UEP FLY BEGINS

ON June 29, the Balearic Government announced that a new Balearic airline UEP FLY will start inter‐island flights from July 15.

According to Minister of Mobility and Housing, Josep Marí the entry into the inter‐island market of this new company, is very good news because it will improve connectivity between the islands.

Currently, inter‐island flights are undertaken by two airlines: Air Nostrum and Air Europa with 59 return trips Palma‐Menorca and 75 round trips Palma‐Ibiza weekly.

UEP FLY will start operating from July 15 with three daily round trips between Palma and Ibiza and two between Palma and Menorca increasing weekly connections to Menorca by 51 per cent and Ibiza by 28 per cent.

The company currently has three ATR 72 twin‐propeller air‐ craft, which are environmentally sustainable, with a capacity for 68 passengers.

Majority shareholder in the new airline is Swiftair, a Spanish company with 35 years of history dedicated to cargo transport, passenger transport for other airlines, as well as charter flights.

Once underway, the company plans to increase the number of daily flights as well as to expand destinations that connect the Balearic Islands with the peninsula.

Chef Ramsay’s daughter on Love Island? 354 students test positive GORDON RAMSAY’S daughter Meghan has sparked Love Is‐ land rumours on Instagram.

Ramsay’s daughter has left hints that she could enter the Love Island villa after she began to follow Hugo Hammond on Instagram.

Hugo is set to star in this year’s show which started on June 28 on ITV2 and ITV Hub. It had previously been ru‐ moured that another Ramsay daughter Holly, aged 21, would be appearing in the 2021 line‐ up. When the Love Island an‐ nouncements were made, she did not appear in the line‐up though.

Holly has taken to Instagram to quash the rumours and said: “Thanks for all the lovely mes‐ sages but no, I’m definitely not appearing on Love Island.”

Hugo is 24 and is an England disability cricketer and a PE teacher. He is from Hampshire and will be the first disabled con‐ testant to star on Love Island. He hopes that starring on the show will kick start his love life and he said: “I saw it as an opportunity to have an amazing fun summer and put myself back out there.”

STUDENTS from at least five au‐ tonomous communities have shown positive Covid‐19 test re‐ sults after they all returned from various end‐of‐year school trips to Mallorca.

According to the Ministry of Health, all the students had one thing in common ‐ they had been on school trips there be‐ tween June 12 and 20.

The students were from across Spain including Valencia, Madrid, the Basque Country,

Snorkelling challenge TWO intrepid swimmers, Timothy Galgey and Pete Langan will be attempting to snorkel the entire 555 km coastline of Mal‐ lorca during the month of July.

They want to raise awareness of the amount of plastic pollution in the Mediter‐ ranean around Mallorca and will take wa‐ ter samples during this challenge to test the presence of macro plastics.

They are raising money for two chari‐ ties, the first is Yachting Gives Back which collaborates with several local charities to

reach out to those most in need ‐ people who suffer from hunger and have nowhere to live.

The second is Save the Med whose mis‐ sion is ‘to enable the Mediterranean Sea to recover its rich biodiversity and to thrive in harmony with prospering, envi‐ ronmentally conscious and proactive local populations.’

Murcia, and Aragon. Galicia is still studying whether their cases are connected with any visit to Mallorca.

To enter the Balearic Islands, travellers from the bulk of the autonomous regions must pro‐ duce a negative PCR test, or a negative antigen test.

Travellers from Valencia, Murcia, Galicia, Extremadura, Ceuta and Melilla, where cases are either on or lower than 50 per 100,000 inhabitants within the previous 15 days, do not need to show a negative test on entry.

According to the Epidemiolo‐ gy Service, the students met on the island and mingled during social events. The Balearic Health Ministry says there is no evidence that they have gener‐ ated any outbreak locally within the community.

Madrid has registered the highest number of positive re‐ sults, where the Ministry of Health has reported 245 con‐ firmed cases and more than 450 isolated contacts between part‐ ners of young people who have tested positive.

Town Hall explained that the students had stayed in Mallorca between June 11 and 18, and, as there are several affected com‐ munities, the coordination of the outbreak is being handled by the Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES).

In the Basque Country, 49 positives have been detected among young people from Gipuzkoa who travelled to Mal‐ lorca, and the Ministry of Health is doing a screening of around 300 people. They are targeting students who went to Palma de Mallorca and came from a num‐ ber of schools and colleges in San Sebastian. The trips were organised by the students them‐ selves.

Aragon Ministry of Health re‐ ported 10 positive cases from a group of 15 people who trav‐ elled to Mallorca from June 12 to 18. Most came from Alcañiz.

Officials in Valencia reported 32 infected students from different students who made an end‐of‐ year high school trip to Mallorca by ferry on June 12.

The Epidemiology Service of the Region of Murcia has report‐ ed 18 positive cases.

Old Catalan tradition THE Flame of Canigou arrived in Manacor on the morning of June 24 and was left burning at the en‐ trance to the Old Town Hall during the following week.

The Flame arrived in Mallorca on the previous day and was ini‐ tially received in Alaro before be‐ ing transported onwards and in Manacor it was welcomed by the mayor, Miquel Oliver, and the del‐ egate of Linguistic Policy, Sebasti ià Llodra.

The Canigó Flame is a Catalan tradition linked to the summer solstice that takes place in various places in the Catalan Countries each year, between June 22 and 23.

This tradition begins with the renewal of the fire at the top of Canigou mountain and culminates in the lighting of the bonfires on the night of Sant Joan after the flame, carried out by volunteers, is distributed throughout the coun‐ try.

Due to the pandemic bonfires were not generally lit, but the tra‐ dition was still recognised as being part of the Catalan heritage.

World Heritage Site THERE were two main musical events to celebrate 10 years since the Sierra de Tramuntana in Mal‐ lorca became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Catalina Cladera, the Minister of the Territory, Maria Antònia Garcías and some 600 people attended a concert by the

band LA as they launched their latest album Evergreen Oak in Lluc on Saturday June 26., The area was adapted to maintain safety distances and the public was informed of the health recommendations before the concert and members of the audience were also invited to make use of the mask, although

it is no longer mandatory.

The main event was on June 29 and as well as speeches from rep‐ resentatives of different organisa‐ tions, to close the event there will be a concert of classical music by the string section of the Sympho‐ ny Orchestra of the Balearics on the esplanade of the Carthusian Monastery de Valldemossa.

Marratxi Local Police New mortuary

AT a cost of €160,000, the Marratxi Council has seen the completion of the refurbishment of the Local Po‐ lice headquarters.

The works have consisted of improving access to the public by removing some barriers and internally, the changing rooms, both female and male, have also been expanded, with new bathrooms and showers.

The refurbishment is also due to the need to adapt the facilities to the needs of the staff which currently consists of 58 people who needed a more spacious and more versatile building.

The mayor of Marratxí, Miquel Cabot when official‐ ly declaring the completion of the work on the Local Police barracks said “We have adapted the facilities so that the police are in better conditions and the public will also enjoy more accessible facilities. In ad‐ dition, we are grateful for the subsidy granted to us by the Consell de Mallorca to be able to carry out the reform.”

AT a cost of €667,678, the town of Consell has opened a new mortuary next to its graveyard.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Catalina Cladera, and the councillor for Econom‐ ic Promotion and Local Development, Jaume Alzamora, attended the inauguration of the new Consell funeral home with the mayor of the mu‐ nicipality, Andreu Isern.

The project has had the financial support of the Consell de Mallorca through the Municipal Investment Plan, with a grant of €195,000.

This is the first mortuary in the municipality, ocated next to the cemetery, with two pedestri‐ an accesses and direct access from the Alaro.

It has two receiving rooms, reception, com‐ mon room and parking and has been built with criteria of sustainability and energy efficiency, us‐ ing materials suitable for the environment.

Balearics cheer green list BALEARIC ISLAND offi‐ cials have welcomed changes to Britain’s green list. The Balearic Islands were added to it on June 24 and British holidaymakers are now free to travel there with fewer restrictions as from June 30.

Catalina Cladera, the President of the Council of Mallorca, tweeted: “Mallorca has been in‐ cluded in the territories of the ‘green list’ of the British and Northern Irish governments. From June 30, travellers from the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland who visit the island will not have to go into quaran‐ tine on their return.”

However, some Balearic Island officials urged continued cau‐ tion. Javier Pascuet, the director of tourism in Calvia, tweeted: “UK has multiplied by six daily #Covid‐19 cases in one month (2.694 to 16.395). Over 60 per cent of cases in Portugal are due to Delta variant, 99 per cent in the UK. We should keep control‐ ling people coming from the UK. New regulations may generate a false feeling of security. This is not over. Be careful!!”

On June 22, the Balearics had 51 new cases of Covid‐19, with 45 cases in Mallorca, five in Ibiza and one in Menorca.

In Portugal Covid cas‐ es rose by 1,556 on June 24, the biggest jump since late February when the country was still under lockdown.

More than half of the cases are of the Delta variant, first reported in India. The only area of Portugal to be added to the green list is the At‐ lantic archipelago of Madeira.

Before the Covid pan‐ demic, the Balearic Is‐ lands had five million British tourists annually.

THE UK’s Ambassador to Spain says he’s proud of the record of service provided by the Armed Forces and believes that their dedication to duty underscores their importance to British nationals living in Spain.

Ambassador Hugh Elliott said that as envoy to Spain he wears many hats and is involved in charitable works across the community, but that “one of the roles I am most proud to fulfil is that of Patron of the Royal British Legion in Spain.”

“As we celebrate not only Armed Forces Day, but the cen‐ tenary of the Legion, I wanted to reflect a little on what it means to me and why its work is so important to UK nationals in Spain,” he said in a press re‐ lease.

“On Saturday I was hon‐ oured to attend an event in Ori‐ huela, alongside serving offi‐ cers, veterans, families, reservists and volunteers, to mark this double commemora‐ tion,” he said, adding that just four weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be able to visit HMS Kent, while she made a port vis‐ it to Alicante ‐ a visible demon‐ stration of the close coopera‐ tion between the British Armed Forces and our Allies.

“The work of the Legion is likewise both longstanding and bilateral,” he said. “Over the last 100 years, it has fought to improve the lifelong care and support to serving and ex‐serv‐ ing personnel and their families, but its achievements are wider than many appreciate, both as champion of the Armed Forces and its contribution to wider so‐ ciety.”

He said the group works very closely alongside Spanish chari‐ ties such as Cruz Roja and makes every effort to relieve pressure on the Spanish sup‐ port services where they can.

“And speaking at the an‐ niversary event, the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana Galiano, could not have been

more welcoming or support‐ ive,” Ambassador Elliott said.

“To many of us, the Legion is only visible during the Poppy Appeal, but as I was able to hear in person from Don Cub‐ bon, District North Chair, and many others in Orihuela, it pro‐ vides year‐round support, which goes largely unseen,” he said.

“Over the last 18 months, the fundraising climate and Covid restrictions have made the work of the Community Support Team incredibly tough, but the Legion’s dedicated vol‐ unteers have found ways to de‐ liver much‐needed support to its beneficiaries in Spain, de‐ spite the difficult circum‐ stances,” he said.

New VAT rules for online shopping NEW EU‐wide Value‐Added Tax (VAT) rules for online shopping came into force this week as part of efforts to ensure a more lev‐ el playing field for all businesses. The new rules also aim to sim‐ plify cross‐border e‐commerce and introduce greater trans‐ parency for EU shoppers when it comes to pricing and consumer choice.

The new rules came into force on Wednesday July 1 and will af‐ fect online sellers and marketplaces/platforms both inside and outside the EU, postal operators and couriers, customs and tax ad‐ ministrations, as well as consumers.

Under the current system, goods imported into the EU valued at less than €22 by non‐EU companies are exempt from VAT. As from July 1, this exemption is now lifted.

Currently, e‐commerce sellers need to have a VAT registration in each Member State in which they have a turnover above a cer‐ tain overall threshold, which varies from country to country. From July 1, these different thresholds will be replaced by one common EU threshold of €10,000 above which the VAT must be paid in the Member State where the goods are delivered.

The EU’s VAT system was last updated in 1993 and has not kept pace with the rise in cross‐border e‐commerce.

CLEARLY in response to the negative publicity received following the arrival and subsequent illness of organised student groups from the mainland, the Balearic Government announced new regulations on Monday June 28.

As has been seen, large numbers of students have either re‐ turned home with coronavirus symptoms or have been isolated mainly in Mallorca which is dangerous on two different levels.

Firstly, regardless of whether the students were carriers in the first place or contracted the virus on Mallorca, any significant in‐ crease in infection is bad for visitors and residents alike.

Secondly, having just been added to the UK Green List, Balearic hoteliers and hospitality companies in particular are desperate to welcome UK families, yet any suggestion that there is a spike in contagion will possibly frighten tourists off.

To this end therefore, the Balearic Government recognising the exceptional conditions caused by student ‘study trips’, has made the following decision: Such trips may only be organised, booked and sold to groups of more than 20 people, if the organiser includes a group leader and the members prove, through an official document, a nega‐ tive PCR made in the 48 hours prior to arrival, or have received both vaccinations within the past eight months or have a medi‐ cal certificate showing that they have recovered from infection within the last six months.

There will be exceptions for certain groups, such as those at‐ tending a conference, a recognised organised event or sports competitions.

Once formally approved, this decree will stay in place until Ju‐ ly 31.

Javid promises lockdown will end

NEW UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid has pledged to lift lockdown

by July 19 while Labour has branded his “hapless” predecessor Matt Hancock “the stupidest man on earth.”

Javid said his task as Britain’s health tsar “is to help return the economic and cultural life that makes this country so great” but he warned the Delta variant is causing a “narrowing of the race between the virus and the vaccine.”

“In truth, no date we choose comes with zero risk for Covid.

We cannot simply eliminate it. We have to learn to live with it,” he said on June 28.

“Make no mistake, the restrictions on our freedoms must come to an end. We owe it to the British people not to wait a mo‐ ment longer than we need to. With the numbers heading in the right direction, July 19 remains our target date,” he added in his first address to parliament.

Javid was ushered into the role of Health Secretary when Matt Hancock was forced to resign after The Sun splashed salacious photos of him kissing his aide, Gina Coladangelo on June 25.

Within 24‐hours pressure from both inside and outside the To‐ ry party became too much and the former health secretary was forced to apologise and resign.

The Sun’s exposé featured images taken from CCTV footage in‐ side Hancock’s Whitehall office. Labour said the leak amounted to a “major security breach” and has called for an urgent investi‐ gation.

Warning over email fraud A WARNING has been released of a new mali‐ cious email campaign pretending to be from Vodafone.

The National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), based in Spain’s Leon has discovered a new dodgy email which tries to install malware on devices. The phishing email pretends to be from Vodafone.

The phishing email contains two links. The links are supposed to take you to an invoice which has not been paid, but in fact they take you to file meant to infect your device. This is a form of mal‐ ware.

If you have received one of these emails but on‐ ly clicked on the link to download the file you could still be safe. In this case it is essential that you find the file and delete it. The phishing email should then be deleted or sent to the trash too.

If you have clicked on the link, downloaded the

MALWARE: Your device may be infected. file and opened or executed the file then you could be in trouble and your device might be in‐ fected. In this case users should run a scan of their device with up‐to‐date anti‐virus software.

INCIBE offer a support service for users who are not sure how to remove malware and need assis‐ tance.

Mechanic crushed by lorry A MECHANIC in Sevilla who had been working underneath the cab of a lorry changing a wheel was crushed to death on Thursday June 24 when the jack gave way.

The 54‐year‐old man from Lebrija was dead by the time emergency services arrived on the scene.

The accident happened around 4.45pm in a lorry park‐

ing area at a roundabout on the A‐471 road into Lebrija. A co‐worker who was helping him change the tyre as the jack failed was unable to help the victim as the lorry fell on him.

Brit licences deadline extended THE Spanish Government has agreed to extend the deadline to exchange a British driving li‐ cence for a Spanish one from June 30 to October 31.

Negotiations are also under‐ way between Madrid and Lon‐ don to try and reach ‘mutual recognition’ for holders of British

driving licences in Spain and those using Spanish driving li‐ cences in the UK. “We know that many of you have been anxious that the recognition of UK driving li‐ cences was set to end on 30 June,” the UK embassy in Madrid posted on its Facebook

More than half have 1 jab MORE than half of Spain’s residents have received at least one coronavirus vaccination injection and more than 31.9 per cent have received both.

And on June 24, Spain broke its previously set record for administrating the largest number of vaccines in one day on June 24 with more than 680,000 people getting a jab.

Before that, the highest number of injections administered in a single day was some 654,000, back on June 11.

More than 80 per cent of people aged 40 or older have had one injection now, and 47 per cent have had both.

The government’s goal is to have 33 million people vac‐ cinated in Spain by the end of August, and the country re‐ mains on track to have 25 million people with both doses

by July 19.

Currently, all those over 80 years of age are fully vacci‐ nated as well as 96.4 per cent of those aged between 70 and 79. Of those aged from 50 to 59, 59.5 per cent have had both doses. Just over 34 per cent of those between 60 to 69 have had both doses.

If you arrived after January 1, your licence will only remain valid for six months from your arrival in Spain, the embassy said.

It says that if you did not regis‐ ter to exchange your licence with the DGT before December 30, 2020 and wish to exchange your UK driving licence now, you would need to follow the DGT process for non‐EU nationals ‐ and that includes taking a driving test.

The talks between London and Madrid hope to make it pos‐ sible to simply exchange UK driv‐ ing licences without taking a test.

O2 re-introduces roaming fees for Brits LGBT rates highest in Spain BRITISH mobile phone compa‐ ny, O2 has said it will re‐intro‐ duce roaming charges for cus‐ tomers who use their phones while travelling in the EU. A charge of £3.50 will come into force on August 2 on each gigabyte (GB) used over 25GB. Roaming charges were scrapped in the EU in 2017 and O2 said after Brexit it did not intend to re‐introduce them.

The EU scrapped roaming charges across its member states in 2017 after the Euro‐ pean Commission said that they amounted to a “market failure.”

In an email to customers, O2 said, “As your monthly UK data allowance is over 25GB, you can still use your data in our Europe Zone. But it’s now sub‐ ject to a Roaming Limit of 25GB. Once you’ve reached this limit, you’ll be charged an additional cost of £3.50/GB.” A spokesperson for O2 said, “Less than 1 per cent of our Pay Monthly customers reach anywhere near 25GB during occasional travel to Europe.

“If a customer’s UK monthly data allowance is over 25GB, from August 2 they will have a Roaming Limit of 25GB when

“This means they can use up to 25GB of their allowance at no extra cost ‐ we’ll text them if they get close to the limit, and again if they reach it.

SPAIN has the largest non‐ heterosexual population in Europe with a total of 78 per cent of Spaniards declaring themselves heterosexual while 12 per cent identify as belonging to other sexuali‐ ties.

Those rates are the high‐ est in Europe and third‐high‐ est globally.

The data, from an Ipsos survey on sexuality, said 6 per cent of Spaniards say they are bisexual, 5 per cent identify as gay and another other 1 per cent identify as ‘pansexual’, attraction re‐ gardless of the sex of the other person, or omnisexual, which is an attraction to all genders. Euthanasia law takes effect SPAIN’S new law on euthanasia took ef‐ fect on June 25, allowing the chronically and terminally ill to end their own life.

The law allows regional control commit‐ tees to review and authorise end‐of‐life decisions.

When a chronically or terminally ill pa‐ tient makes a request to end their life, a doctor must inform the patient about their diagnosis, therapeutic possibilities and expected results, as well as about pos‐ sible palliative care, making sure that they understand the information that is provid‐ ed.

After that, the patient must again con‐ firm their intention to end their own life.

After that second request, there should

be a new meeting between a new doctor and the patient. It will be this doctor who will authorise the process.

They are required to ask the opinion of a doctor trained in the ‘field of patholo‐ gies suffered by the patient’ but who is not from the ‘same team as the doctor.’

Likewise, the regional evaluation com‐ mission must choose two experts, one be‐ ing a lawyer, to evaluate the case.

Both experts must agree on their deci‐ sion. If not, the full committee would make the final call. Health professionals directly involved in this provision ‘may ex‐ ercise their right to conscientious objec‐ tion’ but those objections have to be ‘stat‐ ed in advance and in writing.’

Crowdfunding pays for girl’s cancer operation DOCTORS at a hospital in Barcelona have operated for Ewing’s sarcoma on Israe, a 10-year-old Moroccan girl whose treatment was made possible by a worldwide crowdfunding campaign.

Ewing’s sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that begins in the bones or surrounding soft tissues and usually occurs in children and adolescents.

Israe was diagnosed with pelvic cancer last January and, since she could not be operated on in her country due to the high surgical complexity and not being able to afford treatment abroad, her parents sought help. Thousands of people around the world responded to their crowdfunding campaign online.

Soylaiman Izaagague, Israe’s father, launched the campaign.

Within four months and with support from the media, he managed to draw thousands of people from all over the world to collaborate so that Israe could be operated on at the HM Nou Delfos Hospital.

The rare and complicated operation was needed to fix complex bone problems, and help damaged bones regenerate and come back to life.

Minimum wage hike on cards? Mask rule relaxed outdoors SPAIN’S President Pedro Sanchez and Labour and Social Economy Minister Yolanda Diaz were due to meet this week to consider hiking the minimum wage by 10 per cent.

The meeting follows a report from the Advisory Commission

for the Analysis of the Minimum Wage that recommended the 10 per cent hike on June 18.

If approved, the increase could see the minimum wage in Spain rise from €950 per month to €1,045 per month.

The government faces pres‐

sure to approve the increase not only because they face re‐elec‐ tion in 2023, but because of growing public anger against in‐ creasing living expenses and soaring electricity bills.

Diaz said she is in favour of raising the minimum wage by 10 per cent, but that it is up to the government to decide. “Our po‐ sition is known, but the govern‐ ment will decide,” she said on Thursday June 24.

“We have skyrocketing prices for electricity and other basic products. It is very striking that we leave those who need it most with this protection,” she added.

The Bank of Spain said earlier this month that the last mini‐ mum wage hike may have back‐ fired and cost the country 180,000 jobs. It said the increase impacted young people the most, while those over the age of 45 largely did not receive any benefit.

Young workers on the mini‐ mum wage now face reduced chances of getting a permanent contract and have probably seen their hours per month cut back.

SAFE DISTANCE: Although not necessary, many people are still opting to wear masks.

THE law in Spain states it is no longer necessary to wear a mask outdoors if you can keep a safe dis‐ tance. But this weekend, some people could be seen still wearing their masks while others weren’t.

In general, they responded that they thought it difficult to maintain a safe distance in crowded ar‐ eas, so they would continue to wear their masks as they did not feel safe in crowds.

The general opinion is that it’s better to be safe than sorry and some readers compared the situa‐ tion to the UK where masks have not been manda‐ tory outdoors and still have high figures.

One reader commented on the situation in Ali‐ cante saying “it’s disgraceful, bars and nightclubs

and streets with people in their thousands shoul‐ der to shoulder. I’ve also seen an article from WHO and the Delta variant is managing to infect people in Israel and other countries even though they’ve been vaccinated. Just look what’s happened in Mallorca as the result of a few days of students there.”

Another said that especially with tourists now arriving from different places she would not feel safe.

On the other hand, several readers claimed to feel safe regardless of if they’d had the jab and one said “I love being outdoors with no mask now.”

Another pointed out “Most masks don’t protect you from others, but will help protect others from you if you happen to be infectious. So while you may FEEL less safe not wearing a mask, you won’t actually be any less safe. So go out and enjoy the freedom. Unless you are worried about others in‐ fecting you. In which case, keep your distance.”

Readers support the right to choose WITH the Euthanasia Law hav‐ ing come into effect last week in Spain, we asked our readers if they are for or against it: 95.9 per cent were in favour.

BRITISH transport company National Express has announced its acquisi‐ tion of Transportes Rober (Rober) in Spain at a cost of €13 million.

The acquisition of Rober, which has operated the urban bus contract in Granada for more than 20 years, represents a further step in consoli‐ dating the regional and urban bus markets, a strategy which Alsa (which it also owns) has successfully

Bad bank review SPEAKING at a meeting in Santander, Spain’s Minister of the Economy Nadia Calvino explained her view of the fu‐ ture of Sareb, the National ‘Bad Bank’ which was set up after the 2008 financial crisis.

Currency outlook: Hawkish Fed turbocharges the US dollar, reopening delay rocks the pound

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.86 to £0.85 EUR/USD: Down from $1.22 to $1.19 The euro spent the first half of June trad‐ ing in a narrow range, as optimism over the reopening of more parts of the Eurozone offset some dovish forward guidance from the European Central Bank (ECB).

However the euro then suffered a dra‐ matic drop off in mid‐June, as the strong negative correlation in the EUR/USD pairing saw the single currency suffer following a surge in the US dollar.

EUR exchange rates have then remained largely subdued through the latter half of the month, only finding some modest sup‐ port on the back of some upbeat Eurozone PMI figures.

Looking ahead, with the ECB expected to maintain its dovish bias for some time, and indications that the Delta variant of the coronavirus is starting to spread through Europe, any upside in the euro over the next month may prove limited.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.15 to €1.16 GBP/USD: Down from $1.41 to $1.39 The pound has traded in a wide range over the past four weeks, amidst a mix of coronavirus and Brexit uncertainty.

In regards to coronavirus concerns, the rapid spread of the Delta variant through‐ out the UK, and the government’s subse‐ quent delaying of its reopening date dealt a major blow to Sterling.

Renewed Brexit tensions between the

UK and EU over the Northern Ireland proto‐ col has also driven volatility in GBP ex‐ change rates.

Sterling’s attempts to rally towards the end of June were then scuppered by the Bank of England (BoE) as it struck a disap‐ pointing dovish tone following its latest policy meeting.

Turning to next month, the direction of GBP exchange rates will largely depend on whether lifting of the remaining coron‐ avirus restrictions goes ahead on July 19 as planned, with any further delay likely to place considerable pressure on the pound.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.70 to £0.71 USD/EUR: Up from €0.81 to €0.83 The US dollar rallied sharply over the past month, with USD exchange rates strik‐ ing a two month high, following a surpris‐ ingly hawkish shift by the Federal Reserve.

The Fed’s more hawkish forward guid‐ ance came amidst a sharp upturn in US in‐ flationary pressure in May, as the country’s latest consumer price index printed at a dizzying 5 per cent.

However it wasn’t all plain sailing for the ‘greenback’ with some underwhelming US data, mostly notably May’s non‐farm pay‐ rolls, which printed well below expecta‐ tions for the second consecutive month.

Going forward, whether or not the US dollar is able to maintain its positive trajec‐ tory will likely depend quite a bit on June’s payroll figures as another disappointing reading could raise some concerns over an unbalance economic recovery.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT IT’S not often I allow myself to succumb to pure unmitigated anger.

I’m a bit long in the tooth for a condition that can sometimes create more problems than it actually eliminates.

But this week I encountered an exception to my own rule. It began with the announcement that poor white schoolchildren were under‐ achieving in UK schools. Oddly the UK media actually gave this news quite extensive coverage. (Deferring perhaps to the new GB channel that is literally plundering their viewing figures!) This announcement was bad enough, but it was watching the young white pupils being interviewed that truly got this old boy’s hackles up. Primarily it was quite a pleasant rarity to see two or three white pupils appear on the screen in succession!

However, that’s where any pleasurable viewing ended.

It was the general demeanour of these youngsters that got to me; they seemed confused and almost reticent to air their views on camera.

Educational opinions SCHOOLCHILDREN: Normally bright, happy and full of hope for the future.

The vast numbers of black and ethnic minority students, who regularly appear on these programmes for a whole cross section of their ‘educational opinions,’ are generally (unless they’re whinging) bright, happy and full of hope for the future. In contrast these white children seemed bewildered and

utterly lacking in confidence. This is a direct result of the woke and PC attitude toward the education of our youngsters; a system of the left which is deliberately concentrating so much on making sure the minorities are put to the fore and given every opportunity, they are neglecting the children of the white indigenous

majority. Instead of instilling them with national pride and confidence, these ‘privileged’ children are being made to feel ashamed of their ancestry and responsible for just about every malady that ails their great nation.

Everywhere they look they witness anti‐white propaganda; from their sportsmen taking the knee to the desecration of their historical statues.

Is it any wonder their grades are suffering and they are developing complexes of inferiority? This week (not for the first time) the BBC advertised jobs where only black and ethnic minorities need apply. This is a disgraceful example of the pure hypocrisy of an organisation that is supposed to be anti‐racist, but is actually steeped in racism and panders to the ethnic minorities purely to make sure Labour gets a favourable result in the next election.

(Some chance!) This is all a part of the insidious woke and Marxist BLM agenda.

Attack British culture, undermine its historical achievements, lower morale, diminish belief in itself and turn the citizens and families against each other. And where better to start than among the young and most impressionable? Have no doubt the aim of this evil ideology is not integration, it is domination. It’s time for the indigenous majority to stand up and be counted and let these people know that the UK is utterly sick of its whole traitorous anti British attitude. If not I’m afraid the white populace will finish up the same way as many have in South Africa.

And believe me, that is not a pleasant proposition at all!

Following in the wheel ruts of driving over lemons CONSULAR MATTERS IT’S fair to say that the vast majority of my work as a lawyer in the last 30 years has been acting for clients as an independent lawyer for purchases of villas and apartments, and now as Consul I am having many requests about having a property here, but what about buying your dream home in rural Spain?

Sandy beaches, convenient English‐ speaking bars and restaurants aren’t something that a small minority of buyers want here in Spain.

What about those of you who wish for example to emulate Chris Stewart in ‘Driving over Lemons’ in the Alpujar‐ ras and make a go of an off‐grid farm or finca as it is called here in Spain?

Well it’s certainly possible, I increasing‐ ly find myself in a rural Notary office signing for a client, but the legal chal‐ lenges you’ll face could be great.

Does the catastro match the escritura, if any? Does the seller have all the cor‐ rect paperwork? Do you have the right to take the spring water? Can you get a mortgage? Can you find all the owners

of the property? Who is responsible for the upkeep of the track and many oth‐ er potential problems.

One of the biggest mistakes that po‐ tential buyers make is that they as‐ sume that they can simply build a house or renovate a ruin.

Don’t be put off, the key here is once you have had your offer accepted like any other purchase in Spain is don’t sign or pay anything until you have taken some specialist legal advice from a lawyer that you have chosen yourself. That way you will have a

qualified legal opinion as to what you are getting into. The Spanish Solicitor or Abogado will be able to liaise with the authorities, local town hall, your ar‐ chitect and builders to ensure that you have the necessary licences to ensure that your rural retreat is everything that you want it to be.

So if you’re planning a move to Spain, whether it is for a new place in the sun or you plan to retire to Spain, take some independent advice. As with all my articles this isn’t legal advice and myself and many other lawyers are at your disposal. Of course ask the lawyer for their registration number and check with the Bar Association that they are able to practise.

If you plan to open a business like a holiday rental (Airbnb, Booking etc) then other legal requirements for will have to be met and this is something for a future article.

Follow the snail trail PROBABLY the most popular pets are cats, dogs or birds, but finding a family with a pet snail would most likely be quite rare.

Snails are quiet, they don’t take up much space, they don’t need to be taken for a walk, and it does not cost a lot to feed and care for them.

They can be kept in a spe‐ cial clear terrarium made of plastic or glass.

A layer of soil is needed at the bottom of the container, approximately 4cm deep, so they can bury themselves in it and it is also where they lay their eggs. Rather than earth from the garden, it is recom‐ mended a special terrarium earth is used, which can be bought from local pet stores, as garden soil may contain parasites.

As snails do not like ex‐ treme temperatures, keep them protected from the cold and the heat. A terracotta pot on its side gives them a good place to hide if there is sun.

These small creatures are

hermaphrodites, which means they have male and fe‐ male reproductive organs at the same time.

These molluscs are more active at night, when they feed and reproduce. They like to eat most green leaves,

vegetables, carrot halves, beetroot, etc.

At least once a week, the terrarium should be cleaned of all mucus and faeces, and any rotten food cleared away, as once decayed, it could be harmful to the snails.

THE spikelets are pods that cover the seeds of grass plants. They have a sharp point and several rough fila‐ ments.

When they pierce the skin or a natural Spikelets stick to dogs. hole, for example the ear, they act like a harpoon, they cannot go back, the fila‐ ments open like an umbrella and stick with increasing force at the point where they have been fixed.

In summer, the spikelets dry out and fall off the plant and easily adhere to the dog’s hair. They can be inserted into the skin in any area, but one of the places where they are easily inserted is between the fingers, creating fistulas.

The ears are another of the places where they can be in‐ troduced, being more frequent in dogs with long hair and floppy ears. They can cause severe otitis, sometimes perfo‐ rating the eardrum.

Sometimes they are aspirated and enter through the nos‐ tril causing sneezes, even with blood. It can continue moving forward and enter the lower respiratory tract reaching the lungs.

It can get into the eyes and cause conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers.

If you suspect it, you should go to the vet to proceed with its extraction. Many times it requires the use of endoscopes.

by Mark Slack IF you have looked at the price of most new cars you’ll have gathered they aren’t cheap, even small hatchbacks are not necessarily in the affordable bracket. However, value for money can be had from main‐ stream manufacturers if you are looking for a family car.

Citroen’s new C4 provided an enjoyable week’s motoring and with prices starting from a smidgen

The great value Citroen C4 over €24,498 (£21,000) it rep‐ resents incredibly good value for your motoring money.

There are petrol and diesel en‐ gines, manual or automatic gears and even full electric power.

Standard equipment across the board includes 18” wheels, LED lights, Apple Car

Play and Android Auto, Blue‐ tooth, height adjustable front seats, automatic dual zone air conditioning, rear parking sen‐ sors, auto lights and wipers and heated and powered door mirrors.

My test model was the mid‐ table Shine version with prices from a still very reasonable € 2 8 , 0 1 1 (£24,010),

bringing a significant ramp up in the standard equipment stakes. Petrol power for the range comes from a 1.2‐litre, three‐cylinder turbocharged unit in two power outputs, 129hp and 153hp. In my case the 129hp engine mated to a six‐speed manual gearbox.

The first thing that strikes you about the Citroen is re‐ finement, even under hard ac‐ celeration, when three‐cylin‐ ders generally sound like an over excited lawnmower, the Citroen is remarkably quiet.

It has a feeling of quality, not something that has always been a hallmark of Citroen’s past.

A nice slick gear change and well‐chosen ratios means the C4 bowls along with little ex‐ tra effort required from the driver, and it’s a comfortable place to be seated.

It’s no hot hatch and you certainly won’t want to be hustling it along twisty roads, even though the famously comfortable Citroen suspen‐ sion produces less body roll than you might imagine.

It’s a very modern looking car with swooping lines, espe‐

cially to the rear, but access and egress remains comfort‐ able and most who saw my test car loved the looks. This is a car aimed at the family in my view, and it does a great job of providing practical, well ‐ equipped transport at an af‐ fordable price.

As with sister manufacturer Peugeot the quality has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years, yet you do get a distinctly different car to any Peugeot stablemates.

I loved the C4, it has distinct echoes of Citroen’s quirky past but in a very useable, modern form in a great value package.
