EXTEND OR LIFT

ANDALUCIAN President Juan­ ma Moreno will decide whether to ‘extend, make more flexible or tighten’ re­ strictions across the region on Sunday, November 22.

Juanma Moreno will preside over the meeting in which the evolution of the pandemic will be analysed and it will be decid­ ed what step to take next.

The restrictions, that came into force on November 10, were originally supposed to run out or be ‘reinforced’ on Tues­ day, November 24.

The Minister of the Presiden­ cy, Public Administration and the Interior, Elías Bendodo, at the press conference after the weekly meeting of the Govern­ ing Council, warned that if the curve of contagions, hospital admissions and ICU admissions is not reduced “we will have to continue taking measures, whatever is necessary.”

This year alone, the Junta has made significant funds available to allow for the opening of the Estepona Hospital, the work to start again on the badly needed

San Pedro Health Centre and most recently the allocation of €75 million to allow for the ex­ tension and upgrading of the Costa del Sol Hospital in Mar­ bella.

Approval of the Junta’s 2021 budget could have been blocked by the Socialist and Green opposition and had to be accepted by Vox in order for it to go through smoothly.

If for any reason, the budget had been overthrown, then nu­ merous projects benefiting mu­ nicipalities across the area would have been put in doubt as would necessary economic support for many who have suffered financial hardship due to the Covid­19 pandemic.

Regardless of politics, if the region is to recover and regen­ erate, it needs its politicians to be seen to be cooperating to a great extent with the aim of getting hotels open again and tourists flocking back with the hospitality industry receiving support from both local coun­ cils and equally importantly from the Junta itself.

Now the spotlight will return to Juanma Moreno as he and his executive decide on Sunday whether the curfew and other restrictions will be lifted, ex­ tended or allowed to continue.

New kit for Local Police NERJA Council has approved the replacement of Local Police uniforms and equipment.

Security councillor, Francisco Enrique Arce, said “for many years the replacement of deteriorated clothing and material hasn’t been carried out, and the comprehensive renewal of the uniformity and se­ curity accessories of the Local Police is required.”

The move will mean new uniforms, clothing acces­

sories, workwear accessories, footwear, helmets, vests and personal protection covers.

“The Local Government Board has approved the specifications for contracting the supply of uniforms, accessories and personal protective vests for the Ner­ ja Local Police. The contract will be for two years and will be awarded through an open procedure, accord­ ing to various award criteria.”

NEW KIT: Uniforms, helmets and footwear will be renewed.

‘Greenland operation’ POLICE have arrested 26 people in connection with the cultiva­ tion of marihuana in the Ante­ quera region.

As part of the ‘Greenland Op­ eration’ officers recovered more than 1,600 marihuana plants and 33 kilos of ‘buds’ prepared for sale.

The 26 detainees and two others under investigation are accused of crimes against public health, belonging to a criminal organisation, money laundering and fraud.

PLANTATIONS: Police recovered more than 1,600 marihuana plants.

The suspects are believed to be part of five criminal organisa­ tions involved in the cultivation and manufacture of drugs in the

Antequera region, which owned numerous plantations inside homes, in orchards and outdoor farms.

Bag snatch A KIOSK worker was injured after being thrown to the ground by a bag thief who made off with her €1,300 takings at 7.30am on Monday, November 16, in Malaga City’s Avenida Santiago Ramon y Cajal. The victim suffered injuries to her cheekbone and arm and needed medical assistance.

Help for Brits A FREE advisory session for Brits living in Motril will be held at the Intercultural Centre on Friday, November 20. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is offering one-day free legal advice on issues like residency registration. The free session will take place from 10am and 2pm.

Caught out THREE poachers have been arrested for killing a mountain goat in a private hunting area without the permission of the landowner. Police caught the trio in action in Churriana on November 12, and discovered a modified 357 Magnum caliber S&W revolver, which is strictly prohibited for use in hunting.

VELEZ­MALAGA Council has launched a photographic competition to promote healthy life habits among the town’s young people.

The initiative is aimed at 12 to 18­year­olds who are invited to submit pictures related to ‘healthy habits’ before December 1.

Exchange your Driving Licence WITH the countdown to Brexit creeping in, one of the key ac­ tions for UK Nationals living in Spain is to exchange your UK dri­ ving licence for a Spanish one, but recently a lack of appoint­ ments has made this difficult.

To speed up the licence exchange and ensure UK Nationals can begin the process before the end of the year, the DGT has put a new system in place which is now live on their website.

It is a two­step process. The first step is to make an appli­ cation to the DGT before December 30. You can do this via their online portal if you have a digital certificate/CLAVE or

Irrespective of whether a UK licence has been verified for ex­ change by the end of the year, you will be able to drive in Spain using your UK licence for six months from January, 1, 2021.

It’s Movember THE entire Torre del Mar Playas Running Club will grow a mous­ tache in support of the Movember movement.

The Movember campaign (moustache/November) aims to raise awareness about the importance of the fight against male diseases such as prostate and testicular cancer.

The Covid pandemic has meant activities and events planned by the running club during November have been suspended.

But the club wants to continue spreading the important message and is calling on all athletes in the Axarquia region to take part by publishing a photograph of themselves with their ‘moustache’ and the tag #MovemberPlayasdeTorredelMar on their social networks.

Prostate cancer claims 22,000 victims every year in Spain, but the mortality can be reduced by 90 per cent if an early diagnosis is made.

Club president Rafael Sánchez told Axarquia Plus that it is “vitally important to demonstrate to men the importance of taking care of themselves and of carrying out periodic check­ups to prevent and combat diseases such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer.”

POLICE in Rincon de la Victoria broke up an illegal gathering of more than 100 young people near the Cueva del Tesoro on Sunday night, November 15.

Councillor for Citizen Security, Borja Ortiz, said: “The young people mostly minors, did not comply with the Covid­ 19 prevention regulations, without a safe distance or a mask, were drinking alcohol, and some were even carrying narcotic substances.”

Fire forces closure TORROX restaurant owners are ‘heartbroken’ after an electrical fire gutted the premises on Sunday, November 15, forcing them to close for the fore­ seeable future.

Katie Louise, who runs the Grill House & Sunset Lounge with partner Dave McQueen shared the tragic news on Facebook, posting photographs of the damaged restaurant.

“As if things were not hard enough at the mo­ ment... tonight this happened. We are heartbro­ ken,” said Katie.

“Two hours after posting ‘appreciate what you have’ we had an electrical fire in the restaurant, myself and Kodi are absolutely devastated. Due to the amount of damage we will be closed for the foreseeable future.

“Please support us and our team in these hard and uncertain times, after so much hard work we are both heartbroken and devastated.”

Thankfully nobody was hurt in the fire.

Diabetes Day THE Plaza Al Andalus fountain and Rincon de la Victoria Town Hall were illuminated in blue at the weekend to mark International Diabetes Day. The council, in collabora­ tion with the International Di­ abetes Federation, the Span­ ish Diabetes Federation and the Sueño Dulce Association, marked the occasion on Sat­ urday, November 14, with a manifesto to raise awareness about the disease, and the consequences for sufferers, their families and caregivers.

Councillor Elena Aguilar said: “Despite being a degen­ erative and chronic disease, proper control and healthy lifestyle habits can help delay or prevent chronic complica­ tions of diabetes.”

According to figures provid­ ed by the Spanish Diabetes Federation, 469 million adults (one in 11) were living with di­ abetes in 2019 , and it is ex­ pected to increase to 578 mil­ lion by 2030.

“It is essential to face this problem from a preventive perspective through the im­ plementation of public health policies aimed at preventing obesity and sedentary lifestyle, promoting active lifestyles and healthy dietary habits in society in general, but placing special emphasis on children,” added Aguilar.

Bright spark AN electrician has been arrested for cutting a former client’s elec­ tricity supply, causing €6,400 worth of damage, over ‘unpaid work.’

According to the National Po­ lice, the 34­year­old Spaniard accessed the homeowner’s me­ ter from the roadside in Malaga City, and cut the wiring causing significant damage to the al­ leged victim’s garage door, electrical appliances and other gadgets.

Sources said the electrician claims he was owed money for unpaid work and deliberately set out to sabotage the former client’s electricity supply.

AN Italian judge has sentenced the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pay bonuses pending since 1999 to an employee of the Spanish Embassy in Rome.

The extra payments, included in Italian legis­ lation, amount to around €30,000, plus legal costs of €4,000.

Union CSIF considers that the sentence sets a very important precedent in the defence of personnel working abroad.

It is the first conviction of a Social Court against the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Italy for failing to comply with local work legislation.

The ruling recognises the rights of an em­ ployee with more than 21 years service, who has had his case supported by the Spanish jus­ tice system on several occasions.

The Italian Justice system also recognises the employee’s right to receive the bonus in its entirety in subsequent years without having to go to court again to claim it.

CSIF has denounced the ‘disproportionate’ amount spent by the Ministry on legal advice which they claim far exceeds the amount owed to the employee.

Fines for holding phone Founder of Hays Travel Dies THE Guardia Civil may be able to fine drivers for having a mobile phone in their hand even if they are not using it.

The General Traffic Depart­ ment has reported that the pre­ liminary draft of a new traffic

law contemplates that holding the phone while driving a vehi­ cle could lead to a fine.

The new law, approved by the Council of Ministers, but still to go through parliament, is worrying Spanish drivers. Fol­

lowing the announcement that drivers will no longer be able to exceed the maximum limit on conventional roads by 20km/h to overtake, it is now known that simply holding the phone, if seen on the numerous traffic cameras which are placed on roads throughout Spain, could lead to drivers to lose six points off their licence, that’s double the current fine. It is hoped that the measures will lead to fewer people getting distracted at the wheel.

The new law is not likely to come into effect until the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.

CADAQUES, in Girona, has been elected the most beautiful coastal town in Spain by followers of the Lonely Planet Instagram profile.

This is the latest of several surveys, and after choosing Potes in Cantabria, as the most beautiful inland town, the attention moved to the coast.

Almost 60,000 of the 100,000 followers on Instagram have taken part in the survey, which has been carried out in eliminatory

rounds. The final saw Cadaques up against Cudillero in Asturias, and the third and fourth positions went to Lastres (Asturias) and Calella Palafrugell (Girona).

Cadaques, on the Costa Brava, is located in the north of the area of Alt Emporda and was a source of inspiration for Salvador Dali.

While it has become a popular destination, it is still quiet and not yet altered by mass tourism.

Spain school dropouts SPAIN continues to be the EU country with the highest num­ ber of school dropouts, despite an improvement in the past decade.

The rate of abandonment of studies and professional train­ ing is 17.3 per cent, which is seven per cent higher than the European average of 10.2 per cent, according to the Euro­ pean Committee’s Education and Training Report.

The rate has gone down steadily over the past 10 years, but the study concludes that the national objective of get­ ting it down to 15 per cent, seems “unattainable”.

The report shows significant differences between regions.

Galicia, Madrid, La Rioja and Valencia have reduced the per­ centage of school abandon­ ment, while it has gone up in Cantabria, Cataluña and Navar­ ra. It also reveals that there are more boys dropping out of school prematurely (21.4 per cent) than girls (13 per cent).

The only country which comes close to Spain in the number of dropouts is Malta with 17.2 per cent, followed by Rumania (15.3 per cent). Those with the best rates are Lithua­ nia (4 per cent) and Greece (4.1 per cent).

Last chance pesetas

THE countdown is on to get rid of any old peseta notes and coins you may have lying around the house.

According to the Bank of Spain, at the end of September this year, almost €1.6 billion worth of pesetas were still unaccounted for and had not been handed in. If you were living in Spain before the euro came into circulation in 2002, it may be worth checking if you have any, as not only can you still return them to the Bank of Spain, some notes and coins are worth up to €20,000 to collectors. However, December 31 this year is the final deadline for returning them to the Bank of Spain.

This seems to have encouraged people to finally get the currency changed, as in the first week of November, €792,043 worth was exchanged, compared to the weekly average previously of just €170,000.

No Rescue Reptiles rescued evidence from of fraud Ravine THREE 12-year-old girls, and a father who tried to help them, have been rescued from a ravine in the Lleida municipality of Sort, Catalonia, on Saturday, November 14.

Firemen of the Generalitat were called to the scene around 7pm after being alerted to their difficult situation in the hard to access area in Montardit del Baix.

Thankfully for the three 12-year-old girls, and the man himself, he was able to notify the emergency services who sent two units of firefighters to the area, one of them from the G R A E special rescue group, who rescued the four.

They all escaped unharmed but were a little shaken up.

A TOTAL of 300 rare and pro­ tected reptiles worth around €800,000 on the black market have been rescued by the Guardia Civil in a pan­European and Europol operation with 21 people from two criminal groups arrested.

There continues to be a huge market for protected wildlife across the world even though the international CITES agree­ ment restricts the capture and transportation of many differ­ ent species.

The traffickers had a number

of different ways of bypassing the law, with ‘mules’ transport­ ing eggs across borders which were hatched and then used for breeding or use of fake doc­ umentation (supplied by ‘tame’ vets) which allowed the reptiles to be imported into Spain.

Incredibly, amongst the rep­ tiles found was a Giant Tortoise (an endangered species found only on the Galapagos and the Seychelles Islands of Aldabra and Fregate) which has a lifes­ pan of up to 200 years.

Drug pay back time AN Essex builder jailed for drug trafficking has been ordered to hand over £1.2 million of assets J Warner, 49, from Canvey Island, was given a confiscation order totalling £1,220,192 at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, November 9. Warner was warned he would serve up to a further seven years in prison if he failed to pay the full sum within three months, and would still be liable for the money.

Officers from the Organised Crime Partnership - a joint National Crime Agency and Metropolitan Police Service unit - arrested Warner in October 2018 for supplying multiple kilos of cocaine, cannabis and amphetamines across London and Essex.

He later pleaded guilty to four counts of conspiracy to supply controlled drugs and three counts of money laundering, and was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison in June 2019.

THE US presidential poll was the most secure ever, says a statement released by cybersecurity experts, in the clearest repudiation yet of Donald Trump’s claims. A coalition of US federal and state officials have said they have found no evidence at all that votes were compromised or altered in last week’s presidential election, rejecting unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud cited by Donald Trump and many of his supporters.

The statement from cybersecurity experts, which ‘trumpeted’ the November 3 election as the most secure in American history, amounted to the most direct repudiation to date of the outgoing president’s efforts to undermine the integrity of the contest.

It echoed repeated assertions by election experts and state officials over the last week that the election unfolded smoothly and without irregularities.

Striking “Vulgar” campaign A CAMPAIGN against gender violence has caused contro­ versy and divided the public.

The PSPV council has placed posters on posts around the town which have been slammed as ‘vulgar, vulgar and a total lack of respect for women.’

“I wish I were a vampire so you could stake me,” and “I’d like to be a referee so you can blow your d**k out,” are two of the slogans used in the ur­ ban cultural awareness cam­ paign to mark International Day for the Elimination of Vio­ lence Against Women on No­ vember 25.

The objective of the initia­ tive, which has not yet been presented, explained the local

authority, ‘is to achieve a bold and very striking campaign, with an aggressive touch to make people think about a very pejorative use of language towards women.’

The intention was to place

the posters on Sunday, Novem­ ber 15 and leave them, ‘with­ out any explanation’ for several days.

The town is now waiting for an official presentation of the campaign to be made.

Catalonia 4 Phase Reopening CATALONIA is planning a four­phase reopening of restric­ tions, hoping to start from Monday November 23.

Alba Vergés, Regional Minister of Health, has spoken about the phased plans to reopen Catalonia. The plan will see a three or four­phase gradual reopening, with each phase lasting 15 days.

The phases will not see an immediate return to all activity and there may be no change to the current curfew. Vergés wants to balance the social needs of the people against the economic needs. The Coronavirus pandemic is being careful­ ly monitored in Spain and restrictions are being changed in an ongoing manner to best curb the virus.

School Covid Stats Living OVER 6,200 classrooms are in quaran­ tine and 27 centres have been closed in Spain due to Covid, according to da­ ta published on Wednesday, Novem­ ber 11.

According to information from 18 autonomous communities and cities shared by the Ministry of Education and Professional Training, these 27 centres account for 0.09 per cent of the total that teaches as part of the general regime; while the classrooms and groups affected represent 1.5 per cent of the total, so it is estimated that 98.5 per cent of the groups are func­ tioning normally.

Store Closures WH SMITH is set to close 25 high street stores which means the British retailer will have to start cutting nearly 200 jobs.

It was reported on Thursday, No­ vember 12, that the company has strug­ gled to survive the pandemic in the UK which has led to a pre­tax loss of £280 million (€313 mil­ lion).

Sadly, it now means a loss of jobs and the closure of UK high street stores, mainly small­ er outlets, after the chain saw business fall 19 per cent.

In contrast, sales through the retail­ er’s main website soared by more than 240 per cent.

Botched restoration

THE botched restoration of a sculpture in Palencia, has once again put Spain in the press for its less than perfect art work, and experts don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

The 20th century sculpture, on one of the city’s most em­ blematic and visited buildings, which houses the central office of Unicaja, has become the lat­ est example of a questionable restoration job, and having gone unnoticed until now, has re­ ceived many complaints.

The building, in Calle Mayor, was opened in 1923 and has reli­ gious images on the outside.

The face of what was a smil­ ing shepherdess has now be­ come a popular image to take a picture of, and it is the brunt of THE Interior Ministry has been sentenced to pay €137,000 to a family in Almeria who were in­ formed 27 years later of their son’s death.

The man, who was 24 at the time he was reported missing in December 1990, had in fact died in a car crash. His family was not informed of this until June 2017.

sons database and the unknown victims database handled by the different police services.

They admitted that this had caused a 27­year delay in identify­ ing the man’s body and letting his family know he was deceased.

YouTube crash

AT around 7pm ET, November 11, YouTube crashed around the world and users were left baffled as thousands of videos seemed to disappear in front of their eyes, while others simply wouldn’t load.

An outage map on Down Detector displayed the outage throughout the world. In addition, The Verge reported that YouTube TV and Google TV were also out of commission during this time.

YouTube tweeted immediately that they were aware of the problem and trying to fix it, saying: “If you’re having trouble watching videos on YouTube right now, you’re not alone ­ our team is aware of the issue and working on a fix. We’ll follow up here with any updates.” A couple of hours later, however, the issue appeared to have been resolved, with YouTube tweeting that the disruption had been fixed across all devices and YouTube services.

UK’s travel corridor expands EIGHT destinations have been added to the UK’s travel corridor list while Greece, apart from five islands, has been removed. Cleaning routines will be followed rigorously to ensure that the resort is safe for customers and staff alike. Season pass holders can be confident that there is also a refund plan in place if resorts close due to Covid­19 related issues.

THE Spanish government has capped the maximum price of surgical masks for sale to the public, meaning they will cost a maximum of 72 cents each.

The aim is to ensure everyone can afford the compulsory Covid protec­ tion. The price, including IVA, will be reviewed as often as the market price surveillance requires. In April, the Interministerial Commission for the Prices of Medicines (CIPM), a collegiate body of the Ministry of Health, agreed on a maximum price of 96 cents. The commission set this price after reviewing the current market prices of surgical masks in Spain, both in large stores, as well as in pharmacy offices and online sales.

flights to resume JET2 will resume flights to the Spanish islands on Thursday, December 3.

Some good news at last for holidaymakers af­ ter a turbulent summer, with airlines forced to ground a huge number of flights due to coronavirus restrictions.

Jet2 has announced on their official Facebook page, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, that they will resume flights to var­ ious airports in Spain from December 3 this year. Airports which Jet2 will be servicing from next month include Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria. The airline has confirmed that flights to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma will resume on February 11 next year. In addition to the Spanish flights, Jet2 will also resume flights to Antalya, Turkey in De­ cember.

Jet2 has advised that any updates regarding other destinations will be announced on their page as soon as the informa­ tion becomes available.

Crypto Scammer Caught A CRYPTOCURRENCY scammer has been arrest­ ed in Tenerife following an investigation into a Ponzi­type scam that saw €378,750 stolen, af­ fecting at least 26 people.

National Police and Guardia Civil officers have arrested the chief executive of a company based in the Canary Islands that, allegedly, was defrauding people through investments in cryp­

tocurrencies using a Ponzi­type scam.

Officers also raided four company offices, lo­ cated in the towns of Adeje, Arona and Cande­ laria, where they have seized three high­end ve­ hicles, abundant documentation and electronic devices, as well as, numerous bank accounts in the name of the investigated persons, which have now been blocked.

Graffiti artists under arrest POLICE arrested 99 graffiti artists over €22 million worth of damage caused to trains and stations.

The investigation was launched in September after 6,741 complaints were filed

by RENFE Operadora and Metro Barcelona between 2017 and 2019.

THOUSANDS of flamingos have arrived at Doñana National Park in Huelva to spend the winter.

They are amongst several species of aquatic birds, which travel to the Doñana Marshes, part of the Guadalquivir River, from all over Spain and north­ ern Europe, when the colder weather arrives.

Seeing their arrival and the sea of pink feathers is consid­ ered amongst birdwatchers to

be one of the most beautiful sights of the year.

The area is one of the largest bird reservations in Europe, and over the past few days, some 70,000 flamingos have arrived and can now be seen there searching for food.

They will stay until the spring or even the summer, when they will then leave the space avail­ able to other species of birds.

Finally Arrested A MAN with 10 outstanding arrest warrants for various crimes of fraud and forgery has finally been caught and arrested in Alicante.

In an investigation that lasted six months, National Police officers were able to track down and arrest a 44­year­old man who was wanted on some serious charges, including causing harm to others.

Officers of the Provincial Police of Alicante became aware of a person who was wanted by the Spanish authorities and had been evading jus­ tice and avoiding arrest. The man used false documentation and moved houses up to three times, using mirrors from the windows of the house to detect any police presence, before officers were finally able to arrest him after requesting a court order because he had hidden inside the house without leaving. Following the arrest of the man, who has been placed at the disposal of the Court of Guard Instruction of the town of Alicante, others have been charged with an alleged crime of forgery as he had used false documentation to acquire two high­end cars from a dealership. After extended research, one of the dealerships was located in Germany.

Bank robber candidate

A MAN convicted of bank robbery is the candidate to represent political party Podemos in Madrid.

Jose Luis Nieto, who is also a former advisor to Manuela Carmena, who was mayor of Madrid until last year, was sentenced by the National High Court to five years and three months in prison for the violent robbery of a bank in Ourense in 1980, when he was 23 years old.

As El Mundo reports, he was a teacher in Vigo and a member of the violent sepa­ ratist group Loita Armada Revolucionaria.

Despite the sentence, de­ livered in 1982, he did not serve it in its entirety as he received a pardon from the socialist government of the time. He was an advisor in two districts of Madrid with the former mayor.

Nieto says that he wants to become their figurehead to bring the party leader, Pablo Iglesias, and the Madrid re­ gional coordinator, Jesus San­ tos, closer together.

the local economy. When we buy local, our money stays lo­ cal, and it strengthens the local economy in two ways. First, buying local keeps money circu­ lating within the local economy.

Studies have shown that local businesses recirculate a greater share of every euro as they cre­ ate locally owned supply chains and invest in their employees.

Data shows that local retail­ ers return 52 per cent of their revenue back into the local economy, compared to just 14 per cent for national chain re­ tailers.

Money circulating through the local economy benefits everyone who is a part of each transaction. For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce.

First, they sell to a local restaurant, which in turn pre­ pares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its local employees and the restaurant uses rev­ enue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbourhood hard­ ware store. This example illus­ trates how the recirculation of money in the local economy leads to a stronger financial foundation for our neighbours and communities.

Buying local also fuels new employment and job opportu­ nities for people within our community. Studies show, lo­ cally owned businesses employ more people per unit of sales and retain more employees over time.

While buying local is finan­

cially com­ pelling to our communities; the benefits to our envi­ ronment are equally impres­ sive. Buying locally reduces the processing of goods, packaging and transportation waste, which leads to less pollution.

WARNING: charity workers WARNING: Spanish police have issued a national warning over thieves posing as charity workers and drugging their victims The National Police has warned of scammers operating throughout Spain posing as NGO charity workers for a group called Clean Hands.

Officials report that the thieves put a little gel sanitiser on your hands and ask you to smell the product.

The hand sanitiser is actually a drug which renders people unconscious; once they regain consciousness, they find that they have been robbed. The National Police advises people not to engage with anyone offering products, surveys etc on the streets, regardless of any ID or proof they may be carrying. They also ask members of the public not to accept drinks in bars from anyone they do not know.

As these dangerous scammers are operating throughout Spain, police have asked members of the public to share the warning as much as possible.

Vaccine roll-out THE Pfizer vaccine could be rolled out in the UK next month claims co­founder of German firm BioNTech.

Professor Ugur Sahin told Sky News the first UK patients could re­ ceive the jab nation­ wide mid­December.

But the scientist be­ hind the vaccine said it will depend on whether it is licensed by the UK regulator in time.

Sahin said it will not be an immediate fix warning “it will be a difficult winter” and “it will become worse be­ fore it becomes bet­ ter.”

Burberry checks losses DESIGNER clothing brand Burberry, like most retailers had a poor first half of 2020 with sales down by 31 per cent to £878 million (€966 million) compared to the previous year. Despite this, they still managed a £51 million (€56 million) profit, although this was down by 75 per cent.

Things are beginning to recover as most of its stores in 59 countries, particularly in China, Korea and the USA have reopened and footfall has increased, meaning that they have almost returned to pre-pandemic turnover.

Spain optimistic for future A LENGTHY report issued on November 13 by the Interna­ tional Monetary Fund (IMF) has concluded that Spain’s fi­ nancial problems because of the Covid­19 pandemic may not be as dire as originally forecast due to a strong third quarter.

Much depends on the re­ sults of the fourth quarter 2020 which will be nega­ tively influenced by the re­ turn to the State of Alarm and there could well be a further slowdown if work

restrictions continue for too long.

There are a number of external problems which impact on the Spanish economy, a high percent­ age of which depends on tourism and Spain has been hit harder than most Euro­ pean economies with GDP (Gross Domestic Product) still 8.7 per cent down on last year.

is that of bad debts rising ‘disproportionately’ hitting banks profitability as even­ tually government loan sup­ port will be withdrawn.

Initially the Spanish gov­ ernment forecast a 7.2 per cent growth in 2021 but in

the budget forecast, this has been upped to 9.8 per cent as the European Union recovery fund comes on­ line, but the IMF think that this is overoptimistic and that 7.2 per cent is more likely to be the final result.

Whilst not forecasting a dreadful year ahead, the IMF did warn “Policies need to continue to mitigate the risk of the recession morph­ ing into financial sector stress with even higher real and social costs.”

IN order to allow itself to pay a dividend to shareholders, Banco Santander will be cre­ ating 722.5 million shares which will be distributed as a rights issue on the basis of one new share for every 23 held.

This has a value (at market price) of €361.2 million and was approved by sharehold­ ers earlier this year after the 2019 dividend was cancelled at the behest of the European Central Bank (ECB).

Shareholders will expect to receive their new shares

RESPONSIBLE adults in the USA are being invited to win a Jameson Irish whiskey tree for Christmas which is nearly nine feet tall and made up from 130 empty Jameson bottles.

Seven trees have been made, each featuring a light­ ing system, and are said to be ‘worth’ $5,000 (€4,200) and according to the promo­ tion, if you place one in your window you will be the envy of al of the neighbours.

To win one of the seven Jameson whiskey trees, Irish whiskey lovers must explain why they deserve to bring a

tree home to share with their friends and family this year in no more than 200 words.

A grand prize of $1,800 (€1,520) will be given to the person making the best re­ sponse and all winners will receive a $45 (€38) whiskey token plus a visit by special­ ist technicians to set up the tree.

It will however be the win­ ner’s responsibility to dis­ mantle once the holiday pe­ riod is over and to either find space to store 130 empty bottles or dispose of them responsibly.

NUMEROUS reports in the UK National Press say that Prime Minister Boris John­ son is now seriously consid­ ering moving the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 to 2030.

This is part of a strategy to achieve climate change targets by 2050. as valued customers, but eventually his outrageous behaviour became too much as by the late 1980s, he was quietly en­ couraged to stay away.

Then in 1988 after his wife had left him, it is believed that he set fire to his home and died at the age of 47.

Now despite setting up franchises in different locations, it has become a vic­ tim of the Covid­19 pandemic and is clos­ ing for good with up to 100 job losses.

Avatel relocates to Madrid HQ

TELECOMMUNICATIONS: The new Madrid office.

SPAIN’S sixth largest fibre optic telecommunications company Avatel, has relocat­ ed its headquarters to Madrid in order to imple­ ment its growth strategy at a national level.

The operator has decided to move from Marbella (Malaga) to the Spanish cap­ ital for “operational and business strategy reasons,” focusing on bringing broad­ band connectivity to rural areas through fibre optics, explained its CEO, Ignacio Aguirre.

As a result of this geo­ graphical move, Avatel has reorganised and resized its different departments, so that it can execute its strate­ gic plan for the next two years to continue to add

business in rural areas where there is limited com­ petition.

With a staff of over 400 people, it says that pro­ motes local employment in rural areas, given that a large part of its workforce is distributed on the ground throughout the company’s commercial and technical network.

As a specialist in the so­ called Empty Spain, Avatel benefited from the lock­ down as there was an in­ crease in demand for con­ nectivity, generated both by the online work of regular residents and by the transfer of thousands of people from big cities to their second homes to minimise risks in the pandemic.

Economy needs stimulus THE Bank of Spain chief economist, Oscar Arce, believes that the European economy needs more stimulus in December or there could be serious financial consequences.

He argues that a continued softening of prices is not just bad for Spain but for all members of the European Union and said in a recent statement “we are seeing an increase in the portion of goods whose prices are increasing very little or falling, which is an indication of the risk.”

It is now down to the European Central Bank to make some swift decisions including additional Quantitative Easing.

Avatel’s staff “were able to telework from the first 24 hours of confinement, as we were already used to doing so due to the decentralised structure we maintained,” says Aguirre.

Fire probe after death NATIONAL POLICE are investigat­ ing a fire in which an 87­year­old woman died and her carer suf­ fered smoke inhalation.

The fire on the fourth floor of a 16­storey block of flats in the cen­ tre of Madrid happened at around 10.15pm on Wednesday, Novem­ ber 12.

According to sources, firefight­ ers pulled the elderly woman's body from the burning flat, and SAMU medics confirmed her death at the scene. They then treated the victim’s 56­year­old carer for smoke inhalation.

The rest of the flats in the block were not affected.

Health authorities recall noodles THE Health authorities have issued a recall for a type of noodles which are reportedly dangerous for people who are gluten intolerant or allergic.

The Buckwheat and Sweet Potato noodles from China, distributed by Terrasana, have been sold in Andalucia, Va­ lencia region, Catalonia, the Canary Islands and Aragon.

The Spanish Agency for Health Safety and Nutrition has advised anyone who is intolerant or allergic to gluten not to consume this product. There is no danger to people who do not have these allergies or intoler­ ance.

The warning was issued by the Dutch authorities re­ garding the lack of warning of the gluten content on the packaging.

The product has the expiry date 30/06/2022 and is sold in packets of 250g. It will be removed from sales channels.

Unfortunately, this precious commodity is being kept firmly under lock and key by UK politicians, who are petrified that using too much of it could send the whole racial issue spiralling completely out of their control.

In fact, their utterly biased ethnic appeasement attitude is merely creating a dangerous criterion that could ultimately bring the whole social order tumbling around their ears.

The beleaguered white majority of UK citizens are now not only riddled with guilt, but utterly petrified of saying or doing the wrong thing in case they find themselves at the receiving end of retributions which could ultimately prove fatal.

The recent resignation of football Association chairman Greg Clarke is a case in point. Now, I confess I have no idea of past indiscretions or opinions of

this man, but if he was pressured to resign in the light of the interview I witnessed, then his persecution was an absolute disgrace. During his address, he was actually acting in defence of black footballers, decrying the fact that they received a great deal of abuse on social media.

So why did he ultimately receive so much pressure and racist accusations that he considered the only recourse was for him to resign? Well as ludicrous as it may sound, it was because he referred to black footballers as ‘high profile coloured players.’ Whaaaa!?

Along with many others, I was truly under the impression that this was one of the preferred and polite ways of referring to the black community?

Wrong! Apparently, the expression was ‘outdated and old fashioned.’ Ah, now I get it, not in vogue any more eh?

Goalposts on the move again! Keep up everyone; yesterday’s acceptable terms are apparently today’s insults! Well I don’t buy it.

This is simply using the racist card to keep the white community confused and on the back foot. Even Meghan Markel on her trip to Africa referred to herself as a

‘woman of colour.’ Three days after Clarke’s resignation, I saw a highly placed police woman in the north of England discussing diversity in the police force.

During the TV interview she made a number of references to ‘coloured’ members and ‘people of colour’ on the force. So where were all the screams of indignation? Why wasn’t her letter of resignation on the desk of the commissioner the following morning?

Don’t be silly, she was of Asian descent herself. Racist accusations only apply if you’re a ‘privileged’ white. Well I personally have had all this brain washing and dangerous nonsense up to here. The whole exercise positively reeks of unfair bias and unacceptable reversed racism. And I abhor racism! I’m also interested to notice that UK companies are now targeting most of their Christmas wares at only 13 per cent of the population and that ITV’s much loved Good Morning programme is about to be recast! I await the slings and arrows.

WE NEED REAL LEADERS, NOT CELEBRITY POLITICIANS!

WHAT a welcome distraction the Biden vs Trumpty Dumpty show was ­ from the UK government’s ongo­ ing Covid chaos and staggering in­ competence.

With every toy that Trump ‘bigly’ threw out of his pram we moved fur­ ther away from the farce of all the UK’s U­turns ­ and evidence that its leaders couldn’t organise a bun fight in a bakery, or a press conference in a pandemic.

Boris Johnson is the court jester that the Conservatives foisted on a nation that found Jeremy Corbyn un­ appealing. Boris has been shown to lack discipline and attention to detail during the floods at the start of the year; the ongoing Covid problem; the school meals fiasco; and, above all, the Brexit negotiations which will deliver few promises made in 2016.

Apparently, he was bounced into the present lockdown by media leaks, possibly from Matt Hancock and/or Michael Gove because he couldn’t make a decision although scientists had advised him a lock­

Cynics regard those who believe in a particular cause or way of life as misguid­ ed or gullible. Let’s take Corona Virus. At present, we simply do not know for cer­ tain its origin, its antidote or how or whether it can ever be eradicated. There is talk about vaccines, while conspiracy theories abound. Most of us wear masks and take precautions. Are those who do not observe these measures cynics or gullible? Probably they are both.

Then there are the millions of scream­ ing Trump supporters. These fanatics would probably have voted for him, even if he were caught on film setting fire to the American flag in the Oval Office. If Michael Jackson were still alive and had put himself forward as a nominee and be­ come a Presidential candidate, many of them would probably have gone for him in the same frenzied way. To most of us, they seem to be gullible, although they

down was needed in September.

In fact, has this government ever once used joined­up thinking? It launched Eat Out to Help Out at the same time as its anti­obesity drive, then blamed Brits for going out and spreading the virus.

Boris has passed the ‘political tip­ ping point.’ This pandemic has be­ come ingrained in the national con­ sciousness: it’s all­consuming, its consequences felt for many years to come. It’s surely already become the defining issue of his premiership.

Himalayas goal

SPANISH mountaineer Carlos Soria, 81 years old, is currently in training to climb the Hi­ malayas, one of the world’s highest peaks, in remembrance of elderly victims of the coron­ avirus pandemic. The challenge would mark Soria as the oldest climber to summit the world’s 14 highest peaks.

“To all those who have disap­ peared because of this terrible pandemic, this terrible crisis, I want as an elderly person to

dedicate it to them,” Soria said outside his home in the Sierra Guadarrama mountains, north of Madrid.

Travel restrictions permit­ ting, Soria hopes to go to Nepal in the spring to take on the 8,167­metre Dhaulagiri climb.

“Now I’m a bit older I think it’s a beautiful idea to show people of a certain age that they shouldn’t abandon things just because of their age,” Soria said.

MADRID security guards who ‘humiliated’ a gay couple could face prison. Prosecutors asked the Provincial Court of Madrid on Friday, November 13 to hand down 18 month sentences to two security guards who harassed and humiliated a gay couple. Iván GA and Francisco MSM allegedly threw out a gay couple from a Fuenlabrada shopping centre in 2017 because they were being affectionate toward each other. Iván GA told the court that customers approached him to complain about two men who “were kissing and making out in an inappropriate attitude” and demanded he notify his superiors. If convicted of a hate crime, the accused face up to 18 months in prison as well as a €3,600 fine.

demic in the long run. It seems beyond ar­ gument that the slow destruction of our planet is caused by the way we are abusing and neglecting the environment. It is up to humanity to implement the necessary solu­ tions urgently, otherwise all other issues, in­ cluding pandemics and the world economy, will soon become irrelevant. Cynics prefer to deny any problem and hope for the best.

In sport, especially in football, much corruption has come to light at the top.

When we witness the adding­on of ‘Fer­ gie time’ and the awarding of dubious penalties and red cards, it is not surprising that we wonder whether results are fixed in favour of certain influential and wealthy clubs.

Of course, many adherents of positive actions and beliefs are fanatical to the ex­ tent that they regard others as unenlight­ ened. This intolerance may exacerbate cynicism among the sceptics.

TWO National Police officers rescued a 10­month­old baby from drowning in Valencia, on Saturday, November 14.

In an incident that took place at around 3.30pm, the offi­ cers were alerted by the baby’s aunt after the baby was hav­ ing difficulty breathing.

Within two minutes of the emergency call, the two heroic officers arrived, and suspecting that the infant could be hav­ ing a cardiac arrest, they took it immediately to La Fe Hospi­ tal, Valencia.

On the way to the hospital, the baby was pale, had purple lips and was unresponsive, while his aunt tried to resuscitate him.

With the quick actions of the police officers and the baby’s aunt, the young baby’s life was saved and left in a stable con­ dition at the hospital.

There’s still some money around LETTERS FROM

CANARIES DEAR reader, I hope this finds you in top form, untouched by strife or worry?

We’re scraping through down here, having largely escaped the now­to­next­May mainland mea­ sures, so far.

Let’s see how we fare with tourism during what we used to quaintly call high season. Most European coun­ tries are locked down, so we’ll be spared the danger of making too much money.

Luckily, we’ll also be spared the danger of the few arriving tourists bringing us Covid, after the Canarian government decree that nobody en­ ters the islands after 14/11 without a negative Covid test result.

President Ángel Victor Torres is doing a good job in tough times, but he can’t work miracles: over 60 Ca­ narian hotels are currently for sale at prices of between €1 to €30 million.

These pandemic victims, mainly

La Fortaleza, a flat­topped volcanic meseta and one of La Gomera’s most emblematic sites, is to be investigat­ ed, mapped and conserved in a long overdue nod to its importance. The original population reputedly took refuge from invading Spanish here, leaping to their deaths rather than suffer capture. This project is one of the many benefits of the island’s ad­ herence to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism.

There’s a precedent here. We could take refuge up there if the neg­ ative test plan doesn’t work out and infected tourists invade, though I’d need a shove to go over the edge.

Those who prefer to take refuge with hashish will be discouraged to hear that the 300 kilos, in nine blocks, found floating between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote is now in police custody being ‘meticulously examined.’

DOG ATTACK Compelled to write this following the DOG ATTACK on THE NERJA - MARO popular campo walk down by the OLD BRIDGE / CAVE AREA. As I too was attacked by a dog off a lead there two years ago. Unfortunately this was a lot more severe to the guy I know, horrible attack by four dogs while the owner sat back and did nothing!! He reported it, incredibly, said it was hard work to get acknowledgement.

NO ACTION WAS TAKEN against the dog owner. NO WARNINGS EXIST IN THIS AREA TO TOURISTS ETC AND IT WOULD BE AWFUL TO SEE SOMEONE GET POSSIBLY KILLED, ESPECIALLY IF IT WAS A CHILD. Seems they are only interested in petty Covid matters now. SO THE POINT IS, IF YOU WALK IN THIS AREA OR ANY OTHER OF NERJA COUNTRYSIDE IT’S PROBABLY BEST TO WALK WITH A STICK ETC FOR PROTECTION. A lot of people in Nerja, let alone unsuspecting tourists who go on this lovely walk, will not be aware of this danger in what seems a nice, quiet area. It seems no one in Nerja Authority wants to take any responsibility to warn or stop these irresponsible dog owners, from risking the lives of innocent walkers.

I sincerely hope you publish this as it may well help even just one adult or child from serious injuries or even a fatality.

Something needs to be done by those who should be doing it!!

OUR VIEW Do curfews work?

EXPERTS say it depends on how the curfew is implemented. Colin Furness, an epidemiologist and associate professor with the University of Toronto, said curfews can be great tools to help contain outbreaks.

When done correctly, he said they have been proven to shorten lockdown periods and help flatten curves.

According to Furness, a curfew can be used to enforce (or reinforce) a certain way of living. By the time they’re announced, he said all options should be closed and there should be “nowhere to go” for people but home.

But if there is no clear policy on store and bar closures, Furness said things can start to appear “authoritarian,” “confusing” and lead to a lot of disobedient and disgruntled residents.

“If people just feel like they’re being pushed around, then you’re going to get civil disobedience and you’re going to get an erosion of trust - trust in government, trust in public health. That is a dreadful problem when you think about the long game.”

Timothy Sly, an epidemiologist and professor emeritus at Ryerson University, said curfews can be useful - under the right conditions.

Sly said countries where the virus has spread out of control or where mask culture has yet to be normalised, could benefit from curfews. In countries in southeast Asia such as Taiwan, Sly said mask mentality was in place long before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The curfew, although confusing and some what contradictory in ways can only be a good thing, it’s not about Covid-19 only spreading after 6pm, it’s about people’s behaviour changing after this time especially when alcohol is involved.

CORRECTIONS

Tourism Dear Editor A Spanish friend of mine commented the other day that although the virus is a terrible occurrence, at long last Spain had their country back from the rampaging hoards of tourists who blocked the roads, car parks, beaches, bars, restaurants and shops.

I asked if any thought was given to the serious implications of what he was saying as those rampaging hoards, as he put it, helped to boost the local economy and pay for infrastructure quite apart from the tens of thousands either directly or indirectly employed in the tourist industry. Most families either have family members or know of friends or relations now unemployed or on short time and one only has to look around at numerous establishments which are now closed, many permanently.

Tourism is the life blood of the area. It’s not only what is seen but those who are employed in the services behind the scene. As an example Malaga Airport now employ only a fraction of those who would normally be there. Even at this time of the year the arrival and departure boards would normally be full of aircraft movement with planes full of passengers. Most aircraft, and there are very few now, are almost empty, something that cannot go on indefinitely.

A leading British airline recently said they would normally have already sold about 60 per cent of seats for the next summer period. At present it’s in single figures.

As far as the British are concerned, who numerically make up the highest proportion of visitors, there is the added problem of Brexit and the intransigent attitude by both sides which may make it difficult to come and go. Many pensioners spend the winter months and their money in Spain but if the authorities strictly implement the 90 days in 180 rule their time here will be greatly reduced. Taking residencia is a way around the problem in some ways, but has a number of disadvantages if the person’s main source of income and benefits are currently UK based.

We know of a number of people who intend to sell their property or will not renew their rental contract, something they would never have said previously.

In the last year there has been a huge surge in building but who will buy is another matter. Hopefully there will not be another 2008 situation of large numbers of unsold property.

Although I am a glass half full person rather than a glass half empty, I believe there is a bumpy and uncertain road ahead for a number of countries and it will be several years before there is full recovery.

So Spain may get their country back, but at what cost?

The struggles we go through with bipolar disorder gives us a unique position to let others see our beauty.

For years I didn’t think I had a purpose. I was just existing. But then I found something meaningful and that is sharing my journey.

People have messaged saying that my story was their story.

Every time I shared my story, my bipolar illness had less control over me.

Like everyone I have known defeat, suffering, and struggle.

When someone finds out they are talking to a person who has walked the walk of mental illness they tend to open up. Often for

the first time. I tell my story so others can begin to tell theirs.

I remember listening to people talk about their story and I got a feeling of calmness in my chest. I realised I was not alone. I was not weird. That my feelings were real. That the thoughts in my head were not normal , but were in fact ‘our kind of normal.’

Let mothers do their jobs IF your cat has had kittens and you’ve been lucky enough to find homes for them, it may be very tempt­ ing to get them to their new home as soon as possible.

Vets recommend that newborn kittens are allowed to stay with their mothers for at least eight weeks, prefer­ ably 10, to allow mums to do their full job and avoid se­ rious problems in the future for the youngsters.

Kittens taken from their mothers too early may suffer from stunted growth and frequent illness. A cat’s milk provides all the nutrients and antibodies they will need.

Mothers play a vital role in developing their off­ spring’s characters and teaching correct behaviour. A kitten taken from its mother and litter mates too soon maybe aggressive and quick to bite or scratch. They may also find it hard to learn basic things like grooming themselves.

It’s a pretty tough time here MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LIVE on the Costa del Sol and, all in all, we are having a pretty tough time here at the moment what with there not being any holidaymakers, curfews and not be­ ing able to have freedom of movement from one municipality to another, which, in principle, I guess seemed like a good idea, but in practice is ridiculous.

In some places here technically you can’t cross the road because one side of the street is in one town and the other side is somewhere else.

All shopkeepers are really struggling to exist right now and a few cafes and restaurants, that I’ve been going to for years, say they are getting zero help from their local councils and some are consider­ ing closing down for good. So I was pretty amazed to see that Fuengirola had decid­ ed to spend millions of euros on ripping up the square in Los Boliches and rebuild it. This was a perfectly good square. It had seating, a children’s playground, fountains and, at Christmas, always had a beautiful tree.

Where are their brains? How can you

justify spending this amount of money on a project like this? It’s like a complete kick in the nuts to all the locals who are being refused any help. Postpone it because it’s totally unnecessary. If you have some spare money, fix the potholes everywhere that kill your tyres and wheels.

Whilst I’m ranting at the local councils, what’s this new idea of allowing restau­ rants to stick astro turf and tubs of flowers in the few parking spaces that are avail­ able outside their premises?

It’s absolutely pointless because you are actually eating out in the road. There aren’t enough parking spaces around any­ way. I was sitting at one place the other day and watched a driver reversing into the space next to the ‘new extension’ and actually hit the tub of flowers and knocked it into the table nearest to it. It looks ex­ actly what it is ­ tables in the road. Maybe it’s just another money raising idea. All I know is that it looks stupid and could be pretty dangerous considering how folks drive out here.

Finally I’ve had a very sad reality check the last few weeks. Some of my heroes Sean Connery, Ray Clemence, Bobby Ball and Des O’Conner have passed. I guess what that tell me is how important it is to enjoy people whilst they are here.

A huge boost for Walking Football on the Costas is the decision by the Australian Walking Football team to hold their acclimatisation period on the Costa del Sol prior to their participation in a Walk­ ing Football World Cup Tour­ nament in Switzerland in May 2022.

The local clubs can look for­ ward to playing warm up matches against the ‘Aussies’ in their build up to the Tour­ nament. The League Manage­ ment Committee will assist in arranging the necessary facili­ ties for the visitors.

Finally Walking Football Spain members held a minute’s silence at their ses­ sions in remembrance of those who gave their lives for our freedom.
