SET TO REOPEN

GOOD NEWS for the Costa del Sol after Covid rates in various municipalities within Malaga Province have fallen below 500 per 100,000, making it look likely that some borders will reopen this weekend.

The Junta de Andalucia will make the decision whether to reopen these areas at their weekly Thursday meeting today, with the towns looking set to have border restrictions lifted if case numbers continue to fall.

On Wednesday February 16, preceding the meeting of the Junta, figures fell to 418 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Malaga , 409 per 100,000 in Fuengirola, 438 in Benalmadena, whilst the numbers in Mijas had dropped to 474.3 per 100,000.

At the time of going to press the decision to reopen borders looks almost certain, and once a decision is announced, towns would be able to reopen from this Saturday February 20.

Many of the largest towns in Malaga Province are, at the time of going to press, below the 500 cases per 100,000 people limit, including Nerja, Torrox, Velez-Malaga, Antequera, Rincon de la Victoria, Alhaurin

de la Torre, Alhaurin el Grande, Cartama and Coin.

Meanwhile, Ronda, Estepona, Marbella and Manilva are still above this number, therefore their border restrictions will remain for the time being, although businesses are allowed to open.

While Covid figures continue to fall in most parts of Andalucia, officials are still warning residents to be careful and abide by existing laws and local restrictions to prevent the virus figures rising again. Currently restrictions limit gatherings to a maximum of four people at a time.

MARBELLA mayor, Ángeles Muñoz invited a representative of the local taxi association Taxisol to the Council Chambers to thank the taxi drivers for their commitment over the last year.

She recognised that the drivers had been significantly affected by loss of business due to the pandemic, but despite this not only did they carry on, but volunteered their service on more than 500 occasions to give free lifts to those in need and to cheer up children on their birthdays.

Last year, the council allocated €120,000 to Taxisol to underwrite the running of their switchboard and for 2021, this amount will be increased to €150,000 in order to ensure that this important local public service continues to serve residents and visitors.

It is estimated that the taxi sector lost up to 70 per cent of its turnover during 2020 and because it is so important to the smooth operation of the city, the council will continue to treat drivers as front-line workers and ensure that they are tested on a regular basis.

THE Association of Families and Women in Rural Areas (AFAMMER) has been recognised by the European Economic and Social Com‐ mittee (EESC) with a special award.

The awards are given to projects carried out in the EU that have made an exceptional contribution to the fight against Covid‐19 and its consequences.

Launched in 2020 on a one‐off basis under the slogan ‘Civil society against Covid‐19,’ the organisers chose AFAMMER because during the early stages of the pandemic, its mem‐ bers produced half a million masks and other health protection material.

All items were donated to hospitals, old people’s homes, taxi drivers, the elderly and particularly exposed groups.

Real Fake Crime POLICE in Marbella have re‐ leased new details in the case of a fake armed robbery that reportedly took place in one of the town’s supermarkets.

According to deputy inspec‐ tor Teodoro Garzon, police sus‐ pected the supermarket’s man‐ ager after he reported the robbery on November 28 last year. An armed man supposedly broke into the office, held up the manager and made off with a safe.

Garzon told one publication: “He was overactive, too nervous for what had happened.”

Officers investigating the crime found a mobile phone nearby, on what they believed was the robber’s escape route.

Analysis of the phone led them to a 29‐year‐old German man with various convictions for crimes against property. After searching his home, police re‐ portedly found the supermar‐ ket’s safe there.

Gibraltar battles oil spill THE Gibraltar Port Authority (GPA), in conjunction with other agencies, has continued with the clean‐up op‐ eration caused by an oil spill in the early hours of last Friday morning, February 12.

On Sunday February 14, efforts were being focused on the re‐ trieval of oil around the harbour and the Gibraltar Bay with assets from both the private sector and the public sector being deployed accordingly.

All cost attributed to this incident will be recovered from the vessel, believed to be registered in Liberia and until such time that payment is received, the vessel will remain de‐ tained in Gibraltar waters.

The Gibraltar Government insists that there is no credible evidence to substantiate reports in some media of oil from this spill being present on land on the Spanish side of the bay and observed that this is the first spill in Gibraltar waters in many years.

They also found that the sus‐ pect was friends with the super‐ market’s manager, a 41‐year‐old Spanish man, and that the two had allegedly planned the rob‐ bery by WhatsApp. According to police, a mes‐ sage allegedly read: ‘You come in, after lowering the side rail‐ ings I will be at the office door, you point your gun at me, I open the safe for you and you go.’

Both men have since been ar‐ rested.

Boutique hotel refurbishment A NORDIC owned company which is based in Puerto Banus has applied for planning permission to reopen the boutique style hotel in La Alcaidesa.

The existing Quercus hotel in La Hacienda residential district had four-star status even though it has just nine bedrooms as well as a cafeteria and restaurant area.

Based on two floors with a basement, assuming that approval for its refurbishment is given by the La Linea de la Concepcion Council it is planned to have the work, which includes a car park, completed so that the hotel may catch the summer trade. Local councillor for Tourism Mercedes Atanet has indicated that she is very much in favour of this proposal as it shows a commitment to tourism in La Linea, despite the setbacks and difficulties encountered due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Holiday cover jobs THE Torremolinos Council will on March 3 start interviews in the final phase of selection of recruitment for labourers and cleaners to cover sick leave and holidays.

All positions are covered by a maximum period of two years with the municipally owned cleaning company Litosa.

Interviews will be held three days a week over a period of three weeks and a final list of successful candidates is expected to be published on April 2.

Among the requirements required, applicants needed to prove that they were at least 16 years of age and hold a primary school certificate or equivalent. Applicants for the places reserved for people with disabilities had to prove their disability by means of a document issued by the competent body.

Motorhomes eviction

STANDING at the spot of a recently cleared illegal camp site, Torremolinos councillor for Se‐ curity, Antonio Ruiz, together with the chief inspector of the Local Police, José Miguel Ávila explained their decision.

There had been a mass eviction of some 30 motorhomes and vans that had camped in an area of Los Alamos which is not equipped for this purpose and which represented a potential health hazard for local residents. “The Torremolinos Town Hall wants to ensure that the regu‐ lations are complied with. We respect the right of any person to sleep in their motorhome but we cannot allow irregular campsites to be created,” explained Antonio Ruiz.

The action was taken earlier in the week by Local Police officers who confirmed that the motorhomes, vans and even a trailer were camped improperly in the field.

“It is a health hazard. The permitted areas must have water collection facilities, among oth‐ er things,” the ouncillor pointed out.

LAST November, the Marbella Council recruited 15 new firefighters who have now completed 400 hours of training and shadowing existing officers so that in early March they will be added to the existing force bringing the total number of firefighters to 78.

A MUCH‐LOVED and integral part of the Benal‐ madena community, Ivy Rhodes, has celebrat‐ ed her 100th birthday. Ivy was born on Febru‐ ary 11, 1921, in Dudley, and made Benalmadena home 40 years ago. She is now a hugely loved member of the local community.

Mayor, Victor Navas took the opportunity to wish the centenarian a happy birthday. Pictures posted on Facebook show him presenting Ivy with a beautiful bouquet and a touching card.

According to Benalmadena for Residents Facebook page, “Ivy is a much loved and recog‐ nised figure in and around Arroyo, always avail‐ able if anyone needs her help.

“In the absence of Covid, her intention was to throw a large party for 100 persons plus, to have a ‘knees‐up’ and say thank you to all her friends for their kindness and friendship over the years.

“We do hope Ivy will be able to make a big celebration once the pandemic is over.”

Theatre to reopen Coffee capsules THE Cervantes Theatre in Malaga City is to re‐ sume its activity and opens its doors in March to Arcángel, who will present his Abecedario flamenco on Saturday March 6, to Ara Malikian and his return with his Little Garage show on Sunday March 7 and to Manu Sánchez, who will bring three performances of El gran emi‐ grante to Malaga on Friday March 12 and Sat‐ urday March 13.

Malaga’s municipal theatres demonstrate their ability to adapt to the health circum‐ stances, offering new shows and adjusting their presentations, schedules and seating capacity to the regulations to contain the pandemic.

The doors reopen with the classical music of the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra with con‐ certs on Saturday February 27 and the first chil‐ dren’s performances at the Echegaray (The Trav‐ els of Jules Verne on Sunday February 21 and New Shoes on Sunday February 28).

AS individuals and councils become more aware of the need to recycle, there are al‐ ways different products which are diffi‐ cult to categorise and one type is the cof‐ fee capsules that so many use.

According to Torremolinos Council, they can fall into different categories and al‐ though logic suggests that they should go into yellow containers (used for recycling cans and plastic bottles etc) this is only the case if there are no coffee grounds left in‐ side, otherwise they need to be thrown in the grey bin as general rubbish.

In the same way that batteries are be‐ ing recycled in special containers held in shops and supermarkets, a similar collec‐ tion scheme is beginning to take off but only for specific brands, so you need to en‐ quire when you purchase the capsules if your vendor takes back the empties.

Spanish Association against Cancer THE mayor of Mijas, Josele González and the councillor for So‐ cial Services, Hipóli‐ to Zapico visited the local headquarters of the Spanish Asso‐ ciation Against Can‐ cer (AECC) late last week.

The intention was to convey their sup‐ port for the organi‐ sation which pro‐ vides support for more than 300 resi‐ dents of Mijas and Fuengirola.

Having allocated €20,000 to the AECC last year, the mayor wanted to discover what other assis‐ tance the council could give to the charity in order to cope with the effects of the pandemic on cancer patients dur‐ ing 2021.

“The AECC is a group that provides an essential and pri‐ ority service and de‐ spite these circum‐ stances, nothing has changed for them, they continue to of‐ fer the same services, treating the same pa‐ tients, the vast ma‐ jority from Mijas,” said the mayor.

Councillor Zapico added, “In this diffi‐ cult situation that we are going through, we want to encourage neigh‐ bourhood collabora‐ tion and we cannot forget about these social entities, therefore, from here, I ask that we all continue to col‐ laborate with them, either with small fi‐ nancial contribu‐ tions or with actions such as volunteering so that the services they provide are not diminished or cut back.”

Letters wanted LETTERS are needed to cheer up people in Malaga Regional Hospital. During the first wave of the pandemic, Belen Navarrete, a nurse in the Infectious Diseases launched a campaign, asking for emails to cheer up patients who are in hospital with Covid-19.

To begin with, the letters arrived every day. As many as 3,000 letters were received, not only from Malaga, but from the rest of Andalucia and Spain and even from countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Mexico and Argentina.

However, they have stopped coming and there are still many people in hospital who have no

High Profile Police Only Eight MIJAS Town Hall will continue with its high-profile community police presence, in a bid to bring the coronavirus numbers under control and avoid a return to previous restrictions, which would further harm local trade.

Police are vigilant.

Since January 23, the Local Police and Civil Protection have been patrolling sensitive areas of the town, such as the Senda Litoral, the Los Olivos and El Esparragal recreational parks, municipal parks, and the access routes to the trails of the Sierra de Mijas. Since the start of February, there has been reported 212 cases of people breaching the coronavirus restrictions, and the town hall is urging residents to please abide by the rules, as positive case numbers currently are on the decrease.

Age Care Association AGE CARE is gearing up to getting back to their regular coffee mornings and in the meantime have been phoning and emailing its members so they are not ‘alone.’ THey have already reopened the charity shop in Calahonda to great success.

Over the past months Age Care has helped members to obtain the TIE cards, to install the

government sponsored Tele-Assist emergency phone line, as well as the visits to hospitals, clinics and doctors. Age Care is now waiting to be able to advise members on the eligibility and procedure required for the Vaccine programme.

IN his speech in Parliament on February 10, Jesús Aguirre, Minister of Health of the Junta de Andalucia, spoke of the terrible shortage of Covid-19 vaccine doses in Andalucia.

Mr Aguirre said, “Our goal is to vaccinate all Andalucians as soon as possible, but it will be a long process that will last months. I wish that immunity could be achieved for 70 per cent of the population at the beginning of June, but we would need a huge volume of vaccines. We have prepared personnel, the material, but we lack the vaccines.”

He continued, “We are receiving them with a dropper, those that had to arrive do not arrive. The government says that it will give us a ‘timeline’ of vaccines for March and April so that we can organise the groups to be treated. With the forecast we have, at the current speed, we would only reach 8 per cent of the population".

Vaccines To Be Made In Spain REYES MAROTO, the Spanish Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, announced this week that at least four firms in Spain will begin manufacturing Covid-19 vaccines and that the government is in talks to close a deal with another fifth pharmaceutical firm, reports Diario Sur. Ms Maroto said that the government is working tirelessly to bring about a future without Covid-19, whilst seizing the opportunity for the Spanish pharmaceutical industry to be more competitive and modern.

Insud Pharma will manufacture the AstraZeneca vaccine, Rovi is going to be manufacturing the Moderna vaccine,

Reig Jofre will make the Janssen vaccine, and production of the Novavax antigen will by Biofabri.

The Minister said, “This will accelerate the distribution of these vaccines in Spain, and we are working so that there will be more, because the country is very well positioned in the European Union both in the production of active principles and in the final stages of filling the medicine.”

She also mentioned that the government are working on the possibility of a vaccination passport that, in the future, would allow safe mobility to take place both within S pain and the E uropean Union.

83 Per Cent Drop

AIRPORTS: The number of passengers during 2020 dropped hugely.

SPAIN’S airport operator, AENA, has reported the number of air passengers in Spain has dropped by more than 83 per cent during the pandemic.

The figures from last month showed just 2.8 million passengers travelled in Spain, significantly less than the same month last year.

In total, there were 2,814,424 passengers across 61,440 flights, with the number of passengers on international flights dropping by 88.7 per cent and the number of domestic ones falling by 74 per cent.

The news comes after Fernando Valdes, Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism, said the country will once again welcome foreign holidaymakers in summer 2021.

Speaking with one publication he said: “We’re putting all our efforts into making sure we have a decent summer from a health and tourist point of view.

“By summer we want to see a gradual recovery of international tourism beginning with our European neighbours.”

No Quarantine for Brits SPAIN’S Tourism Minister Fernando Valdes has fuelled hopes of the return of tourism. According to one publica‐ tion, the politician has said that the country is likely to use a vaccine pass‐ port system this summer and British tourists will not have to quarantine.

Mr Valdes said: “In Spain, we aim to have at least 70 per cent of the adult population immune by summer so I’d say to British people, ‘Keep open your expectations regarding holidays in Spain. We’re looking forward to wel‐ coming you again’.”

He added, “a vaccine passport or

similar documentation” would help travellers “regain flexibility.”

The politician said Spain did not have any plans to place a quarantine on tourists. He said: “We have other means beyond vaccines to control the transmission such as test before travel, facial masks, social distancing.

“We’re going to keep all these mea‐ sures as long as necessary to let tourism recover gradually and as the pandemic evolves.

“New vaccines approved will give us the necessary impulse to achieve our plan.”

Fishing Licences Furore THE UK Government has already grant‐ ed dozens of fishing licences to EU firms to allow them to operate within the 12‐ mile limit of British waters, even when Brussels refused to lift the block on live shellfish exports into Europe from UK firms, as reported by Express.co.uk.

Since Brexit, a new regulation pro‐ hibits UK firms exporting live shellfish to the continent, crippling the fishing industry, and there had been reports that in retaliation to this regulation, the British Government would with‐ hold fishing permits.

Michael Gove, when asked about

the possibility of stopping those fishing licences, in the House of Commons on February 11, replied, “It is important that we reserve our own rights when it comes to making sure that the EU lives up to its side of the bargain.”

It has been revealed that licences to allow EU member state fishermen to operate within the 12‐mile limit had al‐ ready started being given out as far back as January 29, by the UK Single Is‐ suing Authority (SIA). As many as 80 li‐ cences have been approved, including 59 for French firms, and 17 for Belgian firms.

Catalan results THE PSC socialist party and their leader Salvador Illa are celebrat‐ ing a ‘very good’ result in the Catalan elections of February 14.

“Catalonia has given a lesson in civics and maturity,” said Illa.

“Hope is always stronger than fear.”

The former Health Minister celebrated saying “change is here to stay.” The victory, he added, “is a step forward” and change “is unstoppable” be‐ cause “Catalonia loves Spain and Spain loves Catalonia.”

Miquel Iceta, the party’s First Secretary, has celebrated the re‐ sults. “You had to go to vote, it was safe to vote.” In addition, he wanted to remember “all the victims of the pandemic” and the healthcare personnel “who continue to fight on the front line.”

Regarding the elections, he stressed that such a result had not been achieved “since the time of Maragall” and the result validates “the commitment to dialogue made by Pedro Sanchez.”

You be the judge AFTER presenting two new songs Memoria and Voy a Quedarme (I’m Going to Stay), as his proposed entry, Spain’s Eurovision Song Contest candidate, Blas Canto and composers were accused of plagiarism.

A Twitter user pointed out that the song Memoria was identical to Thai Food, a song by Rakky Ripper.

Rakky Ripper responded quickly, saying that the song demoed in 2016 was uploaded to SoundCloud in the summer of 2019, when he says he approached several major record companies, such as Sony Music, Universal Music and Warner Music, the company to which Blas Cantó belongs.

Rakky Ripper released his album independently in September 2019, and hinted that his song might have been used to create Memoria. “It might be coincidence,” he said “don’t blame me, it was other people who found the similarity, I just retweeted it.

“Of course there are other similar songs, but here the phrasing, tone, rhymes with the letter ‘i’ and we even say the word ‘I’ at the same time, technically if I wanted to, I could sue,” he said.

Vitamin D Could Help VITAMIN D when used to treat Covid‐19 could help save lives according to research carried out at Barcelona’s Hospital del Mar in Spain.

MP David Davis, the former Brexit secretary has said that the findings be‐ long to a “very important study.” The Social Science Research Network pub‐ lished the findings.

The Hospital del Mar in Barcelona has been treating Covid‐19 patients with calcifediol, a type of vitamin D and research has proven very promising.

Davis took to Twitter and tweeted that, “The findings of this large and well conducted study should result in this therapy being administered to every Covid patient in every hospital in the temperate latitudes.

“Furthermore, since the study demonstrates that the clear relationship between vitamin D and Covid mortality is causal, the UK government should increase the dose and availability of free vitamin D to all the vulnerable groups.

“These approaches will save many thousands of lives. They are overdue and should be started immediately.”

In Britain 12,000 men each year die from prostate cancer with a stagger‐ ing one in eight getting the disease, making it Britain’s biggest killer.

The ‘Prostagram’ technology from Imperial College can recognise double the cases of the standard blood test and it is thought that many men would prefer the ‘Prostagram’ over a traditional rectal exam, that can be off putting to many.

Professor Hashim Ahmed, Senior Author and Chair of Urology at Impe‐ rial College London explained that, “Prostagram has the potential to form the basis of a fast, mobile national screening programme for prostate cancer and could be a game‐changer.

“Prostagram also has the potential to detect more aggressive cancers ear‐ lier and pass over the many cancers which don’t need to be diagnosed.

“By finding these aggressive can‐ cers at the earliest opportunity, men have the chance to be offered less in‐ vasive treatments with fewer side ef‐ fects.”

Five million apply to stay THE Home Office has now received 4.9m applications under the EU settlement scheme and has granted permanent resident status to 4.3m applicants so far.

Croatia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Latvia, Estonia, Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta all have populations of less than five million.

Michael Gove said: “It is a great advertisement for this country. People have chosen to stay in unprecedented numbers.

sense that was propagated at the time of the Brexit vote that somehow the UK was less welcoming or that EU citizens would leave, or that there would be harm to our universities or to our healthcare sector.”

The ONS (Office for National Statistics) reported that around 700,000 foreign workers from across the world are believed to have left Britain during the pandemic between July and September.

Home Secretary Priti Patel welcomed the figures, saying: “That is why we put people at the heart of the scheme, knowing that behind these applications are stories of those who have established roots here. We promised we would make it as straightforward as possible for them to continue living their lives here. So I’m immensely proud that figures will show five million applications to the EU Settlement Scheme.”

Jab at work?

Glovo Expands SPANISH home delivery service Glovo has flourished during the pandemic.

With many bars and restaurants reduced to offering take-out only, many business owners turned to the Barcelona-born service. The Spanish company closed 2020 with more than 18,000 new associated establishments.

“In 2020, the different restrictions derived from the pandemic have had a great impact on the economy as a whole,” the company told Spanish daily OKDIARIO. More than 9,000 restaurants and establishments have joined Glovo since the start of the pandemic, of which 90 per cent are small and mediumsized companies, some of which wouldn’t have been able to facilitate food delivery without an outside agency.

Glovo partnered up with pharmacies last year to deliver medication, and plans to invest €20 million throughout 2021 to strengthen its ties with supermarkets.

Its objective “is to connect users not only with restaurants but also with supermarkets and other establishments in their city, including toy, electronics and video game stores, gifts, beauty or perfumery, among others, and with delivery in less than 30 minutes.”

Wine and beer excluded THE Junta de Andalucia announced that the new law banning the sale of alcohol after 6pm will only apply to spirits with an alcohol volume of over 21 per cent.

The surprise move will allow Andalucian residents to still purchase wine, beer, cider, and other products without time restrictions. In the statement, the Junta said that “spirits cannot be considered staple goods” but other alcohols would not be included ‐ which took effect from February 14.

The government explained that “the purchase of spirits is associated with meetings of certain age groups” ‐ saying that the ban on high volume alcohol will prevent gatherings of young people as seen across the region despite lockdown measures.

President Juanma Moreno said the ban on spirit sales after 6pm will help Andalucian cities and towns “avoid consumption in the street and reinforce respect for the limitations.”

3,327 Tonnes To Charity MERCADONA reportedly donated 3,327 tonnes of products to soup kitchens, food banks, and other chari‐ ties throughout Andalucia during 2020, the equivalent of 55,450 shopping trolleys.

This is almost double the amount of food and other staple items that the supermarket chain had donated in 2019, having added 19 new soup kitchens to their previ‐ ous 85.

In the province of Malaga alone, during 2020, Mer‐ cadona donated a whopping 403 tonnes of products, col‐ laborating with the Malaga Food Bank, the Malaga Red Cross, soup kitchens, and other charities. Mercadona’s customers also donated 652 tonnes of food.

Brexit Clarification Following on from my article ‘British and Brexit’, last week, I received a few letters from EWN readers, and would like to clarify the points that were raised:

THERE is great confusion among British holders of an EU residence card (or EU citizen certificate) as to whether or not they are obliged to apply for a non‐EU foreigner’s resi‐ dence card (TIE).

The UK Withdrawal Agreement establishes that it will be up to each member state to decide whether or not to oblige British residents in its territory to ex‐ change the ‘green card’ for the TIE, and to this end it provides as a general rule in its Article 18, para‐ graph 1, letter b) that the applica‐ tion (for the TIE) must be made within the first six months of 2021, although it provides that it may be requested after that period if the reason for not doing so earlier is justified. This is the general rule.

BUT it so happens that Spain has chosen not to make it compul‐ sory, and here lies the confusion.

Do I have to do it before June 30?

Can I do it whenever I want?

Do I ever even have to do it?

BREXIT CONFUSION: The British are no longer citizens of the European Union.

As an expert in processing for‐ eigners and knowing the mentali‐ ty of the authorities, my advice is to make the change as soon as possible, and if possible within the first six months of this year, al‐ though if it is done later there should be no problem.

You have to take into account that the British are no longer citi‐ zens of the European Union and it makes no sense to keep a docu‐ ment that does not correspond to

the actual real situation.

It must be taken into account that all British citizens will have to apply for a new, exclusively British passport in which the term ‘Euro‐ pean Union’ does not appear and it would be contradictory to have a non‐EU passport and a residence permit as an EU citizen.

It should also be kept in mind that if they travel to other EU Member States they may not be admitted for having exceeded 90

days of stay within the EU accord‐ ing to their passport and their EU residence card may not be accept‐ ed as a valid document in those States.

For all these reasons, among others, it is clear that sooner or lat‐ er all British residents in Spain will have to apply for the TIE. Having said that, I will now an‐ swer the questions posed: 1. Do I have to do it before June 30? No, you don’t have to do it before June 30.

2. Can I do it whenever I want?

Yes, you can do it whenever you want.

3. Do I ever even have to do it?

Yes, you will have to do it sooner or later.

It is very easy to do so now. In the future nobody knows.

Impossible Burgers THE FDA is facing a massive lawsuit after complaints that an additive in plant‐based Impossible Burgers to make them look like they are ‘bleeding’ is dangerous for human health. The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) launched the legal action claiming that not enough testing had been done on the additive, de‐ signed to give vegan products a more meat‐like appearance.

“FDA approved soy leghe‐ moglobin even though it conducted none of the long‐term animal stud‐ ies that are needed to determine whether or not it harms human health,” said Bill Freese, who is a sci‐ ence policy analyst at the CFS. “We find this to be all the more troubling because a number of po‐ tential adverse effects were detect‐ ed in a short‐term rat trial: disrup‐ tion of reproductive cycles and reduced uterine weights in females, and biomarkers of anaemia, re‐ duced clotting ability, and kidney problems.”

Impossible Foods has hit back at the CFS, claiming that it is an “anti‐ GMO, anti‐science organisation that has been spreading lies about Im‐ possible Foods for years.”

Brit Offers Endangered Animals TAKE AIM SAFARIS, a compa‐ ny running safaris in Johan‐ nesburg and Zimbabwe, has reportedly emailed clients try‐ ing to encourage them to go to South Africa to hunt and kill endangered species that they claim are plentiful since the pandemic.

The Sunday People saw an email sent out to 3,000 clients globally, by the company owner, Carl Knight, in which he wrote, ‘Big elephant and trophy buffalo + hippo, croc are plentiful.’

King Carlos Doing OK REPORTS about the health of Spain’s former King, Juan Carlos, from Spanish journalist Pilar Eyre, were denied by the Spanish Royal Family.

According to Eyre, author of several books on the Spanish monarchy, the former Spanish monarch, was in critical condition. She tweeted: ‘King Juan Carlos is in grave condition and the Royal House is evaluating the possibility of his transfer to Spain.’

She claimed King Felipe VI’s sisters ‐ Infanta Ele‐ na, Duchess of Lugo, and Cristina Federica, Infanta of Spain ‐ have flown to the Emirates to visit their

father, which is true. They are expected to return to Spain soon. However, according to Spanish mag‐ azine, Hola!, Carlos said: “I am fine. I do two hours of gymnastics a day and I feel very good.”

The Palace of Zarzuela also made a statement: “Faced with certain alleged information on the state of health of His Majesty King Don Juan Carlos, sources from the House of His Majesty the King in‐ dicate that they have no basis.”

Last year it was also published that he was ad‐ mitted by Covid and the Zarzuela came out to deny it.

It continued, ‘The areas are well‐rested, the animal move‐ ment is fantastic. I have quota available on the big cats, leop‐ ard, and lion plus elephant bulls at unbeatable prices,’ ac‐ companied by photographs of trophy hunters posing with their ‘kill’.

According to the Sunday People, Mr Knight is charging clients £14,500 to kill a lion, and £10,000 for an elephant, but claims that the creatures are ‘plentiful’ did not go down well with the World Wildlife Foundation, who say there are only around 415,000 African elephants in exis‐ tence, with them facing ex‐ tinction, and also African lions are said to be down to just 20,000 in the wild.

Riots Cause €30,000 Damage THE town hall of Linares, Jaén, estimates that €25,000 and €30,000 worth of dam‐ age was caused during the ri‐ oting on February 13.

Demonstrators took to the streets to protest after an incident in which two off‐ duty police officers one of whom was a deputy inspec‐ tor, had beaten up a man and his 14‐year‐old daughter on February 12. Hostilities erupted in the vicinity of the police station, with crowds of people throwing objects at police officers, and setting fire to rubbish containers.

As a result 20 officers were reported injured, while 13 members of the public were detained, including two mi‐ nors, all of whom have been provisionally released. The damage listed included: bus shelters, rubbish containers, traffic signs, fencing, and traf‐ fic light control panels.

The two officers at the centre of the incident have since been jailed by a judge.

Device Data Warning THE Guardia Civil issued new advice about disposing of old devices telling the public that; Two out of every five mobile phones, personal computers and devices sold, contain per‐ sonal data.

“Whenever you are going to get rid of them, you must for‐ mat them or reset them to factory settings.”

Consumers should follow advice given by The Office for Internet Users (OSI) when sell‐

ing any of their old devices.

OSI said: “Most users think that erasing the files and data from the memory of our de‐ vices is enough, however, the stored information can be re‐ covered with relatively simple methods available to anyone.”

The body recommended: “Delete all information from browsers (cookies, history, cre‐ dentials). Web browsers usual‐ ly store information (web pages we visit, favourites, cookies, saved credentials, etc) that you can delete, to erase all traces. Cookies, autosaved credentials and history can be easily deleted from the options of your favourite browser.

“Finally, restore to factory state. All smartphones and tablets have this option to re‐ turn it to the original point. It is a very simple process that will format the information stored on your device. In the case of desktops, you may think that it is enough to for‐ mat it, but it is not. We recom‐ mend you use secure erasure tools that you will find on OSI.”

PLANS to build an undersea tunnel linking Northern Ireland to Great Britain could possibly get the go‐ahead as soon as next month, the Telegraph reported.

The tunnel, being dubbed ‘Boris’ Burrow,’ would be around the same length as the Channel Tunnel and, if constructed, would help to unblock trade which has been hit by Brexit.

The Prime Minister is awaiting the findings of a study by Sir Pe‐ ter Hendy, the chairman of Network Rail, on the feasibility of a link between Stranraer in Scotland, and Larne in Northern Ireland. The interim report is expected in the next few weeks, and may recom‐ mend commissioning a formal feasibility study of the project.

Alister Jack, the Scottish secretary, interviewed by Chopper’s Politics podcast, said he favoured a tunnel because “a bridge would be closed for probably 100 days a year with the weather in the Irish Sea. My strong inclination would be that he thinks it should be a tunnel, because he and I have had conversations about the weather patterns in the Irish Sea and Beaufort’s Dyke, and there’s a munitions deposit there.”

LASTMINUTE.COM has been warned it must refund £1 million (€1.14 million) to customers for their cancelled holidays or face legal action. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) claim the travel firm still owes 2,600 customers refunds promised for their cancelled holidays.

According to the CMA, the company failed to repay holidaymakers within 14 days of their package holiday being cancelled on or after December 3.

It is also accused of telling some customers to speak directly to the airline to get the cost of their flight back, in breach of consumer rules.

Under a 2018 law, if a package holiday is cancelled by the provider customers are entitled to a full refund from the agent within 14 days. Millions of holidaymakers had their holidays cancelled in 2020 due to Covid.

The CMA had also written to more than 100 package holiday firms, including Virgin Holidays, TUI and Sykes Cottages, to remind them to comply with the law.

CANCELLED: Customers must be refunded for holidays.

After receiving complaints from Lastminute.com customers, the CMA told the company in November to repay

what it owed by January 31, 2021.

According to the CMA, €1.14 million of that is still owed.

Anthea Outrage ANTHEA TURNER has been accused of fat and disability shaming after posting a meme of an obese McDonald’s customer in a wheelchair berating a thin young woman for not wearing a mask.

The former Blue Peter presenter, 60, shared an illustration con‐ deming people for telling others to wear masks on Twitter. The car‐ toon woman stated, “Put a mask on! You’re putting my health at risk!” to a surprised looking individual. But the decision appeared to have backfired with some fans claiming the image was ignorant and offensive to people disabled through no choice of their own.

The tweet came shortly after she posted a link to a report on obesity being a bigger killer than smoking in England and Scotland.

Anthea has since insisted it was targeted at people who had made themselves unhealthy, not those who were vulnerable and ill through no choice of their own.

She stressed: “This is not about people clinically ill who need all the help and support we can give them ‐ it’s a Covid wake‐up mo‐ ment we’re all going to have to address.”

Cyclists Protest FIVE THOUSAND cyclists joined a protest in Malaga City on February 14, organised by Ruedas Redondas, calling for a better and safer, system of segragated bicycle lanes in the city.

The situation arose after the Malaga Council had brought in a new by-law on February 1 which stopped cyclists and scooter riders from using the pavements of Malaga, and a system of fines came into operation for any infringements.

Sunday’s protest was nicknamed a ‘bicifestación,’ joining a combination of ‘bici’ (bike) and ‘manifestación’ (demonstration), and organiser, José Luis Marín, said his manifesto has three objectives: to achieve a safe network of segregated cycle lanes, an adequate network of bicycle parking racks, and protection for children and the

Forty-five new traps THE Spanish Traffic Department (DGT) plans to install 45 new speed cameras in the coming months, bringing the number of speed traps in Spain to over 1,400.

The government has said that the speed cameras will mainly be section radars which could be operational before the end of the year.

It was announced last year that surveillance on the roads and radars would increase and more drones would be used.

The Traffic Department has been collecting more than €1 millon per day since 2008 in fines for drivers who violate traffic regulations.

Pandemic Backlog Plan EXTRA staff have been brought in to vehicle inspection points in Malaga Province to deal with the pandemic backlog. In Malaga, the two month closure of the ITV stations caused a backlog of 150,000, plus the lack of staff meant that the usual 16,000 vehicles per week, were not being seen since they reopened.

Despite an extended period of grace, many still have their ITV pending from last year.

If stopped by the Guardia Civil, they could face fines of up to €200 even if they can prove that they have an appointment. This can later be appealed and the money will most likely be returned, but initially the fine will have to be paid.

The 229 inspectors throughout Andalucia, 46 of them in Malaga, are on temporary contracts which could be renewed to continue to help with the situation.

Cavadas Online Puppy Scam is named top Doc False puppies for sale.

FUENGIROLA’S National Police arrested a couple in the town who were allegedly swindling unsuspecting dog-loving customers online by advertising puppies for sale, asking potential buyers for a deposit to be paid in advance, and then once the deposit was in their bank account, cutting all communication.

The couple, a male and a female, aged 33 and 34 were arrested on suspicion of online fraud, and identity theft. The police say that as many as 20 people had been duped into sending a deposit.

The couple are thought to have pocketed up to €9,000 with their scam, targeting victims all over Spain, until the National Police’s cybercrime unit managed to track the couple down.

DOCTOR Pedro Cavadas has been included on Forbes’ list of the 100 doctors in Spain.

Plastic surgeon Pedro Cavadas has come to be known as a ‘miracle doctor’ for some of the work he has done, but this year, he is best known for his predictions regarding the coronavirus pandemic.

He was one of the first doctors in Spain to warn of the extreme danger of Covid-19, even before it arrived in S pain. H e later said that wearing masks would be mandatory at least until the end of 2021.

In October last year, he said that he didn’t believe vaccination would be efficient before two years had passed.

Rider Laws SPAIN’S Labour Ministry, trade unions and business associa‐ tions have agreed to improve the rights of food delivery rid‐ ers to make them permanent staff instead of self‐employed.

This decision to put proper rights in place for the riders was prompted by a decision in the Spanish Supreme Court in September last year, by which a rider employed by Glovo should be considered a mem‐ ber of staff and not self‐em‐ ployed.

The new law, aims to im‐ prove working conditions for the riders who work for com‐ panies such as Deliveroo, Glo‐ vo and Uber Eats, and other services delivering food. It could also be extended to de‐ liveries of other products.

The regulations will still need to be approved in parlia‐ ment and may still need some time for a consensus to be reached.

Although Unions Comi‐ siones Obreras and Union General de Trabajadores, are pleased with this step for‐ ward, Associations of delivery

workers said that their opin‐ ion had not been taken into account. They are unhappy with the proposal as some would prefer to remain self‐ employed, allowing them to decide who they work for and when.

Stonehenge Origins ARCHAEOLOGISTS believe that remains of an ancient stone circle in Wales reveals the true origins of Stonehenge. It is possi‐ ble that Waun Mawn stone circle in Pembrokeshire’s Preseli Hills may have been dismantled and rebuilt ‐ as Stonehenge.

The discovery was made during filming of a BBC documen‐ tary. It is now thought that people migrating from the Preseli re‐ gion dismantled their monuments and took them with them.

This could explain how bluestones from the region made it as far as Stonehenge.

Professor Mike Parker Pearson of University College London, lead for the ‘Stones of Stonehenge’ research project, spoke of the people and the site and said, “It’s as if they just vanished.

Maybe most of the people migrated, taking their stones ‐ their ancestral identities ‐ with them.

“With an estimated 80 bluestones put up on Salisbury Plain at Stonehenge and nearby Bluestonehenge, my guess is that Waun Mawn was not the only stone circle that contributed to Stonehenge.

“Maybe there are more in Preseli waiting to be found. Who knows? Someone will be lucky enough to find them.”

MARBELLA’S Triple A animal shelter has launched a campaign to help cover the costs of the 400 animals it cares for.

Alfonso Sanchez, a former professional basketball player who helps at the shelter, said: “One of the main drawbacks we face is that you cannot predict the number of abandoned animals there will be in a city during a year.” Most abandoned animals also arrive with some illness or injury, requiring medications or treatments to recover, including surgery; in addition to the behavioural problems. THE British Beer and Pub Associ‐ ation (BBPA) has called on Boris Johnson’s government to pro‐ vide the pub and hospitality in‐ dustry with a firm reopening date, as they reveal that beer sales are at their lowest level since the 1920s, with pubs, bars, nightclubs, and restaurants all being forced to shut, in the pro‐ cess losing an estimated £8 bil‐ lion in sales.

Low-Cost Shop ANOTHER supermarket has set its sights on Spain. Russian bud‐ get retailer Mere bosses say the stores will be up to 20 per cent cheaper than the alternative su‐ permarkets, offering everything from food and household goods to clothes and the latest gadgets.

Managing director of Mere in Spain, Andrey Murzov has said that the stores will be “spartan” and “no frills.”

“Everything is stocked on pal‐ lets or in boxes, in order to re‐ duce overheads as much as pos‐ sible and be able to offer very cheap products,” Murzov ex‐ plained.

“This model of store is similar to what Lidl and Aldi used to do years ago. Our aim is to offer the best prices every day, thanks to a business concept that involves saving costs ‐ rent, decoration and personnel.”

The retail giant plans more than 100 stores around the country by 2025. The first branch is due in May, expanding to 10 or 15 by the end of 2021.

Instagram bans Abuse INSTAGRAM has announced new security measures after a re‐ cent spate of racist abuse mes‐ sages aimed at Premier League footballers including Chelsea’s Reece James, and Manchester United players, Axel Tuanzebe, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford.

The content policy manager at Instagram’s parent company Facebook, Fadzai Madzingira, told Britain’s Press Association that she was horrified at the messages, “Currently, we will set a specific ban or what we call a block for a set amount of time when someone violates those rules and we extend that time should they continue to do so.”

She continued, “What we’re announcing today is that we’re taking tougher measures on peo‐ ple who violate those rules in In‐ stagram direct messaging, so in‐ stead of just extending the time, we’ll be removing the accounts al‐ together.” Adding, “That allows us to ensure that we have a lower tolerance for that sort of abuse in direct messaging and we’ll be clos‐ ing those accounts more quickly in Instagram direct messaging than anywhere else on the platform.”

Heroine DNA tested THE descendent family members of Maria Dominguez Remon - a legendary anti-Francoist who became Spain’s first female mayor - are hopeful that a recently discovered body could be that of the murdered Civil War activist.

nalist, anti-fascist, and politician before being executed by Franco’s forces in 1936. Born in northeast Spain, she fled a forced marriage to Barcelona aged 18, where she became a Republican journalist and activist. She later became Spain’s first female mayor in 1932.

In a report by ABC, the president of the Madrid As‐ sociation of Automobile Dealers, Moises Gonzalez, said pedestrians must also avoid endangering their lives and should still only step out into the road when the speed and distance of an approaching vehicle al‐ lows for it to be done safe‐ ly.

If a pedestrian is hit on a pedestrian crossing, despite acting responsibly, the pedestrian is entitled to compensation.

Virgin Changes VIRGIN ATLANTIC: Extending their rebooking horizon for all customers.

VIRGIN ATLANTIC has introduced an unprecedented scheme to allow an unlimited number of date and flight changes as part of changes to its terms offering increased flexibility.

Changes also include an extension of the rebooking horizon for all customers to April 30, 2023. The updated commercial policy enables Virgin Atlantic customers making a new booking for travel up to April 30, 2022, or those with a cancelled flight up until August 31, 2021, to make as many free-of-charge changes as necessary to their travel dates, origin or destination until April 30, 2023, and one free name change.

The changes also apply to customers who already have an open ticket with credit due to flight disruption. Also, the cost of fare difference will be waived if the new travel date takes place on or before May 31, 2021 - a two-month extension on the previous policy.

Virgin Atlantic customers with a pre-existing booking made up to and including February 5, 2021, also have the flexibility to reschedule their travel for a new travel date up to and including April 23, 2023. If their rebooked travel is between June 1, 2021, and December 31, 2022, any fare difference will be waived up to the value of £60 for Economy, £120 for Premium and £350 for Upper.

Experts all agree that leisure travel is likely to have greater resilience over the long term, given the public’s ‘tremendous pent-up demand’ to return to the skies.

IN November 2019, a narco‐submarine, the first to be inter‐ cepted in Europe, was captured off the Galician coast in an an‐ ti‐drug operation. Carrying three tons of cocaine it was manned by three drug traffickers who were detained by in‐ vestigators with four more people later arrested in connection with drug smuggling.

Since 2006, stories about the existence of ‘narco‐sub‐ marines’ were something of a legend for Spanish narcotics of‐ ficers. They had heard of drug‐laden semi‐submersibles mak‐ ing the trip to Spain and Africa. But had never caught one.

Sources at the time said that the submarine was made in Guyana and had been in operation ‘for years.’ It was able to make ‘at least two trips a year,’ until police seized it.

An international tip‐off put investigators on the trail of a submarine carrying 3,000 kilos of cocaine from Colombia to Galicia, a region with a long history of drug‐smuggling activity.

The semi‐submersible, after required refurbishment, will re‐ main in storage at the teaching centre of the National Police in Avila where members of the public are welcome to view the interesting craft.

‘Laughing Gas’ Gang THE National Police has disman‐ tled an international criminal gang who were importing and distributing nitrous oxide, better known as ‘laughing gas,’ for use in private parties and discos in Spain, with four males aged be‐ tween 17 and 28 years of age be‐ ing arrested.

Torremolinos Local Police re‐ ceived calls from members of the public in Benalmadena about ac‐ tivities involving ‘suspicious mer‐ chandise,’ and so ‘Operation Bombona’ was initiated.

The gang was importing cylin‐ ders of the gas in large quantities, and on January 29, officers caught one member of the gang taking delivery of a shipment of cylinders and arrested him.

A search led to the discovery of 200 cylinders in his garage, (around 1,600kg of nitrous ox‐ ide), with 5,000 balloons, 108 nozzles used to fill the balloons with the gas, and 67g of hashish.

Investigations led to a ware‐ house containing cylinders ready for distribution, in Coslada in Madrid, which police traced back to a seller in The Netherlands.

Guardia Civil Arrest 64 THE Guardia Civil have arrested 64 people accused of belonging to a criminal group that distributed marihuana throughout Eu‐ rope.

The group reportedly transported large quantities of marihuana to Germany and Italy and the head of the gang was report‐ edly kidnapped and murdered.

The investigation discovered private homes growing marihuana in the Grana‐ da area and selling crops directly to the leaders of a large gang. The product was taken to a house, guarded 24 hours a day, next to the house of one of the leaders, where the drugs were stored, packaged and sold. During the investiga‐ tion, one of the gang’s leaders disap‐ peared and the following day his body was found.

Police later learned the organisation had basements accessed through hydraulic doors hidden in the floor, to hide the plan‐ tations and marihuana buds, as well as weapons and money.

Police carried out seven searches and confiscated 5,500 plants, €95,675, seven high‐end vehicles, a firearm and ammuni‐ tion, 1,342 lottery tickets and 501 kilograms of marihuana.

Sixty‐four members of the group were arrested.

Facebook Smartwatch NEW DEVICE: Will offer health and fitness features.

FACEBOOK INC is building a smartwatch that will let users send messages and also offer health and fitness features. The social media giant plans to start selling the device next year in a market currently dominated by Apple Inc and Huawei.

Facebook’s smartwatch will work via a 4G or 5G mobile connection, letting users send messages through its services and also connect to the services or hardware of health and fitness companies, according to a report.

And although Facebook has not expressed a strong interest in health and fitness devices in the past, the company does have a track record in wearables with its Oculus headsets and forthcoming smart glasses.

Facebook also acquired the neural interface startup CTRL-Labs in 2019. CTRL-Labs specialised in building devices that could transmit electrical signals from the brain to computing devices without the need for traditional touchscreen or physical button inputs, which may factor into whatever wearables Facebook builds in the future including a smartwatch, smart glasses, or future Oculus headsets.

difficult to accurately forecast likely quarterly results for 2021 until it becomes clear that the pandemic is abating and therefore business can re‐ turn to a semblance of nor‐ mality.

In addition, there is an on‐ going uncertainty of how Brexit will affect the economy which depends upon the speed in which trade agree‐ ments are reached, especially with the European Union where there is still much to be decided.

The general opinion ap‐ pears to be that the British economy will continue to lan‐ guish until spring but will then be likely to see a resurgence, especially if vaccinations con‐ tinue at reasonable speed.

BA flights and sustainable fuel The Freedom Pines facility in Georgia.

BRITISH AIRWAYS is to power future flights with sustainable aviation fuel produced from sustainably‐sourced ethanol, as part of a new partnership with sustainable jet fuel com‐ pany LanzaJet. The partnership, which re‐ flects the importance the air‐ line is placing on sustainability and its continued investment in sustainable aviation fuel, will see British Airways invest in LanzaJet’s first commercial scale Freedom Pines Fuels fa‐ cility in Georgia, USA and ac‐ quire cleaner burning sustain‐ able aviation fuel from the plant.

It expects the fuel to be available to power a number of its flights by the end of 2022. In addition, the partner‐ ship will involve LanzaJet im‐ plementing early‐stage plan‐ ning and design for a potential commercial facility for British Airways in the UK.

The plant in Georgia is due to begin construction this year. It will convert sustain‐ able ethanol (a chemical com‐ pound widely blended with petrol to reduce its carbon in‐ tensity) into sustainable avia‐ tion fuel using a patented chemical process.

The fuel produced at the plant will deliver a reduction of more than 70 per cent in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fos‐ sil jet fuel, equivalent to taking almost 27,000 petrol or diesel cars off the road each year.

Sean Doyle, British Airways’ CEO, said: “Despite the crisis in global aviation, it is vital for our future that we continue to address climate change and we remain focused on playing our part to reduce the impact we have on the planet.

Equality not sought, but retribution LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

SONGS OF PRAISE: Has been a much-loved presentation for many years.

OTHERS THINK IT THIS week I came out in full sympathy with DUP MP Gregory Campbell. I too was offended and indeed angered at last week’s BBC ‘Songs of Praise.’

There was not one white face in the whole programme. This is a much loved presentation that has strived for many years to nurture its religious content in an atmosphere of unbiased love and wonderful diversity; last week it was turned into an all‐black gospel song competition. With three judges sitting in ornate golden chairs, it was akin to a Simon Cowell offering of ‘Britain’s Got Talent.’

Had this been an all‐white presentation there would have been an almighty outcry from the likes of the BLM and woke brigade, and probably noises of displeasure from the church hierarchy for bringing the church into disrepute. Mr Campbell voiced his concerns in much the same way and subsequently was actually asked by the ‘usual suspects’ to apologise for it. He quite correctly refused, citing the

fact that he was telling the truth in that it was a programme with no attempt at diversity whatsoever, and as the whole cast, musicians, singers and judges, were all black was indeed a racially biased presentation. He added that he abhorred

racism in any form, but if we had to apologise for stating the truth, then we had come to a very sorry state indeed. I couldn’t agree more.

If we are to defeat racism it has to be a two‐way street. In fact it has to be a

multiple‐way street. Where are all the Asians, Sikhs, Orientals, Balkans and Orthodox Jews in this overall diversity row? What we appear to be witnessing is a purely black dispute with the white populace. All of it reminds me of SA during

apartheid. The whites hated the blacks and both black and whites hated the Asians, who were derogatorily known as ‘Cape Coloured’s.’

What actually worries me is that the black races will NEVER forgive the white for the past ‐ even though they certainly didn’t have the monopoly on slavery.

Throughout history, untold thousands of whites have also been bought and sold.

The difference is that we’ve stopped blaming it for every misfortune that befalls us and moved on.

I worry that it is not equality that is being sought here but retribution. If we don’t somehow curb the wokers, I have a vision of the white populace one day finding themselves in the same position as many SA whites today ‐ and it’s not pretty!

The Seaford Head School in East Sussex has recently accused Winston Churchill of being ‘a racist who imprisoned and tortured many.’ They have announced that the ‘Houses’ in the school named after Churchill would be renamed. Nelson Mandela House will remain of course.

Divide and conquer MARBELLA MOMENTS

BY NICOLE KING IT’S not a new thing for us to be at odds with one another; we all have an opinion and with everything that’s going on, more than likely a conflictive or polemic one.

Even within my close circle of friends the dis‐ parity of convictions, not opinions, convictions, is actually a bit mind blowing; myself included.

People I’ve known for years have ‘taken sides’ and formulated conclusive and definitive opin‐ ions on so many things; things that when it comes down to it, we could concede, we actu‐ ally know very little about, even though we thought we did. Things are rarely as they seem and are based on how they are presented to us.

An easy example is ‘Brexit’; how many things seemed to be true that have turned out to be incorrect and now we’re learning of more fac‐ tors daily that were not even discussed over the past years; conveniently perhaps?

I only point this out in the hope of us taking a step back to analyse whether sharing these

The same goes for giving an opinion: unless specifically asked for or a life or death situation; better to say nothing. This is perhaps the hardest thing to do; put our egos aside and not have to add our point of view or how we could have done it better.

Like attracts like; so what is it that we really like? Do we actually like putting others down, ridiculing them for having a different opinion, for having an open, or closed, mind? Most ge‐ niuses were those who dared break the mould and stand out from the crowd; following their inner convictions, regardless of the masses.

thing to add; we just need to take more time perhaps to listen to what others have to say; whether we agree or not; it might just strike a chord or bring an opportunity in a way we nev‐ er anticipated.

Undeniably even people with similar back‐ grounds and situations can have very contrary opinions; again Brexit being an obvious exam‐ ple, or whether to wear a mask or not. Even so, whether it is the UK leaving the EEC or greater challenges for society due to the Covid situa‐ tion, we cannot let our differences divide us; we’ll only conquer this together. We are #Bet‐ terTogether.

EXPATS FEEL ABANDONED From our Facebook HAS anyone given a thought to the hundreds of elderly British Citizens / tax payers who are stranded in Europe, and who feel that they have been abandoned and are living under a death sentence with no assistance at all from their home country?

In particular the Costa del Sol, where most of the Brits are extremely frightened Surely the UK government could do something to help them? - considering its proximity to Gibraltar?

The out and out racism on display in his column about China I found highly offensive and I’m not even Chinese!! It is offensive to all Spanish shoppers who like to buy from the Chinese shops we know here in Andalucia. The local middle class in Spain could also have opened these kind of businesses. This Leapy Lee would have written a more valuable article if he had investigated the changed purchasing behaviour of the people since the Covid. Why do internet companies not complain?

New Underhand Practice by Spanish Banks Since Brexit Please warn your readers of a new practice by Spanish banks on UK transfers or UK cheque deposits since January 1, 2021.

Spanish banks are now charging a minimum of €10 per transfer of money from the UK and on Sterling Cheque Deposits even if you send the funds in Euros.

Their pathetic excuse is Brexit, even though they have not changed their systems nor incurred any additional costs than prior to December 2020.

There has been no prior notification of this new charge. They also do not show the charge on your account merely show the amount less the charge.

This is very underhand and does not befit a professional business.

I am a retired Bank Director and was also a Director of a European and International Clearing System (Eurogiro) dealing with among other matters, Money Transmissons Clearing and International Payments.

If we had treated our large corporate and individual clients in this way, we would soon have been out of business and castigated or fined by the Regulators.

Disagree by all means, but do it rationally and with some thought as to the feelings of those you disagree with.

SPANIARDS consume nearly double the recommended dai‐ ly amount of salt.

The World Health Organisa‐ tion (WHO) recommends that adults should consume less than 5g of salt per day, but da‐ ta published by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) indicates

that the Spanish population consumes an average of 9.7g of salt per day.

The report said that 72 per cent of ingested salt comes from processed foods such as sausages, breads, cheeses and ready‐made meals, with many Spaniards not aware of the salt content in the foods they buy.

Experts explain salt can be consumed as ‘visible’ and ‘in‐ visible’ salt. In contrast to the popular belief that salt added during the cooking and season‐ ing of the dishes (‘visible’ salt) constitutes the highest per‐ centage of salt consumption, this represents only 20 per cent.

It is the ‘invisible’ salt, which comes from food, that is the most concern, accounting to

around 80 per cent of total salt consumption.

Salt is essential, but large amounts can have a detrimen‐ tal effect on health if con‐ sumed in excess. For some years now, Spain has joined the National Salt Reduction Plan of the European Union.

This plan includes studies to know the consumption of salt in the Spanish population and the main sources of salt, the application of public aware‐ ness actions and the promo‐ tion of food education in the school.

These initiatives, through the AESAN, are part of a broad‐ er strategic plan such as the Strategy for Nutrition, Physical Activity and Prevention of Obe‐ sity, to help reduce salt intake.

S O M E T I M E S, when I get stressed, anxious or frustrated, I break down. The hard part is, it’s not just from things most people would find stressful. In fact, I deal pretty well with the big things: loss breakups. I know these things are bad and I feel what I would consider ‘normal’ emotions when they happen. Maybe that’s because I know everyone feels them and society accepts those emotions as valid.

My body and my brain can’t tell the difference between a life-or-death situation and a normal, everyday worry. I have the same panicked reaction to misplacing my phone as I might to misplacing my purse.

M y brain and body can go from zero to 100 in two seconds flat. I ’m never truly calm: I might look like it on the outside but beneath the surface, there’s a trigger just waiting to flip and throw me into a full-on panic attack. What makes this even more fun is that I have learned to become anxious about the possibility of becoming anxious.

I ’ve been this way my whole life but I never knew there was a name for it.

When I ‘overreacted’ as a kid, people thought I was just being dramatic. Maybe they thought I just wanted attention and thought crying was the best way

to get it. N othing could be further from the truth. I want nothing more than to be happy. Because, you see, my ‘happy’ is a million times more happy than anyone else’s.

I’ve gotten better at this over the past few years. I’ve become better at voicing what I need, even if I’m far from perfect.

At least now, I can say it’s starting to get bad before I’m ‘there.’ At least now, I can recognise when I can’t handle a single minute more before I’m lying on the floor, pounding my fists into my own body out of frustration and rage.

If I get there, there’s not much I can do but go to a quiet place where I don’t have to see or talk or touch anyone and try to use any number of tools - from medication to breathing exercises - to bring myself back to normal.

If you’re going to be in my life, then you should know about this. But if respecting my different needs or believing me when I say I have a need makes you feel hurt, then it’s better we not be friends.

Intense cycling could help ward off ageing A QUICK, intense, four minutes of cycling could help stop the ageing process.

It could be the news everyone who hates long workouts has been waiting for, as a US study found that short bursts of in‐ tense exercise, such as spinning classes, which are fast cycling classes, can help reverse dam‐ age to cells which decline with age.

High‐intensity interval training, or HIIT training, helps halt the damage to the cells which

start the ageing process.

The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota signed up 72 men and women aged between 18 and 30 and 65 to 80 for HIIT exercises, resis‐ tance training using weights, and combined training with longer bouts of cycling and few‐ er weights sessions.

As well as helping cell ageing, they found that short bursts of exercise improved fitness, cut body fat and can help to prevent diabetes, but it was not so

effective at improving muscle strength which declines with age.

The volunteers with the greatest improvement in revers‐ ing cell damage, carried out four minutes of intensive cycling, fol‐ lowed by three easier minutes, 12 times a week, along with an‐ other 90 minutes walking on a treadmill.

The researchers are using their findings to try and develop a drug that will mimic the effects of exercise in warding off old age.

DAVID WORBOYS ONE morning in 1971, my wife screamed as she tripped over the cat and dropped my porridge on the kitchen floor. Scuttling across the floor, with the cat in hot pursuit, was a mouse. A mouse was a small ro‐ dent, created for the entertainment of cats and vivisectionists. Fifty years later a mouse is a hand‐held pointing device that detects two‐dimensional motion relative to a surface.

And so, I had to forget breakfast as I needed to go to the loo to download (an expression I learned in Australia) before leaving for the office. Today downloading is the transmission of da‐ ta to my computer from a web page or other remote system.

On the way to the station I stopped to buy a mouse‐trap at a hardware store. Nowadays, hardware means computer components that can be physically touched, such as a laptop or keyboard.

During the lunch break I wanted to get an uplifting book about Vlad the Impaler. I went to the library to

Despite the eye pad I could not get

to sleep because my nose was blocked up and I was sweating. I was hoping I had not caught a virus. In these dark times a virus is a program or a piece of code that is loaded into a computer without the owner’s knowledge. It can cause unexpected or damaging ef‐ fects, such as corrupting the system software or destroying data.

A virus is something most unwel‐ come on our planet today.

I noticed, back in October, my monthly bill had gone up a little and kept thinking I must check the bills but I didn’t. But this week I did and, for some reason, my bill had increased by about €3 a line. I have two lines so it’s €6. I called them and got through to the English-speaking section and then tried to explain my query. Why the price increase, what was it for? I was told, “There was a price increase on your tariff.” Why? And this is where the whole English-speaking and English-understanding falls down.

We to-ed and fro-ed a bit longer and I finally gave up because she just didn’t get it and was trying to get me to change my tariff for an even dearer one. Five minutes after that call I got another from them asking what I thought of their service. Not a lot, I can tell you! I then looked on Trust Pilot and they have a 1 star rating. I could not find one good review.

Trouble is apparently all the other companies are the same. Anyone got any recommendations?

I have been trying to track down the people involved with the wrecking of my daughter’s car and am amazed at the protection they have. It’s impossible to find out anything about directors etc or how they got credit card facilities or who places their ads on Google. The data protection stuff seems to give these toe rags all the protection they need. Halifax bank are being their usual unhelpful self, saying that because this, that and the other they won’t refund the payments made and quote some nonsense as to why not. So, once again, the scumbags are fully protected!

HAVING written here about how badly Boris dealt with the pandemic initially compared with his current success with the vaccination roll‐out (unlike the EU), I risk being awarded an OBE. That’s not an Officer of the Most Ex‐ cellent Order of the British Empire (so stop that curtsying at the back!), but the dubious honour of being ‘overtaken by events.’ Writ‐ ing about Covid‐19 carries that risk in spades.

You’ll recall the EU’s much‐criticised row with both the UK and AstraZeneca over vaccine shortages. In particular, it was condemned over its threat to put checks on the Northern Ireland border to prevent vaccines produced in the EU from reaching the UK. This could have been an opportunity to strengthen the EU and help to break down the nationalism that constantly plagues its deci‐ sion‐making process. Instead, it reinforced all these tendencies, hugely embarrassed the EU internationally and robbed it of sorely‐needed credibility for its own citizens.

But the UK is lucky to have AstraZeneca at all. It was nearly sold off with the enthusiastic

How to count the rest‐ ing/ sleeping breathing rate in your pet: Watch the movement of the chest of your pet. One breath is when the chest has moved in and out once. Using a watch or phone to time 30 seconds and count the number of breaths during 30 seconds and multiply it by two to get the number of breaths per minute (60 seconds).

Count the breathing rate a few times over a couple of hours to ensure it is a con‐ sistent finding. If it is con‐ sistently increased, then you should contact your veterinarian.

If you see also other signs such as laboured breathing, restlessness, coughing , gagging, change of usual sleeping position, you may need to go to a veterinary emergency cen‐ tre.

In fact the last Defender still owed much to its immediate post‐war cousin. Of course today the talk is once again all about De‐ fender, but this time in its newest form. Which brings me neatly on to talk about a com‐ pletely different Land Rover!

Land Rover Discovery Sport The Discovery Sport, al‐ though having a trendy, up‐ market image, is in today’s terms reasonably affordable.

Prices for the 2021 model range start at just under €36,486 (£32,000), and if that seems somewhat less than cheap, well I have recently been driving a Toyota RAV4 that’s listed at €40,477 (£35,500).

The other thing that surpris‐

es with the Discovery Sport is a lead‐in model with two‐ wheel‐drive. More SUVs come in two‐wheel‐drive than four nowadays but a two‐wheel‐ drive Land Rover still comes as surprise.

My particular Discovery Sport was an R‐Dynamic S Plus, with four‐wheel‐drive, turbocharged 2.0‐litre petrol engine, mild hybrid electric as‐ sistance and automatic trans‐ mission. The easy way to tell a Sport from a standard Discov‐ ery is not only the size but the Sport doesn’t have that, to some, rather annoying

offset rear number plate.

Priced from €44,416 (£38,955) the Dynamic ver‐ sions represent a good step up from entry level for a relative‐ ly small price increase. Of course by the time you’ve ticked some option boxes the price can climb quicker than a Land Rover up a mountain.

My test model had over €6,800 (£6,000) in options.

That said the standard, al‐ though it is rather more than that, specification is pretty de‐ cent. Privacy glass, power tail‐ gate, powered, heated and dimming door mirrors, pow‐ ered and heated front seats, leather, surround camera, 10” touch screen, navigation, smartphone connectivity and a panoply of safety kit and a myriad of other standard fea‐ tures.

Reliability has to be men‐ tioned as there’s much talk about the lack of it with Land Rovers. While I know people who have had issues, equally I know many that have experi‐ enced no issues whatsoever.

The all‐wheel‐drive of my Discovery was tested in gen‐ uine snowy conditions in which it was, unsurprisingly, highly effective and confi‐ dence inspiring. Inside the Land Rover it’s a very nice

place to be, a mix of modern tech and quality materials.

Good power delivery, smooth gear changes and de‐ cent handling are the hall‐ marks of what is an impressive machine.

SPORT IT has been a disastrous few months in the Premier League for the reigning champions so an es‐ cape out of the country must have been a welcomed change for the side who lost 3‐1 to Leicester at the weekend ‐ a result that has seen the club’s title chances slip away and even calls for manager Jurgen Klopp to step down.
