BREAKING NEWS FOUND in Las Chapas, by a believed to be local businessman of international fame, thought to have come from Holland to the coast, but not believed to have originated from that countr y, has found in his lock-up two paintings in a box from a world famous artist thought to be worth millions.

Described by the owner as thinking they were pretty average examples, he is dumbfounded by his luck and good fortune to have now discovered them.

Local food donations LOCAL POLICE in Torremolinos have collected 200 tons of food and hygiene items and donated them to the Red Cross to give to homeless people in the munici‐ pality The mayor of Torremolinos, José Ortiz, the Security council‐ lor, Antonio Ruiz, and the Chief Commissioner of the Local Po‐ lice, José Miguel Ávila, attended the donation ceremony on Fri‐ day May 28.

The mayor observed “this do‐ nation is one more example of the solidarity and commitment that our local officers have. Ev‐ ery day in their work they have to deal with the most disadvan‐ taged of Torremolinos, their work is fundamental for these people and logically the situa‐ tions they see hurt them.

The idea for the collection came about during the worst months of the pandemic in 2020, when the Local Police ac‐ companied the Red Cross volun‐ teers in their various humanitari‐ an activities.

Midsummer Lunch Fundraiser HAVING been unable to organise any fundraising events in 2020 due to the pandemic the ACE Dog Shelter based in La Cala de Mijas are celebrating summer.

Founded in the area in 1999, ACE have been looking after abandoned dogs ever since and will be holding their Midsummer Charity Lunch on Saturday June 19 at the Restaurante La Sierra (Cerrado del Aguila Golf & Resort, Mijas Costa).

With its spectacular open terrace and stunning panoramic views, the event will be even better as star musical attraction is the very popular Ricky Lavazza.

The lunch starts at 1.30pm with a glass of cava on arrival, followed by a delicious

three-course lunch (offering a choice of menu plus vegetarian options, and including beer, wine, soft drinks and water during lunch service).

There will also be a raffle with some fantastic prizes generously donated by local businesses and supporters.

Arsonist Stands Trial A TRIAL will take place this week in the Provincial Court of Malaga of a 50‐year‐ old Spanish woman who stands accused of seven cases of arson in less than a one‐ month period, between July 19 and Au‐ gust 14, 2015, all in the Calanova area of the Mijas municipality, Prosecutors have requested an 18‐year sentence for the woman if found guilty, pointing out that she intentionally set the fires by using alcohol or ignition blocks in urban plots of the Calanova neighbour‐ hood.

Immediately after the last fire, the woman was arrested, and even though her incidents never caused any personal damage, or any damage to property, an assessment made by the Ministry of the Environment and Territorial Planning of the Junta de Andalucia sets the costs of extinguishing her seven fires at €13,459 (£11,610).

The Malaga Prosecutor’s Office is re‐ questing the Mijas arsonist be sentenced on seven charges of arson, and also be held responsible for the repayment of the €13,459 (£11,610) costs of extinguishing the fires.

Theatre And Musical Festival discounts

THE councillor for Celebrations, Pilar Ramírez, has announced that residents of Benalmadena will be able to enjoy a 10 per cent discount for shows at the Benalmadena Theatre and Musical Festival. The events will be held in July and August at the Municipal Auditorium of La Paloma.

Tickets purchased through the website will not be discounted though so if you want to take advantage of the promotion you must buy your tickets in person at the box office. The councillor explained that: “To enjoy this discount, they must purchase their tickets at the municipal auditorium box office.”

During June the box office at the auditorium is open Tuesday to Sunday from 6.30pm to 10pm, and in July Tuesday to Sunday from 6pm to midnight.

Malaga Parking Discounts reduced THE municipal car parks in Malaga which are managed by Smassa are offering users a discounted rate of 10 per cent, which came into effect on Tuesday, June 1. This initiative aims to promote economic reactivation in the area and draw in visitors.

Previously the car parks had seen a 25 per cent reduction in fees which had been in place since May 17. The discounted rate has been reduced as the economic activity in the area is gradually recovering.

Businesses in Malaga have been boosted since restrictions on opening hours were reduced and the State of Alarm ended in early May. The city council has said that these discounts are only a temporary measure, and will run until June 30.

Selection of Sardines on the Beach A STUNNING selection of 20 beach bars and restaurants are set to take part in the Fuengirola town hall’s latest initiative which hopes to support local businesses and chiringuitos that have suffered due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The bars and restaurants will be offering up traditional espetos for all to enjoy. Establishments will delight locals and tourists alike with sardines threaded onto a skewer and roasted over coals, along with a drink for only €4.

The initiative named ‘Semanas de Espeto’, started on May 31 and will run until June 4 and again from June 7 to June 11. Not only will customers get the chance to enjoy some stunning cuisine, but they will also be able to enter into a raffle to win an evening meal which will take place at one of the participating establishments and is worth €50.

So do not be shy, and head on down to Fuengirola in order to enjoy some sardines and take in the local atmosphere.

AIDS charity ceases operation THE main Aids/HIV charity on the Costa del Sol, the Concordia Antisida Association ceased operation on Monday May 31 according to a letter issued by its founder and president.

Road bridge now removed SEVERAL months ago, a road bridge that straddles the A7 at Cancelada (Estepona) was discovered to have some major struc‐ tural problems.

The road bridge very quickly became one way so that those heading from Can‐ celada towards Marbella could access the A7, but those who were travelling from Estepona had to drive on for several kilo‐ metres to come off at the Benahavis junc‐

Now after several months of apparent inactivity on the bridge which caused the mayor of Estepona to write to the High‐ ways Agency to demand that something be done to speed up the repairs, some‐ thing has been done as between midnight and 8am on Sunday, May 30, the road was closed and the span of the bridge was

removed which means that the hold ups will now affect traffic going both ways.

In theory there should be a back route from Cancelada all the way to the Bena‐ havis road, but this is not currently acces‐ sible as there are road works there which means that the road is closed.

No‐one knows why the work wasn’t started earlier or when it will be complet‐ ed.

Duquesa Port getting ready THE Marinas del Mediterrá‐ neo Group, the company that manages the Duquesa Port concession says that Belgian, British and French sailors are planning visits.

Spanish life expectancy THE latest release of an‐ nual statistics of urban in‐ dicators produced by the National institute of Statis‐ tics (INE) shows that resi‐ dents in one town have a life expectancy of under 80 years.

The average life ex‐ pectancy of residents of most towns and cities of the 126 municipalities re‐ viewed shows that aver‐ age age ranges between 80 and 85 years although there are a few suburbs of Madrid where the 85 bar‐ rier is broken.

The border town of La Linea de la Concepcion in Cadiz Province which has a reputation for smuggling drugs and tobacco, was the only one of the 126 cities with a life expectan‐ cy at birth of less than 80 years at just 79.7 years.

To add to the woes of the residents there, it took seventh place in Spain as having the worst unem‐ ployment record at more than 25 per cent and this is lower than would have been expected had it not been for the number of cross‐border workers who have jobs in Gibraltar.

On Saturday June 5 from 10.00am to 3.00pm there will be a fun, family-friendly event to support the environment in Marbella, centred around the Puerto Deportivo, the paseo and Playa Venus. Organised by the Rotary Club Marbella-Guadalmina and Mi Moana, this event is part of the EndPlasticSoup International Action Day. The aim of the Action Day is to increase awareness of the challenges we face with plastic waste and encourages everyone to get involved with tackling the problem by cleaning up plastic waste wherever they find it.

The event includes a beach clean, with Mi Moana and Diving with Nic taking to the water and the shore to clean the beach and the ocean. Volunteers are welcome to come and help the team to collect as much plastic as possible to help protect the ocean and vulnerable wildlife. There will also be stalls on the paseo around the Puerto Deportivo area and Playa Venus, with educational and interesting activities, as well as information about the environment and activities. easyJet Issues Statement EASYJET were forced to issue a statement fol‐ lowing claims that the ‘majority’ of its flights are now being cancelled. The statement comes amidst thousands of Brits get their hopes up about flying away on holiday this summer.

With a number of countries now on the green list, meaning travellers won’t have to quarantine when they return home, many are being left con‐ fused and disappointed.

A verified easyJet account Tweeted on May 27, “The majority of our flights are being cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. Flights will continue to be reviewed. We continue to review our sched‐ ule and will make amends where we can in order to reflect the changes in demand and restrictions.”

However, when they were approached, a spokesperson for the firm provided an alternative statement: “We want to fly as many customers on as many flights as possible this summer, however as all airlines have been doing throughout the pandemic, we continue to adjust our flying schedule based on the restrictions put in place by governments to en‐ sure our flying programme best matches de‐ mand.”

Sanchez’s Helicopter Ride PRESIDENT Pedro Sanchez and two senior ministers have been trounced by Spanish media outlets for using a helicopter to travel to a green energy event in Toledo after announcing Spain would end short flights.

Travelling to promote his environmental proposals, including a ban on flights on routes that can be made in two and a half hours by train, Sanchez, the Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera and the Minister for Industry, Reyes Maroto, decided to arrive in the city by helicopter on Monday May 24.

The distance between Madrid and Toledo is just 45 minutes by car and 25 minutes by train. The reason given for Sanchez using a helicopter to cover such a short distance is that he urgently needed to attend an extraordinary summit in Brussels with other European Union leaders to address the management of immigration and other issues.

FOR the third month running, this charitable platform has raised €1,000 for charity. Dur‐ ing May, at least that amount was raised in support of Last Chance Animal Rescue, with the proceeds of tomorrow’s (Friday June 4) Fun Quiz at Restaurante Cerros de Águila still to come.

The Group’s Facebook page has now attracted over 650 members, representing a growth of 400 in the last three months alone.

The Group’s key words are support and kindness and these are reflected through‐ out their events and outlook.

In June, Simply Surviving Group turns its attention to the famous Costa del Sol can‐ cer charity, CUDECA. You will find a comprehensive article about this elsewhere in this week’s newspaper.

Three of June’s fundraising events are already sold out, including tomorrow’s Fun Quiz at Cerros de Águila, ‘The Lunch Bunch’ at Restaurante La Farola, Fuengirola on June 8 and a dinner/concert at Sa‐ fari Restaurant, Club La Costa World on June 24.

FASCINATING VILLAGE: Join the Mijas Walking Tours.

As well as supporting en‐ tertainers, venues and nomi‐ nated charities, there is a strong social element which acts as the ‘glue’ and this en‐ courages such excellent at‐ tendances.

A recent addition to the programme is The Breakfast Club, which aims to support the smaller cafes in the Mijas and Fuengirola areas. The next of these will be at Coast2Coast in Torreblanca, Fuengirola on June 17.

Driving Licence Exchange Extended THE deadline for British residents in Spain to exchange their driving licences for Spanish ones has been extended as the DGT has moved the deadline from June 30 to December 31, 2021.

“The DGT has also confirmed that both the green residence document and the TIE are valid proof of residence when com‐ pleting the exchange. ‘Votes for life’ for British citizens living in Spain

● British citizens who have moved abroad will be given ‘votes for life’ as the UK Gov‐ ernment scraps the arbitrary 15‐year limit on the voting rights ● New measures an‐ nounced on Thursday May 27 will also make it easier for overseas electors to remain registered to vote for longer. ● Together, these changes will empower more British cit‐ izens living overseas to partici‐ pate in the UK’s democracy.

New measures announced in the Queen’s Speech will make it easier for British citi‐ zens who have moved abroad to participate in British democracy.

Decisions made in the UK Parliament on foreign policy, defence, immigration, pen‐ sions and trade deals affect British citizens who live over‐ seas. It is therefore right that they have a say in UK Parlia‐ mentary General Elections.

On May 27 the Govern‐ ment was setting out further detail on plans to scrap the ar‐ bitrary rule that prevents British citizens from voting in General Elections if they have lived abroad for more than 15 years.

The changes, which will

form part of the Elections Bill, will also include measures to enable overseas electors to stay registered to vote for longer, with an absent voting arrangement in place.

The proposals fulfil a mani‐ festo commitment to deliver ‘votes for life’, extending the voting franchise for UK Parlia‐ mentary General Elections to all British citizens living over‐ seas who have been previous‐ ly registered or previously res‐ ident in the UK. These changes will come into effect in time for the next scheduled General Election in 2024.

In addition, new rules will mean overseas electors can stay registered for longer, in‐ cluding with an absent voting

arrangement in place, requir‐ ing them to renew their regis‐ tration details once every three years, rather than annu‐ ally.

Electors will be able to reapply for a postal vote or re‐ fresh their proxy vote at the same time as renewing their voter registration, streamlin‐ ing the process and helping to ensure overseas electors have appropriate voting arrange‐ ments in place ahead of an election.

The Government’s wider Elections Bill will also: im‐ prove access to voting for electors with disabilities; pre‐ vent foreign interference by hostile actors; tackle electoral fraud by post, proxy, in polling stations or through intimida‐ tion and undue influence; and increase transparency and ac‐ countability within our elec‐ tions.

Further announcements will be made on its measures ahead of the Bill’s introduc‐ tion.

UK Nationals living in Spain can also vote in local munici‐ pal elections in Spain once they have been resident here for more than three years.

Salaries disclosure Glasses can Detect Coronavirus in Seconds EMPLOYERS will have to disclose salaries to potential job candidates before they fix a date for an interview, according to proposals put forward by the European Commission.

Workers will also have the right to see pay scales broken down by position and gender in an effort to ensure pay transparency and end the practice of women being paid less for the same work.

The proposals will also end the practice of employers asking candidates what their previous salaries were and will empower employees who discover they are victims of pay discrimination to seek compensation.

The Commission’s proposals have been welcomed by Spain’s vice-president, Carmen Calvo, who said there was still a long way to go, “We have not achieved full equality.”

Airbus & Unions Extend ERTE EUROPEAN aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the unions have reached an agreement to extend the temporary employment regulation file (ERTE) in its Operations division in plants in Getafe (Madrid), Illescas (Toledo) and Puerto Real (Cádiz) until June 30.

The unions reported the extension of the ERTE, which ended on May 31, will now run from June 1 to June 30 , while the conditions and guaran‐ tees will be the same as those that have been applied since November.

On November 18, 2020, the company and the unions agreed to a six‐ month extension for the suspension of workers’ contracts until May 31 this year.

In this sense, during the time that the file did not last, it was agreed that the workers would receive 70 per cent of the base salary and seniority, without affecting their extra pay, vacations or variable remuneration.

Disabled Cyclist takes on Challenge DISABLED cyclist Álex Roca and extreme athlete Valentí Sanjuan took on the ‘Start your impos‐ sible’ challenge to cycle 700 kilometres in a bid to promote inclusion through sport. Álex who has cerebral palsy, took on the challenge with Valentí, to cycle the 700 kms in the space of only seven days as they travelled from Barcelona to Madrid where they deliv‐ ered the Olympic torch on May 31 to athletes who will take part in the Tokyo games.

Speaking of the challenge Valentí commented that: “Since we can’t take the torch to Tokyo, at least we took it from the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona to the athletes in Madrid who will compete in the Games.”

The two athletes feel that they made the perfect team together and travelled via tan‐ dem helping each other on the way and pushing each other to complete the challenge. Álex spoke of the challenge for his body and commented that: “For me and for my body, it’s a tough thing to do.” Álex has taken on many challenges including the Titan Desert, one of world’s toughest races and he has also completed the Barcelona half marathon. He went on to add that: “It was hard when they told me I had herpes in my brain and that I was going to die. And now nothing is impossible.”

Unemployment Fell In May THE number of unem‐ ployed registered in the public employment reg‐ isters (SEPE) decreased by 129,378 people in May, leaving the number of unemployed at 3,781,250, thus marking the largest drop in 20 years.

Jihadists Jailed For 2017 Attacks

THREE members of a jihadist cell responsible for attacks in Barcelona in 2017 in which 16 people died and more than 100 were injured were sentenced last week.

Mohamed Houli Chemlal, who is a Spanish citizen, and Driss Oukabir, a Moroccan citizen, received jail terms of 53 and 46 years respectively. Said Ben Iazza, also a Moroccan, will serve eight years for collaborating with a terrorist organisation.

Hoili and Oukabir were found guilty of belonging to a terrorist organisation, manufacturing explosives, attempted terrorist acts and 29 counts of grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutors had sought lighter sentences and were asking for 41 years for Houli and 36 years for Oukabir.

They will however not serve more than 20 years of their terms and their sentences can be appealed.

SIMPLY SURVIVING GROUP JOINS FORCES WITH CUDECA FOR JUNE SIMPLY SURVIVING GROUP was es‐ tablished at the start of the Covid‐19 pandemic by Val Williams, formerly President of Friends Of The Theatre Association, who has been fundrais‐ ing for worthy causes on the coast for over 30 years. She was worried about all the struggling businesses in the area and was concerned about the empty streets and closed premises in the Mijas and Fuengirola areas.

At first the group was purely Face‐ book based and anyone struggling to survive in business was encouraged to advertise at no cost. This proved very popular. Eventually she sought the help of popular local entrepeneur Alan Boardman to help evolve the idea.

As time progressed and the pan‐ demic restrictions were eased, Simply Surviving Group was in a position to give business to restaurants by en‐ couraging friends to meet for lunch and so the Lunch Brunch was formed and this too has proved very popular as it brings in much‐needed business to help the restaurants.

As well as this a monthly dinner and concert event is held and this helps the entertainers and venues badly hit by the pandemic. On each occasion al‐ most 100 people go along and enjoy excellent entertainment and a variety of cuisine. Finally, a Fun Quiz is held monthly and this attracts up to 80 people. A recent addition to the pro‐ gramme is The Breakfast Club which aims to support smaller cafes in the Mijas and Fuengirola areas.

Alan keeps himself busy giving his‐ torical walking tours of Mijas Pueblo which have proved very popular and the generous donations made by his grateful clients are passed on in full to Simply Surviving Group. With the prof‐ it from these events and other dona‐ tions, the group decided not only to help restaurants, entertainers and other businesses but also to under‐ take to help a different registered charity every month.

Iberian Lynx success THE number of Iberian lynx‐ es in the wild has rebound‐ ed after the native cat near‐ ly became extinct at the start of the century.

There are now 1,111 of them in what is seen as a major conservation success story.

The Environment Ministry said on May 28 that 414 cubs were born last year.

The race to save the lynx began in 2002 when the number of the wild cats na‐ tive to the Iberian Peninsu‐

New ITV (MOT) rules DRIVING your car on Spanish roads without a valid ITV (MOT) from the first of June 2021 could now carry a fine of €500, according to a report from the DGT. Driving without having an ITV or current insurance is con‐ sidered a serious or very seri‐ ous offence, depending on the

circumstances. According to the current law, not having the technical inspection up to date can entail a financial penalty of between €200 or €500, de‐ pending on the case.

This also includes cars parked in the garage or on the street without having carried out the technical inspection.

Hancock PPE Lies ALLEGEDLY Matt Hancock lied about PPE supplies at a coron‐ avirus meeting at No 10 which placed thousands of frontline healthcare workers at risk, according to a No 10 source.

Back in March 2020 Hancock had allegedly told Prime Min‐ ister Boris Johnson that much‐needed PPE supplies were headed for the NHS when in fact they were not. It is alleged that Hancock claimed that a PPE shipment containing masks and gowns coming in from China had been “sorted out and there was no problem,” but two weeks later the consignment had not arrived, as it was flashing on a Cabinet Room screen in red.

The PPE debacle had to be cleared up by Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Dominic Cummings is said to have become furious after having discovered that the much‐needed supply of PPE was arriving via boat rather than via plane.

Driving without insurance can attract a fine that varies from €601 to €3,005, depend‐ ing on the uninsured time and if the offence is repeated.

Continuing to use the vehicle despite it having serious de‐ fects, apart from taking it to a garage for repair in order to re‐ take the test, generates a fine of €200. In this case, the owner of the vehicle is obliged to re‐ pair the serious defects and re‐ turn to the ITV station, within a maximum period of two months, to verify the correc‐ tion of said defects.

Continuing to drive the vehi‐ cle with very serious defects through a no‐pass, carries a penalty of €500.

In these cases, the vehicle is not authorised to leave the ITV station by its own means, but will have to be transport‐ ed by a ‘grua’ to the garage for repairs and return to the ITV station, within a maximum pe‐ riod of two months, to check if the defects have been correct‐ ed.

Covid Vaccine Blood Clot Puzzle GERMAN scientists claim to have found the cause of the blood clots which have been linked to the Oxford/ A straZeneca and the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccines in rare cases. Not only do scientists believe they have found the cause of the

blood clots, they also believe that the vaccines can be altered in order to prevent the reactions happening too.

Rolf Marschalek, a professor at Goethe university in Frankfurt believes his research that he has been

working on since M arch could contain all the answers. He has been leading studies into the blood clot puzzle and believes that the problem comes from “the adenovirus vectors that both vaccines use to deliver the genetic instructions for the spike protein of the S ars- C ov-2 virus into the body.”

Both the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines for the potentially deadly coronavirus have been affected by the rare blood clotting side effect.

The German scientist has been contacted by Johnson & Johnson, and according to the scientist they are looking for ways to alter the vaccine. He explained that Johnson & Johnson: “is trying to optimise its vaccine now.”

“With the data we have in our hands we can tell the companies how to mutate these sequences, coding for the spike protein in a way that prevents unintended splice reactions.”

IT was just a few days ago that the rumour of the possible purchase of MGM Studios by Amazon began - it was even said that Apple was also interested in acquiring the studio behind franchises like James Bond and Rocky. Now, however, it’s official: Amazon has acquired MGM Studios for $8.45 - €6.93 billion This purchase indicates that Amazon

would be acquiring a catalogue of more than 4,000 movies and 17,000 television series, in order to give greater weight to the catalogue of originals that are in Prime Video.

Some of the franchises that will now also be under the arm of Amazon will be the Pink Panther, Rocky, Creed, The Handmaid’s Tale, and James Bond.

Ageing Population BY 2050 there will be two re‐ tirees for every three active workers making ageing one of the most serious demographic challenges facing Spain.

Between 2010 and 2060 the dependency ratio, the number of retirees compared to the num‐ ber of workers, will grow by 34 per cent.

This means Spain will experi‐ ence the greatest increase in the dependency ratio in Europe and by 2050 for every three people of working age, there will be almost two people over 65 years of age, a trend which will have a nega‐ tive economic and social impact, according to the Bank of Spain.

“We have never experienced an acceleration in the dependen‐ cy ratio of this type,” said Oscar Arce, the bank’s Director General of Economy and Statistics on Thursday May 27.

The trend will have will have an effect on consumption, invest‐ ment, employment, productivity, wages and prices, and also on the management of monetary and fiscal policies, he said at the

Covid contagions A MACRO-STUDY confirms that an asymptomatic person can be as contagious as a hospitalised patient. The largest study of viral load in Covid patients, with more than 25,000 participants, now confirms the decisive role of invisible super spreaders.

From the Charité Hospital in Berlin, Germany, the research shows that people infected with coronavirus reach their peak viral load in the throat between one and three days before the onset of symptoms. Some people become real virus spreaders without suspecting it.

According to the new study, a normal sample taken from the throat contains 2.5 million copies of the virus genome, but nearly 9 per cent of those infected have one billion copies or more.

The work confirms an explosive scenario: more than a third of patients with a very high viral load are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms. Given that the average age is 37, they are a highly mobile population.

The results have been published in the Journal Science www.sciencemag.org.

Stadium In Flames

REAL MADRID’S Bernabeu Stadium caught fire on Wednesday, May, 26, in the evening as smoke was spotted billowing out of the iconic ground as it undergoes construction work.

The historic stadium, which has been the home of Los Blancos since its completion in 1947, has a capacity of 81,044 ahead of current im‐ provements. The Bernabeu was the first stadium in Europe to host both a UEFA European Championship final and a FIFA World Cup final, having been named after the legendary striker Santiago Bernabeu.

Sizeable flames could be seen burning inside the stadium through one of the exposed parts of the construction and the images were shared on social media.

Madrid were granted permission to begin the major construction operation ‐ which is due to be completed for the start of the 2022‐23 season ‐ at the 73‐year‐old venue in March. Bizarrely, all the works will actually reduce the final capacity by one seat.

25 Million Doses surpassed SPAIN has surpassed 25 million doses of administered vaccines. In to‐ tal, 17.8 per cent of the population are now completely protected with the full regimen of two doses (8,434,233 people), and 36.2 per cent have received at least one dose (17,187,731 inhabitants).

The Ministry of Health has registered 5,007 new infections on May 26 and has added 54 deaths to the official count. Germany removes regions from risk list THE Spanish Embassy in Madrid announced that as from Sun‐ day May 30, at 00.00hr, German authorities removed the Spanish regions of Cantabria and Castilla‐La Mancha from their list of risk areas, which means that citizens of these two regions will not have to undergo mandatory coronavirus quarantine upon entering Germany.

This measure has been taken by the German authorities in response to results and data provided by the Rober Koch Insti‐ tute, which automatically records the weekly incidence in var‐ ious regions, and when it drops below 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, it relaxes the restrictions on access to Germany from those regions.

In the last few weeks, Germany has already removed the Spanish autonomous communities of the Balearic and the Ca‐ nary Islands, as well as more recently, Extremadura or As‐ turias, from their risk list, but other parts of Spain, including Andalucia, Aragon, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Madrid, Melilla, Navarra, the Basque Country, and La Rioja still remain on the list.

Renfe Connecting more Cities SPANISH train operator Renfe, has started to rebuild its services to different parts of Andalucia, out of its Sevilla base, with new timetables as from May 31.

With the recovery of these latest services, it means that Renfe will have gone back up to between 75 and 80 per cent of its pre‐pandemic timetable, with the new links to Cordoba, Granada, Malaga, and Cadiz.

Renfe’s Avant service will link Sevilla with the cities of Cordoba, Malaga, and Grana‐ da, adding a last‐minute ser‐ vice between Sevilla and Malaga as well, while its Me‐ dia Distancia will link up with Cadiz.

Trains will depart from Sevilla at 6.40, 8.30, 9.45, 10.45, 12.45, 14.45, 15.45, 16.45, 17.45, 20.10, and 21.50, while the Cadiz Bay depar‐ tures will be at 5.40, 6.30, 9.40, 11.40, 12.40, 14.40, 15.40, 17.40, 18.40, 19.40, and 20.40.

SOCIAL media giants, Facebook and Instagram, are giving users the option to hide public ‘likes’ on their posts.

The move though could scupper the influencer industry as likes are a key metric used to measure what impact influencers really have.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, has been testing the new feature since 2019. The company said the move would make the social media platforms “less stressful”.

“What we heard from people and experts was that not seeing like counts was beneficial for some and annoying to others, particularly because people use like counts to get a sense of what’s trending or popular, so we’re giving you the choice,” Facebook said in a blog post.

Actor Kevin Spacey’s new film SCANDAL hit actor Kevin Spacey plans to return to the big screen playing a policeman investigating a man wrongly accused of being a paedophile.

Spacey, who has been the subject of multiple sexual misconduct allegations, is to play a detective in Franco Nero’s film about a man wrongly suspected of being a child abuser.

The plot involves a blind artist, to be played by director Nero, who can draw people by listening to their voices, who is accused of abusing children. Vanessa Redgrave, who is married to Nero, will play his piano teacher.

Spacey dropped out of public view in 2017 when more than 20 men alleged sexual misconduct by the actor between 1995 and 2013. Spacey denies all accusations of misconduct.

Netflix dropped him from his starring role in House of Cards and his character in Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World was recast and his scenes reshot.

Valdes spoke of the country’s progress with the vaccination programme. He explained that: “Right now Spain is do‐ ing a great effort not only in terms of vaccination, we have at least one third of our whole population with at least one dose... but also, we do have some holiday desti‐ nations which are very loved

EIGHT bus drivers from Trans‐ portes Metropolitanos de Barcelona (TMB) who love diving left their vehicles for a

few hours to dive 100 metres out to sea in the bathing area of the Forum, with the aim of cleaning the seabed.

During the cleaning, the volunteers found some very curious items: City Hall fences, tyres, and even a mannequin. Of course, the main reason for doing it has been the masks. In fact, Ar‐ ribas assures that there were so many that they have only been able to get a small part.

BRUSSELS as the major home of the European Union has been warned to expect a significant shrinkage in occupied office space as the EU plans to reduce its footprint in the city by at least 25 per cent by 2030 with more people in fewer offices.

FINANCE BUSINESS EXTRA Billion Poundland THE Pepco Group which owns Britain’s Poundland as well as Dealz and Pepco in Spain has made its debut on the Warsaw Stock Exchange with an initial market capitalisation around €5 billion although shares jumped in price by 8 per cent on the first day of trading.

€1,000 limit THE Spanish government is determined to cut back on tax evasion and its latest law concerning fraud will lower the amount of cash that an individual can pay to any third party from €2,500 to €1,000. This was already in place for businesses.

TRG sold PRIVATE Equity company Miura Partners based in Barcelona has sold The Reefer Group (TRG), a company involved in the production and marketing of semi-trailers, trailers and refrigerated trucks in Alzira (Valencia) to a consortium of French investors led by the venture capital firm Amundi.

Hugo Boss GERMAN fashion group Hugo Boss became an international name after the end of the Second World War, although it was responsible for the design and production of clothes for the Nazi Party. The Fraser Group owned by Mike Ashley has now denied that it is planning a takeover.

Royal Household savings THANKS to the pandemic, the Spanish Royal Household didn’t spend €595,308 from its €8.5 million budget last year.

This information was reported by the Palace on May 27 as was explained by a reduction in the number of journeys made by the King and Queen both internally and internationally due to the lockdown in Spain and most other countries.

In addition, the annual payment to King Juan Carlos of €200,000 has been suspended by King Felipe VI due to his alleged hidden business dealings and Juan Carlos received just €42,000 for the year.

Spain targets South America SPEAKING in Madrid, Span‐ ish President Pedro Sánchez has confirmed that he wants the Spanish economy to expand through new and attractive export markets.

Considering the natural historic and linguistic links with Latin and South Ameri‐ ca, he made it clear that this was an area that he was particularly interested in and has vowed to invest up to €4.5 billion in order to in‐ crease Spain’s presence in that huge market.

Having recently received a visit from Argentine presi‐ dent, Alberto Fernández, he is about to reciprocate and will fly to both Argentina and Costa Rica from June 8 to 11 with the intention of starting the export ball rolling again following the pandemic.

Like the European Union but on a smaller scale, Mer‐ cosur, the Southern Com‐ mon Market, is a South American trade bloc estab‐ lished by the Treaty of

CHINESE President Xi Jinping had a half hour phone con‐ versation with Spanish Presi‐ dent Pedro Sánchez this week.

After asking Sánchez to convey his cordial greetings to King Felipe VI, he pointed out that China and Spain are important strategic partners and cooperation between the two is important.

He explained that the two sides should understand and support each other as China stands ready to work with Spain to expand bilateral trade, actively promote co‐ operation projects in such ar‐ eas as port logistics, smart cities and clean energy, strengthen third‐party coop‐ eration with Latin America and Africa.

Wealthiest football clubs €2.87 billion has knocked Manch‐ ester United into third place and the Red Devils worth €2.66 billion are down 20 per cent over the previous year.

There are no other Spanish teams in the top 10, but Liverpool come in at

fifth, Manchester City sixth, Chelsea seventh and Spurs ninth showing that the Premier League is without doubt the most valuable in Europe.

Arsenal have however dropped out of the rankings and the other places are made up by Bayern Munich, Paris

St German and Juventus.

There hasn’t been a huge amount of movement within the top 10 but in value the 32 clubs who were evaluat‐ ed have between them lost a mas‐ sive €6.1 billion at January 2021 when compared to January 2020.

Currency outlook: US dollar slumps on abysmal payroll reading, Pound surges amid easing political uncertainty

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.87 to £0.86 EUR/USD: Up from $1.20 to $1.22 An improving economic outlook in the Eurozone has been a key source of support for the euro over the past month.

This comes in response to the continued acceleration of the EU’s vaccine rollout as well as the reopening of more countries within the bloc.

This upside in the euro has also been supported by recent EUR data releases, which have been broadly positive and point to a strong rebound in economic activity in the second quarter. However, confirmation that the bloc suffered a double‐dip reces‐ sion over the winter ensured it wasn’t all plain sailing for the single currency.

Turning to June, we are likely to see the euro maintain its recent uptrend as the Eu‐ rozone’s economic prospects continue to improve.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.14 to €1.15 GBP/USD: Up from $1.38 to $1.41 The past month has seen the pound trend broadly higher, with the most no‐ table upswing in Sterling coming in re‐ sponse to reduced political uncertainty in the UK. This came after the Scottish National Par‐ ty failed to secure an outright majority in May’s election, reducing fears of an imme‐ diate independence referendum.

Also providing some lift to Sterling has been the reopening of more of the UK

economy and positive domestic data re‐ leases, although these gains have been tempered somewhat in the second half of May by UK coronavirus developments.

With the spread of the Indian variant of the coronavirus in the UK threatening to disrupt the government’s roadmap for eas‐ ing restrictions, domestic coronavirus headlines are likely to act as a key catalyst of movement in the pound in the weeks to come.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.72 to £0.70 USD/EUR: Down from €0.82 to €0.81 After fluctuating in late April in response to a dovish Federal Reserve policy state‐ ment and upbeat GDP figures, the US dollar experienced an aggressive selloff at the start of May following a startling miss in the latest US payroll reading.

A sharper‐than‐expected acceleration of domestic inflation in April helped the ‘Greenback’ to claw back some of its losses in the week that followed.

However, this upside in USD proved short lived, amidst expectations the Fed will continue to view the surge in inflation as ‘transitory’, as well as in the face of an increasingly upbeat global outlook, which has sapped safe‐haven demand.

Looking ahead, USD investors will likely be keeping a close eye on May’s payroll fig‐ ures, as another underwhelming reading will likely keep the pressure on the US dol‐ lar and validate the Fed’s current dovish bias.

So bitter and biased

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHAT an arrogant and highly predictable organisation the BBC actually are. When Dominic Cummings made his now infamous and highly illegal ‘Durham dash,’ during lockdown in March of last year, the media, especially the BBC, made an enormous hue and cry, accusing him of being a blatant liar and baying for his resignation.

In the light of his recent unsubstantiated accusations against the government, the BBC has revelled in his statements, treating them all as though they were gospel truth and truly making a meal out of every ‘fact’ that has spilled from the lips of this obnoxious individual, who is obviously so bitter and biased towards his former employers he would swear they were hatching a plot to put everyone in a onesie and stick a chip in their heads if he thought he could get away with it.

The BBC has of course also used the whole unsavoury incident to somehow divert the public’s attention from the Martin Bashir interview with Lady Diana, now proven to have been

obtained by stealth and the falsifying of bank documents. In their usual ‘damage control’ mode they have symbolically begun to sever the heads of a few initial scapegoats and minions involved. Tony Hall, who was head of the BBC at the time, has resigned from his position on the board of The

National Gallery, a gesture which means just about zilch.

Bashir has stepped down citing ‘health reasons’ and to date that has been the sum total of their retributions.

Will they reach the top? Don’t hold yer breath. I dread to think of the phone calls, text messages and shady

meetings that have taken place among the hierarchy, as they scrambled to cover their backs in their undoubted panic to exonerate themselves from the whole seedy exercise.

Well, I maintain Tim Davie and the whole rotten biased bunch of them should be unceremoniously weeded

out and dumped somewhere nasty.

Why should the British taxpayer have to shell out for a load of well‐heeled manipulators, who are the hypocritical purveyors of left wing propaganda and Political Correctness which, if they have their way (heaven forbid) will ultimately put the UK under the jurisdiction of the Labour party at the next election?

I suppose it’s a complete coincidence that the new strain of Indian Covid happened to manifest two to three weeks after the return of the thousands of ethnic minorities who were allowed to visit Pakistan and India to celebrate the Ramadan and Eid festivals?

I also understand that a further nightmare that is threatening journalist and newscasters all over the world is yet another new variant which is thought to have originated in Wales and will henceforth be known as the Llanfaipwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrob wlllantysiliogogogoch Strain! Just kidding. See ya.

So, what if you just want to spend 90 days in a 180‐day period? Well, nothing has changed, you can buy a property, a car, have a mobile phone contract, life just continues as it did before the UK left the European Union.

However, some people are rightly concerned about the tax, property ex‐ penses and security issues with their Spanish property being left unattended for six months of the year. What is the solution? I am old enough to remem‐ ber timeshare here in Spain, the solu‐ tion is not the timeshare you may have heard of. Rather two or more people

buy a property in Spain and form a mini community with rules. That way your property can be occupied all year round and share costs.

Basically, if all the owners agree then you can enjoy your property as you wish. So, has the infamous timeshare returned? Most certainly not, maybe the best name for it is private co‐owner‐

IN the latest diversity drive, Rugby chiefs have scrapped using the ‘inappropriate’ nickname ‘Saxons’ for England’s second team which will revert to the name ‘England A’ after 15 years of being branded as the England Saxons. This in the wake of the RFU’s decision to distance itself from ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,’ the slave spiritual adopted as a terrace anthem by England rugby supporters.

What is wrong with these people? Are we going to force Sussex (South Saxons) and Essex (East Saxons) to change the names of their counties because the name doesn’t describe the people who live there or discriminates against residents who can’t trace their ances‐ try to the Saxons? The RFU does realise that England derives from the land of the Angles, right?

Yes, rugby may need to be more inclusive but a mindless name change won’t help. This is

ANGLO SAXONS: Why should we be ashamed of our history? just more absurd and pointless ‘wokery’ on steroids. Saxons are part of our history so why should we be ashamed of their cultural impact, and how does the name ‘Saxon’ stop non‐ white people from playing rugby? The corollary being we should maybe scrap using the word

‘England’, because presumably that name will trigger some with its associations with Empire and being white British?

Maybe, too, we should refrain from any competitive sport as it will hurt the feelings of the loser. The alternative is to withdraw players

For a more dramatic transformation, go for opaque coloured lenses. These will hide your natural eye colour and give you the freedom to go wild and really draw attention to yourself. Eyelash errors WHILST false eyelashes can create a more dramatic look, if applied incorrectly they can also have the opposite effect. Nobody is born with an innate professional knowledge about how to apply these, so the important thing is to be aware of the basic errors and then avoid them.

Once you’ve opened them up, don’t presume that your false eyelashes are the correct length for your eyes.

You may need to cut them slightly so that they fit correctly. Then, once you’ve applied the application glue, wait at least 30 seconds before you apply the eyelashes. This gives the glue time to harden and get sticky and avoids the issue of the eyelash moving around. B e very careful where you apply the eyelashes. D on’t leave them much above the line of your natural lash.

A nd remember, simply because you have bought single-use eye lashes doesn’t mean that you can only use them once. As long as they’re in good condition, there’s no reason for you not to use them a couple of times. Just be sure to clean them and maintain their shape. But be extra attentive to make sure that you can’t see any glue residue from their previous use.

Hot in heels

WALKING PROUD: If you decide to don high heels remember to keep your chin raised.

HIGH heels can be a woman’s - or a man’s - best friend.

They can make the person wearing them look taller and more confident. But to walk in them successfully, you’ll need to adopt these few simple steps.

You will notice that high heels tend to shorten your stride. Don’t fight against this, take small and slow steps. The higher the heel, the shorter your stride will be. Also, don’t bend your knees any more than you normally would.

When walking with heels, walk from heel to toe then slide your weight forward as if you were walking on tiptoe, and take the next step. It can be difficult to maintain posture and keep straight when walking in heels. So, toss your shoulders back and align your head with your spine, keeping your chin parallel to the ground. Also, keep your legs together as much as possible. Many people who chose to wear high heels do so to be more sensual, so it may be good to cross one foot in front of the other and add a little more hip movement. You can achieve this by walking on an imaginary invisible straight line. But remember, no matter how beautiful you and your heels are, don’t don them all the time. Wearing high heels too often can cause chronic foot and back pain.

2. Apply heat ‐ don’t add more heat to inflammation! An ice pack will cool and numb it, helping you be more comfortable.

3. Don’t lift weight (or other activity limits) ‐ NONSENSE! Maybe not today but gentle, gradual increases in movement and load help build strong muscles and bones.

4. Injections ‐ steroid injections can be a wonderful emergency, short term pain re‐ lief. But long term they break down joints.

They are painkillers NOT treatment.

5. Relying on MRI scans/X‐rays ‐ more and more evidence shows that scans aren’t useful for diagnosis of musculoskeletal pain.

6. Surgery helps ‐ many surgical proce‐ dures have a success rate lower than place‐ bo. But with a HUGE amount of risk. There are better options!

Now that the Covid‐19 pan‐ demic appears to be under con‐ trol, it is a good idea to try and support many local businesses by ordering online and making use of any click and collect services they can operate, especially if you are unable to get out due to health reasons or any other restrictions.

The joy of shopping local means that independent busi‐ nesses can help support the local community.

Although it may be a euro or two cheaper elsewhere or online, consider where your money is ac‐ tually going.

By shopping at an independent store you’re putting food on a lo‐ cal family’s table, and there is no better time than now to give back to your community by making a small gesture and shopping in this way.

Many local stores support local charities, support and sponsor lo‐ cal sports teams and in many cas‐ es the small independent stores are actually much more than just a small high street shop, they’re a family’s legacy, often passed down through numerous genera‐ tions and support not just the cur‐ rent owner but the generation be‐ fore. For those stores which are new, that extra couple of euros spent there are supporting some‐ one’s dream and ambition, and al‐ so the courage it took them to step out alone, which is no easy task. It takes quite a large chunk of money to set up an independent store and compete with the multi‐ national and chains.

So be sure to pre‐order your meat from a local butcher and get your spuds from a local greengro‐

cer, let us revive that community spirit and get to know our neigh‐ bours again.

You could also consider pur‐ chasing gift vouchers from local businesses to help them over the coming weeks, thinking outside the box can often lead to some fantastic ideas. Why not buy a meal for two, an hour’s tattoo time at a local studio, a hair cut at a local salon or an online study course for someone looking to change their career path.

As people are struggling with fi‐ nances thinking about what friends and family may actually need is important too. Whilst it’s nice to give a glamourous gift per‐ haps pre‐paying a family mem‐ ber’s phone bill for the month would actually be a better gift.

Helping people alleviate stress and worry, give the gift of peace of mind through these difficult times.

Choosing to spend your money locally will really make a difference in the recovery of the local econo‐ my. When we buy local, our mon‐ ey stays local, and it strengthens

the local economy in two ways. First, buying local keeps money circulat‐ ing within the local economy.

Money circulating through the local economy benefits everyone who is a part of each transaction.

For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce.

First, they sell to a local restau‐ rant, which in turn prepares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its lo‐ cal employees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbourhood hardware store. This example il‐ lustrates how the recirculation of money in the local economy leads to a stronger financial foundation for our neighbours and communi‐ ties.

Buying local also fuels new em‐ ployment and job opportunities for people within our community.

BY NICOLE KING EVEN though I’m heading up the #zero‐ hero incentive I have realised that there have been a couple of times I didn’t think about my alcohol level before driving home.

In my case, as with many others, just one glass of wine will be enough to put me over the limit and potentially carry a punishment, if stopped.

The permitted alcohol levels in Spain are far less than in the UK and not only can we get a fine but also lose serious points on our driving licence. That is a better scenario though than someone getting hurt as a consequence of our im‐ prudence.

It’s precisely when we’re in a booze as‐ sisted good mood that we can get so caught up in the moment that this hap‐ pens, so having a little reminder might not stop everyone, but it might remind a few.

DAVID WORBOYS PUCCINI’S operas are among the high‐ est form of art and I personally find them sublime, along with some of the works of Donizetti, Bellini and Gior‐ dano. However, the towering com‐ posers of opera are considered to be Verdi (Italian) and Wagner (German).

Much as I love Puccini, I would not ar‐ gue with the global assessment by those closely involved. However, just a few days ago, a slightly intoxicated Lon‐ doner assured me that “Puccini will al‐ ways live in the shadow of Verdi.”

But how can such wonderful music be in the shadow of anything? Are Haydn and Mozart ‘in the shadow’ of Beethoven? Are Murillo and El Greco ‘in the shadow’ of Velazquez? Surely not.

In many walks of life and over several centuries, the scrutiny of experts and common opinion have given us clear ‘front‐runners’. But those who really live in their shadows are usually those whose obscurity is the result of a far lower level of talent.

Among athletes, Muhammed Ali was widely declared the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT). But how can a boxer, however

Darwin seems to have succeeded in pushing Alfred Russel Wallace into the shadows through alleged plagiarism.

Darwin is much more celebrated than Wallace, although it was probably the latter that developed the original theory of evolution. George Stephenson intro‐

So, when I next hear an aria from La Boheme or Madama But‐ terfly, Tosca or Turandot, it will not en‐ ter my head that Verdi is held in higher esteem by a majority of aficionados.

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’V E been watching and reading stuff about Prince Harry and Prince Charles and it seems to me that Harry has decided that his dad wasn’t a great dad as far as being a good role model.

Harry has been getting some stick for it too but I actually get where he is coming from, after all, Charles’ treatment of Harry’s mum was disgusting. All through their courtship and marriage Charles was having an affair with Camila and was just using Princess Diana to knock out an heir and a spare. Everybody in the Royal Family knew and it looked like it was quite acceptable. So it’s not surprising that when Harry got older there was resentment for his father and ‘The Firm’ for their treatment of his mum, and in his opinion, towards Harry’s wife too.

It reminds me a bit of Bobby Moore. I knew his son Dean pretty well until his death some years ago. Dean was a troubled soul and one day we were talking about how it was being the son of an En-

glish legend and hero. Wherever he went he was introduced as Bobby’s son. He saw statues of his dad and everybody said how much they loved him and what a great man he was. But Dean had a slightly different view because, apart from remembering what a great footballer he was, Dean’s memory was that he was the man that cheated on his mum with another woman and wrecked his home life.

But, of course, no-one ever realised how that messed up Dean’s life and, in the end, actually cost him his life too.

On a different subject I was parking my car the other day and the only space available was hard to get into because the car next to me had parked so badly. Its back end was over the white line which meant that my car had to go over the white line on the other side. The thing is that when I got back the offending car had gone which left mine looking like I had parked badly. I knew it wasn’t my fault and I felt like shouting out ‘It’s not my fault, I was forced to park like this.’

It’s a bit like when you come out of the loo on an aeroplane when someone hasn’t cleaned up properly and you want to say to the next person that it wasn’t your mess! No-one believes you.

by Mark Slack THE French have a reputa‐ tion for some rather ad‐ vanced mechanical design as well as a certain aesthetic flair. Renault have an addi‐ tional automotive string to their bow in F1 racing, and especially with the new Team Alpine where hopes for success are high.

Success is very evident in the latest Megane Sport Tourer. Despite the rebrand‐ ing of es‐ tates as

Prices for the range start from €27,304 (£23,500) but in the case of my RS‐Line

Plug‐in hybrid it’s a some‐ what hefty €38,336 (£32,995). That’s a near €6,971 (£6,000) premium over the nearest pure petrol stablemate, but the Plug‐in hybrid develops an extra 20hp and carries additional features including that plug‐ in capability.

Most plug‐in hybrids

have a short pure electric range, being designed for the daily commute. Typically, they recharge in less time be‐ cause of the smaller capacity battery and most important‐ ly there are no range con‐ cerns as you have, in the Megane’s case, a 1.6‐litre petrol engine to back you up.

There’s a pretty decent all‐ electric range of around 30 miles which is enough for a modest daily commute. As ever a home charger

is essential to get the best from the car’s electric power.

The interior of the Megane has an air of quality, much improved of late, and there’s a decent size touchscreen built into the fascia, no ‘bolt‐ on iPad’ look here. It really is a very nice place to be ac‐ commodated. Unlike so many cars the digitalisation is at a sensible level ‐ rivals please take note ‐ and there’s a choice of driving modes to make the most of the hybrid options.

On the road there’s plenty of power for quick getaways and overtakes and it’s mostly carried out in a serene and audibly calm atmosphere.

There’s a slightly sporty edge but this is no traffic light grand prix car or point‐to‐ point racer, but it acquits it‐ self well soaking up bumps and undulations on our roads along the way.

All‐in‐all this is a very ac‐ complished car, lots of stan‐ dard equipment and the look and feel of a quality build.

The hybrid element adds to the potential practicality but at its price there’s some stiff competition from more pre‐ mium badges. That said I would still very happily have kept hold of this one.
