An electrifying situation

BEDAR is opposing a high‐voltage powerline causing potential dam‐ age to the environment.

Plans show that the powerline goes straight through the protect‐ ed conservation area, crossing the well‐known Bedar mining route and destroying the scenic appeal of the village and adjoining areas.

The proposed line also goes across populated areas, raising ques‐ tions about health hazards, as some homes are just 50 metres from it. Along with Bedar Town Hall, residents fighting the plans have formed an association to try to move the powerline away from pro‐ tected land and historic sites. The proposed power station in Antas would be very near the Ermita de la Virgen de la Cabeza and will be the size of five football fields. The aim is to move this power station, cables and towers towards Ballabona station along the motorway.

90 Pairs Fake Designer Trainers A 40-YEAR-OLD man has been caught with 90 pairs of fake designer trainers.

Nijar’s Guardia Civil have now charged him for a crime against industrial property, as he was unable to provide any documentation to prove that he had legally bought them.

Officers first noticed the man when he was

driving and turned onto a slip road after he spotted them. His evasive tactics were un‐ successful and they soon caught up with him and proceeded to search the vehicle, discov‐ ering the fake trainers from leading sports brands. A Roquetas de Mar resident, his case is now in the hands of the Almeria courts.

Search for swimmer THE search continued for a 23‐year‐old from Nijar who disap‐ peared while swimming at San Miguel beach.

The swimmer was initially missed just after midday last week near Almeria’s Cabo de Gata‐Nijar. The search was re‐ sumed two days later in the area between Almeria City’s Za‐ pillo beach and La Fabriquilla in Cabo de Gata..

A maritime rescue vessel and a helicopter were activated to help find him, assisted by the Guardia Specialist Underwater Activities Group (GEAS) while beaches were also searched by officers on foot.

The young man, said to be a strong swimmer, is believed to have gone missing after heading into the sea while visiting the beach with a friend who remained on the shore. He lost sight of him while he was checking his mobile phone, he later ex‐ plained.

The poster for the festivities in honour of the town’s Patron, the Virgen de las Angustias is the work of Vera designer Javier Carmona.

“It is a portrait of the Patron composed of images of devo‐ tees of the Virgin and residents who wanted to be part of the design and sent their photos,” Carmona explained.

“The people of Vera are the real protagonists together with our Patron.” Many local families sent in their photographs for inclusion in the poster and both the local town council and the Brotherhood of the Virgen de las Angustias thanked them for the wonderful response.

“This is a very special year, where we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel and our lives are gradually re‐ turning to normal,” Fiestas councillor Amparo García said.

An expensive party AN Albox woman lost more than €1,000 after her bank card and PIN number were stolen at a party.

The Guardia Civil launched an investiga‐ tion when the victim lodged an official com‐ plaint after €1,000 dis‐ appeared from her bank account following a par‐ ty attended by several people at her house.

Their enquiry focused on a couple who were present at the party. The woman is thought to have known the location of the missing bank card as she had previously cleaned the house on several occasions.

Officers discovered that her boyfriend had learnt the bank details and then passed them on to a friend who with‐ drew the cash from the ATM. The two men aged 39 and 33 allegedly in‐ volved in the theft were eventually arrested after the investigators were able to identify one of them from the bank’s CCTV footage.

A Pulpi musical winner SPAIN did after all win a Song Contest this year, thanks to Laura Diepstraten Garcia from Pulpi.

Fourteen-year-old Laura was the winner of the first edition of the International Low Vision Song Contest for the visually-impaired, competing with 16 other contestants with Otra vision (Another outlook) which she wrote and performed.

Church repairs underway WORK has begun on renovating Cuevas del Almanzora’s 18th century Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacion church.

The Cuevas church is the province’s sec‐ ond‐largest after Almeria City cathedral and much‐needed restoration is needed not only on religious grounds but owing to the build‐ ing’s historic, aesthetic and cultural value.

Renovations involve repairing the roof, eliminating dampness at ground level while retaining all of the church’s artistic and cul‐ tural features.

Cuevas Town Hall is spending €250,000 on this first phase of the restoration project, revealed Maria Isabel Ponce, Culture and Tourism councillor.

Mojacar’s road to nowhere MOJACAR residents will demonstrate peacefully in Plaza del Ayuntamiento outside the town hall at noon on Thursday June 10.

They will call on the local government and the Junta de Andalucia “to make common sense prevail” regard‐ ing the Mojacar Beach bypass, longstanding Mojacar resident Ger‐ ard Visser explained to the Euro Weekly News.

At present the only alternative to the beach road is a nar‐ row tarmacked coun‐ try road with many blind spots and the town hall wants to connect Mojacar and Carboneras with a fast inter‐urban road through the Las Mari‐ nas area.

Only two kilometres would be constructed, stopping short at the La Parata road and ending in a residential area at a roundabout connecting to the four‐ metre wide country road.

With high embank‐ ments, landfills and metal guardrails it would create a 20‐me‐ tre barrier in some places with residents only able to access this ‘monster’ via three roundabouts and 1,317 metres of slip roads.

The whole project will deplete town hall funds by between €8 and €10 million de‐ spite appeals from Las Marinas residents who suggest widening the existing Camino de las Marinas at a fraction of the cost.

“Unfortunately, so far their suggestions have fallen on deaf ears,” Mr Visser said.

Meanwhile, over 200 signatures oppos‐ ing the project were collected in just a few days, he added.

Please sterilise your cats!

THE cute kittens in the photo accompanying this article would be dead if PAWS-PATAS had not taken them in. “Please, please, please stop leaving very young kittens at our shelter gates,” begged Chrissie Cremore, the Los Gallardos animal shelter’s acting vice-president.

“We are at breaking point and cannot give them all the love and attention they need,” she said. “Nor do we have the space to accommodate them all.” Chrissie told the Euro Weekly News that 32 kittens had been abandoned in the previous three weeks, as well as others that PAWS-PATAS has arranged to help.

Aged between four and eight weeks, most were snatched from their mothers, crowded into a box or carrier and left at the shelter gates in the early hours of the morning.

“They are incredibly stressed, cold and often dehydrated, riddled with parasites and semi-feral,” Chrissie said. “Some have health issues that will take many weeks to overcome.”

The PAWS-PATAS cattery’s facilities are small,

and they have been forced to put the latest batch of kittens into caravans which normally accommodate overseas volunteers.

“Please sterilise your cats! If you need help to do this, we can assist,” declared PAWS-PATAS committee member Babs Williams.

“We will do all we can to stop this endless stream of unwanted kittens being born, but we also need your help to do this. We have actively helped to Trap, Neuter and Return 232 feral and colony cats in the last four months and will continue our TNR campaign as long as our funds allow.” PAWS-PATAS receives no statutory funding, so donations are greatly needed to help them stop more kittens being born.

“As always we are in desperate need of more volunteers,” Chrissie said. “Can you spare a few hours per week? It would make a massive difference to us as we are at breaking point.

David’s 1km for Charity AFTER a horrendous accident Dave Bowen is learning to walk again. On Friday night (May 28), he walked one kilometre unaided for the Walk for Life challenge.

Dozens of his friends and neighbours came out to cheer him on. Despite falling at one point he insisted on carrying on to complete the distance. His determination is incredible, well done and thank you from The Walk for Life team.

Community services plan THE Almeria Provincial Council presented its sixth Community Services Plan on Monday May 31, which they say is the most ambitious in its history.

“This document is the provincial roadmap to meet the needs, in terms of social welfare, of the families of the 97 municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants,” as per the statement re‐ leased on Sunday May 30.

The plan aims to improve the quality of life of the people of Almeria with social care and the plan includes actions for promotion, integration, participation, innovation, and social cooperation throughout the province.

It will also include a second edition of the ‘Conti‐ go’ Programme to help the most vulnerable peo‐ ple in the face of the pandemic and advance care for the elderly by promoting personal autonomy.

Almeria To Sevilla FLIGHTS between Almeria and Sevilla, have now started from June 1, and

The government stated that it is a “priority” to re‐ cover mobility and connec‐ t i v i t y “ a s s o o n a s p o s s i‐ ble”, but are also eager to point out that the current demand for this flight does not allow for the return to the original routine of daily flights between the two cities that was in operation prior to the pandemic, but said this current adjust‐ ment is aimed at “guaran‐ teeing the continuity of services”, which it does “in close coordination with the Junta de Andalucia”.

EMPLOYERS will have to disclose salaries to potential job candidates before they fix a date for an interview, according to proposals put forward by the European Commission.

Workers will also have the right to see pay scales broken down by position and gender in an effort to ensure pay transparency and end the practice of women being paid less for the same work.

He went on to add that: “It was hard when they told me I had her‐ pes in my brain and that I was going to die. And now nothing is impossible.”

easyJet Issues Statement EASYJET were forced to issue a statement fol‐ lowing claims that the ‘majority’ of its flights are now being cancelled. The statement comes amidst thousands of Brits get their hopes up about flying away on holiday this summer.

With a number of countries now on the green list, meaning travellers won’t have to quarantine when they return home, many are being left con‐ fused and disappointed.

A verified easyJet account Tweeted on May 27, “The majority of our flights are being cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. Flights will continue to be reviewed. We continue to review our sched‐ ule and will make amends where we can in order to reflect the changes in demand and restrictions.”

Sanchez’s Helicopter Ride PRESIDENT Pedro Sanchez and two senior ministers have been trounced by Spanish media outlets for using a helicopter to travel to a green energy event in Toledo after announcing Spain would end short flights.

Iberian Lynx success THE number of Iberian lynx‐ es in the wild has rebound‐ ed after the native cat near‐ ly became extinct at the start of the century.

There are now 1,111 of them in what is seen as a major conservation success story.

The Environment Ministry said on May 28 that 414 cubs were born last year.

The race to save the lynx began in 2002 when the number of the wild cats na‐ tive to the Iberian Peninsu‐

New ITV (MOT) rules DRIVING your car on Spanish roads without a valid ITV (MOT) from the first of June 2021 could now carry a fine of €500, according to a report from the DGT. Driving without having an ITV or current insurance is con‐ sidered a serious or very seri‐ ous offence, depending on the

circumstances. According to the current law, not having the technical inspection up to date can entail a financial penalty of between €200 or €500, de‐ pending on the case.

This also includes cars parked in the garage or on the street without having carried out the technical inspection.

Hancock PPE Lies ALLEGEDLY Matt Hancock lied about PPE supplies at a coron‐ avirus meeting at No 10 which placed thousands of frontline healthcare workers at risk, according to a No 10 source.

Back in March 2020 Hancock had allegedly told Prime Min‐ ister Boris Johnson that much‐needed PPE supplies were headed for the NHS when in fact they were not. It is alleged that Hancock claimed that a PPE shipment containing masks and gowns coming in from China had been “sorted out and there was no problem,” but two weeks later the consignment had not arrived, as it was flashing on a Cabinet Room screen in red.

The PPE debacle had to be cleared up by Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Dominic Cummings is said to have become furious after having discovered that the much‐needed supply of PPE was arriving via boat rather than via plane.

Driving without insurance can attract a fine that varies from €601 to €3,005, depend‐ ing on the uninsured time and if the offence is repeated.

In this case, the owner of the vehicle is obliged to re‐ pair the serious defects and re‐ turn to the ITV station, within a maximum period of two months, to verify the correc‐ tion of said defects.

Continuing to drive the vehi‐ cle with very serious defects through a no‐pass, carries a penalty of €500.

In these cases, the vehicle is not authorised to leave the ITV station by its own means, but will have to be transport‐ ed by a ‘grua’ to the garage for repairs and return to the ITV station, within a maximum pe‐ riod of two months, to check if the defects have been correct‐ ed.

Campaign To Lower prices THE draft proposal was presented on Tuesday June 1 to the Council of Ministers and may reduce the price of electricity bills by as much as 5 per cent.

tion that companies get for electricity produced by their gas and nuclear plants.

The law is part of the government agreement signed by the parties of the Unidas Podemos and PSOE. However, it is not until now that, in the midst of escalating electricity prices, Teresa Ribera has brought the matter to the attention of the Council of Ministers.

“The government is concerned about the impact of the price of Co2 [carbon dioxide] on the price of electricity and its possible consequences on the recovery of the domestic and industrial economies,” sources from the team of Vice President Teresa Rivera said.

The idea is that if people are encouraged to use electricity at times of less demand, it will reduce the need to invest in infrastructure for the transmission and distribution of electric supply, and in turn allow them to save on their bills because these investments are paid for by consumers.

‘Votes for life’ for British citizens living in Spain ● British citizens who have moved abroad will be given ‘votes for life’ as the UK Gov‐ ernment scraps the arbitrary 15‐year limit on the voting rights ● New measures announced on Thursday May 27 will also make it easier for overseas electors to remain registered to vote for longer. ● Together, these changes will empower more British citi‐ zens living overseas to partici‐ pate in the UK’s democracy.

New measures announced in the Queen’s Speech will make it easier for British citi‐ zens who have moved abroad to participate in British democ‐ racy.

Decisions made in the UK Parliament on foreign policy, defence, immigration, pensions and trade deals affect British citizens who live overseas. It is therefore right that they have a say in UK Parliamentary Gener‐ al Elections.

On May 27 the Government was setting out further detail on plans to scrap the arbitrary rule that prevents British citi‐ zens from voting in General Elections if they have lived abroad for more than 15 years.

The changes, which will form part of the Elections Bill, will al‐ so include measures to enable overseas electors to stay regis‐ tered to vote for longer, with an absent voting arrangement in place.

These changes will come into effect in time for the next scheduled General Election in 2024.

Electors will be able to reap‐ ply for a postal vote or refresh their proxy vote at the same time as renewing their voter registration, streamlining the process and helping to ensure overseas electors have appro‐ priate voting arrangements in place ahead of an election.

The Government’s wider Elections Bill will also: improve access to voting for electors with disabilities; prevent for‐ eign interference by hostile ac‐ tors; tackle electoral fraud by post, proxy, in polling stations or through intimidation and undue influence; and increase transparency and accountabili‐ ty within our elections.

Further announcements will be made on its measures ahead of the Bill’s introduction.

Jihadists Jailed For 2017 Attacks

THREE members of a jihadist cell responsible for attacks in Barcelona in 2017 in which 16 people died and more than 100 were injured were sentenced last week.

Mohamed Houli Chemlal, who is a Spanish citizen, and Driss Oukabir, a Moroccan citizen, received jail terms of 53 and 46 years respectively. Said Ben Iazza, also a Moroccan, will serve eight years for collaborating with a terrorist organisation.

Hoili and Oukabir were found guilty of belonging to a terrorist organisation, manufacturing explosives, attempted terrorist acts and 29 counts of grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutors had sought lighter sentences and were asking for 41 years for Houli and 36 years for Oukabir.

They will however not serve more than 20 years of their terms and their sentences can be appealed.

BY 2050 there will be two re‐ tirees for every three active workers making ageing one of the most serious demograph‐ ic challenges facing Spain.

Between 2010 and 2060 the dependency ratio, the

number of retirees compared to the number of workers, will grow by 34 per cent.

This means Spain will expe‐ rience the greatest increase in the dependency ratio in Eu‐ rope and by 2050 for every three people of working age, there will be almost two peo‐ ple over 65 years of age, a trend which will have a nega‐ tive economic and social im‐ pact, according to the Bank of Spain.

“We have never experi‐ enced an acceleration in the dependency ratio of this type,” said Oscar Arce, the bank’s Director General of Economy and Statistics on Thursday May 27.

The trend will have will have an effect on consump‐ tion, investment, employ‐ ment, productivity, wages and prices, and also on the management of monetary and fiscal policies, he said at the first ‘Forum on Ageing Age and Life: Repercussions of ageing in the Spanish econ‐ omy.’

Covid contagions A MACRO-STUDY confirms that an asymptomatic person can be as contagious as a hospitalised patient. The largest study of viral load in Covid patients, with more than 25,000 participants, now confirms the decisive role of invisible super spreaders.

From the Charité Hospital in Berlin, Germany, the research shows that people infected with coronavirus reach their peak viral load in the throat between one and three days before the onset of symptoms. Some people become real virus spreaders without suspecting it.

According to the new study, a normal sample taken from the throat contains 2.5 million copies of the virus genome, but nearly 9 per cent of those infected have one billion copies or more.

The work confirms an explosive scenario: more than a third of patients with a very high viral load are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms. Given that the average age is 37, they are a highly mobile population.

The results have been published in the Journal Science www.sciencemag.org.

Farm Workers Still Waiting To Be Vaccinated DOZENS of farmworkers in Spain are awaiting their turn to be vaccinated by a team of nurses against the coronavirus. With Spain being the main provider of fresh fruit and vegetables to the rest of Europe, it is now a race against time to immunise the army of cheap labourers on farms as harvest season looms.

The outbreaks of Covid among farmworkers in the north eastern regions of Aragon and Catalonia last year come as a stark warning and the aim is to

prevent a repeat of these outbreaks that fuelled a spike in infections and led to localised lockdowns.

Jordi Janes, the mayor of Alcarras, said: “We had a really rough time last year. Municipalities were locked down, fruit packing stations were closed due to the Covid cases.

“This gives us peace of mind,” he added, as he was standing outside of the vaccination centre which has been set up in the town’s school to vacci‐ nate approximately 400 agribusiness workers.

With the recovery of these latest services, it means that Renfe will have gone back up to between 75 and 80 per cent of its pre‐pandemic timetable, with the new links to Cordo‐ ba, Granada, Malaga, and Cadiz.

Renfe’s Avant service will link Sevilla with the cities of Cor‐ doba, Malaga, and Granada, adding a last‐minute service be‐ tween Sevilla and Malaga as well, while its Media Distancia will link up with Cadiz.

WhatsApp Privacy Update Policy EARLIER this month, the owners of WhatsApp, FaceBook, said that users would lose functionality over time if they decided not to accept its new privacy policy by May 15. In a reversal of the decision, Facebook now says that plan has changed, and users who don’t accept the updated policy actually will NOT see limit‐ ed functionality.

Hundred of thousands of users left WhatsApp upon hearing the news that they may remove the free messaging functionality and moved to the Telegram app. Although many have returned to WhatsApp, thousands have remained with the platform’s main competition.

“Given recent discussions with various authorities and privacy experts, we want to make clear that we will not limit the function‐ ality of how WhatsApp works for those who have not yet accept‐ ed the update,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement who added that this is now the plan moving forward indefinitely.

All in all, the rollout of the policy has been a confusing mess and raised concerns that WhatsApp would begin sharing more of users’ personal data with Facebook. (Some WhatsApp user data, such as users’ phone numbers, is already shared with Facebook, a policy that went into place in 2016.)

WhatsApp however, has stressed this is not the case, though ‐ the policy update is regarding messages sent to businesses via WhatsApp, which may be stored on Facebook’s servers.

Backlash for Postal Service CORREOS is the state‐owned postal service in Spain and they recently issued a series of stamps in a bid to fight racism.

They issued four stamps in dif‐ ferent skin tone colours, all with different prices.

Correos called them equality stamps and they were released on the anniversary of George Floyd’s death. George was hor‐ rifically killed by a Minneapolis police officer.

The Spanish postal service be‐ lieves that the stamps “reflect an unfair and painful reality that shouldn’t be allowed.” They aimed to highlight racial inequal‐ ity with every parcel or letter

which was sent with one of these stamps.

The campaign though has caused controversy. Correos aimed to “shine a light on racial inequality and promote diversi‐ ty, inclusion and equal rights,” but critics have hit back at the campaign.

Antumi Toasije, who leads the government’s Council for the Elimination of Racial or Ethnic Discrimination took to Twitter to express his concerns. He hopes to stop the sale of the stamps.

He tweeted and commented that: “A campaign that outrages those it claims to defend is al‐ ways a mistake.”

“Tax amnesties make it possible to regularise unde‐ clared assets under more advantageous conditions than if they had been taxed regularly and normally,” the government said in a statement released last week.

Companies or individuals who owe the treasury more than €600,000 will be pub‐ licly listed as debtors, pre‐ viously debts of €1 million needed to be accumulated before the name of the debtor was made public.

The bill also targets com‐ panies that use sophisticat‐ ed software and accounting methods to hide their true income and the limit for cash payments between businesses will be reduced from €2,500 to €1,000 so that ‘fraudulent practices will be made more diffi‐ cult’.

SOCIAL media giants, Facebook and Instagram, are giving users the option to hide public ‘likes’ on their posts.

The move though could scupper the influencer industry as likes are a key metric used to measure what impact influencers really have.

And the reasons why it occurs are completely different: most often it develops after a viral or bacterial infection, autoimmune problems or is induced by certain poisons and drugs. But the symptoms of acute myocarditis are exactly the same as those of myocardial infarction.”

According to the doctor, myocarditis is one of the leading causes of sudden death in young men.

Belarus Threats

THE President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is threatening to flood Europe with “migrants and drugs” after the EU imposed sanctions for the hijacking of a Ryanair jet.

Lukashenko, Europe’s last dicta-

tor, said the EU and others have launched a “hybrid war” and want to “suffocate” Belarus before starting a war against Russia.

“I acted lawfully and was protecting the people according to all international rules,” he said in his

first public appearance since the incident.

“As we predicted, ill-wishers from outside and inside the country have changed their ways of attacking our country. They crossed many red lines, crossed the boundaries of common sense and human morality,” he added.

The EU called the forced grounding of the Ryanair flight on Sunday May 23 a “hijacking” and demanded the immediate release of the journalist, Roman Protasevich, a key critic of authoritarian Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko who was pulled from the plane along with his girlfriend.

The bloc agreed on May 25 to impose sanctions against Belarus, including banning its airlines from using EU air space and airports.

Several European national airlines including Air France have also said they will now avoid flying over Belarus.

Lithuanian officials said the pilot diverted to Minsk because the control tower told him a bomb would go off if he landed in Vilnius.

Upon landing, no bomb was found.

Covid Vaccine Blood Clot Puzzle

GERMAN scientists claim to have found the cause of the blood clots which have been linked to the Oxford/AstraZeneca and the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccines in rare cases. Not only do scientists believe they have found the cause of the blood clots, they also believe that the vaccines can be altered in order to prevent the reactions happening too.

Rolf Marschalek, a professor at Goethe university in Frankfurt believes his research that he has been working on since March could contain all the answers. He has been leading studies into the blood clot puzzle and believes that the problem comes from “the adenovirus vectors that both vaccines use to deliver the genetic instructions for the spike protein of the SarsCov-2 virus into the body.”

Both the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines for the potentially deadly coronavirus have been affected by the rare blood clotting side effect.

The German scientist has been contacted by Johnson & Johnson, and according to the scientist they are looking for ways to alter the vaccine.

He explained that Johnson & Johnson: “is trying to optimise its vaccine now.”

“With the data we have in our hands we can tell the companies how to mutate these sequences, coding for the spike protein in a way that prevents unintended splice reactions.”

CHINESE President Xi Jinping had a half hour phone con‐ versation with Spanish Presi‐ dent Pedro Sánchez this week.

After asking Sánchez to convey his cordial greetings to King Felipe VI, he pointed out that China and Spain are important strategic partners and cooperation between the two is important.

Currency outlook: US dollar slumps on abysmal payroll reading, Pound surges amid easing political uncertainty

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.87 to £0.86 EUR/USD: Up from $1.20 to $1.22 An improving economic outlook in the Eurozone has been a key source of support for the euro over the past month.

This comes in response to the continued acceleration of the EU’s vaccine rollout as well as the reopening of more countries within the bloc.

This upside in the euro has also been supported by recent EUR data releases, which have been broadly positive and point to a strong rebound in economic activity in the second quarter. However, confirmation that the bloc suffered a double‐dip reces‐ sion over the winter ensured it wasn’t all plain sailing for the single currency.

Turning to June, we are likely to see the euro maintain its recent uptrend as the Eu‐ rozone’s economic prospects continue to improve.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.14 to €1.15 GBP/USD: Up from $1.38 to $1.41 The past month has seen the pound trend broadly higher, with the most no‐ table upswing in Sterling coming in re‐ sponse to reduced political uncertainty in the UK. This came after the Scottish National Par‐ ty failed to secure an outright majority in May’s election, reducing fears of an imme‐ diate independence referendum.

Also providing some lift to Sterling has been the reopening of more of the UK

economy and positive domestic data re‐ leases, although these gains have been tempered somewhat in the second half of May by UK coronavirus developments.

With the spread of the Indian variant of the coronavirus in the UK threatening to disrupt the government’s roadmap for eas‐ ing restrictions, domestic coronavirus headlines are likely to act as a key catalyst of movement in the pound in the weeks to come.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.72 to £0.70 USD/EUR: Down from €0.82 to €0.81 After fluctuating in late April in response to a dovish Federal Reserve policy state‐ ment and upbeat GDP figures, the US dollar experienced an aggressive selloff at the start of May following a startling miss in the latest US payroll reading.

A sharper‐than‐expected acceleration of domestic inflation in April helped the ‘Greenback’ to claw back some of its losses in the week that followed.

However, this upside in USD proved short lived, amidst expectations the Fed will continue to view the surge in inflation as ‘transitory’, as well as in the face of an increasingly upbeat global outlook, which has sapped safe‐haven demand.

Looking ahead, USD investors will likely be keeping a close eye on May’s payroll fig‐ ures, as another underwhelming reading will likely keep the pressure on the US dol‐ lar and validate the Fed’s current dovish bias.

So bitter and biased

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHAT an arrogant and highly predictable organisation the BBC actually are. When Dominic Cummings made his now infamous and highly illegal ‘Durham dash,’ during lockdown in March of last year, the media, especially the BBC, made an enormous hue and cry, accusing him of being a blatant liar and baying for his resignation.

In the light of his recent unsubstantiated accusations against the government, the BBC has revelled in his statements, treating them all as though they were gospel truth and truly making a meal out of every ‘fact’ that has spilled from the lips of this obnoxious individual, who is obviously so bitter and biased towards his former employers he would swear they were hatching a plot to put everyone in a onesie and stick a chip in their heads if he thought he could get away with it.

The BBC has of course also used the whole unsavoury incident to somehow divert the public’s attention from the Martin Bashir interview with Lady Diana, now proven to have been

obtained by stealth and the falsifying of bank documents. In their usual ‘damage control’ mode they have symbolically begun to sever the heads of a few initial scapegoats and minions involved. Tony Hall, who was head of the BBC at the time, has resigned from his position on the board of The

National Gallery, a gesture which means just about zilch.

Bashir has stepped down citing ‘health reasons’ and to date that has been the sum total of their retributions.

Will they reach the top? Don’t hold yer breath. I dread to think of the phone calls, text messages and shady

meetings that have taken place among the hierarchy, as they scrambled to cover their backs in their undoubted panic to exonerate themselves from the whole seedy exercise.

Why should the British taxpayer have to shell out for a load of well‐heeled manipulators, who are the hypocritical purveyors of left wing propaganda and Political Correctness which, if they have their way (heaven forbid) will ultimately put the UK under the jurisdiction of the Labour party at the next election?

I suppose it’s a complete coincidence that the new strain of Indian Covid happened to manifest two to three weeks after the return of the thousands of ethnic minorities who were allowed to visit Pakistan and India to celebrate the Ramadan and Eid festivals?

I also understand that a further nightmare that is threatening journalist and newscasters all over the world is yet another new variant which is thought to have originated in Wales and will henceforth be known as the Llanfaipwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrob wlllantysiliogogogoch Strain! EMMA WALLSWORTH THE fast current changes in climate which many of us have personally wit‐ nessed over the last eight years, always seem to creep up on us. I am sadly not as prepared as I should be in the few oc‐ casions we have to collect rain water.

We have managed to improve some of the ways in which we collect rain water and minimise water waste in our home.

Here are a few simple ways that may help you...

1) Add guttering to your home that leads to collection barrels.

2) Use a bowl in the sink when washing fruit and vegetables, water your plants with it afterwards.

3) Turn off the tap when cleaning your teeth. A running tap uses up to nine litres of water per minute.

4) Wait until you have a full load be‐ fore using your washing machine or dish‐ water, or handwash. Some new machines use less then seven litres per kilogram of clothes. Dishwashers can use 10 ‐15 litres of water each load.

5) Collect your grey water, use a simple filter system to then use on your garden.

6) If possible, have a shower rather than a bath. A five‐minute shower uses around 40 litres of water.

7) Use a watering can instead of a

4) Mulch soft fruit bushes with grass cuttings, straw and composts.

5) Place plant pots in the shade.

However, some people are rightly concerned about the tax, property ex‐ penses and security issues with their Spanish property being left unattended for six months of the year. What is the solution? buy a property in Spain and form a mini community with rules. That way your property can be occupied all year round and share costs.

Basically, if all the owners agree then you can enjoy your property as you wish. So, has the infamous timeshare returned? Most certainly not, maybe the best name for it is private co‐owner‐

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’V E been watching and reading stuff about Prince Harry and Prince Charles and it seems to me that Harry has decided that his dad wasn’t a great dad as far as being a good role model.

Harry has been getting some stick for it too but I actually get where he is coming from, after all, Charles’ treatment of Harry’s mum was disgusting. All through their courtship and marriage Charles was having an affair with Camila and was just using Princess Diana to knock out an heir and a spare. Everybody in the Royal Family knew and it looked like it was quite acceptable. So it’s not surprising that when Harry got older there was resentment for his father and ‘The Firm’ for their treatment of his mum, and in his opinion, towards Harry’s wife too.

It reminds me a bit of Bobby Moore. I knew his son Dean pretty well until his death some years ago. Dean was a troubled soul and one day we were talking about how it was being the son of an English legend and hero. Wherever he went

he was introduced as Bobby’s son. He saw statues of his dad and everybody said how much they loved him and what a great man he was. But Dean had a slightly different view because, apart from remembering what a great footballer he was, Dean’s memory was that he was the man that cheated on his mum with another woman and wrecked his home life.

But, of course, no-one ever realised how that messed up Dean’s life and, in the end, actually cost him his life too.

On a different subject I was parking my car the other day and the only space available was hard to get into because the car next to me had parked so badly. Its back end was over the white line which meant that my car had to go over the white line on the other side. The thing is that when I got back the offending car had gone which left mine looking like I had parked badly. I knew it wasn’t my fault and I felt like shouting out ‘It’s not my fault, I was forced to park like this.’

It’s a bit like when you come out of the loo on an aeroplane when someone hasn’t cleaned up properly and you want to say to the next person that it wasn’t your mess! No-one believes you.

IN the latest diversity drive, Rugby chiefs have scrapped using the ‘inappropriate’ nickname ‘Saxons’ for England’s second team which will revert to the name ‘England A’ after 15 years of being branded as the England Saxons. This in the wake of the RFU’s decision to distance itself from ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,’ the slave spiritual adopted as a terrace anthem by England rugby supporters.

What is wrong with these people? Are we going to force Sussex (South Saxons) and Essex (East Saxons) to change the names of their counties because the name doesn’t describe the people who live there or discriminates against residents who can’t trace their ances‐ try to the Saxons? The RFU does realise that England derives from the land of the Angles, right?

Yes, rugby may need to be more inclusive but a mindless name change won’t help. This is

ANGLO SAXONS: Why should we be ashamed of our history? just more absurd and pointless ‘wokery’ on steroids. Saxons are part of our history so why should we be ashamed of their cultural impact, and how does the name ‘Saxon’ stop non‐ white people from playing rugby? The corollary being we should maybe scrap using the word

‘England’, because presumably that name will trigger some with its associations with Empire and being white British?

Maybe, too, we should refrain from any competitive sport as it will hurt the feelings of the loser. The alternative is to withdraw players

How are you playing the game of life?

ROBERT SHALLIS DO you remember playing a board game called ‘The Game of Life.’ A brief outline of the game: it’s a simulation of travels through the latter stages of life, from uni‐ versity to retirement, facing the chal‐ lenges, twists and turns that life brings along the way.

However, unlike the board game, life is not lived on a quick roll of the dice to de‐ termine the outcome. Real life events are very different, but we can play the real game of life and give ourselves a better chance of beating the odds.

Have you ever played a game against someone who can never accept losing?

Becomes a sulk and resorts to cheating.

Whilst others lose gracefully, accept it and look forward to improving the next time around. This is how many people play out their real lives too.

It’s easy to relish in the enjoyment of your own successes in life, but, it’s equally as important to accept our fail‐ ings and learn from them, thus improv‐

I have worked alongside and dealt with successful real estate agents, London bankers and Wall Street traders. Many may perceive these high‐powered lucra‐ tive careered people to be winning their game of life, but it couldn’t be further

from the truth for some of them. Some find themselves too busy trying to make a living and forget to make a life. They have allowed the scales to tip too far in one di‐ rection leading to other important areas of their lives becoming neglected such as family, friends and even themselves.

So how do we keep a reasonably bal‐

anced life? Firstly, we need to remember what is important to us and to whose benefit our daily efforts are for. There is no point in slaving away at a job for the greater good of your family if it means you don’t get to spend time with them or it becoming detrimental to your health.

Over 95 per cent of us depart this world

without fulfilling our real desires. Regretful of not spending more time with families due to commitments that seemed so much more important at the time.

Enjoy being in the moment is key, re‐ gardless of your commitments as op‐ posed to seeing it as an annoying stepping stone to a perceived happier future. To‐ morrow never really comes and before you know it, you’ll look back and realise how much of life’s joys you have missed out on, without even noticing the scales of your life will have slowly tipped against you.

When you are living a balanced life, you are living in harmony with a sense of peace, able to focus on what really mat‐ ters. You are then winning your game of life. You are starting to understand that you can actually design your own life and allow yourself to be the creator of it.

Things can now stop happening to you and start happening for you.

So, discard that dice and determine a balanced outcome that benefits all.

DAVID WORBOYS PUCCINI’S operas are among the high‐ est form of art and I personally find them sublime, along with some of the works of Donizetti, Bellini and Gior‐ dano. However, the towering com‐ posers of opera are considered to be Verdi (Italian) and Wagner (German).

Much as I love Puccini, I would not ar‐ gue with the global assessment by those closely involved. However, just a few days ago, a slightly intoxicated Lon‐ doner assured me that “Puccini will al‐ ways live in the shadow of Verdi.”

But how can such wonderful music be in the shadow of anything? Are Haydn and Mozart ‘in the shadow’ of Beethoven? Are Murillo and El Greco ‘in the shadow’ of Velazquez? Surely not.

In many walks of life and over several centuries, the scrutiny of experts and common opinion have given us clear ‘front‐runners’. But those who really live in their shadows are usually those whose obscurity is the result of a far lower level of talent.

Among athletes, Muhammed Ali was widely declared the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT). But how can a boxer, however

probably be right up there with them.

However, many great inventors and scientists etc have been pushed into the shadows ‐ in so far that they are not as well‐known as others in their field, al‐ though they were there first.

Darwin seems to have succeeded in pushing Alfred Russel Wallace into the shadows through alleged plagiarism.

Darwin is much more celebrated than Wallace, although it was probably the latter that developed the original theory of evolution. George Stephenson intro‐

So, when I next hear an aria from La Boheme or Madama But‐ terfly, Tosca or Turandot, it will not en‐ ter my head that Verdi is held in higher esteem by a majority of aficionados.

90-DAY RULE OVER the past weeks there have been numerous articles and letters regarding the 90-day rule in Spain. A great number of people, including myself, purchased a property in this country to facilitate a holiday home, to be enjoyed as and when I could, always sticking to the 180-day rule with regard to non-residential occupancy. Like many others, during my time in Spain I contributed to the economy paying all dues and purchasing a car. All bills like water, electricity, telephone, internet, suma, private health insurance being settled by standing order.

The purpose of this letter is to suggest a possible practical solution to the difficulty in the issue of a document in the form of a NON-RESIDENT HOME OWNERSHIP CERTIFICATE. To obtain such a document the house owner would produce, either at a police station or local town hall the following documents: 1. Original or copy of the Escritura for the property.

2. Passport.

3. Recent utility bills.

4. Copy of an up-to-date Padron.

5. Any other relevant documentation as required.

On payment of an administration fee, say €50, the certificate would be issued and renewable say every three years. This would entitle the owner(s), either sole or joint, access to their property as and when required.

This suggestion is of course open to any modification particularly with regard to the use of the property by immediate family members, but I am sure there is an answer out there for a workable solution.

This idea could perhaps be considered by the EU as a whole as there are properties owned in all countries by non residents.

and after finally finding out how to get on the ‘list’ for vaccination (I’m an expat with private health insurance), and subsequently registered at the health centre in Marbella (Las Albarizas), I have been waiting seven weeks so far.

I've been at Las Albarizas three times since to try and get on the list, but every time told that I will be called in due time! It’s absurd that the Junta here appears to have placed this age group on ‘hold’ due to the lack of AstraZeneca, whereas in other parts of Spain, the most vulnerable are being given alternatives which have since become available! I suspect that Richard and I are not alone and thus it would be much appreciated if this issue could be highlighted again in you excellent newspaper.

A Covid windfall tax Dear Sirs As the Covid-19 pandemic appears to be under control, it is time to consider a windfall tax on all those who have profited from the virus or seen their, already vast, wealth increase. This should not be seen as an attack on the wealthy, but a contribution towards the underpaid health workers who have spent the year saving lives, at a huge risk to their own, and the millions who have seen their livelihoods suffer through job losses or forced business closures.

It cannot be equitable in a democratic society that sports stars, video, internet, distribution, energy or financial company bosses should make fortunes at the expense of the rest of the population.

A one-off windfall tax on excessive gains would go someway to reduce growing inequality and help governments finance the cost of looking after those who have been penalised due to the pandemic.

COVID COMPARISON IT must have been impossible to ignore the seven-hour marathon that was Dominic Cummings speaking to a joint inquiry of the health and social care and science and technology committees.

Although the often used phrase says ‘Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’ it would appear that it is quite appropriate for the way in which Cummings has come out ‘dishing the dirt.’

In fairness to them, they were facing a problem that caught the entire world by surprise and creating a sensible and workable solution was without doubt something that would tax any group of politicians.

When compared to Spain for example, the British started off incredibly badly and seemed to completely flounder and have no real idea of how to cope with the pandemic.

Spain on the other hand appeared to react very quickly and declared a State of Alarm and lockdown earlier than the UK, but the fact is that with a

population of 46.75 million (according to statista.com) and 80,000 deaths attributed to coronavirus, 0.16 per cent of the population in Spain died.

In percentage terms, the actual number of fatalities is close to the UK which with its population of almost 68 million, there were 128,000 deaths, equating to 0.19 per cent of the population.

It seems that the so-called clowns in the UK didn’t do as badly as one might have thought and as far as vaccinations are concerned, they have certainly been very successful in obtaining vaccine and inoculating their population.

Hot in heels

WALKING PROUD: If you decide to don high heels remember to keep your chin raised.

HIGH heels can be a woman’s - or a man’s best friend.

They can make the person wearing them look taller and more confident. But to walk in them successfully, you’ll need to adopt these few simple steps.

You will notice that high heels tend to shorten your stride. Don’t fight against this, take small and slow steps. The higher the heel, the shorter your stride will be. Also, don’t bend your knees any more than you normally would.

When walking with heels, walk from heel to toe then slide your weight forward as if you were walking on tiptoe, and take the next step.

It can be difficult to maintain posture and keep straight when walking in heels. So, toss your shoulders back and align your head with your spine, keeping your chin parallel to the ground. Also, keep your legs together as much as possible.

Many people who chose to wear high heels do so to be more sensual, so it may be good to cross one foot in front of the other and add a little more hip movement. You can achieve this by walking on an imaginary invisible straight line.

But remember, no matter how beautiful you and your heels are, don’t don them all the time. Wearing high heels too often can cause chronic foot and back pain.

Eyelash errors WHILST false eyelashes can create a more dramatic look, if applied incorrectly they can also have the opposite effect. Nobody is born with an innate professional knowledge about how to apply these, so the important thing is to be aware of the basic errors and then avoid them.

Once you’ve opened them up, don’t presume that your false eyelashes are the correct length for your eyes. You may need to cut them slightly so that they fit correctly. Then, once you’ve applied the application glue, wait at least 30 seconds before you apply the eyelashes. This gives the glue time to harden and get sticky and avoids the issue of the eyelash moving around. Be very careful where you apply the eyelashes. Don’t leave them much above the line of your natural lash. This will create a very clean and neat effect. If your pre-night out routine involves putting on a face mask to clean your pores. Don’t apply your eyelashes until you have removed the mask. Otherwise you run the risk of accidently pulling them off.

And remember, simply because you have bought single-use eye lashes doesn’t mean that you can only use them once. As long as they’re in good condition, there’s no reason for you not to use them a couple of times. Just be sure to clean them and maintain their shape. But be extra attentive to make sure that you can’t see any glue residue from their previous use.

Making your face light up THE great thing about make-up highlighters is that you can look radiant and glow without it seeming as though you’ve any make-up on at all.

To begin with, imagine a line running from the middle of your ear towards your lips and another running from the top of your ear to the outer corner of your eye. You will apply the highlighter between these two invisible lines. Simply take a make-up brush and sweep the highlighting powder on before blending in.

Then disguise any complexion or dark circles under your eyes by gently working into your skin an illuminating concealer. Follow this by blending some highlighter just under your eyebrows to achieve defined, bold eyebrows.

If you want your nose to look slightly slimmer then add a subtle highlight down its bridge, putting some extra on the tip.

Seat Reports losses SEAT has reported a loss of €36 million (£31.2 million) in the first three months of 2021, which is 25 per cent less than the corresponding peri‐ od of the previous year, of course, the result of the pan‐ demic, and the global short‐ age of semiconductors which led to lower production levels, and consequently, sales.
