Public pee patrol FOLLOWING many other municipalities, the Torremoli‐ nos Council has announced that it requires all dog owners to carry a spray to wash away urine from pave‐ ments and public places.

The Local Police have been instructed to take action against any person not doing this and to consider the issue of fines of between €75 and €500 depending up‐ on the severity of the offence.

The Council recommends that one way of diluting the urine is a soapy solution with vinegar made with a mixture of water (750ml), vinegar (240ml) and liquid soap (10 ml) or three quarters water, one quarter vine‐ gar and a tablespoon of liquid soap.

Affordable accommodation Mediamarkt

THE former headquarters of the School of Languages in Marbella is to be reformed in order to create affordable accommodation for young people.

This news was announced by mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, and the General Secretary for Housing of the Junta de Andalucia, Alicia Martínez when they visited the building on Thursday April 15.

modation being offered to those on the housing register who are eligible.

Housing accommodation for

young people in the south of Spain is difficult to find which is why so many remain living with their parents for many years and with the lack of work caused by the pandemic, many simply can’t afford to move out. Muñoz explained that the building which is owned by the city was too small to accommodate the large number of potential students so the council has found a new, larger space in the Fair building, thus freeing up this building.

POLITICAL party Opción Sampedreña (OSP) which holds two seats in the Marbella Council has proposed that in the same way that Lewis Carroll invented the Unbirthday, San Pedro should hold an ‘Un Fair’.

Traditionally, the San Pedro Fair which is held in October is the last of the large fairs of the year on the Costa del Sol, attracting tens of thousands of people and is a great money spinner for local com‐ merce.

Apart from the financial option, they also argue that it is about time that people had a chance to let their hair down, dress up and have fun for a change especially as by October the 70 per vaccina‐ tion target should have been exceeded.

They are proposing a scaled down version with a few subsidised stalls and some music and children’s entertainment with the event taking place as usual not just at the fairground, but in the streets around the town.

FOUR people were rescued in an overnight operation after getting lost in the mountain area of Marbella’s La Concha in Istan.

According to the Andalucian Emergencies 112, all four hikers are now ‘safe and well’ and no injuries were reported.

Just before 7pm on Sunday, April 18, 112 received reports of a group of walkers lost in the mountainous area. Marbella Firefighters, the Guardia Civil, the Istan Local Police and the Association of Civil Protection Volunteers were alerted and a search operation was organised with the teams split up into two groups.

Marbella Firefighters located two of the lost hikers at around 9pm and they were evacuated. Rescuing the rest of the group proved trickier due to difficulties getting access and finally ropes were lowered to pull the two to safety and get them back to the rescue base camp at dawn.

Fortunately, nobody was injured.

Solar for local marinas THE Marinas del Mediterráneo Group which manages the marinas of Estepona and La Duquesa is to install solar energy to heat water for the ports’ toilets and showers.

This is part of its long‐term commitment to improve the environmental quality of its nautical facilities which has seen it continuing to collaborate with Environmental and Consumer Education Association (ADEAC), the organisation responsible for the Blue Flag Programme in Spain.

As environmental demands change so does the management and op‐ eration of the facilities and both marinas have earned blue flags for 23 consecutive years achieving passes in information and environmental ed‐ ucation, safety and service and environmental management.

NEW STORE: Has now opened in Miramar.

RETAILER Mediamarkt has opened its new store in Mijas’s Miramar shopping park.

According to Spanish newspaper Sur, the leading interna‐ tional chain has inaugurated its new establishment in Mira‐ mar on the Costa del Sol, in Mijas.

The company has reportedly introduced measures for the pandemic in the new premises, including collection lockers for online orders.

The new store offers nearly 1,600 square metres and its spaces and services have been adapted, in line with the com‐ pany’s business model, to preserve the safety of customers and employees.

It also offers individual lockers for the collection of orders that are made online and also allows the sending of products that customers order from the website of the store.

The news comes after it emerged that Andalucia’s reached €2,534 million last February, yielding a positive trade surplus of €481 million.

The Andalucian foreign exports sector in February showed clear signs of reactivation in international mar‐ kets and produced better performance than the national average, which registered a fall of 1.9 per cent to € 23,542 million.

The Junta de Andalucia is also promoting ‘TRADE’, which is a new strategy aimed at attracting investment into the re‐ gion.

Minister of Economic Transformation, Rogelio Velasco, An‐ dalucia wanted to attract foreign investment and that they would be working out how to distribute the European Funds for economic recovery.

NIBS EXTRA Lost hikers MARBELLA Firefighters assisted by the Civil Protection rescued five foreign hikers on Sunday, April 18 when they were split up and became lost in the Arroyo de Monchalbán area. One party of four was split in two, whilst the fifth hiker got lost in Los Monjes.

Surfing adventure UNDER this title, the Mijas Council is organising a fun event on May 9 which will involve 50 young people aged over 13 receiving training in kayaks and paddle boards whilst at the same time collecting rubbish from the sea.

Extra space AT a cost of €59,626 pedestrians on the La Cala bridge in Estepona will benefit from a new project which will see the pavement widened by 1.2 metres along the 24 metres of the bridge in order to make it safer from traffic.

Lifeguard course USING European Union funds, the Torremolinos Red Cross is offering those aged between 18 and 60 years of age who are currently unemployed and are resident in the municipality an opportunity to undertake a free beach lifeguard course that lasts one month.

Talent show PLANS are now underway for Manilva to have its own competitive talent show with classes up to 16 and 16 and over, the final of which will take place on September 18 at the Manilva Pavilion. Participants are invited to send videos of their performance for consideration.

Water Park WITH a budget of €148,746, the Casares Council has gone to tender to find a company to build a fun water park in the Huertezuela area, alongside the skateboarding track which will offer a dozen water diversions including cannons and jets.

Super, smashing, great LA CALA DE MIJAS Lions took flight or rather their darts did as President Graham Rutland organised a great afternoon of darts for 50 unsuspecting supporters on April 18.

Held at Miraflores Club - recently opened and a really lovely setting for all events, those taking part said that the venue, menu and service was perfect, not to mention the sunshine.

75-year lease for ADANA THE Association for the Rights of Aban‐ doned Animals (ADANA) has been given a 75‐year lease, free of charge to municipal land owned by Estepona Council.

A formal agreement was signed by Es‐ tepona mayor José María García Urbano on Friday April 16 which will allow ADANA to undertake improvements on the 11,000 square metre plot, known as Las Cabrerizas.

A MAD exhibition THE Museum of Art of the Provin‐ cial Council, better known as MAD Antequera is inviting visitors to view a collection of 50 pho‐ tographs recalling provincial events since 2000.

The exhibition brings together high‐quality photos taken by 18 professionals involved with the Malagueña Association of Graph‐ ic Press Informers (AMIGP).

It includes images of natural disasters, political events as well as a number of simple captures of the great beauty seen across the province as well as the impact of the arrival of immigrants seeking a new life having risked all to cross continents. Perhaps the three most poignant images hark back to 2020, with a picture of a man wearing a mask, applause for health workers by people under lockdown and professionals working to help those who were suffering.

Benalmadena Local Police IN response to a request from taxi associations, Benalmadena Council has arranged training sessions for Local Police with regards to private hire drivers (VTC).

Councillor for Security and Mobility, Javier Marín said “over three days training talks will be given on the control of VTCs, focusing on aspects such

as the type of documentation that the drivers of these vehi‐ cles have to carry, the badges that the vehicles must carry or the obligation to always have a roadmap together with the contract.”

Fast charging Estepona THE first ultra‐fast charging station for fully sus‐ tainable electric vehicles in Spain has been in‐ stalled at the GALP Service Station in Estepona, just off the AP7.

It is a joint venture between Nissan and Easy‐ charger with the support of the Andalucian Ener‐ gy Agency and GALP. The station which was inaugurated on April 15 is not just any station, it is an ultra‐fast charging station that has two fast chargers that currently offer power of 90kW and, in a few months, they will be ready to provide a recharge to 180kW. This latter installation will incorporate 20kW of renewable power, via a photovoltaic pergola that places it as the first 100 per cent Sustain‐ able Ultra‐fast Charging Station in Spain.

Its next beach and sea bed clean will take place at Piedra Paloma on the Casares Costa from 4pm on Monday April 26.

There will be three teams, consisting of divers, paddle board riders and pedestrians on the shore and they expect to at least match their March clearance when they col‐ lected more than 53 kilos of rubbish.

With the slogan ‘This spring in Fuen‐ girola your purchases could win a prize,’ Councillor Javier Gar‐ cía Lara explained that “the idea arises after the good result of the campaign to p r o m o t e l o c a l c o m‐ merce that the coun‐ cil organised during Christmas, when more than 9,400 cus‐ tomers were given tickets to win a cruise by shopping locally at one of almost 400 es‐ tablishments that took part.”

SIMPLY SURVIVING GROUP IS GROWING THEIR Facebook page now has over 550 members, a growth of 250 in the last month alone.

This charitable group was formed during lockdown to support businesses, mainly in the entertainment and hospitality sectors here on the Costa del Sol, whilst raising money for registered charities. In March €1,000 was raised for Donkey Dreamland sanctuary in Mijas. This month they hope to raise a similar amount for The Food Fairies who distribute food parcels to local needy families. In May their chosen charity is Last Chance Animal Rescue, which rescues and if necessary treats and homes abandoned animals.

Local businesses of any kind can advertise for free on the Facebook page and the feedback from both advertisers and customers alike has been very positive. People also are appreciating the positivity generated on and by the Group.

Urchins returned to sea IN collaboration with Mijas Local Police, of‐ ficers from the Se‐ prona nature protec‐ tion branch of Guardia Civil in Marbella have reported two people for illegally catching 105 kilos of urchins.

The police also re‐ covered breathing ap‐ The sea urchin is a delicacy. paratus and fishing gear when the two people were seen on Sheriff beach in Mijas.

One of the two people was discovered to be a repeat of‐ fender of carrying out the activity without any permits and not respecting the limit of the amount caught per day.

The majority of the illegally caught sea urchins that were seized in Mijas were still alive and returned to the sea.

The sea urchin is a delicacy that is appreciated in the provinces of Sevilla and Cadiz, where they are commonly consumed in restaurants and bars and in high demand in the hospitality industry.

Tivoli World VÍCTOR NAVAS, the mayor of Benalmá‐ dena, accompanied by María Isabel Ruiz, his Town Planning Councillor, held a press conference at the gates of the Tivoli amusement park ‐ which is cur‐ rently in bankruptcy ‐ where he an‐ nounced that the town hall has not ruled out the possibility of resorting to the compulsory purchase of the park, as a measure to guarantee its continuity.

The town hall had commissioned Diego Vera, the professor of Administra‐ tive Law at the University of Malaga to prepare a legal report, to include new formulas for the urban protection for the Tívoli land, which has since been pre‐ sented to the town hall, with Mr Navas saying, “Although some legal recourse is pending, we have full confidence that Tivoli will open this summer.”

He continued, “We want to reaffirm our absolute commitment to the conti‐ nuity of the Tivoli amusement park, with the maintenance of its jobs and with the need for a large investment to guarantee one of the pioneering and most impor‐ tant leisure parks in the country, in addi‐ tion to being a great asset and an em‐ blem for the city of Benalmádena.”

Adding, “Tivoli is viable, and this has been demonstrated once again by the bankruptcy administrator’s report, and

Navas explained that the amusement park is already protected at a subregion‐ al level within the Plan for the Manage‐ ment of the Territory of the Urban Ag‐ glomeration of Malaga (POTAUM), with María Isabel Ruiz explaining, “In the coming months we are going to adapt our PGOU to the criteria already includ‐ ed in the POTAUM to further protect the lands, qualifying them as metropolitan facilities of a cultural and leisure nature, thus transcending municipal regulation to integrate into regional planning.”

With the mayor concluding, “It is a unique facility on the Costa del Sol, there is no other amusement park on the en‐ tire Costa del Sol, which reinforces our obligation as a government team to pro‐ tect it.”

Dog Rescue Spring Fayre THE Dog Rescue Helpers Spring Fayre held on Thursday April 15 was a resounding success!

The whole community came together that day in aid of several Animal Rescues.

Local Councillor Bill Anderson opened the event to loud applause and over 250 people enjoyed the day with live music from varying genres playing from 12 until 7pm! There was plenty of space for peo‐ ple to dance with social distancing, and many were up strutting their stuff!

The food was amazing, home‐made and plenty of it. The drinks flowed and the laughter was just so good to hear.

The charity raised €2,100 ‐ just a breathtaking amount and has been split with €700 going to Pat Waterhouses res‐ cue, Pats Rescue Retreat, €700 to Almas de los 4 Patas and €100 each to Domino Dogs of Malaga in need Organisation, Po‐ dencos y Mas, Kay Millington of Rescued Paws Spain, Pawsawhile Dog Rescue, ARCH, Operation Great Escape and Todos Caballos del Mundo ‐ you can find all of these rescues on Facebook or on the In‐ ternet if you would like to offer them sup‐ port.

Free pet adoption FUENGIROLA Council is offering free pet adoption to all residents.

Mayor of Health, Javier Garcia Lara, said that the council would pay all the fees necessary for adoption, including vaccination, for placement of a microchip and for a health record.

He said: “The Zoosanitary Park is the place where those animals are sent that are collected abandoned on the public road for safekeeping.

“We work hard so that these pets can have a home to give and receive care, so we have a permanent campaign to facilitate adoption.

“There are times, like the current one, in which the number of abandoned animals multiplies due to various circumstances.”

The politician added: “All the animals that arrive at the facilities of the Zoosanitary Park are treated to improve their health.”

He said: “In the last two years, in Fuengirola we have reached the goal of putting down no animals in the city, which means that all the abandoned animals that arrived at the facilities of the Zoosanitary Park found a new home.”

Mayor Lara said he was calling people who live in Fuengirola not to abandon their pets, and “that all those people or families interested in having a new member visit the facilities of Parque Zoosanitario so that they know the pets that we keep there.”

The news came after Malaga also announced it had reached its goal of putting down no abandoned animals brought in.

ARCH TO THE RESCUE THE Andalucian Rescue Centre for Horses and Donkeys was recently involved in a high-profile rescue case, which has been highlighted in newspapers and on local television. Members of the charity were alerted to the case of an apparently severely neglected pony in Arenas by Óscar del Bosque, president of the local dog rescue charity Apisman, and were sent photographs and videos of his condition.

Having checked the facts, they got in touch with their dedicated animal rights lawyer, who contacted SEPRONA (the animal welfare arm of the Guardia Civil) in Velez-Malaga. Concerned that the owner might hide the pony, ARCH went up to Arenas with a trailer and SEPRONA confiscated him immediately.

The little black stallion had hooves that were grossly deformed, curling up like ram’s horns. His coat was matted and filthy and there was no sign of food or water in his tiny enclosure. He had no name, and his owner had no licence to keep equines.

Back at the rescue centre in Alhaurin el Grande, he was assessed by the ARCH vet, who then arranged for a specialist vet from the equine hospital in Cordoba to come and X-ray the hooves prior to cutting them back to a more normal shape.

It was a long and painstaking morning’s work for the vets and for the ARCH farrier, but the little chap was sedated and showed no signs of distress.Afterwards the pony’s feet looked more normal although the prolonged neglect has damaged his tendons and it is doubtful that he will ever be 100

DUKE: His name suits him perfectly. per cent sound, though with regular trimming he may rebalance himself. He is pottering around very happily, still very interested in the ladies, and ARCH are hoping to find him a suitable loving home in the future.

And his name? Well, ARCH ran a Facebook post asking for suggestions which attracted a great deal of interest and many and various names. In the end the winner was ‘Duke’ (or Duque in Spanish) which suits him perfectly.

If readers are interested in meeting Duke, the ARCH Rescue Centre is open to the public every Sunday morning from 9am until 2pm. Covid restrictions are in place and groups are limited to five people. Volunteers are on hand to show visitors around, introduce them to the horses and donkeys and, if they wish, help them groom the quieter animals. Celebrating Earth Day with Mi Moana ENVIRONMENTAL association Mi Moana is committed to protecting the ocean and the environment by organising regular beach clean-ups and educating the next generation to help them to reduce their impact on the environment. For Earth Day on Thursday April 22, Founders Natasha and Nikky Wegloop are asking people to grab a bag, put on some gloves and do a street or beach clean-up with their family, friends, neighbours and colleagues.

“Earth Day is a great opportunity to act and start to make longer term changes to help the planet,” explains Natasha Wegloop. “If hundreds of people on the Costa del Sol pick up just a few pieces of litter each this Earth Day, together they will make a big difference and we will be able to see the benefit to our local area and environment. We also recommend thinking about your plastic footprint on Earth Day, educating yourself about the alternatives and taking steps to reduce the plastics you use on a day-to-day basis. Every little really does help!”

Mi Moana has been working hard this year to improve the health of the seas and the condition of the beaches along the Costa del Sol. They are continuing with their beach and underwater clean-ups and welcome volunteers to get involved. Mobile Screenings THE Ministry of Health and Families of the Junta de Andalucia have announced that they carried out mass screenings this week, in the towns of Benalmadena, Alozaina, and Alameda, after the General Directorate of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Management had reported detecting a possible rise in coronavirus infections in those areas.

Testing began in Benalmadena, on Monday April 19 at the La Paloma fairground in Arroyo de la Miel, where 1,000 residents were summoned from 10.30am to 2.30pm, and then again from 4pm to 6pm.

Then on Tuesday April 20, the mobile unit was scheduled to travel to Alozaina, where it parked up on Calle Calvario, in front of the pharmacy, to perform antigen tests from 4pm to 6.30pm, and then on Wednesday April 21, 1, 380 people were given appointments in the Municipal Pavilion in Alameda.

Mobile units with SAS carried out the tests, with all the participants, who were selected at random, having already been notified by text message of the location and time to attend their voluntary antigen testing.

Authorities stressed that it was important for only the selected people to attend for the testing, and only to the specified location given in the text they received to take antigen tests, which are equal in diagnostic capacity to a PCR test and allows you to know the result in around15 minutes.

Mass screenings were carried out.

Rights Campaign WHO’s stance FOLLOWING an outpouring of concern from expats that the high prices being charged in the UK for PCR tests to travel could prevent loved ones seeing each other again, the EWN has begun a campaign to help make a difference.

According to reports, the price of PCR tests for travel can range from £60 (€69) to £214 (€246).

And while the UK requires tests on both entering and leaving, this could add hundreds to the price of travel for many hoping to see their friends and family again this summer.

After the Euro Weekly News ran a poll asking readers whether they believed the UK government should introduce a price limit on the cost of tests, a whopping 85.2 per cent agreed prices should be capped.

In her letter, Michel wrote: “With around 360,000 Britons in Spain, many of whom still have family, homes and businesses in the UK, readers have been getting in touch concerned about the price of UK PCR tests for international travel.

“After such a long separation from loved ones during the pandemic it is a priority for Britons here for tests to be affordable enough to see their families again.

“The many Britons here with tourism-related businesses are also eager to ensure that UK travellers are not deterred from visiting Spain this summer due to the high price of tests.

“I would be very grateful, therefore, if you could please tell

me if the government has any plans to introduce a cap on the price companies can charge UK travellers? Or whether it plans to introduce a standard test price to help UK nationals reunite with their loved ones?”

THE World Health Organization’s Emergency Committee announced on Monday, April 19 maintaining its stance on an issue that is under growing debate among governments and the travel sector experts worldwide - that the outcome of their meeting on Thursday April 15 was a recommendation that proof of vaccination should not be required by the government of any country as a condition of international travel.

The independent experts, said in a statement, that the facts and data discussed in their meeting last week cited limited evidence on whether vaccination against Covid-19 reduces people’s ability to transmit the virus and ‘the persistent inequity in global vaccine distribution.’

Andalucia Artists THE Junta de Andalucia has invested €100,000 in budding artists.

The Junta de Andalucia has reaffirmed its support of local culture by contributing to a new edition of the Iniciarte programme, an initiate launched by the Ministry of Culture back in 2016 aimed at the promotion and projection of emerging Andalucian art.

Earlier this week, Patricia del Pozo, the minister of culture, announced that €100,000 would be allocated to the programme for 2021.

Tesla Closer TESLA, Elon Musk’s revolutionary top-of-the-range electric car company, is gearing up to open

a dealership on the Costa del Sol, according to reports in the Sur, with a showroom to be located in an eye-catching building in Calle Horacio Quiroga, on the Valdició industrial estate in Malaga, which will also include a service workshop.

This is scheduled to happen in a few months’ time apparently, and will become Tesla’s first dealership in Andalucia, which shows the growing interest and economic importance being generated in the southern Spain region by international companies of late.

The Malaga Motoring Association (AMA) reports that 2019 was the best year for Tesla in Andalucia, when a total of 62 cars were sold in Malaga alone, and the region already has a wide network of recharging points, which provide energy at a rapid rate, including ‘super chargers’ in El Higuerón, Fuengirola.

UK Covid Checkpoints EXPATS face ‘up to six hour’ waits at UK Covid checkpoints due to people not having the correct documentation to return home.

Footage that has emerged showing a woman collapsed at Heathrow after reportedly waiting seven hours in a queue for a Covid test has led to widespread concern in the expat community wanting to return to the UK. After Heathrow chief solutions officer Chris Garton confirmed that the Home Office has not increased the number of border control staff, excessive waiting times in crowded airports are now added to concerns of pricy coronavirus test kits and complicated paperwork.

One worried Facebook user posted on a local information site on behalf on an elderly friend soon to travel back to the UK who is concerned about ‘scare stories’ she has heard about waiting times. Many helpful expats replied to confirm that while leaving Spain had been a breeze in most cases, it was a different story once they landed in the UK. One Euro Weekly News reader told the paper that he was not allowed to board a flight at Alicante airport at the end of March as he had neglected to complete the traveller locater form, and had to book another flight a few days later. Yet another traveller posted in a popular Facebook group for expats and explained that, while her experience was positive, she witnessed people being refused entry at the UK border for not having a reference number for their booked Covid tests on their forms.

Missing person appeal THERE is a new appeal for help to find a Costa del Sol pub owner who has been missing since 1993.

Bernadette Cooper ran an Irish pub called Molly Malone’s in Benalmadena in the 90s, the pub was very popular with the British population in the area.

In 1993, Bernadette closed the pub and had planned to get a flight to London from Malaga, where she was planning to raise money to pay off her debts, however, she never showed up. She came to the Costa del Sol in the 80s hoping for a new life in the sun, according to family members.

Leon Moore, Bernadette’s nephew, has now contacted the Missing People charity and experts at Locate International in the hopes of finding her. Missing People charity and Locate International have been leading the revival of the search for Bernadette and ask any Costa del Sol residents for information that may help locate her. This can be people who have a relation to the premises she ran, had a relationship with Bernadette or any other information they may know.

claims she had some sort of link with a criminal organisation in the Costa del Sol, the Surrey Constabulary police opened a new investigation in the hopes of finally finding out what happened to Bernadette.

Pet vaccine THE Veterinary Collegiate Organisation (OCV) in Spain has recommended that as soon as vaccines are available for animals then owners of pet cats and dogs should vaccinate them against Covid‐19.

According to the OCV, tests are already under‐ way in several centres linked to the Complutense University of Madrid aimed at the production of a vaccine for animals, and more especially for cats they said, since, “despite the scarcity of manifested symptoms, some post‐mortems detected serious lung damage.”

But recently, Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo hinted that they could take place as early as October this year, with members of the PSOE suggesting they will definitely happen “before the spring of 2022.”

One of the main concerns of all political parties in Spain at the moment is the economic and tax future of the country, which cur‐ rently faces a deficit of €80 billion in 2021 alone. The socialist ranks in particular are nervous that no matter how much of a positive spin the government puts on economic recovery, the EU may step in if they detect further financial difficulties.

Virtual Dog Walk to raise money for guide dogs DOG lovers on the Costa del Sol are being encouraged to grab their leads and put on their walking boots to join hundreds of other people in a virtual walk for charity.

To celebrate International Guide Dog Day (April 28) and raise funds for the O N C E Foundation for Guide Dogs (FOPG), Specsavers Ópticas is launching its Virtual Dog Walk 2021 initiative.

Taking place between April 26 and May 2, this will be a chance to fund the vital work that this guide dog association does and allow dog owners to get involved with the campaign without concerns about social distancing and Covid-19 restrictions.

Nerea Galdos-Little from Specsavers Ópticas in Marbella explains, “Due to the pandemic, we have sadly been unable to plan any big public events this past year to support our national chosen charity, the ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs (F O P G). However, we are not going to be defeated by

Pregnant women THE Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immu‐ nisation (JCVI) in the UK has now advised that pregnant women can be offered the Covid‐19 vaccine.

This change to the guidance comes after data from the United States shows that 90,000 preg‐ nant women have been vaccinated with mRNA vaccines (such as the Pfizer vaccine being used in Gibraltar) without any specific safety con‐ cerns being raised.

Dr Krishna Rawal, Medical Director of the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA), said: “The Covid‐19 vaccine we are using in Gibraltar has undergone extensive clinical trials and has been approved as safe for use by the UK’s Medical

and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), as well as European Healthcare Regu‐ lators.

“Recent data shows that although uncom‐ mon, severe illness due to Covid‐19 is more like‐ ly in later pregnancy and that pregnant women who do get symptomatic Covid‐19 infection are two to three times more likely to give birth to their baby prematurely.”

Whilst this information was released and tar‐ geted at pregnant women in Gibraltar, the opin‐ ion coming via the UK Health Authority follow‐ ing trials in the USA appears to be appropriate for all, although local advice should also be sought.

22 - 28 April 2021 SPAIN’S lower house of parliament took another step forward on Thursday, April 17 in approving the pioneering new legislation which aims to better protect children and adolescents in Spain, with 268 votes in favour, 57 against and 16 abstentions.

The Social Rights Commission of the Congress of Deputies approved a draft bill of the groundbreaking Rhodes Law on Wednesday, April 7, and it will next pass to the Senate for final approval. It is hoped that the new legislation will be published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) by June.

Lucai Munoz of the Unidas Podemos party said on Thursday that the approval of the law puts Spain at the forefront of the protection and promotion of the rights of children.

Social Rights, the new legislature will extend the statute of limitations on serious crimes against minors until they are 30 years of age, whereas it currently runs out when they turn 18.

Additionally, the law will prohibit the hiring of anyone who

has been previously convicted of abusing a minor to jobs dealing with children, such as schools and leisure centres.

A specific article is included to prevent parents gaining joint custody of a child in a family environment where gender violence

has been observed, and a comprehensive care package will be provided for children who have been subject to violent crimes of a sexual or gender-based nature.

Specialist units within the authorities will be developed to deal with victims of abuse and dedicated training will be provided to judges and prosecutors.

One of the major changes will be the removal of the use of the socalled Parental Alienation Syndrome (SAP), which has long been accused of allowing undue parental influence over abuse cases.

Guarantees will also be strengthened so that minors can participate in legal proceedings; a judge will therefore be prevented from rejecting the testimony of a minor ‘due to lack of maturity.’

Tolls for future income IN its latest bid to appease the European Union and assure Brussels that Spain is on top of its financial plan to cover the bailout, the government of Pedro Sanchez has amended its recovery plan to include the introduction of tolls on so-called ‘high-capacity’ roads in order to contribute toward the €140 billion expected from the EU. The plan, due to be submitted on April 30, has committed to generating an income that will guarantee the funds necessary to preserve the road network.

“The financing of high-capacity roads will be reviewed and an income system will be

established that guarantees the necessary funds for the conservation of the state road network,” the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan states.

Spain currently has one of the lowest investment rates in its roads in all of Europe, only spending around €22,489 per kilometre, according to the latest available data from the Association of Infrastructure Conservation and Exploitation Companies (Acex).

In fact, this country spends around half the amount on infrastructure as other European giants such as France, Italy and Germany.

Gap Between Vaccines

ON Wednesday April 14, the Professional Union of the Ertzaintza (SiPE) has requested the imme‐ diate withdrawal of the FFP2 masks because of the pulmonary risks due to graphene being found present.

An investigation has begun by the AEMPS into the risk present when inhaling these nanoparti‐ cles because of pulmonary toxicity and has found that the type IIR surgical masks with graphene are being marketed in Spain.

After Canada raised the alarm over the masks, autonomous communities of the Basque Country and Castilla y Leon ordered the precautionary re‐ moval of masks made with this material. Follow‐ ing this, Madrid City Council then requested the withdrawal of the masks after they had been ad‐ ministered to municipal staff.

The specific mask models are the FFP2 Heal‐ fiber mask manufactured by Shandong Shengquan and distributed by Iturri SA. Also the IIR surgical mask from the same manufacturer and distributed by Amevisa SAU.

IN a huge about‐turn, the Ministry of Health in Spain has suggested delaying the period between the first Covid vacci‐ nation and second from 21 days to 42, af‐ ter previously insisting they would follow the guidelines of the jab manufacturers to the letter.

Now, ministers have backtracked and feel that expanding the time between doses would allow for more people to re‐ ceive the first vaccine in a shorter period of time.

According to the press, the proposal was to be put to the appropriate repre‐ sentatives of the autonomous communi‐ ties on Tuesday, April 20. The Ministry of Health has denied that the decision is al‐ ready a done‐deal, but the Ministry of Health is recommending that the space between inoculations with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines be doubled, from three weeks to a month and a half.

Smoking Ban Divide Wine price influences IN what many are considering yet another blow to Spain’s hospitality industry and future tourism prospects, in a surprise move on Thursday April 15, the Ministry of Health confirmed that they had drafted a proposal prohibiting smoking on all outdoor terraces, regardless of whether or not a two-metre safety distance can be maintained.

The proposal has divided opinion, which is hardly sur-

prising since the regional governments of the autonomous communities can’t seem to agree on whether it’s a good idea either.

There are currently six communities in Spain which have imposed a total ban on smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes on outdoor terraces of bars, restaurants and cafes: Valencia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Asturias and Aragon.

As soon as the proposed measure was announced, the Gremi de Restauracio union in Barcelona completely rejected the ban, insisting that it “is not endorsed by any type of scientific support.”

Ministry of Health sources confirmed that while a draft study has been compiled, it has not yet been submitted and wasn’t on the table for discussion at the meeting of the Public Health Commission on Thursday, April 15.

Spain To Relaunch Cruise Industry AFTER months of uncertainty, the Spanish Government has announced that a pilot project will be conducted at the port of Barcelona, in conjunction with Costa Cruises and MSC to eval‐ uate the reintroduction of cruises in the country this sum‐ mer.

The president of the port confirmed that the first cruise passengers will arrive in Barcelona in June, although

they will not be permitted to visit restaurants, bars or shops.

The first liners will disem‐ bark at only 10 per cent capaci‐ ty ‐ that’s a maximum of 600 people per cruise on ships that can carry 5,500 passengers, and Costa will carry out Covid tests on all travellers; they’ll al‐ so be offered a PCR test before returning home after the trip.

“We will organise shows with small groups, we will elim‐

inate the free buffet and we will reduce capacity. We have also equipped the ventilation systems with new filters,” Cos‐ ta Cruises told Spanish outlet Nius Diario.

In addition, the MSC group will require its passengers to wear an electronic bracelet that allows them to open doors without touching them, and can also track any possible infections.

Many people cannot start the day without a cup of coffee, but what makes a perfect coffee for you and where do you find it? Coffee is only normally grown in countries which have a subtropical or tropi‐ cal climate and the beverage is one of the most consumed in the world.

The Canary Islands have been home to coffee plantations since the 18th century, but this is not a very well‐known fact. The area not only produces coffee but also grows avocados, mangoes and oranges in the volcanic soil.

New legal status

ON Tuesday April 20, the plenary of the Congress of Deputies were to consider a proposal of the law of the PSOE to modify the Civil Code, the Mortgage Law and the Civil Procedure Law to provide animals with a legal status to be considered as ‘living beings endowed with sensitivity’ and not goods or things.

The initiative was approved unanimously in 2017 by the Plenary of Congress, however, it was declined due to it not completing its full parliamentary process when the Cortes Generales was dissolved in March 2019.

Currently, the Civil Code endows animals with the legal status of things, specifically under the condition of ‘moveable property.’

The new proposed law introduces an article in the Civil Code that will consider animals ‘are living beings with endowed sensitivity’ and that owners must have a duty of care over them, as well as ‘ensuring their wellbeing, according to the characteristics of each species.’

Vaccination Passports IN an enormous boost to sum‐ mer tourism in Spain, the gener‐ al secretary of Digital Health, In‐ formation and Innovation Alfredo González, confirmed on Thursday, April 15 that travellers from Europe to Spain that hold valid vaccination cards ‐ or Digi‐ tal Green Certificates as they are to be officially known in the EU ‐ will not have to go the expense of getting a Covid test done or enter into a period of quarantine on arrival. Speaking at a Nation‐ al Health System meeting, the secretary said that the certifi‐ cate, which will take the form of a QR code, will be rolled out in Spain in June and will open up the country to “more people in a safer manner.”

“This certificate is not a pass‐ port, it’s not a travel document, and it’s not a requirement for travel,” the general secretary clarified. “It’s a mechanism that will facilitate mobility in the Euro‐ pean Union. It will respect data protection, safety and privacy. It is planned so that it will not be discriminatory, and that is one of the major advantages,” he added.

New Speed Limits IN a bid to cut down on the number of road traffic acci‐ dents in Spain, new laws will come into force throughout the country on May 11, dras‐ tically reducing the speed limit on city streets.

On November 10, 2020, the Council of Ministers ap‐ proved a package of legal re‐ forms with the aim of reduc‐ ing the number of road deaths and serious injuries by 50 per cent.

The modification of the Traffic Regulations means that from May 11, the speed limit on one‐way streets in urban areas will be reduced to 30km/hour, while larger vehicles carry‐ ing dangerous goods will circulate at a maximum of 40 km/hour on city roads of two or more lanes.

On all other crossings, the maximum speed limit will be 50km/hour, while munic‐ ipal councils may be able to increase the speed on one‐ way streets in exceptional circumstances.

ITV car sticker colours ON Saturday April 17, the N332 posted information on ITV car stickers and colours, saying on their Facebook page: “Remember that once you get the new ITV sticker, you must re‐ move the old one before placing the new one in its place.

“The ITV sticker is classi‐ fied as sign ‘V‐19’ in the Spanish Traffic Law. It is compulsory to show it on the right‐hand side of your windscreen. Please, display only the last one.”

The website goes on to explain the stickers are colour coded “on a three‐ colour cycle of green, yel‐ low and red.”

As long as you are dis‐ playing only one sticker on your vehicle in the required place, which is in the upper right corner of your wind‐ screen as you are looking out, it is then clear to traffic and police officers who are carrying out roadside checks that you have the correct sticker displayed.

THE Minister of Equality in Spain, Nadia Calvino has ruled out any fur‐ ther tax increases in the near future, despite claims from the govern‐ ment that they intended to raise wealth and corporate taxes as a means of stimulating national income without negatively affecting those who had been hardest hit by the pandemic.

Instead, the Minister said on Thursday, April 15, her main focus is to boost economic growth and create jobs, insisting “it is not the time to raise taxes.” Ms Calvino added that taxes have not been raised this year as the government is looking at ways to improve the current sys‐ tem.

Masks after the vaccine THE vaccination campaign is progressing around Europe and the UK, but when will we really be able to return to ‘reality’?

It is a complex question and it seems there is no short‐term answer, however, we do know that we will not be able to re‐ turn to normal without continuing some of the protective measures we have adopted over the past year ‐ such as the use of masks, washing hands regularly and safe social distanc‐ ing.

According to health authorities, it is important that we con‐ tinue these protective measures since most people who have been vaccinated will be protected from the virus but can still transmit it, even without presenting any symptoms.

It is important to note that until we have reached group im‐ munity, we will need to continue these safety measures.

It appears we could all be wearing the mask for some time to come.

A Lack of Accountability CRITICISM is being levelled at Spain’s President Pedro Sanchez over a lack of accountability over the State of Alarm after he last year extended the State of Alarm to six months from the

normal 15 days set out.

The politician is also being slammed for only giving three hours of speeches over the State of Alarm in six months.

Pedro Sanchez has now said that the State of Alarm in Spain will end on May 9.

The decree establishes restric‐ tions for the movement of peo‐ ple that the autonomous com‐ munities have been applying.

Among these limitations have been the curfew to limit mobility at night and the perimeter clo‐ sures of autonomous communi‐ ties, provinces or municipalities, as well as confinements of cer‐ tain areas.

Researchers now believe they have discovered a potential indicator of why these symptoms vary so dramatically between people.

The researchers carried out a study on around 400 people who were not considered to be in any of the normal “at risk groups” for the virus, and who had tested positive.

The expert explained that, “We found that there were epigenetic variations, in the chemical switches that regulate D N A activity, in those positive for the virus who developed severe Covid-19.”

Lower Fares SPANISH Rail Operator Renfe has announced it will lower the rates for the AVE and long‐distance trains throughout the summer. Renfe is to scrap its previous 148 rates and come down to just three, the new simpler rates and discounts ap‐ ply for seniors, families and young people.

The president of Renfe, Isaís Táboas, explained that this new system ‐ matching that of aviation ‐ will also solve the problem that many people now face who cannot apply the discounts to which they are entitled to in the lowest rates.

The new system establishes three ticket options: Basic (the cheapest), Choose (the most flexible) and Premium, (all‐inclu‐ sive), which can be customised with additional services.

Renfe already offers the possibility of buying one‐year tickets, which will be added to the new system ‐ managers hope to encourage advance purchases of these lucrative tickets as much as possible.

Explaining the situation to the committee of MPs, Mr Gar‐ ton told how the shortage of staff for processing passengers at the border had always been a problem, but that now, the pandemic “has just made that so much worse than it was be‐ fore.”

He continued, “We want to see that bottleneck removed as quickly as possible. It’s a prob‐ lem today, it will become a much bigger problem after May 17, when foreign leisure travel from England could resume,” saying that he believes the solu‐ tion could be that every passen‐ ger’s entry to the UK is “as‐ sured” before they begin their journey.

Compulsory Sterilisation Of Pets IN a highly controversial move, the Junta de Andalucía has drawn up a preliminary draft of its new animal welfare law which would require pet owners to sterilise all companion animals. The legislation has been welcomed by animal welfare societies and shelters,

who want to see the “establishment of guarantees for the sterilisation of animals and their purchase, breeding and responsible sale to avoid overpopulation, abandonment and, ultimately, their sacrifice.”

This same animal protec-

tion law actually came into force in La Rioja in 2018. In 2020, the Constitutional Court made some amendments but left in the section covering the mandatory sterilisation of private pets, something which the government maintains is still “constitutionally legitimate,” and therefore will mostly be adopted by other autonomous communities before too long.

The new draft proposal states that “companion animals that are the object of sale, transfer or donation must be previously sterilised before reaching one year of age and, preferably, before their first heat.”

The legislation proposes stricter registering methods for breeders and explicitly prohibits the “reproduction, breeding and sale of companion animals by private persons outside the breeding and sale centres that meet the legal requirements, as well as their transfer or donation without being previously identified and registered in the name of the transmitting person.”

Within six days of development, each of the monkey embryos in the blastocyst phase was injected with 25 human cells, specifically, reprogrammed pluripotent stem cells - capable of copying all types of cells in the body with a fluorescent protein.

Línea Directa goes public THE National Securities Market Commission (CN‐ MV) has approved the list‐ ing of shares in Línea Direc‐ ta Aseguradora on the Spanish Stock Markets on April 29.

Currently owned by Bankinter, which will retain a minority shareholding in the company, Línea Directa is the fifth largest insurer in Spain and currently has more than 3.2 million clients and an annual

turnover of close to €900 million in premiums.

Originally set up as a mo‐ tor insurer, it now has the largest market share in the country, but after adding home and health insurance to its offerings, it also en‐ joys a growing share of those markets.

I pay Community fees for two plots in my Community.

Both have the same square metres but one has my house on it. The other is vacant. I pay €204.75 each plot for the first semester plus €204.75 for the second semester each year. Total is €409.50.

MARKS & SPENCER has launched an intellectual property claim in the UK against supermarket giant Aldi, citing alleged similari‐ ties between its Colin the Caterpillar cake with Aldi’s Cuthbert the Caterpillar.

Ibercaja Bank reveals future plans

GOING ALONE: José Luis Aguirre and Víctor Iglesias announced the plans.

WITH the merging of Spanish banks being recommended by the Bank of Spain, Zaragoza based Ibercaja Banco has just confirmed that it intends to continue alone.

It started as a savings bank 145 years ago and expanded in 2011 by taking over other savings banks which allowed it to grow significantly.

The President José Luis Aguirre and CEO Víctor Igle‐ sias have now revealed their strategy to take the bank for‐ ward by publishing their 2021‐2023 ‘Challenge Plan’.

In this, they are looking to continue to offer a wide range of customer services which includes, banking, mortgages, insurance, pen‐ sions and much more with the aim of adding an addition‐ al 50 per cent of customers in personal, business and pri‐ vate banking.

Another target sees a de‐ termination to exceed a 7 per cent return on investment with a new focus on the de‐ velopment of technological knowledge to help increase customer satisfaction and to reduce costs.

There is also a plan to strengthen the bank’s finan‐ cial position to ensure that it is able to cope with any new and unexpected problems which may arise as Spain emerges from the pandemic and it has over the past three years reduced the burden of non‐performing assets by al‐ most €5 billion.

A statement from the Presi‐ dent makes it clear that he and his board have every con‐ fidence in the future of the Spanish economy for the fu‐ ture.

True problem lies in the home

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I’M utterly sick and fed up with the media and woke brigade endeavouring to make us feel sorry for thugs and criminals. George Floyd was a habitual criminal, out and about breaking the law. Had he been a law abiding citizen, legally going about his business, the police would have had no reason to arrest him and he would be alive today.

The case of a 13‐year‐old, shot dead by police at the weekend was undoubtedly a tragic event, but he was out at night, with his friend, both carrying loaded guns! What do you think they were up to, charity work?

In that particular circumstance I actually feel sorry for the police officer, who I understand was in tears after the event. Apparently a second before he was shot, the police video showed the boy was actually holding a gun. He then raised his arm to discard it. The officer had a split second to decide whether or not the boy was about to shoot him, what was he supposed to do, let the boy take the first shot!?

He was simply protecting himself.

NO CONTROL: Why are they carrying guns to begin with?

Naturally the popular media are not showing the young man actually with the gun in his hand, merely the split second after he had discarded it. After all, the more hatred and trouble they can whip up the more newsworthy content they can glean for their sensationalist hungry viewers.

And why is there always such a

kerfuffle when many black drivers are ordered to put their hands on the wheel or the dash where they can be seen?

The majority of these drivers’ immediate reaction seems to be frantic jerking around, shouting protests, waving their arms and generally escalating the whole event

which then often culminates in screaming police dragging them from the car. If they would simply comply immediately there would be no need for all the violence and possible tragedy that often ensues.

I know if I was shouted at by an armed officer to put my hands on the wheel, they would be glued to the

steering wheel in a heartbeat.

Returning briefly to that shot teenager, no doubt his tearful Mother will soon be telling all who are prepared to listen what a ‘wonderful son’ and ‘good boy’ he had always been! If anyone is to blame here it is (as usual) the parents or, more often than not, the ‘absent father family,’ who have so little control or care for their offsprings that they are actually allowed to run amok at night carrying guns and knives. That is where the true problem lies; in the home.

Far too many ‘ladies’ from these so called ‘deprived’ areas appear to be so free and easy with their favours, they often end up with a whole brood of children from multiple fathers ‐ all absent and totally untraceable. No wonder their children are out of control. It’s time these people got their own houses in order before blaming society and the police for the wrongdoings of their errant offsprings.

RDMC’S - The supplier of glass curtains RDMC’S is a family‐run business with many years of experience in the glazing, construction and steel industry.

The business idea first came from Dan who wanted to start a glass manufacturing business making sealed units (double glazing) as back in the UK he was a line manager overseeing the making of such units. Dan started the business with his wife and parents‐in‐law in 2004 and Dan’s brother joined them not long after, so as the pair had grown with their father who owned a window and door manufacturers, it wasn’t long until the compa‐ ny expanded.

First, they changed locations from a small unit to a double sized factory and bought a toughening machine to produce glass for all requirements, then they gained the distribution and manufacture of SUNFLEX glass curtains and started their own in‐ house stainless‐steel welding and manufacture.

Lastly, they started manufacturing windows and doors, something Dan was extremely familiar with.

They soon went from a small family‐run business to a much larger operation employing many special‐ ists in their fields to manufacture and install.

Today it is still very much a family‐run business with more staff and family members than ever be‐ fore, all striving to carry on the good name and rep‐

RDMC’S: A familyrun business. utation that RDMC’S has obtained over the last 17 years on the coast. They are specialist manufactur‐ ers of glass curtains, stainless steel, UPVC & alumini‐ um, Bi‐folds, windows and doors and pool sur‐ rounds.

They use only the highest quality materials in‐ cluding 316 marine grade stainless steel so as not to cause corrosion problems.

They have their own glass toughening plant which means that the complete glass curtain sys‐ tem, including the glass, is manufactured under one roof. They also manufacture UPVC and aluminium windows and doors, as well as roofs, fixed or sliding (electric or manual), and complete steel structures.

In addition, RDMC’s produces acoustic glass for

bars, mirrors, table tops, sealed units, splash backs, shop fronts, shelves, walk on glass, stairs, glass balustrade, pool surrounds, in fact they can assist you with all your glass needs.

They also produce Bi‐fold doors and a system called OPENMAX which is new to the market and a video explaining this system is available upon re‐ quest or you could visit their Facebook page for in‐ stallation photos and videos of all their work.

The Glass Curtain system Sunflex that they man‐ ufacture is of typical German design, much time and thought has gone into the system making it one of, if not, the best system available on the mar‐ ket today.

The technique is completely different to other systems that are of similar price, as it is top hung which means that the weight of the glass is dis‐ tributed evenly and not all sitting on the bottom rubbing metal against metal.

They also have their own viewglass system, for a seamless balcony look that is proving very popular.

HAVE you been targeted by one of those ‘phishing’ scams doing the rounds recent‐ ly? You know, those scam emails pretend‐ ing to offer customers a tax rebate? Or worse still, you missed the January 31 deadline for online UK tax returns? If so, you’d better come up with a better excuse than those given by HM Revenue and Cus‐ toms as the worst examples people have come up with for filing / paying their tax return late.

These range from the usual “my pet dog ate my tax return … AND all the reminders”; “I was up a mountain in Wales, and couldn’t find a post box or get an internet signal” and “I was in Australia” to the “poor me” variety (“I fell in with the wrong crowd”; “I live in a camper van in a supermarket car park”; “a work colleague borrowed my tax return, to photocopy it, and didn’t give it back”; “my girlfriend’s pregnant”) to the truly bizarre

WORST EXCUSES: “My pet dog ate my tax return... AND all the reminders.” (“I’ve been busy looking after a flock of es‐ caped parrots and some fox cubs”; “I’ve been travelling the world, trying to escape from a foreign intelligence agency”).

Unsurprisingly, none of these led to a successful appeal ‐ or worthy of an award at Monday’s Oscars. To return, briefly, to ‘phishing’, maybe the best advice nowadays

is, sadly: ‘Trust nobody’.

The world in which we now live. Fake tradesmen in hi‐vis jackets knocking at your door to check some phoney gas‐leak/pipe‐ work ‘problem’ and walking out with your wallet. The elderly being palmed off with third‐rate stuff at outrageous prices. Or a worthless plot of land as an ‘investment’.

This happens, we all know it happens.

The answer may partly lie with the media: more publicity given about the punishment dished out to offenders to scare off those hell‐bent on committing such crimes. And more, much more success in catching the offenders...

What’s really disturbing is that the police often know who the offenders are, but can’t get enough people to testify against them. Perhaps we’re all to blame here.

From our Facebook Dear Leapy, As a regular reader of the Euro Weekly News I have to congratulate you on most of your comments since you have been writing your column, particularly this recent edition - 8 -14 April. However, as a successful pop artist of yesteryear, I am sure you would have appeared on some of the same gigs as Craig. We first met at a party in Holland Park shortly after his agent had persuaded him to change his name from Perkins, around 1961, I think. His love for sport, outside of showbiz, especially golf, made us life long mates. For quite a long period in the early 70s we both lived in Dolphin Square in Pimlico, quite by chance!!

However, my wife Liz and I have lived since 2005 as residents in the quiet village of Sant Elm (was San Telmo) here in Mallorca. Since then I have only returned to the UK, on three occasions, the last being 2012, when I was invited to appear in the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympic Games. On the first two visits to London, Craig and I met up for a beer, etc but in 2012, I could not find him at this penthouse flat at 709 Hawkins House, DS or on his landline telephone.

Short of time, I failed to find him, but from his Wikepedia details, I found that he had been paralysed from the waist down, having been bitten on the foot by a rare flea type creature, which had left him wheelchair bound for the rest of his life. All very sad, but being Craig, he still managed to appear on occasional gigs performing to his high standards from his wheelchair. SkyNews sponsored a benefit for him on 11 December 2011 at the Amersham Rock and Roll Club, and that is the only news I have of him in the past 10 years.

I have tried to contact him from here over the past 10 years but with no success, whatsoever. I can only imagine that he is living in a home for the disabled, somewhere in the London area. Can you help me in my quest to find him? It is so frustating not having any contact information, not even a telephone number, as a start.

I do hope you can bring me some news. Having been born on the Isle of Wight in 1941, he is a year younger than myself and must be having quite a hard time in these Covid-19 days.

Not in Spain right now!

Hello! I am writing this email from the UK. I was shocked to read in your press a week ago, that several British passengers who arrived at Alicante Airport, were stopped by Spanish Security Police and outrageously flanked by Armed personnel, to continue travel to their Spanish destinations.

Reading your report, it appears that according to these passengers, they had all their documentation, both legal and medical in order. But when they arrived in the airport there was a sign saying: NO TIE... NO ENTRY!

PCR TEST PRICING GENUINELY believing that we have earned the right to be known as ‘The People’s Paper’ amongst English-speaking residents and visitors to Spain, we try to champion causes that will be of interest and assist our readers both here and in the UK. CORRECTIONS

Although I do find the behaviour of the Spanish police reprimandable, having considered the stand-point view of these passengers, I do wonder whether these passengers did in fact have exactly everything covered.

Questions: 1. What exactly did the Spanish police find to be wrong with their documentation?

2. Were these passengers British Nationals going for a holiday?

3- Were these passengers British Nationals BUT already residents of Spain?

NB. This question is massively important, because it does involve the new Brexit procedure, related to two types of Spanish Residencies namely: * A4 Green Residencia Certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Union) * TIE Card (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranejro) Consequences: Any British National resident of Spain before 30 December 2020, and having with them the original A4 Green Residencia Certificate, and the correct medical test (PCR) and declaration form, they are legally allowed to enter Spain.

The A4 Green Certificate it is still completely legal and accepted by Spanish authorities.

Nevertheless it is advisable to apply for the new TIE Card if one continues to be a resident in Spain in the future.

The TIE Card must be used as from 1 January 2021.

Finally given the many disappointments some passengers are experiencing once landing in Spain. I wonder whether your paper, should also print an alert for all readers, by explaining the importance and facts related to Spanish Residency in 2021.

I have been trying to have the state of Calle Mozart improved for nigh on three years now but, despite soothing words from Sr Dolón, nothing has happened. At the north end of Calle Mozart, Calle Purcell’s tarmac stops dead at the point where it runs into Calle Mozart. At the south end Calle Rodrigo’s tarmac stops dead at the point where it runs into Calle Mozart! I have to ask, “What is the mayor’s problem with Calle Mozart?”

Our pot holes are filled in with clinker which shoots off in all directions as traffic drives over it. Pedestrians risk a stone bruising their ankles and cars are at risk of damage as the larger stones fire out in all directions.

However, until such time as vaccine passports are introduced which is unlikely before June at the earliest and with the roll out of the vaccine here in Spain still being relatively slow when compared to the UK, there will still be a need to take PCR tests.

We are campaigning for a reduction in the price in the UK but in Spain, there can be a very significant difference in the price of taking the test and also in the time it takes to receive the results.

There are reports of test costs

being well over €100 although on the Costa del Sol, one reputable clinic is charging just €40 with quick turnaround and the average is no more than €70, so it does pay to shop around.

What we all want to see is a return to the safe movement of people throughout Europe and the rest of the world, but with so many of our readers having family in the UK, it is imperative for them that they can once again have the chance to catch up with their loved ones without having to pay an arm and a leg.

MARBELLA MOMENTS

BY NICOLE KING DESPITE our April showers and ex‐ isting restrictions I’ve been out and about with my camera quite a bit lately to include some emblematic events and happenings in our city each week in MarbellaNow. Not to be missed are the behind the scenes recordings with the 4D team last weekend. Thanks to Anna Scott of the Makeup Room we firstly welcomed back Franky Lankester to the show a few weeks ago, so it was particularly nice to follow up with an interview, on location, with him and the director of the movie Tony Bianchi. Tony has lived in Spain for many years and speaks Spanish, which is a nice anecdote; at least for me as so many local foreigners don’t even try. He is obviously very artistic, turning his hand from producing to directing, to composing and writing; all with equal passion and aplomb.

I also had a chance to meet some of the other locals taking part in this production. None other than Lina Hodgkins, Marketing Director of the Lineker Group and sometimes ac‐

tress when needs be, was also on set to play the role of mum and grand‐ mother.

Anna Scott, as official make‐up artist for the film, had quite a job making her look old enough to be believable! Most of the other charac‐ ters and extras present were from the collaboration with the Marbella Film School. Nicole Moerland, the owner, and her students are all par‐ ticipating one way or another. This includes Chelsea, Franky Lankester’s daughter, who seemed to be enjoy‐ ing the whole experience, although not loving the fact that her daddy is playing the baddy.

The plot is a little dark to say the least, with the lead role spending 80 per cent of the time in a dark, en‐ closed space. Apparently Sarah’s au‐ dition to land the part entailed very little talking. I’m just relieved that I was part of a flashback scene with

everyone having fun; I’ll leave the rest for the release of the film so I can truly appreciate the plot.

It’s heart‐warming to see that even with the limitations and restric‐ tions of our new normal that our cre‐ ative community always lead the way in finding a way to make the most of it.

How can you confuse a gun?

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man A POLICE officer who shot and killed a driver during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, on Sunday afternoon, meant to deploy her Taser instead of her gun, police said. In a press conference on Monday, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said he believes the female officer intended to deploy her Taser when she ‘accidentally’ shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright.

How do you accidently confuse your gun with a Taser? To me an accident is knocking over your drink or maybe driving into the back of someone’s car, but shooting someone when you are a trained police officer isn’t an accident especially when your gun and Taser are on different sides of your belt.

My point here is that the USA is an absolute mess where guns and killing people are concerned apart from gawd knows how many mass shooting there are. Their police forces are particularly gun happy.

We live in a country where all police are armed, but I can’t think of one instance here where a police officer has pulled someone over

for a traffic violation and finished up shooting them dead. Never heard of any mass shootings either.

The reason might be that the average punter here can’t buy a gun, never mind ones that fires 10 to 20 rounds a second like the AR15. Let’s see if Biden will finally do something about it or will be bought off by the NRA. Shame about Prince Philip dying, totally politically incorrect bloke, but all in all he did a good job and was a great partner for the Queen. He was after all 99 years old and had a pretty good innings. But I do think the coverage of his death went overboard especially the BBC. The total blanket coverage of BBC1 and BBC2 was well over the top and other stations too with looped broadcasting hour after hour.

Then all the Royal correspondents were wheeled out giving their views.

They even invited members of the public to email in if they had met him. So basically anybody could have said they had met him without any confirmation just to get a shout out on the telly! I think it backfired as people turned off in their millions after a couple of hours and, in fact, Gogglebox, a TV programme about people watching TV programmes got higher ratings. But their biggest mistake, as far as Mrs S was concerned, was postponing the final of MasterChef!

I had to be really careful so I wouldn’t wake or upset you. Maintaining that mask was stressful; but for a while, everything seemed to be under control.

That was until a traumatic, life-changing experience triggered you to explode.

It was utterly devastating. You wreaked havoc in every area of my life. No matter how hard I tried, it was impossible to keep you out.

IT’S been 10 years since being diagnosed with you. Ten years of struggling to tame the violent chaos you’ve hurled into my mind. I wasn’t aware you had already started building camp at a young age. I thought you were nothing but a phase all teenagers go through. So I ignored you, thinking you’d eventually go away if I pretended you didn’t exist, I didn’t know any different.

But just like a shadow, you followed me everywhere I went. I tried to be oblivious to the selfdestructive thoughts you constantly whispered into my ear.

For a long time, I survived this constant battle with you. Little by little, I was successful keeping you quiet - the monster living inside msbipolar@euroweeklynews.com of me. It wasn’t easy;

I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t get out of bed and couldn’t stop my mind from racing. I felt alone, worthless and unloved. Some days I just felt nothing , numbness.

Ten years ago you were given many names: clinical depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, borderline personality disorder.

Bipolar 1 disorder. Finally. Your real name. After a long, frustrating journey, I now know who you really are and how I’m going to manage you. It’s definitely not been an easy ride - and it took a lot of time to get the right mix of medications to tame you - but I won’t let you destroy me again.

Thank you for showing me how much my family loves me, and how amazing my friends are. Without their support and understanding, I wouldn’t have been able to survive all the sh*t you put me through.

Slap on some cream Shake up your muscles AS temperatures begin to soar and layers of clothing begin to be shredded, spare some thought for your skin and remember to cover yourself in sun cream.

Protecting yourself from the sun could be one of the most important things you do for yourself this year as the incidence of skin cancer continues to rise, particularly among young adults.

Even if your skin tans easily, don’t think you don’t need sun protection. Skin turning brown is actually a sign of sun damage, even if there is no redness or peeling. It does this as a way of trying to protect itself because the UV rays are damaging living cells. And don’t shy away from using a high sun protection factor. Even SPF 50 only blocks up to 98 per cent of UV radiation.

Remember, skin cancer is serious and was the direct cause of over 2,500 deaths in each of Spain and the UK last year. Treatment for skin cancer involves much more than simply having a lesion removed.

It can include major surgery, chemotherapy and can result in per-

manent scarring. Skin cancer can also spread to other parts of your body.

The good news is that it is almost totally preventable, so follow the advice of the Aussies and take these five steps to protect yourself: ‘Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide!’

CREAM YOURSELF: Be careful to avoid your eyes.

WITH summer drawing ever closer, many people are starting to think about getting lean and muscular to swagger with confidence along the seafront.

Of course, in addition to watching your diet and attending the gym as much as possible, there are other things you can do - or rather take - to help you achieve your goals. And all you need is some protein powder, a shaker bottle and some water.

Protein supplements are an ever-popular option that can improve lean body mass and muscle strength. Fundamentally, they are shakes that consist of whey protein, although milk, soy, casein, egg, hemp, rice, and pea protein powders are also popular.

IF your dog suddenly loses their sense of balance they could be suffering from a seri‐ ous health problem that requires immedi‐ ate veterinary atten‐ tion. The condition re‐ lating to a sensory dysfunction that re‐ sults in a loss of coordi‐ nation in the dog’s head, limbs, or rear is called Ataxia.

There are three types of ataxia commonly seen in dogs: cerebellar, propioceptive and vestibular.

Cerebellar ataxia in dogs occurs when the cerebellum is affected and the main symptoms are loss of coordination, tremors, falling, and weakness. Proprioceptive ataxia is di‐ agnosed when the spinal cord is slowly compressed due to an intervertebral disk herniation, a tumour, trauma or a vascular infarct. This cause from an inability to properly place a foot on the ground when walking to a paralysis.

Vestibular ataxia is the result of a problem in the inner ear or brainstem and the main symptoms are loss of bal‐ ance, head tilt, nystagmus (rapid eye movements) and leaning or circling to one side.

A neurological exam, blood tests are required and in most cases a CT scan or MRI will be necessary.

Manufacturers have be‐ come expert at smaller ca‐ pacity, more efficient engines that still possess decent per‐ formance. My Arteon’s 2.0‐ litre, four‐cylinder petrol en‐ gine passes the benchmark 100 kph in 7.8 seconds and a 233 kph maximum speed while returning, during my week of mostly local driving, 8.3 litres/100 km. There’s even the option of a plug‐in hybrid.

The Arteon Shooting Brake isn’t a small car, in fact it looks even larger thanks to its design, and inside it feels spacious. Standard kit is good with such fare as keyless en‐ try and start and tailgate, a superb panoramic sunroof and much, much more.

There’s the usual VW solid, quality feel, it’s a car that combines the very best of practical SUVs and traditional estates without their bulk and boxiness. It’s a car that’s a very class act.

Lexus LS Luxury Flagship THE updated Lexus LS luxury saloon flagship comes bristling with new technology, new styling and ‘even smoother driving performance,’ accord‐ ing to the manufacturer ‐ BMW’s 7 Series rival is avail‐ able to order in a choice of three trim levels.

An LS standard is priced from approx €91,000 with an op‐ tional Premium upgrade package ‐ priced at €8,889 ‐ adding heated rear seats, an upgraded stereo and four‐zone climate control.

Mid‐range F Sport trim costs €99,981 and brings a perfor‐ mance‐inspired body‐kit along‐ side extra equipment including the brand’s new BladeScan adaptive headlights, while the top‐rung Takumi trim is priced from €122,000, and includes a digital rear‐view mirror, be‐ spoke 20in alloy wheels and 22‐ way electrically adjustable front seats.

Top of the revisions to the LS range is a revamped hybrid drive system that aims to im‐ prove the driving experience in Normal mode, which, Lexus says, is where the average LS

The Seat Leon 1.0 UNLESS you’re the kind of per‐ son who is always in a hurry the extra 28bhp of the new Desire Red 1.5‐litre turbo petrol Leon is very welcome, but if that’s not enough, you could be tempted by the addi‐ tional 20bhp on offer for an‐ other approx €890.

The Seat Leon has an impres‐ sive variety of powertrains available also. There is a mild‐ hybrid version of the 1.0 TSI; a 113bhp 2.0‐litre diesel; and a 1.4 TSI petrol‐electric plug‐in hybrid with 201bhp and a 40‐ mile electric‐only range ‐ you can order a dual‐clutch auto‐ matic gearbox too.

The 1.0 TSI Leon is very satis‐ fying to drive. Its modest en‐ gine, keen chassis and taut steering combine to make this an enjoyable car with which to explore Spain’s inviting and mainly flat country roads.

SAD news to start this week as our Referee Brian Simmons’ fu‐ neral took place in London last Monday, April 19.

Brian’s son Andrew ar‐ ranged for a ‘link’ to be set up whereby the many people who knew Brian could watch the Fu‐ neral Service ‘live’ from Lon‐ don.

On Wednesday April 21 we saw the return clash between Calahonda and Benalamdena Seniors. Benalamdena were looking for revenge after losing 3‐0 at home in the first match.

The Calahonda team consisted of players all over 70, which is quite remarkable in itself. Full Report in next week’s Euro Weekly News.

Like most clubs last Thursday April 15, Nerja were unable to train due to rain so they decid‐ ed they would have a Breakfast Monthly Meeting instead, which as can be seen from the photo was well attended and enjoyed.

Iberia have agreed in principle to co‐organise an International Tournament in June 2022.

Confirmed entries are Scot‐ land, England, and Ireland and provisional agreement from

Spain. Invitations will also be sent to Portugal, Gibraltar and the Basque Country. The venue will be decided at a later date with a consensus of all teams taking part.

WEDNESDAY MATCH: Calahonda Over 70’s (Green) who play Benalmadena Seniors.

The latest club to join WFAI are Hondon Valley Flyers who are 40 kms from Alicante. They are very welcome and we are sure they will bring fresh ideas to help take WFAI forward.
