THIRTY-THREE excited entrepreneurs in Pilar de la Horadada, were granted financial aid by the mayor, José María Pérez Sánchez, as businesses begin to return to normal following Covid-19. The renewed positivity can be felt across the Costa Blanca region, with the hospitality sector revealing occupancy levels are up in the first week of August. The region’s hotel association, Hosbec, attributes the slight upturn to the domestic and local market, with president Toni Mayor urging “let’s not give up on winter just yet.” President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig’s also revealed he is “hopeful” about the resurgence of tourism after the coronavirus crisis, although he admits “it will not be easy.” He told Europa Press: “There is no plan B, but rather a plan: we are work-

beneficiaries ranging from between €925.93 to €2,314.81, who all stated the money “arrived at a good time, as it will help us overcome this situation.” José María Pérez Sánchez wanted to thank the entrepreneurs for continuing to operate during what has been extremely difficult times, and giving them his personal experience as an example to encourage them to continue their entrepreneurial journey. He went on to reassure all shops and companies of the municipality that the city council will continue to support them.

Humanitarian Work THE Cartagena Port Authority temporarily authorises care for migrants in the first 72 hours of their arrival, for humanitarian reasons. A BEACH lifeguard had to make his most bizarre rescue yet when he was alerted to a very dist re s s e d f l y i n g f l a m i n g o o n t h e beach of La Zenia. Specimens of flying flamingos have landed in unsuspected places in recent weeks around the Torrevieja lagoon. These specimens, which have only started to fly very recently, become confused and cannot follow the slipstream of the adults, come from the Torrevieja lagoon colony. Eight hundred specimens have been recorded in the salt flats this spring, thanks to the confinement and the increase in water levels due to the rains. Many of them have already been redistributed between the La Mata lagoon, the Santa Pola salt flats or El Hondo. Biologist, Juan Antonio Pujol, explained that “many flamingos born

POSITIVE: Baldó’s announcement will be a welcomed boost. IT has been announced that 48 Summer School places are to be opened up by Social Welfare to promote the social inclusion of vulnerable children. The councillor of Social Welfare, Almudena Baldó, told reporters that this year’s Summer School would include a total of 48 places assured by the Municipal Social Services, in order to “work to socially include children, whose families are in a vulnerability situation.” The 48 children are to receive access to this service in the educational centres of Playas de Orihuela, Miguel Hernández, Villar Palasí and Fernando de Loaces. The Summer School is especially important this year because the current health crisis of Covid-19 has directly affected many Oriolan families, and the announcement from Baldó, will come as a positive boost for the families of those involved.

The shipmates forwent the traditional banding together around the messdeck table in favour of wearing masks as they embraced the current social distancing rules whilst partaking in the time-honoured rituals. The tradition of issuing a tot of rum to each sailor started in 1740 by Vice Admiral Edward Vernon as a measure to help the well-being of all Royal Naval Sailors before ending on July 31, 1970, also for the sailor’s

THE second ecotourist tour, organised by the San Fulgencio Tourist Department, saw 35 people taken to the beautiful scenic route surrounding the Sierra del Molar. With Covid-19 hygiene and sanitary measures taken into consideration, 35 people went on a journey to learn about the wildlife, natural heritage and even to practise stargazing, without a night sky filled with light pollution. Councillor for Tourism, Darren Parmenter, has expressed his delight at the great reception these tours have had, which gives neighbours and visitors the chance to “discover San Fulgencio and its surroundings, with all the beauty and opportunities it has to offer,” he added. The San Fulgencio Tourist Department has organised a total of six ecotouristic routes. The remaining four will take place between September and December, and new dates will be announced shortly. Infrastructure Investment Youth Talk Show DISINFECTION: Beach cleaning and disinfection. CLEANING and disinfection are being carried out on the 11 beaches of the Oriolano coast during the busy summer weekends. Five labourers and two crew chiefs of the Association’s Special Employment Centre are in charge of the clean-up, disinfection and maintenance of the 11 beaches, with morning and afternoon shifts already being utilised.
The influx of summer beach bathers has furthered the need to reinforce these important tasks in order to make sure they are completed satisfactorily to comply with sanitary requirements as a result of Covid-19. This service has already been launched and will continue throughout the high season, until September 15.
A TOTAL of €100 million will be available to the 2020/2021 Works and Services Plan of the Torre Pacheco City Council to carry out improvements to the infrastructure of the municipality. Seventy five per cent of these investments will be designated to works to prevent future floods. One of them will be carried out on Avenida de Balsicas where the road surface will be raised, expanding the current hydraulic capacity by six times and three frames will be placed to facilitate the evacuation of water. Fords will be also built in Torre Pacheco, Roldán and Dolores de Pacheco, next to
the boulevards. The San Cayetano centre for the elderly will also be rehabilitated, adapting it to current urban regulations, making an accessible exterior pavement and renovating the interior facilities and toilets. The Pasico urbanisation and school will be improved thanks to the placement of a roundabout at the intersection of Avenida de Roldán and Avenida María Alicia Domínguez, while the surroundings of the Dolores de Pacheco school will be renovated with paths and street lighting set to be improved.
AN exciting new project for the young people of Pilare is set to launch this week. The Youth Council launches a new programme with the objective to guide and orient the youth of the municipality through the experiences of the interviewees. Staff of the Youth Council will interview people between 16 and 30years-old from Pilar de la Horadada. The programme will premiere to celebrate International Youth Day 2020 and will continue as a weekly programme, with an interview to be published every Wednesday at 12.00pm on the social networks of the Department of Youth.

Companies Awarded For Covid-19 Practices A SICTED Distinction Committee awarded two companies from t h e c o a s t a l c i t y o f G u a rd a m a r del Segura with advanced awards for good practices against Covid-19. Hotel Playas de Guardamar and the Pension Centre passed an external assessment ensuring that they followed strict compliance with all the requirements set out in the SICTED Advanced Good Practices guidelines as it pertained to Covid-19. These were adapted from the guidelines prepared by the Secretary of State for To u r i s m a n d t h e M i n i s t r y o f Tourism Health, in collaboration with the Spanish Tourist Quality Institute (ICTE) which were created for reducing the risk of Coronavirus contagion within the tourist sector. Cat Rescued By Firefighters
RESCUED: Firefighter rescue scared cat from a well. IN a heart-warming act, heroic Crevillent Park firefighters rescued a cat from a well in Albatera. The firefighters, who are part of the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters, were called to the scene of the incident which occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday August 5. They were alerted at around 2.30pm when the furry feline was seen running on the Arbuedas lands alongside the bank on bridge 18. Four firefighters and their corporal arrived at the site fully equipped with the latest rescue equipment and after securing the area and setting up, they preceded to lower one of the team down to retrieve the distressed animal. They managed to rescue the cat and bring the slightly scared feline back to the surface, alive and without injuries.

THE European Investment Bank lends €100 million as the Vega Baja region continues to repair damages caused by DANA last September. The President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, has announced that the Valencian Community will receive €18 million from the European Union Solidarity Fund as well as a €100 million loan from the European Investment Bank to repair the damages caused in the Vega Baja and the Vall d’Albaida. This financing has been in the works since La Gota Fría occurred in September 2019 and will cover projects to be actioned in areas related to Education, Agriculture, Public Works, Health, Tourism Actions and EPSAR. Repairs are planned for educational centres, irrigation services, road repairs, damage to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela, maintenance and repairs of tourist infrastructures and repairs in sanitation stations. The loan is fixed for a term of up to 17 years with amortisation at maturity, or 30 years amortisable, plus a five-year grace period. The interest rate for this operation will be determined next September when the first disbursement is requested and made. Subsequent disbursements will be made in 2021 depending on the execution of the projects.

These new stations have been subsidised by the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE) with works totalling €20,753.00. The IVACE have

A TALENTED local inventor from Torrevieja has designed a new facial protection screen in order to help people against potential Covid-19 contamination. ELDERLY residences in the Valencia Community face fines of up to €60,000 if they fail to have adequate coronavirus prevention measures in place. The Consell from Friday, August 7 approved a decree which sets new sanctions and will ban visits and outings in nursing homes which experience an increase in new cases. The new decree, set by the Ministry of Equality, is aimed at monitoring noncompliance with the measures against the killer virus in residences, day centres, youth centres and other establishments of a social nature. And the hefty fines will be enforced in all premises which don’t meet the guidelines. ‘Serious infractions’ include ‘skipping recommended confinements,’ keeping an employee in the workplace who has tested positive for Covid-19, flouting capacity limitations or carrying out activities that involve ‘crowding of people’ and create a risk of transmission of coronavirus to more than 10 people, ‘especially
if they are over 65 years old, with functional diversity or mental health problems.’ The new ruling also includes ‘minor infractions,’ with fines of up to €600 for breaches of capacity restrictions which affect less people and lack of ‘hygiene and prevention measures.’ In a press conference yesterday, Minister of Health, Ana Barcelo confirmed her department is preparing ‘a resolution that will once again make it possible to suspend visits and departures of residents from residences in those centres that are located in municipalities or health departments with the highest incidence of coronavirus infections.’ She explained the decision will be justified at all times by an epidemiological study and “a resolution will be approved for each specific case.” When asked if there was any data on how many residences and which may be affected, she replied: “Over the next week we will see what those residences may be,” reports Las Provincias.

THE installation of 10 can compactors has been carried out on different beaches along the Cartagena coast to offer a simpler way for people to recycle and take care of the environment. It is an initiative of Estrella Levante, in collaboration with the Cartagena City Council, which promotes sustainability and the protection of the environment in the municipality. “With this collaboration we intend to make it easier to recycle cans for
Cartagena residents and visitors to the coast,” said Cristina Mora, councillor for the Environment of the Cartagena City Council, who also assured that “the City Council is committed to this collaboration because it will allow us to continue taking steps in positioning of Cartagena as a sustainable city.” It is expected that the initiative will continue to be developed on the coast of Almeria and Alicante to make a visible contribution to the sustainability and care of the environment.

The new space may also become a reception centre for any ‘health emergency’ situations, such as the Gota Fria storms which occurred in Vega Baja last September. With an estimated investment of more than €6 million, the new Orihuela Costa High Resolution Health Centre aims to guarantee health coverage for both national and international residents. The investment not only covers the construction of the new centres, but also its equipment.
President Changes ORIHUELA FC were forced to make some major changes following the resignation of former president, Antonio Felices, and several of the directors. However, the Board of Directors worked quickly, calling a General Assembly to establish new positions at the head of the club. Following a vote, the appointment of Luis Manuel Terrés Tafalla as the new president of Orihuela FC was approved by an absolute majority. Terrés had previously held the position of Vice President since his arrival in 2011. Mario Fernández Lorente will accompany him on the board with new appointments expected to be made before the start of the new season.

Contract Cancelled THE Governing Council held yesterday in Murcia cancelled the contract for the comp a n y ’s c o n s t r u c t i o n and operation in the marina of La Manga, in
the municipality of San Javier. According to the regional Executive, the move to cancel works is due to ‘unjustified non-initiation, paralysis or non-completion of the works,’ and has demanded the total withdrawal of the facilities under its charge within two months from the day following the notification. Within the two months, the regional Executive’s agreement also outlined ‘the obligation’ to remove the sheet piles driven into the seabed, some steel plates used for the construction of the pontoons, which were installed without authorisation of the Ministry of the Environment and without presenting any project plans. The Governing Council resolution also determines that the company ‘is not entitled to any compensation.’
END: Works cancelled on marina in La Manga. The Executive’s decision to start these proceedings to cancel the Puerto Mayor project began on October 24, but the term did not begin to count until several weeks later. The company appealed, a bold move considering that the company has been in litigation against the Autonomous Community for more than 30 years, in
which they even tried to enforce a pre-constitutional decision declaring their intent to win land from the sea to build houses. Finally, the Legal Services of the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructures rejected the claim, considering that circumstances had not changed, with no works still taking place.

Boy, 2 Drowns A TWO-YEAR-OLD boy died after drowning in a community pool in a n u r b a n i s a t i o n o f L a Zenia, in Orihuela Costa. The family of the boy, a couple with five children, returned from a trip to the beach but around 40 minutes later, they realised he was missing. After a search around the urbanisation, the boy’s 13-yearold sister found him floating in the pool. The Guardia Civil was alerted to the drowning and informed the judicial commission to proceed with the removal of the body. This is the second child to die after drowning in a pool within the Vega Baja region in the last week.

THE municipality of Orihuela will once again have its beautiful August nights blessed with the bright lights of the Summer Cinema. The councillor for Youth, Mar Ezcurra, announced the screening timetable is scheduled to run from today, Thursday August 13 to Friday August 21. “Each outdoor movie night will feature two film sessions for family audiences, plus popcorn will be distributed among the attendees,” explained Mar Ezcurra “as in recent years, different neighbourhoods in the city of Orihuela, three districts and one urbanisation on the Orihuela coast have been chosen.” The Summer Cinema film cycle will commence
on Thursday August 13 and will take place in the Punta Prima urbanisation, next to the viewpoint, with the first films being; El Parque Mágico (Wonder Park) and Pequeño Gran Problema (Little). On Friday August 14, the screen moves to the San Pedro neighbourhood, in Orihuela, where the films; Uglydolls and Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, will be shown. The neighbourhood of San Antón has its double film session scheduled for Monday August 17 with; Cavernícola (Early Man) and Familia al Instante (Instant Family) scheduled to be shown. On Tuesday, August 18, next to the social centre of the Camino de Enmedio, you will be able to
see; Ferdinand and Yesterday. The La Campaneta fairgrounds on Wednesday August 19, will see the films; Smallfoot and Un Corazón Extraordinario (An Extraordinary Heart) screened. Lit Up THE open-air Torre Pacheco shopping centre will be fitted with new LED lighting along its walkways which will allow for more energy savings as well as offering greater lighting for the public. The Torre Pacheco City Council are carrying out works to improve public lighting on several streets
with current lamps and other lighting being replaced with alternatives that work with white light LED technology. The councillor for Commerce and Public Roads, Yolanda Castaño, explained that the new lighting represents energy savings whilst offering greater lighting.
POLICE swooped on bars, discos and nightspots throughout the Valencia region last weekend, checking compliance with anti-coronavirus regulations. As they did the previous weekend, officers from all police forces and the Guardia Civil carried out controls in principal tourist areas in Valencia, Alicante and Castellon provinces. The Generalitat police’s Night-time Venues Unit inspected 158 establishments last weekend, resulting in fineable offences on 33 occasions for ignoring Covid-19 health and safety regulations or breaching laws covering nightspots, leisure activities and

THE prize of promotion to the Second Division has left the players of FC Cartagena striving to stay at the club. The prestige of playing in the Second Division, added to the fact that the minimum salary for contracted players is set at €77,500, means players are resistant to exiting FC Cartagena. With the successful promotion, the club is planning to carry out an upgrade of the squad and those who are not currently contracted will be hoping they are to be kept on for next season. The Sports Commission will have to remain focussed on the budget as well as ensuring they have built a team with the ability to stabilise the club in the Second Division, and grow for the future. Wretched end to a desperate journey TWO African stowaways, believed to be around 13, were drowned when they jumped from a merchant ship in Valencia port. According to the Spanish press they were killed by the eddies slapping against the ship’s hull as it docked, hampered by their own clothes and the luggage they carried. According to some sources, they hardly knew how to swim but rejected the lifebelts they were thrown. They carried no identity documents and pathologists are taking fingerprints and DNA samples in an attempt to match them against Spanish databases. Not only their identities are a mystery, but investigators do not have a clear idea of where the boys stowed away on board the Leto, registered in Liberia. They only know they could have joined the ship in Douala (Cameroon) or possibly San Pedro in Ivory Coast, the last port that the Leto visited before the two-week crossing to Spain.

Exploited Workers A BUSINESSMAN was arrested by National Police officers after they were notified of several alleged working malpractices being perpetrated. The arrested person, aged 30, and of Mexican nationality, is alleged to have had almost 50 employees without contracts, not discharged from Social Security and also doing uninterrupted 12-hour shifts. It is also alleged that most of the employees at the company, based in the town of Crevillent, Alicante were thought to have broken immigration laws. They are alleged to be the only offender of these workers’ rights offences. An investigation was been carried out by officers of Group III of the Unit Against
Immigration Networks and Documentary Falsehoods (UCRIF) of the Provincial Police Station of Alicante, after becoming aware that a company in the town was potentially employing people with immigration issues, and without contracts. After investigators carried out various ‘discreet and intermittent’ surveillance, in which they were able to see how this company operated, the necessary information was gathered and Labour inspectors initiated the appropriate sanctioning labour files, while officers of the National Police proceeded to arrest the sole administrator of the company. RESCUE: Wild Boar rescued by firefighters. FIREFIGHTERS of the Orihuela Park were called to an abandoned irrigation pond in Redovรกn in an attempt to save two wild boars. Members of the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium were once again called out to perform another heroic animal rescue. Sadly, they were too late to rescue one of the little creatures, but with the assistance of some ropes and an inflatable canoe, they were able to reach the remaining wild boar who was still struggling to survive.
Six firefighters, a sergeant and a corporal had to race against time in order to avoid the animal sinking back into the irrigation pond water. The event occurred on Wednesday August 5, at 11.45am, in the El Cabezo area, in an old quarry in the municipality. This irrigation pond is without sufficient security and becomes a real hazard for any animals that come to drink the water. After the rescue, the surviving wild boar was handed over to the Local Police, before being taken to the SEPRONA unit of the Guardia Civil.

STICK UP: National Police work quickly.
A MAN was arrested in Murcia for stealing a car, whilst the occupants were still inside. The National Police were notified by the driver immediately after he was threatened with a stick and forced to hand over his car. A team was quickly set up in the surrounding area of the theft and they managed to track the location of the stolen car. It was finally stopped in the La Paz
neighbourhood, where the original incident had taken place. The 30-year-old man attempted to dispose of the keys as he fled the scene, however thanks to the quick work of the National Police he was swiftly apprehended and an arrest was made. The man was charged with theft of the vehicle, and was also charged with theft through violence and intimidation. The stolen car was recovered and returned to its owner.

SEIZED: Drugs and money found in drug dens. THE Guardia Civil made huge progress in the war against organised crime by taking down five very active drug outlets in Torrevieja. The criminal outfits were part of an organisation run by several brothers who had a team of drug dealers operating throughout the city. In total, five homes were raided as part of this operation, four in Torrevieja and one in San Pedro del Pinatar, with a total of 115 grams of marihuana, 200 grams of a cutting substance, one precision scale, three doses of a doping substance, and two vehicles used to ac-
quire more drugs from the outskirts of Murcia, all being seized. Upon thorough search of the properties, â‚Ź11,000 in cash was also found. An investigation began in October 2019 following a complaint from a neighbour about the amount of people moving in and out of a house, which happened at all hours of the day and night. The extensive investigation eventually resulted in nine people being arrested, all between the ages of 25 and 50, and of Moroccan and Algerian nationalities. They have all been charged and provisionally released pending trial.

VISITORS to the Valencian Community with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 will spend the quarantine period in free hotel accommodation. The Generalitat’s Tourism department is paying €280,000 to take over a Benidorm hotel for Alicante Province tourists and another in Valencia City for those from Valencia or Castellon, the regional Spanish press reported. Unconfirmed reports hinted that the Benidorm hotel would be on the Levante beach. Francesc Colomer, regional Tourism secretary, explained that the initiative incorporated yet another measure
linked to tourist safety, sending out a message of “confidence and credibility to the national and international tourism markets.” Colomer stressed that the tourism sector had made an “enormous effort” to apply health and safety practices that would back the Valencian Community brand as a reliable, quality holiday destination. Referring to the free hotel accommodation for suspected or confirmed Covid-19 cases, the Tourism chief pointed out that the initiative represented another advantage for the sector at such a “complicated and difficult” time.

THE Consell, the regional government’s Cabinet, is allocating €239.4 million for personal protection equipment (PPE). This will be used over the next two years to equip medical staff, patients and
the general public in the post-emergency period, but also to cope with a possible new wave of infections caused by Covid-19. This includes gowns, aprons, visors, head-coverings, overshoes and masks
which, Generalitat sources revealed, will be sourced within the Valencian Community. The Consell initiative is specifically directed at the region’s small and medium businesses unable to enter the central government’s contacting scheme for healthcare equipment. Many of the region’s firms, especially from the textile sector based principally in l’Alcoia, El Comtat and Elche are already manufacturing this equipment. Others will re-organise their activities towards coronavirus-related items, thanks to €4 million in Generalitat grants to re-orientate production. In the early days of the pandemic, the regional government had to turn to China for PPE. Generalitat sources quoted in Spanish media said it would rather rely on the interior market, which is better-prepared and can respond more quickly than turn to Asia.
A BRAND new inclusive chatbot has been developed for the Santa Pola Turismo website. PAULA, the chatbot, is seen as a huge development in the continued plans to grow smart tourism in Santa Pola, and is a proud moment for the designers and Turismo Santa Pola. In fact, Turismo Santa Pola have had these plans in the works for some time and the introduction of Paula, called that due to the toponymic origin of Santa Pola, is viewed to be the beginning of ‘smart tourism.’ They have been betting on smart tourism for several years, belonging to the DTI network of tourist destinations managed by the Valencian Institute of Tourist Technologies (Invat-tur). In this technological endeavour, they have teamed with SemanticBots to design the innovative chatbot. A representative from Turismo Santa Pola commented “we are very proud to have this very smart collaborator, who will learn as we ask her questions related to the tourist resources of our fishing village, and who will also use a ‘natural’ language, avoiding robotic responses. “The pilot will initially work in Spanish, to later be able to incorporate

CRASH: Major incident in Benijofar. A TRAFFIC accident on the CV-920, which falls in the municipality of Benijofar left two men seriously injured. The incident occurred on the Guardamar del Segura highway, in the direction of Rojales, on the evening of Monday August 3. The highway was the scene of a crash between two vehicles which collided with each
other head on. The horrific accident left one man able to crawl free from his car whilst the other driver remained trapped before being released by the Fire Department. The major rescue operation called for the firefighters to utilise the services of a command unit vehicle, as well as heavy urban and rescue vehi-
cles to assist at the scene. A 61-year-old man sustained multiple injuries including an open wound to the lower limb and a 55-year-old man suffered abdominal trauma and a contusion to the clavicle and scapula. Both men were transferred to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela for treatment.

Jacob’s knock out journey JACOB SHARP weighed 165 kilos two years ago before shedding a staggering 70 kilos. A newfound passion for boxing and sheer determination has literally transformed his whole life. “I was fat from a kid, I grew up obese,” the 27year-old, who lives on the Costa Blanca told Euro Weekly News. “I was so shy and would-
n’t have my picture taken. I ate, was lazy and never had any energy. I couldn’t do anything and everything was a chore.” Londoner Jacob, who has set up home in Benidorm, admits at his heaviest he had a 56-inch waist and at 6ft 3 inches, could only buy clothes for large men online. “I knew I had to do something. I tried going to
the gym and dieting but nothing happened, I didn’t lose any weight. “Then I started boxing in January 2018 and forgot about dieting. I just concentrated on the boxing and the weight literally fell off. I was training two hours a day for two years solid. “I found a love for boxing, it’s something I really enjoy and my weight dropped to 95 kilos.”
Little did Jacob know that this would be a massive turning point in his life. As his body shape altered, so did his mindsight and life goals. With a natural flair for the sport, Jacob - who has deliberately bulked up to 110 kilos - set his sights on competing in the ring and already has two wins under his belt. The heavyweight

added: “I’m now aiming for regionals. I’ve been offered to turn professional but if I do it now, I won’t be able to compete in the Olympics or anything. “I would rather achieve something before I go pro-
fessional. It’s very much a business, and I want to get more enjoyment out of it before going too serious.” In just two years, Jacob has already sparred with the top 10 heavyweight boxers, including Artur Szpiika, a Polish professional boxer who challenged once for the WBC heavyweight title against Deontay Wilder in 2016. A major turning point for Jacob came in September 2019 when he met Ilko Kirimov. “He was training for the Valencia championships and needed someone to spar with. He came to Vista Gym in La Nucia where I train to use me for sparring and beat me black and blue. “After that he won the championship and I said to myself ‘I’m going to beat this guy.’ I trained hard and put my name down for a fight in Benidorm and he did too, thinking he could beat me. But he didn’t, I beat him. “After that I knew I could do anything. “I want to win the Community of Valencia, then the regionals and see what’s next, it could be the whole of Spain. According to the Spanish constitution, the freedom of movement can only be ‘limited’ in a State of Alarm and this could also be debatable. Nevertheless, it seems that politicians are using Covid19 as a carte blanche to do what they think best; without any questioning from the general public, just a few voices from some doctors, biologists, sociologists and phycologists who are totally against the measures which are being taken. However, they say that our society is the most informed in history, but in reality, it is probably the most deceived. Nowadays, we believe we are infor med, with knowledge and with the freedom that allows us to make our

own decisions, but this might not be the case. People, in general, like to inform themselves in a comfortable way, sitting on their sofa and without making great intellectual efforts. Therefore, television, papers, and social media are the preferred mediums, and those who want to control
our opinion know that. As a result, they inform us through the news and teach us what we should think through series, movies, and major Hollywood productions. They begin to show us the way from a young age with cartoons and video games. We must have in mind that the most important media
groups are owned by just a few families, who in turn own the most powerful corporations on the planet. You may ask yourself, where do our politicians fit in in all this? Well, as an example, the major media groups have received grants from the government during Covid-
19, which doesn’t make much sense as these groups have no financial problems, as they are always boasting about how well they are doing. These major media groups as stated above belong to some of the world’s major corporations using their foundations to circulate budgets superior to many countries’ gross domestic product. In 1888 President Rutherford B Hayes noted in his diary that the United States ceased being a government for the people and had been replaced by a ‘government of the corporation, by the corporation, and for the corporation.’ It’s up to the people to question and critically think about the information being given and at the same time to pressure our politicians to get out of their comfort zone and take action.

EIB Fights Pollution SPAIN is receiving a great deal of funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the latest announcement shows that it will provide €95 million for a number of urban regeneration projects in Barcelona. In a statement on its finances, the company revealed that it ex pected to make a loss of at least £70 million (€77 million) for its fi nancial year ending August com pared to a profit of £155 million (€170 million) in 2019. Despite this, reserves are rela tively good and the company has strong lines of credit so with the potential reduction in staff it be lieves that it can return to profit. EASY HORSE CARE “Maybe you can’t change the world by saving one horse, but you can change the whole world for the horse that you save.” - Sue Weeding, Easy Horse Care Co-founder THE last few months have been challenging for everyone, no matter where you are or what you do, but for one couple, to some extent it has had to be life carrying on as normal. There has been no rest for Rod and Sue Weeding as they have continued to battle through against all the odds and care for the 122 horses, ponies and donkeys they have in their care in these ever challenging and difficult times. The couple founded the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, a registered charity, in 2008 and their lives have taken a path they could never have envisaged back then. Turning their peaceful Rojales finca into a rescue centre they have taken in all sorts of animals from cats and chickens to pigs and peacocks. The horrific stories which come with these animals, such as starvation, malnutrition, injury, abandonment and abuse come at an emotional cost to both Rod and Sue who encounter such atrocities all too often. But it is the financial burden that the pair undertake which is incomprehensible for most, with the horses costing around €4,800 per week on food alone. The Centre works closely with the local authorities including the National Police, Guardia Civil and SEPRONA and is well respected and recognised across the Costa
Blanca and further afield, regularly receiving calls from the authorities asking for help and assistance in rescuing equines. Rod and his trusty 25-year-old vehicle is on call 24-7 and has been called upon to go to Murcia and Andalucia to assist in rescues. Yet, despite the tremendous and invaluable work Easy Horse Care does, it remains un-
supported financially. Despite years of pleas and requests it receives no funds and relies entirely on donations and money coming from its charity shops and open days. The severe and extended lockdown in Spain has put unprecedented pressure on its resources, with shops closed for so long and forcing the ending of its Open Days; now replaced by the new Daily Tours. It has had to rely on donations only for the last four months as all other means of income were severed, and lack of funds meant they had to let go of the few paid workers they had. With an average cost of €40 per week to feed each horse, the financial pressures are immense: “These last few months have seen the arrival of two new donkeys and two horses,” said Sue: “One of the donkeys came with many problems, including malnutrition, worms, neglected feet, painful infection due to untreated wounds and both donkeys had to be castrated. Sue adds: “We have had tremendous support from our growing team of volunteers, who have worked with us to keep the fields clean (no easy task in this hot weather), help with the feeds, grooming, and with our new daily tours. We are so very grateful to them and to our media team who have helped to update our Facebook and public relations. Also, our shops have reopened, and we are so thankful to our shop volunteers and for the delivery and collection of furniture team. “Also a special thank you to the Albox Corner Shop for their incredible support and the money they have raised for the rescue centre that helped us keep going through lockdown. Also to Dorothea, our vet and Enrique the Farrier, and a huge ‘thank you’ to all the public who continue to follow, support and donate to us. We could not survive without you!”

Still denying its existence
MILLIONS still dying, hospitals and governments unable to cope, countries that have allowed tourism to resume becoming once again rampant with it - and still numbskulls are denying the existence of this devastating Covid virus. Why do human beings choose to turn a blind eye to events and situations that are blatantly staring them in the face? Do these ostriches not understand that by ignoring the existence of a problem, they will never stand a chance of solving it? Like their overblown feathered counterparts, do they think that when they withdraw their heads all the troubles will have miraculously gone away? Well I have news, they won’t. To my mind, unless something drastic or miraculous occurs, I think this evil malady will be with us for well into next year and possibly beyond. It makes my blood boil to see so many totally ignoring the directives of the health leaders and authorities. I also feel that by advising the over 50’s to stay at home is aiming at the wrong end of the age groups. These are the citizens who have in the main been conforming to the government’s directives and now are being penalised for it. It’s the self-centered youngsters that should be firmly locked

down. But that won’t happen will it? The privileged and uncaring members of present day generations simply won’t comply. We are now experiencing the direct result of the namby pamby’ing leftie luvvies who, over the past 30 years or so, have somehow eased themselves into positions of control and frankly got it all wrong. It has resulted in millions of our youngsters firmly
believing that the world owes them a living and utterly destroyed all their respect for others, particularly their elders. The social media has allowed them to air and spread doctrines based on little, or no knowledge of history or tradition whatsoever, and subsequently instilled in them values so out of touch with reality that they consider the colouring of their pubic hair a deci-
sion of major importance. Sometimes I really am thankful to have reached the age of 81. At least with my future longevity growing shorter and more precarious by the day, I won’t have to experience the total chaos our planet will find itself in when serious decisions need to be made by this bunch of, oh so often ‘offended’ and utterly naïve bunch of selfish wasters. I just hope and pray, that those among them who have received a decent upbringing and retain a true empathy and respect for their fellow human beings, can lift their peers out of the mire they have sunk into. Unfortunately, as these are in a sad minority, I fear most of their efforts will be lost in such a morass of entitled under-achievers and violent criminals that most of their efforts will be completely in vain. There seems to be many strong opinions on this terrible virus and whether it is getting worse, better or just something we should try to live with. Should travelling be a priority? Can people be trusted to go to a different country and abide by the rules and regulations? We should remember that a holiday is a luxury and also that cheap beer and sunshine aren’t the answers to all our prayers. However, some of us need to break from the old routine, to literally distance ourselves from our everyday life. When will we be able to do that? Nobody has an answer. This uncertainty seems to be perpetuating fear, and constant news updates on figures really stick the boot in. Whilst we are getting riled up and upset about not getting to burn in the sand for a week there are other people who have been parted from their families, missed funerals, lost their jobs and lost their lives. Deep down do we really feel that we deserve a break more than them? The governments have our choices in the palm of their hand. There are some who think that they are crushing us and others who think they are saving us. The majority may feel that we should put our trust in them and let them take control, it would certainly free us of some worries. Others believe it is a well-planned conspiracy to control the world, are they getting a bit carried away? Before you think of flying off into the sun please think, are you ready for any eventuality? Is it really worth it? If so, go right ahead.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, On Friday, July 24, my wife and I had come out of Mercadona and into the outside parking area near the entrance. When she suddenly collapsed and her head hit the floor. A young Spanish couple in a car stopped and jumped out and called an ambulance as she was unable to move. They stayed with us and used a hand fan to keep Stella (my wife) cool in the fierce heat. I would like to say a mighty big thanks to this couple for the quick reaction and help they gave us and it just shows that there are people in this world that care and have feelings for others. Never got their names but they know who they are and I just hope that they manage to read your paper or somebody who knows them passes on this message. THANK YOU AGAIN.

Your wish Hi Euro Weekly News, Please, please, bring back the Hexagram puzzle, for myself and most of my friends, this is our favourite puzzle of the week, as it is sometimes really hard and other times quite easy, it seems to always be the one that is left out in favour of the Funeral Plan advertisement. We really enjoy the rest of the paper, especially Leapy Lee, always controversial, but spot on with his comments, Mike Senker is also very entertaining. The Authoress, doesn’t seem to be in this week but her comments are also good, the Letters page is always up to the minute. In all, it’s our favourite weekly paper, but please us all even more by reinstating the Hexagram puzzle, once and for all.
Heartbreaking Story of a British Expat who Flew to the UK from Spain’s Costa del Sol to Visit his Sick Brother then was Refused Access by the Care Home! We were not allowed see my mum-in-law. Her husband only twice a week, very strict due to Covid. Just the way it is now. They don’t want guests or staff bringing virus in. It is heartbreaking.

Guadalupe - the Royal Monastery at the heart of Spanish history SET in the heart of the region of Extremadura about an hour’s drive from the historic Renaissance town of Caceres, the pretty village of Guadalupe is a remarkable destination in its own right. While its cobbled streets are lined with striking buildings that show the evidence of many centuries of history, the reason people come from far and wide is to see the magnificent building right at its centre - the Sanctuary-Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Founded by King Alfonso XI of Castille in the 14th century, it is a truly exceptional edifice that has been added to and lavishly embellished down the years. In fact it is regarded so highly that it has been named as a UN World Heritage Site. It became Spain’s Royal Monastery, where the great and good gathered amidst some of the most magnificent religious art and exquisite gold, and silverware. This was not simply a religious house, for it was at the heart of power. It was here that the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, granted Christopher Columbus an audience that would eventually lead to the discovery of the Americas. Exceptional blend Architecturally, it is an exceptional blend
of differing styles. The 14th-15th century Mudejar church and cloister is particularly fine, with its intricate façade setting a striking tone. The interior nave and two side aisles are notable for their fine vaulting and feature richly ornamented altars and tombs. The sacristy is renowned for a series of paintings by Zurbarán and magnificent wall paintings that seem to leap out from the plain canvas of the architecture itself. It was built between 1638 and 1647 and provides a contrast to the earlier periods. Moving through the sacristy the Chapel of Santa Catalina of Alejandria is home to some imposing tombs that date to the 17th century. It is also packed with reliquaries and exquisite works of art. Entering into the Camarin de la Vigen you will find an octagonal room decorated in baroque style. Head up the stairs and the star of the show awaits - Guadalupe’s famous black Madonna. Here a monk takes over from the usual guide to present the statue to and bless visitors. The statuette is richly clothed and in her arms holds a baby Jesus - also black. It is the most emblematic symbol of the monastery - and for many Catholics the most holy part of the visit.

Expats, the Mother Country needs you!
BARRY DUKE I ANTICIPATED a robust reaction to a question I posed on Facebook last week, but I hadn’t bargained for the outpouring of derision and fury it provoked. This is what I posted on the Brexpats in Spain page: ‘How many of you are prepared to return to the UK to help it out in its hour of need? ‘I ask because I received a message on FB that got me thinking about writing a column for Euro Weekly News. The message reads, in part, “it is time for expats to return home and rally to the mother country at its time of need. We have an economy to rebuild and we face huge challenges from the virus, from the shortterm impact of Brexit, and the ‘woke’ fifth columnists undermining us from within”.’ It damn near caused a riot. Within 30 minutes 115 people had left comments, many of
which cannot be repeated in a family newspaper. The page’s administrator was forced to close down the thread when it looked like it was getting completely out of
hand. Many excellent points were made, but to my mind the best was posted by Iain Henderson who pounced on the ter m ‘fifth columnists,’ meaning the enemy within.
HELPING OUT: I won’t be one of them.
He pointed out that the UK ‘isn't at war with the EU ... We are not dealing with spies, saboteurs, or irregular forces. This is a story of a small island
nation which has taken its ball and bat home. It’s now having a childish tantrum as it’s facing a long period out in the cold with no agreement with its biggest trading power.
‘And no. I won’t be going home to help Blighty in its hour of need. This is an act of sabotage of epic proportions and the tragedy is that we have done it to ourselves. John Perry added: ‘I am one of those ‘woke fifth columnists’… We are disenfranchised exiled patriots. We love our country and want the best for it. We came to Spain as Euro Brits. ‘England is presently in the hands of the very worst third rate leadership, governed by Johnson, a pound shop Donald Trump. There is no place for me at the moment there. ‘I expect the union to break up and Brexit to utterly destroy the economy. Covid will simply intensify the disaster already inflicted on it by a half-witted, post-imperialist deluded electorate.’ My own view? Let the thousands of expats who voted to leave the EU return to sort out the current mess and the far bigger one looming on the horizon.

Okay, you have bought those new trainers and are keen to get out for a nice jog, but here are some top tips for beginners. It really helps to have someone about the same level of ability as you to run with. You’ll encourage each other when you’re not so keen to run. You’ll feel that you do not want to let your running partner down, and this will help motivate you. Firstly, to avoid getting a stitch do not eat anything solid about two hours before your run and only drink in small quantities. Has this become tomorrow’s chip paper? Is it now a thing of the past? A Shock To The Nation On February 15, 2020, the beautifully talented Caroline Flack took her own life. Whilst I didn’t know her personally, it had a huge impact on me. She lit up our TV screens with her big smile, dirty laugh and ‘girl next door’ attitude. She

be or not believe to be true? My answer is both yes and no! Of course, we can all have our own beliefs, our own opinions. If we were all the same, the world would be extremely
dull. However, I truly believe there is a way of doing so. We should express our feelings, beliefs and opinions with nothing but KINDNESS! We should respect that not everyone will think and feel the same.
We should understand that others may be more fearful of the current situation and are simply not ready to look into other motives. The same as we should respect those who have researched more and taken the time to look out for others. So, before you fall out with a friend over a difference of opinion, before you remove a family member from your life, read this quote and remember, you only get one shot at life, so make it count! Don’t let anyone make you cruel! No matter how badly you want to give the world a taste of its own bitter medicine, it’s never worth losing yourself. #BeKind was a global hashtag. It’s now time to turn that hashtag into action.

For people with mental health issues, it can be an excruciating and exhausting experience. Daily life is enough of a struggle for us to cope with without additional pressures that poor mental health can bring. Small things can make a difference to anyone when they are not feeling themselves. When you’re feeling down, it doesn’t always take winning the lottery to turn your day around does it? It’s the little things in life that we so often take for granted! That passing compliment on a new outfit, a hug from a loved one or being praised for something you have accomplished, no matter how small it may seem. These small things can make a difference to anyone when they are not feeling themselves, even more so for people with mental health difficulties. When I’m in that dark place and all I see is the world against me, a small message turns my whole day around. From a personal point of view; I am very open about what I
have. I keep no secrets about my condition. If anyone asks, I am more than willing to tell them. By being this way I’ve found the true friends and family who stick by me. They accept everything, from my weird and wacky sense of humour to understanding the way I react and being able to deal with curve balls I can so frequently throw. Through thick and thin; these are the people I choose to surround myself with. The people who have the biggest impact on my life, the ones who I can rely on. Having bipolar disorder means that I could be in a different frame of mind from one day to the next, sometimes I can change within the same day! I have days where I want to be alone; I’m normally a very social person, if I go quiet, it’s a key indicator I may not be myself. Having that message pop up on your phone “Hi! Are you okay? I haven’t heard from you!” is sometimes all I need. It might seem insignificant, but when I’m in that dark place and all I see is the world against me, it turns my whole day around. To those loved ones; family and friends of anyone who is struggling with their mental health and to us fighters and survivors who are or have struggled with their own, remember that we cannot do everything on our own. It’s terribly hard for loved ones to see us in distress but it’s equally hard for us. You mustn’t see us as just ‘being difficult’ or ‘hard work’ because everyone needs a little help every now and again. You don’t have to go to the ends of the earth to help us, just show that you care and show that there is something for us to fight for. Much love, Ms Bipolar x

MADRID band Los Secretos (The Secrets) will stop off in Murcia next week as part of their ‘Return Tour.’ As part of the ‘It’s Summer in Caravaca’ campaign, the band, hailed ‘one of the best groups in history of Spanish music’ will perform live on Thursday, August 20, in the town’s Plaza de Toros. The Department of Culture confirmed the concert will be held in acoustic format, the public will be seated, keeping the safety distance, and all the prevention measures that currently regulate public shows and guarantee that attendees will be in place. With everyone on board there’s a lot to look at in this top version of a range that starts at €21,468 (£19,330) and tops out with the Elite Nav you see here, complete with goodies like sat nav, heated front seats (and steering wheel), diamond cut alloys and dual zone climate control. Pulling all this along is a zingy little 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine in the most powerful of the three available versions. Urge it on and the sound turns a touch diesel-like but there's no denying the resulting performance. Showing a little restraint pays dividend at the pumps, with a week and
500 miles of mixed road driving producing a wallet friendly 6l/100km (47.0mpg) on the trip computer. You can have your Crossland with a diesel engine and better economy still but with most of the cars finding private buyers you can’t imagine many people wanting the extra expense (and, nowadays, raised eyebrows from the neighbours). Not that you can’t spend more on even the top model if you fancy, from premium metallic paint (€722/£650) and leather seat trim with electric adjustment for the driver’s seat (€1,871/£1,685) to a safety pack that includes emergency city braking (€555/ £500) and rear camera with parking sensors front and rear (€505/£455). A proper spare tyre at a reasonable €133 (£120) would be top of my tick list of extras, thereby banishing the standard tyre sealant kit forever.

Powerful plug-in GERMAN giant BMW has launched a new, more powerful plug-in hybrid version of the 5 Series called the 545e xDrive. The xDrive shares the same plug-in hybrid power-
train as the newly launched X5 xDrive45e SUV, with a turbocharged 3.0litre straight-six petrol engine, an 11.2kWh battery pack and an electric motor, giving a maximum output of 387bhp and 600Nm of torque. BMW’s most powerful PHEV powertrain gives the 5 Series a 0–62mph time of 4.7 seconds, a top speed of 155mph and, more importantly, a maximum electric range of 33 miles. Fuel economy figures for the xDrive come in between 117.7–166.1mpg. CO2 emissions figures are between 38–54g/km of CO2. With the new model based on the facelifted 5 Series, it has gained all the cosmetic and technology upgrades fitted to the updated standard model. So, buyers get a slightly tweaked radiator grille, slimmer LED headlamps and updated front and rear bumpers. Inside, there is
added support for Android Auto to its 12.3-inch infotainment system. The 545e xDrive forms a key part of BMW’s latest electrification strategy, which is focused on expanding its pure-electric, PHEV and mild-hybrid models. BMW hopes that 50 per cent of European sales will be electrified by 2023 - although the brand will continue to improve and develop its combustion-engined models too - as BMW is aware that not all of its customers are ready to make the jump to an electric powertrain yet. BMW sees PHEVs as a compromise between the convenience of petrol power and fully electric. BMW has attempted to make the new 545e act like an EV by installing new geo-fencing technology that automatically forces the saloon to run in pureelectric mode when the car recognises it’s in a builtup area.

THE new GR Yaris is breaking cover in the UK over the last few weeks with a summer tour of Toyota retailers. The thoroughbred performance hatchback developed directly from Toyota Gazoo Racing’s World Rally Championship-winning experience, made its debut ahead of its official launch in October. The display has given potential customers and those who have already reserved their car the chance to take a first close-up look at the model ‘in the metal’. Each Toyota Centre operated a personal appointment service, so everyone had plenty of time to take in the detail and learn more from the specialist sales teams about the GR Yaris’s performance and equipment specifications. The car is a pre-production model and was on static display only. Details of driving opportunities in production-ready cars will be announced at a future date.
