CLIMBING A MOUNTAIN Credit: Moorcroft family

ON November 22, Michael Moor croft from Competa will walk up Mount Maroma in memory of his mother to raise funds for the Cude ca Hospice in Benalmadena to help them to continue their special kind of caring. Fran Moorcroft was a volunteer for Cudeca a few years ago and sadly died of cancer herself last year, so her son, Michael, wants to walk up the 2,000 metre Mount Maroma (which will take at least five hours up and three hours down), the nearest mountain to the village in memory of his Mum. He is also trying to get some sup porters to walk with him and one, Cindy Jones, another Competa resi dent plans to drive as far up as she can on her quad bike and then walk the last bit taking her Cudeca banner to the top. In Michael Moorcroft’s words: “My dear mum and dear to her two daughters and family in Germany and England, friend to many Fran Moorcroft, sadly passed away last

The late Fran Moorcroft.

year on her 77th birthday to can cer, a true rock star! “My mother was a supporter and active member of the Cudeca Hos pice. To continue in her legacy, I will be attempting to walk to the 2,069m summit of the almighty Mt Maroma in her honour, a first time challenge for me and I am currently in training aided by Kevin Deavin.” If you would like to join Michael Moorcroft and help him to the summit, they will be meeting at the Tourist Office in Competa at 9am. Then, they will drive over to Foga rate, their starting point. You will need your own transport or organ ise a car share. If you would like to take part or contribute in another way then call or WhatsApp Michael Moorcroft on 0044 7762 474988 or Cindy Jones on 665 156 467; you can also contact Esther Raez with the Com munication and Fundraising de partment of the Cudeca Hospice. All funds raised will go directly to the Cudeca Hospice.

Protecting water resource

WITH so many farmers con gregated on the Costa Tropi cal, one of the most important natural resources to protect is water which can be used for irrigation in the growing of fruit and vegetables. It is clearly important that sources of water are neither abused nor allowed to be pol luted and a recent meeting took place to create the Cen tral Board of Users of the Rivers Verde, Seco and Jate in order to agree statutes and regulations to govern the situa tion. It was held in the Casa de la Cultura in Almuñecar, under the chairmanship of José Manuel Fernández, who was head of the commission that was elected to draw up the proposed statutes, together

Representatives of the various communities attended. with the regulations of the Governing Board and the Irri gation Board. Representatives of 15 com munities (including a number from each of Almuñecar, Jete, Otívar and Lentegí) who need access to irrigation attended the meeting and having agreed terms, it remains only for the Board’s Environmental delega tion to give its approval to the

proposals, subject to the post ing of the information on the public noticeboards of the vari ous councils involved. This Board has been in the making for more than a year, but decisions were held up due to the State of Alarm surround ing the pandemic and then be cause there were some errors in the documents originally submitted.

This body will now represent the interests of all the farmers in the Rio Verde region and it will defend their interests in re spect of all matters concerned with agricultural irrigation. Once fully integrated, this Central Boards of Users will be come a legally recognised Pub lic Corporation attached to the Hydrographic Confederation of southern Spain, its territorial scope of action being the terri tory within the boundaries of

the hydrographic basin of the Rivers Verde, Seco and Jate. This should give some ele ment of comfort to those farm ers who need proper and regu

lar irrigation for their crops and it will hopefully discourage those who illegally remove wa ter from the rivers involved from doing so in the future.
