Plans for cheaper tests HELPING THE VULNERABLE THE EWN’s campaign to urge the UK government to lower the costs of PCR tests so Brits in Spain can see their loved ones again has seen success after a Minister confirmed plans for cheaper tests.

After writing to the Department for Transport, the EWN’s CEO Michel Euesden has since received a reply from the UK’s Minister for Aviation, Robert Courts MP announcing plans for the government to help lower test costs.

Writing to Michel Euesden, the minister said: “I am sorry to hear the cost of PCR tests has caused concern for your readers.”

He added: “The Govern-

“We will work with the travel industry and private testing providers ahead of international travel reopening to see how we can further reduce the cost of travel for the British public while ensuring travel is as safe as possible.

“This could include cheaper tests when holidaymakers re-

turn home, as well as whether the government would be able to provide pre-departure tests.”

Responding to Michel’s concerns that the price of PCR tests can reach £214 (€245), Mr Courts added information to help travellers find the cheapest tests.

He said: “Individuals are encouraged to conduct their own research about available providers, the tests they supply and their terms and conditions of sale. THANKS to a recent financial donation from the German Foundation ‘Bonnik Hansen Stiftung’ to Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, the Soroptimists will be able to continue with their weekly delivery of fresh fruits, vegetables and eggs to the municipal foodbank for at least another six months. The foodbank is run by the Red Cross in Mijas in collaboration with the Social Services of Mijas Town Hall. More than 400 vulnerable families are being supported at the moment.

Mr Bonnik Hansen and his wife Helene, founders of the foundation visited the Red Cross installations in Las Lagunas, Mijas, last week. They were received and showed around by the councillor of Social Services, Hipolito Zapico, the Red Cross Technician, Ander Echebarria, Soroptimist International Costa del Sol members and Red Cross volunteers.

“We started up last year in April because of the acute need for support for the families who lost their income due to the Covid pandemic, a situation which is still very serious,” said Daphne Theunissen, SI Costa del Sol Vice-President.

On Sunday April 25, one of Marbella and Malaga’s favourite sons was seen enjoying a se‐ lection of food at Asian Fusion restaurant ABA in Estepona’s Urb La Pilar.

Quite recognisable, the celebrity chef was able to sit with two friends chatting and sam‐ pling a number of different dishes created by Vietnamese chef patron Aba without being bothered by any of the other guests at the restaurant.

As he left, he was happy to pose with Aba and partner for the exclusive photograph repro‐ duced here and was possibly thinking of one of his earlier observations when he said “shop lo‐ cal, cook global.”

Indie rock and pop GET ready to rock out in Estepona as the council brings a range of indie and pop bands to light up hopefully warm August nights at the Ventolera Festival.

Barcelona band Dorian stands out as being particularly popular and they now have a following not just in Spain but internationally with their seven albums which take in new wave, electronic music and indie rock.

With their first two concerts of the year already sold out, tickets for the Estepona gig on August 12 where they will be supported by their friend Leo López performing

Genome Sequencing on virus THE Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) will soon be carrying out whole genome se‐ quencing on the SARS‐CoV 2 virus that causes Covid‐19.

The service will be located at the GHA’s Covid Laboratory currently located at the University of Gibraltar which was set up to undertake Covid screening tests and the lab is already staffed by senior scientists with extensive Molecular Biol‐

ogy Experience.

Dr Nick Cortes, GHA Consultant Medical Microbiologist who leads the project said: “The Gibraltar Covid Lab is currently in the process of enrolling as a member of a UK genome sequencing consortium (COG‐UK) based at Cambridge University.

“The team will be sharing all the virus sequences obtained in Gibraltar with the consortium and in that way contribute to

the worldwide knowledge of Covid vari‐ ants and patterns of transmission.”

His colleague Dr Cassaglia, explained, “Until now, the GHA have sent a number of positive samples to Public Health Eng‐ land reference laboratories in the UK. The results have taken up to two months to be reported due to a backlog caused by the large number of sequences being carried out in the UK.

Rockin Marbella Charity Market postponed Race Jamboree ROCKABILLY won’t be returning to Torremolinos this year as the organisers of the annual Rockin Race Jamboree Festival are postponing the event until 2022.

The 27th Jamboree was due to take place in May, but al‐ though organisers held out until the last minute to see how the pandemic and restrictions were changing, they decided that for everyone’s safety that the event should not go ahead.

The Rockin Race in Torre‐ molinos is one of the most im‐ portant music festivals on the Costa del Sol and in 2020, more than 15,000 people participat‐ ed, with concerts on the stages of the Prince of Asturias Audito‐ rium and the Hotel La Barracu‐ da, as well as open events in other areas of the town.

Doggies in the well

ONE lucky dog has some good Samaritans, Local Po‐ lice and firefighters to thank for its life after falling in‐ to an almost inaccessible well near to the Rio Benabo‐ la in San Pedro Alcantara on Monday April 26.

Having alerted the emergency services to the plight of the dog, first on the scene were Marbella Local Po‐ lice but they were unable to access the well itself and had to await the arrival of the fire brigade and kept the dog afloat by using pool poles and a rope.

When the fire brigade arrived, the officers first of all had to clear the area using a chain saw to gain access and then used an extendable ladder to rescue the dog.

Once out of the well it was taken to local GreenVet San Pedro where it was given a check‐up including an X‐ray, found to be unharmed and later that day was claimed.

Cable Beach survey

CONCRETE TOWER: All this is left.

CABLE Beach in Marbella is named after the over‐ head cable which used to transport buckets of iron ore from the Peñoncillo mine in Sierra Blanca to ships moored offshore.

All that remains is a large concrete tower sit‐ ting in the sea off the beach which is now inop‐ erative and only had a life of around four years from 1957 until the mine closed.

Now the council is wait‐ ing to receive the results of a specially commissioned structural survey which will determine the neces‐ sary measures for its reha‐ bilitation and enhance‐ ment.

Announcing this, Mayor Ángeles Muñoz, said “our objective is to preserve an iconic structure of the city so that, despite the fact that it is still state‐owned, we are taking all the steps to have a project perfectly that guarantees its main‐ tenance and avoids any problem with the founda‐ tion.”

The company responsi‐ ble for completing the sur‐ vey was given a technical and photographic report of the tower, which had been prepared by the Marbella Firefighters aquatic unit and their rec‐ ommendations are ex‐ pected shortly, but as the council spent some €130,000 in conservation work in 2017, it is hoped that no major repair work will be required.

G I B R A LT A R’S first human corneal transplant was performed on March 19 this year and news of this has just been revealed by the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA).

Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr Magdalena Popiela, carried out the surgery together with the G H A ophthalmic nursing team at St Bernard’s Hospital.

The GHA’s Ophthalmic Department, under the lead of Dr Popiela, worked closely with Venice Eye Bank in Italy to source the corneal donor tissue.

Venice to Gibraltar in 24 hours, with the help of HM Customs and DHL Gibraltar, for the surgery to take place as planned.

Corneal transplants are required when corneal disease causes reduction in vision. In

the past, such transplants have been undertaken in the UK. Patients would have had to remain in the U K for a few weeks immediately after surgery and attend fairly frequent follow-ups thereafter.

OLIVIA’S LA CALA: The interior of the building has been completely burned out.

IT hardly seemed credible when news broke in the early morning of Monday April 26 that Olivia’s restaurant in La Cala de Mijas was on fire, but it was and within hours had been de‐ stroyed.

Emergency services attended the scene at around 5.30am and the fire took several hours to extinguish leaving the roof caved in and the interior of the building completely burned out.

For hours, celebrity own‐ er Elliott Wright and his staff were unable to enter the scene until such time as it was safe to do so and once he was able to get in, he managed to secure the CCTV security footage showing that the fire was deliberately started and this evidence has been handed over to the po‐ lice to investigate further.

Speaking to Euro Weekly News, Elliott, who is understandably overwhelmed by the event said “We have the scum bags on camera and the police are actively seeking these people.”

He went on to say that whatever happens “I’m already planning the full opening by the end of June with maybe the terrace (which was largely untouched) opening sooner, maybe within three weeks.

“With the help of everyone, Olivia’s will be born again, rising like a Phoenix from the ash‐ es,” he added.

Elliott wished to express his appreciation of all of the messages of support and offers of as‐ sistance that he has already received and par‐ ticularly praised the Mijas Council, the police

and Guardia Civil as well as local businesses.

He had nothing but scorn however for so‐ cial media trolls who have suggested that this was a deliberate insurance scam, adding “I had a full refurb in January 2020 and who would do this two weeks before the tourists come? It’s a disgrace that people kick you when you are down!”

Of course, the last 12 months have been very difficult and although he kept the restaurant open when not prohibited due to the State of Alarm, business was much slower without tourist visitors.

All of this whilst he was very aware that his father Ed‐ die’s illness was getting no better and he told this writer “I am devastated with what we are going through as a family, having to bury my father last week, then to be under attack the follow‐ ing week and see my business go up in smoke has been the toughest thing I probably will ev‐ er have to deal with, but I will get through it and won’t let it beat me.”

Elliott Wright is certainly determined and as a popular local figure and entrepreneur, we can only wish him well in rebuilding the restaurant named after his daughter Olivia and hope that whoever caused the fire is quickly caught and charged.

Reunited with ring TWELVE months after losing a ring she bought with her first pay packet 30 years ago, Hellen Miles in EL Secadero, Casares, has been reunited with the ‘sentimental’ piece of jewellery.

Hellen believed her three-colour gold ring had accidentally been lost in rubbish thrown away in November 2018, but there was little she could do at the time.

However, in March 2019, the Costa del Sol Environmental Complex opened its Lost Property Office, and she completed a lost property form online and provided photographs to prove ownership should she get lucky.

Incredibly, she did, and the tiny piece of jewellery was located and she is once again wearing it on her little finger.

“It is a ring that I bought 30 years ago with my first pay packet and it has a lot of sentimental value for me,” she said; while revealing how surprised she is “that such a small piece could have been located among the waste from the entire Costa del Sol.”

There are many things on offer for you to participate in, or if you prefer you can just meet up with friends and enjoy a social chit chat!

Activities on offer are: Beginners Spanish Class (Tuesdays), Chair Aerobics Class (Tuesdays) taken by a qualified personal trainer and of course always available is the popular game of Dominoes, both Classic and Maltese Cross. On the first Thursday of each month, there is a group singalong with a pianist and guitarist, the next one being on Thursday May 6.

We also have a very friendly Information and Advice Volunteer who attends these meetings and can help out with many different types of queries, such as TIE applications, NIE questions, utility bills, arranging medical appointments etc.

Local Hero Saves Two Children BUSINESS owner Marco has received thanks and praise from across the community after saving the lives of two Spanish children in the sea in Benalmadena.

Speaking to the Euro Weekly News, Marco, the owner of La Fiesta bar in Benalmadena, explained he had been on the beach opposite Hotel Triton when the dramatic rescue took place.

He said: “I sat down by the sea and by chance I heard someone shouting ‘save me’ in Spanish.

“I turned and saw that two children, a boy and a girl, were in the water.

“Their father was further away and did not know what had happened, so without thinking about anything, and even though I am not very a very good swimmer, I took my belongings out of my pockets and ran into the sea to save them.”

Marco, 37, whose real name is Mohammad Maleki but is known by the nickname around Benalmadena, said: “The water was not deep where the boy was, but when I began looking for the daughter it was deeper.”

“I got the son but to get to the daughter was a bit harder because of the rocks, but I eventually got them both and dragged them out of the sea.

“The father then ran towards me and did not know what had happened.”

He said the children had almost drowned and that both had swallowed a lot of water.

Marco said: “The children almost drowned. Another two minutes and they could have died.”

He said the father “couldn’t thank me enough” and that he offered to give Marco, whose clothes were now soaking wet, a lift in his car.

Marco said he turned down the offer as he had his bike, only to find that he had lost his keys during the rescue, leaving him to walk through the streets of Benalmadena with wet clothes.

During the brave act, Marco also sustained injuries to his hands and legs on the rocks, but says he is no hero and simply wants to warn other parents of the dangers of the water for unaccompanied children.

The bar owner explained

that he is well-known locally, especially with Britons, and that his story has taken off online, with many calling him a hero and praising his bravery.

He told the Euro Weekly News: “I am not a hero. Everyone needs to do what they can to help each other.”

He said that he is simply, “very pleased that I could save the lives of two children,” however.

He warned locals and tourists: “My advice to parents is that they do not leave children on the beach. The sea is not as shallow as they think.”

He added: “I want to tell everyone because Benalmadena is quiet at the moment and everyone is coming to swim, but they need to be careful with kids, it can be very dangerous.”

Marco is now advising all parents to accompany their children to the sea ahead as tourism begins to open up this summer.

Funds for Charity M I JA S H O U S E H A S H H A R R I E R S, a local group of walkers do not take life too seriously until it comes to their annual Charity Run. This year to celebrate their 32nd anniversary, a marathon event is planned for Saturday May 15 in aid of two important local chari‐ ties, Positively Pink and Positively Blue, who work tirelessly to support those who suffer with breast and prostate cancer.

The Hashers, as they are collectively known, invite you to join them in a challenge run/walk of 32km starting on the outskirts of Alhaurin going along a fabulously scenic rural trail through the mountains in Mijas with stunning views down to the coast.

For those who feel the marathon challenge may be a step too far for them, shorter routes will also be available and these will be pub‐ lished on our web page. This will mean that as many people as possible can take part on

this fun, fundraising day.

The first 60 to register will receive an event t‐shirt kindly donated by Tikiboo.

You never know, after sampling the enthu‐ siasm and humour of the Hashers on the day, some may decide to come along each Sunday to join the group on their regular afternoon runs.

Along the route there will be drink and nib‐ ble stops provided to keep up stamina and there is sure to be plenty of fun to be had by all.

Are you one of the vociferous minority insulted by the word expatriate?

THE world is full of armchair experts who delight in trying to correct others and the latest target for them is use of the word expatriate for someone who lives in another country.

Like many other words in English, it has Latin roots, uniting Ex (out of) and Patria (native country or fatherland).

There is little doubt that when one writes about a British expat or expatriate in Spain then the vast majority of English-speaking readers will immediately and correctly recognise who is being referred to and let’s face it, language is all about ease of understanding.

The naysayers, argue that the word is demeaning and racist because it was originally applied to white Europeans and their families who were often sent abroad to work in the Colonies for a defined length of time.

They go on to insist that those who are not white are disparagingly referred to as migrants or immi-

grants when they in fact have as much right to be called expats as anyone else living abroad.

It has to be admitted that there is certainly an element of truth in that

protestation if it is intentionally used to disparage or insult another person, but many people understand who is being referred to when such words are used.

There is no doubt that the use and meaning of words change over time and perfect examples are both ‘sick’ meaning good and ‘gay’ referring to a sexual preference and it is

now absolutely unacceptable to use the ‘N’ word in any circumstance.

When one refers to British expats, there is no way that it is race or gender specific as it purely refers to someone who was born in Britain and has moved to another country, in this case Spain, therefore to suggest that it is insulting is plainly nonsense, unless a specific person is identified.

All newspapers try to make any article as easily understandable as possible and therefore this writer for one will continue not to raid the dictionary for words that nobody understands and will use expatriate when it fits better than ‘UK passport holder now residing in Spain who may or may not eventually return to the fatherland.’

Naturally, if a reader is able to provide a word as an alternative which the majority of English speakers would immediately recognise as referring to British in Spain, then is something that the EWN writers would be happy to review seriously.

Digital Certificate ACE animal shelter FERNANDO VALDES VERELST, the Spanish tourism minister, speaking at the World Travel and Tourism Council’s summit in Mexico, said, “June will be the start of the recovery of tourism in Spain. By then, we will have a digital vaccination certificate in place and we will be able to reopen our borders.”

Those were the words of a man who is at the centre of all the travel negotiations going on between Spain and Britain regarding holidays and travel to Spain this summer, and you can hear him talk about it in the video below.

MEMBERS of the Rotary Club Mijas International visited the Ace Animal Shelter Mijas to deliver 210 vaccines for Rabies and Kennel cough for the abandoned dogs at the shelter who need to be vaccinated before adoption.

In the recent stormy weather part of the shelter was flooded and the dogs staying there were in danger, with damage to the building and the food supply and the sad death of 22 animals.

The cost of treatment was way above budget as many dogs needed medication and the massive impact of corona and the unpredictable health crises is having on the charity’s vital work with funds greatly reduced.

President Declares Borders Now Open

JUANMA MORENO: Andalucians free to move around.

THE Chairman of the Board has announced that mobility between the provinces in Andalucia will be allowed from today, Thursday, April 29. “All Andalucians are free to move within our autonomous community to go to the countryside or to the beach,” said Juanma Moreno.

After midnight on Wednesday, you will be able to move throughout Andalucia. Mobility between provinces is allowed, although the perimeter closure of the community, the regional borders, and the curfew remain at 11pm. The Chairman of the Board, Juanma Moreno, appeared live on TV at 8.30pm in San Telmo after the meeting of the committee of experts.

Commercial, leisure, and hospitality activity is also allowed until 10.30pm, current capacity is maintained and municipalities with rates of 500 and 1,000 infections will maintain the current restrictions.

Simply Surviving events SIMPLY SURVIVING events have been raising more money for charities. This charitable Facebook page supports a nominated charity each month and their membership has grown rapidly to almost 600.

This month’s charity, The Food Fairies (Asociacion Hadas Karadas) will shortly be preRicky Lavazza. sented with €700 to add to the €300 of food donated by their members. This will be vital in their constant efforts to provide food parcels to Costa del Sol families currently struggling to feed themselves. Last week a Simply Surviving Group lunch and concert were held at Restaurant La Sierra in Cerros de Aguila, Mijas where a sell-out audience was treated to ‘Curtain Up’, a fabulous show put together by ever-popular entertainer Ricky Lavazza and wonderfully supported by Juliet Williams, Gemma Lloyd and Emma Louise. A standing ovation summed up the day perfectly.

The event was planned and arranged by Val Williams the founder of the Simply Surviving Group for her birthday in February but had to be postponed because of the pandemic. Her wish was to arrange an event to celebrate her birthday for the benefit of the restaurant, the entertainers who have been so badly hit by the pandemic and for the benefit of all the group supporting Simply Surviving but wasn’t a fundraising event as such. The chosen charity for May is Last Chance Animal Rescue who are regularly rehoming stray or abandoned dogs.

5,000 new Jobs LEROY MERLIN, the French multinational that specialises in DIY, construction, decoration, and gardening, is preparing a job hiring campaign throughout Spain. Most of the positions will be con‐ centrated in the Community of Madrid and Andalucia, with 1,500 and 700 vacancies respectively.

Almost 2,000 prospective job seekers have already entered the selection processes for the summer period. Andalucia espe‐ cially relies heavily on foreign tourism and this is seen as a way of breaking out of that stranglehold. Unemployment in the winter months is a common problem in the tourist areas of Spain and mainly affects teenagers who work under temporary contracts through the summer, as soon as winter approaches and tourists leave then they, the teenagers etc, are out of work until the next summer.

Hiring will begin in the month of May and last until the end of August. It should also be noted that the offers change depending on the area, requiring experts in carpentry, gardening or DIY de‐ pending on the section in which the position is required. THE Phone House chain of mobile telephone stores in Spain was hit by the ‘Babuk’ ransomware cyberattack on Sunday April 11, but did not become public until April 21, and now, reportedly, the instigators of the attack claim to have published data on the dark web of 13 million customers who were on the company’s database.

The company assured that no ransom was paid to the cybercriminals, on the advice of cybersecurity experts, Hispasec, who claim that giving in to such de-

mands only leads to funding more similar attacks, and still does not guarantee that the criminals would not publish the stolen data anyway.

Around 13 million customers’ personal information was stored on the Phone House’s servers, including full names, addresses, date of birth, email address, telephone contact number, home address, nationality, as well as bank account details, passport or identity document information, and the IMEI codes of all the devices sold to those customers.

Staff Reduction FOLLOWING its merger with Bankia, Caixabank is planning to cut 8,291 jobs in the biggest ever staff reduction in Spanish banking, and the third-largest in Spain’s corporate history.

On Tuesday April 20, management informed union leaders about its plans to cut employee numbers by 18.7 per cent to 36,109, down from 44,000. Not only this, over 1,500 branches representing 27 per cent of the total will be closed.

The same day María Jesús Montero, Spain’s finance minister and government spokesperson said the number of job cuts would be higher. She also called the plans “bad news” at a time when the government is making “Herculean efforts” to preserve jobs through ERTE schemes and avoid the level of unemployment figures that were seen during the 2008 crisis.

Mass Events Unlimited SPAIN’S central government said it is NOT willing to enforce a limit on mass events when the State of Alarm ends on May 9.

Carolina Darias, the Minister of Health, guarantees that a draft Public Health Commission document on the banning of mass gatherings depending on the incidence rate in the province will only be a guide for regional governments so that measures can be standard‐ ised throughout the country, but “in no case will we try to force the regions to follow these recommendations.”

“To recommend is not to prohibit. This type of event is the responsibility of the re‐ gions,” the minister said.

The Public Health Commis‐ sion proposal, which is still be‐ ing debated, will establish four levels according to the cumula‐ tive incidence rate of the province.

Numbers to get the Jab THE Junta de Andalucia’s Ministry of Health department has issued a list of telephone numbers for people in the 75 to 79 years of age group who have not yet received their first coronavirus vaccination dose, but would like to get it.

According to regional government figures, 85 per cent of the people in this age group have already been vaccinated with at least one dose of a vaccine, but now they are looking for the remaining 15 per cent, who might have missed their appointment for any reason if maybe their contact information is not up-to-date or they have missed their appointment call for any other reasons.

The majority of people in this age group have reportedly received the Pfizer vaccine first dose, although some have also received the Moderna vaccine, depending on availability at the time of the appointment.

Aid to Pensioners MALAGA has announced plans to offer €200 a year in housing aid to pensioners and the unem‐ ployed.

According to Spanish newspaper Sur, this sub‐ sidy replaces the one that until 2020 was grant‐ ed to families with low incomes, offering €200.

Malaga City Council will offer the grant to cover IBI (property tax) payments to those whose income is less than €960.33 a month after the measure was approved by a council meeting.

According to the councillor for Economy, Car‐ los Conde, this new regulation will provide fi‐ nancial help to around 7,000 people, including pensioners and the unemployed.

The aid offered by Malaga Council has a bud‐ get of €1.4 million and can be increased depend‐ ing on the number of people applying for it.

The news comes after Andalucia approved a measure to grant up to € 200,000 in aid to hotels in a major boost for tourism ahead of the sum‐ mer.

Nightclubs Reopen Sala Golf days are back IN a major boost to Costa del Sol businesses, the regional government of Malaga has allowed night venues such as nightclubs to reopen after months of having the blinds drawn.

Following several requests by business owners, the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, and the councillor for Commerce and Public Roads, Elisa Pérez de Siles, met with nightlife represen-

tatives and agreed to reopen the venues under the same guidelines and regulations as bars, restaurants and cafes.

According to Pérez de Siles, the establishments will be closely monitored and will have to strictly stick to a number of safety measures, forcing them to operate more like mainstream bars and restaurants than nightlife venues.

Unfortunately, the changes have come far too late for many nightlife venues, according to a spokesperson for one of the groups, Pedro Marín, who claims that some 30 per cent of discos and nightclubs in Malaga will never reopen.

ONE sign of a steady return to normality is the fact that the popular Sala Golf events are back on the programme of things to do on the Costa del Sol. Their second golf day this year took place on the Los Flamingos, Villa Padierna course last Saturday April 24 and happily the golfing gods were smiling as the bad weather that preceded and followed was banished and the entire day was marked with clear blue skies and plenty of sun.

Noise is harmful

IN anticipation of International Noise Awareness Day which took place on April 28, the Spanish Acoustic Society issued a plea to the Spanish Government to meet its European Union noise obli‐ gations.

Antonio Pedrero González, President of the Spanish Acoustic Society explained that noise pollution is one of the most impor‐ tant environmental problems in today’s society.

Contrary to what some might think, environmental noise not only supposes a loss of comfort in the affected people, but it con‐ stitutes a serious public health problem, which affects a large number of people.

According to data from the European Environment Agency, prolonged exposure to environmental noise causes 12,000 pre‐ mature deaths each year in Europe and contributes to 48,000 new cases of ischemic (coronary) heart disease.

It is also estimated that 22 million people are considered high‐ ly affected by noise and 6.5 million people suffer from chronic sleep disorders from this cause.

New addition to the league Matt Nuttall took home the wooden spoon trophy for the first time, and accepted it like a PRO! So far, Sala Golf has raised more than €3,000 for their charity, The Elena Gaite Foundation.

EWN speaks exclusively to Motocross World Champion WHEN you are just 20 years old and already a three-time world champion in your sport, having to take a year off is a nightmare.

This is what has happened to Spanish motocross rider Jorge Prado who has been unable to compete in any races since the lockdown.

Considered by many as the motocross equivalent to Lewis Hamilton, having started riding at the age of three, Jorge was very modest when speaking exclusively to Euro Weekly News about the comparison, saying “I can see why people say that, but I only hope that I can be as successful as Lewis over a long period of time.”

Motocross is a form of offroad motorcycle racing held on enclosed off-road circuits. The sport evolved from motorcycle trials competitions held in the United Kingdom as early as 1909, but its competitive home is now Belgium.

Jorge was born in Galicia and was so impressed by his father’s love for motor cycles that he just wanted to learn to ride

himself and his wish was granted when he was presented with his own miniature bike at the age of three and since then he has found incredible success in his sport.

As he grew, so did his bikes and eventually the family moved to Belgium to be close to the main practice tracks and the top competitors and teams.

Since that time, Jorge has done pretty well with an incredible record of growth and success: European and World Champion at 65cc in 2011 at the age of 10 years and eight months.

European Champion at 125 cc, in 2015 at the age of 14, being the youngest champion ever in the category.

In 2018, he became MX2 motocross world champion at the age of 17 and repeated that achievement the following year aged 18.

found it a little difficult to adjust to living in a colder climate with a less relaxed style when com-

pared to Spain, but he was quickly signed up by the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team

with whom he is contracted until 2023, even though he was their youngest ever rider.

From Belgium, his family moved to Rome with its more Latin way of life, but when asked whether he drives in Italy’s busy city, he smiled and shook his head, explaining that was too ambitious even for him.

The last year has seen Jorge in training, getting fitter and mastering his riding techniques ready for the first race of 2021, which he hopes will be in June and which should then take him off around the world.

With regards to whether he enjoyed so much travel he said “It is very intense with no time to go sightseeing and with the pandemic, I know it’s going to be even tougher with the need to obey all of the rules of hygiene and distancing.”

When we spoke, he was enjoying a one week stay in Galicia at his grandparents’ house so that he could get to see them and other relatives as well as sponsors since motocross is so popular in the re-

gion that every race is broadcast live on regional TV. Many footballers have their favourite shirt number and Jorge is no different as at an early age he was given 61 in a race that he won and so from then on, he has kept what he considers to be his lucky number.

Summing up has life to date, the very humble young world champion said “Motocross is my life, it’s what I love, I’ve been doing this for many years and I couldn’t do any other sport.”

It’s a daring, high speed adventure and this young man who speaks Spanish, English and Dutch will be doing his best to stay at the top of this exciting sport for years to come.

Spain providing vaccines to Latin America PEDRO SÁNCHEZ, the president of the government, has announced Spain will provide Covid‐19 vaccines to Latin America as soon as conditions of the health emergency make it possible.

Sánchez’s idea is that it will show the country’s “commitment” and “solidarity” to the Ibero‐ American community and that it is necessary to share vaccinations with those countries most in need. The president plans to coordinate with the European Union to ensure vaccines arrive as soon as possible.

Mass Car SORN in Spain EWN previously reported on how millions of vehicle owners could face fines for not having insurance. It has now been announced that thousands of cars in Spain that have not been insured for over 10 years or have not passed their ITV, so-called zombie cars, will be suddenly cancelled by the DGT. The Official State Gazette (BOE) published last week a Royal Decree on end-of-life vehicles that includes, among other new features, the establishment of one year from the date of application for the temporary deregistration of a vehicle.

After this time period, if an extension hasn’t been requested, the car will be in active status again which will mean the corresponding administrative and fiscal obligations, such as the payment of the circulation tax, are to be addressed. The extension may be requested at the Traffic Headquarters and has to be requested no later than two months before the end

date of the temporary deregistration. Many vehicles were temporarily deregistered so that illegal scrapyards could export them or cut them up with a lower tax burden.

Another of the rules included in this Royal Decree is

the obligation to pass an ITV inspection on cars that have been declared a total loss by the insurance company, whether the owner intends to continue with it or for it to be transferred to another owner.

Child Protection Law approved ON Thursday, April 15, the Congress of Deputies in Spain’s lower house of parliament approved a pioneering new child protection law aimed at protecting children and adolescents against violence. The legislation was voted through with an absolute majority of 268 votes to 57 - 16 abstained. The decision was not expected in the current political climate.

British concert pianist, James Rhodes, pioneered the new legislation, known as Rhodes Law, in the defence of children’s rights. Rhodes, a Madrid resident, suffered sexual abuse when he was a boy and has been one of the most public faces pushing for a law to combat violence suffered by youngsters and adolescents.

The child protection law must now be passed in the Senate, where more amendments are likely to be presented. More than 40,000 offences against children were recorded in 2019, and children and adolescents make up nearly half of all sexual abuse victims in Spain.

Competitors had to use measures (jiggers) and were allowed to wear branded uniforms to advertise their workplace or the company they represented. The judging criteria was: Originality 20Pts, Creativity/Presentation 20Pts, Theme/Inspiration 20Pts,

Efficiency / Professionalism 20Pts, Taste 20Pts The cocktails’ requirements: At least 30ml of NERO Vodka had to be used and the cocktail could not use more than six ingredients. Cocktails had to be stirred, shaken, blended, or over ice - hot drinks were not permitted.

There were no regulations regarding the style of the cocktail, and they could have been in the category of long drinks like aperitifs, frozen cocktails, etc…

Any other ingredients such as purees, syrups, bitters, juices could be used - the ingredients could have been either homemade or store-bought.

Any decorations and garnishes must have been edible, otherwise they would not have been considered as ingredients.

Seven flair bartenders from some of the coast’s top establishments, including Max Beach, MAO (the newly opened Chinese restaurant in Max Beach), The Beach House Marbella, The Harbour Marbella, The Playwright and La Sala Marbella were entered and all dazzled the crowd with their flair skills and creations.

As Johnny G announced the first competitor the music was turned up and Jaron Burt for The Harbour took centre stage and set up ready for the timer to start. In order of presentation they were: Jaron - from The Harbour Bar Marbella - named his drink ‘Roasted Peach & Rosemary Sour’.

His drink was in keeping with the theme of the new Chinese restaurant that has recently opened in MAX Beach that is already proving popular with locals and visitors to the area alike and was called ‘Hónghâi.’

After the judges held a 10minute private meeting to discuss the entries the compere called all contestants back to the front of the stage.

Johnny G then announced the third prize was won by Sascha the ‘Showman,’ - a well-deserved round of applause was given by the appreciative crowd.

Johnny then called on Fabricio, who came second, from MAX Beach to collect his prize too - a cocktail mix set.

Butterfly Children’s Charity THE National Health Service has denied home nursing care to sixyear-old twins with Butterfly Skin (Epidermolysis bullosa).

The Butterfly Children’s Charity petitioned the minister for health to request the right to home visits from nursing staff for the six-yearold twins with Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) or Butterfly Skin, in Madrid. EB is a rare, degenerative and currently incurable disease that affects 500 people in Spain.

UK Pensions are Low THE UK’s pensions have been ranked showing that UK pen‐ sioners see some of the highest levels of poverty in the world, sparking debate from expats about whether the UK state pension is enough to live on in Spain.

Following the news that the UK has some of the highest lev‐ els of pensioner poverty, expats in Spain have been debating whether a state pension is enough to live on.

According to the Express newspaper, the UK government produced a briefing paper showing how prevalent ‘pen‐ sioner poverty’ is across the EU and Organisation for Economic Co‐Operation and Develop‐ ment (OECD) countries.

Roderick McInnes, the re‐ port’s writer, said: “The OECD uses a common set of statistical conventions to measure in‐ comes consistently across coun‐ tries to determine the propor‐ tion of the pensioner population in each country liv‐ ing in relative income poverty (defined as having incomes less than 50 per cent of the medi‐ an).

“The proportion of people aged 66 and over living in rela‐

The data showed that UK pensioner property rates were 12.9 per cent for those aged 66 to 75, with those aged over 76 seeing poverty rates rise to 17.8 per cent.

The news has sparked de‐ bate among British expats about whether the average UK state pension of £137.60 (€157.81) a week is enough to live on in Spain.

One reader said: “I think the pension amount is definitely

not enough to live on when you take into account bills, rent and other expenses.”

However, other expats said they were pleased with the amount they receive.

One said: “I paid in for so lit‐ tle time that mine just about pays the phone bill. I am grate‐ ful for it all the same, but that is why I still work.”

Another said: “I receive around £900 (€1,032.16) a month.

“As a pensioner I am more than happy with the latest in‐ crease and the fact that after contributing for more than 40 years I can still receive my UK pension in Spain.”

What many of them have in common is that before hearing this diagnosis they have never heard of the condition or its symptoms. Scoliosis is an S-shaped double curvature of the spine affecting three to four children in every 1,000.

My mother had never heard of scoliosis before the fateful day of my diagnosis.

I often wonder how life might be different if my symptoms had been noticed earlier.

If caught early, it is sometimes possible to correct scoliosis with the use of a back brace and proper exercises.

W hen my scoliosis was discovered at age 15, the condition was already too severe for me to be able to consider this option. My ribs had buckled and twisted giving me a large rib hump.

At 20, I had surgery to prevent my spine from crushing my heart and lungs.

Since then, I have had two further surgeries to help straighten my spine and correct the placement of my ribs.

Advised by doctors and surgeons to train regularly and strengthen my muscles, I became passionate about exercise.

Following this path has truly helped immeasurably with my recovery.

Concerns over PCR cost EASYJET: Carried out a recent poll.

THE figures from a poll carried out by easyJet found that Brits would pay up to €57 for a PCR test, sparking hopes the news could push the government to cap costs and help expats see their loved ones again.

The research also found that the average Brit believes the cost of a PCR test should be re‐ duced to £30 (€34), while 58 per cent of Britons are more likely to take a holiday abroad to low‐risk green countries this summer if the government introduced cheaper lateral flow tests.

New research has found 61 per cent of Brits believe under the traffic light travel system, the green tier should mean restric‐ tion‐free travel this summer.

Which? found the current cost for return travel to Spain could cost up to £330 per per‐ son.

WORLDWIDE SHORTAGE: So much technology relies on microchips.

A COMBINATION of the pan‐ demic, Brexit (for the UK) and a major fire in Japan have led to a massive worldwide short‐ age of microchips.

It may get better in the long term, but in the short term the problem is getting worse which may result in the cost of computers and mobile phones shooting up.

This has been made worse by the increase in home work‐ ers, many of whom have up‐ graded their laptops and PCs so demand has risen faster than production.

5G needs fuel an increase in demand for new mobile phones and there has also been a steady increase in the sale of video games during lockdown What’s more with so many car manufacturers relying on microchips to control the ever more advanced brains of their vehicles, the problem is slow‐

ing down production consider‐ ably.

Indeed Tata, the Indian owners of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), now Britain’s largest car manufacturer have recently announced that because of the shortage of microchips that it will have to suspend produc‐ tion at two of its three UK fac‐ tories.

This slow down would not only affect the company’s rev‐ enue, but could see some form of financial loss for its nearly 6,000 workers if they are forced to work part time.

It’s not just the UK that is suffering as the majority of au‐ to manufacturers in Europe and the USA have reported similar problems especially as the demand for new vehicles is beginning to increase.

The defence was rubbish

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I WAS actually more than a little disturbed about the speed that police officer Derek Chauvin’s conviction was obtained.

Despite a record‐breaking backlog of cases waiting to be heard, this man was arrested, brought before the court and convicted less than a year after the offence was committed. The jury was out for only nine hours before reaching their verdict ‐ guilty on all three counts.

In a case as complex and controversial as this, having it all conveniently wrapped up so quickly, absolutely reeks of political interference and mob appeasement.

Almost before the ink was dry, a noticeably relieved Biden appeared before the public pontificating about ‘stamping out racism’, ‘new beginnings’ and almost unbelievably proclaiming he had ‘prayed for the right result’ ‐ which actually was a bit rich coming from someone who once attended the memorial of a leading member of the Klu Klux Klan!

No, this was a trial by media and left wing manipulation who have now blatantly martyred a vicious criminal thug for their own political gain.

Chauvin’s appeal could be very interesting indeed.

About a year ago I wrote a piece decrying Nicola Sturgeon’s plans to hold another Scottish independence referendum. One observation of mine was that should it be successful she would need to erect a border akin to Hadrian’s Wall. This week I read that a ‘think tank’ committee had recently formed the same conclusion.

Presumably these people had been engaged and no doubt paid handsomely for their efforts. Strange to think that if they were readers of this publication they could have been informed of this conclusion months ago ‐ and a great deal cheaper! For the sake of sanity and good sense let us hope our friends north of the border see through Ms Sturgeon’s biased and mealy mouthed tirades and send her and her SNP party back into their Jurassic bolt holes where they belong, leaving us all to enjoy and prosper from the magnificent and exciting future that awaits our precious and wholly unique UNITED Kingdom.

Let real entertainment return MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I WATCHED the funeral of Prince Philip, not all of it, but I really don’t understand why on earth they let the Queen sit on her own? Forget she’s the Queen; all I saw was an old Granny burying her husband of 70 odd years. It could have been anyone’s granny and it’s wrong.

Masked up, all vaccinated, it’s just a total nonsense. They should have moved it from Windsor to the nearest Ikea or Primark because the UK’s stupid rules allow you to walk round stores with very little space between you. You can sit outside and have a drink but not inside. WHY? Funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people. But I’ve seen on the news punters going into Ikea, Primark etc and it’s mobbed. No-one is paying much attention to ‘social distancing’; they’re just going about their business like normal people do. So why make an old lady not have her kids sitting next her? It’s crazy and it’s wicked.

I love movies and the odd awards ceremonies that go with them. But this year’s

Oscar nominations have got some seriously depressing stuff as subjects with films like Nomadland, The Father and Pieces of a Woman, to name three. I’ve watched them all and a few others including Sound of Metal which is about a drummer in a band that goes deaf and that’s the most cheerful one!

Along with all the woke rubbish that’s included with the awards is everyone treading on eggshells. Maybe it’s time to knock them on the head or, and I really mean this, go back to the old style of real entertaining, non thought provoking films that make you laugh. Or Rocky types that make you feel good or Godfathers that make you feel like you’ve sat through a proper film.

Not the depressing stuff being churned out now and the awards ceremony where the host can take the piss out of everyone and say he or she and not worry about them getting outraged. Let actors act and give the awards to the best of the bunch regardless of race, religion or sexual persuasion because, as I see it now, they have completely lost the plot.

Let the best man win or woman or any of the other 20 or 30 genders I’ve missed.

Individuals have had their Instagram ac‐ counts hacked or Spotify memberships stolen as a result of this password repetition compla‐ cency.

On the other hand, having multiple pass‐ words has its own problems. I mean, remem‐ bering which password goes with which on‐ line account / email address / secure website etc. And being locked out of various online ac‐ counts / email addresses / secure websites etc just because when you try to login to one of them, you punch in the wrong password.

All because you think, of course, you re‐ member which password you need to use so you don’t need to hit that infamous ‘Can’t re‐ member your password?’ button. And almost every single time, you don’t remember...

LAST time I wrote about the problem of ‘phishing’. Well, the online passwords you use could put you at an even greater risk. Ac‐ cording to a recent survey, millions of Brits are using their pet’s name as their online password, despite it being an easy target for hackers.

The National Cyber Security Centre said 15 per cent of the population used pets’ names like Maggie, Molly, Max or Milo or other very common names. (Oops! Is that one of your passwords?) Moreover, 14 per cent use a family member’s name, and 13 per cent pick a notable date (like birthdays) which can also often be gleaned from social media. And 6 per cent of people are still using ‘password’ as all ‐ or a part ‐ of their password. (Oops! That you again?)

Other problematic passwords included a sports team the user supported (6 per cent), a string of numbers such as ‘123456’ (6 per

In theory, this should see the end of the curfew and restrictions on the opening times or bars, restaurants and shops as well as remove perimeter restrictions, but many Regional Governments think that this is far too early and have asked Prime Minister Sánchez to introduce a new State of Alarm.

Hi Leapy On a damp overcast day on the Costa I thought to myself - what better time to put finger to keyboard and send an email to someone who speaks more sense than most of the journalists out there put together!

I should start by saying that I am unashamedly a true blue, Tory boy through and through, and, no, I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, I slogged for everything that I achieved and ‘sponged’ from no one. The point that I am heading to is, having just listened to the UK news, isn’t it about time that the voting public woke up to the inadequacies of the Labour Party, led by Sir Kier ‘oil slick’ Starmer.

At a time of unprecedented pressure dealing with the dreaded Covid and its economic fall out, the best political strategy that they can come up with is to make an issue out of the funding for decorating the flat at No10. All this stemming from the pungent, lying, little turd Dominic Cummings. I was in business all of my working life and by concentrating on priorities was able to successfully employ 100s of people and pay my taxes for the better good of all. Surely it would be better if the government were allowed to concentrate on the priorities in hand rather than be burdened with insignificant, political mud slinging from a non fit for purpose opposition?

On a different note, it is heartening to see the Spanish vaccination programme gain momentum and also to know that we live in an area of low incidence (Valencia region). What I do find worrying is, after a long period of rigidly enforced restrictions, that there appears to be little or no control over the influx of visitors from France, Belgium or Germany that, by all accounts, are not so fortunate with their rates of infection. We have neighbours from all of these countries who have confirmed that we’re not checked at any stage of their road journeys.

Surely this is a recipe for Covid resurgence? On a similar subject, can anyone explain why Covid testing (necessary for safe travel and the consequent kick starting of the economy) is so expensive? Perhaps the misguided politicians’ time would be better spent sorting that out!

Lawyers will possibly be rubbing their hands as although the curfew can’t be re-instated individually, past experience has shown that when the Basque Government tried to impose a restriction on opening times and the number of people who could meet, the local High Court overturned their decision.

Currently perimeter restrictions are still in place and again in theory, these restrictions could be rescinded to allow

freedom of movement which would be welcomed by many, but also objected to by a number of people.

Using Andalucia as an example, Huelva, Malaga Province and Cadiz are mainly in Level 2, whilst much of Cordoba and Sevilla is in Level 3 and Almeria, Granada and much of Jaen are in Level 4 which indicates a huge disparity in the rate and number of infections.

One possible compromise, rather than restricting movement between provinces, could be to only allow movement between provinces that have the same infection level.

MARBELLA MOMENTS

BY NICOLE KING A FRIEND of mine is very fond of the saying “every adversity pro‐ duces a new opportunity.” In fact I’ve heard it so many times over the years that not only do I find myself saying it, but thoroughly believing it too.

Such was the case when my little girl Ashley broke her collarbone when she was 12. She was mostly housebound but decided she want‐ ed a hedgehog. Off she and I went to the garden centre with the best of intentions. When she saw that thick gloves were required to re‐ move the creature from its tank, she quickly changed her mind.

It was at that exact moment that I looked away and I saw her, my Darling. She looked back at me with an intensity unbefitting an an‐ imal so tiny that she could lie down comfortably in the palm of my small hands.

We already had nine dogs and I knew it was insanity to bring this miniscule being into our home, but it had to be and so it was.

Such was our bond I knew she’d survive, although she did give us a couple of scares in the beginning.

We all marvelled at how she quick‐ ly learnt to dodge the 36 other legs that would race to the gate when the doorbell rang; how she waltzed in and out of our horse’s stable without a worry in the world and how even our macaw knew that she was in charge.

her to an emergency vet and we managed to save her. It wasn’t un‐ til then that I even thought of her age.

That was two years ago. Per‐ haps she was no longer able to traipse around Marbella or be bustled about during recordings, but she was still always there to welcome me home enthusiasti‐ cally and ever ready to warm my lap and pillow.

From day one Darling was my rock, my confident, my companion, a soul mate; all of which I could have missed if it weren’t from a broken bone and a hedgehog.

Darling turned 16 in January and our little girl Ashley turns 28 next month, but this year Darling won’t be with us to celebrate.

Darling wasn’t a planned mem‐ ber of the family but she became an intrinsic part of our clan, as have all our animals.

With their invaluable insight and example they have helped us raise our children to be as good‐natured and warm hearted as any human animal could possibly aspire to be, always with time, patience and love for us all; and for that I’m also truly grateful my Darling; my dar‐ lings.

You may see me in my glory, in my happiness and in my joy, but I will always refrain from committing fully to being happy.

N o, it’s not fair that at times I doubt myself, and, at times, I start to think, “ I s this really me? Is this really me?”

Built on a foundation of pills, held on by a balance not quite my own.

O ne giant hope this identity of mine really belongs to me. Is this really me?

I crumble when your words twist into 10,000 meanings at once. My brain overloads, and I wonder which meaning you wished for me

to understand. The air in the space around my head caves in, and I lose sensibility.

Please know if I end up not the person I say I am, I am the person I mean to be. I t’s a constant struggle between reality and sanity. One I do not wish to fight, but neither silence nor giving up is an option.

U K government figures show that men in the UK are officially the fattest men in western Europe.

Some 27 per cent of the British population is now obese, putting the UK as the sixth highest in a league table of the 34 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations.

The average male Brit now tips the scales at 84kg. Only Americans and - perhaps surprisingly - Australians are heavier.

In fact, obesity rates in the UK are up 92 per cent since the early 1990’s, according to the OECD, who also predict that 40 per cent of people in Britain will be obese by 2030.

The figures also confirm that men in the U K are heavier than their Spanish counterparts, who actually weigh the DIET DAMAGE: least in western Europe at 74.8kg. Sprains, strains and muscle tears in dogs DIRECT or indirect trauma can cause injury or strain of ligaments, tendons or muscles. The most common caus‐ es are severe activities such as running, jumping or slip‐ ping. The dog stretches too far, too much, or too often.

Sport dogs are more exposed to this type of injury.

Also direct causes such as laceration from a deep cut or damage from a bone fracture can cause it. The most noticeable sign that a dog has a sprain or strain is limp‐ ing. Sometimes if the tear is mild, the clinical signs may be difficult to detect.

The vet will check your dog’s muscles and joints. He will see his gait, how he sits, and lies down. Then he will touch and press on certain points to see if they’re sore, warm, swollen, or out of place. Next step is to make X‐ rays. Radiographs are of little value in the early phase.

The use of advanced imaging modalities to demon‐ strate lesions of the affected muscle and/or tendon can increase confidence in the diagnosis.

Ultrasonography is a relatively inexpensive non‐inva‐ sive imaging modality, but is particularly dependent on the expertise of the operator. The use of MRI has great‐ ly increased the ability to detect lesions that otherwise is not possible.

Treatment depends on the type and the severity of the injury. In very mild cases with rest and NSAIDs, but in many cases physical therapy techniques and other surgery are required.

Physiotherapy techniques similar to those used in hu‐ man medicine are currently used.

Beauty of a Bengal cat THE Bengal cat has an exotic look about them. They are smaller than wild cats and for‐ tunately, not as dangerous.

The Bengal cat came about through the crossing of Asian leopard cats with domestic cats. They have spotted and

marbled coats of many colours, large bones and short hair.

They are also very intelligent and require a great deal of at‐ tention, which may be due to their inquisitive nature and high energy. They are con‐ stantly on the move and love

to climb to the highest of places.

Bengal cats also love the great outdoors, where their ancestral genes kick in to ac‐ tion and then they become a predator, while enjoying other pursuits like a bit of bird watch‐ ing.

There is a sensitive and play‐ ful side to this cat and when they have gained trust in their owner, they can become the most affectionate of pets, nev‐ er leaving your side. If they are left alone for a period of time, when the owner goes on holi‐ day; there could be a few gifts dotted around the house, on returning. It’s their way of telling you they’re upset, but this applies to most cats.

Cats do understand much more than we imagine, so it’s worth explaining things for them, as the meaning trans‐ lates through your body lan‐ guage.

Once you’re home, the Ben‐ gal cat settles down very quick‐ ly and as they are not as vocal as other cats, it’s easy to get plenty of sleep.

by Mark Slack THE Fiesta has been a staple of Ford’s sales lists for decades not to mention the nation’s garages and drive‐ ways. As the decades and fashion has moved on so too has the Fiesta. The initial rather boxy design has mor‐ phed into a larger, sleeker model that’s laden with tech that wasn’t even thought of when the Fiesta was first launched.

Ford Fiesta ST-Line - a case where fun beats speed without the hardcore driving experience. The Fiesta range is priced from £16,385 (€18,925) and the ST‐Line sits roughly mid‐table in the line‐ up with the ST‐Line Edition (from £19,585 / €22,620) and the X Edition (from £21,830 /

€25,213). Standard fare on both models includes such things as rear parking sen‐ sors, powered, heated, fold‐ ing door mirrors, auto lights and wipers, auto dimming mirrors, privacy glass, heated windscreen, navigation,

cruise, air conditioning, key‐ less start, sports tuned sus‐ pension and ST‐Line body styling and grey alloys.

Fords have always handled well and the ST‐Line is no ex‐ ception, yet the three engine options, all 1.0‐litre EcoBoost units, which range from 95 to 155 PS, with two options of mild hybrid electric pow‐ er, certainly don’t pro‐ vide blistering perfor‐ mance.

In top power mode the

benchmark 62mph is reached in a whisker under nine sec‐ onds. However outright speed isn’t the point of the ST‐Line, it’s one of those cars that very ably demonstrates fun doesn’t have to equate to speed. My 125 PS mild hy‐ brid model proved great fun when on cross country routes with a few nice bends for good measure. The steering is sharp, the peppy perfor‐ mance and engine note add to the fun and the car is a joy to drive. If you want outright performance then go for the

ST and you’ll give much more premium sports models a fright. If you want a decent turn of speed matched to a sensible ride then the ST‐Line is hard to fault.

The Fiesta has a smart and sophisticated look but there are signs of where the pen‐ nies have been saved inside the car. The plastics look and feel a little too bargain base‐ ment in places, the front door panels have cloth in‐ serts, but the rear ones are all plastic, and the carpets are rather poor. However, it’s a relatively small price to pay for a car that provides a com‐ pelling blend of urban, long distance and fun all rolled in‐ to one rather neat automo‐ tive package.

RENAULT Plans To Make Spain A European Giant In Car Manufacturing over the next few years THE motor industry, like most in‐ dustries, has suffered terribly during the pandemic, but ac‐ cording to the latest online re‐ ports from various motoring or‐ ganisations and websites, sales seem to be starting to pick up again, which can only be good news for the sector.

Renault, for decades, has al‐ ways been a major player in the production of cars in Europe, and although the company has its home in France, there is great news that the company plans to make Spain the second‐largest car manufacturing country in Eu‐ rope, after Germany.

Renault currently manufac‐ tures vehicles at its Palencia and Valladolid plants in northwest‐ ern Spain, and its other plant in Sevilla, and has a good foothold in the Spanish car market, but with production costs reportedly lower in Spain than they are in France, Renault is planning on increasing its activity in Spain in the next few years, looking to cut costs and

improve profits, after posting losses of €8 billion in 2020.

At a recent event at the plant in Palencia, which was attended

by Spain’s King Felipe and Presi‐ dent Pedro Sanchez, Renault’s chief executive, Luca de Meo spoke of the company’s plans to produce three new models, stat‐

ing, “This plan reinforces Spain’s position as Renault’s second home.”

While not giving any exact de‐ tails of Renault’s investment plans in this new project, De Meo did say he estimated it would generate around €12 bil‐ lion over the next three or four years for the Spanish economy.

While this is fantastic news for Spain, in France, it has not been so well received by the French unions, who are already

having to face the backlash cre‐ ated among the workforce by Renault having sold one of its French plants, and apparently al‐ so being in the process of sub‐ contracting some work at anoth‐ er plant.

Mr De Meo explained that starting in 2024, the plant in Valladolid will be used to man‐ ufacture two new models of car, while the Sevilla factory in Andalucia will be producing two new types of gearboxes, in
