Record vaccine delivery

THE Balearic Islands have received more than 116,000 doses of vaccine against Covid‐19 this week, the largest number of vac‐ cines to arrive on the Islands so far.

In total, 116,390 new doses were due to arrive, of those 66,690 doses were Pfizer vaccines, of which 51,480 will be used in Mallorca There were 33,100 doses of AstraZeneca, 27,100 for Mallorca, Some 7,600 doses of Moderna arrived, 6,300 for Mallorca A total of 9,000 doses of the Janssen vaccine were also due with, 7,000 for Mallorca, Up to 46,000 people can now get their first doses of the vac‐ cine, including those lined up for the single shot Janssen vaccine.

Most of these first doses will be used to immunise people born between 1971 and 1976, who from Thursday can request an appointment through BITCITA.

WITH an eye to a future of environmentally friendly air travel, Bedford (UK) based Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) is looking to produce hydro‐ gen‐fuelled airships.

The Airlander 10 will be able to carry from 72 to nearly 100 passengers (de‐ pending upon cabin layout) in extreme comfort over a series of short routes sav‐ ing huge amounts of emis‐ sions.

It has just given examples of the routes it hopes to be able to cover starting in 2025, one of which is Barcelona to Palma Mallor‐ ca which would take around four and a half

hours which it argues is similar to the time spent flying the 228 kilometres if one factors in travel to and time waiting at airports.

According to the compa‐ ny, which has attracted in‐ vestment from Peter Ham‐ bro who owns a Russian Gold mine and Bruce Dick‐ inson, singer with Iron Maiden as well as other pri‐ vate investors, the Airlan‐ der 10 will produce 4.54 kg of CO2 per passenger com‐ pared to 52.8 kg of CO2 per aircraft passenger.

The pandemic and the global need to review inter‐ national travel and to cause less pollution appears to be

an ideal time for this new venture to take off and the design assumes that the airship will be able to take off and land on a sizeable flat surface.

All Type Certified com‐ mercial aircraft must oper‐ ate to strict standards so the Airlander will be no dif‐ ferent and will be able to operate in similar weather conditions to a traditional aircraft.

The company is also look‐ ing to offer versions to the military which nowadays becomes more data reliant and the spacious interior of the Airlander 10 can easily be adapted for such use.

More taxis on the streets

THE Palma Taxi Coordination Board, has been agreed to extend the service due to the forecasts of increased mobility.

Having allowed the Palma taxis (of which there are 1,246) to increase their shifts from 40 per cent to 60 per cent from May 16, it has now been decided that they can work 80 per cent of

the normal shifts until June 15.

This increase is on the understanding that they can only service the centre of Palma and may not pick up from Palma airport as the inten‐ tion is to see more cabs on the streets of Palma as the curfew is ended and opening times of bars and restaurants extended.

€30,000 for Cancer care

ON Wednesday May 26, the Calanova Cancer Care Charity gave a total of €18,000 to three deserving local cancer charities.

The sum of €12,000 went to the AECC Spanish Association of Cancer Care, €3,000 to the Mallorca Cancer Support Group and a further €3,000 to Dime Palliative Care.

This is thanks to the many volunteers who, abiding by the rules, came in and kept the shop open and running albeit only in the mornings from 10am to 2pm, although the shop did have to close completely for a few weeks.

Monastery to be inhabited again IN 2016, after being inhabited as a monastery since the 16th century, the last nuns left the Monestir de la Concepció de la Verge Maria de Sineu.

This historic building was first built at the beginning of the 14th century as a royal res‐ idence for Jaume II but had been the home of Franciscan nuns for more than 500 years.

It was given to the Order of the Immacu‐

Beach team IN order to ensure that the Capdepera beaches would be as safe as possible this sum‐ mer, the council called for an internal evaluation of those in‐ volved with the Beach Rescue Service.

This evaluation, the first of its kind in the municipality, consisted of a combined test in order to assess the physical condition of the team, assess professional performance and coordination among all mem‐ bers.

The council considered that the time spent testing those in the various teams at Cala Agul‐ la was very worthwhile and the results were considered a suc‐ cess.

These practices were impor‐ tant in order to ensure that when the real cases arrive as the beaches open, that the team is able to respond ade‐ quately to any situation of risk on the beaches.

During the season a series of actions are planned that the rescue and lifeguard service will organise in order to im‐ prove the quality, strengthen the integration of the team and improve communication be‐ tween the parties involved.

Son Real necropolis THE Son Real necropolis in Can Picafort is the most important site in an archaeologically rich area and work is to restart on new excavations.

Although the land in which it is found is called Punta de los Phoenicians, there were actually never any significant Phoenician settlements in the area and it is believed that all of the bodies found were of indigenous peo‐ ple.

Rediscovered in the middle of the 20th century excavations took place in 1957‐1969 and 1998‐2019, but the pandemic stopped further investigations.

So far 143 tombs have been discovered and bone remains of at least 425 people have been recovered as well as tools, weapons etc.

These tombs which were used between the seventh and second centuries BC are be‐ lieved to have been reserved for the elite of the local communi‐ ties.

Now, the Santa Margalida Council have committed a fur‐ ther €40,000 to continue the ex‐ cavations and complete the work started in 1998.

Protecting the octopus AS there are many more requests to grant licences to fish for octopus, the government is amending the 2015 decree to help protect stocks.

In order to ensure the sustainability of the resource and the activity of octopus fishing, a closed period is established (60 days a year for octopus in all areas less than 50 metres deep), in addition, a minimum size and the moorings suitable for the catching of the species are modified.

At the same time, this decree establishes a mandatory week‐ ly break of 41 hours for all professional shellfish and octopus fishing.

During this period, which is from 10pm on Friday to 3pm on Sunday, all mooring, and in particular octopus traps, must be removed from the sea and must remain on land or on board the boats. The decree also allows for the creation of a monitor‐ ing group to ensure that the new rules are complied with.

Refuges reopen THOSE shelters (refuges) managed by the Ministry of the Environment and Territory will reopen from the second half of June.

The online platform for reserving places is now ac‐ tive and reservations may be made to cover a period of one month (ie, from June 14 to July 14 initially and as the health situation evolves, reservations will be scheduled for the fol‐ lowing months.

The maximum capacity allowed is six people per room. Therefore, Cuber, Gorg Blau, Lavanor, Son Real, Coll Baix, Binifaldo Petit, Es Oguers, s’Alzina and Cabrera can be re‐ served for six, while Sa Co‐ ma de Binifaldo will be for just two people.

Reservations can be made through the website of the Balearic Institute of Nature (IBANAT) and for all applications, a declara‐ tion of compliance with health regulations must be signed during the stay.

Assisted bathing FROM June 1, there are six accessible points for assisted bathing on the beaches of Palma.

All the beaches in the municipality have this ser‐ vice: Cala Major, Can Pere Antoni, Ciutat Jardí, Cala Estància and two points on Playa de Palma.

Each bathing point has a shaded area, accessible showers and toilets, sup‐ port material for users and is open during certain dates and times.

Service staff will pro‐ vide the necessary assis‐ tance to make transfers to wheelchairs and / or amphibians, and to ac‐ company bathers to en‐ joy the water safely.

Safety measures for the use of masks and hy‐ droalcoholic gel will be followed during each visit.

New ITV (MOT) rules Relaxing of restrictions from Front page »

VALID ITV: To drive without one will be considered a serious offence.

DRIVING your car on Spanish roads without a valid ITV (MOT) from the first of June 2021 could now carry a fine of €500, accord‐ ing to a report from the DGT. Driving without having an ITV or current insurance is consid‐ ered a serious or very serious of‐ fence, depending on the circum‐ stances. According to the current law, not having the technical in‐ spection up‐to‐date can entail a financial penalty of between €200 or €500, depending on the case.

This also includes cars parked

in the garage or on the street without having carried out the technical inspection.

Driving without insurance can attract a fine that varies from €601 to €3,005, depending on the uninsured time and if the of‐ fence is repeated.

Continuing to use the vehicle despite it having serious defects, apart from taking it to a garage for repair in order to retake the test, generates a fine of €200. In this case, the owner of the vehi‐ cle is obliged to repair the serious defects and return to the ITV sta‐

tion, within a maximum period of two months, to verify the cor‐ rection of said defects.

Continuing to drive the vehicle with very serious defects through a no‐pass, carries a penalty of €500.

In these cases, the vehicle is not authorised to leave the ITV station by its own means, but will have to be transported by a ‘grua’ to the garage for repairs and return to the ITV station, within a maximum period of two months, to check if the defects have been corrected.

GOOD news for Mallorca and the Balearics as the government announced on May 31 that with effect from midnight on Sunday June 6, the curfew is abolished.

In addition, government spokesman, Iago Negueruela confirmed that from the same date, the number of people who can meet out‐ side will be increased from eight to 15 and in‐ side from six to 10.

All of this is subject to review and the govern‐ ment has the ability to request the imposition of new restrictions effective from June 20 should there be a peak in infections.

The decision to relax restrictions further was made according to Negueruela thanks to the positive evolution of the epidemiological situa‐ tion of the community and the progression of

the vaccination process, as 40 per cent of the population have at least had the first dose.

Then on Tuesday June 1, President of the Balearic Government Francina Armengol con‐ firmed that restaurants and bars could remain open until midnight from Sunday June 6 with interiors allowed to open at 50 per cent capaci‐ ty and four people at a table whilst terraces would be ay 100 per cent capacity and maxi‐ mum of eight people per table.

Church services may now allow the congre‐ gation to reach 100 per cent of capacity provid‐ ed that at least 1.5 metres of separation be‐ tween worshippers is possible.

The government still intends to apply to the court for permission to maintain controls at ports and airports for the immediate future.

Campaign To Lower prices THE draft proposal was presented on Tuesday June 1 to the Council of Ministers and may reduce the price of electricity bills by as much as 5 per cent.

The Ministry for Ecological Transition was to present the draft proposal to the Council of Ministers on Tuesday from which it is intended to end the so-called ‘benefits that have fallen from the sky’ in reference to the excess remuneration that companies get for electricity produced by their gas and nuclear plants.

The law is part of the government agreement signed by the parties of the Unidas Podemos and PSOE. However, it is not until now that, in the midst of escalating electricity prices, Teresa Ribera

has brought the matter to the attention of the Council of Ministers.

“The government is concerned about the impact of the price of Co2 [carbon dioxide] on the price of electricity and its possible consequences on the recovery of the domestic and industrial economies,” sources from the team of Vice President Teresa Rivera said.

The idea is that if people are encouraged to use electricity at times of less demand, it will reduce the need to invest in infrastructure for the transmission and distribution of electric supply, and in turn allow them to save on their bills because these investments are paid for by consumers.

Support for the Self-Employed Extended THE Spanish government is set to approve an extension of support to freelancers and the self-employed. The move follows a hard-won agreement with U P T A , AT A a n d U AT A E , unions representing autonomos.

Social Security contributions will be reduced by 90 per cent for the month of June, 75 per cent for July, 50 per cent for August and 25 per cent for September for those self-employed workers who are entitled to the extraordinary benefit for cessation of activity.

Article 5 of the law says the self-employed who were registered in the RE-

TA and the Special Regime for Sea workers will enjoy the bonuses as of June 1.

As in the case of the E R T ES, the extension will be until the end of September.

Article 6 says the selfemployed who are forced to suspend their work as a result of “a resolution adopted by the competent authority” in relation to the coronavirus pandemic, will have the right to some social security benefits.

The amount of the benefit is once again 70 per cent of the minimum contribution base that corresponds to the activity carried out by the self-employed.

easyJet Issues Statement EASYJET were forced to issue a statement fol‐ lowing claims that the ‘majority’ of its flights are now being cancelled. The statement comes amidst thousands of Brits get their hopes up about flying away on holiday this summer.

With a number of countries now on the green list, meaning travellers won’t have to quarantine when they return home, many are being left con‐ fused and disappointed.

A verified easyJet account Tweeted on May 27, “The majority of our flights are being cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. Flights will continue to be reviewed. We continue to review our sched‐ ule and will make amends where we can in order to reflect the changes in demand and restrictions.”

Sanchez’s Helicopter Ride PRESIDENT Pedro Sanchez and two senior ministers have been trounced by Spanish media outlets for using a helicopter to travel to a green energy event in Toledo after announcing Spain would end short flights.

Travelling to promote his environmental proposals, including a ban on flights on routes that can be made in two and a half hours by train, Sanchez, the Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera and the Minister for Industry, Reyes Maroto, decided to arrive in the city by helicopter on Monday May 24.

‘Votes for life’ for British citizens living in Spain ● British citizens who have moved abroad will be given ‘votes for life’ as the UK Govern‐ ment scraps the arbitrary 15‐ year limit on the voting rights ● New measures announced on Thursday May 27 will also make it easier for overseas elec‐

tors to remain registered to vote for longer. ● Together, these changes will empower more British citi‐ zens living overseas to partici‐ pate in the UK’s democracy.

New measures announced in the Queen’s Speech will

make it easier for British citi‐ zens who have moved abroad to participate in British democ‐ racy.

Decisions made in the UK Par‐ liament on foreign policy, de‐ fence, immigration, pensions and trade deals affect British citi‐ zens who live overseas. It is therefore right that they have a say in UK Parliamentary General Elections.

On May 27 the Government was setting out further detail on plans to scrap the arbitrary rule that prevents British citizens from voting in General Elections if they have lived abroad for more than 15 years.

The changes, which will form part of the Elections Bill, will also include measures to enable overseas electors to stay regis‐ tered to vote for longer, with an absent voting arrangement in place.

The Government’s wider Elec‐ tions Bill will also: improve ac‐ cess to voting for electors with disabilities; prevent foreign in‐ terference by hostile actors; tackle electoral fraud by post, proxy, in polling stations or through intimidation and undue influence; and increase trans‐ parency and accountability with‐ in our elections.

Further announcements will be made on its measures ahead of the Bill’s introduction.

Salaries disclosure

EMPLOYERS will have to disclose salaries to potential job candidates before they fix a date for an interview, according to proposals put forward by the European Commission.

Workers will also have the right to see pay scales broken down by position and gender in an effort to ensure pay transparency and end the practice of women being paid less for the same work.

The proposals will also end the practice of employers asking candidates what their previous salaries were and will empower employees who discover they are victims of pay discrimination to seek compensation.

The Commission’s proposals have been welcomed by Spain’s vice-president, Carmen Calvo, who said there was still a long way to go, “We have not achieved full equality.”

International Cruises return from June THE Spanish transport ministry said it will allow cruise ships to dock in its ports from Monday June 7, in the latest bid to salvage the country’s battered tourism sector in time for the summer 2021 season.

CHINESE President Xi Jinping had a half hour phone con‐ versation with Spanish Presi‐ dent Pedro Sánchez this week.

After asking Sánchez to convey his cordial greetings to King Felipe VI, he pointed out that China and Spain are important strategic partners and cooperation between the two is important.

Currency outlook: US dollar slumps on abysmal payroll reading, Pound surges amid easing political uncertainty

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.87 to £0.86 EUR/USD: Up from $1.20 to $1.22 An improving economic outlook in the Eurozone has been a key source of support for the euro over the past month.

This comes in response to the continued acceleration of the EU’s vaccine rollout as well as the reopening of more countries within the bloc.

This upside in the euro has also been supported by recent EUR data releases, which have been broadly positive and point to a strong rebound in economic activity in the second quarter. However, confirmation that the bloc suffered a double‐dip reces‐ sion over the winter ensured it wasn’t all plain sailing for the single currency.

Turning to June, we are likely to see the euro maintain its recent uptrend as the Eu‐ rozone’s economic prospects continue to improve.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.14 to €1.15 GBP/USD: Up from $1.38 to $1.41 The past month has seen the pound trend broadly higher, with the most no‐ table upswing in Sterling coming in re‐ sponse to reduced political uncertainty in the UK. This came after the Scottish National Par‐ ty failed to secure an outright majority in May’s election, reducing fears of an imme‐ diate independence referendum.

Also providing some lift to Sterling has been the reopening of more of the UK

economy and positive domestic data re‐ leases, although these gains have been tempered somewhat in the second half of May by UK coronavirus developments.

With the spread of the Indian variant of the coronavirus in the UK threatening to disrupt the government’s roadmap for eas‐ ing restrictions, domestic coronavirus headlines are likely to act as a key catalyst of movement in the pound in the weeks to come.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.72 to £0.70 USD/EUR: Down from €0.82 to €0.81 After fluctuating in late April in response to a dovish Federal Reserve policy state‐ ment and upbeat GDP figures, the US dollar experienced an aggressive selloff at the start of May following a startling miss in the latest US payroll reading.

A sharper‐than‐expected acceleration of domestic inflation in April helped the ‘Greenback’ to claw back some of its losses in the week that followed.

However, this upside in USD proved short lived, amidst expectations the Fed will continue to view the surge in inflation as ‘transitory’, as well as in the face of an increasingly upbeat global outlook, which has sapped safe‐haven demand.

Looking ahead, USD investors will likely be keeping a close eye on May’s payroll fig‐ ures, as another underwhelming reading will likely keep the pressure on the US dol‐ lar and validate the Fed’s current dovish bias.

So bitter and biased

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHAT an arrogant and highly predictable organisation the BBC actually are. When Dominic Cummings made his now infamous and highly illegal ‘Durham dash,’ during lockdown in March of last year, the media, especially the BBC, made an enormous hue and cry, accusing him of being a blatant liar and baying for his resignation.

In the light of his recent unsubstantiated accusations against the government, the BBC has revelled in his statements, treating them all as though they were gospel truth and truly making a meal out of every ‘fact’ that has spilled from the lips of this obnoxious individual, who is obviously so bitter and biased towards his former employers he would swear they were hatching a plot to put everyone in a onesie and stick a chip in their heads if he thought he could get away with it.

The BBC has of course also used the whole unsavoury incident to somehow divert the public’s attention from the Martin Bashir interview with Lady Diana, now proven to have been

obtained by stealth and the falsifying of bank documents. In their usual ‘damage control’ mode they have symbolically begun to sever the heads of a few initial scapegoats and minions involved. Tony Hall, who was head of the BBC at the time, has resigned from his position on the board of The

National Gallery, a gesture which means just about zilch.

Bashir has stepped down citing ‘health reasons’ and to date that has been the sum total of their retributions.

Will they reach the top? Don’t hold yer breath. I dread to think of the phone calls, text messages and shady

meetings that have taken place among the hierarchy, as they scrambled to cover their backs in their undoubted panic to exonerate themselves from the whole seedy exercise.

out and dumped somewhere nasty.

Why should the British taxpayer have to shell out for a load of well‐heeled manipulators, who are the hypocritical purveyors of left wing propaganda and Political Correctness which, if they have their way (heaven forbid) will ultimately put the UK under the jurisdiction of the Labour party at the next election?

I suppose it’s a complete coincidence that the new strain of Indian Covid happened to manifest two to three weeks after the return of the thousands of ethnic minorities who were allowed to visit Pakistan and India to celebrate the Ramadan and Eid festivals?

I also understand that a further nightmare that is threatening journalist and newscasters all over the world is yet another new variant which is thought to have originated in Wales and will henceforth be known as the Llanfaipwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrob wlllantysiliogogogoch Strain! Just kidding. See ya.

IN the latest diversity drive, Rugby chiefs have scrapped using the ‘inappropriate’ nickname ‘Saxons’ for England’s second team which will revert to the name ‘England A’ after 15 years of being branded as the England Saxons. This in the wake of the RFU’s decision to distance itself from ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,’ the slave spiritual adopted as a terrace anthem by England rugby supporters.

What is wrong with these people? Are we going to force Sussex (South Saxons) and Essex (East Saxons) to change the names of their counties because the name doesn’t describe the people who live there or discriminates against residents who can’t trace their ances‐ try to the Saxons? The RFU does realise that England derives from the land of the Angles, right?

Yes, rugby may need to be more inclusive but a mindless name change won’t help. This is
