DISSATISFACTION with the Balearic Government is grow­ ing as was shown by the fact that so many people demon­ strated in Palma on Friday Jan­ uary 22.

Most were restricted to use cars as directed by the Govern­ ment but many more turned up on foot and a new Facebook Group Resistencia Balear has been formed in order to try to direct the protests.

Their latest demands were announced on Saturday saying that rather than simply issue dictates, senior representatives of the Government should meet on a face­to­face basis with members of the public to discuss the Covid­19 restrictions

and explain their plans to sup­ port those in the private sector.

They demanded that this take place within 48 hours, with the meeting being broadcast for all to hear or else the Gov­ ernment should resign and if it takes neither action then an­ other demonstration will take place in Palma next Saturday.

With no direct response from Government, it has been

announced that the demon­ stration will therefore take place on Saturday January 30 from 11am at the Parque del Mar in Palma.

Whilst the organisation is en­ couraging people from all walks of life to complain about the way in which the pandemic is being handled, at least one con­ tributor to the Facebook page is calling for militant action.

Necessary housing Bishop explains INCA Council has come to an arrangement with the Es Gar­ rover Foundation for the transfer of the use of a mu­ nicipally owned home to the not­for­profit organisation.

The purpose of this agree­

ment is to offer residence to people in the town with a mental disorder who are cared for by the Foundation.

From now on, Es Garrover will be able to make use on a temporary basis, free of

charge, the house located on Avinguda de Jaume I as part of its housing support pro­ gramme which is intended to improve personal autonomy and independent living.

The cost of running and keeping the property in good order will be for the account of the Foundation, so there is no financial commitment for the Council.

The Es Garrover Founda­ tion was set up in 2005, to work for the recovery and so­ cial and employment integra­ tion into society of people with mental disorders.

THE Bishop of Mallorca, Sebastià Taltavull, has been criticised for sup­ posedly jumping the queue to have his first anti­Covid­19 vaccination.

This took place at the Sant Pee i Sant Bernat residence in Palma for retired priests and it was alleged that as he was neither a resident nor a health worker there, he should not have been inoculated. He ex­ plained Pope Francis had encouraged all senior clergy to be vaccinat­ ed and after being invited to do this, he agreed. Subsequently the Bishopric indicated he was a regular visitor at the residence.

Design success

A STUDENT from the School of Art and Design of the Balearic Islands (EASDIB), Davinia López Mora has won an award for designing crock­ ery suitable for use by people with just one hand.

The Josep Albert Mestre National Award for Excellence in the Teach­ ing of Fine Arts and Design 2020 was awarded on the basis that her GESTOS collection was unique in design and function. It is considered a solution to eat with one hand using attractive yet functional crockery.

Daily infections down

I T is now two weeks since the Balearic Government increased the level of restrictions in Mallorca and figures suggest that there is a drop in the number of daily infections.

Making it increasingly more difficult for people to socialise or even go shopping has helped the situation but some question whether the cost in financial and mental health terms justifies the means.

Business association PIDEM estimates that average turnover for many businesses is down by as much as 80 per cent and that so many, especially in the hospitality sector, have been so badly damaged that they will never reopen.

The Balearic Government is convinced that getting the pandemic under control is the most vital immediate aim and will review the situation on January 30.

ITV failure

THERE were red faces in the Local Police, when one of its vehicles failed its ITV check due to the poor con­ dition of its tyres.

Not particularly worried, the officer in charge of the vehicle took it to the usual commercial mechanic for new tyres to be fitted and was apparently told that as the Palma Council had such a large outstanding bill, this couldn’t be done.

The Council deny this and have indicated that they have recently made a payment to the company and that they are in the process of finalising a new contract with the compa­ ny.

In the meantime, it has been suggested that tyres from other out of service police vehicles have been swapped in order to get the ITV approved and the police officer back on the road.

NIBS EXTRA ONCE Kiosk ONCE the organisation which runs the lottery for those with visual impairment has installed a new kiosk on Carrer Major in Manacor which is more accessible and has ecological advantages over the old style. A second kiosk will be installed soon.

Motor homes unwelcome LLUCMAJOR Council has placed a number of large rocks at beach side areas in the municipality in order to make it impossible for drivers of motor homes or camper vans to park following complaints from residents that they were illegally camping.

School safety CHILDREN in Santanyi are being invited to enter a competition by taking photographs of how they and their friends go to school safely with attention to either wearing masks or observing the rules of the road.

The winner will receive a bicycle.

Work experience IN an effort to try to assist youngsters aged between 14 and 16, the Alcudia Council is inviting employers to consider offering part time practical work experience in order to try to encourage them not to drop out of school.

Bus lanes ALTHOUGH new lower speed limits are due to be introduced on the Via Cintura in Palma, the Balearic Transport Federation has sent a request to Mallorca Council to delay this until special bus lanes are introduced.

Beware scammers THE Local Police in Consell are warning residents, especially those that are elderly to never allow anyone purporting to represent a gas or electric company into their homes unless they have an appointment and ID as scammers are in the area.

Financial assistance Invasive species THE Marratxi Council has gifted the sum of €4,000 to the Association of Aid to the Companion of the Sick in the Balearic Islands (ADDA) to cover some of its 2020 expenses.

ADDA works to support any patient’s companion in financial difficulty when the patient is sent to a hospital outside of the Islands.

It offers a comprehensive care programme that includes providing information and facilitating the management of money for transfers, for the movement of patients and their companions and, if necessary, for accommodation.

COUNCIL: Gifted funds to ADDA to cover expenses.

ADDA offers applicant families sent by IbSalut to Barcelona access to a fully equipped shared flat near the hospital, at no cost to the people being cared for which is important for the mental well-being of the patient.

THE Palma Council has budgeted €585,718 for the purchase of equipment and uniforms for the Palma Fire Brigade with the most recent arrival being boots.

Sounds straightforward, but there are two types, some for use in forest fires and others for use in urban environments. MANACOR Council has ex­ panded its collection of or­ ganic waste around the mu­ nicipality by installing 32 new brown containers to serve around 1,250 households.

IN 2018, a conman approached a Palma taxi driver’s association offering to provide competitive insurance for local drivers.

A few months later, after supplying an at­ tractive quote, he was paid €3,500 to cover six taxis and handed over what appeared to be legitimate insurance documents.

Later however it became clear that this was a con and there was no insurance, so the six drivers had to approach a genuine company to ensure that they were driving legally.

The individual was charged and a local court, having found him guilty, has imposed a 21­month sentence suspended for two years, fined him €1,080 and required him to refund the full amount paid to him by the drivers.

THE various centres of the Consortium for the Recovery of Wildlife of the Balearic Islands (COFIB) received 253 specimens of exotic animals during 2020.

Of these many are considered invasive species, mostly turtles from Florida; followed by birds, such as parrots and cockatoos as well as rabbits.

One of the functions of the wildlife recovery centres is to take care of animals where people can no longer look after them, but they also receive confiscated animals as well as those that have escaped or been found in the wild.

Mallorca led the way with 194 animals, being 66 turtles from Florida, 31 birds such as parrots, cockatoos, macaws and parakeets, 27 rabbits, nine raptors and others such as ferrets, snakes and lizards.

The COFIB wants to remind pet owners of the impor­ tance of finding out about the legal and maintenance needs of exotic animals before purchasing them, as their possible abandonment or accidental escape into the wild is detrimental to native species.

In addition, most animals that are released into the wild are unable to adapt to the new environment around them, whilst those that adapt are potentially dangerous to local ecosystems, as has been the case in recent years with Flori­ da turtles and raccoons.

Storm damage repairs THE Mallorca Council has now confirmed that it has received a number of applications from councils and individuals for com­ pensation following storm damage last year.

Originally valued at €180,000, a further €1 million has been made available and the most affected councils such as Banyalb­ ufar are able to claim up to €50,000 for three different projects.

Other municipalities in the Serra de Tramuntana area which were not as badly damaged can still claim €50,000 for one pro­ ject and €20,000 for a second.

All of these will be paid for from the larger amount available but from the smaller allocation, 30 individuals and one compa­ ny have claimed up to €5,000 to help repair damage, with the majority of those most affected coming from Banyalbufar.

FIRE Services as well as police and council workers across Mallorca were called in to help clear some of the most dangerous results of the arrival of Storm Hortense last week.

There were gusts of wind up to 120km per hour and the 112 Emer­ gency service revealed that there were some 360 recorded incidents with the majority being in Palma al­ though power was lost in many

Storm Hortense municipalities.

Roads were blocked due to falling trees and buildings lost roofs with falling masonry being quite a danger and vessels that were out of the wa­ ter being worked on also suffered.

Although the storm was expected, the severity was certainly greater than forecast.

Microsoft Phone Scam POLICE in Alicante have arrested two men, aged 47 and 48, for posing as Microsoft technicians in order to swindle cash out of unsuspecting victims. The scammers phoned up their marks and told them there was a virus on their computer or phone and convinced them to download a program to fix it. This program then gave the fraudsters complete access to their victims’ devices, including their bank account.

The two men will be charged with a crime of fraud after swindling €27,000 with the scam.

The operation began after a woman reported that she had been contacted by a technician and was subsequently robbed. It was then picked up by the Alicante Judicial Police.

National Police have issued a warning about an increase in this type of scam throughout the country, and have advised potential victims that Microsoft never make unsolicited calls.

Sanchez asks for Unity PRESIDENT, Pedro Sanchez, has called for national and European unity to overcome the pandemic while pledging to implement the EU’s recovery fund to save the Spanish economy.

Speaking at the ‘European Funds, the Key to Recovery’ fo­ rum in Madrid, Pedro Sanchez said that the continent would need to collaborate in order to successfully recover from the Covid­19 pandemic.

The account now has around 80 videos and 1,800 messages, of which 98 per cent are positive and deal with matters such as fraud, gender violence, road safety, racism, safety, confinement and the use of masks amongst other subjects.

that can be caused by an incorrect use of social media.

They say that the reactions to their content have been very positive, however there has been some controversy, especially one video shared in December where officers were seen dancing to the song Jerusalema.

This video was criticised, when the Professional Guardia Civil Officers Union issued a statement saying that they felt “ashamed” of it. They referred to the union being used to share videos which have “nothing to do with the work of the Guardia Civil” and complained that it was done to “satisfy personal interests instead of portraying the force in a good light.”

Ryanair To Withdraw ‘Jab and Go’ Adverts RYANAIR has agreed to withdraw its ‘jab and go’ campaign after hundreds of complaints were made to the advertising watchdog. The budget carrier is under investigation by the Advertising Standards Authority over the promotion which encouraged potential holiday-

makers to ‘jab and go’ following last month’s rollout of the Covid vaccine.

The Boxing Day promotion reportedly attracted more than 1,500 complaints to the ASA, who are now examining the campaign to see if any rules were breached. The airline said in the ad: “Covid vaccines are coming so book your Easter and summer holidays today with Ryanair.” It added that with a number of destinations on offer, customers “could jab and go.”

The ASA in Ireland (ASAI) ruled last week that the ad should not run in its current format again. The ASAI received 59 complaints about the

Ryanair advert which encouraged consumers to book Easter and summer holiday flights as “vaccines are coming.”

The ASA in the UK, however, has still yet to publish a ruling on the advertising but Ryanair appeared to pre-empt a decision by saying said it “respectfully disagrees” with a ruling by the watchdog, though describing the advert as both “factual and accurate.”

A Ryanair spokesperson said: “The ASA’s ruling flies in the face of the UK’s successful vaccine rollout, however, even though this ruling is baseless, Ryanair will comply with it and the Jab & Go adverts will not run again.”

All residents of Spain are eligible to receive Covid-19 vaccine

VACCINATION against Coronavirus in Spain began on December 27, and at the time of writing, 1,103,301 people had received the first dose and more than 49,000 have re­ ceived the second dose.

If you are wondering whether you will have any problems getting the vaccine in Spain because you’re not Spanish, the an­ swer is no.

The Spanish Ministry of Health made it clear in the Vaccination Plan that there will be no distinction between Spanish citi­ zens and foreigners, and that they will give the jab to everyone living in the country regardless of their legal status.

This includes illegal immigrants, home­ less people and anyone not registered on the Spanish Social Security System and/or without a health card, although it is un­ clear how they will be alerted.

However, it is not likely to include tourists or owners of holiday homes in Spain.

The government has also made it very clear that the vaccine will be FREE, and there will not be priority for people with

private health insurance.

The government has stressed that peo­ ple should wait to be contacted by the Health Authorities of the region in which they reside.

It is as yet unclear how people will be alerted that their time has arrived to re­ ceive the vaccine and where they need to go to get it, but to make sure you are in the system, ensure that you are on the padron (the local population census at your town hall), that your documents are updated with your current address and that your local health centre has you on their register. You will also most likely be asked to provide proof of identity and resi­ dence when you are given the vaccine.

The only group that is unlikely to be vac­ cinated against Covid­19 in Spain are chil­ dren.

A register will be kept of people who are called to get the vaccine but do not wish to do so.

The regional health authorities will be updating information periodically and we will publish more details as we have them.

FFP3 masks most effective protection

FFP3: Most effective.

THE Head of the Health Alerts and Emergencies Coordination Centre, Fernando Simon, has said this week that the most effective mask for selfprotection against Covid-19 is the FFP3.

Simon, an epidemiologist, explained that the FFP3 mask is the most effective to pro-

tect oneself, while the FFP2 mask is slightly less effective.

The FFP3 mask is an Individual Protection System with a filter efficiency of 98 per cent to protect the person wearing it and those around them as long as it doesn’t have a valve.

Despite this, the traditional surgical mask is still slightly more effective in preventing people who have the virus from transmitting it to others, as they are designed to filter exhaled air.

Meanwhile, the FFP3, FFP2 (92 per cent efficient) and FFP1 (78 per cent efficient) are more effective at filter inhaled air.

He added that hygienic masks have a similar efficiency to the others.

FFP3 masks are designed for a single four to eight hours use, like the FFP2 and FFP1 masks.

They can be purchased in pharmacies, specialised shops and large shops, at a price of between €3 and €5. Meanwhile, a pack of 50 surgical masks generally costs around €10.

Biden Reverses Trump Transgender Ban DONALD TRUMP’S controversial ban on transgender people serving in the military has been overturned by President Joe Biden. The president signed the executive order on Monday January 25 and stated “all Americans who are qualified to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States should be able to serve.

“This is reinstating a position that previous commanders as well as the secretaries have supported and what I’m doing is letting all qualified Americans serve the country in uniform.”

He also commented that “Transgender personnel, if qualified in every other way, can serve their government in the United States military.”

The order was signed by the president as he met with Lloyd Austin, the new Defence Secretary, before Austin’s official swearing-in. The military also showed their support for the reversal of the order as the Chairman of the Joint Chief of THE Residential Care Unit of the Parc Taulí Hospital in Sabadell (Barcelona) has launched a WhatsApp account for communication between families and elderly patients.

Administrators for Debenhams, the FRP Advi­ sory, had a few days ago allegedly said they were talking with ‘third parties

regarding the sale of all or parts of the business,’ but apparently, neither compa­ ny would comment on that.

The flagship 242­year­ old Debenhams store on London’s Oxford Street started the liquidation process back in December 2020 after a potential take­over rescue deal fell through, although Deben­ hams itself had been in administration since April of last year, allegedly hav­ ing already been in finan­ cial difficulty long before the pandemic.

Honorary Appointment SPAIN’S queen, Queen Letizia, has accepted an honorary ap­ pointment from a religious brotherhood in Torre del Mar, Malaga.

The royal was recognised as ‘camarera mayor honoraria’ by the Hermanadad de la Virgen del Carmen in the Axarquia town.

The position was ratified in a letter sent to the brotherhood by the queen’s secretary, Jose Manuel Zuluera. The appoint­ ment had previously been sug­ gested at a general meeting of the Hermanadad in October 2019, before being sent to the royal palace for its approval in January 2020.

Make sensory health a priority in 2021 SPECSAVERS advises health-focused resolutions for the New Year.

With many of us pledging to focus more on our health and well-being in the New Year, Specsavers Ópticas is urging people to make their eye health a top priority.

Martin Blake, store director at the Specsavers Ópticas Santa Ponsa store, said: “There is a genuine concern that some people may have a symptom-free condition that has gone undetected because they failed to attend a pre-booked sight test.

“We estimate that approximately 7,500 Specsavers Ópticas customers forewent their sight test last year due to lockdown restrictions. Our stores remain open for appointments, with a series of hygiene and personal protection measures in place to ensure a safe and reassuring experience. We would urge those who have not seen an optician in more than two years to book an appointment as a matter of urgency.”

Stores across Spain have seen a spike of enquiries from customers seeking help for tired, strained eyes caused by extended hours in front of computer and phone screens. In fact, Specsavers research showed that 33 percent of people noticed their eyesight deteriorate during the first lockdown, which is indicative of the increased time people are spending on their computers while working from home and binging box sets in the absence of other entertainment options.

“A great New Year’s resolution we can all make in 2021 is keeping check of our screen time stats,” said Martin. “Most phones have a feature to let

you review your screen time use, allowing you to take action if you are going above your usual average.

“If you can’t help but be on screens for a large amount of your day, try the 20-6-20 rule, taking a break from screens every 20 minutes to look at something six metres away for 20 seconds.”

4 things Brexit has changed for UK nationals in Spain What does the post-Brexit landscape look like for UK nationals who live or enjoy spending time in Spain? Here are 4 key things that changed on 1 January.

1. UK nationals are ‘third country’ nationals by default When the transition period ended, UK nationals lost the freedom to study, work and live in the EU. Fortunately, Britons who can prove they were legally settled in Spain in 2020 can maintain citizens’ rights protections under the Withdrawal Agreement.

This provides the right to come and go in Spain, with broadly the same access to benefits as citizens for as long as you remain resident here.

However, these rights will only apply to Spain. To unlock the freedom to live and work in any EU country, you need to become a full Spanish citizen (possible after ten years’ residence).

2. Non-EU residents can

Calculating your allowance is not so simple. As the time is treated as a rolling period, you need to count 180 days backwards from arrival and track your stay to ensure you will not exceed 90 days at any point. When planning trips to Europe, you therefore need to take extra care to avoid illegally overstaying or being denied entry.

John Lewis Partnership THE John Lewis Partnership has announced the early re­ payment of the £300 million (€330 million) HM Treasury and Bank of England Covid Corporate Financing Facility which was due for repay­ ment on March 15.

Despite the problems of the last year when John Lewis stores were closed for several months, the Partner­ ship believes it has sufficient liquidity going forward.

Trading during the peak months which included Black Friday and the Christ­ mas period, held up better than anticipated and as a re­ sult, they expect full­year profits to be ahead of expec­ tation.

Trappist beer available

Trappist Westvleteren ready for shipping.

FOR years, beers brewed by Trappist Monks of the Bene­ dictine order have been con­ sidered some of the best in the world, but sales have been hit by the pandemic.

The monks of the Sint­Six­ tus abbey in Westvleteren in Belgium are to start deliver­ ing their beer although it is rationed to a crate of 24 bot­ tles for any one order.

It is only 18 months ago that they went online but still required customers to regis­ ter, place an order and collect their beer by car at appointed times having first confirmed their car registration number.

Then because of the lock­ down, the monks, who have the motto ‘brew to live, not live to brew’ had to suspend sales for several months.

Now they are back brewing sufficient to cover the needs

of the monastery and are also allowing collection again on the same terms although those who come to the monastery grounds, will be allowed 48 bottles.

There are just 14 monaster­ ies allowed to brew and sell Trappist beers, six in Belgium, two in the Netherlands and one each in Austria, Italy, the UK, France, Spain and the United States.

Although not as well­ known as the Chimay monastery which brews beer and sells cheese, the Trappist Westvleteren brew has achieved an aura of quality around its three different styles of beer, one blonde and two dark.

Museo El Prado

T H E world-famous Prado Museum in Madrid has planned an enormous overhaul in 2021 which will see more works by women displayed in order to create a “more inclusive” Prado, according to the museum’s director, Miguel Falomir.

In all, collections from 18th century Europe, the Goya collection and paintings from the 19th century will be subject to a complete revamp.

The increase in more

works by women will be confined to the 19th century section and it’s understood that many will be new acquisitions, although officials haven’t released specific information yet.

Over the years the museum has made a big effort to display more work by women, including its current exhibition, Guests; however, many feminist groups have criticised the Prado for not going far enough to celebrate female artists.

BBC Line Up Jason Manford JASON MANFORD has morphed from a very funny standup comedian, into an all-round entertainer, with acting roles in TV sitcoms ‘Scarborough’ and ‘Benidorm’, through to theatre stage work in ‘Sweeney Todd’ and ‘The Producers’, onto a daytime quiz, ‘First And Last’ on BBC1.

Feel free to speak freely LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT QUITE frankly, I believe the new Netflix series of Bridgerton is a long way from the lighthearted ‘bit of fun’ the makers and actors would have us believe. This grossly inaccurate ‘historical’ piece, sets yet another precedent of dangerous appeasement which now seems to have no bounds in its relentless erosion of British history and its heritage.

In this series, set in the Regency period, many of the main characters are depicted as black aristocracy. Even the Queen Charlotte is portrayed by black actress Golda Rosheuvel.

To me the whole presentation is misleading and offensive. With the exception perhaps of Dido Elizabeth Bell, who was the daughter of a British naval officer and a Caribbean slave, (and is herself the subject of a new historically correct movie to be released later this year) there were no black members of British aristocracy at that time, or even any other historical period, unless you

count the occasional Moor in the Tudor era. It’s all very well for those responsible to shrug it off as ‘a bit of fun’ or ‘we were all simply having a laugh,’ they fail to take into account that to many of today’s youngsters, movies and presentations of this ilk are the nearest they get to learning anything at all about the culture and heritage of the country they live in.

You simply cannot trust the woke and left wing influenced teachers that abound in the British education system, to teach its ever increasing ethnic pupil base the true historical past of the UK. They are too busy being ‘ashamed’ and trying to erase or airbrush the more dubious actions of our ancestors, instead of proudly teaching of the magnificent achievements and constructive input they have given to the world. Don’t take my word for it.

Leicester University has just announced they are planning to decolonise their English language studies by shelving works of English literature that they consider ‘too white’! Chaucer and his important works of Canterbury Tales and Beowulf are among the first to

go. You really do wonder where it is all going to end. Briefly returning to the casting of the farcical Bridgerton, can you imagine the furor and protests that would have ensued should they have cast a white woman in the role of Whitney Houston? Or Benedict Cumberbatch as Mandela? Ludicrous?

No more than casting a black woman as the Queen of England! Once again, I’m fully prepared for the accusations of racism I am bound to receive for this piece.

The irony is that I am so utterly against racism, I cannot help but speak out when I see it, this evil doctrine constantly practised under the guise of the so­called diversity and equality which is utterly destroying the heritage of a once great country; and in doing so not only biting the hand that feeds it, but positively gnawing on it.

YOU may not realise, but if you own a cat then your home probably smells like it. Unfortunately it can be dif­ ficult for us to discern smells when we live in the same environment. When it comes to life with a cat, it can be smelly, but it doesn’t have to be!

JANUARY’S got a lot to answer for, hasn’t it? Christmas is over, it’s cold and dark outside (at least in the UK) and we’re still in the middle of a global pandemic. With New Year resolutions already foundering, we’re then hit by Blue Monday, reckoned to be the most depressing day of the year, and it’s a long time till spring!

To this list, add self­help books. I gave up on these years ago when I found they all said the same thing. A waste of money.

Most people can work it all out for themselves.

One fact that can’t be ignored, though, is that levels of stress, de­ pression and anxiety among parents,

carers and many others have in­ creased with the pressures of the lockdowns. Issues like difficulty re­ laxing, feeling hopeless and angry.

Many parents, especially those of secondary­age students, say they’re worried about their children’s fu­ ture, blaming contributory factors like prolonged screen time, disrup­ tion to daily routine, lack of exercise, stress of exams and frequent argu­ ments.

A few tips? If you find yourself in an argument, the chances are your opponent isn’t actually angry with you personally.

You are just collateral damage.

And in that moment you are the em­ bodiment of their elderly parent’s missing second Covid jab or another three months of home­schooling.
