RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA has been named ‘The Best Tourist Destination On The Coast’ in the ninth Tourism Award of La Razón. Rincón de la Victoria was, on Friday, October 23, recognised as the best tourist destination on the coast in the ninth La Razón Tourism Award held in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Accepting the award from president of the Junta de Andalucía, the mayor of Rincón de la Victoria, Francisco Sala­ do thanked the people of La Razón for their efforts to make the area the best it can be. Speaking at the award ceremony, he said: “my goal as mayor is clear: I want Rincón de la Victoria to be a friendly city, where the people who live in it find everything to be happy. I have had the luck to be born and grow up in a town of humble, hard­working people, where the neighbours have al­ ways had something very present: from Rincón de la Victoria you are

born, but you also become one. Be­ cause we have always welcomed everyone who has wanted to make ours their city in which to grow and live.” The mayor also spoke about the challenges facing the tourism sector in the region in the wake of the coron­ avirus pandemic, but he said he feels hopeful that solutions can be found. He insisted “that we are going to re­ spond to the problems, to seek solu­ tions to a sector that is waging a real fight against this health crisis.” Currently 117,000 families or the al­ most 15,000 companies make a living from tourism in Malaga, a sector that generates €14.4 billion. Other winners on the day were Castilla La Mancha who collected the Interior Tourism Award, Sánlucar de Barrameda who received the Award for the Best Gastronomic Destination and Benahavís who scooped the prize for Best Golf Tourist Destination.

Man’s Solitary Challenge A  LOCAL man is raising awareness for prostate can­ cer by embarking on a gru­ elling mountaineering chal­ lenge. Next month, Basque­born Rafael Sánchez will travel from the Torre Del Mar Lighthouse to La Maroma on foot to raise awareness about prostate cancer. Living in Torre del Mar for 45 years, Sánchez aims to combine his passions for mountaineering and running to help others, by undertaking the gruelling solitary trek on November 15. A federated mountaineer with great experience, Sánchez, who works as head of communication for the Málaga­Axarquía Health Area, will scale the peak of La Maro­ ma, the highest in the province at 2,069 metres above sea level, leaving from

Sánchez hopes this chal­ lenge will encourage and give visibility to those suffering from prostate cancer. tating the way for them to ob­ tain more donations, more

volunteers and a larger budget for research.” The solitary route will take Sánchez through 42 kilome­ ters of mountains, passing through different municipali­ ties of Axarquía such as Vélez­ Málaga, Arenas, Sedella and Canillas de Aceituno. The protagonist of this ad­ venture also wants to pro­ mote the spectacular environ­ mental project of the Diputación de Málaga through the Gran Senda de Málaga, a path along which a large part

of this solitary sporting event will run and publicise the envi­ ronmental diversity that exists in the Axarquía region. Sánchez will depart from the Torre del Mar Lighthouse at 9am on November 15.

There will be breaks at the Río Seco, Arenas, Ermita de Sedella, Collado de la Monti­ cana, Tajo Volaero, and Colla­ do de la Gitana. Arrival is scheduled for 6pm in Canillas de Aceituno.
