Fears for the future TRAWLER fleets recently called a nationwide one‐day strike with Alicante guilds protesting in Villajoyosa at EU directives affecting the Mediterranean. Six hundred trawler skippers and crews from Alicante Province’s 180 boats that belong to 21 different fishing guilds demonstrated their dissatisfaction with the central government’s ‘indifference’ to what they warn could herald the end to trawling in the Valencian Community. Soon they will be able to put to sea only 120 days a year when, they maintain, each boat needs an annual minimum of 190 days to break even. The demonstrators also read out a joint communique calling on the central government to mediate with Brussels and find a vi‐ able solution for Spain’s Mediterranean trawler fleets.
