RESTRICTIONS RETURN THE growing number of coronavirus outbreaks in Spain has led officials to take measures that will have a huge impact on businesses throughout the country. Last Friday, August 14 according to El País, Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa announced that all establishments, such as bars and restaurants would have to close at 1am, with no new patrons allowed to enter from midnight onwards. And nightclubs, discos and similar establishments have been ordered to close for the foreseeable future. Another measure announced by Illa was a blanket ban across Spain of smoking in public if a two-metre distance cannot be maintained between a smoker and other people. Illa also said that bars and restaurants would need to guarantee a minimum safe distance of 1.5 metres between patrons at the bar and when they are eating at a table. The maximum number of diners will be limited to 10 at a table or gathering. The new measures were announced after Euro Weekly News was accused of scaremongering last week after it carried a report in good faith on the EWN website regarding Spain’s Covid-19 plans for the immediate future should the rise of new cases continue to escalate.

Ronaldo spotted in Mallorca FOOTBALL mega star Cristiano Ronaldo was spotted in Deia at the weekend, according to Spanish press. The Juventus player was reportedly taking a few days’ break at a luxury hotel in the picturesque corner of the island with family and friends as part of a summer getaway, which also saw the group cruising off the shore edging the Tramuntana mountains on his private yacht. Images posted on Ronaldo’s social media show him relaxing on board with his other half Georgina Rodriguez and showing off his athletic prowess, diving down to a depth of 14 metres.

The report, which said that Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was set to lockdown Spain once again from Friday, September 18, was published after a chance meeting with a freelance reporter and two gentleman who identified themselves as government bodies. Government officials later challenged the veracity of the report, but would not say what was wrong with it, choosing no further comment as a reply. As a result of that report, EWN also found itself at the sharp end of a concerted social media attack. People insisted that it was ‘fake news’ that would exacerbate problems already making life difficult for business owners. The attacks were made both professionally and personally to members of staff. We at EWN strive for accuracy at all times and share people’s anger and frustration, especially if we ourselves are misinformed, particularly in these rapidly changing and extremely distressing times. That said, we would be failing in our duty of care to our readers if we were to underplay the seriousness
of the pandemic in Spain. It is far from over. Health Minister Illa was quoted in the El País report as saying: ‘There has been a growing number of outbreaks in recent weeks.’ Illa was speaking to journalists after having held an emergency meeting with health officials from Spain’s regions, which have been in charge of their own coronavirus measures ever since the State of Alarm, implemented by the central government back in March, came to an end. His press conference was held after the latest figures released by the Health Ministry last Thursday showed a worsening situation. Spain’s regions reported a total of 2,953 new Covid19 infections detected in the previous 24 hours, and added a total of 7,550 confirmed cases from previous dates. Not since the worst moments of the crisis in Spain, back in April, have infection rates been so high. We have to work together in unity to ensure the continuation of our lives in Spain. IN a devastating blow to the Mallorca tourism sector, all the main German tour operators cancelled package holidays to the Balearic Islands, the DRV German Tourism Association announced on Saturday. The move came after the German government issued a warning on Friday against non-essential travel for the whole of Spain, except the Canary Islands, due to an increase in Covid-19 cases. A statement from the tourism association described it as “normal procedure” for a travel firm to cancel organised trips if a government advises against going to a region due to the pandemic situation. The cancellations will be announced on a weekly basis, allowing for a monitoring of the situation on the islands and proportionate action. According to DRV there were some 30,000 German package holiday tourists in the Balearics. Travel firm TUI had already announced it would enable its customers holidaying in Spain to return home early and would allow those due to travel to the country

He also expressed the hope that it would be possible to establish a safe travel corridor with the UK. “We remain a safe destination,” he insisted. Negueruela did however admit that “it will be a very atypical season, of opening and closing according to how the main markets are operating in respect to us.”

Businesses demand help BUSINESSES forced to close on Magaluf’s Punta Ballena party strip have demanded assistance from local and regional administrations. The Calvia Business Owner and Employee Association staged a protest in front of Calvia Town Hall on Monday morning, calling for financial measures to help them given they are currently unable to open their doors. The regional administration ordered the shutdown of establishments on the strip on July 15 to put a stop to booze-fuelled misbehaviour and revellers ignoring Covid19 infection prevention recommendations. The protestors waved placards with messages like ‘We are contributors, not delinquents,’ ‘Stop the persecution,’ ‘If Covid doesn’t kill us hunger will,’ and ‘We have the right to work.’

Benidorm-bashing and fake news AT the beginning of August the UK’s Daily Express carried this clickbait headline: ‘Brits ‘scared to go out’ as local beach resorts turn into ‘Benidorm on steroids’.’ It was a report about large crowds converging on Cornish resorts, and the apprehension locals felt about huge influxes of strangers. The paper said: ‘Speaking to the BBC Claire Harris, a 37year-old St Ives’ resident, said she’d banned her children from the town’s harbour and main shopping areas due to the number of people. She claimed the influx had left her “too scared to go food shopping” for fear of picking up the virus.’ The report itself contained no mention WHATSOVER of the popular Spanish resort, so why was the word ‘Benidorm’ used in the headline and intro in such a gratuitously offensive manner?
‘boycott EWN’ t-shirts and face masks! The idea that a paper would deliberately print fake news to harm the economy of a country in which it operates is beyond ludicrous. If fury has to be expressed - and I really believe that it does - it should be directed at the bureaucrats who, right now are playing us like fiddles by arbitrarily introducing new Covid-19 regulations, and insisting on moving the goalposts every few hours or so. This sort of game playing has in the past and will continue in the future to perplex both journalists and the public. Confusing briefings by government officials can only result in the inadvertent spread of misinformation at a time when clarity is most needed. All this confusion has to end soon if any shred of sanity is to be rescued from the wreckage of 2020.

Heaven knows there are thousands who care passionately enough about the manner in which it is portrayed to challenge this sort of negative reporting. I know that such people exist because I am one of them, and on numerous occasions have
THE Balearic government has unveiled measures aimed at rebooting local trade in the islands’ towns. Regional government Vice-President and Energy Transition and Productive regional minister Juan Pedro Yllanes explained the plan was principally promoting the creation of so-called ‘Open Sky’ commercial centres. The term refers to the concept of combining private and public initiatives which are aimed at stimulating trade, but also at gaining the custom of local consumers. The main objective, Yllanes said, “is to deal with the economic effects of the Covid-19 health crisis which the trade sector is suffering, and more specifically, local small traders.” According to the Vice-President the involvement of municipal councils is essential in achieving this goal. The plan includes up to 10 agreements on economic and commercial stimulation initiatives in town centres and for setting up Open Skies this year. Inca became the first municipality to get on board, signing an agreement in July. THE number of jobless in Palma is around 70 per cent higher than this time last year, according to the latest PalmaActiva figures. The city council’s local development agency said August began with 30,608 registered unemployed in Palma, which represented a miniscule 0.1 per cent dip in relation to June, but an increase of 71.3 per cent, or 12,740 more jobless, on 12 months earlier. PalmaActiva put the city’s unemployment total down to the ERTE temporary suspensions of job contracts remaining in place. The agency’s report on Palma’s labour market also revealed that 16,606 of the individuals out of work in the island capital by the end of July were women, just over 67 per cent more than in the same month of 2019, and 14,002 were men, an inter-annual increase of nearly 76.7 per cent.

Businesses dismayed M A L L O R C A’ S h o t e l s a n d b u s i n e s s e s re a c t e d w i t h dismay to the German gover nment’s decision to include the Balearic Islands on its list of Covid-19 risk zones. Berlin issued a warning on Friday against all but non-essential travel to the whole of Spain, excluding only the Canary Islands, due to a surge in new cases of the virus in recent weeks. Germany is Mallorca’s most important tourism market, and the move will have an “immediate impact” on the island’s sector, affirmed FEHM Mallorca Business Federation president Maria Frontera. The FEHM head predicted hardly any bookings, stressing how desperately disappointing the German travel warning was “after all the efforts which have been made by the hotel owners and agents in the tourist chain to activate a minimum of the tourist activity in the Balearics.” Frontera also pointed out that

Blanket warning unnecessary BERLIN’S recommendation against non-essential travel to the Balearics should only apply to certain areas of Mallorca, a TUI Group executive told German press. In comments to the Rheinische Post on the German government’s announcement it has included the whole archipelago in its travel warning on Spain due to a surge in Covid-19 cases, the tour operator’s Director of Corporate and External Affairs Thomas Ellerbeck said the move was regrettable. In his opinion it “would have been better” to have limited the warning to zones like “Palma, Magaluf or other places with more cases.” Ellerbeck told the newspaper that most tourists are “responsible” and comply with health regulations. As it stands TUI has cancelled all its package holidays to the Balearics up until August 24.

New wheels SANTANYI’S Local Police force has been out on patrol in a new set of wheels, a multifunctional Dacia Duster. The council said it was able to finance the acquisition of the €23,000 thanks to the Mallorca government’s Works and Services Plan. Santanyi mayor Maria Pons expressed her delight at adding a new vehicle to the municipal police fleet. Pons said it was needed “in order to provide a better service to citizens. “We have a very extensive municipality, which requires the security forces being well-equipped,” she said. “We hope this allows us to offer an even better and more efficient service.”

Change of plan Thinking ahead BETTER: The Magaluf plot is “more accessible and suitable for ITV activity,” according to the Mallorca government.
THERE has been a change of plan on the location of a mobile ITV station in Mallorca. Instead of constructing the station on a plot in Peguera, the idea now is to use land in the Magaluf area away from any residential zone, the Mallorca island government reported. Peguera residents’ associations had expressed their opposition to the original plans on
the grounds it would mean more traffic, noise and pollution in their area. A Consell de Mallorca press statement says the island administration had been working with Calvia Council on the new location for the station aimed at clearing a major backlog of appointments stemming from the Covid-19 crisis lockdown. It describes the plot,

reached by one of the Cami de Cala roundabouts, as “more accessible and suitable for ITV activity.” It also says the change of location will mean the mobile station will be up and running in two months, a month earlier than if it were going to be in Peguera. Ultimately the land will become a municipal car-park, the Consell explained.

MANACOR is already thinking ahead to the next year’s holiday season. The local council has now started work on a campaign aimed at attracting visitors to the locality in summer 2021. Local Tourism councillor Maria Antonia Truyols has presented a new promotional video portraying Manacor as an ideal choice in the ‘new normal’ created by the Covid-19 pandemic, which she explained is going out on social media and on national and international platforms. It is also being shown in tourist offices throughout the Balearics with a view to attracting visitors from other islands, the councillor said. Featuring aerial shots of the locality, the video boasts the coastline is unspoilt, natural and unique. It also features a young couple enjoying the beaches, and reminds visitors to social distance and to pick up all their rubbish. “Mallorca is the island of calm,” it goes on, “and in Manacor you will find a haven of peace, silence and serenity.”

Greener buildings THE Spanish government has approved a €7.1 million investment in the Balearic Islands under its plan for making buildings more energy efficient. Balearic government Vice-President and Energy Transition and Productive Sectors regional minister Juan Pedro Yllanes explained the investment will be for funding improvements to the energy efficiency of buildings constructed before 2007. The subsidies will cover up to 35 per cent of the cost of actions like changing thermal insulation, replacing old boilers for renewable options like solar power and improving lighting efficiency. According to Yllanes 60 per cent of buildings on the islands are not complying with energy regulations. The investments will “enable another step towards

Justice for tortured cat A CAMPAIGN is demanding justice for the feral cat which was tortured to death in Manacor. Tens of thousands have signed the ‘Justicia para Grisito’ petition on the Change.org platform, which calls for a change to the penal code and improvements to municipal by-laws, and for the maximum legal sentence to be applied in the case. “His death cannot have been in vain… but the beginning of a change,” the organisers write. They describe the cat as having been part of the Manacor landscape, “whose only crime was to live on the street and find a way to live as best he could.” They go on to say that the people of Manacor were appalled by what happened to the animal, but express the hope that its suffering will help other streets cats through legal change. Police have arrested two youngsters on animal cruelty charges for the horrific torture of the cat on a Manacor street in the early hours of August 8. Its desperate cries alerted local residents, who informed the police. Witnesses reported they had seen four young people doing unspeakably cruel things to the creature, leaving it dead. The police investigation remains open to try and identify the two other individuals.

Brave and big-hearted Oscar THE 11-year-old from Denia is walking the Camino de Santiago - more than 300 kilometres - with eversupportive mum Niamh, to raise as much cash as possible for a sensory garden at the La Xara Occupational and Day Centre. “Two years ago, when Oscar was nine years old, he asked if I would take him on a journey. He asked if he could walk the Camino Santiago,” said Niamh, adding: “That’s not just like going for any old walk, it’s a pilgrimage!” In October 2018 and October 2019 determined Oscar covered 470kms of his incredible challenge. The plan was that in October 2020 Oscar would tackle the final 300-plus kilometres of the camino from Leon to Santiago de Compostela. “However, as we all know, 2020 hasn’t quite gone to plan,” explained mum-of-three Niamh, a well-known singer on the Costa Blanca. To avoid Oscar missing more school after months of lockdown, mum and son hatched ‘a crazier plan.’ Oscar will walk his final 300km of the Camino Santiago through the tricky tracks and trails of Galicia in the very early mornings of August, having started his trek on Friday, August 14. Niamh said: “Oscar’s fundraiser has been incredible. Truly heartwarming. We really can’t thank you all enough. And donations continue to fly in. It’s not too late. But, right now, the focus of our mum/son duo must be to simply walk. “To cover 300km in less than two weeks. To keep each other positive and to take time to bond further and deeply appreci-

Marihuana sales arrests GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested four young Brits for growing marihuana and selling the drug to tourists in Magaluf and Santa Ponsa, according to Spanish press. Officers reportedly surprised three of them at an old plant nursery in Santa Ponsa where they were cultivating the drug. The Guardia seized 30 plants which were flowering and a further 20 already in the process of being dried which were inside a wooden hut on the same land, along with two kilos of buds. It was further reported that one of the suspects brandished a large knife at officers, but stopped when he realised he was cornered. Subsequent searches of two properties in Son Ferrer and Palma Nova resulted in the discovery of another 200 grammes of marihuana buds, precision scales and items used to manipulate drugs and €3,000 in cash. Officers also seized a top-of-the-range vehicle. The raids led to a fourth arrest, allegedly the individual responsible for looking after and preparing the drugs for sale in one of the properties.

Pickpockets stole millions A GANG of pickpockets busted in Palma stole some €12.5 million over the last decade or so, National Police reckon. The investigation into what is considered one of the biggest criminal networks of its kind in Europe saw raids on 20 properties in the city on Tuesday and 34 suspected members arrested, 14 of them women. Officers seized more than 300 items, like mobiles, sunglasses and perfume. Police first launched the investigation due to an increase in reports of thefts of wallets, backpacks, credit cards and mobile phones in Mallorca’s main tourist zones, including Playa de Palma, the cathedral, the Bellver castle, Palma Old Town, Alcudia port, Peguera, Port d’Andratx, Soller Port, Valldemossa and Cala Rajada, as well as on bus lines. At times they also used minors to do the thieving. Investigators believe the network carried out more than 300 robberies in Mallorca just over the last three months. Restaurant takings way down THE Mallorca small and medium-sized business association says takings for the island’s restaurants are way down on last year. In a statement published this week, the president of the restaurant business arm of the PIMEM association, Eugenia Cusi, reported that 15 per cent of Mallorca’s dining establishments had not opened at all in July, that those which are open for business are at just 65 per cent, while the money coming in is 51 per cent less than last year. Cusi pointed out these “bad figures” are for high season, and therefore the “best time” of the year for Mallorca’s restaurant sector. The months ahead could therefore
be “dramatic” for the sector, she warned. OVER the years the Costa del Sol has been home to many entertainers and EWN was lucky enough to speak exclusively to Sheena Cochrane who lives in Mijas Costa and was a professional dancer who managed to travel the world performing with some massive names in the process. Sheena has released a book named ‘Exit Stage right’ which is available as an e-book on Kindle and paperback on Amazon. “I began dancing when my mother suggested I do something to use up my excess energy. I wasn’t the best at school and decided maybe I could make my future from dancing. “I was a day student at the Royal Ballet but realising that there were many more girls better than me, I decided that I would be better using my talent as a means to travel the world.” And so, she did, she travelled to the Middle East, the Far East, the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico, South America and many more. From there Sheena became one of the famous 60’s Tiller Girls and would ap-

Whilst there she crossed paths with people such as Cary Grant, Jerry Lewis, Liberace, Shirley MacLaine, Cher, Tony Bennett, Paul Anka, to name but a few. She also appeared as an extra in the film ‘Chisum’ with John Wayne, which was filmed in Durango, Mexico. When asked why she gave up such an exciting lifestyle she said “It’s a young profession and I gave up professional dancing in 1981. I was given the option of becoming a dance teacher, but I enjoyed dancing more than teaching.” Would she suggest dancing for the younger generation? “Even if not as a profession, dancing gives you posture and is amazing overall exercise for the body.”

Two week Update THERE was little to move the pound over the last couple of weeks; investors appear to be taking the ecostats with a pinch of salt. The purchasing managers’ indices for manufacturing and services were both higher on the month at 53.3 and 56.5. The Bank of England kept monetary policy unchanged and ruled out negative interest rates for the moment. Retail sales increased 4.3% in July and unemployment held steady at 3.9%, although investors are waiting for the end of furlough to see the full picture. A similar response was given to the GDP figures, which showed that the UK economy shrank by a provisional 20.4% in the second quarter. The pound saw slight gains, perhaps because it was confirmation of what had been largely expected, strengthening by an average of 0.4% against major currencies. Some disappointing numbers from the eurozone harried the central currency after GDP figures showed a provisional con-
traction of 18.5% in Q2; the euroland economy as a whole shrank by 12.1%, but the purchasing managers’ indices indicated signs of growth. The 54.9 composite PMI for pan-Euroland indicated the “fastest growth in over two years.” The Sentix index of investor confidence across the Eurozone showed the fourth consecutive monthly improvement, rising by 4.8 points to -13.4. A quarterly 1.7% fall in employment is expected and a 12.1% quarterly contraction is GDP is likely to be confirmed today. After some tough weeks, the US dollar recovered a little. The Michigan index of consumer sentiment dipped back to 72.5, the PMIs came in at breakeven and the monthly US employment report showed better than expected results. An extension to unemployment benefits and the postponement of income tax collection helped the US dollar strengthen 0.3% on average. While job openings increased
to 5.9 million on the last day of June, a rise in jobless claims still showed a ratio of one vacancy for every three jobless claims. A rise in oil prices gave some assistance to the Canadian dollar. GDP increased 4.5% in May, the manufacturing PMI hit an 18-month high and there were further signs of recovery with the addition of 419k jobs in July. The numbers didn’t give a great deal of assistance to the Loonie, perhaps overshadowed by more positive results elsewhere. Manufacturing PMIs, retail sales and mortgage approvals all showed growth in Australia. As expected, the Reserve Bank of Australia kept its benchmark Cash Rate unchanged at 0.25%. The currency strengthened on the news but there was little to continue the positive momentum. The wage price index went up by 0.2% in the second quarter and the rate of inflation was -0.3% in June. WHEN you run a minority government it is often nec essary to take note that if you want to push through a controversial idea that it helps to have opposition parties with you. The Spanish government needs money and needs it quickly, so it recognised that many councils throughout the country have significant surpluses in their accounts which are estimated at to talling more than €20 billion. Perhaps rather hurriedly the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez managed to enter into an agreement with Spanish Federation of Mu nicipalities and Provinces
(FEMP) by the narrowest of margins to borrow €14 bil lion over a period of 10 years, which has since been increased to 15 years. In return, those municipal ities lending the money will be invited to share €5 billion to use in efforts to support their residents following the Covid19 pandemic. Mayors all over Spain who are not aligned to the PSOE or Podemos parties are in revolt against the plan as they argue that they should be able to use their funds to aid their population and it appears more than likely that plan is doomed to failure.

Industrial sector growth THE latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that although industr y in Spain is showing definite signs of recovery,
just three sectors actually saw growth in June 2020. In essence, cigarette and drug manufacturers saw very little problem

I’m up to here with it all!

THIS week I truly don’t know where to start. Like most of us, I’m actually up to here with all of it. Masks, viruses, black, white, conspiracies, racism, religion, woke, fake news, kneeling, left wing, right wing, immigrants, BLM, knifings, shootings, grooming, lockdowns, offending, demos, diversity, integration, terrorists, politicians, statues, hatred, lies, hypocrisy and Uncle Tom Cobley et al. What was that about halting the planet and jumping off? Lead me to it! However, one thing this ol’ boy has never been guilty of is burying his head in the sand. So contrary to last week’s dissenters, I am in fact fully aware that this whole chaotic mishmash could well be an NWO conspiracy. I actually began to suspect something of this ilk in the early 60’s when a good friend of mine, far more astute than I, often stated that the world was not run by governments, but in his words, controlled by the ‘Twelve men of Wall Street.’ Nothing much has changed since, except that those he referred to are now spread much further afield than a single street in New York! Unfortunately, it appears to me that the whole plot could now be reaching some sort of climax. I fear the con-

I did notice this week that places of entertainment and non-essential businesses in the UK were allowed to reopen again, after being ‘inexplicably’ closed a fortnight ago (remember my Eid appeasement piece!?). To me however, the event that took the whole tin was the erection in East London of the nine foot statue depicting a young black girl
using her mobile phone! So they want to tear down statues of our great statesmen and historical figures and in their place erect someone using a phone! It would be a little more acceptable if she’d have actually invented the device. Some chance! I also discovered that the widow of George Floyd, who ‘cried bitterly’ at his funeral, had not in fact seen him for six years. During that same period he had apparently also not paid a single penny in child maintenance. However in a move that just about sums up the priorities of today’s ‘woke’ brigade, she has actually received over $14 million (yep) in donations from ‘sympathetic well-wishers.’ No wonder the brothers could afford those new suits they all looked so uncomfortable in during the memorial ceremonies. What a result they’ve all had. I wonder how much of it has been donated to the charities of people that could truly benefit from it. Not a great deal I’ll be bound. ON January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom ceased to b e p a r t o f t h e E u ro p e a n Union. If you want to, you may exchange it for the new TIE, which is highly recommended, although there is no legal obligation to do so at this stage. Residency after July 6, 2020 As per July 6, 2020, British citizens who already had a certificate of residency can apply for the new residence document for UK nationals living in Spain; t h e Ta r j e t a d e I d e n t i d a d de Extranjero (TIE). For those who have never applied for residency, the deadline to apply for residence to legally reside in Spain ends on December 31, 2020, so the application must be done before the end of this year. TIE CARDS EXPLAINED
MANY of you have commented over the years how much you would like to have a physical residency card again, to use as ID and avoid having to carry your passport and residency with you. As from July 7, the new TIE cards were implemented and a lot of uncertainty is now out there… Should I swap my card now? How long do I have to do this? What do I have to do? How long does the process take? lots and lots of questions, many I hope to answer here, if not please follow us on our Facebook page www.face book.com/mallorcasolutions for more updates. Although this is not mandatory, the Foreign Office is advising you to change your card before the end of the year. At the moment they have opened a separate area for UK citizens to process this application and cannot confirm if this will be the same process after the withdrawal agreement has ended. We visit the immigration office in Palma on a daily basis and things are a little busy down there, with Covid rules in
• Resident within five years from the date of issue or permanent status, you can now change this for the new TIE card. Remember to pay the €12 local fee and prove your address if this has changed. ‘But he works hard and smells nice’ MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man SORRY there was no column last week. It’s not that I wasn’t grumpy, it’s just getting harder to be amusingly grumpy as opposed to just really angry and that was me last week. I’m not much better this week but here are some of the things that set me off. Social distancing - I know we have to do it but I loved the way folks greeted each other here in Spain. I prefer kissing people on the cheek instead of touching elbows. I like wearing cologne and being close enough for people to say I smell nice. I know that might sound weird but it’s something my late mother always said to me. It was a standing joke. When Mrs S used to call her and moan about me for some reason or another, which I know is hard to believe, my Mum would always listen with a sympathetic ear and then say ‘yes but he does work hard and he always smells nice.’ Once again the British government sprung a surprise quarantine period on
the folks returning from France and other places. This, of course, made thousands of people try and return home quickly and, in many cases, cut short their only holiday this year. I’m sure many had scrimped and saved so they could have a bit of quality family time together and try to forget, for a short time, about the chaos in the world. What did they find? Every airline, ferry and Eurostar immediately at least doubled their prices. Yeah I know it’s business but it’s also taking advantage of people that, in many cases, just can’t afford to pay it. If they’d stayed and seen their holiday through to the end they will have to do two week’s quarantine and possibly not get paid and, in some cases even lose their job. They aren’t covered by travel insurance because their trips hadn’t been cancelled and they were returning by choice. The joke is people returning to the UK from Spain have reported that no-one checked on them through their quarantine. Some didn’t even fill in forms and I’ve even heard of people that went back for a few days and returned without being challenged by anyone. DIONE LOCKYER THE year 2020 has been a testing time for many so far. Separated from family members, social distancing from those you love, without any physical contact, businesses closing and people being furloughed from their jobs. Statistics for mental health issues are on the rise, with helplines being inundated with calls. Is there anything we can do for ourselves to get us through this? How can you cope through difficult times? If you are a person who looks at every situation through a negative mindset, it can have an impact on every aspect of your life, including family, friendships, relationships and health. Your thought patterns affect your emotions, which in turn, affect your behaviour and actions. For example, if

How To Cope Through Difficult Times you wake up one morning in a bad mood and consistently think of that bad mood, you will feel angry, frustrated, grumpy. This may lead to the actions of shouting at family members, becoming impatient with work colleagues, whilst mentally beating yourself up over your behaviour. Depending on the issue that each individual is dealing with, there are several ways you can approach this and learn how to change your way of thinking and your coping mechanism. Write Rather Than Think The first step I take with all of my clients is journalling. Write down your current negative thought. What is the situation that has caused this thought? Do you have any physical evidence that
makes this thought true? Writing down your actual thoughts helps you recognise and name it without judgement. You may even notice that your painful feelings disappear after a while. ‘This too shall pass’ can become words to live by. You Can’t Control A Person or Situation Outside Of You This is a statement I live by daily. You are only in control of you! Whilst you cannot control a situation or person outside of you, you can control the emotions that you attach to it. Do not dismiss or ignore your emotion as that will not make the pain go away. Acknowledge the distress and accept it as your present reality. Accepting does not mean you like it, it only means that you can put
these unpleasant thoughts to the front and centre of your mind, rather than allowing them to float unconsciously under the surface. Be Your Own Best Friend Eighty per cent of our thoughts are negative, we can be really mean to ourselves. Ask yourself, is that the way you would treat your best friend? Self-love is so important. Everything starts with how you feel about yourself, so, the next time you punish yourself over a situation you cannot control, ask yourself this important question. Would I speak to my best friend in the same way? Do The Things You Love It is a fact that there will be situations in everyone’s life that may cause you difficult times, but, that doesn’t mean you have to allow
it to control every aspect of your life. When these situations occur, remember to do the things you love and reach for the belief. Talk out loud if it helps, ‘I love the warmth of the sun on my face’, ‘reading books makes me feel relaxed’, ‘I love the smell of fresh coffee’, these examples will amend your way of thinking and will encourage you to look for the positive. DEAR Euro Weekly News, I don’t know if other people find this strange or if it’s just me! I shop mostly at Mercadona in La Cala where I live. When we went into lockdown and were only able to go out for food and medication I found Mercadona very good with the rules. When going there during the lockdown there was only one person supposed to shop per household. Before you could go into the store there was someone to make sure you had gloves and you were keeping your distance. This also seems to be the case at Aldi. In Mercadona someone was at the lifts making sure only one person at a time used each of the two lifts going in and out. Also, the staff at the tills were stopping people from getting close while putting their shopping on the belts and paying for it. All very good and well organised to me. I really can’t understand why this is not in place now the store is so much busier than then! They now seem to let whole families in at once as happened before lockdown, this makes it so hard to distance. I think two people per household is enough as it is not a very big store. Also, there are no staff telling people about the rules regarding the lifts or to keep their distance. I have found the customers are left to do this. Surely during this busy time, it should be there are more staff doing these things. After all, we are still in a pandemic! Hopefully, it won’t be long till we get back to going shopping with just the locals. Would like to know if anyone else thinks this way or could it just be me? Yours sincerely June Butler
OUR VIEW From loved to loathed ISN’T it about time we cut Harry and Meghan some slack? If we don’t agree with what they are doing then just leave them alone. As a young couple with many advisors surely they have all the interference they need. Maybe they just want to do their own thing and create their own lives as many young couples do. Also, if you have an inheritance from our Mother, Father, wealthy Granny, why should they not accept their generosity? In the beginning, it was the stuff of fairy tales, a girl from a far-off land meets a handsome foreign prince and falls deeply in love. After a whirlwind romance they marry… however, the evil press is intent on destroying them. Sure, Meghan came from a dysfunctional family who she has had problems with and is estranged from. Are the Royal family normal? I think not. Surely the world now is not so judgemental as the people in those fairy tales? A Prince cannot marry an entertainer, a girl from a troubled family, with less money or even... a different colour of skin? Have we not progressed as a people to celebrate diversity, to applaud the underdog, to believe in true love? Any man would protect his wife and lash out against those who tried to belittle her, hurt her or bad mouth her. Why should that mean that he is under the thumb or less of a man? Surely that makes him more of a man? Let the couple move to California if that is what they wish, they are doing you no harm. If you wish to see the back of them and only have bad to speak of them now, here is your chance to rid yourself of the energy it takes you to feel so angry or jealous or hard done by.

Silent majority Dear Euro Weekly News, This is the first time I have ever responded to anything in the Euro Weekly, but the letter from ‘angry old Brit’ Alan Doig was so exactly what I had already said that I felt I had to respond. Your ‘survey’ on Leapy Lee was a complete waste of time. You say 74 per cent, but 74 per cent of what? The number of people who bothered to respond of course, and who would respond? The people who agree with Leapy Lee, who are quite obviously in agreement with his obnoxious views. It is sad that a section of the Brits, who seem to make up his bigoted followers, are being represented by you as typical of the rest of us, who are not racist, not narrow-minded, and definitely not in favour of leaving Europe. This nasty little troll obviously loves to air his views without any criticism, but for heaven’s sake don’t think that we (the silent majority) are in agreement. We live here because we want to be here, and consider ourselves to be Europeans. Does anybody know who Leapy Lee is? It is not clear why his views should be put forward, but I wonder if it is a deliberate way of invoking a response for your letters column. Bit muddled Dear Euro Weekly News, Barry Duke seems to have become a bit muddled in this week’s column. He starts out by savaging Norman Tebbit and Tebbit’s remark about his father ‘getting on his bike’ to look for work in the 30’s. Then he moves on to condemn the present UK government and the ‘grotesque nanny state.’ Barry is appalled and believes ‘folk should take personal responsibility,’ ‘nowadays self-control and the exercise of willpower are outdated concepts,’ ‘millions have been conditioned to believe that it’s the job of bureaucrats to manipulate every aspect of their lives.’ In other words, Barry believes in personal responsibility, self-control, freedom of the individual and minimal state intervention in the lives of private individuals. Hissing cockroaches: Pests or pets?
BARRY DUKE IT started as a fact-checking exercise that the Internet assumed was a quest for an apartment full of monster cockroaches. I began getting pop-up ads for hissing Madagascar roaches hours after I began reading up on the critters, something I was prompted to do by passage in ‘The Web’. Jonathan Kellerman’s thriller describes a katsaridaphobic character running out of her bathroom screaming after it had been invaded by giant roaches. I was sceptical, mainly because I’d seen some pretty big cockroaches in South Africa, but none that were three inches long. So I did a quick check, and sure enough, Kellerman’s description was spot on. Within an hour a window popped up on my computer screen, notifying me that I could buy from Amazon ‘a complete Kindle guide to the care of America’s favourite

pet, the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach’ for just $2.86 (€2.42) I then checked whether the roaches were indeed ‘America’s favourite pet.’ One site informed me that their ‘gentle nature, large size, odd sounds and lowmaintenance care have made them popular educational tools and pets.’ The ‘bots’ that monitor one’s
online searches took that search as a signal that I had a burning desire to populate our apartment with the bugs, and more and more ads began appearing. One, from a company called Fluker’s Farm in Louisiana, was offering them in two sizes: juveniles for $1.45 (€1.22) each and adults for $1.95 (€1.65). Fluker’s informed
me that ‘Hissing cockroaches are often kept as pets … Hissers have a relatively long life span and, under optimal conditions, they can live up to five years!’ Then up popped an eBay ad for ‘a brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged’ roach for $2.50 (€2.11) plus $27.90 (€23.56) shipping.’ Just when I thought these
topped the list of the weirdest pop-ups ever created, along came one for Donald Trump bandages. The algorithms that track one’s browsing had somehow made a connection between a benign and harmless insect and a repulsive, brutish and very stupid life-form. For a moment I was puzzled. Then I remembered doing a search during the Covid-19 lockdown period for adhesive plasters (‘curitas’ in Spanish) after I’d cut a finger slicing carrots, and could find none in the apartment. The Trump bandages are being sold by an outfit called the Patriot Depot for £8.95 (€9.90) for 20. The blurb says ‘Who better to put on a bandage but Trump, the man who’s been healing the wounds inflicted by Obama’s presidency.’ Don’t rush to put in an order. They are bound to plummet in price if the Orange Menace is exterminated by Joe Biden in November. Something good just HAS to come out of 2020.
