Royal Ascot Ladies Day Charity Fashion

60% will receive aid package ONLY 60 per cent of the small‐ and medium‐sized businesses along with self‐employed work‐ ers in Marbella that requested di‐ rect aid set aside by the city coun‐ cil for the coronavirus pandemic and economic fallout will actually will receive funds.

The town hall has received nearly 2,400 requests for aid so far, and 1,480 have been resolved favourably. The rest have been re‐ jected.

ed from the aid scheme failed to prove that they registered a drop in sales of at least 30 per cent in sales in 2020 compared to 2019.

Mayor Angeles Muñoz, has de‐ scribed that “as a positive sign be‐ cause it favours speedy economic recovery.”

“Others did not have a physical address in the municipality or were not up‐to‐date with pay‐ ments with the Social Security or Treasury, which will prevent them from receiving funds that the ben‐

eficiary companies will receive during the month of July,” the mayor said.

Some of the applications also had had errors in documentation.

Cristobal Garre, Marbella’s del‐ egate for Economic Development, said the objective of local govern‐ ment was that at least 70 per cent of the applicants would benefit from the aid programme, with 90 per cent of successful applicants with €2,000, and the other 10 per cent with €3,000.

Fuengirola drops Border agreement start-up taxes Dressed to the nines.

All in all, the event raised just short of €650 for the local ‘Elena Gaite Foundation’ charity, a generous amount that was well received by the organisation.

With so many attending La Sala in style, a bottle of La Sala House Wine was awarded to Adele who was crowned best dressed lady on the day.

FUENGIROLA is encouraging new businesses and promoting economic recovery as it drops start-up taxes for the rest of the year.

The proposed measure still needs to be approved, but the proposal will be taken to the next ordinary plenary session in the hope that it will come into effect as soon as possible.

The move is set to cost the town hall around €200,000 in the hope that it will stimulate business activity and provide a boost to those who want to set up a business in Fuengirola.

The town hall will suspend the opening tax on businesses until the end of 2021.

“No one can doubt my commitment and that of my team to the self-employed, traders and entrepreneurs of Fuengirola, especially now, when the global health crisis we are experiencing has inflicted lethal damage on them in many cases,” said Mayor Ana Mula.

“Many of our government actions, before, during and after the pandemic, have always been aimed at creating the right conditions for Fuengirola to continue to be a prosperous place to set up any kind of business project,” she said.

ON June 28, the UK-Gibraltar Readiness NNO Board met in Gibraltar for the first time.

The role of the Board is to coordinate preparations between the UK and Gibraltar governments in the event of a Non Negotiated Outcome over the border with Spain and other Brexit matters.

The UK Minister for the European Neighbourhood and the Americas Wendy Morton MP opened the online meeting which was chaired jointly with the UK by the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that it was sensible and prudent, as had happened since 2016, to make plans for no agreement, even though the government remained fully committed to an agreement on the future relationship of Gibraltar with the European Union.

Marbella limits bikes on promenade MARBELLA City Council is clamping down on bicycles and electric scooters on the promenade this summer, banning them on weekends between 10am and 11pm until September 30. The new rules kick in today, Thursday July 1.

The city says the new rules seek to find a balance for everyone. Scooters in particular have become a problem and since early this year their use has been banned on footpaths and a number of other urban settings.

The measures for bicycles are similar to those imposed last summer.

Malaga rolls out drinking fountains MALAGA is set to double the number of drinking foun‐ tains by the end of the year.

The new fountains will be carefully placed throughout the districts of the city and will be distributed across the city in areas such as public squares and sports areas.

The number of pedestri‐ ans in each area has also been considered when choosing where to place the fountains.

The provision of 200 drinking fountains through‐ out Malaga has been put out to tender by Emasa.

Malaga residents already benefit from 150 fountains and these new fountains will see the total rise to 350 foun‐ tains in the city by the end of 2021.

The new fountains hope to provide a drinking foun‐ tain for every 1,400 resi‐ dents. Large cities such as Paris and Madrid have around 1,000 residents to every fountain and this is what Malaga is hoping to achieve in the future.

The plans will cost about €600,000 and will take around five months to be in‐ stalled.

‘Pride in our Armed Forces’ THE UK’s Ambassador to Spain says he’s proud of the record of service provided by the Armed Forces and be‐ lieves that their dedication to duty underscores their impor‐ tance to British nationals liv‐ ing in Spain.

Ambassador Hugh Elliott said that as envoy to Spain he wears many hats and is in‐ volved in charitable works across the community, but that “one of the roles I am most proud to fulfil is that of Patron of the Royal British Le‐ gion in Spain.”

“As we celebrate not only Armed Forces Day, but the centenary of the Legion, I wanted to reflect a little on what it means to me and why its work is so important to UK nationals in Spain,” he said in a press release.

“On Saturday I was hon‐ oured to attend an event in Orihuela, alongside serving of‐ ficers, veterans, families, re‐ servists and volunteers, to mark this double commemo‐ ration,” he said, adding that just four weeks ago, I was

Sign to stop LGTB abuse THE Youth and Equality delegation of Marbella Council has recently placed a special stop sign on the Avenida del Mar in collaboration with the as‐ sociation Marbella es Más.

The sign which simply says Stop LGTBIfobia was erected as one of the events on the occasion of Diversity Week.

Councillor, Enrique Rodríguez who took part in the unveiling commented “it was very important that there was something in the city that gave vis‐ ibility to this issue, which we often do not see and

perhaps think that LGTB‐phobic situations don’t happen.

“It is necessary to continue showing all the forcefulness against hate crimes and any type of discrimination and aggression against this group,” he said, then added that “young people are in‐ creasingly aware of this type of situation and we understand that with the passage of time these attitudes will become things of the past.”

A similar sign has been put up in the Parque de los Tres Jardines in San Pedro Alcantara.

One San Juan celebration WHILST the vast majority of towns along the Costa del Sol banned bonfires on beaches to celebrate the Festival of San Juan on June 23, Casares took the opposite view.

The council created a mag‐ nificent structure featuring cartoon characters and under strict safety measures, con‐ trolled social distancing and wearing of masks, a great evening was had by all.

The event at Playa Ancha started with a lively perfor‐ mance by Malaga band Aleja‐ dos who performed a selec‐ tion of pop and rock from the

1990s and at midnight, the ‘Juanito’ was set on fire re‐ motely.

By all accounts, it was a great evening enjoyed by all, who were grateful for the fact that they were some of

the privileged few across the Costa del Sol who could expe‐ rience the bonfire which had been designed by a Manilva artist, when so many others were unable to attend any festivity at all.

Lions roar THERE was a special event at the Times Bar in La Cala De Mijas recently when David Kay handed over his duties as Social Sec‐ retary for La Cala Lions, as he took over the role of this year’s President. More than 70 people enjoyed the celebration which raised €1,000 for the charity, which in turn uses all funds col‐ lected for the good of the local community.

Face masks at Marenostrum

Audiences can still enjoy the concerts.

DESPITE the fact that there is no longer a need under certain circumstances to wear a face mask in the open air, Fuen‐ girola Council will not relax the rules con‐ cerning attendance at the Marenostrum Festival.

The Council be‐ lieves that there would be a risk to members of the audi‐ ence if masks were n o t w o r n a n d c o u n‐ cillor for Culture Ro‐ drigo Romero ex‐ plained that the organisers had re‐ ceived the Andalucia Segura recognition in 2020 because of the strict hygiene mea‐ sures that it had put in place and with the audience coopera‐ tion, things went smoothly last year, when the threat of the pandemic was even greater.

To summarise, members of the pub‐ lic must wear the mask when seated and the required safety distances will be observed due to the staggered alloca‐ tion of their seats.

They can only re‐ move the mask when they are going to eat food or drink some‐ thing and when en‐ tering or leaving, go‐ ing to the bar or toilets should contin‐ ue to wear masks and endeavour to keep 1.5 metres away from other concert goers.

Calm and peaceful THE much-respected Joan Hunt OBE, founder and honorary president of the Cudeca Foundation in Benalmadena, sadly passed away on Thursday June 24 at the age of 92.

When her husband died of cancer in 1991, she found that his doctor Marisa Martin was especially helpful to her, particularly in coming to terms with what had happened, and she vowed to dedicate her life to helping others in similar situations.

Cudeca was set up in 1992 and has provided invaluable support for terminally ill people and their families ever since.

According to the Foundation, her last days were: “calm and peaceful, with moments of humour and laughter, and others when Joan decided to take charge of the situation. At all times she has been surrounded by the love and care of all of us at Cudeca.”

Joan left a final message which included the following: “Don’t be sad, celebrate my life, not my death. I have had a full and very happy life. I have worked hard, but always with enjoyment, surrounded by the great Cudeca team, of whom I am so proud and whom I admire so deeply. I have always been moved by the love, respect and dignity with which everyone at Cudeca cares for people at the most difficult time in their lives.

“Don’t send flowers to my funeral, send a donation. You all know that the donations I asked for at my husband Fred’s funeral were the starting point and the reason why I decided to create a special centre to care for patients at the end of their lives, and for their families. Well, now it is my turn, and I say the same again: send donations to provide care, support and company for those who need us most.”

Mask rule relaxed outdoors

SAFE DISTANCE: Although not necessary, many people are still opting to wear masks.

THE law in Spain states it is no longer necessary to wear a mask outdoors if you can keep a safe dis‐ tance. But this weekend, some people could be seen still wearing their masks while others weren’t.

We asked our readers if they felt safe enough to remove their masks.

In general, they responded that they thought it difficult to maintain a safe distance in crowded ar‐ eas, so they would continue to wear their masks as they did not feel safe in crowds.

The problem, some said, is that other people don’t seem to understand or care about maintain‐ ing a safe distance.

The general opinion is that it’s better to be safe than sorry and some readers compared the situa‐ tion to the UK where masks have not been manda‐ tory outdoors and still have high figures.

One reader commented on the situation in Ali‐ cante saying “it’s disgraceful, bars and nightclubs

and streets with people in their thousands shoul‐ der to shoulder. I’ve also seen an article from WHO and the Delta variant is managing to infect people in Israel and other countries even though they’ve been vaccinated. Just look what’s happened in Mallorca as the result of a few days of students there.”

Another said that especially with tourists now arriving from different places she would not feel safe.

On the other hand, several readers claimed to feel safe regardless of if they’d had the jab and one said “I love being outdoors with no mask now.”

Another pointed out “Most masks don’t protect you from others, but will help protect others from you if you happen to be infectious. So while you may FEEL less safe not wearing a mask, you won’t actually be any less safe. So go out and enjoy the freedom. Unless you are worried about others in‐ fecting you. In which case, keep your distance.”

Simply Surviving Group THE work of this charitable platform continues apace, as does the growth in membership, now up to over 730 via their Facebook page.

All of June’s activities are in aid of cherished local hospice charity CUDECA. A target of €3,000 was set initially, but so far over €4,000 has already been raised, with more still to come.

Last Thursday the group organised a BBQ and show at Restaurante La Sierra in Mijas where the sell‐out audience of 120 was treated to an evening of songs

by Andrew Lloyd Webber, sung beauti‐ fully by Dahlia Helsby and Oliver Leiva.

As a poignant coincidence Friday was the day that Cudeca founder Joan Hunt OBE passed away (in the very hospice that she worked so hard to create) and her huge contribution to the community was marked by a round of applause.

Organisers Val Williams and Alan Boardman offer their heartfelt thanks to the 26 businesses and individuals who put up raffle prices or auction lots.

A special mention must go to SSG member Derek Jones for his sponsorship of the entertainment. A marvellous total of €2,120 was raised on the night and this will be added to the approximately €1,250 raised through the sponsorship of six members who successfully shed

Details of this amount and an overall summary of the group’s fundrais‐ ing success will appear in next week’s edition of Euro Weekly News.

Simply Surviving Group is taking a break during the hottest months of July and August, but already a full pro‐ gramme of events is planned for the au‐ tumn. The nominated registered chari‐ ties to whom all donations will be given are, September ‐ Age Concern, October ‐ Lux Mundi and November ‐ Age Care.

The group’s Breakfast Club will continue through the summer and everyone is wel‐ come, members and non‐members alike.

This is to support the smaller cafes and bars in the Fuengirola and Mijas areas which are still suffering from a lack of tourist trade.

A special date for your diary is Wednesday September 15, when the group plans an event called ‘Fun At The Fort’. Martin and Michele Greene have generously offered their wonderful property ‘Fort Ingles’ free of charge and a day of fun and games is in store, to‐ gether with music by their talented son Charlton Greene. All proceeds from this one event will go to animal charities Pat’s Story and SOS.

Endesa beefs up fraud squad

HERE’S a shocker: Endesa fraud inspectors are beefing up against meter fiddlers and power scammers. And the recent hike in power rates is giving the inspectors’ fight new momen‐ tum.

Jose Antonio Franco is head of Endesa’s energy recovery de‐ partment, and his team are responsible for fighting fraud and to ensure that “all the energy that enters the system ends up being billed.”

“The detection rate for these losses has varied considerably over time,” Franco said. “We have evolved technically and in re‐ cent years we have doubled our best success rate. Fraud is now detected in one out of every two inspections, which is 25 per cent.”

Endesa is a pioneer in Spain in implementing artificial intelli‐ gence in the detection of electricity fraud, thanks to one man ‐ Javier Tejedor ‐ a telecommunications engineer who was already part of the company but in whom they spotted a great potential.

“I am self‐taught, I started in data science in 2012, on my own,” Tejedor says. “I was curious and I trained on platforms, many free, where there is a lot of high‐quality content available,” he says, adding Endesa saw the possibilities in fighting fraud.

Franco says that no matter how robust the fraudster is, they look for a way to defraud.

“Before, with the old‐fashioned mechanical counter meters, it was very obvious, very simple, fraud was done by oneself, or by a brother‐in‐law, but now it is done by someone who is prepared, he has become professional, and you even find integrated circuits inside the meters,” he says.

O2 re-introduces roaming fees for Brits LGBT rates highest in Spain BRITISH mobile phone compa‐ ny, O2 has said it will re‐intro‐ duce roaming charges for cus‐ tomers who use their phones while travelling in the EU. A charge of £3.50 will come into force on August 2 on each gigabyte (GB) used over 25GB. Roaming charges were scrapped in the EU in 2017 and O2 said after Brexit it did not intend to re‐introduce them.

The EU scrapped roaming charges across its member states in 2017 after the Euro‐ pean Commission said that they amounted to a “market failure.”

In an email to customers, O2 said, “As your monthly UK data allowance is over 25GB, you can still use your data in our Europe Zone. But it’s now sub‐ ject to a Roaming Limit of 25GB. Once you’ve reached this limit, you’ll be charged an additional cost of £3.50/GB.” A spokesperson for O2 said, “Less than 1 per cent of our Pay Monthly customers reach anywhere near 25GB during occasional travel to Europe.

“If a customer’s UK monthly data allowance is over 25GB, from August 2 they will have a Roaming Limit of 25GB when

roaming in our Europe Zone.

“This means they can use up to 25GB of their allowance at no extra cost ‐ we’ll text them if they get close to the limit, and again if they reach it.

“A customer can still use da‐ ta if they reach our Roaming Limit, but will be charged £3.50/GB,” the spokesperson added.

SPAIN has the largest non‐ heterosexual population in Europe with a total of 78 per cent of Spaniards declaring themselves heterosexual while 12 per cent identify as belonging to other sexuali‐ ties.

Those rates are the high‐ est in Europe and third‐high‐ est globally.

The data, from an Ipsos survey on sexuality, said 6 per cent of Spaniards say they are bisexual, 5 per cent identify as gay and another other 1 per cent identify as ‘pansexual’, attraction re‐ gardless of the sex of the other person, or omnisexual, which is an attraction to all genders. Euthanasia law takes effect SPAIN’S new law on euthanasia took ef‐ fect on June 25, allowing the chronically and terminally ill to end their own life.

The law allows regional control commit‐ tees to review and authorise end‐of‐life decisions.

When a chronically or terminally ill pa‐ tient makes a request to end their life, a doctor must inform the patient about their diagnosis, therapeutic possibilities and expected results, as well as about pos‐ sible palliative care, making sure that they understand the information that is provid‐ ed.

After that, the patient must again con‐ firm their intention to end their own life.

After that second request, there should

be a new meeting between a new doctor and the patient. It will be this doctor who will authorise the process.

They are required to ask the opinion of a doctor trained in the ‘field of patholo‐ gies suffered by the patient’ but who is not from the ‘same team as the doctor.’

Likewise, the regional evaluation com‐ mission must choose two experts, one be‐ ing a lawyer, to evaluate the case.

Both experts must agree on their deci‐ sion. If not, the full committee would make the final call. Health professionals directly involved in this provision ‘may ex‐ ercise their right to conscientious objec‐ tion’ but those objections have to be ‘stat‐ ed in advance and in writing.’

Hospital failed to treat TB patient

A COURT in Sevilla has ordered the Andalucian Health Service (SAS) to pay €20,400 to the family of a 69-year-old woman who died in October 2018 from tuberculosis that was not diagnosed, nor treated.

The Patient Ombudsman said that the poor medical treatment occurred at Reina Sofía Hospital in Cordoba and dated back to January 2017 when the patient was treated with medication for her Crohn-type inflammatory bowel disease.

The immunosuppressant drug, however, has the ability to awaken bacteria that cause tuberculosis.

Some 15 per cent of Spaniards, especially those over 40, are unaware that they have latent tuberculosis. Medical staff are supposed to carry out a tuberculin test, which must be repeated, to ensure that the person does not have latent TB before administering the drug.

The test was not repeated and a CT scan that showed the TB infection also went unnoticed.

“Although we are still far from pre‐pandemic levels, the data suggest that we have begun a gradual recovery in mobility, which will increase with the ad‐ vance of vaccinations, the lifting of restrictions and the implemen‐ tation of measures such as the EU Covid digital certificate,” Reyes Maroto, the Minister of In‐ dustry, Commerce and Tourism, said on Wednesday June 23.

The largest number of passen‐ gers arrived from Germany with 407,431 travellers or 29.2 per cent of the total; there were 191,035 French passengers and 98,329 passengers from Switzer‐ land.

The Balearic Islands was the main destination with 386,247 international passengers arriving at its airports followed by the Community of Madrid with 351,647 travellers; Catalonia with 196,466 passengers; the Canary Islands with 159,292; Andalucia had 152,292 international ar‐ rivals and Valencia had 136,806.

Warning on email fraud A WARNING has been released of a new mali‐ cious email campaign pretending to be from Vodafone.

The National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), based in Spain’s Leon has discovered a new dodgy email which tries to install malware on devices. The phishing email pretends to be from Vodafone.

The phishing email contains two links. The links are supposed to take you to an invoice which has not been paid, but in fact they take you to file meant to infect your device. This is a form of mal‐ ware.

If you have received one of these emails but on‐ ly clicked on the link to download the file you could still be safe. In this case it is essential that you find the file and delete it. The phishing email should then be deleted or sent to the trash too.

If you have clicked on the link, downloaded the

MALWARE: Your device may be infected. file and opened or executed the file then you could be in trouble and your device might be in‐ fected. In this case users should run a scan of their device with up‐to‐date anti‐virus software.

Mechanic crushed by lorry A MECHANIC in Sevilla who had been working underneath the cab of a lorry changing a wheel was crushed to death on Thursday June 24 when the jack gave way.

The 54‐year‐old man from Lebrija was dead by the time emergency services arrived on the scene.

The accident happened around 4.45pm in a lorry park‐

ing area at a roundabout on the A‐471 road into Lebrija. A co‐worker who was helping him change the tyre as the jack failed was unable to help the victim as the lorry fell on him.

Brit licences deadline extended THE Spanish Government has agreed to extend the deadline to exchange a British driving li‐ cence for a Spanish one from June 30 to October 31.

Negotiations are also under‐ way between Madrid and Lon‐ don to try and reach ‘mutual recognition’ for holders of British

driving licences in Spain and those using Spanish driving li‐ cences in the UK. “We know that many of you have been anxious that the recognition of UK driving li‐ cences was set to end on 30 June,” the UK embassy in Madrid posted on its Facebook

Why Russia fired on HMS Defender WAR SHIP: The UK denied an incident took place.

RUSSIAN claims that it fired on HMS Defender, which was in the Black Sea on a NATO mission, came just two days af‐ ter the UK signed an agree‐ ment to boost Ukraine’s naval capabilities.

Britain and Ukraine inked a naval cooperation agreement on June 21 onboard the HMS Defender which will include the development of a new naval base in the Sea of Avoz along with eight hi‐tech naval war‐ ships for Ukraine.

Russia has been meddling in Ukrainian affairs for more than a decade, since the ex‐Soviet country made a bid to sign a co‐

operation agreement that would bring it closer to the EU. In 2014 Russia annexed Crimea and has encouraged separatists in eastern Ukraine.

The June 21 agreement for the UK to bolster Ukraine’s naval capabilities was signed by Minister for Defence Procure‐ ment Jeremy Quin and First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Tony Radakin representing the UK and the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Oleksandr Myroniuk.

“The UK and Ukraine have a close defence relationship, and we continue to strengthen this partnership to help deter

shared threats,” said Mr Quin, the minister responsible for naval procurement.

The deal is likely to have an‐ gered Moscow as it includes the sale of missiles which can be in‐ tegrated into existing Ukrainian naval and military platforms.

Two days later, on June 23, Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed a coastguard vessel had shot at HMS Defender be‐ cause it had breached Russia’s territorial water. The UK how‐ ever swiftly denied an incident had taken place and said Russia was conducting regular exercis‐ es and did not fire at the war ship.

RYANAIR launched a blistering attack on Ireland’s Transport Minister Eamonn Ryan who has not yet reopened Ireland to air travel. The low‐cost airline, Ireland’s biggest carrier, on Wednes‐ day June 23 called on Minister Ryan to clarify why, when 18 other EU countries are now issuing the Digital Green Cert, he has failed to do so for Ireland’s vaccinated citizens.

British visitors arriving by air must quarantine for 10 days, but the airline pointed out that if they were to fly into Belfast instead, they can drive across the border from Northern Ireland with no restrictions whatsoever.

“With less than 50 Covid patients in our hospitals, and less than 20 in our ICUs, Ireland continues to delay the recovery of avi‐ ation and tourism due to the bogus and non‐medical fears about a Delta variant in the UK which is not resistant to vaccines,” Ryanair’s Eddie Wilson said. “It is time for Minister Ryan to wake up and roll out the EU Digital Cert at least for those Irish citizens who have been double vaccinated, and this can be switched on today! Negative PCR tests and Covid recoveries can be added lat‐ er.”

Man tries to drown dog A MAN has been arrested in Madrid’s Coslada after he attempted to drown his dog in the middle of the street.

Luckily for the poor animal, Local Police officers were able to intervene. According to the local council the man was ar-

rested in Coslada by the Local Police after he attempted to drown his dog. He has been arrested for suspected abuse.

The shocking event happened a few days ago, but luckily Local Police officers were on patrol and caught the

man red-handed. The officers spotted the man, who appeared drunk at the time, as he tried to drown a dog.

Thanks to the quick action of the officers the life of Oso, the dog was saved.

The dog had been microchipped so it was possible to find out that the man who had tried to drown him, was in fact his owner.

Oso was taken by the Local Police officers to an Animal Protection Centre, where he is set to stay for a while. The dog’s owner has been arrested for the alleged offence of mistreatment, and he was also arrested for assaulting a police officer who stepped in to stop him from drowning the dog.

The City Council are seeking authorisation from the Community of Madrid to change the dog’s ownership over to the Animal Protection Centre. As soon as change of ownership has gone through the current owner will be disqualified from owning further animals.

Buckingham Palace says it ‘must do more’ to improve ethnic diversity BUCKINGHAM PALACE has released figures showing the levels of ethnic minority staff and says it “must do more” because levels are “not where it would like to be.” The release of the figures comes after the Royal family became embroiled in controversy after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex aired racism complaints during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The palace report shows that just 8.5 per cent of staff belonged to an ethnic minority in the year 20202021. It says it will increase this to 10 per cent in the coming year.

New VAT rules for online shopping NEW EU‐wide Value‐Added Tax (VAT) rules for online shopping came into force this week as part of efforts to ensure a more level playing field for all businesses. The new rules also aim to simplify cross‐border e‐commerce and introduce greater trans‐ parency for EU shoppers when it comes to pricing and consumer choice.

The new rules came into force on Wednesday July 1 and will affect online sell‐ ers and marketplaces/platforms both inside and outside the EU, postal operators and couriers, customs and tax administrations, as well as consumers.

Under the current system, goods import‐

ed into the EU valued at less than €22 by non‐EU companies are exempt from VAT. As from July 1, this exemption is now lifted.

Currently, e‐commerce sellers need to have a VAT registration in each Member State in which they have a turnover above a certain overall threshold, which varies from country to country. From July 1, these differ‐ ent thresholds will be replaced by one com‐ mon EU threshold of €10,000 above which the VAT must be paid in the Member State where the goods are delivered.

Madrid terminals Extension for reopen in July cross-border workers

IN yet another sign that things are slowly returning to normal, Aena has announced that it will be reopening terminals T2 and T3 in Madrid’s Barajas Airport this coming July 1. The termi‐ nals have been adapted for coronavirus and the health and safety of passengers.

With the reopening of these two terminals, it means that Madrid’s airport will be fully op‐ erational once again, and back to pre‐pandemic functionality.

AENA recommends passengers who plan to travel in the next few days to check first with their airline, because if their re‐ turn flight is on the same day,

THE government has approved extending health care for cross‐border workers who work in Gibraltar but live in Spain. The measure is being extended for four months until the end of October, Madrid said June 22.

The extension will allow officials from both the UK and Spain to contin‐ ue talks on issues arising from Brexit.

Juan Lozano, the president of Campo de Gibraltar, said he’s satisfied with the extension of health care for the cross‐border workers and other measures such as recognising the British driving licence and the provision for degrees from universities and higher education centres and other studies. “The correct decisions adopted by the government of Spain mean that people … regardless of their nationality ‐ Spanish and British ‐ are not affected in this negotiation period in which we are currently im‐ mersed,” Lozano said.

He expressed appreciation for “the involvement and firm commitment made by the government of Spain to the Campo de Gibraltar and its citi‐ zens.”

Brits and Italians moving to Canaries THE Canary Islands have experienced an increase in population despite the fact that they have registered more deaths than births. That increase of 0.33 per cent is thanks to the arrival of immigrants - mainly Brits and Italians. The Canary Islands began 2021 with 2.24 million inhabitants, an increase of 7,501 people compared to January 1, 2020, thanks to new residents arriving from abroad. According to the National Institute of Statistics, in 2020 3,274 more people died in the Canary Islands than were born. That figure is however offset by arrivals including 2,079 Brits; 1,517 Italians; 1,106 Spaniards returning from abroad; 896 Germans; 719 Colombians; 517 Venezuelans and 434 Moroccans.

Minimum wage hike on cards?

S P A I N’S President Pedro Sanchez and Labour and So‐ cial Economy Minister Yolan‐ da Diaz were due to meet this week to consider hiking the minimum wage by 10 per cent.

The meeting follows a re‐ port from the Advisory Com‐ mission for the Analysis of the Minimum Wage that rec‐ ommended the 10 per cent hike on June 18.

If approved, the increase could see the minimum wage in Spain rise from €950 per month to €1,045 per month.

The government faces

pressure to approve the in‐ crease not only because they face re‐election in 2023, but because of growing public anger against increasing liv‐ ing expenses and soaring electricity bills.

Diaz said she is in favour of raising the minimum wage by 10 per cent, but that it is up to the government to decide.

“Our position is known, but the government will decide,” she said on Thursday June 24.

“We have skyrocketing prices for electricity and oth‐ er basic products. It is very

striking that we leave those who need it most with this protection,” she added.

The Bank of Spain said ear‐ lier this month that the last minimum wage hike may have backfired and cost the country 180,000 jobs. It said the increase impacted young people the most, while those over the age of 45 largely did not receive any benefit.

Young workers on the min‐ imum wage now face re‐ duced chances of getting a permanent contract and have probably seen their hours per month cut back.

Ceuta: Don’t feed immigrants

A GOVERNMENT delegate has asked Ceuta residents not to give food to immigrants to try and stop them from loitering near supermarkets and restaurants.

A government delegate in Ceuta, Salvadora Mateos, has asked people not to hand out food to Moroccans who remain in the city following a recent dramatic increase in immigration.

In May Spain mobilised the army in Ceuta after more than 5,000 immigrants entered the autonomous city in a single day. Authorities said that they entered via the Tarajal and Benzu maritime breakwaters.

Treasury to axe interns

IN the coming months, the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) will dispense with 1,500 interns who have provided emergency assistance in managing benefits for the unemployed and workers af‐ fected by ERTE. The interns were employed to alleviate the workload in the organisation after an avalanche of appli‐ cations for the emergency support programme.

The influx of interns, however, failed to prevent services from collapsing as hundreds of thousands of suspended workers received their benefits late or the amount they received was incorrect.

Currently, there are half a million more unemployed in Spain than before the pandemic and another half a million workers affected by ERTE. The SEPE staff amounts to 7,000 people who have been warned in recent months that there are insufficient staff for the volume of services they must provide.

The ministries of Finance and Public Function are trying to negotiate with unions to establish a new labour framework that reduces the volume of temporary contracts and enables more full‐time staff.

The union complained that the departure of 1,500 workers means that the SEPE will lose 20 per cent of the workforce with which it currently operates and that the evolution of the labour market is uncer‐ tain between now and the end of the year when the last interns hired will be let go.

A new reality show based on La Sala Banus IT has been some time since there has been a ‘fly on the wall’ documentary about life on the Costa del Sol, but a new collaboration between the Sala Group and Warrior Film Productions might see that change.

When Ian Radford, Chairman of Sala Group met Jeff Clarke, Managing Director of Warrior Film Productions at a charity event on the Costa del Sol, they got chatting.

Both businesses had suffered dramatically from the lockdown and the pandemic, and two of the Warrior productions which were due to be filmed in the UK last year just had to be put on hold.

Equally, the very popular La Sala Banus was closed for months and has only recently re‐ opened but whilst relatively busy, is experiencing a lack of British tourists.

So, after chatting for a while, they both decid‐ ed that a story showing the good, the bad and occasionally ugly truth about living and working on the Costa del Sol based on staff and visitors to both La Sala Banus and La Sala by the Sea would be a great topic for a TV series.

Initial footage has already been filmed under the direction of local cinematographer Mark Bel‐ tran and this will be presented as a mini pilot for the proposed series.

It is planned that there will be an initial six one‐hour programmes following the lives and back stories of a number of those working for La Sala Marbella, but it won’t be all glitz and glamour as it will tackle the past year and how

Passenger faked PCR test A MAN who tried to fly from Brussels Airport with a falsi‐ fied PCR test has been sen‐ tenced to a year in jail. The sentence is the first handed

down by Belgian courts since authorities announced in April that using a false PCR test would be punishable by prison time.

Venice to ‘danger’ list UNESCO may add Venice to the list of ‘World Heritage in Danger’ after advisors warned the city is facing a series of threats.

“The continued deteriorating effects of human intervention, combined with climate change on the vulnerable lagoon ecosystem, threaten to result in irreversible change,” the body said this week. It said cruise ships are deemed a ‘threat’ to the famous Italian city as they continue to sail through the historic city’s water front centre, despite the Italian government ruling that they should be banned.

“While legal bans already exist for ships over 40,000 gross ton to enter the Venice Lagoon, it has no practical effect, as no alternative exists for the mooring of these large ships,” UNESCO said, adding a long-term solution was needed as a matter of urgency.

Authorities say that be‐ tween April 19 and June 11, 576 people were discovered with a forged PCR test at Brussels Airport after Bel‐ gium allowed non‐essential foreign travel. Travellers are required to show a negative PCR test result and complete a locator form.

Failing to fill in the form correctly, making a false declaration or attempting to beat the PCR test system can result in an immediate €750 fine or further prosecution.

The man jailed on Tues‐ day, June 22, presented a negative PCR result from a friend who had falsified the test. He had also refused to accept an out‐of‐court agreement and failed to ap‐ pear before judges.

The court said the man’s behaviour was “not only an‐ tisocial” but was also poten‐ tially life‐threatening, and the jail term was appropri‐ ate given the circumstances of the case.

Crowdfunding pays for girl’s cancer operation DOCTORS at a hospital in Barcelona have operated for Ewing’s sarcoma on Israe, a 10-year-old Moroccan girl whose treatment was made possible by a worldwide crowdfunding campaign.

Ewing’s sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that begins in the bones or surrounding soft tissues and usually occurs in children and adolescents.

Israe was diagnosed with pelvic cancer last January and, since she could not be operated on in her country due to the high surgical complexity and not being able to afford treatment abroad, her parents sought help. Thousands of people around the world responded to their crowdfunding campaign online.

Soylaiman Izaagague, Israe’s father, launched the campaign.

Within four months and with support from the media, he managed to draw thousands of people from all over the world to collaborate so that Israe could be operated on at the HM Nou Delfos Hospital.

The rare and complicated operation was needed to fix complex bone problems, and help damaged bones regenerate and come back to life.

Watch out for Crimean-Congo fever!

A WOMAN, 68, was admitted last Friday, June 25, to the Hospital Rio Hortega of Val‐ ladolid in northern Spain with

a suspected case of Crimean‐ Congo fever, which is caused by tick bites.

According to health sources,

the woman has been isolated since then and samples have already been sent to the San Carlos Institute in Madrid.

Gijon man faked cancer to dupe lover NATIONAL POLICE officers in Gijon have arrested a 56‐year‐old man, accused of pretending to have been the victim of a kidnapping attempt, inventing the story in an effort to stop his girl‐ friend from leaving him.

Police say he first sent anonymous threatening letters to his partner to make her believe that she was in danger, and then pretended to have been kidnapped by a gang to try and force him to leave the relationship.

Investigating officers say he also duped her into believing that he had terminal cancer in a bid to stop her from leaving him.

Eventually, the man admitted to the police that he had invented his story, with their investiga‐ tions into him finding that he had never been treated for any serious pathology. He was charged, released and a trial is pending.

If results come back positive for the disease then this would be the second case in just over two months as on April 26, the General Directorate of Public Health and its Epidemiology Service confirmed one other in the province of Salamanca.

Crimean‐Congo haemor‐ rhagic fever is caused by a virus, the main transmission mechanism of which is the bite of the Hyalomma genus tick. It has a fatality rate of between 10 and 40 per cent.

According to the regional government, the patient in Salamanca was a 59‐year‐old man, a farmer who by profes‐ sion was in constant contact with animals.

100 Griffon vultures poisoned WILDLIFE officers, environmental and nature specialists along with police are investigating the mass poisoning of some 100 Griffon vulture birds near Salamanca in the past week.

At least half have died from the poisoning which authorities believe was deliberate. The poisoning came to light on June 23 in the municipality of Monterrubio de Armuña bear Salamanca.

Also found were a black vulture and a black kite, but until the results of necropsies on the dead birds come back, officials won’t know exactly what killed them.

The surviving birds have been taken to the Las Dunas Wildlife Reception Centre, also in Salamanca, and to the Wild Animals Recovery Centre in Valladolid. Officials say they don’t know how many of the birds might survive.

A citizen raised the alarm and environmental officers of the Junta de Castilla y Leon along with Seprona police, went to inspect the reported site. The birds had been feasting on sheep carrion. Some 20 birds were present and still alive, but the officers were unable to capture them.

Vets from Las Dunas and CRAS de Valladolid carried out the necropsies.

BRITISH transport company National Express has announced its acquisi‐ tion of Transportes Rober (Rober) in Spain at a cost of €13 million.

The acquisition of Rober, which has operated the urban bus contract in Granada for more than 20 years, represents a further step in consoli‐ dating the regional and urban bus markets, a strategy which Alsa (which it also owns) has successfully

Bad bank review SPEAKING at a meeting in Santander, Spain’s Minister of the Economy Nadia Calvino explained her view of the fu‐ ture of Sareb, the National ‘Bad Bank’ which was set up after the 2008 financial crisis.

Currency outlook: Hawkish Fed turbocharges the US dollar, reopening delay rocks the pound

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.86 to £0.85 EUR/USD: Down from $1.22 to $1.19 The euro spent the first half of June trad‐ ing in a narrow range, as optimism over the reopening of more parts of the Eurozone offset some dovish forward guidance from the European Central Bank (ECB).

However the euro then suffered a dra‐ matic drop off in mid‐June, as the strong negative correlation in the EUR/USD pairing saw the single currency suffer following a surge in the US dollar.

EUR exchange rates have then remained largely subdued through the latter half of the month, only finding some modest sup‐ port on the back of some upbeat Eurozone PMI figures.

Looking ahead, with the ECB expected to maintain its dovish bias for some time, and indications that the Delta variant of the coronavirus is starting to spread through Europe, any upside in the euro over the next month may prove limited.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.15 to €1.16 GBP/USD: Down from $1.41 to $1.39 The pound has traded in a wide range over the past four weeks, amidst a mix of coronavirus and Brexit uncertainty.

In regards to coronavirus concerns, the rapid spread of the Delta variant through‐ out the UK, and the government’s subse‐ quent delaying of its reopening date dealt a major blow to Sterling.

Renewed Brexit tensions between the

UK and EU over the Northern Ireland proto‐ col has also driven volatility in GBP ex‐ change rates.

Sterling’s attempts to rally towards the end of June were then scuppered by the Bank of England (BoE) as it struck a disap‐ pointing dovish tone following its latest policy meeting.

Turning to next month, the direction of GBP exchange rates will largely depend on whether lifting of the remaining coron‐ avirus restrictions goes ahead on July 19 as planned, with any further delay likely to place considerable pressure on the pound.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.70 to £0.71 USD/EUR: Up from €0.81 to €0.83 The US dollar rallied sharply over the past month, with USD exchange rates strik‐ ing a two month high, following a surpris‐ ingly hawkish shift by the Federal Reserve.

The Fed’s more hawkish forward guid‐ ance came amidst a sharp upturn in US in‐ flationary pressure in May, as the country’s latest consumer price index printed at a dizzying 5 per cent.

However it wasn’t all plain sailing for the ‘greenback’ with some underwhelming US data, mostly notably May’s non‐farm pay‐ rolls, which printed well below expecta‐ tions for the second consecutive month.

Going forward, whether or not the US dollar is able to maintain its positive trajec‐ tory will likely depend quite a bit on June’s payroll figures as another disappointing reading could raise some concerns over an unbalance economic recovery.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT IT’S not often I allow myself to succumb to pure unmitigated anger.

I’m a bit long in the tooth for a condition that can sometimes create more problems than it actually eliminates.

But this week I encountered an exception to my own rule. It began with the announcement that poor white schoolchildren were under‐ achieving in UK schools. Oddly the UK media actually gave this news quite extensive coverage. (Deferring perhaps to the new GB channel that is literally plundering their viewing figures!) This announcement was bad enough, but it was watching the young white pupils being interviewed that truly got this old boy’s hackles up. Primarily it was quite a pleasant rarity to see two or three white pupils appear on the screen in succession!

However, that’s where any pleasurable viewing ended.

It was the general demeanour of these youngsters that got to me; they seemed confused and almost reticent to air their views on camera.

Educational opinions SCHOOLCHILDREN: Normally bright, happy and full of hope for the future.

The vast numbers of black and ethnic minority students, who regularly appear on these programmes for a whole cross section of their ‘educational opinions,’ are generally (unless they’re whinging) bright, happy and full of hope for the future. In contrast these white children seemed bewildered and

utterly lacking in confidence. This is a direct result of the woke and PC attitude toward the education of our youngsters; a system of the left which is deliberately concentrating so much on making sure the minorities are put to the fore and given every opportunity, they are neglecting the children of the white indigenous

majority. Instead of instilling them with national pride and confidence, these ‘privileged’ children are being made to feel ashamed of their ancestry and responsible for just about every malady that ails their great nation.

Everywhere they look they witness anti‐white propaganda; from their sportsmen taking the knee to the desecration of their historical statues.

Is it any wonder their grades are suffering and they are developing complexes of inferiority? This week (not for the first time) the BBC advertised jobs where only black and ethnic minorities need apply. This is a disgraceful example of the pure hypocrisy of an organisation that is supposed to be anti‐racist, but is actually steeped in racism and panders to the ethnic minorities purely to make sure Labour gets a favourable result in the next election.

(Some chance!) This is all a part of the insidious woke and Marxist BLM agenda.

Attack British culture, undermine its historical achievements, lower morale, diminish belief in itself and turn the citizens and families against each other. And where better to start than among the young and most impressionable? Have no doubt the aim of this evil ideology is not integration, it is domination. It’s time for the indigenous majority to stand up and be counted and let these people know that the UK is utterly sick of its whole traitorous anti British attitude. If not I’m afraid the white populace will finish up the same way as many have in South Africa.

And believe me, that is not a pleasant proposition at all!

One of the biggest mistakes that po‐ tential buyers make is that they as‐ sume that they can simply build a house or renovate a ruin.

Don’t be put off, the key here is once you have had your offer accepted like any other purchase in Spain is don’t sign or pay anything until you have taken some specialist legal advice from a lawyer that you have chosen yourself. That way you will have a

qualified legal opinion as to what you are getting into. The Spanish Solicitor or Abogado will be able to liaise with the authorities, local town hall, your ar‐ chitect and builders to ensure that you have the necessary licences to ensure that your rural retreat is everything that you want it to be.

So if you’re planning a move to Spain, whether it is for a new place in the sun or you plan to retire to Spain, take some independent advice. As with all my articles this isn’t legal advice and myself and many other lawyers are at your disposal. Of course ask the lawyer for their registration number and check with the Bar Association that they are able to practise.

If you plan to open a business like a holiday rental (Airbnb, Booking etc) then other legal requirements for will have to be met and this is something for a future article.

SPARE a thought today for all the virtue‐sig‐ nalling going on. Have some sympathy for this plague of wokery which decrees that, for example, certain garden features ‐ ‘out‐ door living space’ (formerly known as ‘a gar‐ den’), ‘outdoor fireplace’ (um, ‘barbecue’) or patio (sorry ‘terrace’) ‐ are as dated and naff as a Sony Walkman. Since when, and more importantly, why, did rooms and gardens become ‘spaces’?

Frankly, though, whether you call it a gar‐ den or an outdoor living space, it’s funda‐ mentally the same principle as inside your house ‐ design it based on what you like and how you plan to use it, rather than some glossy magazine ideal of how these spaces should look and function.

I know many people who’ve spent vast sums on renovations that basically make their place look like a mid‐priced hotel. Or spent a

What’s the point? So, if you have a fire pit and you have people over a lot in the evening, great investment. If it’s something

you’ve bought because that gets you entry in‐ to the middle class aspirational garden club, then there’s really no point. As for artificial grass, if you have kids and dogs and are time poor, it’s actually an excellent proposition.

So, in summary, homes are not about

keeping up with the Joneses, but making a space work for YOU. But why confine any list of ‘tackiest things’ to overpriced rubbish sold in shops smelling of incense and playing whale calls as back‐ ground music? Our anger would be better di‐ rected at virtue‐signalling corporations which produce propaganda claiming that by buying their products consumers are saving the plan‐ et from ecological disaster and promoting the physical and psychological well‐being of all mankind.

The best example I’ve come across was a company plaque with the subversive mes‐ sage: ‘You don’t have to be mad to work here but we have our diversity quota to fulfil.’

Nuff said. I rest my case, m’lud.

Views of a Grumpy Old Man SO that piece of lower than pond life Hancock has resigned. It shouldn’t have been up to him - Boris should have fired him instantly it was confirmed that the photo was genuine. Hancock has been totally taking the piss out of every single person in the UK, especially all the folks that wanted one last kiss with a loved one that was about to die, but his rules wouldn’t allow it. Yes his rules!

Once again a politician has proven that they are all just lying, cheating toe rags.

Please don’t tell me any more what I can’t do or that I might face a £10,000 fine if I break a quarantine rule or get arrested, until he is now arrested and fined.

Never mind the fact he employed this woman just to have his bit on the side on hand for their own reasons, nothing to do with his work as Health Secretary. And how about the arrogance of Johnson saying that Hancock had apologised and that was the end of it - was it heck!

I watch quite a lot of TV for no real reason except I actually quite enjoy it. But being an

OAP with various health problems I do find the advertising on daytime TV a bit depressing. Every other advert is about making arrangements for when I die so my loved ones don’t have to worry about the funeral. I've seen commercials where investors offer to purchase your home with a cash offer so you can avoid repossession.

There are lots of ads for cancer charities.

The assumption is that the daytime TV viewers are in financial turmoil, very sick or unemployed when, in fact, all I want to do is watch a bit of light-hearted TV. So how’s everyone enjoying Brexit? I was criticised a few times for only worrying how it affected me and how I should look at the bigger picture and my reply was I actually don’t give a toss about the bigger picture.

Import duty is putting up prices on products in the UK and sending a parcel to anyone in the UK now comes with the added delight of filling in a customs declaration.

And it’s stopped us travelling back and forth to the UK during the pandemic.

It’s affected trading shares on the UK stock exchange and Marks and Sparks have had problems getting fresh salad stuff in their stores.

Just all a nuisance rather than a benefit.

WITH the much awaited summer months come long, warm nights to be enjoyed sitting outside, maybe enjoying a drink and some tapas, but unfortunately, they also bring some less popular visitors: mosquitoes.

Itching and scratching Mosquitoes can be a huge problem, and although most people will only find their bites uncomfortably itchy, others can suffer more serious reactions.

Young children seem to be particularly tasty for them and without a good after-bite product, it can be hard to keep them from scratching, and with dirty fingernails, bites can become infected.

WHAT is the best thing for keeping mosquitoes away? in their elongated mouthpieces there are six needle-like pieces; two to break the skin, two to keep it apart, one to detect blood vessels and the other to extract the blood. Almost 10 per cent said that none of the above was effective.

Common mosquito The common mosquito, or culex pipiens, is the most com-

mon, measuring between four and 10 millimetres, it bites at night in the summer months. It can spread Nile Fever.

There was a plague last year around Sevilla which caused 19 cases of meningoencephalitis and sent at least seven people to the ICU. Tiger mosquito The tiger mosquito, or aedes albopictus, was first seen in Spain in 2004 and is mainly found on the east coast and Balearic islands. It has a distinctive white line and is between six and nine millimetres long. It also bites during the day, mainly around the

Egyptian mosquito The Egyptian mosquito, Aedes Aegypti is one of the most worrying because it can spread the most diseases. It is also striped and bites several times. Found in

Andalucia and Catalonia, mainly near water. They fly close to the ground and can’t be heard.

Japonese mosquito The Aedes Japonicus or Japonese mosquito is bigger than the others, light brown with gold coloured lines. It bites in the morning and at night and can also spread Nile Fever amongst other diseases. It prefers rural areas with plenty of vegetation.

There have been plagues reported in Andalucia and other parts of Spain.

Anopheles mosquito The Anopheles mosquito is one of the best known and can spread malaria, which is not considered to be a problem in Europe, but causes 600,000 deaths per year in the world, mainly in Africa. It is six millimetres long and bites at dusk and at night.

We challenge you to redis‐ cover your local high streets, markets, butchers, greengro‐ cers and all of the wonderfully quirky independent businesses in your area.

Now that the Covid‐19 pan‐ demic appears to be under control, it is a good idea to try and support many local busi‐ nesses by ordering online and making use of any click and collect services they can oper‐ ate, especially if you are unable to get out due to health rea‐ sons or any other restrictions.

The joy of shopping local means that independent busi‐ nesses can help support the lo‐ cal community.

Although it may be a euro or two cheaper elsewhere or on‐ line, consider where your mon‐ ey is actually going.

By shopping at an indepen‐ dent store you’re putting food on a local family’s table, and

there is no better time than now to give back to your com‐ munity by making a small ges‐ ture and shopping in this way.

Many local stores support local charities, support and sponsor local sports teams and in many cases the small inde‐ pendent stores are actually much more than just a small high street shop, they’re a family’s legacy, often passed down through numerous gen‐ erations and support not just the current owner but the gen‐ eration before. For those stores which are new, that ex‐ tra couple of euros spent there are supporting someone’s dream and ambition, and also the courage it took them to step out alone, which is no easy task. It takes quite a large chunk of money to set up an independent store and com‐ pete with the multinational and chains.

So be sure to pre‐order your meat from a local butcher and get your spuds from a local greengrocer, let us revive that community spirit and get to know our neighbours again.

You could also consider pur‐ chasing gift vouchers from lo‐ cal businesses to help them over the coming weeks, think‐ ing outside the box can often lead to some fantastic ideas.

Why not buy a meal for two, an hour’s tattoo time at a local studio, a hair cut at a local sa‐ lon or an online study course for someone looking to change their career path.

As people are struggling with finances thinking about what friends and family may

actually need is important too.

Whilst it’s nice to give a glam‐ ourous gift perhaps pre‐paying a family member’s phone bill for the month would actually be a better gift. Helping people alleviate stress and worry, give the gift of peace of mind through these difficult times.

Choosing to spend your money locally will really make a difference in the recovery of the local economy. When we buy local, our money stays lo‐ cal, and it strengthens the local economy in two ways. First, buying local keeps money circu‐ lating within the local economy.

Money circulating through the local economy benefits ev‐ eryone who is a part of each transaction. For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce.

First, they sell to a local restaurant, which in turn pre‐ pares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its local employ‐ ees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy sup‐ plies from a neighbourhood hardware store. This example illustrates how the recircula‐ tion of money in the local economy leads to a stronger fi‐ nancial foundation for our neighbours and communities.

Buying local also fuels new employment and job opportu‐ nities for people within our community.

Dinosaur fun

ALMOST all children have a fascination with dinosaurs with images from the Flintstones to Jurassic Park causing much hilarity and some sleepless nights.

With schools breaking up, if you are in the vicinity of Estepona between July 14 and August 29, there is a double dose of dinosaurs to excite and educate the young and not so young.

The touring exhibition Dino Expo had to remain dormant during the lockdown, but it is

back on the road and being set up at the Estepona Parque de los niños c/Eslovenia (close to the bullring) with entry costing €7 for children and €9 for adults.

It has been put together by a team of palaeontologists and in this collection, you can see more than 100 full-scale animatronic dinosaurs that aim to recreate the world of these giant animals, which roamed the Earth more than 65 million years ago.

Jonny also shares the tortures of travelling from the UK to Spain even having been vaccinated, making it even harder for those who still can afford the time to visit the Costa. However his up‐ side is the English holidaying at home: good for the Clothiers with their glamp‐ ing ‘Dome Garden’ in Gloucester being packed to the brim with bookings.

by Mark Slack IF you have looked at the price of most new cars you’ll have gathered they aren’t cheap, even small hatchbacks are not necessarily in the affordable bracket. However, value for money can be had from main‐ stream manufacturers if you are looking for a family car.

Citroen’s new C4 provided an enjoyable week’s motoring and with prices starting from a smidgen

The great value Citroen C4 over €24,498 (£21,000) it rep‐ resents incredibly good value for your motoring money.

There are petrol and diesel en‐ gines, manual or automatic gears and even full electric power.

Standard equipment across the board includes 18” wheels, LED lights, Apple Car

Play and Android Auto, Blue‐ tooth, height adjustable front seats, automatic dual zone air conditioning, rear parking sen‐ sors, auto lights and wipers and heated and powered door mirrors.

My test model was the mid‐ table Shine version with prices from a still very reasonable € 2 8 , 0 1 1 (£24,010),

bringing a significant ramp up in the standard equipment stakes. Petrol power for the range comes from a 1.2‐litre, three‐cylinder turbocharged unit in two power outputs, 129hp and 153hp. In my case the 129hp engine mated to a six‐speed manual gearbox.

The first thing that strikes you about the Citroen is re‐ finement, even under hard ac‐ celeration, when three‐cylin‐ ders generally sound like an over excited lawnmower, the Citroen is remarkably quiet.

It has a feeling of quality, not something that has always been a hallmark of Citroen’s past.

A nice slick gear change and well‐chosen ratios means the C4 bowls along with little ex‐ tra effort required from the driver, and it’s a comfortable place to be seated.

It’s no hot hatch and you certainly won’t want to be hustling it along twisty roads, even though the famously comfortable Citroen suspen‐ sion produces less body roll than you might imagine.

It’s a very modern looking car with swooping lines, espe‐

cially to the rear, but access and egress remains comfort‐ able and most who saw my test car loved the looks. This is a car aimed at the family in my view, and it does a great job of providing practical, well ‐ equipped transport at an af‐ fordable price.

As with sister manufacturer Peugeot the quality has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years, yet you do get a distinctly different car to any Peugeot stablemates.

I loved the C4, it has distinct echoes of Citroen’s quirky past but in a very useable, modern form in a great value package.

€1 coin to check tyres

WITH the hot summer months almost upon us in Spain, and after a long peri‐ od where vehicles have not been used so much ‐ if at all ‐ drivers should take care to check that the tyres on their vehicle are in good working order, before undertaking any journeys.

It should be normal any‐ way to check the tyres for any deficiencies or wear and tear, and also to ensure that they meet the minimum legal requirements for driving, both for your own safety, and to avoid any unnecessary fines, because in the event of the police stopping you and discovering that the tread on your vehicle’s tyres is less than 1.6 millimetres in depth, the resulting fine is €200 per tyre.

There are easy ways to check your tyres without the need to visit a garage or a mechanic, and the best‐ known check for the tyre tread depth is by using a one euro coin (in the UK, normal‐

However, if the gold edge of the coin does not fit into the groove then the depth is too shallow and the tyre

should be changed as soon as possible.

Of course, it is standard practice to always check the condition of your vehicle’s tyres, and even if the tread is intact, a tyre can still lose traction as it gets older, and most tyre manufacturers will recommend you change the

tyres a minimum of every five years.

If you look closely at the numbers engraved on the sides of the tyre, they will re‐ fer to the week and the date of manufacture, so it is easy for you to calculate how old they are, and whether they might need changing or not.

SPORT FRIDAY night (tomorrow) July 2 at the Retamar Sports Centre, Be‐ nalmadena (next to the Butterfly Park) the Walking Football Associ‐ ation of Iberia in collaboration with the Walking Football League host a walking football event to raise funds for local Benalmadena woman Della Hall, who is serious‐ ly ill with Motor Nueron Disease.

Appearing will be two of the Benalmadena Ladies teams who will be competing with Viñuela Ladies for the WFAI Cup. For the men Malaga WFC will take on a Seniors League Select team.

There will be live music and a party with a raffle and an auction for a Special Edition CHELSEA football jersey which commemer‐ ates their 2012 European Cup/FA Cup double.

A mention to Malaga WFC golf section who held their annual golf tournament last Saturday June 26 and which was won by Gray Salt’s team. The real winner though was Della’s Fund which is now €250 richer.

In football an interesting friend‐ ly took place on Wednesday June 30 at the Finca Naundrup be‐ tween old rivals Walking Dead and Malaga WFC. Result and de‐ tails next week.

Both won recent friendlies, Malaga doing a double at Viñuela

and Walking Dead a double at Nerja in two strongly contested games played in the true spirt of the game and WD having the edge on the home side.

It was WD’s first venture out‐ side their Calahonda quarters and they were suitably impressed with the Nerja set up and the ex‐ cellent meal at Finnegans after‐ wards in Nerja, courtesy of the host club.

Benahavis played a unique ‘friendly’ match recently in keep‐ ing with the current ‘Euro Nations Tournament’ when they used their session for a Scotland v Eng‐ land match. Unlike their seniors, these guys scored goals with the Scots coming out on top 7‐4 in a

keenly fought game. Top scorer with four goals was John Barclay for the Scots. England Captain Rob Fitzgerald scored his side’s fourth goal.

OTHER NEWS A possible change to the South of Spain Walking Football League could be on the cards with a sug‐ gestion from Nerja that there should be an A and B League, with the B League being for play‐ ers who can’t get into the A team, but want to play competitive football.

It is currently being discussed by all managers with a decision at the next League Management Committee meeting on July 6.

A Tee-riffic day for La Sala Golfers JUNE 19 saw the return of anoth‐ er action‐packed day of La Sala Golf at Alferini, Villa Padierna.

Notoriously famous for being a difficult course, the golfers arrived on time and were welcomed with breakfast and a selection of La Sala merchandise prior to the ear‐ ly shotgun start.

After a tough 18 holes, they re‐ turned to La Sala Puerto Banus for a complimentary taster of Premi‐ um Nero Vodka, followed by free‐ flowing beers, wine, and a deli‐ cious selection of La Sala signature light bites.

The prize giving and auction in aid of the local Elena Gaite Foun‐ dation, witnessed the auctioning of a four ball at El Parador with an impressive squad signed Liverpool Football shirt!

The day saw some incredibly im‐ pressive scores with third place In‐ dividual, Kevin Fearnely with 43 points, second place Individual Ben Mitchell with 44 points and the overall winner Jan Sigvard Runo with an impressive 46 points, and an eagle on stroke index one!

Third place team on the day was Guadalminos 2, with 88 points overall. The Pink Panthers

La Sala Golfers. came in with 90 points taking sec‐ ond place, and the overall winners on the day were The Mickeys with 94 points.

All prizes were supplied by Sala Golf sponsors, ONE Residences and Vinomarket as well as Inter‐ national Marbella who kept the golfers refreshed with G&Ts on the course, whilst keeping them entertained which was won by the Pink Panthers who were awarded with a round of cocktails later on at La Sala Puerto Banus!
