to tables.

The Junta has recommended that beaches be closed between 11pm and 7am as well as parks across the region in order to make it more difficult for young people to get together for bottle parties.

As things progress, the restrictions may become stronger with additional reductions in capacity at meetings, although currently there is a simple recommendation not to hold meetings or private parties which contain more than 10 people.

In the meantime, it is recommended that people continue to wear masks whenever in public places and the entire matter will be reviewed in two weeks’ time or before that should the infection situation deteriorate.

Temporary suspension WORRIED by the possible inconvenience to residents and the environmental effects, the Casares Council met and temporarily suspended the installation of photovoltaic (solar) parks and new wind turbines.

It is not opposed to them in principle, but wants to ensure installation is controlled and regimented.

Tourist route THE Estepona Council has designed a new tourist route which takes in a dozen of the most charming spaces in the old town that have been selected because they are some of the most photographed in the centre due to their charm or uniqueness.

Free loungers SUPERMARKET Group Carrefour has donated 12 loungers to the Fuengirola Council which they will share amongst their four beach areas which have been adapted for use by people with reduced mobility. In addition, more large umbrellas have been added to increase shade.

Pool parties MIJAS Council is planning (subject to any upcoming safety and virus restrictions) to reintroduce pool parties every Monday from 8pm at the Osunillas pool in Mijas Pueblo from July 26 until August 16.

Each will be themed and the first will be Hawaiian.

Three Painters THE sixth meeting concerning the problem of the Three Painters hotels took place in Benalmadena on Tuesday, July 20. The complex was closed in 2008, but soon after it was occupied illegally and because ownership of the three properties is not clear, the council’s hands are tied.

Alzheimer’s awareness MIJAS Council has announced it is getting together with local Alzheimer’s associa‐ tions to take part in a drive by the Span‐ ish Alzheimer’s Confederation (CEAFA) to spread awareness among local business‐ es.

Councillors Natalia Martinez said: “There are many things that can sound the alarm to these businesses, such as when they begin to notice that a cus‐

tomer may forget what to buy, repeat the same product twice or when paying they do not know the change, these are symptoms of confusion that help to de‐ tect these cases.”

She said if a business owner notices this they should look “for a relative of that person, normally they usually carry the identification of the relative they can go to.” She said to call the emergency

services if a relative cannot be found.

Maria Carmen Lopez is director of the day centre of the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Patients in Mijas Pueblo where “in addition to attending to these people with a day service until 5pm and workshops, we do outreach work and raise awareness of these diseases so that these people receive the appropriate treatment.”

11 injured in Council praises gastronomic festival car smash OFFICERS from the National Police are now investigating after 11 people were left injured when a car hit several people in Marbella.

Two remain in hospital, one in inten‐ sive care with abdominal injuries, while another has a broken leg.

The incident took place on Monday, Ju‐ ly 19 on Avenida Miguel Cano when a car reportedly hit several people outside a cafe in Marbella.

Health workers, the Local and National Police, and firefighters attended the scene.

The National Police has confirmed that inquiries are being made “to try to clarify the causes of the crash with several wounded.” They have ruled out the ter‐ rorist nature of the incident.

The driver is reportedly a 30‐year‐old Spanish man who was travelling in the car with his parents and he was taken by po‐ lice for alcohol and drug tests where he tested negative.

According to sources, when he stopped the car, the young man put his hands out of the window, pushing away passers‐by, apparently hitting a policeman, before be‐ ing brought down by six officers who took him away following the crash.

MARBELLA Council has praised the Andalu‐ cia Gastronomica festival, which was held on July 17, saying that it will assist in highlight‐ ing the cuisine of Marbella.

The councillor for Commerce said: “It is very satisfactory that Marbella has been chosen to host an event that was born with a vocation for continuity and that claims the culinary richness and excellence of the restoration of Andalucia and our city as an icon.”

Fuengirola blaze breaks out FIREFIGHTERS had to battle a large fire at a residential building in Calle Chile, Fuen‐ girola, on Tuesday July 20, where initially they believed people to be trapped.

Firemen, health workers, officers from the Local Police and the National Police ar‐ rived on the scene within sev‐ en minutes of the call and thankfully nobody was hurt due to the quick intervention, however the property was completely destroyed.

Paseo de la Alameda, featured workshops, lectures, and ‘show cookings’ on the main stage led by great chefs and musical perfor‐ mances.

Among the activities offered was a con‐ test for the best Andalucian tapas.

The news comes after Marbella Council announced it is set to receive government funding to boost its tourism sector.

The council said the funding would be used to reactivate Marbella’s commerce and tourism.

Gas bottle six yr high THE Spanish government’s official maximum price of a 12.5‐kilo butane gas bottle cylinder is now set at €15.37 ‐ the highest price it has been in six years.

The price of a 12.5‐kilo butane gas bottle in Spain has increased by 4.99 per cent to €15.37, which is the fifth consecutive rise and is now reaching its highest level since March 2015.

The price rise was confirmed on Tuesday July 20, in the BOE Official State Gazette. The reason for the price increase has been put down to the cost of raw materi‐ als, which, according to the bulletin, was partially offset by the slight gain of the euro against the dollar (+ 1.32 per cent).

The price that a butane cylinder can be sold for is re‐ viewed every two months ‐ specifically on the third Tuesday of the odd‐numbered months.

The Cudeca Foundation DESPITE the recent sad loss of founder Joan Hunt, the Cude‐ ca Foundation in Be‐ nalmadena continues to raise funds and as‐ sist those suffering from cancer.

Charmaine Ar‐ bouin, the British Consul in Andalucia and the Canary Is‐ lands, visited Cudeca on Friday July 16 and was shown round the hospice by board members Su‐ san Hannam, Vice‐ President of Cudeca, and Rafael Olalla, the Deputy Chief Execu‐ tive.

A long‐standing supporter of Cudeca, Ms Arbouin had helped the Sunflower Ef f e c t c a m p a i g n t o raise funds for a home care team by making a personal appeal on video, and also made a gener‐ ous donation to the hospice from the Consular Project Fund administered by the Fo r e i g n Commonwealth & Development Of‐ fice.

Commenting that Cudeca’s “special kind of caring” has been more needed than ever during the past year, when the pandemic has in‐ creased the problems of isolation, she thanked the Cudeca staff and volunteers for their dedication and pledged to con‐ tinue to do every‐ thing she could to support them.

Just a few days ear‐ lier, as part of the Cudeca Solidarity Restaurants cam‐ paign, Matteo Man‐ zato from his Venetiis restaurant in Benal‐ madena, presented Cudeca with the sum of €400 raised from sales of his solidarity lasagna.

UK tourists flock to Spain

TOURISTS have been flocking to Spain after the UK government allowed vaccinated travellers to come back from amber list countries without quarantine from July 19.

The number of tourists making

their way to Spain following the amber list changes on July 19 has increased dramatically, with airlines reporting higher numbers of planes arriving at airports. In total, 489 flights were scheduled between the UK and Spain on the

day the government began allowing travellers to amber list countries to come back without quarantine, representing a three-fold increase on the previous week.

Another argued that it is better to eat meat which has come from a farm nearby, than to con‐ sume avocados from California which “have to be flown halfway round the world, but kills millions of bees” she added, “or maybe use palm oil once we clear the Amazon to grow the palms, or possibly to‐ fu, brought all the way from China in a ship.”

He added that occupancy rates are 58.20 per cent for July and 62.03 per cent for August. Hernandez said the majority of tourists were British, adding “we are satisfied by the elimination of the restrictions and surely during the next few days hotel establishments will begin to reopen in those areas that mainly work with this British sector.” The UK government has said that vaccinated travellers coming back from amber list countries will not have to quarantine this summer.

Zurich Malaga Marathon 2021 announced THE Zurich Malaga Marathon 2021 has been confirmed as be‐ ing held on December 12 after it was cancelled in 2020.

Registrations are now open for this event, and also for the half marathon, after last year’s race had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. Almost 3,000 partici‐ pants are taking part, who had booked up previously for the 2020 event, and have kept their names in for the 2021 race.

UNICEF vaccine aid

THE Ministry of Equality, Social Policies and Conciliation, through the Andalucian Agency for Development Cooperation (AACID) has launched various actions to ensure universal and equal access to the Covid vaccine in poorer countries.

Equality will allocate €580,000 in collaboration with UNICEF and the Andalucian School of Public Health to facilitate vaccination processes in Africa and Latin America, which will allow, among other things, the acquisition of 400,000 doses to immunise the population in Mali.

“The inequality in access to vaccines not only appeals to ethical criteria,” states the Minister of Equality, Rocio Ruiz, alluding to the possible appearance of new variants in case of not containing the infection in a global way. Globally, officials plan to distribute 1.3 billion vaccines to low and lower-middle-income countries and humanitarian crisis areas.

Seven arrested by NCA

SEVEN British fugitives have been arrested in Spain in the space of just three weeks as a result of joint operations be‐ tween the National Crime Agency and the National Police.

The fugitives ‐ all men ‐ are wanted in the UK for various un‐ related offences including sup‐ plying Class A and B drugs, sup‐ plying firearms, causing wounding with intent and con‐ spiracy to rob.

The flurry of arrests were exe‐ cuted by the National Police with support from the NCA’s in‐ ternational liaison officer net‐ work, Interpol Manchester and UK police partners.

In late June one suspect, aged 45, was arrested in Estepona on the Costa del Sol. He was want‐ ed by the NCA in connection to a 40kg cocaine conspiracy.

In the early hours of July 4, a 27‐year‐old man was arrested in Marbella for allegedly causing wounding with intent. He is wanted by Greater Manchester Police.

A day later a 36‐year‐old man wanted by Merseyside Police was arrested in Estepona for al‐ legedly supplying firearms and Class A and B drugs.

On July 12, a 26‐year old man wanted by Greater Manchester

Police was arrested in Fuengirola in connection to affray with a machete.

The suspects remain in cus‐ tody awaiting extradition pro‐ ceedings.

The NCA’s international liai‐ son officers worked with Span‐ ish partners and the Crown Prosecution Service to execute the arrests ‐ some under pre‐ex‐ isting European Arrest Warrants, and some under new Trade and Cooperation Agreement war‐ rants.

Dave Hucker Head of Euro‐ pean Operations at the NCA, said: “Seven arrests in just three weeks is the result of some very hard work by the Agency with our Spanish partners ‐ who have allocated critical resources and operated quickly to secure these arrests.

“Fugitives should know that the NCA work hand in glove with international law enforcement partners, and that we therefore have significant reach.

“At home and abroad we will never give up on finding offend‐ ers who have fled justice.”

€1 bn Covid funding THE European Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, Spanish plans to set up a €1 billion recapitalisation fund which will invest through debt and equity instruments in certain companies affected by the coronavirus outbreak. The scheme was approved under the State Aid Temporary Framework.

“This €1 billion recapitalisation scheme will enable Spain to support companies affected by the coronavirus outbreak by fa‐ cilitating their access to finance in these difficult times.

“We continue working in close cooperation with Member States to find workable solutions to mitigate the economic im‐ pact of the coronavirus outbreak, in line with EU rules,” said Ex‐ ecutive Vice‐President Margrethe Vestager.

The measure is open to companies established in Spain and active in all sectors except the financial one, with total net yearly revenues of a minimum €15 million and up to €400 million on a consolidated basis, and that are now facing capital needs due to the coronavirus outbreak. Companies that have already re‐ ceived support through the ‘Solvency Fund for Strategic Enter‐ prises’ approved by the Commission in July 2020 are not eligible for aid under this new scheme.

Unvaccinated travellers entering France from Spain, Portugal, the Nether‐ lands, Greece, and Cyprus are now re‐ quired to present a negative coronavirus test (PCR or antigen) taken a maximum of 24 hours before travelling. This new rule comes into effect after the rebound in Covid cases worldwide and in France due to the Delta variant. The reinforced control system will also apply to people arriving from the United Kingdom, who must also produce a negative test carried out a maximum of 24 hours in advance, compared to the current 48 hours which apply to British travellers entering France.

The period after which people who have received their second dose of the vaccine are allowed to enter France has been re‐ duced from 14 to seven days, after which it is possible to enter the country without a detection test (28 days in the case of the single‐dose Janssen vaccine or a single dose for who have had the virus). The French Government has warned that it will be strengthening all of its land, air, and maritime border controls to ensure strict compliance with these new coronavirus measures.

Spending Fake DGT traffic fines Lego flagship store recovery NATIONAL spending on tourism in June recovered to the prepandemic level. The summer season in Spain starts with encouraging data for the national tourism sector, at least with regard to Spanish trips.

While waiting for the arrival of international visitors to gradually normalise, which are still well below normal before the pandemic, national tourism spending soared to exceed the levels recorded two years ago, driven by the end of the regional closures after the ending of the State of Alarm last May. According to a BBVA Research report released on Monday, July 12, the spending of Spanish credit card users of this bank in provinces and communities other than those they reside in was four percentage points higher in the last week of June than that registered in the same month of 2019, something that had not happened until now at any time since the pandemic broke out.

POLICE are warning of a new scam of fake emails with DGT traffic fine de‐ mands after receiving thousands of com‐ plaints from drivers in Spain.

The General Directorate of Traffic al‐ ready alerted the public in December 2020 that this type of scam had returned.

The email is so good that it includes the official logos of the DGT itself and the Ministry of the Interior in order to lure its victims into the trap.

The aim of the false email is to encour‐ age the user to click on the supposed offi‐ cial form, after which they will be asked for their personal data in order to pay the supposed fine.

If, by any chance the user falls for the scam, a file will be downloaded in the background without them noticing. A banking‐type program known as Mekoito will then run and access the us‐ er’s bank account, squeezing every last euro out of it. This is based on a system capable of opening different windows and accessing different banking websites and pretending to be the user.

To avoid these deceptions, both the DGT and experts specialised in cyberse‐ curity recommend looking at the email and checking its domain to rule out possi‐ ble deceptions and scams as they do not use this format to notify drivers about fines.

THE Lego group are set to open their first flagship store in Spain which is set to open towards the end of 2021 and will be located in Barcelona.

The Danish multinational firm announced that the new store will open hopefully before the Christmas campaign begins. This new store confirms the Lego commitment to Spain where they already have six certified shops. The shops are located in Barcelona, Madrid, Zaragoza and Sevilla.

The Lego flagship store will be located at Barcelona’s 9 Paseo de Gra‐ cia. Visitors will be treated to an impressive experience including an in‐ teractive discovery tree. The tree will be constructed from nearly one million Lego pieces. The tree is meant to express the Lego group’s com‐ mitment to the environment along with their commitment to inclusivi‐ ty.

UK Embassy commiserates with expats FROM July 19, British visitors coming to Spain do not have to quarantine when they return to the UK. But residents in Spain who have both doses of Covid vaccine will still be required to quarantine if going back to the UK prompting many to express their anger and disappointment.

The UK Embassy in Madrid said it understood the rules were causing annoyance.

“We have received many questions and comments about last week’s announcement that those UK Nationals who have been double-vaccinated by the NHS will, from July 19, be able to return from amber-list countries without the need to quarantine on their return,” the Embassy posted on its popular Facebook page on July 14.

“This is good news for anyone coming to visit you here in Spain, but we recognise the disappointment that this exemption does not apply to you. The government is taking a phased approach to amending requirements and is already exploring plans to remove quarantine for vaccinated non-UK residents arriving from amber countries later this summer, when it is safe to do so.

“We will update you as soon as we have further news on this. Meanwhile, you have the option of travelling to the UK and doing quarantine or using the Test to Release scheme to shorten your quarantine period. If you have been vaccinated here in Spain, we recommend getting the EU Covid digital certificate, which will be useful for travel within the EU,” the embassy added.

New EU fisheries regulation

NEW FUND: Will help improve safety conditions.

A NEW EU fisheries regulation has been welcomed by Spain. The Minister for Agriculture Luis Planas said it will help improve health and safety.

The new regulation allows for a fund of €1.12 billion to support the modernisation of Spain’s fishing fleet, including engine repairs in vessels under 24 metres in length, the first purchase of fishing vessels for young fishermen under 40 years of age, and compensation for temporary shutdowns and scrapping.

According to the minister, these measures are nec‐ essary in order to promote “generational change in the fishing sector” and to improve health and safety condi‐ tions at work.

The new fund will cover temporary shutdowns and support for investment on board vessels for reasons of energy efficiency or improved working and safety con‐ ditions, even if the individual gross tonnage of the ves‐ sel increases, as long as this does not lead to an in‐ crease in the country’s overall fishing capacity.

In addition, it will be possible to continue support‐ ing companies in their adaptation to new technologies and offer support for investments in energy efficiency and the economy.

Education will continue EDUCATION will continue as normal in Spain as cases of Covid in the young grows.

Pilar Alegria, the new Min‐ ister of Education, has spo‐ ken about schoolchildren re‐ turning to lessons in the next academic year. She ex‐ plained that in the next aca‐ demic year education will continue despite the pan‐

Correos profits THE Correos Group has released the accounts for the first half of 2021, a period in which it has reported a consolidated profit of €1.8 million.

This figure clearly shows a positive upward trend in busi‐ ness after the complexities of the previous year, during which the pandemic accelerated the collapse of the use of the postcard, or letters, a service which normally accounts for 65 per cent of Correos’ revenues, with a recent drop of 560 million letters less than in 2019, although the company still posted an operating income growth of 20.6 per cent, compared to only a 1.6 per cent operating expense.

This is the result of the effort and strategy implemented to adapt the company’s business model to the new situa‐ tion, where it has adjusted production costs and increased revenues due to the new pricing policy.

Sadly, at this current mo‐ ment in time the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is hitting youngsters the hardest in Spain with around 90 per cent of new cases be‐ ing registered against those under 30 years old.

Alegria gave thanks to the educational community and the parents of students who have fought hard to ensure that education has carried on right throughout the pan‐ demic, even during the dark‐ est moments.

“It may seem simple, but if we look at other European countries, none has been able to do it like Spain. We have all learned during this time and we will apply the lessons learned during this school year,” said Alegria.

She also explained how vaccination has been autho‐ rised in Spain for children who are over the age of 12 years old. As was carried out last year, Spanish schools will see the use of masks and ventilation being key in pre‐ venting new infections.

The commemorative event focused on paying trib‐ ute to health workers who have lost their lives during the ongoing pandemic.

This is the second com‐ memorative event to pay tribute to coronavirus vic‐ tims. The event took place on Thursday, July 15, at the Plaza de la Armeria of the Royal Palace.

During the tribute event the king was expected to present 120 Grand Cross of Civil Merit awards to health workers who have been claimed by the virus. The King planned to present four of these medals in public to relatives of the health work‐ ers and the rest later at the Palace.

Car rental fraud arrest M A L AG A National Police have taken down a criminal organisation based in Mala‐ ga, Madrid, Murcia and Ali‐ cante, which was dedicated to defrauding vehicle rental companies.

Twelve members of the or‐ ganisation have been arrest‐ ed for the alleged crimes of money laundering, fraud and belonging to a criminal or‐ ganisation. The main ‘leader’ of the organisation has also been arrested for the alleged crime of the illegal posses‐ sion of weapons.

Officers carried out search‐ es in which they discovered jewels and high‐end jew‐ ellery valued at over €1 mil‐ lion, a revolver with six car‐ tridges, €150,000 and various documents, according to a statement from the National Police.

Millions in seized tobacco PORTUGAL’S Guarda Nacional Republicana and Spain’s National Police, supported by Europol and the Spanish cus‐ toms authorities, have dismantled an organised crime group involved in excise fraud and the smuggling of tobac‐ co products.

Investigations on July 7 led to 82 location searches, 70 in Portugal and 12 in Spain, targeting private residences, warehouses, garages and vehicles; five arrests in Portugal and 12 in Spain; seizure of eight tons of tobacco and cigarettes worth €113,500 along with seven weapons, 24 vehicles and €216,000.

The criminal network was involved in the illegal import of large quantities of tobacco leaves and strips from Spain into Portugal. This raw material served the illegal produc‐ tion of both cigarettes and tobacco for roll‐your‐own‐ cigarettes distributed on the Portuguese black market.

In mid‐June, Spanish authorities discovered and disman‐ tled cutting and processing facilities. The tobacco pro‐ cessed there was shipped to Portugal, where it was stored in different warehouses before being further distributed.

Since the investigation was launched in May 2020, the Portuguese and the Spanish authorities have detained 23 individuals and seized about 1.8 million illicit cigarettes along with 11 tons of tobacco, with a total worth of about €3.2 million.

Worker loses eye A HEALTH worker has lost an eye after being brutally at‐ tacked on a Madrid Metro train for telling a passenger to wear a face mask.

Police in Madrid are looking for a man accused of the as‐ sault. Video footage of Thurs‐ day July 15’s incident, that oc‐ curred at the Alto del Arenal station on Line 1 of the Madrid Metro, has since gone viral on social networks, and police are hoping that somebody will recognise the aggressor.

The man allegedly attacked the health worker with a sharp object, which went into his eye, and even though he was transferred to the 12 de Octubre Hospital, they were unable to save his eye.

In the video, the aggressor, wearing a pink baseball cap and a backpack is seen picking something up and leaves the carriage as the train pulls into the station. He shouts at the man, “Let it be clear to you, I hope you die, asshole.” The National Police have asked the public to contact them if they know who the man is.

Arrested on Camino de Santiago A FUGITIVE wanted in connection with three murders in Brazil was arrested while doing the Camino de Santiago.

His arrest occurred on July 15, when officers from the National Police - through their control of the hostels in the area detected the presence of a 53-year-old Spanish citizen, of Argentinian origin who was doing the famous treks of the Camino de Santiago.

The officers were able to verify that the man was listed with a ‘red notification’ from Interpol, standing accused of committing a triple homicide in Rio de Janeiro some years previously.

After his arrest, his full identity was subsequently confirmed, and he appeared before a judge in Palencia.

SPANISH cruise company Pull‐ mantur has made a request to the courts to open the liquidation process, in order to carry out an inventory of the company’s assets to allow potential investors to in‐ ject the necessary capital needed, or to sell it.

This move has been long‐ex‐ pected, as the pandemic has hit the cruise sector badly, with no re‐ al date set in stone for the resump‐ tion of activities. In a statement from the bankruptcy administrator of the shipping company, it said: “Pullmantur continues negotiating with two or three investors.”

While Pullmantur commented, “Unfortunately, the prolongation of the State of Alarm and its suc‐ cessive extensions, together with the restrictions in the cruise opera‐ tion, made Pullmantur, like the rest of its competitors, have to postpone again its plans to restart activities, due to the restrictions in Spain to contain the Covid‐19, dis‐ rupting all its work plans.”

If an investor can be found then the company can restart, and rein‐ state the workforce, but in the ab‐ sence of any investor then the company would end up closing.

Spanish citizenship for Senegalese heroes SAMUEL LUIZ: Died after a vicious attack by numerous young people.

THE Spanish government are set to grant nationality to the two Senegalese men who risked their own well‐being to try to pro‐ tect Samuel Luiz during a vicious attack which took place in La Coruña.

Samuel was tragically beaten to death by multiple young peo‐ ple in what is considered by many people to be a homophobic attack.

The Secretary of State for Migration has confirmed that the Spanish government will grant Spanish nationality to these two brave men. Samuel’s friends have been among those to request this happen. The two men have been welcomed by Samuel’s friends into their group and are treated as one of their own.

The Spanish government has the legal authority to legalise people’s irregular situations in Spain on a discretionary basis.

This can occur when people show exceptional solidarity and thereby prove themselves to be worthy of being citizens.

The government believes that this describes perfectly the two young Senegalese men who tried to save the life of Samuel. One of them even threw his own body over Samuel’s to protect him during the attack. The other man helped Samuel’s friends.

PCR test UK’s new Covid regulations time now extended THE Ministry of Health has extended the validity of a PCR test to enter Spain to 72 hours.

The Spanish government has extended the period that P C R tests are valid to enter Spain for up to 72 hours, and to 48 hours for antigen tests.

The tests now admitted will be molecular nucleic acid amplification (NAAT) tests, including PCR tests, which have been taken within the 72 hours prior to arrival in Spain.

Antigen tests included in the common list of the E uropean Commission will also be accepted provided that they are taken 48 hours before travelling to Spain.

The diagnostic test certificate must include the traveller’s name and surname, date of sample collection, type of test performed and issuing country.

EXPATS used to Spain’s rules about face masks, going out and Covid etiquette in a variety of settings, may be perplexed by a new set of rules in the UK, here is what you need to know.

People arriving to the UK from amber list countries will not have to quarantine if they are under 18 or have both doses of a Covid vaccine. But they will be asked to take a test three days before returning,

and on or before the second day after their return.

The legal requirement to wear a mask in the UK is no longer in place, but lots of places and transport companies still want you to wear one when on their premises.

There is no longer a limit on how many people you can meet indoors or outside.

Social distancing rules are also gone for everyone except those self‐isolating after a

positive test and in airports.

Nightclubs and bars, festivals, sports sta‐ diums and concert halls, are also open.

People in the UK will also no longer be forced to work from home.

People will still have to self‐isolate if they show any symptoms of Covid, if they test positive or live with someone who has tested positive. If you test positive, you must self‐isolate for 10 days.

Mask question THE President of the Basque Government, Iñigo Urkullu, has asked the President of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, to re‐ consider the mandatory use of the mask.

In an interview with the newspaper Deia, Urkullu points out that “garments would not hurt” if another State of Alarm had to be de‐ clared. He said: “What gives us some hope in a very pru‐ dent way is the occupation of ICU beds, not deaths, the re‐ productive index ... But if we see that it goes wrong, we will have to put some other measure on the table that I do not know if it has to be with the State of Alarm but, in any case, that it is an umbrella for the whole of the State.”

He added: “The situation invites us to reflect on whether umbrella tools are necessary for the whole of the State, understanding the time of year we are in, if there may be an effect on certain economic sectors, such as tourism and the hospitality in‐ dustry.”

Hope for asthmatics COMPANY GSK has created the National Institute for Severe Asthma (INAG) to improve the quality of life for asthmatic people.

In Spain, the prevalence of asthma is 5.5 per cent of the population and of these, 7.7 per cent suffer from a severe form.

Among its objectives are to improve the training of specialists, unify the criteria for diagnosis and treatment, make visible in the population the limitations that these patients have and, above all, improve patient access to Asthma Units.

Luis Perez de Llano, head of the Pneumology Service at Lucus Augusti University Hospital in Lugo (HULA) highlighted the work of the Asthma Units. He said: “They have turned out to be very costeffective because they allow bringing the experts together and the necessary technology.”

Gran Vía metro open

AFTER three years of construction, Madrid’s Gran Vía metro station is finally open again to the public.

The newly inaugurated pavilion-style entrance at Madrid’s freshly renovated Gran Vía Metro station stands like a gateway welcoming people to the Spanish capital.

The construction is a replica of the former entrance, built in 1917 by architect Antonio Palacios, and it is faithful to the original design. According to members of the public present at the inauguration, the granite used for the structure is so clean and blemish-free that it almost looks unreal.

The new image of the station is further enhanced by four new lifts, 13 escalators, voice-recognition functions at ticket-vending machines, and a museum space exhibiting the many treasures that were discovered during the renovation work.

The 51-year-old man with no previous pathologies was infected at the end of January and admitted to the ICU for 127 days, 122 of them connected to an extracorporeal oxygenation device (ECMO), a machine that performs the functions of the lungs.

After four months his lungs did not respond and the Bellvitge Hospital, where he was admitted, requested an assessment from the Vall d’Hebron Lung Transplantation Committee.

Jordi Soriano, the transplant patient, explained on Friday, July 16, that when he entered the hospital “I was connected to a machine with which I have been for almost four months.”

After being operated on, “after 24 days they took it away from me.” This has been a fivemonth journey, Soriano explained.

How wall lizards The great Spanish omelette debate World’s first organic thrived in Spain caviar is produced in A NEW study may have uncovered why wall lizards have become the most successful reptile in the Mediterranean region.

The results reveal how drastic changes in sea levels and climate six million years ago affected species formation in the area. The researchers believe they can now explain why the lizards became so diverse and widespread, something that has puzzled biologists since the 19th century.

The evolution of wall lizards offers clues on how major events in the Mediterranean climate and geology millions of years ago affected how species formed or became extinct, and paved the way for biodiversity.

Wall lizards date back around 20 million years. However, species formation seems to have picked up speed shortly after the Messinian Salinity Crisis six million years ago. During this period the Mediterranean almost dried out, only to rapidly fill up with water again as the Strait of Gibraltar opened.

The research indicates that species isolated from each other for millions of years occasionally have found each other and shared genes. By comparing DNA sequences from 26 species and eight subspecies, the team successfully mapped the major features of the evolution of wall lizards.

Sailboat attacked by killer whales A SAILBOAT has been attacked by a group of killer whales in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Salvamento Maritimo set out on a rescue mission to help a sailboat that had been attacked by a pod of killer whales in the early hours of July 15.

According to reports the boat was a recreational sailing boat which had two people on board. They called for help at 3.50am. The sea conditions were also bad and they were being hit by two metre waves. The crew members were able to confirm that they had followed protocol which included lowering the sails and turning off the engine.

Luckily for the people on board the Salvamar Enif was able to find them and accompany the two-metre-long boat to safety at Cadiz’s Barbate where they arrived safely at 6am.

THE world’s first-ever organic caviar is being produced by Caviar Riofrio in the Granada municipality of Loja.

Caviar Riofrio is a company that was founded back in 1963 by the Navarrese doctor, Luis Domezain, located in the town of Loja, and originally built as a trout farm.

The doctor soon incorporated sturgeon to the farm, but a tragic flood in September 2018 covered one of the fish farms in mud, and in just a few minutes more than 11,000 sturgeons died.

This was when Carlos Cadenas and his partner Antonio Romero got involved, buying the farm in 2019, with the objective of returning it to its former glory but sadly Antonio passed away in 2020 - rebuilding the business.

Loja is at a similar latitude south of the Caspian Sea as Iran, and, as in Iran, the waters originate in mountains that are over 3,000 metres high, are free of pesticides, and maintain a constant temperature of between 14ºC and 15ºC, and with an investment of over €2 million, Carlos Cadenas has rebuilt the fish farm while still respecting the natural environment.

He currently has more than 100,000 sturgeon specimens at the farm, consisting of the three most famous varieties of the fish, all under the careful supervision of four biologists, three from Russia, and one Spanish.

Criminals posed as officers THE Guardia Civil have arrested nine people and are investigat‐ ing another six in Madrid and the province of Toledo, for crimes against property that they committed with great vio‐ lence, whilst also posing as members of the security forces.

It is reported by the Guardia Civil that the leader of this crimi‐ nal gang ‐ ‘Goyito’ ‐ has been ar‐ rested on 20 previous occasions, having committed more than 200 crimes, and those arrested are also reportedly related to an attempted murder in Navalcan,

4,000 ignored curfew THE first night of the new curfew rules in Catalonia Province saw Barcelona police having to remove 4,357 people who had taken to the city’s streets and beaches, who were not respecting the new curfew. This new action was brought in after the Generalitat de Catalonia made a request to the Catalonia High Court of Justice, asking for the 161 municipalities almost 80 per cent of Catalonia - in the province with the highest rates of infection to once again have a curfew imposed between the hours of 1am and 6am, in an effort to combat the spread of the virus in the province, especially among young people.

Barcelona’s Guardia Urbana police force reportedly highlighted the ‘normality’ and ‘absence’ of incidents involved during the evictions on the first night of lockdown in the capital of Catalonia, saying that there had been no noticeable increase seen in the number of private parties or concentrations taking place in the streets. Most of the 4,357 evicted people were reportedly found on the streets and squares of the city centre, and in the Ciutat Vella district of the city, as well as on the beaches, where there were many tourists.

The operation remains open, with the police not ruling out fur‐ ther arrests.

Avoid the sun after vaccine

SUNBATHING: It is advisable not to be exposed to the sun during the hottest hours.

IT is being recommended not to sunbathe in the middle of the day after being vaccinated.

In the recommendations of the Ministry of Health for vaccination, there is no mention of the prohibition of sunbathing after being vacci‐ nated, in fact, it is advisable to choose outdoor activities to avoid infections.

However, the SUMMA coordinator at the Wizink Vaccination Centre, Raquel Jimenez, rec‐ ommended not to expose yourself to the sun.

“It is not advisable to be exposed to the sun during the hottest hours,” said the expert, al‐ though the manufacturers of the vaccines do not specifically mention anything about it.

“Before vaccination, there are no contraindi‐ cations, a normal life should be carried out and afterwards, one must wait about eight hours to ensure that there are no side effects before making efforts and being able to start a normal life,” she added.

The recommendation comes from the side ef‐ fects that the vaccine can produce hours after re‐ ceiving the injection, fever being one of these most common symptoms. Likewise, having a headache is another of the most repeated symp‐ toms of the Covid vaccine, a pain that can also be caused or increased due to long sun expo‐ sure.

Lockdown fines

MORE than one million fines handed out for breaches dur‐ ing the first State of Alarm which began in March 2020 are set to be annulled follow‐ ing a Constitutional Court rul‐ ing on Wednesday July 14.

People who already paid fines should be able to claim their money back.

Across Spain, approximately 1.15 million people received fines ranging from €601 to €30,000 for breaching lock‐ down restrictions. The vast majority of these fines were handed out to people living in Andalucia and Madrid.

While the court’s full ruling has yet to be published, Span‐ ish media outlets are also sug‐ gesting that businesses that made claims against the gov‐ ernment for losses incurred during the lockdown may be able to see their cases pro‐ ceed. However, fresh claims introduced after the court’s ruling on July 14 will not be en‐ tertained.

Gambling fraud NATIONAL POLICE officers, in ‘Operation Monaco’, have carried out an investigation against an alleged criminal group dedicated to manipulating electronic roulettes in gambling halls in Granada, and investigators estimate that in one night, the gang would have illegally earned €56.500.

Three of the alleged members of this organisation were already arrested a few months ago in Madrid, charged with operating scams in up to 19 establishments, where they would have swindled around €60,000.

Currently one of those investigated for the events is in prison in Madrid, while three other identified, two men and a woman are unaccounted for, with investigators continuing the search for their location, an arduous task since they are known to often abandon the national territory, and when they are in Spain, they change their address regularly.

This recent investigation was launched after a complaint from the owner of a gambling establishment in the centre of Granada, and during their investigation they discovered the modus operandi used was a radio frequency identification card that could alter the normal operation of two roulette-type gaming machines, causing them a financial loss of €56,500.

Spanish wines popular in UK ent wines that it stocks.

Talking to Euro Weekly News about its Spanish wines, a spokesman explained: “Spanish wines have dominated the best‐sell‐ ing list at Majestic for some time, with key regions such as Rioja a firm customer favourite.

‘Hand luggage’ Melilla WHILST the unemployment situ‐ ation in Spain appears to be get‐ ting better, Spanish enclaves in Morocco are finding their economies are getting worse.

For many years Ceuta and Melilla had relatively thriving economies due to the fact that they benefited from what is known as ‘atypical commerce’ whereby goods were shipped in from around the world.

They were then taken to the borders with Morocco where mainly women, who had access to cross the border, were paid to take large packages as ‘hand lug‐ gage’ into Morocco, avoiding im‐ port duties.

From 2018, Morocco started to make it more difficult for this to happen and come the outbreak of the pandemic, bor‐ ders were closed, meaning that a huge flow of income disap‐ peared from both Ceuta and Melilla and this continues to

Each of the enclaves houses around 85,000 residents and it is reported by the World Politics Review that although about half of those employed work for the Spanish Government, adult un‐ employment is now around 30 per cent in Ceuta and 20 per cent in Melilla.

The local economies used to thrive on import taxes (much lower than Morocco or Spain) on goods which soon found their way across the borders but this source of income has now disappeared.

The way forward seems to be either rapprochement between Morocco and Spain (which cur‐ rently seems unlikely) or the possible incorporation of the two enclaves into the EU cus‐ toms zone which would be likely to generate options for income.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL, I hope the woke wallies that encouraged the introduction of an act of such provocative propaganda into our national sport are pleased with themselves.

The taking of the knee, in support of a Marxist, anti‐white (and in fact anti male) organisation has ‐ as I was scoffed at for prophesying months ago ‐ now created more racism in the UK than ever could have been previously envisaged.

Instead of a few low lifes making derogatory noises from the terraces, or the occasional banana being thrown on the pitch, there are now thousands of spectators voicing their displeasure of this act of blatant racial confrontation at the start of every match. And now it is announced that some of our mislead athletes will be continuing this practice of ‘gesture politics’ at the Tokyo games!

This decision is in direct violation of the Olympic charter that states and I quote: ‘No kind of demonstration, political, religious or racist propaganda is permitted on any

In fact many categories are positively dominated by ethnic athletes.

These continuing accusations of white privilege are a positive disgrace and completely non‐ productive to anyone truly wishing to

solve the problems. Personally I think the words of the great actor Morgan Freeman were probably one of the most intelligent pieces of advice I’ve heard, when he announced in the media that the best way to end racism was to stop talking about it!

The BLM movement is a far left Marxist organisation which, under the guise of seeking racial equality, is intent on causing as much disruption and resentment as it is allowed to get away with. Time it was exposed for what its intentions truly are (which is actually black female domination!)

Well, good luck with that.

I believe the British government has finally capitulated to Covid. It’s now every man, woman and child for themselves. And good luck with that as well!

AFTER decades of doing everything possible to keep reported UFO sightings secret, the Pen‐ tagon has changed tack. According to a recently‐ released report, it has no explanation for dozens of unidentified flying objects seen by US military pilots.

All the cynics amongst you may well point to the fact that aliens only seem interested in places where western powers are known to test new technologies (places like southern California, Vir‐ ginia Beach etc) and to let them know just when the little green folk show some interest in Syria or Sri Lanka. And that maybe there is another expla‐ nation for UFO videos released by military forces: the need to convince us of the ongoing existence of threats, real and imaginary, to maximise their funding.

Admittedly, we’ve been told by our own gov‐ ernment there’s been no substantiated evidence of Unidentified Flying Objects over the past half

ALIENS: Are not just confined to British politics. century. But heck, that’s the UK Government ‐ it wouldn’t LIE to us, would it?

Unidentified means unidentified, not alien but alien could be applied to some UK politicians. And let’s face it: there are some very strange people in

politics. And even more who claim that the lack of UFO sightings over the years is simply because aliens have all now been assimilated into the vari‐ ous political parties.

But these aliens aren’t confined to British poli‐

tics. Consider former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the number of times she ‘mis‐spoke’ about being in places where she clearly wasn’t.

Under sniper fire in Bosnia. Under bomb fire in Belfast. It always sounded so thrilling ‐ like some‐ thing out of a Dan Brown novel. Problem was, it did come out of a Dan Brown novel. Fiction that’s totally out of this world.

Then there’s Donald Trump still refusing to ac‐ cept the election result...

Yes, politicians are strange. Alien‐like. And with us. And, unlike the Pentagon, we’ve got the PROOF...

And a final thought: in space, nobody’ll hear Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk etc in their rockets. So can Dominic Cummings go too (plus any others you’d like to add?)

Views of a Grumpy Old Man THE world we live in today makes these articles almost write themselves unless you are dumb enough to believe everything that is being fed to us. We are being mugged off big time and I’m not talking about Covid, I’m talking about everything.

I live on the Costa del Sol and if one didn’t read the news, watch it on TV or look at the internet you wouldn’t know there was anything different going on except there are people walking about in masks. The beaches and restaurants are full. Obviously lots of businesses haven’t made it but there is still ‘normal’ life going on.

The UK government has introduced an ‘amber plus’ now to make sure they ruin as many peoples’ holidays as possible. When BoJo and Sunak were told to isolate suddenly they’re part of a new experiment and won’t be treated the same as the plebs.

Two hours later they did a complete U-turn.

Do they really think the public are going to stand for this nonsense? Over 300,000 people were at Silverstone this weekend and were

not really subject to any stringent checks that they are complying with the entry rules. This was confirmed by the boss of Silverstone in all the press and news programmes. If the organisers believe everyone is being totally honest then I’ve got some bridges and palaces in London I’d like to sell them.

So they are trying to nick the whistle blower who released the CCTV footage of Hancock’s hallway grope. Actually they should give that person a reward, maybe a knighthood, for doing the right thing and exposing the lying, cheating, smiling assassin scumbag to the public for what he really is.

Just got a message that 34 passwords stored on my phone have been compromised and I need to change them. I looked at the offending apps and I have to tell you I can’t remember 90 per cent of them so it’s going to be a fun time changing them. My phone also told me today that I’m listening to my music too loud and promptly turned it down for me! I’m now arguing with my phone about how loud I can have my music.

A note to all the app makers - please change the way I have to enter my date of birth. Just let me type it in - it’s really distressing to scroll all the way down to 1949 from 2021. It’s like my whole life flashing past me!!

Relieve stress - hug a tree A spoonful a day keeps FOREST Bathing is the latest health and well-being craze to arrive in Europe.

The bathing does not involve water, it just uses all your senses to absorb the atmosphere of the forest.

The art has been practised in Japan and South Korea for many years to improve the physical and mental state of the body.

Japan is the most densely populated country in the world, needless to say stress levels are high.

Research has proved that forest walking relaxes the mind, lowers blood pressure and can improve recovery from illness and surgery.

Extensive scientific research carried out by the Japanese government, found that chemicals released by the trees, known as phytoncides have an antimicrobial effect on our bodies, boosting the immune system. As a result of their findings they introduced ‘shinrin-yoku’ their name for forest bathing - as a national health programme.

Forest bathers are encouraged to first of all just stand in the woodland, close their eyes and become aware of their senses: the feel of the ground beneath their feet, the scent of the trees and flora, and the sounds surrounding

harmful rays away!

The second stage is to walk slowly observing any movement. The trees swaying, the leaves quivering, flying insects and the growth of plant life.

Lastly it is time to choose a tree that you feel some connection to. Once you have made your choice you must hug the tree telling it your innermost thoughts and worries.

With all the pressures of modern everyday life, forest bathing seems such an easy, relaxing way to relieve stress and improve health completely free of charge.

SUNBATHERS are increasing the risk of skin cancer by failing to apply the right amount of sunscreen to the body, according to new research.

On average, people are using less than half the tanning lotion than is advised by the manufacturers because they apply such a thin layer.

A new study conducted by scientists at Kings College London recommend using a safer method to ensure sufficient protection called the ‘teaspoon method.’

Anthony Young, a professor of Photobiology from the university, split 16 volunteers into two groups of eight.

The first group were exposed to ultraviolet radiation to simulate sunlight over one day, while wearing sunscreen of varying thick-

ness.

T he second group received exposure similar to conditions on a five-day holiday to destinations such as Tenerife, Florida or Brazil.

Biopsies taken after the experiment concluded that proper sun cream use lowered damage seven-and-ahalf times compared to using no sun protection, even when the UV rays were very weak. Those exposed to five days of high ultraviolet rays, who wore the correct amount of sunscreen, showed significantly less damage and sunburn was reduced by 40 per cent.

T he new measurement method to apply sunscreen is a simple gauge to ensure correct dosage of the cream keeping ahead of the recommended 2mg of cream per cm2 of skin.

For instance, an average woman should apply a total

of six teaspoons of cream every time she puts on sun protection - half a teaspoon to each arm, face and neck, and then one full teaspoon to each leg, front and back of the body. This should be applied three times a day depending on sun exposure.

“Most people who use an SPF 20 sunscreen will actually be getting something like S P F 4 because they aren’t applying enough,” said Professor Young. “They overestimate the protection they are getting and then stay out in the sun too long and get burned.

“But it is difficult to estimate how much to use and for the whole body you actually need a lot of sun cream, far more than people realise.”

If the method is accepted by the manufacturers, a measuring unit could be included with the cream.

Summer of drag IN what is considered to be a groundbreaking event for Spanish TV, some of Spain’s best drag queens will spend the summer in Torremolinos.

A very special show ‘Gran Hotel de las Reinas’ will begin its tour in Torremolinos on July 31 and run until August 28 bringing on stage some of the best drag acts on the national scene.

“This summer the town opens again, a town in which no one hides because we are a space where everyone can express their freedom and diversity.

“Therefore the ‘Grand Hotel of the Queens’ will be a key activity that complements tourism, because we are not just a destination for sun and beach, here people come to enjoy, to be happy and excited, so I had to start the tour here,” explained Mayor Ortiz in the presentation that took place in the Municipal Auditorium which will host the different functions.

This will be a show that includes dance, humour, live music and audience participation and there will be a huge selection of top acts and those attending will be able to enjoy appearances from Paca la Piranha, Supreme de Luxe and the drag

artists Arunta Castilla La Mancha, Carmen Farola, Doviak Nurmi, Drag Volcano, Humacao Create, Inti, Killer Queen, Pupa Poisson, Sagittarian and The Macarena plus others.

“There was no better place to start this tour than Torremolinos. We are going to give visibility to some artists who have been working for years and now with this form of entertainment on television the artists will be recognised,” explained the general director of Atresmedia Eventos, Pablo López-Barajas.

The specific dates for the show are July 31, as well as August 7, 14, 21 and 28 with tickets available via the website https://granhoteldelasreinas.es.

“We had our eye on Torremolinos because we had seen its great commitment to diversity and it was a very clear match between the city, the council and us,” said the CEO of Locamente Factory, Ferrán Poca.

Finally, the drag artist Pupi Poisson, expressed the nerves and emotion that all the participants of the show harbour. “We have been hiding in bars and we are looking forward to doing our best. It’s going to be a before and after in Torremolinos and in Spain.”

The golf tournament, which will raise funds for charity, was announced at a presentation at‐ tended by a representative from Marbella Council.

Councillor for Sports, Manuel Cardeña, attended the presenta‐ tion of the four‐tournament goal circuit which will raise funds for the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) of Marbella.

Taking place in the municipali‐ ty during the months of July and August, the tournament is ex‐ pected to attract tourists and lo‐ cals.

The councillor said: “The coun‐ cil supports this event because it is aimed at a group that performs invaluable work and we believe that it is a very attractive format that, in the middle of the tourist season, allows us to combine fun and solidarity.”

Why does your cat not like water?

WATER has long been the neme‐ sis of most felines, in spite what those cat surfing videos on YouTube may suggest. So are

It is thought that cats self‐do‐ mesticated in the Middle East around 10,000 years ago. This of‐ fers a big clue as to why they are so averse to water ‐ it’s in their DNA. If their ancestors evolved in an arid desert, this means they would have had little experience swimming or being submerged underwater.

Unlike dogs, cats are also not built physically to appreciate get‐ ting wet. While dogs’ coats repel water, cats’ fur absorbs it which then causes their body tempera‐ ture to drop ‐ and cats hate being cold almost as much as they hate being wet.

Some of domestic cats’ more distant relatives, however, actu‐ ally enjoy taking a dip. Tigers, for example, are known to cool off in the water and even take a swim if the circumstances call for it.

It is possible to get your cat used to water by slowly introduc‐ ing him to the feel of it, but this is usually most effective when he is a kitten.

BY NICOLE KING IT’S funny the things that come up in conversation, particularly at this time of year. Summertime brings sunshine, which evokes smiles and joy, visits to the beach, sandcastles, pool parties and in a holiday city like ours, hopefully tourists.

But that’s not all. With the tourism comes reckless drivers, people drink‐ ing too much and driving on the wrong side of the road, people turn‐ ing off the motorway and then turn‐ ing back on again without warning, cars cutting across lanes.

When I first arrived to live in Madrid in 1990 it was amazing to see how they didn’t have the culture of pulling the car aside when an ambu‐ lance came. I’m constantly reminded of this now as I watch ambulances wailing agonisingly as they struggle to make it through the traffic that is far too unaware.

Also please be aware of the cy‐ clists! It is mandatory to leave at least one car width distance if passing; don’t pass otherwise!! Basically please don’t take risks and don’t un‐

nerve them by honking your horn or driving too close. This goes for mo‐ torcycles and nowadays scooters and other wheeled devices that appear from all over the place. Also consider that when people are pushing prams, the pram is in front of the person and they might not be choosing the cor‐ rect place to cross because they can’t see past the pram; same goes for kids and animals that live on either side of our main thoroughfare.

day cities with a different mission than those that come to steal your handbag, your luggage and anything they can grab from your car.

Our children are direct targets too; there are those who are looking to take advantage of your distraction for just about everything. Never leave a child unattended; not even in the car whilst you’re next to them at the cashpoint.

It also came to my attention yes‐ terday that toads’ spit is poisonous and it’s really bad for dogs. Also bad for dogs is taking them out to walk in the heat of the day or on scorching pavements. They are better off with‐ out a walk rather than burnt paw and a heat stroke. If they swim in the

ocean the salt water will also make them sick. Please consider their needs carefully.

Our needs change in this heat too; keeping well hydrated is important, particularly if you’re drinking alcohol.

I realise today’s column is a little ‘preachy’ but I know that often we don’t do things right only because we didn’t realise it was wrong. Some‐ times a gentle reminder just helps us be more aware.

It’s an all‐electric affair and an estate, which will surprise many as SUVs con‐ tinue to find favour with a majority of buyers. With an

MG5 EV, a great package affordable starting price of just €29,371 (£25,095), after the UK government grant, it offers lots of space, excel‐ lent equipment levels and a very good claimed range. It’s not the cheapest EV out there, but in terms of space and equipment it offers a great package.

It’s a fairly basic design in terms of looks but

because it’s fairly straight‐ forward it has a very decent load area.

Passenger space is also generous and there’s good seat adjustment so everyone should find a comfortable driving position.

Standard fare includes navigation, cruise control, rear parking camera, keyless

start, air conditioning, auto‐ matic lights and an eight‐ inch touchscreen. The higher trim level, there are just two, adds keyless entry, au‐ tomatic wipers, heated seats, power mirrors, auto dimming rear view mirror and faux leather seating.

Power comes from a 52 kwh battery to provide a 214 mile range, or in pure city

driving 276 miles. Energy re‐ generation is better in the urban environment because of the stop/start nature of the driving.

If you can find a 50 kw charger then your volts can charge up to 80 per cent in 50 minutes. In reality our public charging network isn’t great and even if you find a fast charger there are so many factors, you might find it doesn’t charge at full rate.

That said the MG charged commendably quickly during my tenure and provided enough volts to make it use‐

able without range anxiety.

As ever a home charger is a must to make EV life practi‐ cal.

On the road the MG5 isn’t a speed machine, as with all electric cars it has good pace, and the ride can get a little choppy on rougher sur‐ faces.

That said it’s a comfort‐ able drive and an immensely practical, well equipped and rather likeable family and business holdall. If you’re looking to move to an EV on a budget then the MG5 could be the perfect start.

Not quite as emphatic as the score suggests in this friendly match which took place at the Estadio

Municipàl San Pedro de Alacan‐ tara last Friday July 16. Despite it being a 10am kick off it was still very hot at that hour, but it was the home side in their blue strips who settled quickest with Cala‐ honda being punished once again for taking time to settle and get organised. Back came the greens however with a well taken goal by Gary and then a long range Nick Special put Calahonda on level terms at 2‐2.

After the first water break the

game swung from end to end with both sides playing excellent football.

Benahavis took the lead again with Calahonda equalising soon after with an excellent Colin the Manc goal. A penalty converted

by Nick put the Greens in front for the first time 5‐4, but back came the Blues to level it again.

Benahavis, slightly younger than their opponents, took advan‐ tage of the tiring Calahonda team and with the assistance of a now vociferous crowd surged ahead in the last 15 minutes rattling in four

goals to seal the match at 9‐5.

This was a splendid advert for walking football with both teams playing to the spirit of the game, obeying the rules and respecting referee Ian Flynn who controlled the game well.

Benahavis will be the happier of the two teams with some slick passing and deadly finishing from Gregg, while Calahonda showed much improvement from recent matches and only tiredness pre‐ venting them taking a draw.
