Torremolinos Pride Festival Walkahome Virtual Event CARMEN GARCÍA, the Torremolinos Town Hall councillor for Diversity, along with fellow councillor, Nicolás de Miguel, and several LGTBIQ + associations in the city have announced that the ‘Torremolinos Pride 2021’ will be celebrated from June 3 to 6 around the town.

Due to the pandemic, they explained, there will not be the usual massive parade through the streets, nor the concerts in the Plaza de la Nogalera, with this year’s event having to comply with the current sanitary and security measures.

De Miguel explained, “I have made the flag of what Torremolinos means for the LGTBIQ+ community. This city is a reference to freedom and diversity, both nationally and internationally, not only because of the festivity of these dates, but also in terms of the vindication and commitment that we

New Mobile Laser Traffic Radar

JOSELE GONZÁLEZ, the mayor of Mijas ‐ accompa‐ nied by Nicolás Cruz, his councillor for Traffic ‐ at a press conference, has unveiled the latest addition to the Local Police’s fight against traffic infringements ‐ the new latest generation mobile radar.

The mayor explained, “This kinemometer has laser technology and is capable of measuring speed in 20 milliseconds. Local Police officers will use this new device on those roads where there is a greater influx of traffic as well as those where there is a greater number of claims.”

Mr González wished to assure road users that the device has “no tax collection effort,” and that it is on‐ ly a “preventive and awareness‐raising measure,” to encourage drivers to drive within the speed limits of the roads.

THE Fuengirola Town Hall is calling on locals to support the ‘WalkaHome’ event which is set to be held on Sunday May 23.

The event is a virtual race and will support the Cudeca foundation which has helped over 17,000 people since 1992 and also offers support to their families.

In Fuengirola alone the foundation has 100 patients that it supports. During 2020, 1,600 people were helped with over 2,000 relatives being supported too.

Fuengirola’s mayor, Ana Mula has asked locals to support the event and the foundation. She highlighted the excellent work that the foundation has done and commented that, “This Foundation is a benchmark in the care of people suffering from cancer and other advanced diseases,

Covid Denier denounced LOCAL POLICE from Alhaurín de la Torre have identified a resident of the town who uploaded offensive content onto Instagram, spreading messages that, in light of a report written and presented in court, could constitute the crimes of libel and slander against the State Security Forces and Bodies.

Two officers first encountered this person when they observed him in mid‐February in the town centre dur‐ ing curfew, and he allegedly recorded the officers, as well as insulting them, accusing them of operating outside the law, reportedly uploading the video onto Instagram, where it was located and registered as part of an investiga‐ tion into the man. He allegedly upload‐ ed the same video onto a second Insta‐ gram account which contained exclusively videos of police actions, along with denialist messages saying he refused to wear a mask or comply with any other health restrictions.

€120,000 Discovered In Hidden Compartment

LOCAL POLICE in Malaga have discovered €120,000 (£103,209) hidden in the double bottom of a vehicle. Officers from the Research and Protection Group (GIP) discovered a 46-year-old man was carrying the cash without the mandatory declaration.

At around 8pm on Sunday, May 9, Local Police officers stopped the man on Villanueva del Rosario after noticing a plastic bag with numerous bundles of bills that amounted to €15,000 (£12,899), of which there was no clarification of its origin.

Following a more thorough search of the inside of the vehicle, officers discovered a hidden compartment behind the back of the rear seat that contained a further €105,000 (£90,290).

When questioned by officers, the driver claimed the cash had been given to him by a stranger to pass on to another stranger and that he had no knowledge about the origin or destination of the money.

Due to the man claiming to not have any knowledge of the movement of the €120,000, Local Police confiscated the money as a precaution, to be deposited into the account that the Ministry of Economy and Finance has for this purpose.

Kept alive ON May 16, a 43-year-old man who was enjoying a meal with his family in Puerto Banus suffered a serious heart attack and emergency services including a doctor and Local Police spent time resuscitating him before he was stabilised and transferred to the Costa del Sol hospital.

Medal of Merit REPRESENTATIVES of the Association of Volunteers for Civil Protection of Benalmadena travelled to Sevilla on May 13 to receive a Medal of Merit for Civil Protection, from the Minister of the Interior, Fernando GrandeMarlaska at a ceremony held in the Gothic hall of the Real Alcázar.

Gourmet market TORREMOLINOS will have its first permanent Gourmet Market celebrating the Taste of Malaga which is due to open in June, situated in the old City Hall facility in the Plaza de la Independencia which used to house the municipal market which has now been renovated.

Volunteer clean-up THE area known as El Salto del Agua which is near to the industrial estate of San Pedro de Alcantara has suffered from pollution problems to a reservoir that is adjacent to houses there.

In the late 19th century, a hydraulic device was installed in the area which used the flow of water to generate electricity for the Colonia Agricola de San Pedro (Agricultural Collective) and a reservoir was built to store water.

This reservoir (or swamp as it is referred to locally) has been classified as being a protected engineering site and effectively

Now, a group of volunteers

made up of members of the Neighbourhood Association, Ecologists in Action, Marbella Baseball Club (whose pitch is nearby), Podemos and residents

of San Pedro have decided to do something about the problem.

They spent the weekend of May 15 and 16 getting into the reservoir and removing algae and huge amounts of weed as well as cleaning up the land area surrounding the water and introducing aquatic plants which will purify the water naturally.

They hope that this will encourage wildlife to nest and also ducks to return so that rather than have a rank and unpleasant outlook, residents will be able to enjoy a much more attractive vista and the sight of nature returning to the area.

Biggest River Park in Spain TO add to an already impressive list of at‐ tractions in Andalucia, an incredible new project is in the planning stage, to create Corredor Verde (the Green Corridor), which when completed, will link the Guadalhorce estuary with the Caminito del Rey, covering 4.5million m², to become the largest river park in the whole of Spain.

This ambitious project will be created in stages, over several years, and will pass through eight municipalities, budgeted to cost around €200m, in a 54km trail through the natural beauty spots of the Guadal‐ horce River based in Malaga, up to the Des‐ filadero de los Gaitanes gorge, below the Caminito del Rey, taking in Alhaurín el

Grande, Alora, Coin, Ardales, Alhaurín de la Torre, Pizarra, Cártama, and Malaga City it‐ self.

The cost will be spread among the eight municipalities, and plans are being drawn up for the first phase, which, if all goes ac‐ cording to plan, will be ready for work to start before the end of 2021.

Happy La Cala Lions prepare for Spring Show Hawaiian Hula HAVING reached its Go Fund Me target of €30,000 to cover ongo‐ ing overheads, the Salon Vari‐ etes Theatre in Fuengirola will soon be announcing future shows.

Still looking to continue to raise funds, it is holding a tribute to Hawaii with its Hola to Aloha evening which will take place on the evening of Saturday May 29 with a fancy dress barbecue starting at 7pm at Restaurant Videra, on the beach opposite Il‐ lunion Hotel, Fuengirola.

Reservations for tables of four or six are being taken so email fundraising@salonvarietes.com to see if there is still space for what promises to be a fun evening with gentlemen encour‐ aged to wear their brightest Hawaiian shirts and the ladies their grass skirts.

With food, drinks, games and fancy dress, tickets cost €35 per person, it should be a very spe‐ cial event which will allow the Salon Varietes to keep offering English language entertainment on a regular basis.

High Tech LED Theft Of 13 Street Lighting Luxury Watches THE councillor for Operational Services of the Benal‐ madena City Council, Salvador Rodríguez, has an‐ nounced that the work being carried out in Avenida del Cosmos is to replace the sodium vapor lamps with new LED lighting units which will be more reliable and use less power.

In total, six new LED streetlights will also be installed in Santangelo Norte, located at the access to the ceme‐ tery, and for this, a channel of approximately 140 met‐ tres has been made, to proceed with the placement of the anchors and subsequent installation of the poles six metres apart, he added.

The councilor said that with these replacement and installation works of LED lights in the municipality, “we improve energy efficiency and facilitate the corre‐ sponding savings in consumption, which translates di‐ rectly into a reduction in the bill that the City Council pays.”

THE National Police has arrested two men for the theft of 13 luxury watches with a combined value of €69,000 in Puerto Banús. The two men, 41 and 27, of Moroccan and Algerian na‐ tionality respectively, were also charged with document falsification, crimes against road safety and their membership in a criminal or‐ ganisation.

The two men were responsible for finding possible victims, often in restaurants and luxury entertainment venues. Other members of the organisation would then carry out the rob‐ beries. When the targeted victims left the es‐ tablishments, the criminals would follow them and pull the watch off their wrist by breaking the strap. If they were met with resistance the criminals would use violence in order to get the item. They would then flee in different vehicles which were rented using false documentation.

Twinning signs THE mayor of Gibraltar City, John Gonçalves has seen the coming to fruition of a project that he was keen to under‐ take during his tenure.

He has organised the procuring and installa‐ tion of ‘Gibraltar ‐ twinned with’ signs for the main entry points to the Rock and the City.

Gibraltar is twinned with the cities of Goole (England), Ballymena (Northern Ireland), Kingston (Jamaica) and Funchal (Madeira).

The signs, placed at the Airport Terminal, Frontier, and the City Hall, will remind Gibral‐ tarians and visitors alike of the links between Gibraltar and these four cities.

Special mention should be made of the fact that Gibraltarians were evacuated to both Jamaica and Madeira during the Second World War, having to risk their lives as the merchant ship they were on avoided Nazi U‐Boats en route.

Sad fall from balcony A WOMAN died on Fri‐ day May 14 when she fell down onto the street at around 8pm, from the balcony of an apartment on Calle Padre José Vera.

The National Police has launched an inves‐ tigation into the inci‐ dent, which appears to have been an accident.

It is thought that the woman had gone out onto the balcony to smoke a cigarette, and could possibly have climbed on to the bal‐ cony railing to take a photograph and subse‐ quently toppled over the edge.

Darkness into Light 2021 Quite an achievement from Front page »

WHAT an amazing turn out we had for our fifth annual Darkness into Light walk on the Costa del Sol. This year because of Covid we had to break up into small groups all along the coast, which proved to be very popular and successful.

We were represented in every town from Torremolinos to La Duquesa and also for the first time in Gibraltar.

We had a turnout in excess of 500 participants and raised almost €23,000, all of this money to be used in the area of suicide and self harm prevention, education and elimination of stigma.

Worldwide DIL 2021 raised €7,500,000 and we support over 30 mental health charities globally.

Our charity partner on the Costa del sol is the wonderful organisation Afesol Salud Mental based in Benalmadena, with day centres in various towns on the coast and are actively involved in Suicide Prevention

and education.

I had the honour of of meeting with Miguel Guerrero, who kindly joined ourselves and Afesol at the Press conference in Marbella Town Hall. Miguel is the head of the newly formed unit, the Ciceron Programme in the Costa del Sol Hospital, the objective of which is to offer intervention through specific psychotherapy and intensive follow up for patients with suicidal ideation and / or after making a suicide attempt.

In addition, relatives of people who died of suicide are cared for in order to offer psychological support that facilitates of reworking an extremely complicated grief.

I wish to thank all all the amazing men, women and children who joined us on the morning and all of the bars, cafes and restaurants (too numerous to mention) that opened in the early hours to facilitate our participants.

LAST Saturday, May 15, two somewhat footsore walkers made a triumphant en‐ trance to La Cala de Mijas having walked more than 200 kilometres from Cordoba to raise funds for ACE animal charity.

Katarzyna Slomianna (better known as Kasia) had always wanted to undertake a significant walk and her original plan was to follow part of the trail of the Camino de Santiago, staying in pilgrim’s hostels, but that was all negated by the pandemic as many hostels had closed.

Speaking to Euro Weekly News, she ex‐ plained that as she was going to undertake the walk, she thought that it would be a great idea to try to raise some funds for An‐ imal Care España as she is a great lover of dogs.

As things moved on, so she was contact‐ ed by another dog lover, Paul Shafto and they agreed to undertake the walk togeth‐ er which Kasia says was a great idea, not only as it increased the amount of money that might be raised, but also to give her companionship during the daily hikes.

Collective Calling Gala MARBELLA based charity Collective Calling will hold its next gala at the prestigious Anantara Villa Padierna Palace with tickets costing €120 per person.

Starting at 7pm with a welcome drink and special photoshoot with vintage cars, the Rat Pack tribute group will appear at 8pm to entertain guests whilst a three-course dinner with unlimited drinks will be served.

At 9.30pm there will be a short presentation from the charity and at 10pm an auction of luxurious prizes as well as the opening of Blackjack and Roulette tables with the event finishing at midnight.

For tickets call 711 006 961 and those who would like to stay the night will receive a 15 per cent discount on their room.

Collective Calling raises funds to allow it to provide food and other necessities for disadvantaged families on the Costa del Sol as well as supporting children in Tanzania.

“I thought that I was pretty fit as I work out and exercise regularly, but this was not as easy as I expected as within a day, I had blisters on both feet,” explained Kasia.

“The other problem was that walking through Cordoba was a bit monotonous as one day we walked for 24 kilometres and all we saw were olive trees, with nowhere to stop as there just weren’t any villages around,” she added.

The important thing was that they suc‐ ceeded and so far, their combined dona‐ tions total €3,040 which is a fantastic amount for the charity to receive and it is still possible to visit the website https://www.gofundme.com/f/help‐ani mal‐care‐espana‐in‐la‐cala‐de‐mijas to give a little more or donations can be made di‐ rect to ACE via their website.

Simply Surviving THIS Facebook based group was initially established in order to support entertainers and venues when Covid-19 virtually obliterated the sector. As soon as the severe lockdown was eased a little, its organisers planned a number of events to try and create some momentum.

It then became clear that a number of registered charities based here on the Costa del Sol were also struggling due to this lack of events and so now Simply Surviving also supports a charity chosen each month by putting on a monthly dinner and concert, a Fun Quiz and historical Mijas Walking Tours of the pueblo.

There is an important social aspect to the group too and so each month around 80 members meet at The Lunch Bunch, a lunch event which takes place at a different venue each month. Last week 75 members and their friends enjoyed a fabulous lunch at Ku’Damm restaurant at the marina in Fuengirola. Today (Thursday May 20) sees the launch of a brand new initiative, The Breakfast Club, which aims to support small cafes in the Mijas and Fuengirola areas. The group invites you to come along for breakfast and a chat or indeed to any of their events.

With 620 members, the Facebook page is proving popular with local businesses which are reporting excellent responses to their free ads.

NEW WEEKLY LIVE STREAM FROM AROUND MIJAS A NEW project is to be launched at the beginning of June to bring Mijas live into people’s homes. The idea comes from Bill Anderson, a local councillor in Mijas with the Partido Popular, but he stresses that “this is not about politics, it is about Mijas.”

For the last 14 months, Anderson has been trying to keep locals informed about what is happening in Mijas, but he concedes that it is sometimes like trying to push water uphill.

“There are so many pages on social media that it is difficult to ensure everyone has access to timely information and when it comes to events, people often find out about them after they have taken place.”

Anderson has the collaboration of some well-known figures from around Mijas who are heavily involved in their communities and who will be co-hosting some of the programmes.

Daniela Wenk is widely known for her tireless efforts in the Calahonda community. Alan Boardman is one of the drivers of the Simply Surviving group, which has been organising events, not least of which have been his historical walking tours around Mijas pueblo, to raise money for various local charities.

The other thing Anderson highlights is that there will be a live stream taking place after the Mijas Council meetings to explain what decisions have been made and how people may be affected by them.

Anderson admits, “I gave up trying to write about Council meetings as they are usually so dull and uninteresting that people wouldn’t read beyond the first two sentences. And in any case it’s more important to understand the implications of decisions than to just know about

NEW PROJECT: What is happening around Mijas. what has been approved.” To do this he will be joined by former mayor, Angel Nozal, and former Finance councillor for Mijas, Mario Bravo, who as he puts it, “will help to pick things apart and explain how things work at a local government level.”

The half hour live streams will go out once a week (time and day to be confirmed) and are expected to start around the beginning of June.

“There are several advantages to going down this road,” explains Anderson, “as people will not only be listening to a live ‘broadcast’ but will also be able to ask questions during the live programme and hopefully get an immediate response.”

The live streams will go directly via Anderson’s YouTube channel and so will be available later to anyone who is unable to listen in live.

Anderson contends that he needs to embrace new technologies and not rely on old ways of doing things. “The problem with using platforms like Facebook these days is that there is so much material that new posts quickly get lost in a feed, and sifting through pages and pages of what people had for dinner can make it hard, if not impossible, to find something that interests you.”

He adds that making all of these live streams available on YouTube will make it far easier to track things down.

Anderson wants to see local residents getting involved in the weekly programmes, “for example, talking to some of the charities who benefit from the work of Simply Surviving, or locals who want to contribute to the discussion on what communities need.”

But Mijas already has a €2.5 million communications company. Isn’t this just duplication? Anderson claims that it is not, and that very few International residents (which is how he refers to the “foreigners”) actually even watch or listen in to existing channels.

He also adds that the governing team controls to a great extent the content of the various media and that the international community is not well represented in these. “This will be for the international community, by the international community.

There has already been an interest expressed to do a monthly live stream in Norwegian.”

He finishes by stressing that this project is not politically motivated, but is based on a desire to connect with more residents on a regular basis about things that interest them.

THE ARCH Rescue Centre in Alhaurin el Grande is opening for extended hours on May 30 for a special Sunday from 9am to 4pm.

Come and meet ARCH mascot little Bonnie, Rosie the blind donkey and her friends Spotti, Duke the little black stallion (whose story appeared in Euro Weekly News recently) and all the other residents.

Run for mental health Eligible for paternity leave ON Saturday May 15, UK government staff and fam‐ ily members around the world took part in a unique, 24‐hour global marathon relay to support global and local mental health charities. So far over £15,000 has been raised in support of Mind and more in support of local charities, including here in Spain.

Hundreds of people took part in the charity event to support the important work of the ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs (FOPG). The charity breeds and trains guide dogs, so they can be placed free of charge with people who have severe visual impairment in the commu‐ nity, enabling them to live the fullest lives possible.

Holiday Refunds UK travel firms have been warned that they need to inform travellers of their rights with regards to refunds. The holiday industry has been warned by the UK’s competition regulator forcing TUI, Europe’s biggest travel company, to be more transparent with their customers on getting a refund.

On May 13, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it had contacted 100 package tour companies to remind them of their obligation to offer refunds for cancelled holidays and return the cash within two weeks.

The warning from the CMA follows an announcement from the UK about easing restrictions on holidays, with travellers from England permitted to travel to a dozen ‘green list’ destinations from Monday, May 17. The ‘green list’ includes Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands, Israel and Portugal, including the Azores and Madeira, and two British overseas territories in the Atlantic.

The repeated failure of travel firms informing customers of their right to cash refunds if a booking is forced to be cancelled has caused concern for the regulator. The CMA has received over 23,000 complaints about issues with refunds since March 2020.

THE Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, a famous centre of pilgrimage for many, has finally had the last piece of scaffolding, and the final crane removed, which have been covering its beautiful baroque façade for the last eight years.

Starting the difficult and arduous task back in 2013, the building which had become dilapidated due to the weather was gradually brought back to life, and now the renovated cathedral looks like new, with its gleaming stonework and stunning design once again visible to the multitudes of people who flock to this shrine of worship each year.

Restoration is due to start on another part of the building soon, that of the museum section, but that will not affect the main body of the building, with this being the Xacobeo Year, and pilgrims will be venturing on the famed Camino de Santiago, to reach the Plaza del Obraidoiro and admire their destination in its full splendour, after spending eight years visiting only to find it hidden by scaffolding.

Bungee Jump Goes Wrong A BUNGEE jump went wrong in Sevilla, after a man suffered a fall during the extreme sport.

Emergency services were successfully able to rescue the 34-year-old man after a bungee jump went wrong Man landed on a cliff. and he was left on a cliff.

Emergency services rescued the man before he was taken by helicopter to Sevilla’s Virgen Macarena University Hospital after being injured in the fall.

The 112 Emergency Services were alerted to the accident by the Public Health Emergency Company (EPES 061) and due to the fact that the man was in a difficult to access position on a cliff, firefighters were asked to help in the rescue.

He was rushed to hospital by an EPES helicopter which was waiting to transfer him to Sevilla’s Virgen Macarena University Hospital to receive treatment for the injuries he sustained in the accident.

All Summer Holidays pulled Danone To Scrap Expiration Dates ONE of Britain’s largest online holiday sales portals ‘On The Beach’ has announced that it is halting all sales of summer holidays until at least September, due to the continued uncertainty surrounding travel, with Portugal, one of the UK’s ‘green list’ countries announcing on Thursday May 13 that they are extending their ‘state of calamity’ until May 30.

Simon Cooper, the firm’s chief executive, said “There’s nothing we want more than to be able to send customers on holiday, but with the current number of unknowns, we don’t think that now is the right time for customers to book new holidays departing in the next few months.”

Mr Cooper added he believes that even if ‘On The Beach’ went ahead and sold holidays, which then had to be cancelled, its profits risked being outweighed by “administrative costs and loss of goodwill,” telling the press that many would-be holiday-

makers have been “jaded” by the bad experience of their 2020 holidays when many had booked only to have them cancelled due to the shifting travel restrictions.

Fake Driving Licences A NETWORK that sold nearly 2,000 fake driving licences was identified on Tuesday May 11. There is expected to be around 9,000 arrests made throughout the region and the rest of Spain.

The Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia has claimed that the organisation issued fake cards to people who have never previously had one or had lost one, and charged them between €4,000 (£3,435) and €10,000 (£8,589) per licence.

The case was initially opened in 2020 due to a police complaint and there have now been 1,845 drivers identified across Spain who have a licence obtained through the criminal organisation. This means that some of these people have never had any official accreditation, examination or processing.

DANONE has announced that it will scrap the expiration date stamp on around 78 per cent of their products sold in Spain and replace it with a ‘preferred consumption date’, in an aim to stop con‐ sumers throwing away food just because it is out of date.

Cédric Pantaleón, the vice president of dairy sales, and Paolo Tafuri, the general direc‐ tor of Danone Spain, Paolo Tafuri, revealed this change at a press conference on Thursday May 13, explaining that the new labelling will have icons as a guide to verify that the prod‐ uct is still suitable for consump‐ tion outside the best before date.

Tea Will Taste different The 90-day rule

A RECENT report from the charity organisation, Chris‐ tian Aid, has said that Kenya ‐ the African country that is the world’s largest exporter of black tea ‐ is facing a crisis that could challenge a great British in‐

stitution, the tea drinkers.

According to their research, extreme weather conditions in Kenya are causing more errat‐ ic periods of rainfall, meaning the country suffers droughts and then mass floods, which, combined with rising temper‐

atures will affect the amount of land that stays workable for growing tea plants, and the change in climate will also af‐ fect the production of the leaves that are turned into black tea.

Their report has also pre‐ dicted that as a result of cli‐ mate change, by 2050, tea production will drop by around 39 per cent, as grow‐ ing conditions will not be opti‐ mal, and Fiachra Moloney, of PG Tips maker Unilever, added, “In East Africa, where so much of our tea comes from, climate change is putting the livelihoods of the people who grow tea for us at risk.”

Speaking to the press, a tea farmer from Kericho in Kenya’s Western Highlands, 72‐year‐old Richard Koskei, said climate change is “a real threat. We cannot predict sea‐ sons anymore, temperatures are rising, rainfall is more er‐ ratic, more often accompa‐ nied by unusual hailstones and longer droughts which was not the case in the past.”

A LETTER recently received from a very upset UK-based reader about the 90/180 day rule concerning visits to Spain has highlighted a problem which needs addressing.

In 2013 the couple purchased a second home in Murcia so that they could enjoy the much milder winters and used to spend from October to March which was beneficial to their health.

Now, since Brexit (which incidentally they didn’t vote for) they can only stay for 90 days rather than their usual six months which means that quite understandably they are upset and seriously considering selling their property and purchasing a new one elsewhere.

In their letter, they suggest that Spain is being short sighted by introducing this regulation especially as they know of people in a similar situation who are spending money during the Spanish ‘down season’ and can’t understand why this rule is being enforced.

This means that British citizens who were allowed to stay almost indefinitely can now only spend 90 days out of 180 days across the Schengen zone This means that many of the more obvious choices for resettlement within relatively easy flying times from the UK and in the sunnier climates such as France, Greece, Italy, Malta and Portugal are in exactly the same situation as Spain.

Many other European Countries allow just 60 to 90 days visit unless you have a student visa and the only way round the problem is to purchase a Gold Visa (in Spain the minimum requirement is €500,000 in real estate) or to apply for residency which would allow you to travel between the UK and Spain.

There are of course tax implications in taking residency in Spain, but as this couple have owned a property here since 2013, it may be an option but they would need to take advice from a local lawyer and be prepared for quite a long wait.

Royal British Legion Centenary RETIRED Lieutenant General James Bashall, the national president of the Royal British Legion led a ceremony on Saturday May 15, where he laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, to mark the centenary of the charity organisation.

The Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) union took to social media in order to share a video of protesters including some who were seen to wear the faces of Caixabank executives on their masks. The protest took place outside of Valencia’s Palacio de Congresos where the shareholder meeting was being held.

While ordinary folk feared losing their jobs, shareholders at the annual meeting decided that the new Caixabank Chairman Jose Ignacio Goirigolzarri, was worthy of a staggering fixed salary of €1.65 million. Shareholders voted for this, and even voted for a bonus of up to €200,000 too.

Wes Anderson’s Next Film FILM director Wes Anderson will shoot his next film in Madrid this July, August and September, The Film Stage has reported. With his film The French Dispatch now confirmed to world premiere at Cannes Film Festival, the director is now planning his next project.

It was reported last autumn that he would be in Rome to shoot a new romantic film, however, it has been reported that sets are already being built for a new film in Spain.

The set is said to resemble desert landscapes seen in westerns, however, reports say that the film will not be of that genre.

There has been no indication of the plot or cast of the film set to be shot in Madrid, specifically Chinchón in the southeast, yet sources expect the familiar style of Anderson’s past films.

Chinchón’s mayor Francisco Javier Martínez said, “This is very important to this city,” and highlighted that the town’s cinema will be open for him to shoot at if he wishes. It looks as though film fans will have back-to-back Anderson films in 2021 and 2022.

Laying Off employees TELECOMS firm, Orange, is going to lay off up to 485 of their employees in Spain over the next few weeks, Reuters has reported.

The company made the announcement on Friday, May 14, citing years of decreasing income due to Spain’s hypercompetitive and increasingly cheap telecommunications sector.

Much like other European rivals, the telecoms firm has been facing increasing concerns aside from the health crises’ impact

on the sector, investing extensively on infrastructures including fibre-optic cabling, finding it difficult to fund its 5G network upgrade.

Reducing their workforce will be extremely important for Orange to ensure that the firm can keep up with competitiveness in the face of structural changes, the statement also said, noting that negotiations with labour unions would be starting within the next few days.

Not Paid since March SADLY, cleaning workers at Barajas airport have not been paid since March, a situation which is said to be affecting some 90 families.

The workers belong to the company Rentevic who are charged with cleaning aeroplane interiors. Workers at the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez airport have now worryingly not been paid since March.

Price reduction policies have regrettably been seen in the area of public tenders for cleaning services for some time now, and the Federation of Services, Mobility and Consumption of UGT (FeSMC UGT) Madrid has been warning against the negative effects that this could have.

The union has called for Aena to step up and ‘immediately’ end the contract with Rentevic. They also expect Aena to find a solvent company able to provide the services required.

In 2019 it moved filming to Spain taking advantage of Andalucia’s varied landscapes to stand in for Australia, Greece, and even parts of America.

Eurovision 2021 THE Eurovision Song Contest 2021 will take place in Rotterdam this year. The Dutch city was due to host the Contest in 2020 before the event was cancelled due to the ongoing Covid‐19 pandemic. The Semi‐Finals took place on Tuesday May 18 and continue tonight, Thurs‐ day May 20 with the Grand Final taking place on Saturday May 22.

The venue is Ahoy in Rotterdam, which has hosted several big events, including the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2007.

Cycling Mandatory Training JOSEP MATEU, the president of the RACC, in his presentation of the third RACC Urban Cyclist Barometer in Barcelona, raised the issue of whether people might soon need to take some sort of test before they are allowed to ride a bicycle in the streets.

It is a known fact that since the beginning of the pandemic, the use of bicycles soared - in some cities such as Madrid and Barcelona above 100 per cent during the deescalation months - to the point many bike suppliers ran out of stock.

Mr Mateu said he thought that there was definitely the need to promote training and knowledge of urban traffic regulations among cyclists and scooter users, and has proposed the creation of a ‘titulin’ or compulsory card which certifies the rider has at least basic knowledge and skills.

He said the results of a survey, showed 38 per cent of cyclists admitted to having no knowledge of the traffic regulations, 36 per cent used some type of headphones while cycling, and 24 per cent admitted using their mobile phones.

Health Ministry Report SPAIN’S Ministry of Health has just published its seventh update on the vaccination strategy that was approved on Tuesday, May 11, by the Public Health Commission.

The Ministry says it believes that the AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines can be ad‐ ministered to people with a history or risk factors of thrombosis‐blood clots, but advises against them for those with a history of thrombocy‐ topenia (low platelets) in‐ duced by the anticoagulant heparin.

They believe that these pa‐ tients have already developed antibodies against the PF4‐ heparin complex and “there could be a greater risk of gen‐ erating antibodies against the complex PF4‐component of the vaccine involved,” given the similarity of their patho‐ genesis.

This fresh update and advice includes pregnant women and minors between the ages of 12 and 15 in vulnerable and high‐ risk situations. In the update of the vaccination strategy, it was also recalled that the teaching staff of pre‐school, primary, and secondary education have already been prioritised to be vaccinated, not only with re‐ spect to the rest of the popula‐ tion but also, of other teaching staff such as high school and high school university, to pro‐ tect them while teaching in the classroom surrounded by chil‐ dren and adolescents.

FluBot Police Warning Issued POLICE in Spain have issued a FluBot virus alert. The virus arrives

by SMS and can take over control of your mobile phone, and steal information including your banking details.

The FluBot is a dangerous Trojan virus and to date a minimum of 60,000 Android devices have been attacked across the world. In Spain this has forced both National Police and the Mossos d’Esquadra to take to social media platforms in order to warn people about the malicious SMS message.

FluBot has been seen in various countries around the world but has mainly cropped up in Spain, Germany, Italy, Hungary, the UK and in Poland. This does not mean that it will not be spreading to other countries around the globe though.

The virus arrives on your phone by an SMS message alleging to be from a delivery company including Correos along with FedEx and DHL. In the message it is claimed that a package has been received and that the user needs to click on a link. At this point a fake tracking app is installed on the mobile device which sets out to steal personal data and credentials from the victim.

The malware app steals both credentials and user’s contact details and then sends them to a remote server. The Trojan does not stop here though as it steals your contacts so it can then send infected SMS messages to all your friends and family. So far it is believed that around 11 million phone numbers have been collected in this manner.

It is recommended that an antivirus app should be installed on mobile devices and that SMS links should not be clicked on.

Consum has good 2020

GENERAL DIRECTOR: Juan Luis Durich announced the company’s 2020 figures.

THE supermarket chain Con‐ sum which has a major pres‐ ence in Valencia, Murcia and Catalonia announced 2020 turnover of €3.3249 billion, 13.3 per cent more than the previous year.

According to General Direc‐ tor of the cooperative, Juan Luis Durich overall growth dur‐ ing the year was 10.4 per cent which is 7 per cent more than the average for the food distri‐ bution sector in Spain and profits reached €65.5 million.

The organisation is commit‐ ted to expand the number of Consum and Charter stores and also to build its online presence which is currently running at a loss with turnover of just €44.5 million.

The year 2020 was a much better one than originally fore‐ cast and turnover benefited from the lockdown with more customers visiting town and

city‐based outlets even though typical holiday destinations saw a reduction in sales.

The cooperative is now the sixth largest supermarket chain in Spain and its 2020 figures showed greater growth than many of its com‐ petitors which is why it is committed to continue to ex‐ pand with at least 37 new su‐ permarkets opening in 2021, together with a refurbish‐ ment of 44.

It currently employs 17,386 members of staff (an increase of 1,355 over 2019) of which some 72 per cent are women and 92 per cent are on some form of permanent contract.

Like John Lewis & Partners in the UK, staff are also owners of the business and in 2020, Consum distributed €71.5 mil‐ lion shared between worker members and bonuses.

Violence is never the answer

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT DELIGHTED to see the opening of the GB News channel is now imminent. Andrew Neil, who left the BBC under a cloud after his popular show was dropped by the BBC, is spearheading this new channel, which promises to appeal to the ‘broad, proportionate spectrum of everyday people’ and to broadcast its news content with impartiality rather than the ‘biased woke wonders at the anti‐British BBC.’ The channel will broadcast for 24 hours and is being received with great enthusiasm by the general public.

Thousands of Tweets have been posted; large numbers have accused the BBC of being out of touch with the larger portion of the British public. Others have pointed out that its reversed racism policies are so woke orientated it is driving the people to despair. Well I can’t wait either.

Sky news is no better. I see no reason why GB News shouldn’t take millions of viewers from both of these left wing leaning programmes. Let’s hope they will finally be able to overcome the bias and stifling of the freedom of speech, which has been gagging the true feelings and

They could start with a fair assessment of the tragic Israeli Palestine conflict, which has once again erupted into open bloody warfare. I’m not going to go into the whole history, or indeed give any views on this border/state issue; it is much too complex and would take far too long.

What I have witnessed once again is the

utterly biased reporting from the BBC. Without doubt, were Israel not the possessors of their anti‐missile defences, the sheer numbers of rockets launched indiscriminately into the country by Hamas, would by now have killed or maimed thousands of their citizens. Israel retaliated to the first onslaught from Hamas, by firing back as discriminately as possible against an enemy that uses

mainly civilian areas to launch its attacks.

Without the protection of an anti‐ missile system, of course the Palestinians are receiving far higher numbers of casualties than the Israelis. The BBC has pounced on these figures, presenting a constant stream of biased propaganda to once again demonstrate the ‘unfair’ superiority of ‘bullying’ Israeli which is costing the lives of so many innocent

women and children in Palestine.

Almost every report that comes out shows the carnage and destruction being wrought on the Palestinian people. Far less reporting comes out of Israel and if it does it is often carefully vetted to show leading Israeli figures reiterating their intention to ‘wipe out the threat of Hamas’ altogether.

Well, let us all hope and pray the awful escalation of this conflict is reversed as quickly as possible and the tragic loss of civilian lives halted before too many more women and children give their lives to a cause which will NEVER be resolved by violence. Dialogue is the only way out of this awful bloody mire, but with the Arab population committed to the complete destruction of the state of Israel, frankly I don’t hold too much hope for any of that in the foreseeable future.

Boris’s problem is that he’s a Marmite figure. You either love him or loathe him ‐ he’s either an election winner or spinner of tales. Take your pick.

WITH Boris Johnson reportedly preparing for a decade‐long premiership after the re‐ cent series of historic Tory victories in Labour’s former heartlands, voters seem to have forgiven him for ‘Paper‐gate’ and the questions asked about the ‘lavish spending’ on redecorating his Westmin‐ ster flat.

I don’t know where you stand on this, but it has certainly led to a war of words.

There are those who maintain the PM’s job is the most underpaid in the country given his relative accountabilities and responsi‐ bilities. And for someone who could earn more in other ways (writing etc) and has commitments based on that earning pow‐ er, it’s a real and challenging pay cut.

We should pay our PMs, they maintain, a salary commensurate with their responsi‐ bilities, and certainly more than head teachers and senior civil servants. And defi‐

On the other side of the argument are those who maintain Boris took the job knowing the salary (£157,372 or five times the average wage), since topped up with royalties from his books (reportedly amounting to about £25,000 since he be‐ came prime minister). Plus, he and his fi‐

ancée apparently own two houses which presumably could be sold if he were in dire straits.

MARBELLA MOMENTS

BY NICOLE KING I STRUGGLED with my conscience last week; all I wanted to write about was the amazing time I had in Mijas and yet I felt compelled to also talk about the donkeys.

I had so much feedback: Most com‐ mented that they thought this situation had been resolved; as did I. Many re‐ marked that they avoid Mijas for this very reason. Obviously this ‘out of sight out of mind’ mentality isn’t working.

I understand that various people have made it their mission to try and get the conditions improved but were faced with quite unpleasant conse‐ quences for their efforts. I certainly don’t want to take on any more cru‐ sades or get ‘into it’ with anyone.

I don’t know what to say or do about the animal rights situation but what I do know is that in the meanwhile as they sort it out, this historical white vil‐ lage is still a MUST to visit! I had such an amazing time in Mijas and met such truly nice people, starting off with Eli of the Chocolate Factory‐Museum‐Café where my family and I spent a wonder‐ ful morning. Not visiting wouldn’t be

helping the situation; to the contrary in fact; it’s only because I was there that I could see it for myself.

I also saw that it’s a fabulous place to #staycation. As I said last week I went for one evening and stayed for three days and nights and I’m planning my return visit. My intention is to again stay over and really enjoy the privilege of just being in such a quaint and au‐ thentic national treasure.

The village is also ideal for families and young children as there are great parks and squares and many pedestri‐ an areas, which help conserve that cosy and antiquated feel wherever you go.

I hadn’t been to Mijas much previ‐ ously so I can’t compare what it was like before, but as it is now it’s well worth the trip for the views and every‐ thing else. It was like stepping into an‐ other world; a refreshing change from the fast life of our beautiful Marbella and so easy and quick to get to. What’s more it costs just €1 for parking for 24

I thought long and hard before even mentioning the unmentionable last week, only because I didn’t want to do a disservice to the wonderful business‐ es up there who certainly deserve our patron, but I did have to say something.

This week I feel equally compelled to follow up and reiterate that Mijas is a must and memorable for many good reasons that you should check out for yourselves. If you feel inclined to follow up with the town hall for any reason while you’re there, there’s that option too; something might stick.

To conclude I can personally recom‐ mend the places I went to: Sea to Sky Suites, Tapinxos, Koko, Meguiñez, Chema’s Terrace and make, eat and drink chocolate at Eli’s Chocolate Facto‐ ry‐Museum‐Café; where, for me, it all began.

Some silly recommendations MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’M back. I needed a break, not from being grumpy, just from everything that’s going on at the moment, especially the way governments, politicians and all the TV experts are making some very vulnerable people terrified to do anything. Stop brainwashing people!

Let me give you an example. I went to a funeral last week and, as funerals go, it was very unusual as everyone was to wear bright clothes and treat it as a celebration of the life of our friend. When we went inside there was seating for about 20 people and the rest of the pews had red and white tape criss-crossed over them. I was in my wheelchair so I was OK but there was a lady looking for somewhere to sit. So I said to her, sit there and she said, oh no I can’t, it’s got tape round it. So I said, yes it’s a bit of tape, move it, it’s not an electrified fence!

A couple of weeks ago I questioned the real use of Bitcoin and cyber-crime and hey ho this week in the USA, Colonial Pipeline Co paid nearly $5 million to Eastern European hackers, contradicting earlier reports that the company had no intention of paying an extortion fee to help restore the country’s largest fuel pipeline.

The hefty ransom was paid in difficult-to-trace cryptocurrency hours after the attack, underscoring the immense pressure faced by the Georgia-based operator to get gasoline and jet fuel flowing again to major cities along the Eastern Seaboard. A person, familiar with the situation, said US government officials are aware that Colonial made the payment.

Once they received the payment, the hackers provided the operator with a decrypting tool to restore its disabled computer network. Apparently the tool was so slow that the company continued using its own backups to help restore the system. Did they waste $5m? The fact is if cryptocurrency didn’t exist this couldn’t happen.

See maybe this silly old fool does get the occasional thing right.

It’s hard to see strained ligaments so X‐rays (and MRIs) are looking for some‐

thing broken.

If it’s not broken then RELAX! Go home, rest the foot for 24 hours and apply ICE. What Next?

My test model, a (very) mildly sporty ST‐Line X Edi‐ tion, provides a slightly low‐ er and firmer suspension but nothing extra under the bonnet, but the Focus can still make the winding road home something to antici‐ pate with relish.
