Case closed THE Prosecutor’s Office has called for the closure of a file relating to complaints over the discharge of untreated sewage into the sea in Nerja. The courts have deemed there is ‘no evidence of criminal responsibility’ by municipal managers investigated. The council said this is “good news which confirms local public officials are exempt from criminal reproach.”

Rescue plan VELEZ-MALAGA has put together a Safety and Rescue Plan for its coastline to ‘facilitate the prevention of risks to people, property and the environment in all activities, spaces and facilities in the area of the beaches on the coast of the municipality, which may be affected by situations of emergencies.’

Seabed waste

MORE than 250 kilos of harmful waste has been cleared from Almuñecar seabed.

Hundreds of kilos of seabed waste has been collected at the Punta de la Mona, mostly abandoned fishing gear and plastic which has “severely damaged coral in the area,” according to one of the leaders of SOS Coral project, Fernando Alarcón.

The Marine Balance Platform ‐ ‘lovers of the sea’ ‐ has teamed up with Almuñecar Council to promote marine conser‐ vation in areas protected due to the wealth of their species, thereby preserving the marine ecosystems. ′′We are very aware of this situation here at the town hall along with our cleaning company FCC, and our aim is to con‐ serve our seabed ‐ one of the great natural values of our coastal strip,” stressed Tourism and Beaches councillor Daniel Barbero.

“Conservation, education and environmental awareness is our goal, as well as the implementation and promotion of pro‐ jects that serve to save that special wildlife and our natural her‐ itage,” added Barbero.

At the centre of the SOS Coral project is saving the single population of corals in the Mediterranean, which is located in the Special Conservation Zone (ZEC) of Punta de la Mona, which has a population of “priceless value,” explained Alarcón.

“But unfortunately, (during conservation work) in addition to such a special marine wealth, we also found a large build up of waste, 98 per cent from fishing gear that damages an incred‐ ible coral garden we are trying to protect,” he added.

JUANMA MORENO: Andalucians free to move around.

THE Chairman of the Board has announced that mobility between the provinces in Andalucia will be allowed from today, Thursday, April 29. “All Andalucians are free to move within our autonomous community to go to the countryside or to the beach,” said Juanma Moreno.

After midnight on Wednesday, you will be able to move throughout Andalucia. Mobility between provinces is allowed, although the perimeter closure of the community, the regional borders, and the curfew remain at 11pm. The Chairman of the Board, Juanma Moreno, appeared live

on TV at 8.30pm in San Telmo after the meeting of the committee of experts.

Commercial, leisure, and hospitality activity is also allowed until 10.30pm, current capacity is maintained and municipalities with rates of 500 and 1,000 infections will maintain the current restrictions.

Prison for Insurance Fraud

MOTRIL: Victims were sold false policies.

THE Public Prosecutor is asking for four years in prison for two insurance agents accused of fraud in Motril.

The pair also face €3,240 in fines after they allegedly obtained insurance pay outs on policies.

Prosecutors say the two obtained payments from 46 clients for non-existent insurance policies after the victims were sold insurance policies which were

never processed.

The suspects allegedly pretended to set up car insurance policies and home insurance policies in Motril in 2013 and 2014 for new clients and ones who already had insurance policies in their office.

According to the Public Prosecutor the suspects charged their victims for insurance policies without taking them out in Motril.

Protest Against Golf Course PROTESTORS have come out to demonstrate against plans for a new golf course and 680 homes in Maro, Nerja.

According to Spanish press, the protestors are asking Nerja Council not to sign an agreement they plan to approve for the golf course.

Political Chief Resigns JOSE MIGUEL ORTUÑO, chief of the PSOE political party in Nerja, has resigned ‘for work reasons’ after becoming chief of Nerja’s PSOE party in 2019.

The president of the Las Protegidas residents’ association says he will continue to be a socialist supporter and work with the party “at a local, Andalucian and national level.”

Until six months ago, he was also the general secretary of the Socialist Youth of Nerja, a position he left, “having exceeded the maximum age allowed in the statutes, which is 31.”

Radio Show to Help Local Businesses ACCORDING to Rincon de la Victoria Council, the Department of Commerce, together with the Municipal Radio and business groups has begun a new show to help commerce in the area.

The council said: “The new ‘Let’s Trade’ pro‐ gramme aims to provide a space for traders, entrepreneurs and hoteliers to publicise their

activity and explain how they are doing in the pandemic.”

The Department of Commerce of the city of Rincon de la Victoria, working with the munici‐ pal radio station, the Associations of Mer‐ chants and Entrepreneurs (ACERV), Hostellers (AEHMRV) and the Group of Women En‐ trepreneurs have created the plan.

Half a million in aid NERJA Social Services Depart‐ ment has processed €533,275 in aid to families hardest hit by the Covid crisis.

During the first quarter of 2021, the town hall assisted 271 families who have re‐ ceived direct municipal aid totalling €161,631.

Nerja mayor, José Alberto Armijo, visited the Communi‐ ty Social Services Centre where he held a working meeting with the councillor Daniel Rivas, and centre coor‐ dinator, Alicia Cortés.

“As confirmed by social services data and the Munici‐ pal Treasury, aid for social and family emergencies since the beginning of the pan‐ demic now amounts to €533,275, which has served a total of 668 families in the town.”

He recalled that in 2020, di‐ rect economic aid was in‐ creased from €250,000 to €500,000 , and stressed: “The municipal budget of 2021 provides an amount of €600,000 in order to serve all families at risk of social exclu‐ sion.”

Staff at the centre has also been reinforced, and current‐ ly it has nine social workers, an administrative assistant, a social educator and a psy‐ chologist, “with the aim of continuing to serve users.”

Mum’s compo A NEW mum has received €91,773 compensation from Malaga Hospital after giving birth at the health centre and suffering complications, later being diagnosed with a rectovaginal fistula. She was prescribed antibiotics but the pain continued and she was later admitted to another hospital where it was discovered she had damage to the sphincter.

It includes free activities with ‘dynamic’ and participatory workshops ‘that will be adapted to the evolutionary and educational needs of the children.’

Armed Forces THE PP party in Velez-Malaga Council has presented an ‘urgent motion’ in which it proposes to pay tribute to the armed forces and ‘reinforce the remarkable link that this military body has with the municipality’ by naming a square in Avenida de la Naciones in recognition of the efforts of the army.

Sand storm damage BEACHES in Torre del Mar, Chilches, Valle-Niza and La Caleta de Vélez have taken the brunt of storms at the weekend forcing closures in some parts while sand is restored.

Deputy mayor of Torre del Mar and Beaches councillor, Jesús Pérez Atencia, has visited the beach of El Mortero in Torre del Mar, one of the most affected by the high waves.

The damage in “this area of Torre del Mar has been substantial, so the dog beach will be closed temporarily,” said Atencia.

Cultural tours announced ALMUÑECAR launched its ‘Know Your Her‐ itage’ initiative at the weekend, a series of cultural themed tours and visits aimed at promoting the town’s ‘monumental and archaeological wealth.’

“During more than 3,000 years of histo‐ ry, many civilizations passed through the municipality and left a rich legacy,” said the council’s Department of Culture.

The first visit at the weekend was to the Necropolis Puente de Noy and was fully booked as soon as it was announced, ac‐ cording to municipal archaeologist, Ivan Sanchez, who stressed that numbers are limited and all anti‐Covid measures must be respected.

The next tour, on May 29, will take in the Roman baths and aqueduct next to

the Plaza Mayor urbanisation, and there will be visits to the Cave of the Seven Palaces, the Cerro de San Miguel and the Factory of Salted Fish in Park El Majuelo.

Finally, on June 26, the remains of walls, towers of the citadel, battlements and Castillo de San Miguel will be explored.

€250,000 Project a Tribute to women aid agreed THE Local Government Board has approved €250,000 aid for Almuñecar’s trade and hospi‐ tality sectors aimed at busi‐ nesses that had to close tem‐ porarily during 2020 due to the pandemic and consequent re‐ strictions.

“This aid will serve to cush‐ ion the extra expenses caused by the Covid‐19 pandemic as well as other current expenses that many entrepreneurs in our municipality have had to bear despite having their es‐ tablishments closed,” said councillor for Finance, Rafael Caballero.

There are seven sections of eligible expenses which include the purchase of Covid protec‐ tion and payment of rents, with a maximum of €700 per applicant.

THE Azul Violeta Association (Blue Violet Association) togeth‐ er with the council’s social wel‐ fare department has developed a project ‘Voices from the Rin‐ con, a tribute to all the women of the world.’

Reviving economy RINCON DE LA VICTORIA has launched a plan to revive the local economy.

The town council has launched ‘Reactive Plan 2021’ which aims to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people, reactivate the economy with new investments, pro‐ vide aid to self‐employed and SMEs, and create direct and indirect employment in the municipality.

“This plan, which is the continuity of one that was launched in May last year moti‐ vated by the pandemic, will have €3.5 mil‐ lion of EDUSI funds that will go towards in‐ vestments,” sad the local authority.

There will be €1.8 million for invest‐ ments funded by the Provincial Council, and €750,000 from the Covid Contingency Fund.

“All of this is included in the 2021 munic‐ ipal budget of €45.8 million,” added the council.

Aid to Pensioners MALAGA has an‐ nounced plans to offer €200 a year in housing aid to pensioners and the unemployed.

According to Span‐ ish newspaper Sur, this subsidy replaces the one that until 2020 was granted to HOUSING AID: Available for pensioners. families with low in‐ comes, offering €200.

Malaga City Council will offer the grant to cover IBI (property tax) payments to those whose income is less than €960.33 a month af‐ ter the measure was approved by a council meeting.

According to the councillor for Economy, Carlos Conde, this new regulation will provide financial help to around 7,000 people, in‐ cluding pensioners and the unemployed.

The aid offered by Malaga Council has a budget of €1.4 million and can be increased depending on the number of people applying for it. The news comes after Andalucia approved a measure to grant up to € 200,000 in aid to hotels in a major boost for tourism ahead of the summer.

Broken Measures

A SPANISH consumer association survey that took place in the last week of March has revealed that there are some Covid measures that are complied with more than others. However, there are two in particular that people said they regularly don’t follow.

The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) found that half of those who took the survey never, or almost never, maintain a social distance of two metres during a meeting, and only a quarter always follow the rule.

Another Covid measure designed to prevent the spread of the virus that is most often ignored relates to meetings in private homes with people that you don’t live with. In most of the regions, a maximum number of six people are allowed to meet, but the OCU report re‐ veals that half of the respondents admitted to breaking the rule and 7 per cent said they did not respect it.

Soup kitchens

PERISHABLE GOODS: Were delivered to soup kitchens.

THE National Police has delivered a shipment of perishable food to charities in Axarquia after seizing 70 kilos of marihuana in a lorry carrying 10 pallets of potatoes and 12 pallets.

The lorry was stopped by Velez-Malaga officers in Algarrobo after it made a dangerous and ‘last minute’ manoeuvre at exit 277 of the A-7 towards Malaga, and on inspection found the marihuana already vacuum-packed.

The 37-year-old male Moroccan driver was arrested for his alleged involvement in a crime against public health on April 23.

The perishable goods the driver was transporting were delivered to soup kitchens and other charitable groups, with the authorisation of the judicial authority.

The matter is now in the hands of the Examining Magistrate’s Court of Torrox.

Staff Reduction FOLLOWING its merger with Bankia, Caixabank is planning to cut 8,291 jobs in the biggest ever staff reduction in Spanish banking, and the third-largest in Spain’s corporate history.

On Tuesday April 20, management informed union leaders about its plans to cut employee numbers by 18.7 per cent to 36,109, down from 44,000. Not only this, over 1,500 branches representing 27 per cent of the total will be closed.

The same day María Jesús Montero, Spain’s finance minister and government spokesperson said the number of job cuts would be higher. She also called the plans “bad news” at a time when the government is making “Herculean efforts” to preserve jobs through ERTE schemes and avoid the level of unemployment figures that were seen during the 2008 crisis.

CYBERATTACK THE Phone House chain of mobile telephone stores in Spain was hit by the ‘Babuk’ ransomware cyberattack on Sunday April 11, but did not become public until April 21, and now, reportedly, the instigators of the attack claim to have published data on the dark web of 13 million customers who were on the company’s database.

The company assured that no ransom was paid to the cybercriminals, on the advice of cybersecurity experts, Hispasec, who claim that giving in to such demands only leads to funding more similar attacks, and still does not guarantee that the criminals would not publish the stolen data anyway.

Around 13 million customers’ personal information was stored on the Phone House’s servers, including full names, addresses, date of birth, email address, telephone contact number, home address, nationality, as well as bank account details, passport or identity document information, and the IMEI codes of all the devices sold to those customers.

Numbers to get the Jab THE Junta de Andalucia’s Ministry of Health department has issued a list of telephone numbers for people in the 75 to 79 years of age group who have not yet received their first coronavirus vaccination dose, but would like to get it.

According to regional government figures, 85 per cent of the people in this age group have already been vaccinated with at least one dose of a vaccine, but now they are looking for the remaining 15 per cent, who might have missed their appointment for any reason if maybe their contact information is not up-to-date or they have missed their appointment call for any other reasons.

The majority of people in this age group have reportedly received the Pfizer vaccine first dose, although some have also received the Moderna vaccine, depending on availability at the time of the appointment.

Case now dropped THE Public Prosecutor’s Office has dropped the case against the mayor of Velez‐Malaga for not holding a council meeting.

According to Spanish newspaper Sur, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has withdrawn its accusation against Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer.

Public prosecutors said they had withdrawn their case after the result of a trial found there was not enough evidence.

A private prosecution still maintains its request for 15 years’ disqualification from office for the mayor.

Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer is facing disqual‐ ification from office after political opponents in Velez‐Malaga accused him of preventing one par‐ ty from attending a council meeting they had re‐ quested.

New Golf Course NERJA has taken a step forward in creating a new golf course and 680 homes in the Vega de Maro. According to Nerja Council, the two parties governing, the Partido Popular (PP) and Cuidadanos, are meeting to move the plans forward. The parties will reportedly approve an agreement with company Azucarera Larios to use the 250 hectares of land for creating the homes, hotels, shops and golf course.

After the initiative first proposed in April 2015 was stopped by the previous tripartite council team, Nerja Council has now carried out a study of concerns reported by political parties, environmental groups, and residents over the plans.

Mass Car SORN in Spain Plans for cheaper tests EWN previously reported on how millions of vehicle owners could face fines for not having insurance. It has now been announced that thousands of cars in Spain that have not been insured for over 10 years or have not passed their ITV, so-called zombie cars, will be suddenly cancelled by the DGT. The Official State Gazette (BOE) published last week a Royal Decree on end-of-life vehicles that includes, among other new features, the establishment of one year from the date of application for the temporary deregistration of a vehicle.

After this time period, if an extension hasn’t been requested, the car will be in active status again which will mean the corresponding administrative and fiscal obligations, such as the payment of the circulation tax, are to be addressed. The extension may be requested at the Traffic Headquarters and has to be requested no later than two months before the end date of the temporary

Spain providing vaccines to Latin America PEDRO SÁNCHEZ, the president of the government, has announced Spain will provide Covid‐19 vaccines to Latin America as soon as conditions of the health emergency make it possible.

Sánchez’s idea is that it will show the country’s “commitment” and “solidarity” to the Ibero‐American community and that it is necessary to share vaccinations with those coun‐ tries most in need.

The president plans to coordinate with the European Union to ensure vaccines arrive as soon as possible.

He added: “The Government recognises… that the cost of these tests can be high. “ W e will work with the travel industry and private testing providers ahead of international travel reopening to see how we can further reduce the cost of travel for the British public while ensuring travel is as safe as possible. “ T his could include cheaper tests when holidaymakers return home, as well as whether the government would be able to

provide pre-departure tests.”

Responding to Michel’s concerns that the price of P C R tests can reach £214 (€245), Mr Courts added information to help travellers find the cheapest tests.

He said: “Individuals are encouraged to conduct their own research about available providers, the tests they supply and their terms and conditions of sale. Confusion and contradiction

THE Internet and Facebook pages are awash with confusing and contradicting information for expats returning to Spain from the UK. Since January 1, 2021, when the UK officially left the European Union, expats have been faced with a string of hurdles when try‐ ing to return back to Spain.

It would appear, judging by what expats are saying on social media, that your chances of being allowed to return to Spain from

the UK rely a lot on which airline you fly with, and which airports you fly in and out of.

Jessica said: "I am stuck in the UK. I checked my residency appli‐ cation status this morning to find ‘Resuelto ‐ Favorable’. I am thrilled but would like to know if I can now get back to Spain with this. I had problems with easyJet in March from Gatwick to Ali‐ cante because they would only accept the TIE or residency docu‐ ment. It was a very stressful expe‐

rience and I would not want to go through that again, so am rather reluctant to risk it. I would really appreciate it if anyone has any ex‐ perience of travelling with their favourable decision email."

Jessica’s situation isn’t an isolat‐ ed one, EWN has previously cov‐ ered stories of confused expats trying to return to Spain believing that they have the correct docu‐ mentation only to be turned around at the airport and forced back to the UK.

Mass Events Unlimited SPAIN’S central government said it is NOT willing to enforce a limit on mass events when the State of Alarm ends on May 9.

Carolina Darias, the Minister of Health, guaran‐ tees that a draft Public Health Commission docu‐ ment on the banning of mass gatherings depend‐ ing on the incidence rate in the province will only be a guide for regional governments so that measures can be standardised throughout the country, but “in no case will we try to force the re‐ gions to follow these recommendations.”

“To recommend is not to prohibit. This type of event is the responsibility of the regions,” the min‐ ister said. The Public Health Commission proposal, which is still being debated, will establish four lev‐ els according to the cumulative incidence rate of the province.

EWN speaks exclusively to Motocross World Champion WHEN you are just 20 years old and already a three-time world champion in your sport, having to take a year off is a nightmare.

This is what has happened to Spanish motocross rider Jorge Prado who has been unable to compete in any races since the lockdown.

Considered by many as the motocross equivalent to Lewis Hamilton, having started riding at the age of three, Jorge was very modest when speaking exclusively to Euro Weekly News about the comparison, saying “I can see why people say that, but I only hope that I can be as successful as Lewis over a long period of time.”

Motocross is a form of offroad motorcycle racing held on enclosed off-road circuits. The sport evolved from motorcycle trials competitions held in the United Kingdom as early as 1909, but its competitive home is now Belgium.

Jorge was born in Galicia and was so impressed by his father’s love for motor cycles that he just wanted to learn to ride

himself and his wish was granted when he was presented with his own miniature bike at the age of three and since then he has found incredible success in his sport.

As he grew, so did his bikes and eventually the family moved to Belgium to be close to the main practice tracks and the top competitors and teams.

Since that time, Jorge has done pretty well with an incredible record of growth and success: European and World Champion at 65cc in 2011 at the age of 10 years and eight months.

European Champion at 125 cc, in 2015 at the age of 14, being the youngest champion ever in the category.

In 2018, he became MX2 motocross world champion at the age of 17 and repeated that achievement the following year aged 18.

found it a little difficult to adjust to living in a colder climate with a less relaxed style when com-

pared to Spain, but he was quickly signed up by the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team

with whom he is contracted until 2023, even though he was their youngest ever rider.

From Belgium, his family moved to Rome with its more Latin way of life, but when asked whether he drives in Italy’s busy city, he smiled and shook his head, explaining that was too ambitious even for him.

The last year has seen Jorge in training, getting fitter and mastering his riding techniques ready for the first race of 2021, which he hopes will be in June and which should then take him off around the world.

With regards to whether he enjoyed so much travel he said “It is very intense with no time to go sightseeing and with the pandemic, I know it’s going to be even tougher with the need to obey all of the rules of hygiene and distancing.”

When we spoke, he was enjoying a one week stay in Galicia at his grandparents’ house so that he could get to see them and other relatives as well as sponsors since motocross is so popular in the re-

gion that every race is broadcast live on regional TV. Many footballers have their favourite shirt number and Jorge is no different as at an early age he was given 61 in a race that he won and so from then on, he has kept what he considers to be his lucky number.

Summing up has life to date, the very humble young world champion said “Motocross is my life, it’s what I love, I’ve been doing this for many years and I couldn’t do any other sport.”

It’s a daring, high speed adventure and this young man who speaks Spanish, English and Dutch will be doing his best to stay at the top of this exciting sport for years to come.

Are you one of the vociferous minority insulted by the word expatriate?

THE world is full of armchair experts who delight in trying to correct others and the latest target for them is use of the word expatriate for someone who lives in another country.

Like many other words in English, it has Latin roots, uniting Ex (out of) and Patria (native country or fatherland).

There is little doubt that when one writes about a British expat or expatriate in Spain then the vast majority of English-speaking readers will immediately and correctly recognise who is being referred to and let’s face it, language is all about ease of understanding.

The naysayers, argue that the word is demeaning and racist because it was originally applied to white Europeans and their families who were often sent abroad to work in the Colonies for a defined length of time.

They go on to insist that those who are not white are disparagingly referred to as migrants or immi-

grants when they in fact have as much right to be called expats as anyone else living abroad.

It has to be admitted that there is certainly an element of truth in that

protestation if it is intentionally used to disparage or insult another person, but many people understand who is being referred to when such words are used.

There is no doubt that the use and meaning of words change over time and perfect examples are both ‘sick’ meaning good and ‘gay’ referring to a sexual preference and it is

now absolutely unacceptable to use the ‘N’ word in any circumstance.

When one refers to British expats, there is no way that it is race or gender specific as it purely refers to someone who was born in Britain and has moved to another country, in this case Spain, therefore to suggest that it is insulting is plainly nonsense, unless a specific person is identified.

All newspapers try to make any article as easily understandable as possible and therefore this writer for one will continue not to raid the dictionary for words that nobody understands and will use expatriate when it fits better than ‘UK passport holder now residing in Spain who may or may not eventually return to the fatherland.’

Naturally, if a reader is able to provide a word as an alternative which the majority of English speakers would immediately recognise as referring to British in Spain, then is something that the EWN writers would be happy to review seriously.

Many local stores support local charities, support and sponsor local sports teams and in many cases the small independent stores are actu‐ ally much more than just a small high street shop, they’re a family’s legacy, often passed down through numerous generations and sup‐ port not just the current owner but the generation before.

For those stores which are new, that extra couple of euros spent there are supporting someone’s dream and ambition, and also the

courage it took them to step out alone, which is no easy task. It takes quite a large chunk of money to set up an independent store and com‐ pete with the multinational and chains.

So be sure to pre‐order your meat from a local butcher and get your spuds from a local greengro‐ cer, let us revive that community

spirit and get to know our neigh‐ bours again.

You could also consider purchas‐ ing gift vouchers from local busi‐ nesses to help them over the com‐ ing weeks, thinking outside the box can often lead to some fantastic ideas. Why not buy a meal for two, an hour’s tattoo time at a local stu‐ dio, a hair cut at a local salon or an

online study course for someone looking to change their career path.

As people are struggling with fi‐ nances thinking about what friends and family may actually need is im‐ portant too. Whilst it’s nice to give a glamourous gift perhaps pre‐pay‐ ing a family member’s phone bill for the month would actually be a better gift. Helping people alleviate stress and worry , give the gift of peace of mind through these diffi‐ cult times. Choosing to spend your money locally will really make a dif‐ ference in the recovery of the local economy. When we buy local, our money stays local, and it strengthens the local economy in two ways. First, buying local keeps money circulating within the local economy. Studies have shown that local businesses recirculate a greater share of every euro as they create locally owned supply chains and invest in their employees.

Data shows that local retailers return 52 per cent of their revenue back into the local economy, com‐ pared to just 14 per cent for nation‐ al chain retailers.

Money circulating through the local economy benefits everyone who is a part of each transaction.

For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce. First, they sell to a local restaurant, which in turn prepares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its local employees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbourhood hardware store.

This example illustrates how the recirculation of money in the local economy leads to a stronger finan‐ cial foundation for our neighbours and communities. Buying local also fuels new employment and job op‐ portunities for people within our community.

Studies show, locally owned businesses employ more people per unit of sales and retain more employees over time. A fantastic example of how to support your lo‐ cal community is with a Charity Gift certificate, why not donate to your loved one’s favourite cause.

Just remember to follow the lat‐ est government advice and any guidance businesses have to keep everyone safe.

WORLDWIDE SHORTAGE: So much technology relies on microchips.

A COMBINATION of the pan‐ demic, Brexit (for the UK) and a major fire in Japan have led to a massive worldwide short‐ age of microchips.

It may get better in the long term, but in the short term the problem is getting worse which may result in the cost of computers and mobile phones shooting up.

This has been made worse by the increase in home work‐ ers, many of whom have up‐ graded their laptops and PCs so demand has risen faster than production.

5G needs fuel an increase in demand for new mobile phones and there has also been a steady increase in the sale of video games during lockdown What’s more with so many car manufacturers relying on microchips to control the ever more advanced brains of their vehicles, the problem is slow‐

ing down production consider‐ ably.

Indeed Tata, the Indian owners of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), now Britain’s largest car manufacturer have recently announced that because of the shortage of microchips that it will have to suspend produc‐ tion at two of its three UK fac‐ tories.

This slow down would not only affect the company’s rev‐ enue, but could see some form of financial loss for its nearly 6,000 workers if they are forced to work part time.

It’s not just the UK that is suffering as the majority of au‐ to manufacturers in Europe and the USA have reported similar problems especially as the demand for new vehicles is beginning to increase.

The defence was rubbish

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I WAS actually more than a little disturbed about the speed that police officer Derek Chauvin’s conviction was obtained.

Despite a record‐breaking backlog of cases waiting to be heard, this man was arrested, brought before the court and convicted less than a year after the offence was committed. The jury was out for only nine hours before reaching their verdict ‐ guilty on all three counts.

In a case as complex and controversial as this, having it all conveniently wrapped up so quickly, absolutely reeks of political interference and mob appeasement.

Almost before the ink was dry, a noticeably relieved Biden appeared before the public pontificating about ‘stamping out racism’, ‘new beginnings’ and almost unbelievably proclaiming he had ‘prayed for the right result’ ‐ which actually was a bit rich coming from someone who once attended the memorial of a leading member of the Klu Klux Klan!

No, this was a trial by media and left wing manipulation who have now blatantly martyred a vicious criminal thug for their own political gain.

Chauvin’s appeal could be very interesting indeed.

About a year ago I wrote a piece decrying Nicola Sturgeon’s plans to hold another Scottish independence referendum. One observation of mine was that should it be successful she would need to erect a border akin to Hadrian’s Wall. This week I read that a ‘think tank’ committee had recently formed the same conclusion.

Presumably these people had been engaged and no doubt paid handsomely for their efforts. Strange to think that if they were readers of this publication they could have been informed of this conclusion months ago ‐ and a great deal cheaper! For the sake of sanity and good sense let us hope our friends north of the border see through Ms Sturgeon’s biased and mealy mouthed tirades and send her and her SNP party back into their Jurassic bolt holes where they belong, leaving us all to enjoy and prosper from the magnificent and exciting future that awaits our precious and wholly unique UNITED Kingdom.

Let real entertainment return MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I WATCHED the funeral of Prince Philip, not all of it, but I really don’t understand why on earth they let the Queen sit on her own? Forget she’s the Queen; all I saw was an old Granny burying her husband of 70 odd years. It could have been anyone’s granny and it’s wrong.

Masked up, all vaccinated, it’s just a total nonsense. They should have moved it from Windsor to the nearest Ikea or Primark because the UK’s stupid rules allow you to walk round stores with very little space between you. You can sit outside and have a drink but not inside. WHY? Funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people. But I’ve seen on the news punters going into Ikea, Primark etc and it’s mobbed. No-one is paying much attention to ‘social distancing’; they’re just going about their business like normal people do. So why make an old lady not have her kids sitting next her? It’s crazy and it’s wicked.

I love movies and the odd awards ceremonies that go with them. But this year’s

Oscar nominations have got some seriously depressing stuff as subjects with films like Nomadland, The Father and Pieces of a Woman, to name three. I’ve watched them all and a few others including Sound of Metal which is about a drummer in a band that goes deaf and that’s the most cheerful one!

Along with all the woke rubbish that’s included with the awards is everyone treading on eggshells. Maybe it’s time to knock them on the head or, and I really mean this, go back to the old style of real entertaining, non thought provoking films that make you laugh. Or Rocky types that make you feel good or Godfathers that make you feel like you’ve sat through a proper film.

Not the depressing stuff being churned out now and the awards ceremony where the host can take the piss out of everyone and say he or she and not worry about them getting outraged. Let actors act and give the awards to the best of the bunch regardless of race, religion or sexual persuasion because, as I see it now, they have completely lost the plot.

Let the best man win or woman or any of the other 20 or 30 genders I’ve missed.

Why would an ambitious law firm call itself Spiegelhalter, Nackers and Kilfeather? We have to ask the fore‐ bearers of the founders. Booz Allen is a serious international consulting firm while Boosey & Hawkes are es‐ teemed classical music publishers.

Outside a Cambridgeshire pub called The China Shop is a sign proudly depicting a bull and Mao‐ Tse‐Tung. Quite clever, and so sim‐ ple!

In the 50s, buses began to trundle around Paris bearing an advertise‐ ment inviting us to drink more Ps‐ chitt (buvez Pschitt). This soda drink is alive and well today but mysteri‐ ously unsuccessful in the English‐ speaking world. In the 70s, Helena Rubinstein introduced a women’s perfume called Body Mist. I wonder why it did not sell too well in Ger‐ many and Austria!

HAVE you been targeted by one of those ‘phishing’ scams doing the rounds recent‐ ly? You know, those scam emails pretend‐ ing to offer customers a tax rebate? Or worse still, you missed the January 31 deadline for online UK tax returns? If so, you’d better come up with a better excuse than those given by HM Revenue and Cus‐ toms as the worst examples people have come up with for filing / paying their tax return late.

These range from the usual “my pet dog ate my tax return … AND all the reminders”; “I was up a mountain in Wales, and couldn’t find a post box or get an internet signal” and “I was in Australia” to the “poor me” variety (“I fell in with the wrong crowd”; “I live in a camper van in a supermarket car park”; “a work colleague borrowed my tax return, to photocopy it, and didn’t give it back”; “my girlfriend’s pregnant”) to the truly bizarre

WORST EXCUSES: “My pet dog ate my tax return... AND all the reminders.” (“I’ve been busy looking after a flock of es‐ caped parrots and some fox cubs”; “I’ve been travelling the world, trying to escape from a foreign intelligence agency”).

Unsurprisingly, none of these led to a successful appeal ‐ or worthy of an award at Monday’s Oscars. To return, briefly, to ‘phishing’, maybe the best advice nowadays

is, sadly: ‘Trust nobody’.

The world in which we now live. Fake tradesmen in hi‐vis jackets knocking at your door to check some phoney gas‐leak/pipe‐ work ‘problem’ and walking out with your wallet. The elderly being palmed off with third‐rate stuff at outrageous prices. Or a worthless plot of land as an ‘investment’.

This happens, we all know it happens.

The answer may partly lie with the media: more publicity given about the punishment dished out to offenders to scare off those hell‐bent on committing such crimes. And more, much more success in catching the offenders...

What’s really disturbing is that the police often know who the offenders are, but can’t get enough people to testify against them. Perhaps we’re all to blame here.

STATE OF ALARM ONCE again there is some disagreement between Regional Governments and the National Government over the removal of the State of Alarm on May 9.

In theory, this should see the end of the curfew and restrictions on the opening times or bars, restaurants and shops as well as remove perimeter restrictions, but many Regional Governments think that this is far too early and have asked Prime Minister Sánchez to introduce a new State of Alarm.

All indications are that this will not happen, although if there is a nationwide spike in infections this could change, but it is more likely that once

Hi Leapy On a damp overcast day on the Costa I thought to myself - what better time to put finger to keyboard and send an email to someone who speaks more sense than most of the journalists out there put together!

I should start by saying that I am unashamedly a true blue, Tory boy through and through, and, no, I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, I slogged for everything that I achieved and ‘sponged’ from no one. The point that I am heading to is, having just listened to the UK news, isn’t it about time that the voting public woke up to the inadequacies of the Labour Party, led by Sir Kier ‘oil slick’ Starmer.

At a time of unprecedented pressure dealing with the dreaded Covid and its economic fall out, the best political strategy that they can come up with is to make an issue out of the funding for decorating the flat at No10. All this stemming from the pungent, lying, little turd Dominic Cummings. I was in business all of my working life and by concentrating on priorities was able to successfully employ 100s of people and pay my taxes for the better good of all. Surely it would be better if the government were allowed to concentrate on the priorities in hand rather than be burdened with insignificant, political mud slinging from a non fit for purpose opposition?

On a different note, it is heartening to see the Spanish vaccination programme gain momentum and also to know that we live in an area of low incidence (Valencia region). What I do find worrying is, after a long period of rigidly enforced restrictions, that there appears to be little or no control over the influx of visitors from France, Belgium or Germany that, by all accounts, are not so fortunate with their rates of infection. We have neighbours from all of these countries who have confirmed that we’re not checked at any stage of their road journeys.

Surely this is a recipe for Covid resurgence? On a similar subject, can anyone explain why Covid testing (necessary for safe travel and the consequent kick starting of the economy) is so expensive? Perhaps the misguided politicians’ time would be better spent sorting that out!

Lawyers will possibly be rubbing their hands as although the curfew can’t be re-instated individually, past experience has shown that when the Basque Government tried to impose a restriction on opening times and the number of people who could meet, the local High Court overturned their decision.

Currently perimeter restrictions are still in place and again in theory, these restrictions could be rescinded to allow

freedom of movement which would be welcomed by many, but also objected to by a number of people.

Using Andalucia as an example, Huelva, Malaga Province and Cadiz are mainly in Level 2, whilst much of Cordoba and Sevilla is in Level 3 and Almeria, Granada and much of Jaen are in Level 4 which indicates a huge disparity in the rate and number of infections.

One possible compromise, rather than restricting movement between provinces, could be to only allow movement between provinces that have the same infection level.

Beauty of a Bengal cat THE Bengal cat has an exotic look about them. They are smaller than wild cats and for‐ tunately, not as dangerous.

The Bengal cat came about through the crossing of Asian leopard cats with domestic cats. They have spotted and marbled coats of many colours, large bones and short hair.

They are also very intelligent and require a great deal of at‐ tention, which may be due to their inquisitive nature and high energy. They are con‐ stantly on the move and love to climb to the highest of places.

Bengal cats also love the great outdoors, where their ancestral genes kick in to ac‐ tion and then they become a predator, while enjoying other pursuits like a bit of bird watch‐ ing.

There is a sensitive and play‐ ful side to this cat and when they have gained trust in their owner, they can become the most affectionate of pets, nev‐ er leaving your side. If they are left alone for a period of time, when the owner goes on holi‐

day; there could be a few gifts dotted around the house, on returning. It’s their way of telling you they’re upset, but this applies to most cats.

Sprains, strains and muscle tears in dogs DIRECT or indirect trauma can cause injury or strain of lig‐ aments, tendons or muscles. The most common causes are severe activities such as running, jumping or slipping.

The dog stretches too far, too much, or too often. Sport dogs are more exposed to this type of injury.

Also direct causes such as laceration from a deep cut or damage from a bone fracture can cause it. The most no‐ ticeable sign that a dog has a sprain or strain is limping.

Sometimes if the tear is mild, the clinical signs may be dif‐ ficult to detect.

The vet will check your dog’s muscles and joints. He will see his gait, how he sits, and lies down. Then he will touch and press on certain points to see if they’re sore, warm, swollen, or out of place. Next step is to make X‐rays. Ra‐ diographs are of little value in the early phase.

The use of advanced imaging modalities to demonstrate lesions of the affected muscle and/or tendon can increase confidence in the diagnosis. Ultrasonography is a relative‐ ly inexpensive non‐invasive imaging modality, but is par‐ ticularly dependent on the expertise of the operator. The use of MRI has greatly increased the ability to detect le‐ sions that otherwise is not possible.

Treatment depends on the type and the severity of the injury. In very mild cases with rest and NSAIDs, but in many cases physical therapy techniques and other surgery are required. Physiotherapy techniques similar to those used in human medicine are currently used.

by Mark Slack THE Fiesta has been a staple of Ford’s sales lists for decades not to mention the nation’s garages and drive‐ ways. As the decades and fashion has moved on so too has the Fiesta. The initial rather boxy design has mor‐ phed into a larger, sleeker model that’s laden with tech that wasn’t even thought of when the Fiesta was first launched.

Ford Fiesta ST-Line - a case where fun beats speed without the hardcore driving experience. The Fiesta range is priced from £16,385 (€18,925) and the ST‐Line sits roughly mid‐table in the line‐ up with the ST‐Line Edition (from £19,585 / €22,620) and the X Edition (from £21,830 /

€25,213). Standard fare on both models includes such things as rear parking sen‐ sors, powered, heated, fold‐ ing door mirrors, auto lights and wipers, auto dimming mirrors, privacy glass, heated windscreen, navigation,

cruise, air conditioning, key‐ less start, sports tuned sus‐ pension and ST‐Line body styling and grey alloys.

Fords have always handled well and the ST‐Line is no ex‐ ception, yet the three engine options, all 1.0‐litre EcoBoost units, which range from 95 to 155 PS, with two options of mild hybrid electric pow‐ er, certainly don’t pro‐ vide blistering perfor‐ mance.

In top power mode the

benchmark 62mph is reached in a whisker under nine sec‐ onds. However outright speed isn’t the point of the ST‐Line, it’s one of those cars that very ably demonstrates fun doesn’t have to equate to speed. My 125 PS mild hy‐ brid model proved great fun when on cross country routes with a few nice bends for good measure. The steering is sharp, the peppy perfor‐ mance and engine note add to the fun and the car is a joy to drive. If you want outright performance then go for the

ST and you’ll give much more premium sports models a fright. If you want a decent turn of speed matched to a sensible ride then the ST‐Line is hard to fault.

The Fiesta has a smart and sophisticated look but there are signs of where the pen‐ nies have been saved inside the car. The plastics look and feel a little too bargain base‐ ment in places, the front door panels have cloth in‐ serts, but the rear ones are all plastic, and the carpets are rather poor. However, it’s a relatively small price to pay for a car that provides a com‐ pelling blend of urban, long distance and fun all rolled in‐ to one rather neat automo‐ tive package.

RENAULT Plans To Make Spain A European Giant In Car Manufacturing over the next few years THE motor industry, like most industries, has suf‐ fered terribly during the pandemic, but according to the latest online re‐ ports from various mo‐ toring organisations and websites, sales seem to be starting to pick up again, which can only be good news for the sector.

Renault, for decades, has always been a major player in the production of cars in Europe, and al‐ though the company has its home in France, there is great news that the company plans to make Spain the second‐largest car manufacturing coun‐ try in Europe, after Ger‐ many.

Renault currently man‐ ufactures vehicles at its Palencia and Valladolid plants in northwestern Spain, and its other plant in Sevilla, and has a good foothold in the Spanish

car market, but with pro‐ duction costs reportedly lower in Spain than they are in France, Renault is planning on increasing its activity in Spain in the next few years, looking to cut costs and improve profits, after posting losses of €8 billion in 2020.

At a recent event at the plant in Palencia, which was attended by Spain’s King Felipe and President Pedro Sanchez, Renault’s chief executive, Luca de Meo spoke of the company’s plans to produce t h r e e n e w models, stating, “ T h i s plan re‐ i n ‐

forces Spain’s position as Renault’s second home.”

While not giving any exact details of Renault’s investment plans in this new project, De Meo did say he estimated it would generate around €12 bil‐ lion over the next three or four years for the Spanish economy.

While this is fantastic news for Spain, in France, it has

not been so well re‐ ceived by the French unions, who are already having to face the back‐ lash created among the workforce by Renault having sold one of its French plants, and ap‐ parently also being in the process of subcon‐ tracting some

work at another plant.

Mr De Meo explained that starting in 2024, the plant in Valladolid will be used to manufacture two new models of car, while the Sevilla factory in An‐ dalucia will be producing two new types of gear‐ boxes, in 2022 and 2024.

In a statement, a s p o k e s m a n f o r t h e C F DT union, Franck Daout, said, “This announcement also coincides with the arrival of the Re‐ nault group’s Da‐ cia Spring, which will be made in China, and the ramp‐up of the electric Twingo, made in Slove‐ nia.”

CALAHONDA DO THE DOUBLE THE Greens started and played the first 10 minutes with a team all aged over 70 against Benalmadena Se‐ niors to win this second leg of the James King Seniors Trophy by four goals to two.

The game was played in the true spirit with experi‐ ence being the difference between the teams. Added to their 3‐0 win two weeks ago the 7‐2 aggregate saw the Greens lift the trophy last Thursday at the Finca Naundrup.
