IT is almost certain that the AVE high speed train will not reach Almeria in 2023.

Manuel de la Fuente, the central government’s Sub­del­ egate to Almeria, nevertheless revealed that €395 million of the €600 million 2021 Budget assignment for Spain’s railways will be spent on the Almeria­ Murcia AVE line.

De la Fuente blamed the de­ lay on “obstructions” in Lorca in neighbouring Murcia, ex­ plaining that the absence of a “definitive project” there had resulted in an inevitable holdup.

The different sections of the line now under construction were not independent, he said.

To reach Murcia from Alme­ ria it was necessary to go through Lorca and progress could not be made until the problem there was resolved, he stressed.

The Sub­Delegate argued that if the present government had referred to 2023 “it was

because this was the date set by the former ministerial team.”

If the previous team had gone ahead they, too, would also have found it “completely impossible” to keep their promise to deliver the com­ pleted AVE line on time.

“There has been a lot of de­ bate about dates,” De la Fuente said.

“I think that it is more rele­ vant to know that the Almeria­ Murcia AVE line will be com­ pleted. I have said so ad nauseum,” he declared.

“It is essential to be aware of the scale of investment that is required. It is the province’s most important, complex and significant undertaking.”

De la Fuente added that splitting hairs over small de­ tails like a “a year more or a year less” were irrelevant when those taking part in the debate were well aware of the complexity of the work itself and the red tape involved.

There are three versions to choose from, each of which has been designed by an expert, for followers

LUBRIN: Famous for olives, honey and goat’s milk.

LUBRIN is offering visitors the chance to pick their own olives, milk a goat and cut honey­ comb.

The municipality is famous for all three products and the town hall is extending its tourist offer with the new Da Sentido a Tus Sentido (Make Sense of Your Senses) route.

They can make the products’ acquaintance in a hands­on manner and will discover that collecting the olives that go into the local oil might be picturesque, but is also a back­ breaking task. They’ll find that there is a knack to milking a goat and cutting honey­ comb isn’t as easy as it looks.

Rubbish plant All in the windfall family ALBOX will receive €400,000 to cover expenses generated by the Almanzora­Levante­Los Velez Consortium’s rubbish treatment plant located there.

The consortium’s latest General Meeting ap­ proved new statutes that included compensat­ ing the municipality that houses the plant. They also specified that this would cease should the plant close or the town impose “some type of tax.”

Welcoming the good news, Albox mayor Fran­ cisco Torrecillas pointed out that this was the result of three years of negotiations which had lasted three years.

ALMERIA’S high court acquitted a Guardia Civil officer of trying to access unauthorised information.

He explained that he did so because his sister­in­law’s husband was being black­ mailed by a Lithuanian gang and he wanted to discover if their claims that the former was seeing another woman were true.

The court recognised that the Guardia Civil officer logged on to the security forces’ com­ puters but said there was no evidence that he entered the SIGO Operations Manage­ ment System or hotel registers.

Although he had been in cardiac arrest, medics at the scene succeeded in reviving and stabilising the child who was later admitted to intensive care.

Blind eye HUERCAL DE ALMERIA mayor Ismael Torres will stand trial for allowing a fast-food restaurant to operate there without a licence. The Fiscalia (Public Prosecution Department) asked for a two-year sentence, maintaining that Torres had displayed ‘deliberate passivity,’ and also recommended preventing him from holding public office for 12 years.

Market day THE open-air market was held in Albox on Tuesday November 3 but with strict security measures and the accent on social distancing. Covid-19 cases were under control, said Albox mayor Franciso Torrecillas, who added that he realised the market traders should not continue to be affected by the health crisis.

Lucky number THE second prize in Spain’s national lottery went to the holder of number 55,655, which was bought in Roquetas and will have won them €120,000 for every ticket of 10 ‘decimos.’

The tickets were sold in the Lottery Administration in Avenida del Toyo de Retamar.

Perilous journey ALMERIA City Guardia Civil officers went to the rescue of a young man whom they spotted on the Melilla ferry, trying to enter the country hidden below the chassis of a lorry. The stowaway who was ‘exhausted and dehydrated’ was handed over to the National Police in accordance with immigration laws.

Good teachers THREE Almeria teachers were nominated for the fourth Educa Abanca awards, regarded as education’s Oscars. One of them, Aurora Sota Diaz from the Álvarez de Sotomayor school in Cuevas del Almanzora, was nominated for the third year running.

An elevating experience ADRA port has a new gantry crane.

Costing roughly €700,000, the crane was financed by An­ dalucia’s Public Works and In­ frastructure department via the regional ports’ authority, Puertos de Andalucia.

Adra’s mayor Manuel Cortes visited the port to see the new equipment, which he ex­ plained will improve services for the local fishing fleet as well as the pleasure craft that use the port.

“The change of regional gov­ ernment has suited our munic­ ipality very well, because the Junta is making big invest­ ments, especially at the port,” Cortes said.

Renewing the crane was es­ sential in providing the fishing sector with more resources, the mayor added, pointing out that everybody benefited when regional and local gov­ ernments collaborated.

Problem solved WATER from Vera’s Cuatro Caños fountain will top up Rambla del Algarrobo lake.

At present, water pumped to the troughs in the old washhouse is later lost in the sewage system.

Instead of wasting the wa­ ter, Vera’s Infrastructure councillor Alfonso Garcia an­ nounced that this is to be channelled to the lake to off­ set evaporation.

“The lake will now be full and once well­oxygenated there will be no more pond scum and bad smells.”

What’s in a (royal) name SOCIALIST councillors aban­ doned a Roquetas Council meeting after the local gov­ ernment annulled a 2016 de­ cision to rename the munici­ pal Sports Centre.

The Pabellon de Deportes Infanta Cristina will remain as it is, despite a previous ­ and unanimous ­ vote to delete the name of King Juan Carlos I’s daughter.

Sahara moves over to Almeria THE 2020 Titan Desert six­day mountain bike race has had to rein­ vent and relocate it­ self.

Due to be run over 400 kilometres in Mo­ rocco between No­ vember 1 and 6, the race had to swap the Sahara for Almeria owing to the coron­ avirus pandemic.

More than 500 peo­ ple competed, with some big names amongst them. These included cycling greats like Miguel In­ durain, the five­times winner of the Tour de France who signed up for this mountain bike race for the first time.

But as much as a competition, the race is also an experience, according to the Titan World Series presi­ dent, Juan Porcar.

At the presentation of the race in the Pa­ tio de Luces in the Diputacion building in Almeria City, the provincial council’s president Javier Aure­ liano Garcia com­ mented that the province had been the setting for many films.

Now it was about to become “a land of adventure,” Garcia said.

The 400­kilometre race began on No­ vember 1 and includ­ ed two mountain days in Sierra de Alhamilla, with 7,000 metres de­ voted to ascents.

Before the race ended on November 6, riders also had to contend with the Tabernas desert, the karst landscape in Sorbas and the Le­ gion’s Viator training ground.

Taiwan 200 No Refunds Grave Dispute

RYANAIR: Flights are still operatiing and being used for essential travel.

NO refunds will be offered for passengers hit by the new English lockdown, ac­ cording to Ryanair CEO, Michael O’Leary, on Mon­ day, November 2.

With the UK going into lockdown and banned from flying abroad this month, O’Leary said: “If the govern­ ment wants to change that advice and provide refunds themselves, they can feel

free to do so.”

The CEO said customers af­ fected by the new restric­ tions can reschedule flights, however, they would not get their money back.

He said that because Ryanair flights are still oper­ ating and being used by peo­ ple travelling for work, and for essential reasons, there is no reason for flights to be re­ funded.

DOCTORS in Houston, Texas studied more than 5,000 coronavirus pa­ tients and found that 99.9 per cent of cases were caused by a new virus mutation, called D614G. This D614G strain of SARS­CoV­2 is the most common version world­ wide, accounting for 85 per cent of cases, and first appeared in Europe

A GRAVE dispute in Hertfordshire led to the burial of a body being delayed, causing further grief to the mourning family.

The funeral of 98­year­old William Worby was de­ layed by two hours after a priest at Old Hall Green in Hertfordshire decided to question the size of the grave.

His son Peter said that due to the added stress and subsequent delay, the family was “robbed of grief.”

The issue had been raised prior to the service, which occurred on Wednesday, October 28, however, the family believed the situation had been resolved in advance.

Eventually, the service went ahead, despite further grave dispute discussions delaying the body burial.

House Party Fine A WHOPPING £10,000 fine has been issued to a house party organiser in Brighton for breaching Covid rules.

The fine was issued by po­ lice after they broke up a par­ ty of more than 100 people at a property in Norwich Drive at

around midnight on Saturday, October 31.

The university town is known for its parties and vi­ brant nightlife but under Covid regulations, this particu­ lar party was in breach of strict laws.

WHILE many countries around the world are facing in­ creased restrictions and lockdown, Taiwan is giving hope as it has achieved 200 days without a locally transmitted Covid case.

Taiwan, an island of 23 million, reached this impressive new landmark on Thursday, October 29, with its last local coronavirus case recorded on April 12.

Experts say that Taiwan did several things right to avoid the delay of a second wave, including closing bor­ ders early and implementing compulsory mask­wearing from the outset.

The country has had 550 confirmed coronavirus cases in total throughout the pandemic and only seven deaths.

Early Protection VACCINES for children could protect against Covid-19, claims a researcher.

Cross-immunity from the paediatric tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccine could protect children against coronavirus, an investigation carried out by Pedro A Reche, from the Immunology Department of the Complutense University of Madrid has found. Covid-19 severely affects the elderly while children are largely protected, said the researcher.

“In this study, the possible cross-immunity induced by paediatric vaccines against SARSCoV-2 has been evaluated, concluding that the vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP) may be responsible for said protection,” said Reche.

High and dry FIREFIGHTERS in Essex rescued three men believed to be in their late teens who became trapped inside an industrial tumble dryer in Essex.

Crew from Loughton and Harlow were called to a derelict laundry site in Bower Hill, Epping at 6.35pm on Friday, October 30.

According to Essex Fire and Rescue Service, two of the men had already climbed into the tumble dryer when a third man’s ankles became trapped in the door when he tried to crawl in.

Firefighters worked with Essex Police, Helicopter Medical Emergency Service (HEMS) and the Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to rescue the men.

Burgos Riots A PROTEST turned nasty in Burgos as members of the public took to the streets to protest the continued restrictions on public freedom in Spain.

The Burgos area of Gamonal saw violence break out between protestors and police in the area on Friday, October 30, just as the evening’s curfew measures were coming into effect.

The initial protests saw over a thousand people take to the

streets to demonstrate the actions being taken by the government.

As the protesters started to dissipate, around 40 members were left on Victoria Street and started burning rubbish containers and causing significant damage to public property.

However, their efforts were not supported by the local residents with many applauding the efforts of Local Police in containing the violence.

Penguin Pay Day A FORMER birdkeeper in the UK has been jailed for 32 months after stealing penguins from a British zoo and selling them on Facebook.

On Friday, October 30, Bradley Tomes, 25, a former birdkeeper was sentenced for the theft of Humboldt penguins named, Pablo and Penny from Lakes Safari Zoo during his time working there as an aviarist.

It was discovered that Tomes broke into the zoo more than once to steal a range of rare and exotic animals including egrets, penguins and macaws.

He was finally detained after one of the buyers contacted a vet because the birds were in particularly poor health.

Stoner Rage A VIOLENT stoner in the UK has killed his cat after it found his weed stash and ate it.

Aaron Chapman, 29, from Bodmin, Cornwall, has been sentenced to jail for a total of four months after he was found guilty of stabbing his cat, Lord Biris, to death at a New Year’s party in 2018.

Chapman discovered that the feline had gotten into his private marihuana stash and ate it during the night’s festivities. He became so enraged that he threw the cat to the ground and stabbed it repeatedly in front of traumatised guests.

Magistrates said it was the ‘most horrendous, vicious assault on his own cat.’

A FLU vaccine at the centre of a probe into 59 deaths in Asia is used in Spain and ‘safe’, according to French laboratory Sanofi.

Sanofi is responsible for the Vaxigrip Tetra flu vaccine and the vaccine is applied in several autonomous communities in Spain, stressing there are “no safety problems.” While Sanofi didn’t specifiy in which commu­ nities it is being used, information in various media at the start of the flu campaign indicated the regions include the Valencian Community, the Canary Islands, Galicia and Andalucia.

Vaxigrip Tetra is one of two vaccines involved in controversy in South Korea, where its application was linked to the subsequent death of at least 59 people.

A 14-Y EA R-O L D girl has been arrested in south Lon­ don on suspicion of murder after a man was stabbed to death in Crawley.

The incident happened in the Three Bridges area of Crawley, West Sussex where a 24­year­old man was found dead in the street at 9pm on Tuesday, October 27.

The teenage girl was fi­ nally arrested on suspicion

of murder when she was found by police on Wednesday, October 28, whilst a 21­year­old man from London was also ar­ rested on suspicion of as­ sisting the offender.

The man was treated by the emergency services, in­ cluding paramedics and an air ambulance doctor, but they could not save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Peacocks Prompt Police Action

A GROUP of wild peacocks roaming around the vil­ lage of Henfield in West Sussex has prompted po­ lice action following resi­ dent complaints.

The future of the pea­ cocks in the village has been placed into uncer­ tainty after Sussex Police said they were forced to act after the “patience of some long­term residents had worn thin.”

Guaranteed Flights Hunted Peace of mind for customers.

AIR MALTA is set to guarantee flight operations ‘even with one person on board,’ according to Economy Minister Silvio Schem­ bri.

The new scheme will see its winter schedule provide some peace of mind for customers after many have had their travel plans ruined by the Covid pandemic.

Speaking about the plan, as long as laws and restrictions per­

mit, Schembri said: “This will en­ sure the operation of the network guaranteeing Air Malta flights no matter the situation on the ground.”

Even with an increase in cancel­ lations the scheme will still make 50 per cemt of its flights available and according to Schembri, there will be flights to 21 destinations in the coming months, with some 156 flights per week operated.

140 Dead at sea AT least 140 migrants heading for Europe have drowned off the coast of Senegal after their boat caught fire and capsized, according to the UN migration agency on Thursday, October 29.

The horrific incident occurred after a boat carrying over 200 peo­ ple sank a few hours after leaving the fishing town of Mbour, 100 km (60 miles) south of the capital Dakar, on Saturday, October 24.

The boat heading for Europe, which is said to be one of the deadliest to be recorded this year, was engulfed by thick black smoke as people swam frantically towards a local rescue boat in or­ der to get away.

THOUSANDS of German police plan to hunt down lockdown rule­ breakers, according to Interior Minister Horst Seehofer.

In an announcement on Thursday, October 29, it was confirmed that since the stricter lock­ down measures were put in place, the German government were mak­ ing plans to deploy thou­ sands of its federal police officers across the coun­ try to enforce them.

The radical measures will start on Monday, November 2, after Chan­ cellor Angela Merkel and Germany’s state leaders agreed on Wednesday, October 28 that in order to stop the further spread, deaths and in­ fections of the coron­ avirus, an emergency month­long lockdown, including closing restau­ rants, gyms and the­ atres, was needed.

Humiliated Barrister A BLACK barrister in Essex, who was mistaken for a defendant three times in one day, is set to meet the head of the Courts service.

‘Humiliated’ Alexandra Wilson was challenged by a security officer, a solicitor, and a clerk at a magistrates’ court in Sep­ tember after being mistaken for a defendant.

According to the BBC, the 25­year­old from Essex did re­ ceive an apology, however, in a meeting due next month she is hoping for ‘real change’.

“It was quite humiliating to be shouted at, and to try to re­ main calm and focus on what I was trying to do knowing also that I’m then about to present a case in that same court­ room,” Ms Wilson said.

Boeing Cuts JET airline maker Boeing plans to cut thousands of ex­ tra jobs after suffering more losses.

The coronavirus pandemic has been destroying the avi­ ation industry and looks set to do more damage to Boe­ ing after it posted its fourth quarterly loss in a row on Wednesday, October 28.

Now, Boeing plans to cut its workforce by around 30,000 people this year, which has risen significantly

from a previous target of around 19,000 job cuts.

After suffering more loss­ es due to the pandemic and the 19­month­old worldwide 737 MAX ban triggered by two fatal accidents, a state­ ment made to the AP re­ vealed: “Boeing will cut more jobs as it continues to bleed mon­ ey and lose revenue during a pandemic that has smoth­ ered demand for new airline planes.”

Next Level UK high street and online retailer Next is outper­ forming its competitors after reporting better­ than­expected sales over the last three months amidst Covid chaos.

Supply constraints at its warehouses meant it could only focus on full­ price sales, meaning full­ price sales in the third quarter (to October 24) were 2.8 per cent higher than a year ago.

Next is set to see a full­year pre­tax profit of £365m, a total which is £65m higher than was forecast in September.

Shares in Next are also up 1.5 per cent.

Although despite the excellent news, this fig­ ure is way down on 2019’s figure, in fact, it is less than half the £748m achieved last year.

Whale That Was Lucky A PERFECTLY placed sculpture of a whale saved the life of a train driver in Spijkenisse, near the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, after it crashed through a barrier at the end of the tracks on Sunday, November 1.

The lucky escape for the Metro driver hap­ pened shortly before midnight when instead of dropping 10m (32ft) into the water below, the con­ veniently placed artwork left the train suspended in mid­air, avoiding a hor­ ror crash.

The sculpture erected in the water, titled Whale Tails, is the work of the architect and artist Maarten Struijs, and has sat at the end of the De Akkers metro station since 2002.

Man mauled Primark Expect Losses

DW I G H T T U R N E R, 50, was mauled by a black leopard in a backyard ani­ mal enclosure in South Florida.

Baby Milk Supplement PHARMACISTS in Italy have reported a surge in a baby milk supplement being snapped up by people looking to protect themselves against Covid.

A video claiming that Lactoferrin, a product usually marketed as an immune system booster for babies, went viral and sparked people within Italy to flock to their nearest pharmacy in order to buy the ‘miracle’ product.

The demand for Lactoferrin, an important immune­ supporting glycoprotein that is found in breast milk, has meant a large pharmacy in central Rome is now shifting up to 100 boxes of the supplement each week compared with just two or three in a month in normal times.

PRIMARK has warned of a £375 million hit from the loss of sales due to lockdown closures.

Owners of the retail giants, Associated British Foods, estimated the significant loss due to the Covid restrictions as all Primark stores in Ireland, France, Belgium, Wales, Catalonia and Slovenia are temporarily closed.

A MOTHER from Fuengirola has had custody of her child removed after the 18­day­old baby girl tested positive for cocaine. The baby is said to be suffering from neonatal ab­ stinence syndrome, a medical condition that occurs when a foetus has been exposed to drugs during pregnancy.

The mother was put under investigation for prenatal abuse on October 8 after doctors at the Costa del Sol hospi­ tal in Marbella diagnosed the new­born. Supported by the Local Police, the Child Protection Service of the Andalucian government removed the baby from the custody of her parents.

AN airport boss has blasted the UK gov­ ernment over its “shocking” neglect of the aviation and travel industry following lockdowns and restrictions.

Charlie Cornish, the chief executive of Britain’s biggest airport group, MAG, ac­ cused Boris Johnson of “effectively shut­ ting down his business.”

Ocado Robots

BRITISH online supermarket and technology group, Ocado, has bought two robotic com­ panies after hiking its profit forecasts.

The purchases of Kindred Systems, an advanced piece­ picking robotics company, for $262 million (€225 million) and robotic arm designer Haddington Dynamics Inc for $25 million (€21 million), comes on the back of strong business being done by the company this year, whilst other high street chains strug­ gle.

Tim Steiner: “Ocado contin­ ues to see high demand as consumers migrate to online grocery in record numbers.

Sales are in line with the trends reported in the third quarter although growth rates reflect the seasonality of the quarter.

Vatican U-Turn ACCORDING to the Vatican, Pope Francis’s civil union laws comments “were taken out of context” as it moves to clarify their stance on the matter.

Legend Lost COMEDY star Bobby Ball has died of coronavirus at the age of 76, his manager Phil Dale con­ firmed.

A statement read: “It is with great personal sadness that on behalf of Yvonne Ball, and the family, and Tommy Can­ non, I announce that Bobby Ball passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on October 28, 2020 at approximately 9.30pm.”

Bobby had been tak­ en to the hospital for tests as he started with breathing problems. At first it was thought to be a chest infection but a test proved positive for Covid­19.

Just last year, the leg­ endary comedy duo raised the roof at Salon Varietes Theatre during a visit to Fuengirola.

Corbyn Suspended JEREMY CORBYN has been suspended by the Labour party fol­ lowing his refusal to apologise over anti­Semitism allegations.

On Thursday, October 29 the Equality and Human Rights Commission found that there were three separate breaches of the law ­ for members harassing Jewish members, Mr Corbyn’s team stepping in and interfering with complaints of anti­Semitic bullying, and the party failing to provide training to deal with those complaints.

However, responding to the findings, Mr Corbyn said that he didn’t “accept all of the report’s findings.”

He refused to apologise and said instead: “The scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media.”

SCOTTISH miners con­ victed during the 1984­ 85 strike are to be par­ doned by the Scottish government.

More than 500 of around 1,500 miners arrested during the na­ tional dispute were convicted.

A collective pardon, which will require new legislation, would also apply to miners who have since died.

The Justice Secretary said: “There is no doubt that many min­ ers suffered great hardship because of the strike and convic­ tions arising from it.

“Although the strike took place some 35 years ago, it is clear from conversations I have had with many miners the pain they feel is still very raw to this day.”

Teacher caught

WHEN a Montreal high school teacher was filmed using the n­word in class, multiple times, he said it was for edu­ cational purposes, in a con­ text that was “purely histori­ cal.”

But several former students at the school, Henri­Bourassa High School in Montreal North took to social media to insist that teacher Vincent Ouellette regularly used of­ fensive language in class.

situation, the teacher target­ ed some Muslim students in the class and asked them to apologise for the events that happened in France,” said one young student, named only as Hiba.

He did Nazi salutes in class every time he talked about Hitler, she said.

Fists fly A WOMAN on a Ryanair Malaga to Manchester flight marched down the plane to a male passenger and shouted “I’m going to smash you up” before a full scale brawl broke out.

The Ryanair flight had taken off from Malaga and was only around 20 minutes from landing when the fight broke out. Police were seen on board the plane after it landed in Manchester and arrested one male pas­ senger on Monday, Octo­ ber 26.

A spokesman for Ryanair said: “The crew of this flight from Malaga to Manchester requested police assistance upon ar­ rival after several passen­ gers became disruptive shortly before arrival.

“This is now a matter for local police.”

Neglect COLD-HEARTED Sharon Goldie, 45, accused her 13-year-old daughter Robyn of faking illness and went to the pub instead of looking after her, the High Court in Edinburgh heard.

Her daughter was dead in the living room of their Wishaw home from a perforated ulcer when Goldie returned later on the night of July 26, 2018.

Sentencing her to three and a half years in prison on Thursday, October 29, Lord Beckett said: “When your daughter became ill and was repeatedly trying to get to hospital you were substantially motivated by protecting yourself from closer scrutiny by the authorities which would have inevitably followed hospital admission.”

Goldie, of Lomond Drive, Wishaw, admitted wilfully ill treating and neglecting Robyn between July 12, 2017 and July 26, 2018.

Flat and Fierce BREAST cancer survivor Ey­ lon Nuphar celebrates scars topless on the cover of an Is­ raeli women’s magazine, one month after undergoing a double mastectomy.

The 49­year­old perform­ ing artist was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33 and went through chemotherapy, a lumpecto­ my, and radiation, but opted not to have surgery.

Sadly, the cancer returned 16 years later and Nuphar opted for a double mastec­

SLEEPY burglar Mark Cooper was found asleep next to a half­eat­ en cheesecake, inside the Sunderland bar he was attempting to steal from, say Northumbria Police.

The 41­year­old, who was jailed at South Tyneside Magis­ trates' Court for 26 weeks after admitting burglary, was found by police inside the 808 Bar & Kitchen on St Thomas Street, Sunder­ land, on Saturday, October 24.

The burglar was also ordered to pay £30 compensation to the Sunderland bar after helping himself to alcohol, and the cheese­ cake!

The Bank of Spain has in the past stated that it is in favour of bank consolida­

tion (as with Bankia and Caixa Bank) as this will cre­ ate stronger operations, more able to cope with a possible recession especial­ ly if unguaranteed bad loans (including mortgages) grow and they cannot be sold on to third parties.

Currently the Spanish government benefits from the purchase by the Euro­ pean Central Bank of its low interest bonds, but at some stage repayment will most likely be required.

Passing on old butane bottles I have lived in Spain for 17 years using the normal butane gas bottles. Now we are changing to all electric. THE third quarter of 2020 has seen a remarkable turn­ around in terms of volume with GDP up by 16.7 per cent according to the National In­ stitute of Statistics (INE) meaning that Spanish Gross Domestic Product has fallen by 8.7 per cent as opposed to 21.5 per cent in the previous quarter.

There has been a significant increase in demand for goods both nationally and equally importantly internationally which has been one of the main reasons for the increase even though the number of hours worked during the quarter has fallen slightly.

Unemployment continues to rise from 15.3 per cent last quarter to 16.3 per cent this quarter, some 350,000 people

bringing the jobless total to 3.7 million and several hun­ dred thousand more are in ERTE (furlough) but receiving financial support from the government.

The Spanish government wants to stand by its socialist principles so that it can in­ crease financial support for the most poverty stricken, in­ crease pensions, introduce a basic income scheme and in­ ject greater funding for the health service, but this all comes at a cost.

As expected, there will be more taxes on the better off with the introduction of high­ er capital gains and business taxes and the government has the funding promised by the European Union to fall back on.

BRITISH banks are both heroes and possibly villains with re­ gards to the amount of money they have leant to businesses but also, they have reaped a pretty good reward from the UK government.

The PA news agency was told, following a freedom of in­ formation request, that the government has paid at least £65 million in interest to the banks by way of support to en­ courage that the loans are made.

A further freedom of infor­ mation request by the British Business Bank found that they were charged at 5.1 per cent, lower than commercial loans but still much higher than the Bank of England rate of 0.1 per cent.

Whilst the Spanish govern­ ment looks to increase ex­ ports, the Koreans in turn see Spain as a natural stepping stone to expand their trade across South America.

Pizza Express to slice 1,300 jobs coronavirus lockdown areas had caused a severe drop in people din­ ing out.

All of the 370 Pizza Express restaurants across the UK are ex­ pected to be affected by the job losses.

In a statement, company MD Zoe Bowley said the recent surge in coronavirus cases “is again causing footfall to decline across the UK.” “As this is expected to continue for some months, we sadly need to make changes that will impact more

of our team members,” she added.

Pizza Express was reported to be in difficulty last October after it ended the year with £1,1 billion (€1.234 billion) worth of debt fol­ lowing a pre­tax loss of £55 million (€60.5 million).

Currency outlook: US dollar rallies amid renewed coronavirus panic, Brexit drama rocks the pound

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.91 to £0.90 EUR/USD: Unchanged at $1.17 The euro has had a rough time through October as a second wave of coronavirus cases swept through Europe, prompting countries to impose increasingly strict re­ strictions.

These restrictions have already started to have a demonstrable impact on the Eurozone economy, with a contraction in this month’s PMI figures stoking fears the bloc faces a double­dip recession.

With France and Germany imposing new lockdown measures through Novem­ ber, and other Eurozone countries likely to follow their lead, the economic out­ look in the bloc is looking increasingly bleak, which may drive the euro lower in the weeks to come.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.09 to €1.10 GBP/USD: Up from $1.28 to $1.30 The pound has fluctuated over the past month, mostly as a result of heightened Brexit uncertainty as the UK and EU clashed over the terms of their future trade relationship.

While the back and forth over a deal created considerable volatility in GBP ex­ change rates, particularly with Boris Johnson declaring at one point that trade talks were ‘over’, a prevailing sense of cautious optimism ultimately saw Ster­ ling strengthen through October.

Going forward, this volatility in the pound is only likely to become more pro­

nounced, as the ongoing uncertainty sur­ rounding Brexit is set to be compounded by rising speculation that the UK will need to impose a second national lock­ down amidst an alarming surge in coron­ avirus.

However, there remains considerable upside potential in the pound if UK­EU talks move in the right direction.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.77 to £0.76 USD/EUR: Unchanged at €0.85 After rocketing higher in September, the US dollar has found itself giving some ground this month amidst shifting market sentiment and concerns over the US labour market.

This weakness was most prevalent through mid­October as markets were cheered by perhaps misguided optimism that a new US stimulus package would be agreed before the election.

However, the US dollar ended the month on a high after markets were gripped by fresh panic over the coron­ avirus pandemic, with investors flocking back to the safe­haven currency as the prospect of new lockdowns threaten to derail the recovery in the global econo­ my.

Looking ahead, we expect the ‘Green­ back’ to continue to benefit from safe­ haven flows in the coming weeks due to heightened coronavirus jitters, as well as lingering political uncertainty in the wake of the US presidential election.

Don’t hold yer breath!

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I HAVE always maintained that political correctness would be the death of the UK. Witnessing the facts emerging from this week’s inquest into the Manchester bombing it appears my predictions have tragically begun to materialise.

According to his testimony, the security guard responsible for allowing this despicable piece of pig swill to continue his mission of death admitted he hadn’t challenged him because he ‘didn’t want to appear racist!’ This was despite the monster transparently ticking every suspicious box on the list. The colossal back pack he was carrying should alone have aroused suspicion, even if it had been carried in by the Pope himself!

No, I’m afraid this witness’s admission simply shows us that all those who advocate political correctness and the suppression of free speech, basically have the blood of all those young people on their hands. To my

mind they are all traitors and are guilty of treason. If we had allowed thousands of young able bodied Germans, to enter and be succoured in the UK before the First World War, there wouldn’t have been a second!

If we had also decided to subsequently implement laws of Political Correctness and the suppression of free speech it would have been akin to handing the German interlopers weapons of mass destruction and the country would have been destroyed within weeks. Someone truly does have to get a grip.

Scotland Yard has admitted there are at least 5,000 Jihadists in Britain alone, with more than 30,000 operating in terrorist cells, and reinforcements are arriving every day!

How much more will it take for our politicians to act ­ or even acknowledge the true menace of Islamist extremism?

In the last two weeks there have been three major terrorist attacks in France.

Three of the innocent victims were actually beheaded in public by individuals screaming Allahu Akbar. ‘Ah,’ bleat the so­ called moderates, ‘but the majority of Muslims are not like that.’ No and not all the Germans were Nazis. There are 25 million Muslims

living in Europe (yep!), six million in France alone. So where are all these ‘moderates’?

Why they are not out packing the streets and city centres bearing signs denouncing the extremists, along with their religious leaders decrying these violent and unacceptable acts of violence in concerted efforts to bridge the enormous gulf that exists between our two societies? Well don’t hold yer breath!

The advice given by the oft misquoted John Stuart Mills and reiterated by JF Kennedy comes glaringly to mind. ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should look on and do nothing.’

I’m also getting extremely peeved at being made to feel guilty for being white. But that is for another column entirely.

Call the police!

CONSULAR MATTERS S U R E LY all of us at some point in our lives have needed to call the police to request their help, in Spain it’s easy to call the police, the difficulty is in calling the right po­ lice.

In Spain we have, depending on where you live, the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the regional police and the Local Police, which makes it really difficult to know where to go to request help you may need.

The National Police and the Guardia CIvil belong to what is called ‘State Security Forces and Bodies’ and their functions are to promote citizen security, preventing disorders

and crimes, as well as the prosecu­ tion of these.

The functions of both bodies are similar, although not always the same, the initial difference is where they carry out their work.

The National Police is part of the Ministry of the Interior and occupies an important part of the Spanish ter­ ritory, with the exception of the Au­ tonomous Communities that have an Autonomous Police, such as Catalo­ nia (called Mossos de Esquadra) or the Basque Country (Ertzaintza).

Those known as ‘Municipal’ are the Local Police and are part of each City Council.

However, not all municipalities have Local Police, as it is a decision made by each of the municipal gov­ ernments.

The Local Police carry out their

function exclusively in the locality to which they belong and therefore their functions are limited to that area.

They must work with the National Police and the Guardia Civil.

So depending on where you live and what matter it is, you should call 091 (National Police), 092 (Local Po­ lice) or Guardia Civil 062, although a good alternative is to call the emer­ gency number 112 if it is an impor­ tant matter and they will refer you to the proper police.

Another option is to download the application for mobile phones ‘AlertCops’ which is also available in English, and puts you in contact with the appropriate police, and it is a useful tool for many cases in which you are a witness or victim of a pos­ sible crime.

A TRAGIC migrant family who perished crossing the Channel to the UK ‘had no choice.’

Construction worker Rasoul Iran­Nejad, 35, his wife Shiva Mohammad Panahi, 35, along with Anita, nine, and Armin, six, perished after being trapped in the cabin of a crammed makeshift fishing boat when it capsized in rough conditions, with winds of up to 47mph and five­ foot waves.

A text message that appears to be from Mrs Panahi to a family member on Saturday, October 24 said the fami­ ly “had no choice” but to cross the Channel, as to go the safer route by lorry “we might need more money that we don’t have.”

NATIONAL STATE OF ALARM

Questions & Answers Why has a national curfew been put in place and how will it help?

The National State of Alarm was announced on Sunday, October 25, and has been im­ plemented as a way of slow­ ing the spread of Covid­19 in Spain. The State of Alarm was approved so that a national curfew could be put in place.

It also gives local governments the ability to implement re­ gional specific restrictions for their areas.

Are flights still arriving to and leaving from Spain?

Flights are still coming in and out of Spain, however you can only travel into re­ gions that have not closed their regional borders. Cur­ rently, at the time of print, the only areas that are still accept­ ing non­essential travel are Mallorca and Galicia.

This will also be dependent on your country of origin and their travel restrictions.

The Canary Islands has an ex­ tension to the BOE meaning that tourists can travel to the Canary Islands, however trav­ ellers will be required to have a negative PCR test which must be taken no more than 72 hours prior to travelling.

Will I still be able to cele­ brate Christmas Day with my family?

The current national restric­ tions is a max of six people, unless they are from the same household. However, regional restrictions are in place in every one of the 17 regions of Spain and the limits on group meetings vary according to the region. For example, in An­ dalucia, groups of more than

Yes, however you must not be out on the streets within the curfew hours of 11pm­6am, or the altered hours according to your region.

Can I go to the bar with my friends?

Yes, however bars must be closed by 10.30pm to enable all public and staff to be home and off the streets by 11pm.

I want to return home for Christmas by car or ferry, can I still go?

At the moment the same rules apply as per the informa­ tion regarding travel. However, it is important to understand that the current restrictions can change locally and nationally at any time, therefore the infor­ mation available today will very likely be different by Christmas.

Does each region have the ability to change restrictions when it wants even though the State of Alarm runs until May? At this time, the regional governments can alter the re­ strictions within their bound­ aries any way they wish. They can also change the limitation of groups and people in public and private spaces. The only aspect, under the National State of Alarm that they cannot change, is the nationwide cur­ few.

However, it is important to stress that any and all local mea­ sures can change with minimum notice.

Furthermore, the National State of Alarm is being reviewed every 15 days even though it has been approved until May 9.

Therefore, decisions being taken at the national level can also change every two weeks.

Open to Immigrants CANADIANS are increasingly ‘accepting and supportive’ of immigrants and refugees, a new study has found.

A record high two­thirds of Canadians now reject the idea that immigration levels are too high, with this view strengthening across the country, reveals the study by polling firm Environics Insti­ tute.

In fact, despite a global pandemic, the majority of Canadians also believe “Canada needs more immi­

grants to increase its popula­ tion.”

The Focus Canada 2020 study revealed that Canadi­ ans have become more open, not less so.

“Over the past year, the Canadian public has become more accepting and support­ ive of immigrants and refugees, continuing a trend dating back several years, but to levels not recorded in more than four decades of Focus Canada surveys,” the report claims.

NEARLY 100,000 people are catching coronavirus every day as the pan­ demic reaches a “critical stage,” researchers warn.

A study carried out by Imperial College London estimates the num­ ber of infections is doubling every nine days, with researchers warning we are at a “critical stage.”

Authors say the pace of the epidemic is accelerating and something has to change.

Swab tests on more than 85,000 people across England have shown an increase in R and that coronavirus infections are growing nation­ wide.

During pregnancy the muscles within the abdomen are forced to move and separate to

make space for the baby, and they often take a while to recover resulting in a condition known as diastasis recti or separation of the abdominal muscles.

This can result in a post-pregnancy belly which women tend to think means they are overweight or their muscles need a workout, yet sit-ups and other abdominal exercises can in fact worsen typical problems such as back pain, digestive problems and even incontinence caused by a weakened pelvic floor.

New mums can check whether they are still suffering diastasis, Vicetta advised, by lying face up on a bed, bending their knees and raising their heads. If a gap appears in the abdomen, it’s time to see a physiotherapist who specialises in the condition for help.

“You need to know how to get out of bed, sit on a chair or pick something up from the floor. Physiotherapists teach all these things to help patients recover as quickly as possible,” the doctor explained.

The Future Arrives A SPORTS car that can trans­ form itself into an airplane in three minutes flew 1,500 feet in the air over Slovakia as part of a test flight on Thurs­ day, October 29, and the video of it is making the rounds of the internet.

The vehicle, named the Air­ Car, is the latest generation of a flying car that has been de­ veloped by Slovakian firm KleinVision.

The two­seat model weights 2,425lb and can carry an additional load of 440lb

per flight, the company said.

Powered by a BMW 1.6l en­ gine, the car­plane has an ef­ fective power output of 140HP and the estimated travel range of AirCar is 621 miles.

According to the develop­ ers, the car is suitable for self­ driven journeys or as a com­ mercial taxi service.

“The fifth generation flying car designed by Professor Ste­ fan Klein completed two 1,500 AGL flights at Piestany airport in Slovakia this week.

FLYING CAR: The AirCar is unveiled.

The model safely achieved two full airport patterns, in­ cluding two takeoffs and land­ ings,” an official release said.

No price details have been revealed for the vehicle yet.
