THE Balearic government is restricting movement in four Palma neighbourhoods to stem the spread of Covid-19. Regional Health minister Patricia Gomez announced the restriction yesterday, Wednesday September 9. It is one of the exceptional measures being implemented for 15 days starting at 10pm this coming Friday September 11 in Son Gotleu, Can Capes, Soledat Nord and Son Canals, which are among the city’s least affluent districts. Speaking at a press conference alongside Palma Mayor Jose Hila, Gomez highlighted the “high population density” in the four areas, and said it was impacting on the spread of the virus. She also clarified that the restrictions do not apply to essential reasons for moving around, like get-
ting to medical appointments, work or school or to care for the elderly, children or a dependent person. What the exceptional measures do mean for the neighbourhoods’ residents is not being allowed to go in and out of their district perimeter without a justified cause. Movement within their area is allowed as long as Covid-19 prevention measures are fully complied with, although the regional administration recommends residents remain in their homes as much as possible and limit their movements. Also among the raft of exceptional measures are limiting maximum capacity in businesses, shops and public services to 50 per cent and a closing time of 10pm. In addition they must set a specific time for giving priority service to over-65s.

Social gatherings are limited to five people if not from the same household, which includes wedding and religious services. Fiestas and festivities are prohibited. Also out for a fortnight are activity in gyms, sports centres, parks, gardens and children’s play areas. Driving schools and private training centres’ capacity becomes 50 per cent. The Balearic Health minister said the decision to impose the extra restrictions was intended to “to protect the population of this area above all, and therefore the population of the Balearics.”

AIR CORRIDOR HOPES THE Balearic government sees a ‘window of opportunity’ in the UK’s shift to a more targeted approach to travel restrictions. The regional administration said its Economic
Model, Tourism and Employment department is working with the Spanish government to establish safe air corridors with the UK after the British government’s announcement on Monday Sep-
tember 7 that it has modified its policy. It is now analysing separately the Covid-19 situation in countries’ mainland territories and islands. UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told the Commons that through the use of “more enhanced data” the government is able to “pinpoint risk” in islands, “providing increased flexibility to add or remove them - distinct from the mainland - as infection rates change.” As it stands the Balearics remain on the UK’s quarantine list due to the level of new cases of Covid-19. But the archipelago’s administration is hopeful that the UK’s change of strategy will be to the islands’ advantage once new infections rates drop. Negueruela, who has been in regular contact with the Spanish Secretary of State for Tourism Fernando Valdes in recent weeks to discuss issues like the UK’s decisions on travel restrictions, said this week’s announcement by the Boris Johnson administration is “good news” for the Balearics. “This was something we have been demanding this summer,” Negueruela pointed out. He also said the announcement made it very clear just how important it is to bring down the level of new Covid19 cases on the islands as soon as possible. “Now the first thing we have to do is to reduce our level of infections, although this decision by the British government allows us to view the horizon and start to prepare for 2021,” the regional minister commented.

Cold snap MALLORCA has had an abrupt taste of autumn this week, with torrential downpours and a sharp drop in temperatures. The so-called DANA, or cold snap, which swept in on Sunday night, dumped more than 120 litres of rain per square metre in Calvia on Monday September 7, according to State Meteorology Agency figures. Other parts of the south-west of the island also registered very high rainfall. The Balearic 112 emergency service reported 87 weather-related incidents over the day, the vast majority in Mallorca. Overflowing drains and water courses and flooded roads and basements were the main issues. The DANA set off a rockslide in Cala Llamp in Andratx. The giant stones which came hurtling down the hillside caused serious damage to what Spanish press reported was an elderly German resident’s property. The reports say he escaped injury because he had been out taking his dog for a walk at the time. The rockslide damaged two other homes in the same street. The heavy rain continued on Tuesday, the Balearic 112 emergency service reporting a further eight flooding-related incidents in Mallorca.

Influencers against covidiots INTERNET influencers are urging young people not to be covidiots in a new Balearic Island gover nment campaign to get the younger generation to follow health and safety regulations to prevent the spread of the virus. The ‘Nobody wants empty streets or to go backwards’ initiative stars Aida Martorell and Marcos White, both from Mallorca, who between them have more than five million followers on social media. The video features photographs and videos from their Instagram and Tik Tok accounts projected over them, while they warn viewers that “we have all relaxed and dodged measures at some time, but now

Illegal campers A BUNCH of young people got caught out camping illegally in the idyllic Cala Varques cove. Balearic government Environment agents and Manacor Local Police officers came across the unauthorised campsite on this virgin stretch of the island’s coast on Sunday September 6. They had gone back to check on the area where an illegal beach bar had been dismantled over the previous two days and cordoned off. The 18 campers staying on the beach have been reported to the authorities. Posting images of the campsite on Twitter, the Environment agency issued a reminder that camping outdoors without permission is not allowed and that beaches should be cleared at night.

ing up food and drink in Manacor’s Cala Varques cove for several years.
Safe destination JOINT STRATEGIES: The Balearic president told delegates that working together is essential for an “efficient reactivation” of tourism. THE Balearics need to recover their image as a safe destination to give tourism a chance of picking back up again on the islands in the short-term, the travel industry and politicians agree. Hotel group, airline and ferry company representatives and regional and local politicians taking part in the ‘Future strategy for the recovery of the tourism sector’ roundtable in Palma on Thursday September 3 also shared the view that now is the time to look at changes which promote quality over a product based on sun, beach
and boozing. In the opinion of Balearic government president Francina Armengol it is joint strategies which are essential for an “efficient reactivation” of tourism. She told delegates at the event organised by Exceltur and the AETIB Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency that working together is the best way forward to bring about the recovery of the sector from the devastating impact of the Covid-19 health crisis. The regional president took the opportunity to thank the archipelago’s
sector for “building safe and viable tourism,” which she said had marked out the path to follow in the coming months. She also pledged her administration would continue to listen to companies and sector workers, “taking on their needs, implementing current solutions and working towards the future. “The tourism industry is key for everything and for everyone,” Armengol added. “It is very important that it does not lose more muscle than it has already lost.”
Environment department agents supported by National and Local Police and the IBANET Balearic Nature Institute moved in on Friday September 4 to remove some of the stuff on the premises and to seal what it was not possible to take at the time. The following day Manacor Council went back to finish the job with the help of Environment agents. The regional Environment and Territory ministry reported that a Palma court had given legal authorisation for the bar closure on the basis of documentation provided by the Balearic government which set out the environmental and health risks of the facilities. A statement from the department explained that the judicial authorisation had been needed due to the fact the bar owner has a document from a notary certifying that the beach bar is his home, and a legal case has been going through the courts since May last year. The owner has refused to dismantle the bar three times, despite a regional government resolution issued in April 2019 adopting urgent provisional measures obliging him to do so and to stop the commercial activity. Environment said it had got to the stage where the bar closure was “urgent and necessary” due to the “serious environmental damage” in a location with Place of Community Interest status, and due to the “serious risk” to public health. “Not only has the tourist season finished for the beach bar, but the bar is definitively finished,” confidently commented Manacor mayor Miquel Oliver.

Generous gesture A MALLORCA nurse is doing his bit for a Balearic health service recruitment drive by generously offering his own home to colleagues looking to work on the island. “I’m offering a house to two nurses who want to come and reinforce Mallorca,” Manuel Gala posted on this twitter account. “The situation is very bad and renting is not cheap,” he said, adding just to be on the safe side, “this is not a joke.” Manuel told Spanish newspaper El Mundo he was prompted to help how he could as soon as he saw the Balearic authorities’ urgent callout to health professional across Spain for reinforcements for the islands’ hospitals and health centres. El Mundo reveals the 35-year-old has been a nurse for 11 years and spent nine of those working overseas. He told the newspaper that ever since he returned to his native Mallorca at the beginning of last year he has heard repeated complaints from his colleagues that health centres and hospitals are short staffed. “What I want is to give people an opportunity to come and work,” he said.

LIGHT ISSUE THE Mallorca government is installing lighting in Formentor’s Puig Fumat tunnel, the only one on the island without artificial illumination. Consell Mobility and Infrastructure councillor Ivan Sevillano said the works represent a response to complaints from both drivers and cyclists about a lack of light in the infrastructure. “The road presented a certain danger, and therefore it was urgent for us to take this action. This will solve the problem,” the

of 79 watts and eight of 57 watts in three single-phase circuits, and will take about two months to complete. The project will also equip the tunnel with a remote management device to monitor the status of the lights. This will communicate directly with the control room located at the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure headquarters. The 192-metre long tunnel excavated from the rock is located at the kilometre 13.6 mark of the Ma2210 road, which connects the Port of Pollensa with the Cape of Formentor.

Upgrades necessary WORKS are underway to implement some necessary upgrades to the centuries old building housing the Tramuntana mountains visitors centre. The IBANAT Balearic Nature Institute has contracted a company to carry out a series of improvements to the building over the coming month. These include revising where the contention wall joins the façade to check and repair the insulation, redirecting the drainage, replacing the roofing material and repairing areas affected by damp. A traditional stone house dating all the way back to the 16th century, in past times the building served as accommodation for peasant farmers. Last year getting on for 18,000 visitors dropped into the centre, of which more than 3,600 took a look round the permanent exhibition.
Balearics top jobless rise THE Balearics registered the biggest August increase in unemployment of any region in Spain. The islands ended the month with an additional 2,206 people out of work,
according to figures released this week by the Employment Ministry. This represented a rise of 3.08 per cent on July and put the total jobless figure at 73,753. Compared to the same month last year, unemployment on the islands is a whopping 90 per cent higher. There are 34,912 more people without a job than in August 2019. The latest figure for the number of workers registered with social security is 513,335, 12.85 per cent less than this time last year.

By Damon Mitchell IN the current times of harsh reality EWN was lucky enough to delve into the vivid imagination of an expat writer and one half of the creative team behind the fantasy fiction or ‘Arctic Gothic Horror’ novel ‘The Reeking Hegs,’ who goes by the nom de plume Pete Peru. Pete has been a resident in Spain since 1989 and is currently living in Sant Cugat, near Barcelona. The primary schoolchildren that he teaches at the Europa International School of Barcelona might be shocked to discover the fantastic journeys he has taken in his life which look to serve as inspiration for his first published book. Pete’s writing of ‘The Reeking Hegs’ began when he returned from a trip around South America, hence the ‘Peru’ in his pseudonym. The name was given to him by his cowriter Lord Tupelo, or Bob, when they began an inventive way to put togeth-

point we tried to have it published, but with no success.” The two lost touch over the years and it wasn’t until a couple of years ago when Pete discovered the folder whilst tidying up dur-

but had not spoken to Bob for so long and was struggling to find him.” In an odd twist of fate, Pete finally managed to find him in the place where all of us may logically start... through a friend that Bob played table tennis with! The two finally saw their imaginative piece of work come together and it has now been released on Amazon both in a worldwide digital format and paperback in the States. Community rallies round to help the homeless COMMUNITY response to Project Costa’s ambitious bid to create a halfway house and soup kitchen for the homeless in the region has been incredible. Within days of an appeal for support in Euro Weekly News, floods of donations have been received, including the amazing gift of a fully equipped industrial kitchen from local business, Yorkshire Linen. “It has been fantastic, we have been so busy collecting donations over the
last few days,” said project founder, Arne Soeten. “On Sunday (September 6) we were given some kitchen gear and then of course we have been given a whole kitchen which we will be fitting at our halfway house in Benitachell, huge thanks to Yorkshire Linen.” This is in addition to the clean clothes for men, women and children as well as new underwear and donations, collected the previous weekend when volunteers from the non-religious and non-prof-

The objective of Project Costa is to dress and feed the less fortunate on the Costa Blanca, as well as offering a rehabilitation programme for up to three people at a time in the half way home currently being refurbished. The team - Arne, Matty, Steven, Inge and Caroline - want to get alcoholics and drug addicts off the streets and back into society, with some of them
having first-hand experience of being homeless. “We want to start by feeding the homeless, giving out clothes and sleeping bags. As we get to know them, we will be able to see who wants a second chance at life and we will help them get back into society.” Assisting the team is Stephan, a homeless man who has become a familiar face in Albir, along with his white dog carried about in his adapted bicycle. “We have made con-
tact with Stephan who will show us around Albir and Altea and help us meet with people living on the streets. “We are taking it one day at a time to reach our goal, but things are moving very fast. It’s really encouraging,” said Arne. Meanwhile, volunteer Steven Barnes, a chef and former restaurant owner from Yorkshire, is busy making plans for the mountain of meals he will be preparing from Project Costa’s new kitchen. And he has a wealth of experience of both feeding the homeless and living on the streets, having cooked 200 meals three times a week for the less fortunate in Rome. Steve is proof of how easy it is to end up homeless after his own business fell victim to the credit crunch and went into liquidation while living in Rome. It was then he set himself
the challenge of getting homeless people off the streets and started volunteer group, Project Rome. “There are thousands of people living on the streets in Rome, it is a bit different here to the Costa Blanca, but the concept is the same. “Once we are up and running, I really want the public to be involved. I’d like people to come and taste the nutritional food I will be preparing and give their feedback.” As well as kitchen equipment, clothes, food and sleeping bags are still needed to ensure Project Costa can reach as many people as possible. WITH children spending as much as six hours a day on smartphones and other digital devices, Specsavers Ópticas is encouraging students to have their eyes tested before they return to school following months of lockdown learning. It is estimated that we’ve logged an extra five billion hours online globally since our daily lives went virtual due to the pandemic, with the increased screen time having an impact on eye health. In fact, in a Specsavers’ survey, 87 per cent of parents have said they are concerned about their children spending too much time in front of screens, but they are unsure on how often their child should be taking a break from their devices, with more than a quarter (28 per cent) thinking it should be every hour. Martin Blake, store director of Specsavers Ópticas Santa Ponsa says: “Often children do not take adequate breaks from their screens, which can cause eye strain and potentially damage their eye health, so they may notice differences in their vision when they go back to full-time education in school.” Eye strain Schools are investing in technological devices, such as tablets and laptops, to aid learning and ensure that all students can continue their education in the case of a return to

Martin says: “Eyes can often become strained when focusing on screens for a long period which, while it is not usually serious, can be particularly uncomfortable. “Similarly, if children’s eyes are fixated on a single object for a long period of time, such as a white board, this can also cause strain. Symptoms to look out for include eye discomfort, headaches, sore or tired eyes, difficulty focusing, dry eyes, blurred or double vision, and increased sensitivity to light.” Follow the 20:6:20 rule Martin therefore advises students to follow the 20:6:20 rule, getting children to look up/away from their screen and/or board every 20 minutes at something six metres away for at least 20 seconds, as this helps relax the eye muscles. IT looks like the days are numbered for the 902 premium rate customer information and service lines. The Consumer Ministry is looking at banning numbers with the prefix, which are used by numerous telephone services. “We are starting the process for the prohibition of 902, which is going to prohibit the use of these customer service numbers
because they increase working families’ bills when they are exercising their right to complain,� Consumer Minister Alberto Garzon said in an interview with Canal Sur radio on Friday September 4. The aim is to put an end to what the minister said was a widespread abuse by companies, which has been made worse by lockdown and the Covid-19 pandemic as people have been unable
to make enquiries or sort out problems face-to-face and have had to resort to the 902 numbers. The Consumer Ministry is now preparing a modification to the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users to prevent companies from applying prices which exceed the usual tariffs for a landline or standard mobile phone call for their customer service lines, according to Spanish press.

We usually spend some time between January and June in Spain. With the new ruling we will obvious ly not be able to exceed 90 days during that period. In addition we usually return in early September for about six weeks. Your article states that we have to be out of Spain (I assume this also means all of the Schen gen area?) for 90 days before we can return, so our earliest return date would be in October. First, the tourist stay of 90 days in a 180 YOU AND THE LAW day period is not a IN SPAIN ‘new ruling.’ It is an EU regulation which has been in effect for some years. The confusion arose because various countries, includ ing Spain, did not strictly enforce it. Yes, your assump tions are correct. You must remain outside Spain for 90 days. And you must not stay in any European Union country except your country of residence.

Puro Beach will return THE fire which destroyed La guna Village in Estepona has seen at least 200 people out of work and the mayor of the town promising to speed up approval for its rebuilding. The owner of one property on the site, Puro Beach Club, young Andalucian entrepre neur Rosauro Varo is said to be worth at least €140 mil lion following sales of Pepe phone and 2,000 licences to Cabify. Costa Coffee cuts
POPULAR BRAND: Trade is returning, but takings are definitely down. COSTA COFFEE owned by the Coca-Cola group is probably the most popular of the coffee café brands in the UK, but it is suffering and is considering shedding around 1,650 jobs from its 2,700 stores of which 1,100 are franchises. The company closed almost all of its outlets for six weeks during the lockdown and so far 300 remain closed, but with the downturn in footfall caused by fewer shoppers and office workers, takings are definitely down. Throughout the pandemic, Costa has taken action to pro vide, where possible, financial support and to look after em ployees and while stores were closed, all team members were put on the furlough scheme provided by the gov ernment, with their salary topped up by Costa to 100 per cent for 12 weeks.
It agrees that trade is re turning, helped by the gov ernment’s VAT reduction, which Costa passed on to customers in full, and the re cent ‘Eat Out To Help Out’ Scheme, but there remain high levels of uncertainty as to when trade will recover to preCovid levels. Costa claims that it has made significant investments in safely accelerating the re opening of stores, ensuring they are safe for customers and team members and made the difficult decision to freeze all pay increases within the Support Centre and cut all nonessential expenditure. Managing Director Neil Lake said following the announce ment, “Today’s announce ment to our store teams was an extremely difficult decision to make. Our baristas are the heart of the Costa business and I am truly sorry that many now face uncertainty follow ing today’s news.”
Xanadú for sale AS previously reported, British developer Intu Properties has been placed into Administration (a form of bankruptcy) and as expected, liquidator KPMG has instructed a Spanish agency to try to find a buyer for its 50 per stake in Madrid shopping centre Xanadú. It was as recently as 2017 that Intu purchased the centre for €530 million and then quickly sold half to Nuveen Real Estate Fund and last year it managed to sell its Zaragoza shopping centre and pulled out of a planned development in Torremolinos.
BUSINESS EXTRA Downgraded MOODYS rating agency has downgraded Spanish company ProSil Acquisition SA which trades in non-performing loans (NPL). Stronger consumer protection and lack of activity in courts due to the pandemic suggests that income for 2020 will see a significant fall.
Energy acquisition CENTRICA which owns British Gas has announced that it has purchased the 112,000 residential customer base of not for profit energy supplier Robin Hood Energy Ltd which is owned by Nottingham City Council for an undisclosed sum.

It’s really not their fault
WE really shouldn’t be blaming the immigrants for pouring across the channel in their droves. It’s really not their fault. If you were sitting in a muddy foreign field, rain dripping on your head through the holes in your tatty tarpaulin ceiling and someone showed you a photo of the luxury hotel room you could be occupying by crossing a mere 20 odd miles of fairly safe water, wouldn’t you give it a go? I know I would. The irony is that the photos and reports they receive are all true. Many of those who have ‘made it,’ actually are sitting in comfortable, free hotel rooms with telly and ensuite bathrooms. Recently I watched Alan Boulton interviewing an ex border control chief. ‘What actually happens to the majority of these people when they are picked up’ he asked? ‘Well,’ the ex-chief explained. ‘Ultimately they are all taken somewhere to be processed; we take their particulars and fingerprints and then let them go’! Apparently, in an act of naivety that almost defies the imagination, they are subsequently instructed to ‘report back in a couple of weeks’! ‘And what percentage com-

Legal aid resources to lawyers must also be severely curtailed. These ‘immigrant chasing’ sharks are a huge drain on tax
payers’ money and are a large part of the problem. The message that goes back across the channel has to change. It simply cannot appear to offer desperate people a kind of utopian Shangri-La, with free legal aid to explore a multitude of loopholes in a system that already resembles a terminally perforated colander. For heaven’s sake someone get a grip. The UK is rapidly losing control and when it hits the fan, don’t look to the likes of Gary Lineker to solve the problem - it just ain’t going to happen. Delighted to see the awful Kay Burley’s new show being slated by the critics. This bitchy egotistical woman, who laughingly sees herself as a ‘probing’ reporter, is nothing more than a nasty bitter individual who, if she wasn’t a major shareholder, would have been put out to graze by SKY news years ago. Constructive noises issuing from the mouth of Tim Davies the new Director General of the BBC. Let’s just see if he puts his money anywhere in its vicinity. For example; If you want to spring clean the house, you do not aimlessly wander around and start cleaning. You have the idea (the thought), followed by the
feeling and then take action. Sometimes we ‘feel’ like doing something, and other times, we don’t. Either way, it is produced by either a thought or a feeling. Our emotions are what create our manifestations. The two most important emotions to ensure you manifest your desires are Passion and Excitement. Take a look back at a time in your life, where you felt genuine passion and excitement. It could have been with regards to a new job, a promotion or the thought of having a child. You may not have been
aware, but the moment you felt that genuine passion and excitement, you were visualising the event and by visualising, you were manifesting the thought and feeling into an experience. The fact that 3 per cent of the population earn approximately 97 per cent of all income, isn’t down to luck. It is down to the fact that they believe and live by the Law Of Attraction. Many people live their lives, the way society tells them to. We become a creature of habit, comparing ourselves to people around us. By doing this, we live our lives with limit-
ed beliefs, therefore, creating a limited lifestyle. One way to create a limitless life is affirmations. Affirmations are a short statement, that you repeat all day, every day, but with feeling. For example; If you have a bad ‘feeling’ towards money, then the law is to create a further lack of money. However, by using an affirmation such as, ‘money comes to me easily and frequently,’ this can change. It is important to note that but just repeating the words, nothing will change. You have to FEEL and BELIEVE in what you
are saying. This particular affirmation is one I put to the test. I even went a step further and created a cheque for a specific amount. I held that cheque in my hand, every night before I went to bed and visualised receiving it. I created the feeling, the thought and the visualisation. Within a week, I received the exact amount I’d asked for. Whilst this may seem far fetched for some, that is because you live with limited beliefs. Why not give it a try yourself? What do you have to lose?

HEARTBREAKING DEAR Euro Weekly News, It was so upsetting to hear of the two hugely destructive fires in the Costa del Sol, Sisu and Laguna Village. It is the last thing these business owners need at such a bad time for the tourist industry on the coast. The pictures of the charred building remains were heartbreaking. I really hope the community will come together and create some kind of benefit for them, if not to help them with their losses then just to show that they have some support. I don’t know if that kind of thing happens in Spain but in Portland, where I am originally from, that is the kind of thing that we would do. AIR bridges, red lists and the Great British quarantine debate. What on earth is going on? Country in, country out, country back in again. No wonder holidaymakers are tearing their hair out with confusion. After UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s comments on British TV last week, travellers already in Portugal started panic buying flights to get them back as soon as possible, his vague replies, when questioned about an imminent quarantine decision, left them second-guessing Parliaments decisions. Then, what happens, they leave it alone, well kind of. They left it for travellers to England and Northern Ireland, but Scotland and Wales decided to make their own decision and lower the drawbridge on the air bridge, they put a quarantine in place for those coming from Portugal. Now holidaymakers or those who wish to return to second homes or families are living in an added fear or confusion if they too will be put under this strain and uncertainty. The Scots were already hoping for the quarantine to be lifted between them and holiday favourite, Spain, but in adding Portugal to a red list the chances of that happening are slim to none. Sure, people understand that as Covid figures rise in each or any country there is a fear of transmission between countries. Should people be able to make up their own minds about travelling? Especially if it puts their livelihood or even mental state at risk. The news of a testing facility at Heathrow sitting unused was a revelation, who knew? If that was a way of allowing you in without quarantine you can be sure that everybody would be heading there, wouldn’t they?

Must I say I have missed reading about the great help they gave families during the first parts of the virus and the initial shock of isolation. I totally understand why they have made a comeback, families are still in need. My wife and I often take care packages to our local food bank when able and it is upsetting to see young children waiting for their next meal. After the impact the virus has had on employment I am sure there must be even more families going without than before, such a shame, I am happy they will get some help from these magnificent girls. England’s ‘Drab’ Nations League Draw with Denmark ENGLAND were held to a 0-0 draw by Denmark in an uninspiring Nations League match at the Parken Stadium on Tuesday as Gareth Southgate’s side concluded a troubled international break. Kalvin Phillips and Conor Coady made their England debuts as Gareth Southgate’s men drew 0-0 in Tuesday’s Nations League clash against Denmark. England falls behind Belgium in the Nations League group, but a more pressing concern is whether England is falling behind the other major nations in terms of its approach. This was the major question raised from a mostly drab 0-0 draw with Denmark last night. It doesn’t so much feel like Southgate is experimenting, as trying to work out his best team, his most talented players, especially his best midfield choice. On close examination of the match, it looks like he is no closer to a solution, however. There are genuine concerns about the squad, not least regarding the cautious mindset of the line-ups, and some of the selections. Will Southgate will put out a team that actually makes this hugely talented squad any way better than the sum of their parts? Al-
though the starting central duo of Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice was predictably pedestrian, it might have worked if there was a real playmaker in front of them. Phil Foden was even more conspicuous by his absence in that regard, but Southgate does have other options, he eventually brought two of them on - Jack Grealish and Mason Mount. Kane fancies himself as more of a No 10 than a striker, which made it all the more curious that he spent so much of the game so far forward. That had the effect of pushing Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho further wide, to occasionally get in the way of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier. Those very names raise the question of why he selected three right-backs but no left-back? Asked about criticism of Southgate’s tactics, Kane replied: “I think as England manager, you’re always going to come under certain scrutiny at times but, look, we’re a strong group, we know what we’re aiming towards. The only positives for England from the two games recently played was the fact that they return home unbeaten, after having given debuts to four more players in last night’s match.
