In praise of world tapas

MORE than 50 Almeria Province bars and restaurants are celebrat‐ ing World Tapas Day today, Thursday June 17.

Held on the third Thursday in June, this year’s edition continues in Almeria Province until Saturday July 3.

The initiative was recently presented by the Diputacion provin‐ cial council, the ASHAL association, which represents the province’s hospitality sector, Almeria City Hall and the La Caixa Foundation.

Maria Luisa Cruz, who heads the Diputacion’s Agro‐Foods Pro‐ motion department and was present at the launch, extolled the province’s products and hospitality industry. World Tapas Day hon‐ ours a gastronomical style that originated in Almeria and whose bars and restaurants are its foremost ambassadors, she pointed out.

“Tapas are 100 per cent a local product and thanks to Sabores Almeria they are made with Almeria Province ingredients,” Cruz said. ASHAL president Pedro Sanchez‐Fortun had words of praise for official institutions.

“This year has been more special than ever owing to the difficul‐ ties we are experiencing,” he said in reference to the pandemic.

“But this year’s World Tapas Day is full of surprises, with draws and presents.”

Sanchez‐Fortun also reminded Almerienses that they would find a list of participating bars and restaurants on the www.diamundi aldelatapa.es website.

Efforts rewarded for beaches VICENTE GARCÍA EGEA, the Junta’s Tourism del‐ egate to Almeria, travelled recently to Mojacar to officially present the town’s six Blue Flags.

Handing over the flags, García Egea congratu‐ lated the town hall team and Mojacar’s mayor, Rose Maria Cano, explaining to all present that the regional Tourism department, headed by Juan Marin, attached huge importance to Alme‐

ria’s quality tourist destinations.

Rosa María Cano in turn thanked the dele‐ gate and expressed satisfaction at receiving the flags.

“These reflect our efforts to have clean and well looked‐after beaches, ready to receive ev‐ eryone who comes to visit us with the assur‐ ance that they will find the best services.”

A horrifying panorama A MINUTE’S silence, condemning gender violence, was observed outside the Almeria headquarters of the Andalucia Institute for Women (IAM).

As well as Maria Montagud, IAM’s director in Almeria, the silent protest was attended by Rafael Pasamontes ‐ the Junta’s delegate for Equality, Social Policies and Conciliation ‐ and Mercedes Gimenez, the IAM’s service chief.

Between them, they displayed a banner declaring, ‘Andalucia against sexist violence.’

Speaking after the minute’s silence, Montagud censured the re‐ peated cases of gender violence. “The current panorama is horrify‐ ing,” she lamented.

“This is the fourth consecutive week that we have come out to condemn gender violence, weeks that have taken the lives of 11 women and a child of seven,” Montagud declared.

She also referred to other situations, like the investigation of the sexist killing of a 17‐year‐old in Sevilla whose body was found follow‐ ing a statement from her aggressor.

Inevitably, the IAM director referred to the discovery at sea in Tenerife of the body of six‐year‐old Olivia who, together with her sis‐ ter Anna, aged one, disappeared with their father at the end of April.

“That mother has been waiting for 40 days for her daughters and now she has had this terrible outcome,” Montagud said.

Algarrobo watercourse tamed WORK concluded on infrastructure that will prevent the Ram‐ bla del Algarrobo watercourse in Vera from flooding in future.

This has been carried out in two phases and began three years ago by directing the stream underground at Salar de los Canos while still leaving sufficient water for the area’s wet‐ lands.

The second phase involved a 1,824‐metre open channel ending at the sea in a project that also incorporates the Paseo Maritimo promenade.

“Enclosing the Rambla and directing it to the sea was neces‐ sary to prevent the frequent floods that occur in the area when the stream overflows during periods of torrential rain,” ex‐ plained Vera’s Infrastructure councillor Alfonso Garcia.

The project is included in the Plan Especial de la Costa and the €2.55 million cost has been financed via the urban develop‐ ment fees paid by the owners of land affected by the Special Plan affecting the coast.

ALMERIA again hosts Titan Desert event THE Tabernas Desert will host the prestigious MBT Mountain Bike Titan Desert event in December.

With a setting of sand, trails, and mountains, it makes the perfect location to test some of the world’s top mountain bike riders.

This event, the world’s number one mountain bik‐ ing event, was forcibly switched from Morocco to Almeria last year due to the pandemic.

The organisers decided that the Tabernas desert is once again the ideal location for its four‐stage 400km challenge, which will pass through 10 of Almeria’s mu‐ nicipalities en route to the sea.

One of this year’s first en‐ trants is Joaquim Purito Ro‐ driguez, the former profes‐ sional rider who previously achieved podium finishes in the Tour, Giro, and La Vuelta.

“Last year it had a direct economic impact of €2.5 million on the province, and helped promote the interna‐ tional vision of the Costa de Almeria, reached 190 coun‐ tries,” commented Javier A García, president of Alme‐ ria’s provincial council.

JAB FOR JUSTIN

MY name is Justin Boland, son of Maurice and Wendy, I grew up on the Costa Del Sol, in the Marbella area from when I was six years old. I’m now 45 (this week was my birthday - 13/06).

I am a father of two boys, I work as Sales Director for world famous Engel and Völkers, and Covid-19 just tried to kill me!

Generally, I live a healthy lifestyle, I don’t smoke, I don’t really drink, I play sports at least three times a week and pride myself on staying fit. I don’t have any underlying conditions!

On Tuesday May 18 I’d had my typical session of paddle tennis. I have to admit I was feeling a little bit unusual, not very energetic and extremely hungry, which was not typical for me.

By the time I got home my energy level had dropped and I put it down to just being hungry. I had my dinner and went to lie down when I suddenly started shaking.

My fever went right up. I took paracetamol and went to bed.

The next morning I woke up feeling great. No temperature, but by about 4pm I started to feel unwell again and my fever picked up. I decided to get a rapid Covid test, which came back negative.

By May 25, I couldn’t resist any more and went to Hospiten in Estepona and to my shock, I received a call - I had Covid-19.

Because I had already been sick a few days they recommended that I go to the ward and let the doctor inspect me properly. I stayed in the hospital a couple of days, during which I started to feel much worse.

On May 28, the doctor recommended that I go to Santa Elena hospital in Malaga as they had the best treatment for Covid.

On my arrival to Santa Elena,I was immediately put into ICU. I was hooked up to machines and put on oxygen. I was terrified at this point. The doctors had warned me if the oxygen was not sufficient to deal with the virus that was attacking my lungs they might have to induce a coma and put me on a mechanical ventilator!

HOSPITALISED: I will be grateful for the rest of my life to the ICU team.

HEALTHY: I play sports at least three times a week and pride myself on staying fit.

It was then the realisation struck home and I began to worry, will I die whilst in a coma?

On May 30, they decided to put me into a temporary coma in order to save my life.

Being young and as I said before healthy, it took nine days altogether when my body started to respond and decided it was time to come out.

I remember waking up, I had no idea what had happened. I had no idea why I was even under sedation (it took a while to come back to me) it was really odd. But what was really distressing and this is something quite normal, is for the time I was under, I had lost the ability to be able to physically walk, use my hands and my general condition was one of a very frail old man. Now understanding the fact that recovery will take a little while of course I understand

things better.

I wanted to share my story because so many people out there think it would never happen to them. Well that’s just simply wrong and I’m proof of that. I am giving a real warning to people out there.

Get Vaccinated!

Unfortunately I was not in the age category to be vaccinated at that point. But I can promise you one thing if I had been none of this would’ve happened.

Just imagine the person, simply by touching me they actually nearly killed me. You have the obligation as a human to help protect your fellow humans.

I will be grateful for the rest of my life to the ICU team and I

for one am for ever thankful to be given a second chance in life.

The English-speaking nurses work round the clock, they are diligent, humane and altogether amazing. Without their love and care I don’t know how I would’ve got through the most difficult 14 days of my life.

Thank you so much, all of you!

I of course want to also thank the Doctor who made that very difficult decision to save my life and for that I will never forget.

Thank you Dr Elias Ceravola, you’re an amazing man and I will never forget you. You saved my life!

Something really important to note. Even though the hospital has some of the most incredible emergency equipment, some of the more basic day-today things are missing as they are slowly investing in the hospital, for example some new wardrobes.

The reassurance is so helpful but without the simple basics it makes their jobs quite difficult.

Their focus should be solely on your health, so I think by getting the wardrobes, this is a small gesture where we will be helping them!

Any donation will be greatly received, €5, €10, €20 whatever works for you. Even if we can get five wardrobes, that’s better than nothing!

Turre centre for PAWSPATASA THINGS happen for PAWS‐PATAS when funds allow, explained commit‐ tee member and acting vice‐president Chrissie Cremore.

The PAWS‐PATAS ani‐ mal shelter, founded 32 years ago, receives no statutory funding and ex‐ ists solely on donations.

“Opening our new out‐ let and information cen‐ tre in Turre was in the pipeline for a long time and we are thrilled that this finally came to fruition,” Chrissie said.

Located in Avenida de Almeria 37, the centre is open from Monday to Saturday between 10.30am and 1.30pm.

Veteran volunteer Janet Franklin has wit‐ nessed major changes during her decades with the charity, holding a vari‐ ety of positions on the committee. She is excited, she enthused, at the prospect of dealing with the public and helping with their questions and concerns.

Having a base for PAWS‐PATAS’ trap, neuter and return (TNR) feral cat campaign is an‐ other important break‐ through, especially for Babs Williams, another long‐term committee member.

Babs, who works close‐ ly with the director of WVS (World Veterinary Service) in the UK, is liais‐ ing with many of the area’s cat‐colony feeders in the hope of preventing so many kittens from be‐ ing born into starvation, disease and a painful death.

“Being able to help and educate people is a giant step for PAWS‐PATAS” Babs declared.

Breeze raises funds for Caritas

BREEZE 97.7FM’S Big Bash helped to raise a whopping €2,013.24 for the station’s adopted local charity, Caritas Albox.

For many, this was their first post-lockdown event and the afternoon was marked by good humour, laughter and a sense of a community enjoying the sunshine and each other’s company.

Breeze presenters crossed between the Breeze studio and Chapmans Bar and Grill, who were hosting the event, maintaining a live special Big Bash broadcast while compering the event at Chapmans.

Local licensing laws did not permit live music, but there were plenty of activities to keep everyone occupied, including quizzes, stalls, games and an auction.which raised more than €600.

Eight-year-old Mini Breezer Geezer, Marshall, who has special educational needs, practised his writing in the run-up to the event, so that he could sign autographs and sell badges in exchange for donations on the day. He raised an impressive €125.65.

Almanzora Group of Friends, who were partners in the project, raised a further €500 with a huge tombola, Play Your Cards Right games and other donations.

“I want to thank the Breeze team for organising such a successful event,” said Francine Carter, a member of Albox Town Council and the Almanzora Group of Friends.

Gregorio, who heads Caritas Albox, explained that as well as the need for a food bank there were many other needs in the community.

“There is no better feeling than seeing someone happy who was in despair,” he declared.

“We will help anyone, regardless of their nationality, beliefs or orientation. If we can’t solve things ourselves, we will assist you in finding the help that you need.”

Breeze collects non-perishable foodstuffs for the Caritas food bank and donations can be left at the Breeze studio in Albox or Bar El Puente in Albanchez, who will be hosting a Ladies’ Day event on June 26 in partnership with Breeze to raise further funds for Caritas.

We asked, you answered: All lives matter THE whole world was gripped on Sunday by the image of Danish football star Christian Erik‐ sen lying on the pitch fighting for life. We asked, if players are dropping on one knee be‐ fore any more matches it proves that ALL LIVES MATTER! Approximately 80 per cent of our readers who commented or reacted to our Facebook post on Sunday agreed with the statement that All Lives Matter.

One reader commented “singling out one race from another is racism in itself. No colour race or creed is above another. All lives matter not just black ones. It is causing the racialism and segregation of humans. So yes, it is a per‐ fect statement.”

Meanwhile, another reader posted a mes‐ sage from the FA to England supporters, in it could be read “as the team has reiterated many times, they will collectively take the knee ahead of their fixtures during the tourna‐ ment. They are doing this as a mechanism of peacefully protesting against discrimination, injustice and inequality. This is personally im‐ portant to the players and the values the team collectively represents. This gesture of unity and fighting against inequality can be traced back as far as the 18th century. It is not new and English football has made it very clear that it does not view this as being aligned to a polit‐ ical organisation or ideology.”

Vaccinations In Shanty town THE vaccinations in the shanty towns in Nijar, are progressing well and it is expected that by the time this week’s campaign com‐ pletes even more people will have been vaccinated against the potentially deadly coronavirus.

The vaccination campaign has been coordinated by several NGOs and the health districts of Almeria and Poniente. The aim is to vaccinate people that are living in shanty towns and degraded ar‐ eas of Almeria against the poten‐ tially deadly virus. By Wednesday June 9, already nearly 1,400 peo‐ ple had been vaccinated through‐ out villages in the Nijar region.

The campaign has been carried out jointly by Cepaim, the Red Cross, Hermanas Mercenarias, Almería Acoge and Médicos del Mundo. The campaign also in‐ cludes the support of a unit of the Andalucian Health Service.

Time to ditch the masks

WE asked, you answered: our readers will not be wearing masks once it is no longer mandatory.

Based on our Facebook sur‐ vey, more than 70 per cent of our readers will not be wearing masks once it is no longer mandatory, or at least not when they are outside, though most agreed that they will continue to do so in shops, banks, public transport, health centres, public buildings and other crowded

spaces. Many said that common sense should be used to decide when a mask does or doesn’t need to be worn.

The director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Si‐ mon, said that he believes that before July it may not be manda‐ tory to wear masks in Spain.

We asked you if you would continue to wear a mask even if this is the case.

Despite the resounding no, those who do plan to continue wearing a mask will do so until they are convinced that there is no chance of catching the virus.

One reader, who said that she would continue to wear hers, fears that with new variants coming into Spain, it’s too soon to even consider ditch‐ ing the masks.

Another said that most of the masks that peo‐ ple use are not ef‐ fective any‐ way because FACE MASKS: May not be mandatory. they won’t

prevent inhalation or exhalation of a virus which spreads in tiny droplets.

Vaccine update

THE Spanish Ministry of Health issued an update on June 12, saying that according to the latest data, the pandemic is expected to continue to decline thanks to the high rate of vaccinations the country has managed to complete.

A spokesman for the ministry announced that the next age group to focus on will be the 40 to 49-year-olds, he also added that most communities have now relaxed restrictions and there is a gradual return to normality.

The Ministry of Defence has said it will issue the so-called ‘Covid passport’, the certificate that will allow European citizens to move through the EU without further controls to prove they are vaccinated or have passed a PCR or a negative antigen test.

Sevilla University on Top WORLD CLASS: An improvement on last year’s position.

Ryanair bring Italians RYANAIR, Italy’s number one airline, has announced the addition of three based aircraft, six new routes and over 65 flights every week from Rome Fiumicino to a host of domestic and international destinations including Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga. This represents a further investment of €246 million, which will deliver increased connectivity to the region, playing a key role in the recovery of jobs and the local economy.

“Ryanair remains committed to delivering connectivity to Rome and expects its Summer 2021 schedule, including 78 routes from both Rome airports in total and over 470 departing flights per week, will help boost air traffic in the city and the region, contributing to the recovery of the tourism industry as vaccination programmes continue and Europe reopens in time for the peak holiday season,” the company said on Tuesday June 8.

THE latest edition of the QS World University Ranking for 2022, puts the University of Sevilla in the top 42 per cent worldwide, improving more than six points on last year’s position, and showing a climb of 30 positions on the previous edition, to stand in the bracket of numbers 551-560 of the best universities in the world.

With respect to academic reputation, University of Sevilla shows it continues to climb positions up to 237, improving 22 positions.

It is also worth noting the rise of 60 positions to 548 in the list for international students in the US. This data, together with the increase in the position of US Scientific Publications cited by researchers, shows a recognition of the University of Sevilla at an international level.

The QS World University Rankings assesses universities using six indicators that assess the impact of research, the quality of teaching, internationalisation, the global academic reputation, and the reputation of the contracting companies of their students.

Sierra Nevada Cycling Event CYCLISTS and cycling fans should get set for the stunning Sierra Nevada cycling event, the Cycle Tour of the Veleta.

The 2021 edition is so popular that all 300 places have sold out. Places this year have been limited in a bid to ensure that the event is coronavirus safe.

The Cycle Tour of the Veleta returns to Granada after its absence due to the pandemic.

The event will hold its 27th edition on Sunday, June 27.

The 300 cyclists limit was put in place to ensure the safe development of the sporting event.

The Sierra Nevada summer sports calendar opens with the Cicloturista al Veleta and the Sierra Nevada Límite. Other events of the summer calendar include July’s Vertical K ilometre event, and the International Ascent of Pico Veleta, to be held in August.

This exhibition, made up of pieces by artists including Délacroix, Chasseriau, Gérôme, Constant, Bernard, and Matisse, can be visited from June 11 to September 10 and includes paintings from different museums and collections, as well as utensils, ornaments and various items of the Alhambra Museum.

Hartlepool Monkey

R E P O R T S that have appeared in the UK press concerning perceived problems with the Hartlepool Monkey have been dismissed.

The story developed when it was announced that the Hartlepool Council was considering adding an explanatory plaque to the monkey statue as it may offend some visitors by having possible racist connections.

In fact, the story goes that during the Napoleonic Wars, a French ship was wrecked off the coast of an old fishing village on the north-east coast of England and the only survivor was a monkey that managed to get to shore.

Those living in Hartlepool had never seen a monkey or a F renchman and as they couldn’t understand what it was saying, they assumed it was a F rench spy and hanged it.

There is no real documentation to prove this, but it

Gordon Brown Won’t Give Up GORDON BROWN is still pushing for the UK to join the EU and said that he will not give up, stressing that this is his personal view and accepts that it is unlikely in the short term.

Although the former prime minster was a strong remain sup‐ porter before the referendum in 2016, this is the first time he has explicitly called for the UK to return to the EU. “I want to rejoin the European Union,” Brown said. “I’ll not give up. I didn’t support joining the euro because I didn’t think it would work for Britain, it wasn’t because I objected to a single currency.

“I’m not some mad integrationist that in all situations will say, integrate, integrate, integrate. But I do think our future is still Eu‐ ropean, and I do think that myself. But I recognise that’s not what’s going to happen in the very short term, and I also recog‐ nise that we’ve also got to find a better way of expressing global Britain, to persuade people of the need for international coopera‐ tion. “I’m only saying it as a personal view. I still regret leaving the European Union, and I still see a long‐term future as part of Eu‐ rope. And that’s all I need to say. That’s my contribution to the de‐ bate. I’m not there to decide Labour’s policy at the next election,”

THE Ministry of Health reported on Thursday June 10, after updating its report on vaccination activity in Spain, that 25.1 per cent of the population is already fully vaccinated against Covid‐19. This figure shows that 11,893,951 citizens are already fully immunised.

According to the report, a total of 31,628,321 vac‐ cines have been administered, 624,261 alone since June 9, which represents a new record of doses inject‐

ed in one day. In addition, 43.5 per cent of the popula‐ tion has at least one dose, which represents a total of 20,628,061 people.

According to these latest health data, the number of doses delivered in Spain amounts to 34,715,980, of which 31,628,321 have already been administered, which implies that 91.1 per cent of the total doses re‐ ceived have been administered.

MBE to Sue WILSON,‘For ser‐ vices to British Nationals in Spain and the European Union’ As Chair of Bremain in Spain, Sue is one of the most visible campaigners for the rights of UK nationals in the EU. When moving to Spain to retire over 10 years ago, she had no experience of advoca‐ cy, campaigning work or speaking in public. However, the result of the 2016 EU referendum affected her deeply and since then she has worked on the issue of UK nationals’ rights in various different ways. Sue has lobbied UK and EU influencers and made great efforts to inform the UK Gov‐ ernment’s work on citizens’ rights, including appearing in front of the Select Committee for Exiting the EU. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Sue has worked with great de‐ termination to raise the profile of citizens’ rights amongst politicians and key influencers. Her remarkable contribution and collaborative approach has helped the UK Government minimise preventable consular cases by ensuring UK na‐ tionals in the EU are reflected in the negotiations and that they have a clear understanding of their rights and how to access them. Her work has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of UK nationals.”

She has championed key issues, supported UK nationals to ac‐ cess services, lobbied the Spanish local authorities for improvements, and support‐ ed the Embassy and Consulates to disseminate accurate information.

Moving from Belgium to Spain shortly afterwards, she continued her lobbying, engagement and awareness‐raising efforts, considering the impact of the UK’s departure from the EU on both UK Nationals in Europe and EU Nationals in the UK. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Debbie’s voluntary contribution has been outstanding ‐ going beyond lobbying to provide a voice to citizens and to raise awareness of the im‐ pact the UK’s exit from the EU has had on the daily lives of individuals on both a practical and emotional level.

Through Brexpats Hear Our Voice, Debbie has created a platform that ensures the voice of everyone who is af‐ fected by the EU referendum is heard, regardless of their nationality.”

Unexpected Virus Replacing Covid AN unexpected virus is replacing Covid in Spain among children, and paediatricians have issued a warning.

According to the latest report issued by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, children up to four years of age are the ones being hit by the most respiratory infections. In fact, according to the report there are a staggering 179.6 cases per 100,000, and this number is growing.

Emergency rooms, paediatric wards and ICUs are said to be full of children who are suffering from RSV bronchiolitis, something that would only normally be expected in December.

As winter ended paediatricians breathed a sigh of relief as it appeared that with preventive measures the ongoing coronavirus pandemic was slowing down. This also seemed to limit the number of other common infections suffered by children.

David Andino, an emergency paediatrician at Madrid’s Niño Jesús Hospital took to Twitter to issue a warning and commented that: “Outside the hospital a suffocating summer heat. Inside the hospital the emergency, paedi-

€1 million eye spy

vAN operation named ‘The Telephone Operator’, by Organised Crime and Anti-Drug Team (EDOA) of the Sevilla Guardia Civil, supported by the Coordination Agency against Drug Trafficking (OCON Sur) and the Regional Centre for Analysis and Intelligence against Drug Trafficking (Crain) have arrested 15 people, finding six high-end vehicles and €1 million in cash.

The Espia2 store located on Calle Recaredo is one of the 21 stores that the Guardia Civil carried out searches on during the morning of Wednesday, June 9, in many places and homes in the provinces of Sevilla, Malaga, Cadiz and Madrid.

Pensioners trips set to Return NOW that the majority of elderly and pensioners in Spain have received their vaccinations, the government has decided the time is right to start the Imserso trips once again, that everybody of this age group has enjoyed so much previously.

EU Parliament Approves Certificate

THE EU parliament has backed a proposal allowing for digital proof of Covid vaccinations or negative tests. The measures are aimed at enabling restric‐ tion‐free travel within the EU as the summer tourism season be‐ gins.

travel industry and prime tourist sites from another disas‐ trous holiday season. Key travel European destinations like Spain and Greece have led the drive to have the certificate, which will have both paper and digital forms, rapidly intro‐ duced.

Another cyber attack THE Ministry of Labour and Social Economy in Madrid was hit by a cyber‐attack last week.

The Ministry tweeted at 11.27am on June 9, “The Ministry of Labour and Social Economy has been affected by a computer at‐ tack. The technical managers of the Ministry and the National Cryptological Centre are working together to determine the origin and restore normality as soon as possible.”

In March 2020, the Ministry was hit by a cyber‐attack which se‐ riously impacted the Spanish State Employment Service (SEPE).

SEPE was forced to suspend its communications systems across hundreds of offices and postpone thousands of appointments.

Its website was also inaccessible for about two weeks and the ransomware attack delayed thousands of ERTE applications, cer‐ tificates and applications for other benefits just as Spain’s strict Covid‐19 lockdown took hold.

Government Wants Electricity Brought Down THE government has said it will request the National Commis‐ sion of Markets and Competition ( CNMC ) to change the so‐ called ‘off‐peak hour’of the price of electricity.

The Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, is committed to ad‐ vancing the off‐peak hour at night of the current electricity rate by hourly sections to 10pm from Monday to Friday, instead of starting at midnight as is the case with the new rate tariff struc‐ ture that came into effect recently.

Belarra pointed out that ‘United, we can request this change,’ which is proposed by Facua, the consumer rights association, and sent to the National Commission of Markets and Competi‐ tion (CNMC) to evaluate its viability.

Spanish Consumer Association OCU and Facua have criticised the new electricity tariffs, which require consumers to use the early morning hours in order to take advantage of the cheapest rate.

Many people would be sur‐ prised to know that in Spain one in three children is at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

Sadly, according to experts, Spain is facing a crisis in child poverty with nearly 2.5 million youngsters being affected.

What is even worse though is that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has made these fig‐ ures worse, and it is expected that in 2021 these figures will increase dramatically.

THE Spanish Postal Service has managed to win two top awards at the World Post & Par‐ cel Awards 2021, specifically in the category of Corporate Social Responsibility for its initiative ‘Help as much as we can’ and in the Postal e‐commerce for its platform Correos Market.

The World Post & Parcel Awards are considered as the Oscars of the postal world and logistics sector and recognise ex‐ cellence, leadership and the most outstanding proposals made by postal and logistics companies during the previous year. The winners met at a virtu‐ al gala held on Tuesday, June 8, due to pandemic restrictions.

The initiative ‘Help as much as we can’ encompasses all the ini‐ tiatives promoted by Correos during the toughest period of the Covid‐19 pandemic.

Demonstrating its vocation of public service, Correos put itself at the service of society, beyond the development of their usual activity, to get everything neces‐ sary to citizens, the most vulner‐ able groups and professionals who were performing essential tasks at the most critical mo‐ ments.

Spanish Family Rescued In Dubai POLICE in Dubai have rescued a Spanish family after their yacht broke down at sea near a rock breaker off Jumeirah coast.

The yacht is said to have broken down due to a technical issue, however, the police’s maritime rescue patrols in Dubai quickly responded to stop them from colliding into a rock breaker in strong currents and high winds.

The Director of Ports Police Station, Colonel Dr Hassan Suhail Al Suwaidi, said the Command-and-Control Centre re-

ceived the family’s distress call when their yacht broke down. “The Station, which has nine marine points in Dubai, immediately responded to the call and handled the situation with extreme finesse and professionalism,” he confirmed.

He said the quick response of the rescue teams helped to save their lives as high winds and strong currents would have caused the vessel to crash into the breaker. Six family members were aboard the yacht, including children.

Costly Fail To Self-Isolate A costly trip to Spain.

A D E R BY S H I R E mum has been forced to hand over more than £2,000 after she disregarded the requirement to self‐isolate after she made a trip to Spain, and drove 160 miles to Norfolk.

IN a fantastic save, officers from the Guardia Civil have been able to save a 16-month-old baby from drowning in a removable pool in Sevilla.

The accident took place on June 6 and the Guardia Civil were alerted by the coordination centre to the fact that a youngster had possibly drowned. They rushed to the scene of the incident and located the child’s father who was performing CPR. The Guardia Civil officers took charge of the baby and continued to perform CPR manoeuvres. Luckily the child started to breathe slightly.

Medical services also set out to help and as soon as they arrived on the scene they took charge. They quickly rushed the baby to Sevilla Children’s Hospital.

The child’s relatives have expressed their thanks to the Guardia Civil for their excellent work.

P James, aged 50 from Buxton, had left home whilst she was required to be self‐ isolating and has now been made to pay over double the initial fine as she decided to drive her mother‐in‐law all the way to Norfolk.

Ms James had only been fined £1,000 to start with but she refused to pay and even told police that she would not pay it.

Due to her lack of pay‐ ment her case finally made it before a Derby magistrate, as she had failed to pay or indicate a plea.

The case was dealt with quickly and behind closed doors using the Single Jus‐ tice Procedure, which is usu‐ ally reserved for TV licence fines and driving matters.

The hearing at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court took place on March 18, but details have only just been released. At the hear‐ ing Magistrate Paul Dicker‐ son found Miss James guilty and she has had to pay over £2,000.

Pub is not off limits

AFTER a judge’s ruling in the UK, a man is now in line for compensation after his former company gave him the sack when he was spotted down the pub for a drink while being off sick.

Colin Kane, aged 66, has a serious lung condition which is a result of him being a smoker.

He had been a driver for Deb‐ mat Surfacing in Newcastle since 2012 and in March 2020 he called in sick.

Later that day though he was spotted by a colleague out and about drinking alcohol and smoking at a social club local to his workplace. Colin soon re‐ ceived a call from his bosses but he claimed that ‘he had been in bed all day with his chest.’

This was the beginning of the end and he was soon called into a meeting with his manag‐ er who commented that: “Surely if you had been unfit for work and on antibiotics, you shouldn’t be in the pub.”

Colin admitted that he had nipped to the pub, but believed that he had done nothing

wrong as he had not been there for very long. Disciplinary action was started in July 2020, and the driver was sacked for being dishonest and breaching the company’s rules, however, Judge Andrea Pitt found that Colin had been unfairly dis‐ missed as the rules of the com‐ pany did not explicitly state that workers, when they are off sick, cannot socialise.

She commented on the mat‐ ter and said: “There is nothing in the disciplinary procedure prohibiting an employee from acting in this way. “[Debmat Surfacing] made a gross assumption, without evi‐ dence, that the claimant

should not be at the social club because of the nature of his condition.”

She also found that the com‐ pany made an error in their in‐ vestigation as they had incor‐ rectly recorded the day on which Colin had phoned in.

She went on to comment that: “There is no rule [Deb‐ mat] can point to, which says that an employee cannot so‐ cialise in whatever way they deem appropriate whilst ab‐ sent from work through ill‐ ness.”

In order to decide the sum of compensation that Colin will receive, another hearing will take place.

Primark Signs Sustainable Textiles Plan THE popular retailer has become a founding signatory of Tex‐ tiles 2030, the UK Sustainable Textile Action Plan launched by WRAP. Over the next decade, this initiative aims to accelerate the fashion and textiles industry’s move towards circularity and signif‐ icantly reduce the environmental impact of clothing and home fabrics through practical interventions along the textiles chain.

“By signing up to Textiles 2030, Primark is not only committing to taking significant action in relation to its own operations, in‐ cluding by encouraging its customers to use and dispose of cloth‐ ing and textile products in new, more sustainable ways, but also collaborating with other signatories through cross‐industry dis‐ cussions to accelerate progress towards a circular economy for textiles and reverse the growing carbon impact of textile prod‐ ucts,” the company said.

Alongside other signatories, Primark will set targets for reduc‐ ing whole life emissions, measure the impact of its product port‐ folio, and act on priorities, reporting progress to WRAP annually.

This includes reducing the aggregate greenhouse gas footprint of new products by 50 per cent, sufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C in line with the Paris Agreement on climate change and achieving Net Zero by 2050 at the latest.

Barcelo Opts For Renewable Energy BARCELO HOTEL GROUP and Endesa have extended their collaboration agreement to supply 100 per cent renewable electricity to all the chain’s hotels in Spain. In 2020, the electricity company supplied energy with a guarantee of renewable origin to the 18 establishments of the Occidental Hotels brand of Barcelo Hotel Group and this year the agreement extends to the electricity consumption contract of the 66 hotels of the hotel chain in Spain.

Approximately 107 GWh of annual consumption at Barcelo Hotel Group facilities in Spain, that is equivalent to the consumption of more than 30,600 homes, will be covered with 100 per cent renewable origin guarantee certificates issued by the National Commission of Markets and Competition.

All the women have beaten cancer and have signed up for the stunning Pelayo Vida Challenge.

Each year the challenge changes and in 2021 they wel‐ come in the ‘Pelayo Vida 66 North Challenge.’ The challenge has been named in reference to the 66th Parallel North, the fa‐ mous Arctic Circle. The stunning challenge is expected to take be‐ tween 15 and 20 days.

Duty Free Returns to Tunnel

IN what has been termed a Eurotunnel U-turn, the French bureaucracy is defeated as the government has announced that the sale of duty free products is set to return to the Coquelles terminal of the Eurotunnel.

Authorisation has been given for zones to reopen at the Calais

and Dunkirk ports.

The decision is sure to delight many people and Olivier Dussopt, the Minister of Public Accounts and the Secretary of State for European Affairs Clément Beaune commented in a statement that: “This decision taken within the framework of a con-

structive dialogue with the European authorities (...) will make it possible to align the rules applicable to the Eurotunnel with those provided for in airports and seaports for journeys to a third country to the European Union.”

There are a few technical hoops to jump through first though and the reopening of the duty free zones is set to be added as an amendment to the Finance Bill. Ministers have confirmed that this bill is being looked at by the National Assembly already.

It has also been commented that it: “will not extend to rail transport, which will remain excluded from the scope of dutyfree, in accordance with European rules.”

Electricity Fraud Inspectors

IT has been announced that Endesa electricity fraud inspectors will track you down if you try to fiddle your electricity supply.

Juan de Dios Cerrato is a Cordovan man who is about to retire. He started working for the Spanish electricity supply company Endesa at the age of 19, becoming their youngest inspector, and he has devoted his entire 39 years of working life, to detecting electricity fraud.

He says there has always been fraud, which he has been detecting since 1985, originally in the old sheet metal meters, where cheats made a tiny hole from which they made the disk that measured consumption stop, and now in remote-managed digital electricity meters.

THERE have been rum‐ blings of discontent from Europe concerning clever accounting by mainly US companies such as Ama‐ zon and Google.

France, Spain and the UK either set or intended to in‐ troduce special tax laws which saw a decision by the US to retaliate with the imposition of huge tariff in‐ creases on certain goods.

Now at a meeting in the UK, G7 Finance Ministers agreed an in‐principle deal

to tax international com‐ panies on profits relating to in country sales.

Currently a company can earn huge amounts of money in one country but pay very little tax there because they could set up their headquarters in an‐ other country and channel profits into there and pay lower rates of tax.

Harvesting plastic soup CREATED 18 months ago, Gravity Wave is a Spanish company dedicated to the col‐ lection of plastic from the seabed and transforming it in‐ to useful objects.

The brother and sister team have teamed up with Enaleia, a foundation that works with traditional fishermen from the Mediterranean Sea who rather than throwing back plastic caught in their nets, sends it to Gravity Wave for transformation.

They started small and used the reformed plastic to make cases for mobile phones, but are now branching out as their contact with more than 100 fishermen means that they have so far received some 70,000 kilos of plastic.

Curbing youth unemployment

LATEST PLANS: Minister Yolanda Díaz made the announcement on June 8.

IN a video speech on Tuesday June 8, Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz announced the latest plans to curb youth unem‐ ployment in Spain.

With unemployment amongst those aged under 25 fast approaching 40 per cent, the largest number of unem‐ ployed in that age group in the European Union, the gov‐ ernment has published an 85 page document pledging €4.9 billion to tackle the problem over the next six years.

According to Díaz, this is the largest amount ever com‐ mitted to reduce youth em‐ ployment but it must be re‐ membered, that when the PSOE took over the govern‐ ment, it made a €2 billion commitment to reduce youth unemployment in 2018.

Rather than bring it down, the opposite was the result although in fairness, they couldn’t have forecast the ef‐ fects of the pandemic which

did see far more job losses than could ever have been predicted.

In her speech, the minister observed “Knowing that we are facing an enormous chal‐ lenge, the strategy moves in relation to the recommenda‐ tions of the European Union,” who confirmed that the con‐ cept has been created follow‐ ing discussions with the 17 autonomous communities as well as unions and employers.

Much of what is planned is dependent upon the creation of new technology businesses and the training of staff to work in them, many of whom will almost by definition be young, but this new industry does need to be funded and to date, Spain has still not re‐ ceived any money from the EU Recovery Programme.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT TWO of Leapy’s predictions came to pass this week. When originally columned they were of course met with the predictable accusations of racism from those who exploit the term for anything they don’t agree with!

One forecast, which I made almost a year ago, stated that as soon as the fans were allowed back into the football grounds they would let the players and officials know exactly what they thought of their knee taking, racist provoking homage to a Marxist organisation and criminal thug. Well.

You only have to tune in to see how the truth of that statement has come to pass. In a blatant attempt to instigate the mass suppression of free speech the FA has issued a statement actually directing the fans not to boo the players. They also added that they could issue bans on those who ignore the warning. At their peril I would say!

It’s not totally the fault of the teams of course. Referring to the topic in an interview Gary Neville, the England team manager, righteously spouted

that his players would ‘continue to take the knee against any form of racism in the game.’ This well‐ meaning, but utterly naïve comment from the man in charge, just shows how easily they have all been duped into making what is basically a political statement before the start of every match. rocket science! Anyway I was delighted to see that politicians, including Boris Johnson, are now voicing the same concerns and admitting they should have perhaps not have been quite so lax in allowing this situation to materialise. Bit late now.

At the time of writing it appears their erroneous decisions will put the whole nation, with all its accompanying misery and economic woes, back yet another month. Once again minority appeasement and ‘woke’ ideals have resulted in the detriment of the long suffering majority!

In closing, I do find it interesting, but not unexpected, that when something I have forecast in the past comes to fruition there is a deafening silence from the former dissenters! Perhaps the silent majority would let us know their views on these matters. Don’t worry; you won’t be arrested for speaking freely. Not yet anyway!

THE easing of restrictions both in Spain and in the UK is remarkable ‐ and nice ‐ for several reasons. But the most important is: how much the simple pleasures of ev‐ eryday life get lost in the familiarity of dai‐ ly routine.

Only when we are denied them do we re‐ alise what a complicated life we lead. It is this latter element that shocks us most. Of the hundreds of minor, even flippant, activ‐ ities we indulge in, we’re suddenly unable to replace them with anything useful or satisfying. Even working from home fails to make up for missing colleagues, chit‐chat and... just everyday life.

So, when released from these tortuous restrictions, we happily revel in anything that is different. Especially when it involves other people in similar situations. It sud‐ denly seems as if having fun is everywhere and so easy to find. Voices seem louder and more important. Laughter is easier to come by and everyone has stories of how they ‘survived’. Boredom is a long way off, and

At the same time, we learn that the ‘se‐ cret of happiness’ has finally been discov‐ ered. Neuroscientists from University Col‐ lege London used a crowd‐sourced gaming app and MRI scans of people’s brains to de‐

velop a rather long‐winded formula (that I’ll summarise for you here: @£!$%!*£@#).

Translated into plain language, it means that avoiding high expectations is the key to happiness.

But for a non‐neuroscientist friend with a

very long, fascinating life behind him, hap‐ piness depends more on personality. For him, some people are more inclined and able to be happy than others. Resentful and ungrateful types are seldom pleased with the world or their place in it even if they are comfortably off. (Yes, I am looking at you, Dominic Cummins!)

In summary, then, according to the latest research: don’t get your hopes up and you’ll have good times. Or as my granny used to say: “Hope for the best and pre‐ pare for the worst.”

Views of a Grumpy Old Man MY pal in Glasgow had a problem with his iPad so he went to his local Apple store and was told he couldn’t enter without an appointment. I thought it was strange but gave it no more thought ‘til I needed a new battery for Mrs S’ iPhone. I rang my local store, which is a 20-minute drive from home. The website gave me the 952 local Spanish number and I went through the usual press 1 for this, 2 for that, until I finally got a human being.

We went through the usual pleasantries, he told me his name and how he was going to be absolutely delighted to help me. I explained I needed a new battery, he asked where I was located and he then said there were no appointments - ever! I said, can you hear what you are saying, this is madness, can I speak to the store manager please?

I’m then informed that’s not possible as he’s not actually at that branch but in the Philippines. But I phoned my local store. Yes but appointments are done from the Philippines. OK put me through to a supervisor and after about 10 minutes on hold I am greeted

by Helen who has been made aware of my

problem and she is going to help me. Are you in the Philippines too? Nope I’m in another country! Anyway Michael when would you like an appointment? When can I have one?

Helen tells me any time tomorrow. But I thought there were none ever? We booked one for the next day. I asked why I had to go through this song and dance. She couldn’t explain so we left it at that.

Next day the store entrance looked like a scene from the movie Contagion with security guards taking your temperature, a ziggyzaggy entry system, then plastic gloves, hand sanitiser on top of the gloves and this is all before you have spoken to an Apple employee.

Finally they take the ‘phone away and tell me to come back in 90 minutes which I do only to be told it’s not ready for another 30 minutes. When I return it’s ready and they let me enter again with more gloves and more sanitiser. When I get the ‘phone the screen is cracked all over. Oh yes, it must have been cracked when it came in. NO IT WASN’T! The guy disappears for a few minutes then says, OK we will replace it free of charge, like he’s doing me a favour! Of course you will, you broke it! After another two hours, more gloves and sanitiser my ‘phone is ready. So that was five hours of my life and €250 spent on bored purchases in the mall!

LACK OF RESPECT Dear Sir/ Madam, I’d like to ask you, do you know what’s going on regarding respectability of the British Blue Badge in Spain?

It looks like a horrible disrespect of every disabled person, a holder of the Blue Badge on the Spanish soil.

Very recently I came across the Local Police banning cars parked in boxes reserved for the disabled of English origin.

As an argument the police officer stated the Blue Badge is no longer valid here regarding Brexit. No matter the one person is disabled but what it does is no respect to the individual person’s health condition.

This works against the human rights!

Worldwide, disabled people are being fully respected. Nobody objects to it.

So why does the Local Police officer have the right to order the car marked with the sign of health disability, to not park in places dedicated to those people?

I would be grateful if you, via your newspaper would alarm the Spanish world and thus reinforce it via the international human rights institution to intervene.

Hello Leapy, I cannot resist commenting on how ‘things have (understandably) changed’ re attitudes of the present day police.

I was a policewoman in the late 1960s ie during the Teddy-boy era and was stationed at a seaside resort. One particular Bank Holiday weekend the town was invaded by train loads of Teddy-boys and a fight was taking place in a side street. I was instructed not to allow any more ‘onlookers’ to go in that direction.

A gang of youths was causing trouble around some shops. After telling them off he said ‘Follow me to the Police Station’ and in a line without abuse they did so, can you imagine the youth of today doing this?

Which floor are you living on?

ROBERT SHALLIS HAVE you experienced being in an elevator when the doors open to a busy, chaotic, noisy floor full of confusion and stress with people rushing around with what appears to be no real direction?

You feel a sense of relief that you are not getting off on that particular floor and experience calm as the doors close.

The doors open at another floor which is incredibly dull, lifeless and boring and by that same token you feel grateful that this also isn’t your floor.

It’s easy to be on the outside passing judgement in other people’s lives, but not easy to see clearly when we are going through the everyday routine of life whether it’s full of stress and chaos or dull and mundane. We become accustomed to living the way we live and tend to accept things as they are. “Well, that’s just life.’’ As you all too often hear.

So, what is your ideal floor and what level are you ‘really’ living on?

It would be wonderful to simply switch to another floor and elevate yourself to a better place. However, too

many of us are stuck where we are and, in some ways, too frightened to press that button to make a change for the better.

So, why is this and why do we get so stuck in a situation that we would prefer not to be in?

Fear of the unknown and fear of change tends to prevail over our current lives and therefore the outcome we

would really like tends to slot into second place. Fear wins every time.

The idea of change is exciting and there is a big part of us that desires change but it doesn’t happen. So how do you get off that particular floor of life and join the ranks of those passing by in the elevator going to places you could only have hoped?

Once you have a made that decision

to change, add a few ingredients ‐ belief, faith and trust in your ability. You often hear people say; “well, if they can do it then so can I.” This is because they have experienced another, not unlike themselves, achieve something they too want to achieve. The reality of their experience will give a sense of belief and the urge one to take action as it feels so much more achievable.

Ignore the negativity of others, for they will remain stuck on their own floor of life, the very same you will be closing the doors to as you move on to new heights.

When you are in the process of achieving your worthwhile goal or purpose, you will find a sense of happiness and fulfilment as you progress forward.

The brave decision alone to change floors, will if anything, ignite roaring fires of excitement and hope.

So, which floor are you living on and which floor would you really like to go to? There are only so many tomorrows, if you really want to do something, now is the time!

You have a choice, continue to be driven by your fears or allow yourself to be driven by what you really want in order to expand, grow and up‐level.

Also, on June 27 in the park facilities, several volunteer members of the AECC will be present at the park to raise additional funds; you can sup‐ port them by making donations or buying mer‐ chandising.

Ways to collaborate with the AECC The AECC is a non‐profit organisation that leads society’s efforts to reduce the impact of cancer and improve people’s lives. It is made up of pa‐ tients, families, volunteers, collaborators and pro‐ fessionals who work together to educate about health, support and accompany sick people and their families, and finance research projects to ob‐ tain better diagnoses and treatment of cancer.

However, public health authorities have been urging holidaymakers to use anti-mosquito sprays and wear long sleeved clothing and trousers.

If you are hesitant about spraying a chemicalbased insect repellent on your skin, there are some natural alternatives that you can purchase or make yourself at home. These include water-based mixes which include Lemon Eucalyptus, Cinnamon oil or Tea tree oil.

SUGAR is a natural component of food like fruits and vegetables, but eating too much of it comes with consequences. We are now a lot more aware of the risks of too many sweets, but there are still plenty of myths about sugar and what it does to us.

The industry has long denied that it plays any role in chronic disease, but research suggests otherwise. Studies have connected excessive consumption with memory loss, high blood pressure, heart disease, cavities and weight gain. Most people could eat less sugar, less often. However, quitting sugar completely is unlikely to improve your health. Some sugar-free diets encourage people to cut out foods such as fruit and dairy, without evidence to support their exclusion.

But whole fruit is a great source of fructose as well as other essential minerals and vitamins.

However, research does show that reducing your intake of sugar in drinks such as coffee, tea and fizzy drinks does have a positive effect on your health. So, if you want to start somewhere, this is the place. This doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the sugar-like flavour that you have come to love. Sugar substitutes such as raw honey or stevia can mean you can still enjoy the taste, without the unhealthy consequences.

Exercising your jaw ALTHOUGH banned in Singapore, many people love chewing gum whilst going about their daily business.

For some it’s a habit, whilst others love the range of juicy flavours that certain gums can offer.

But most won’t have realised that chewing gum whilst you walk could help you to lose weight.

According to new research, when you chew gum you actually walk faster which in turn means that your body burns more calories.

Walking faster also increases your heart rate which is another important factor in losing weight.

The study, from Waseda University in Tokyo, was the first to look at how chewing gum affects the body whilst walking. All previous studies had set out to discover how it impacts the body whilst resting.

The research team which presented the findings at the recent European Congress of Obesity in Vienna concluded that: “chewing gum while walking affects a number of physical and physiological functions in men and women of all ages.”

This is welcome news for the chewing gum industry and not the first time that chewing gum has been associated with health benefits.

Previous studies have found that chewing gum on a regular basis can help to reduce stress and protect your teeth from plaque and decay.

This country may not have friends but it has the guaranteed sup‐ port of an exasperated but loyal father, the United States, (just as Belarus has Putin’s Russia). Nobody will intervene.

The brutal occupation of Palestine, a sovereign state, and the genocide in Gaza, is not an internal matter. It is a vi‐ olation of a sovereign state’s human rights. Let’s hope that the new coalition will seek a solution to the terrible plight of Palestinians.

Attacks of Sleep and Weakness in Dogs NARCOLEPSY and cataplexy are disorders of the ner‐ vous system in the dog. Narcolepsy occurs when an an‐ imal suffers from excessive daytime sleepiness, weak‐ ness, or brief losses of consciousness. The episodes are brief and go away by themselves. Cataplexy is charac‐ terised by sudden muscle paralysis without loss of con‐ sciousness, remains alert, and can follow movement with its eyes throughout the episode.

The episodes of cataplexy also are spontaneous, brief, and reversible. These disorders are relatively common in dogs. The causes are hereditary in Labrador retrievers, poodles, dachshunds, and Doberman pin‐ schers, possible immune system involvement, nerve disorder or Idiopathic (unknown) and pituitary macro‐ tumor (brain).

For diagnosis the veterinary will perform a physical exam, including a blood chemical profile, a complete blood count, a urinalysis, and an electrolyte panel to rule out any underlying diseases. Brain MRI should be strongly considered in sporadic cases of narcolepsy‐cat‐ aplexy because sometimes brain tumours could be the reason.

These attacks can be unpleasant but they are not life‐ threatening. If the episodes are frequent, there may be medications your veterinarian can prescribe to help con‐ trol the frequency or duration of the attacks.

by Mark Slack IN the current climate (if you’ll excuse the pun) SUVs are viewed as environmen‐ tal villains, automotive pol‐ luters of the very worst kind. The truth is that many SUVs are now hybrids with smaller combustion en‐ gines, so the days of every SUV being oversized with a large petrol or diesel addict‐ ed engine is not the full story.

Kia Sorento is imposing Kia’s newly launched Sorento models and the self‐charging hybrid Soren‐ to in particular is a good case in point. Its 1.6‐litre petrol engine is bolstered by a 64 kw battery deliver‐ ing 40 mpg economy in a very spacious SUV with proper off‐road capability and a

real family holdall. Hybrids remove any range concerns and the need for an expen‐ sive home charger, or deal‐ ing with our somewhat frag‐ mented (I’m being polite!) public charging network.

Priced from €45,802 (£39,360) the Sorento line‐ up offers both plug‐in and self‐charging hybrids and all models look suit‐ ably impos‐ ing.

Standard equipment across the range of Sorento models includes heated seats and steering wheel, smart cruise control, LED headlights, reversing cam‐ era, dual zone air condition‐ ing for all seats, auto dim‐ ming mirrors, auto wipers and lights, Apple Car Play and Android Auto.

My top of the range self‐ charging hybrid version is the automotive equivalent of the Ritz, adding such items as leather, power adjustment of the

seats, privacy glass, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, keyless entry and start, power tailgate, pow‐ ered folding door mirrors, along with navigation, wire‐ less charging and a Bose sound system onto the en‐ try level list of equipment.

Costing €54,629 (£46,945) you would expect it to be well equipped and when you add all the above items to the level of tech, it does‐ n’t disappoint. There are a myriad of safety features in‐ cluding a head‐up display and a clever speed limit based intelligent cruise con‐

trol, all‐wheel‐drive and the clever hybrid system which charges itself from the car’s engine. It not only removes those range concerns but provides a cleaner emis‐ sions record than would normally be the case with a more traditionally powered SUV of this size.

If I were being picky about the Sorento then some of the controls are not especially intuitive and the layout of the dash controls is a little fussy, but owner‐ ship would soon bring famil‐ iarity. It is a minor point in a car that has a distinct feel‐ ing of luxury with its com‐ fortable, quilted leather seats, hushed interior and solidity of build quality.

Speedometers and your real speed Electric Motorcycle With 2 Engines EVERY year, thousands of drivers are reported for speeding in Spain, and data from 2020 shows that the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) imposed more than €2.4 million fines for this infraction, which represents 62.7 per cent of the total penalties handed out for traffic offences.

As we all know, the speedome‐ ter is the device that indicates the speed of a vehicle, and without go‐ ing into technical disquisitions, this is how the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) defines it, but, when we talk about the speedometer as installed in a vehi‐ cle, it is a well‐known fact the de‐ vice is not displaying the actual speed the vehicle is travelling at.

In fact, the speedometer always shows a higher speed than the ac‐ tual speed, on all vehicles, without exception, whether it is analogue or digital, for legal reasons.

In the European Union, the reg‐ ulations establish that the indicated speed should never be lower than the real speed with a maximum margin of error on the real speed of 10 per cent, or + 4 kmh, whereas in other countries, such as the Unit‐ ed States and Japan, with a long au‐ tomotive tradition, the rule is

SPEEDOMETER: Your actual speed will be lower. stricter, and a maximum deviation of only 4 per cent is allowed.

Put into practice, this means in a European vehicle travelling at a speed of 60 kmh, the maximum er‐ ror limit indicated by the device is 10 kmh, and if your vehicle shows a speed of 70 kmh, it means that you are travelling between 60 and 70 kmh, but never below 60 kmh.

At a speed of 100 kmh, the max‐ imum error limit is 14 kmh, so even if the speedometer indicates that the car is travelling at 114 kmh, it will be doing so between a hairpin that goes from a minimum of 100 kmh to a maximum of 114 kmh.

Apart from the fact that the leg‐ islation establishes that this is the case, we can verify it ourselves first‐ hand, by using a GPS device to monitor the speed, as it is a much

more precise device, receiving its signal from a satellite which locates the position of your vehicle, and then calculates its distance and di‐ vides this data by the time taken to travel this distance, to produce the velocity shown in the GPS display, and you will see that the speed reg‐ istered by the GPS will be lower than that shown by your vehicles speedometer.

There are other factors that can affect the speedometer reading, such as tyre pressures, because a speedometer calculates the vehi‐ cle's velocity by measuring the rota‐ tion of the wheel and the drive‐ shaft, through a sensor located in the gearbox, therefore, tyres with different wear can produce differ‐ ent calculations of up to 2kph ap‐ parently.

THE world of electric motorcycles just keeps on expanding, and now, American brand Zaiser Motors, a pioneer in the world of electric motorcycles, is developing new designs, new technology, and the possibility of a longer distance trav‐ elled on the battery life, or autono‐ my.

They have developed a new model, the Electrocycle, one that stands out for its imposing appear‐ ance, reminiscent of a Harley‐ Davidson, and there is no doubt that elegance and retro air are two of its most obvious features.

A unique feature of the Electro‐ cycle is that it is built in a modular way, meaning that its parts can easily be replaced if they suffer wear and tear over time.

Its wheelbase is quite wide and

striking, as it contributes to high‐ lighting the long silhouette of the vehicle, but beyond the aesthetics of this novelty, what is most sur‐ prising comes from a technological point of view, and it is that, as Zais‐ er assures, which will be the first electric motorcycle in the world equipped to come fully‐equipped with two motors, with one in‐ stalled on each wheel.

In terms of performance, the Electrocycle can go from 0 to 100 kmh in 3.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 193 kmh, and also worth noting is that this bike will have a removable battery whose capacity is 17.5 kWh, which will provide the possibility of fast charging, but above all, the crowning glory has to be the fact it can do a distance of 500km on one charge, a figure

that is currently still very unusual in the electric motorcycle sector.

Zaiser Motors has a launch date planned for introducing the Elec‐ trocycle that is between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, and they have stated that the price will be in the region of €20,500.
