MALAGA­BASED FCDO em­ ployee, Michelle Stewart, is among four UK nationals in Spain named in the New Year Honours List.

Michelle Stewart, opera­ tions manager of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Develop­ ment Office’s consular contact centre, has been awarded an MBE for services to British na­ tionals overseas in the New Year Honours List, published today, Thursday December 31, 2020.

Michelle joined the FCDO in Malaga as a team leader in the consular contact centre, fol­ lowing a career in the tourism sector and a brief period work­ ing at the Euro Weekly News.

We would like to congratulate her on receiving her award.

This service answers calls from British nationals around

the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and allows con­ sular teams to focus on those that need the most help.

Michelle manages a team of over 100 remote workers, with over 16 foreign languages to support, and helps them to of­ fer vital assistance to British nationals overseas, who are of­ ten in very challenging situa­ tions.

Crucially, the changes Michelle has made to the man­ agement of the consular con­ tact centre have allowed more people to be helped, more quickly and to a higher stan­ dard of service.

This was particularly evident during the first wave of the Covid pandemic, where from the first calls from Wuhan up until the repatriation of British nationals, call volumes in­

However, she is not ready to completely retire just yet and as the Covid pandemic developed she became more worried about businesses struggling in the Mijas and Fuengirola areas, so she set up a Facebook group called Simply Surviving Group aimed at supporting such businesses.

The Simply Surviving Group is a non-profit operation. There are no joining fees, no subscriptions and it is a very simple idea kept simple.

FUENGIROLA comes above the national average in respect of health and well-being, according to the recently published report ‘The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in 100 Spanish municipalities.’

It was prepared by the Spanish Network for Sustainable Development, using data from the National Institute

Praise for lifestyle of Statistics (INE) and the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) for its conclusions.

The objective of the work is to study, in an investigative and objective way, the degree of compliance with these SDGs in 103 municipalities of Spain, where 21.5 mil-

lion (about 50 per cent of the Spanish population) live.

According to this document, Fuengirola is a Spanish municipality that best meets the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations, and exceeds the national average.

Traditional Nativity Scene IN order to maintain security measures against Covid­19, the traditional animated Nativity Scene (Belen) in Torre­ molinos will be displayed behind the window of a former shop so that social distance can be maintained.

On view until January 6, the large display which has many working parts is displayed in the window of the former Springfield clothing shop situated in the Avenida Palma de Mallorca rather than in the usual place.

Feral cat colonies THE Benalmadena councillor for the Environment, Joaquín Villazón, has signed a collaboration agreement with the Benalmadena Animal Group (GAB) for the control of the feral cat colonies in the municipality.

“With this agreement we want to improve the welfare of these animals on public streets, reduce their health problems with birth control through sterilisation, and reduce inconvenience to residents as it establishes feeding protocols to avoid unsanitary conditions,” explained councillor for Health, Juan Carrillo.

The head of the technical section of Health in the Environment, María Belén Muñoz, added that “through this collaboration agreement, we will sterilise the cats that live on streets, so that in a short time we will reduce their population and those that remain will be healthy animals that live in good conditions in appropriate locations, with protocols for correct feeding with dry feed, to avoid the attraction of other species like rodents and birds.”

This year, the dimensions of the scene are somewhat smaller than in previous years so that it could fit in the new location and have better visibility from the street. In addition, the Nativity Scene has been created with chil­ dren in mind and is lower so that it is comfortable for all to view.

Another benefit of the location is that it is in the centre of the town with plenty of shops nearby.

THANK YOU: The visit to La Fonda.

THE mayor of Benalmadena, Victor Navas together with councillor colleagues met with students and staff of the La Fonda de Benalmade­ na SAE Hospitality Training School to thank them for preparing 84 meals for distri­ bution to families in need.

This neighbourly initiative was the idea of the 35 stu­ dents and the staff of the school who paid for the food and prepared the meals in the school kitchens so that they could be distributed in suitable vacuum­packed con­ tainers ideal for storage until Christmas Day.

Their ‘solidarity menu’ pre­ pared by the La Fonda stu­ dents consisted of a monk­ fish and shellfish soup, roast beef tenderloin cooked in its own juice with vegetables and sauce, a Swiss roll with candied fruits for dessert as well as a selection of Christ­ mas delicacies.

The food was prepared and packaged in such a way that it only had to be heated on arrival and its distribution to the neediest families was arranged by the Council’s So­ cial Service Department using Benalmadena Civil Protection volunteers.

Recycling campaign THE Mijas Council has installed special containers to receive used glass as part of a Costa del Sol campaign for recycling. One council can win €2,000 if residents vote for the campaign and if Mijas wins it will donate the money to Dementia charities.

2020 was definitely the unplanned year for us all.

It has been a difficult year with illness loss uncertainty and isolation due to Covid19.

However it has been the year where communities have come together like never before - people have reached out to help others less fortunate as we have all learned to live in the moment or the NOW as it has been called.

We have all learned that it is the little things that are actually the BIG things that matter - our health - a roof over our head food in our stomach.

We have in the main all learned to appreciate everyone and everything as that is what makes up our landscape of life.

Red Cross appeal THE Mijas Youth Red Cross volunteers received a donation of toys from the El Corte Inglés Em­ ployee Group (GECI) based at the Costa Mijas Shopping Centre.

The donation has been made possible thanks to the creation by the launch from the GECI So­ cial Action Area, nation­ wide, of the Campaign ‘Your toy, your illusion.

Donate a toy,’ through which the workforce has donated new toys.

They will be used in the Red Cross campaign ‘Their Rights at Play’ for the children of families at risk of social exclusion in the Mijas municipality and users of the different social projects of Mijas Council.

THE next beach clean­up organised by the Mi Moana Group will take place on Saturday January 16 from noon until 4pm at Max Beach on the Mi­ jas Costa.

This is a special event as there will be a spon­ sored swim to raise funds for the Collective Call­ ing charity, diving with friend of Mi Moana, Nic to clear some of the rubbish in the waters plus a yo­ ga session at Max Beach itself.

This beach event is being organised in collabo­ ration with the Mijas Council, Collective Calling, Diving with Nic, Senge Dorje Yoga and Ecocean­ Green Solution.

THE Fundación CLC World (Mijas) is once again collaborating with Los Án­ geles Malagueños de la Noche to help pay for their Christmas Solidarity Menus Campaign.

Juan Miguel Marcos, president of the Foundation, visited the Los Ángeles facilities and presented them with a cheque for the cost of 2,000 tortillas to be distributed as part of the campaign.

President of Los Ángeles, Antonio Meléndez, expressed his gratitude to the Foundation for all the help received and said “There are many people on the streets who do not have enough money to put food on the table once they have paid all their bills.”

The Solidarity Menu was served on Christmas Eve, alongside sweets and basic food and hygiene products.

Rotary Club Mijas LAST week members of the Rotary Club delivered food to the Food Bank Fuengirola, making total donations of more than €2,000 over the last few months.

Since its inception in 2017 the Rotary Club Mijas International has focused on the local community of Mijas and Fuengirola, in particular assisting the homeless and un­ derprivileged people in the area, with regular donations to institutions such as the Foodbank and Adintre.

On January 6 the Rotary Club’s Annual Homeless Day Project takes place, as mem­ bers hand deliver over 50 care bags containing food and other supplies to the home­ less people of Mijas and Fuengirola. Christmas meals

MARBELLA mayor, Ánge­ les Muñoz visited one of the distribution points to view the special meals produced for more than 1,000 people of families in financial difficulty which were prepared by local restaurants on Christmas Eve. She thanked the groups and individuals who with their generosi­ ty have supported this initiative of the city coun­ cil, as well as the collabo­ rating companies for their support.

The mayor said “Our priority, since the begin­ ning of the health crisis, has been to respond to the most vulnerable groups,” and added “all of our residents can en­ joy a special meal, de­ spite the difficult situa­ tion in which we find ourselves.” More than 14 different groups were in­ volved in putting this op­ eration together includ­ ing local associations, Rotary Club and Red Cross with support from local residents who helped to pay for much of the food.

Acts of kindness BBC interview EWN YOU may all remember that in Oc­ tober Euro Weekly News held a spooktacular Halloween party where we invited all of our read­ ers, friends, and residents to help us celebrate and raise funds for the orphaned children at the Ciu­ dad de Los Niños in Malaga.

The evening was a fangtastic success and through the help of our amazing local commu­ nity, we smashed our €8,280 target by reach­ ing a total of €10,016 to be donated to the vul­ nerable children.

With the funds raised, we were able to buy some much needed gifts for the youngsters such as 29 new mattresses, a €100 clothing

WE are very sad to report the death of Gina Foster in the UK last week.

Over the years many would have known Gina, or come in to contact with her, as she had lived in Benalmadena for many years.

In 1985 she was a key member of the expat group that founded the Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuen­ girola.

Gina played an active part in the community in many ways, always there offering to help anyone who needed it. She was known locally as Lady Gina.

She was President of the Salon Varietes Theatre, also president of

voucher each, Christmas hampers which included gifts and toiletry bags with aftershave and a t­shirt and jacket each.

To say the children were grateful is an understatement, but it showed that simple acts of kindness can make a huge difference in some­

one’s life.

EWN has now received a lovely letter of thanks from the orphanage offering their most sincere gratitude for the gifts and the help that our Euro Weekly community has given them.

We feel this is such an amazing gesture that we should share it with all of our loyal sup­ porters who helped this deserving cause.

Loss of Lady Gina FOTA which is the fundraising arm of the theatre, she held garden parties to raise theatre funds at her amazing home on Rancho Domingo, often with the likes of Barbara Windsor, Mike Read and her very close friend Danny la Rue in attendance.

In later years she was the coor­ dinator for Age Care Association, holding coffee morning gatherings in Benalmadena village each week, helping those in need.

Two years ago she be­ come unwell and living alone here she needed help herself, so Gina re­ turned to the UK. She had cancer, but she was a fighter and returned to support the Friends of the The­ atre’s summer and winter balls, even though extremely unwell.

Gina will be cremated in the UK, with her ashes returned to her beloved Spain. The Theatre will hold a memorial gathering at the Theatre (date to be agreed).

IN view of Brexit having finally come into action, last Friday Jan­ uary 31, BBC News Europe re­ porter Gavin Lee spoke to Euro Weekly News’ very own Michel Euesden.

Euro Weekly News is the lead­ ing free British newspaper pub­ lished in Spain, and has SIX re­ gional editions and a circulation of over 580,600 copies every month.

Michel Euesden is the CEO and founder of Euro Weekly News, and works hand­in­hand with her husband Steven Euesden who is joint publisher and sales director.

Gavin met up with Michel in Mijas Pueblo and said that the general feeling he got from the local British, as quoted by a local bar owner, was that “Nothing is different, but everything has changed.”

Michel agreed she had a similar feeling, as we are yet to see what Brexit really holds for us. Euro Weekly readers are mostly ‘remainers.’

People who are proud to be British, but have chosen to reside in a different country.

For now, the British in Spain have been told that they can con­ tinue as they have been, but by December 31 they will need to make sure that all their paper­ work including residency must be

in order should they want to live and work here.

Despite Brexit not having been everyone’s first choice, many are happy to at least be out of ‘lim­ bo,’ after three years of uncer­ tainty. Gavin said having spoken to local estate agents, there ap­ pears to have been a recent de­ cline in British buyers. This is most likely due to people not knowing what the future would hold.

Euro Weekly News has also spoken to other channels, and one of them will be doing a post­ Brexit documentary which will follow the Euesdens, as well as some of their clients along the coasts of Spain. This documen­ tary will be all about ‘Life as an Expat after Brexit.’

They will be following up to see what changes have been made or felt one, six and 12 months after the initial Brexit date of January 31, 2020.

HERO

MOST readers will now have heard of Captain Tom Moore, a 99­year­ old army veteran who has raised over £28 million (at the time of going to print) to help the NHS in the fight against Covid­19 by completing laps of his Bedfordshire garden walking with the aid of a frame.

The veteran, who served in the Second World War, initially set out to raise £1,000 by chal­ lenging himself to walk 100 times around his Bedfordshire garden before his 100th birthday on April 30.

He finished his final four laps last Thursday morning and has now vowed to keep on walking as long as donations keep coming in.

NHS Charities Together, which will benefit from the funds, said it was “truly inspired and hum­ bled.”

More than a million donors have contributed to his JustGiv­

ing page since it was set up.

Mr Moore began raising funds to thank the “magnificent” NHS staff who helped him with treat­ ment for cancer and a broken hip.

Prince William and the Duchess of Cornwall have now both written and donated an undisclosed figure to the JustGiv­ ing appeal.

In a video filmed from his home, the future king said: “He’s a one­man fundraising machine and god knows what the final to­ tal will be, but good on him, I hope he keeps going.”

It’s not just his walking that has caught people’s attention, Cap­ tain Moore’s NHS charity single, a rendition of the classic ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ with Michael Ball has hit number one in the UK Pop iTunes Charts.

All proceeds will go to the walk fund, which has captivated Britain.

Food fairies Princess of the people’s paper The lifeline of the community THE Food Fairies have continued to work day and night feeding families from Duquesa to Malaga and accrued an army of 27 members.

Newest recruits Jacky Baverstock and Chris from The Harbour Marbella joined as delivery drivers at different ends of the coast taking some pressure off the girls.

The group have been receiving an amazing amount of food donations, however, dozens of new cases of families needing help come along daily with the hundreds they already have.

Kara Jaye Caradas is extremely thankful for all the donations they have received and said: “The wonderful chaps at Calahonda’s Gemini 51 Masonic Lodge showed just what a real bunch of Fairies they really are when they organised a donation of €250 worth of fresh cuts of meat for distribution to our grateful families.”

She went on to say that “Restaurante El Banco has been simply amazing with their constant donations of beautifully cooked meals along with collecting dozens

2020 of packages through Lolly Clayton and trolleys of other produce to help fill the boxes.”

The Fairies had drop off points all along the coast and would like to thank: 8 till late in la Cala Hills, Global Radio (El Oceano) and El Gusto Restaurant in La Cala de Mijas.

They had trolleys for collection at Iceland in Puerto Banus and Fuengirola every day, but unfortunately the team are hanging up their wings tomorrow, May 8 to return to their families and jobs.

IN last week’s issue we named your local heroes and Euro Weekly News was so happy to pass on your words of praise in thanking them for a job well done.

We also had one winner of a special recognition award who has just blown us away with everything she has done and con­ tinues to do for the community, Kara Caradas.

EWN was able to plan a little secret awards ceremony for Kara in Mijas, last Wednesday. Joining her in the celebration were mem­ bers of her family including her sis­ ter Penny Quinlan and her hus­ band Marc, EWN General Manager Nicki Burgess and own­ ers Michel and Steven Euesden.

On receiving her award Kara said “Thank you so, so, so much to everyone who voted for me in the Euro Weekly News, I feel very humbled so many silver linings have come from Covid­19. I can’t thank the public enough for all the sup­ port. I am so proud of our com­ munity for coming together and

making it all possible and Euro Weekly News for the constant support to make sure we could keep going. It was a team effort.”

Kara hit the headlines with her Food Fairies, a group consisting of Kara’s sisters, family, Pippa Jones, Jackie Quick Rice and others who collected and delivered food to families in need.

Tom Moore Knighted BRITAIN’S favourite fundraising hero got a dream come true when the Queen knighted him during a private ceremony at Windsor Castle on Friday July 17.

The ex­serviceman who is a Second World War veteran earned himself the highest honour by raising around £33 million in aid of the NHS as it struggled to cope with the constant battering of the Covid pandemic.

Sir Tom challenged himself to walk 100 lengths of his Bed­ fordshire garden before his special 100th birthday this year, an achievement leading to the PM Boris Johnson minis­ ter nominating him for the award.

Her Majesty, 94, has been liv­ ing in Windsor during the pan­ demic for her own safety, but bravely chose to carry out the official engagement in person.

She thanked Sir Tom person­ ally, saying: “Thank you so much, an amazing amount of money you raised.” Leading up

to the event, Sir Tom posted a tweet saying that he was “rar­ ing to go,” for a “very special day” and thanked supporters for their well wishes.

“To actually see the Queen in person ­ this is a step in the right direction, a step hopefully back to new normality, but it will be a very slow step,” Sir Tom added.

Mijas Donkeys MUCH has been written about the plight of the Mijas donkeys over the years with not a huge amount being achieved, but Mijas councillor Bill Anderson has reported on his Council Work Facebook page that there seems to be breakthrough.

He visited Mijas Pueblo and met up with Katy Darlow who created the Mijas Donkey Movement Project, a not for profit organisation which is dedi­ cated to checking the general health and welfare of the 69 donkeys there.

She had obtained agreement from the donkey owners to bring an equine veterinarian to check on

their health and it appears that having exam­ ined the first 30 they seem to be in a reasonably good condition and the vet will be giving advice on how to further enhance their conditions.

The councillor reported that the owners ap­ peared happy to cooperate and indicated that they would consider implementing any recommenda­ tions that may be made.

Project Costa - reaching out to those less fortunate DID you realise during the Covid­19 lockdown that you don’t need so much ‘stuff’?

If so, there is a fantastic project on the Costa Blanca that could make an incredible difference with your cast­offs. The objective of Pro­ ject Costa, a non­religious and non­ profit organisation, is to dress and feed the less fortunate on the Costa Blanca, as well as offering a rehabili­ tation programme for up to three people at a time in a half way home they are refurbishing in Benitachell.

The team want to get alcoholics and drug addicts off the streets and back into society.

Baby steps is the name of the game, founder Arne Soeten told Eu­ ro Weekly News, acknowledging that while they ­ Arne, Matty, Steve, Inge and Caroline ­ have a dream to help those in need, it will take time and support.

“We are renting the property in Benitachell and are currently clean­ ing and painting it to make it a halfway home and a soup kitchen.

“We are starting from scratch, pumping a lot of our own money and time into this project,” said

“We want to start by feeding the homeless, giving out clothes and sleeping bags. As we get to know them, we will be able to see who wants a second chance at life and we will help them get back into soci­ ety.

“If we can help one person achieve that, then the project is a success for me.”

Matty added: “We have both been in that situation. We are not the only ones out there who want to change their lives. They need someone to reach out a hand.”

The initial goal is to start handing

out food and clothing twice a week.

The next goal is to select three suitable candidates to work on their life situation today.

“We want to offer a free 90 days rehabilitation programme. Our goal is to guide the underprivileged with­ in this time back to society,” said Arne.

To get the ball rolling, Arne and the team parked their beloved yel­ low Project ‘Tweety’ van at Javea Port on Sunday morning to take do­ nations.

“It was amazing,” Arne told EWN. “Around 30 people came with clean clothes and new under­ wear and we also had donation. It was a great success, thank you to everyone.”

Project Costa also need to kit out a professional soup kitchen includ­ ing kitchen tools, chopping boards, catering pots and pans and a large horizontal freezer.

Queens Honours TOURISM Safety Campaigner Georgia Hague and volunteer Ian Warren are among three UK nationals in Spain named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Georgia Hague, who campaigns to promote safer youth tourism, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the British community in the Balearics and Ian Warren, who has brought the Red Arrows to Menorca four times, has been awarded a British Empire medal (BEM) for services to the British Community in Menorca, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, published on Friday October 9, 2020.

Following a tragic fall which killed one of her friends, Georgia instigated a safety awareness campaign aimed at young British tourists visiting the Balearics.

Georgia worked closely with the British Embassy in Madrid and Consulate in Palma to become a key spokesperson for the FCO’s ‘Stick with your Mates’ campaign, sharing her personal experience in a video that reached almost a million people on Facebook.

HMA Hugh Elliott said: “It is wonderful to see someone as young as Georgia being recognised for the work they do in the community. Channelling her personal grief into helping to save the lives of others, she has managed to reach millions of young people through social media - communicating a message of personal safety in a way that was both compelling and relatable. Her work has made a real difference.”

He also put his fundraising and project management skills to use in support of the work of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and annual Poppy Service in the Anglican Church in Menorca.

HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Ian is truly a force of nature. He never seeks publicity for himself, but is ever-present in the life of the British community on the island, selflessly devoting his free time for the benefit of others.”

Ian said: “I am very humbled and most honoured to be awarded the British Empire Medal from her Majesty. My journey has taken me in many directions, none of which would have been achieved without the help of many friends.”

100 songs in 100 days IT was 18 years ago that self­professed golf hustler Alan Green from London via South Africa arrived in Estepona and has been here ever since, writing a book and betting on golf statistics and at 74 he has cre­ ated something of a new stir.

During the lockdown and after he decided to entertain himself and followers by recording on YouTube a different song and ended up singing 100 songs over 100 days, which one of his supporters has told Euro Weekly News should be counted as a world record.

He wasn’t daunted by the difficulty of some of the songs with Bohemian Rhapsody being one of his choices which included Rap, Rock, Sinatra and a number of amusingly performed ABBA songs.

The charity event raised a fantastic €3,762.00 for peo­ ple in need in the Elviria community struggling due to the Covid­19 pandemic. Each Tuesday Caritas Marbella provides food shopping to help homeless and strug­ gling families registered with the charity and collections are made each week be­ tween 6.30 and 7.30pm. The money raised from this event alone will provide six weeks of shopping for those in need.

The six­course menu which cost €55 per person with 50 per cent of the menu price going to charity was a huge success.

Children Will Be Visited Via Video Call MIJAS Town Hall has launched an innovative new project to bring the traditional Christmas ‘Three Wise Men’ visits to the town’s children using video calls.

Due to Covid­19 stopping the usual festivities, the mayor of Mi­ jas Josele Gonzalez said it was “fundamental to work on initia­ tives to make the youngest chil­ dren and their families more ex­ cited” for Christmas after a difficult year.

The mayor said he has man­ aged to ‘contact their majesties to be able to bring the Christmas spirit to as many homes as possi­ ble in a totally safe way.’ He added that the plans were a re­ ward for the ‘exemplary behav­ iour’ of the town’s children this year, when they were forced in­ to lockdown with the rest of the country.

Your only recourse is to catch the owners in person when they visit their properties. The problem with democ­ racy is the amount of effort involved to make it work.

WITH the so­called Google Tax due to be introduced in Spain in April of 2021 de­ spite threats of further tar­ iff increases of Spanish goods into the USA, some social media companies are already settling previous year’s debts so that they don’t get penalised with higher future taxes.

The most recent example is Facebook Spain which following a formal inspec­ tion of its books by the Spanish Tax Agency has agreed to pay €34.4 million back tax to cover 2013 ­ 2018 but this is a tiny amount when compared to 2019 turnover in Spain of more than €260 million.

What to do with the ashes?

ONCE a deceased loved one is cremated, there are many different options for what to do with the ashes. Some people choose to bury them in a cemetery, keep them at home in an urn or even turn them into beautiful pieces of cremation jewellery or memorial art.

Others decide, whether at the request of the deceased or due to personal reasons, to scatter the cremated remains somewhere. Along with the choice to scatter, however, comes a whole new set of decisions to be made. In particular, where those remains should be disbursed?

For this reason, why not consider a pre­planned and pre­paid funeral plan?

Then you can make all these decisions yourself and take the strain off your loved ones when the time comes.

The choice to be cremated is a really important part of your funeral plan; we spoke with Emma who is a funeral plan expert from Golden Leaves who shared with us some of the most common places and also some new unique ideas for you to include in your plan, after all it should be you who gets to choose where your remains will spend the rest of eternity.

1. Private Property Many folks choose to keep the cremains of their loved one close to them by scattering their ashes on their own private property, like in the garden or around a nearby tree. If you choose to have your ashes scattered on private land that belongs to someone else, however, such as in a field or on a farm, be sure to obtain the landowner’s permission in advance of the ceremony. Another thing to keep in mind when scattering on private property is whether your family will have the right to visit that property in the future.

2. Water Another popular way to scatter cremation ashes is to do so across a body of water, such as a river, stream, lake or ocean. Public bodies of water don’t typically require a licence or any special permissions to scatter cremated remains, however, you should be careful not to do so near an extraction point, or where people fish or swim. (Your local environmental agency should be able to help with this.) Keep in mind, also, that loca­ tions on or near the water can be windy, so be sure to check the conditions beforehand.

3. Mountains/Hilltops Hilltops and mountains can provide a beauti­ ful setting in which to say goodbye. One thing to consider, however, is how ashes can im­ pact plant life. While cremains are non­tox­ ic, it’s still advisable to avoid scattering ash­ es where plant ecosystems are more fragile, such as on mountain peaks. Popular climbing areas can also make it difficult to find privacy.

And, like bodies of water, mountains and hill­ tops can be windy, so keep this in mind when planning your ceremony.

4. Scatter Gardens Typically located at a cemetery or crematorium, scatter gar­ dens provide a lovely place for your remains to spend eternity and a serene location for family and friends to visit after. These are areas designated specifically for the scattering of cremated remains. Every facility is different, but some offer additional ways to honour the deceased, including plaques, statues or plants, so that may also be an option.

5. Sporting Venues If you’re an avid sports fan, you may wish to request that the scattering ceremony be held at your favourite stadium, complex or arena. Whether or not this is an option will ultimately depend on the specific policy of the facility in question. Your funeral director may be able to assist you in approaching the venue’s owner to ask permission.

One important thing to point out when it comes to scattering ashes is that there are certain rules and regulations surrounding the process. For instance, some locations re­ quire that advanced permission be granted, paperwork be completed and sometimes even licences be obtained. Others may simply request notification in advance.

It’s wise to check your local laws prior to making plans to avoid any unexpected and unpleasant surprises.

Happy New Year to all LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AS we groggily stagger to the end of a year that will go down as one of the most turbulent and life altering epochs in the planet’s history, I can think of only one expression that sums up what most of us must actually feel ­ utterly punch­drunk.

It truly is like coming to the end of a brawl with Mike Tyson. I would like to predict, that now we have all effectively sunk to the canvas ­ the only way is up.

Well, I think that remains to be seen.

Boris’s apparent success in finally sealing a deal with Europe, will, no doubt, still have to go a few more rounds before it is fully accepted by the disgruntled remainers, who will inevitably use every last word of the 1,200 page agreement to gain political points or secure their own future careers.

(Keep an eye out for Nicola Sturgeon and her ‘new referendum’ plans in particular).

Plenty of blows still to come for a Prime Minister, who some consider to be

something of a buffoon. Well whatever they think, this man is still standing solidly in our corner, after experiencing one of the worst economic and public health disasters of all time.

He also became a new parent and survived an illness that put him in intensive care. Through all of this he still managed to achieve the Brexit he promised at his election. Well I personally think to have survived this particular rumble in the political jungle and come out with most of his teeth places him very much shoulder to shoulder with any number of our historic political champions.

The vindictive autocrats of the EU who scoffed and humiliated Theresa May have finally had an opponent step in to their pretentious ring who was more than a worthy match for their self­opinionated personas.

Well done Boris, but don’t drop your guard; you soon need to get back in training to defend the title challengers, who are no doubt lining up to take you on.

Personally I think you’re well up for it.

This week’s announcement by the

creators of Oxford Covid vaccine revealing, among other weak excuses, that they ‘made a mistake’ and their preparation was actually ‘far more efficient than was originally thought’ absolutely reeks of political conspiracy.

Some weeks ago, this British version which, because it could be stored at normal temperatures, appeared to be a superior product, was unexpectedly announced as only being 74 per cent effective, thereby allowing the Giant Pfizer Company to jump the gun and be the first distributor of its own ‘superior’ product and subsequently receive the inevitable billions in profits.

Now, after the Pfizer Company has reaped the main harvest, the British vaccine is discovered to be ‘more efficient than originally thought?’ Give us a break.

What sort of banana boat do these money manipulators actually think we came over on!? Personally I think it merits a public enquiry. Some chance! Happy New Year.

They don’t even see a doc­ tor. They don’t even call a doctor.”

Later Trump called the coronavirus a ‘horrible infection,’ radically altering his public stance on the pandemic. A day

Trump was prominent, too, in spread­ ing the false idea that vaccines cause autism, but then changed his tune, urg­ ing people ‘to get the shots.’ Would an embittered Trump, eager to spite his suc­ cessor and win attention for his future media or political career, become a prominent ‘anti­vaxxer’ campaigner again? To ask the question is to answer it.

Additionally, there are all his unfound­ ed conspiracy theories about voting fraud, claiming Mr Biden’s win in Arizona was ‘impossible,’ the results in Nevada ‘fake’ and ‘We won Michigan bigly!’

Have we heard the last of Trump? No. Is the world a safer (and saner) place now he’s (almost) gone? Absolutely. Am I glad? Yes? Am I still talking to myself?

Stop looking at me like that ­ it’s been a long year! So, let’s leave it at this: Happy New Year!

BY NICOLE KING MANY can’t wait to see the back of this year, but I still can’t believe we’ve come to the end of it. The days and months seem to have melted into just one long pause. I think many of us feel like that, even if we don’t own a business, have travel plans or a wedding; nothing can be de­ fined and there is no clear path ahead of us.

This New Year is unlike any other in my lifetime. Curfews, military rule in many aspects and a resounding reminder

that my civil liberties are only as valid as the proce­ dures permit.

Many of us had never appreciated how easy our lives had been until now, simply because we had no comparable. Personally I’m grateful for having had the chance to revaluate my priori­ ties.

It couldn’t be clearer that with my family, a few good friends, a roof over my head and food on the table that I am one of the lucky few.

This year many people have shown their true colours in the face of adversity and al­ beit a few unpleasant surpris­ es, most have not just risen to the occasion but surpassed all

expectations.

Times are tough and only going to get tougher.

Ev e r y d a y p e o p l e n o l o n g e r have everyday lives and won’t know how to ask for help or know they deserve it; it’s up to the rest of us to be more aware and ready to read be­ tween the lines.

We often look at others and feel that their lives are easy but I, like many, have had peo­ ple help me along the way and I’m truly grateful to them (you know who you are).

There’s no shame in needing help or asking for a helping hand. We don’t have to prove anything by going it alone.

This goes for our children too. Another teen has just re­

cently taken his life in our community and although not widely publicised, cannot be ignored. Desperation defies logic and nothing is making sense right now.

Usually at this time of year we’re thinking of our New Year’s resolutions. This year many are just resolved to making it through to 2021.

Even so, we have to take the glass half full philosophy and find that silver lining.

If you can’t find it or don’t k n o w w h e r e t o l o o k , P L EA S E ask for help from others if you feel alone or overwhelmed; there are so many people ready to chat, defend, any­ thing!!

All our lives are worth living

to the maximum.

Go for a walk to lengthen your life JUST a brief, brisk walk, can add years to your life.

Experts say that 15 minutes of daily exercise is enough for older adults to see big benefits to their health with this activity being linked to a 22 per cent lower risk of an early death.

Researchers carried out a study on two groups of people to see if lower levels of exercise could be as beneficial as the rec­ ommended 150 minutes each week. One group of 1,011 French people aged 65 in 2001, were followed over a period of 12 years while the second, an in­ ternational group, of 122,417 people aged 60, was followed over 10 years. Participants’ activ­ ity was measured in Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) min­ utes each week, assessing the amount of calories used per minute of physical activity.

The recommended levels of

exercise equate to between 500 and 1,000 MET minutes every week. Researchers found that the risk of death fell as the level of exercise increased and com­ pared to those people who were inactive, older adults with low, medium and high activity levels had a 22 per cent, 28 and 35 per cent lower risk of death, respec­ tively, showing that even smaller amounts of exercise can boost life expectancy and improve health
