MALAGA City Mayor, Francisco de la Torre, says the region should not be forgotten in the discussions regarding UK quarantine measures for holidaymakers.

The Spanish executive “cannot forget Malaga… in their negotiations with the British government to get exceptions in regard to the mandatory quarantine decreed for tourists returning from Spain,” says de la Torre.

“It would be a mistake and an injustice” assures de la Torre via his Twitter account. This decree has come as a shock to many people, tourists as well as politicians, both in Spain and in the UK. Currently, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands are rallying to be excluded from this quarantine measure.

THE Department of Commerce of Rincon de la Victoria has announced the free new online sales platform, the Rincon Market App, available until December for those establishments in the town that wish to join.

Councillor María de la Paz Couto explained that with the initiative “we want to facilitate access to this new sales channel for businesses that have been seriously affected by the health crisis, in addition to grouping the variety and offer of the sector in an online platform that will help revive the local economy.”

Couto has ensured that “the objective is for as many shops as possible to join the platform.

Initially, we announced the free use of this new tool during the first three months; and now we are going one step further by extending that period until the end of the year.”

RETAIL APPLICATION: Free new online sales platform for local businesses.

Victoria, Francisco Salado, has reiterated “the importance of supporting the retail sector with direct actions such as this one, which will promote local businesses and, therefore, boost the economic activity of the municipality.” Salado also recalled that this initiative is included in the Plan Reactiva Rincón agreed by all political parties.

The establishments that join the initiative will obtain their own free sales APP, in addition to free maintenance until December 31.

The requirements to benefit from the initiative are to live in Rincon de la Victoria and to have provided the Declaración Responsable before the Registro General of the town hall.

AROUND 12pm on Wednesday, July 29, Fran Pastor was sailing his ‘beach cleaning’ boat in front of the western end of the Playa de Nerja beach, when he spotted a number of people on the shore desperately gesturing to him.

He noticed, about 150 metres away from the shore, there was a young man, about 30 years old, who was struggling to stay afloat. Apparently, he had suffered cramp in his leg which was causing him great pain.

Without thinking twice, he raised the nets he uses to remove the debris and managed to pull the young man onto the boat.

He quickly took him to the shore, where a Guardia Civil patrol had already arrived.

Photo competition THE Almuñecar Town Hall has announced the sixth Photography Prize, ‘Nino Rodríguez,’ in order to promote and publicise the tourism offer through the participating photographs, which reflect the landscape, historical, cultural, gastronomic, ethnographic and values of the tourist destination.

Among the requirements is that the theme of the works presented will be on the tourist wealth of the towns of La Herradura and Almuñecar: people, landscapes, historical and natural heritage, festivals, customs, popular celebrations and everything that may reflect the tourist attractions of the municipality.

The photographs must be in colour or monochrome, including black and white or toned mono colour, and should not have been selected or awarded in any other contest. Photographs or collections containing three to five photographs will be presented by each of the contestants so that different themes and aspects of the tourist destination can be accommodated. A maximum of three-unit works or collections per participant is required.

The works can be presented, until August 6, at La Herradura Civic Centre, C/Prieto Moreno, from 9.30am to 2pm in person or by post is also acceptable.

Dress for the occasion THE Andalucian Youth Council (IAJ) has launched a new campaign ‘No matter what you wear, dress for the occasion.’

“This is a campaign promoted by the IAJ for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections,” explained councillor for Youth, María Isabel Ruiz.

The campaign, which will visit 66 municipalities throughout Andalucia, is all about awareness-raising activities supported by material specifically designed for it.

Organisations with considerable experience in this area such as the Red Cross, Doctors of the World, Anti-AIDS Committee and many more have helped to prepare the campaign material.

The initiative seeks to approach adolescents and young people in places of youth concentration during this time of year, building interactive and creative spaces where, in addition to receiving information, young people can learn to modify a number of erroneous beliefs that hurt long-term relationships.

IN BLOOM TOMORROW (Friday July 31) the First Andalucia in Flower Awards will be presented at the Felipe VI Auditorium and guest of honour will be a minister in the Junta de Andalucia Government, Elías Bendodo.

The initiative is promoted by AMJA, the Multisectorial Association of Andalucian Gardening and aims to promote, protect, improve and enhance the value of green spaces in the municipalities of Andalucia.

Andalucia in Flower also recognises this work of the municipalities who plant flowers, shrubs and trees throughout their towns.

New lease of life THE old railway station in Malaga is to be transformed and given a new lease of life.

The locomotive station, after being abandoned for decades, will become a hotel in Malaga.

Adif Alta Velocidad, the railway infrastructure manager, auctioned off the project for this space, specifically for the construction and operation of a hotel.

The starting price is €9.8 million with a lease of 30 years.

As reported by Sur, the station has a square footage of approximately 3,000 metres. It will also become the second biggest tourist accommodation for

Sector support ALMUÑECAR Town Hall has already begun to return to the hospitality businessmen, part of the rate of terraces that were paid prior to the State of Alarm, to show support to the sectors most affected by Covid, as reported by the councillor for Finance, Rafael Caballero.

Caballero has stated that after the decision to suspend this rate, from March 14 to December 31, 2020, “we have made the necessary efforts to proceed with this refund without the owners having had to claim said amount,” highlighted the

head of the treasury, who confirmed that there are 18 establishments which have already received the refund, amounting to €11,864.73.

Rafael Caballero recalled that, along with the exemption from the fee, the town hall also decided to approve the expansion of the terraces until September 30 “as a measure of support for the sector and so that the terraces can maintain the safety distances required by the health authorities,” he pointed out.

Adif will award the project to the highest bidder and after an optimal technical evaluation, in terms of the technical proposal, implementation, which must add up to a minimum of 60 points. The deadline for submitting offers will end on October 31.

According to the appraisal carried out by the Ministry of Transport, the preparation of the project and the obtaining of the work permits will be at least a two-year period. Construction of the hotel will take another two years.

Once the works have been completed, they will begin to count down for the 30 years operation lease.

PERFECT LOCATION: Spanish superstar Paz Vega to star in film.

‘LA CASA DEL CARACOL,’ the first film by the Malaga filmmaker Macarena Astorga, will have part of its filming in the Axarquia town of Alfarnatejo.

This is the first film that will be recorded after the pandemic in the province of Malaga and which stars Paz Vega and Javier Rey. During the confinement, Axarquia Film Office offered the producer an endless number of photographs with different locations that were subsequently visited by the technical and managerial team of the film.

The President of the Mancomunidad Axarquia, José Juan Jiménez, has highlighted the importance of recording this film in Axarquia, pointing out the opportunity that the interior of the region has to offer its beauty and uniqueness through the film sector.

Jiménez also wanted to emphasise that at the moment “the region is a safe destination both for tourism and for hosting any kind of filming.”

TORTURE CHAMBER: Seven torture containers found.

POLICE in Spain are investigating whether a gang suspected of kidnap and torture may have operated in the Malaga Province.

So far, six people have been arrested in the Netherlands and seven soundproof transport cargos have been seized.

In a joint police investigation with Spanish and Dutch authorities, a Dutch criminal group has been dismantled. This group allegedly resorted to torture and kidnap in settling accounts between rival gangs and are believed to be responsible for several murders carried out

on the Costa del Sol over the last few years.

The six detainees in the Netherlands have been arrested in connection with the Moroccan mafia, which is dedicated to trafficking drugs between the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. In a chilling seizure, an additional seven transport containers were found. All of these vessels are soundproofed and equipped with torture chairs to immobilise individuals. For example, the containers had shackles anchored to the ground or chairs with straps, as well as tools and utensils to attack them.

Botellon banned STREET drinking in souther n Spain has been officially prohibited by the president of the Junta de Andalucia, Juana Moreno.

More commonly known as ‘botellon,’ this is an activity typically practised by youngsters in Spain. Young adults and teens will normally congregate in public areas to socialise whilst drinking alcohol, however, this common practice has now been prohibited.

Moreno has officially branded this activity during the health crisis as a harmful and dangerous pastime. In a bid to reduce the likelihood of transmission, Moreno is also considering limiting nightlife across the autonomous community.

Swim for India THE Sports Department of Rincón de la Victoria Town Hall and the Association Brazadas Solidarias, launched the challenge of the swimming season on Monday, July 27, with the ‘Travesía Brazadas Solidarias España-India 2020'.’

Councillor Antonio José Martín, together with the president of the Association ‘Brazadas Solidarias,’ Christian Jongeneel, presented the challenge calling all swimmers with a spirit of solidarity to swim during August to

cover the 8,350 kilometres that connect both countries by sea and help the people who are suffering in impoverished areas of rural India.

The long-distance swimmer, Jongeneel, stressed that this is “the most important challenge for the organisation in its 10 years of existence,” and added, “Not only because of the distance, for wanting to add up those 8,350 kilometres, which are many and for which we need the participation of thousands of swimmers, but also because the situation of millions of people in rural India is desperate.”

Secret compartments COCAINE dealers on the Costa del Sol who used ‘adapted’ cars to ‘discreetly’ transport their supply have been arrested.

The Guardia Civil, under ‘Operation Felix’ have successfully dismantled a trafficking network that allegedly transported cocaine from Malaga to other Andalucian cities in cars with secret compartments to hide their stash.

who are believed to have moved four to eight kilos of cocaine a month.

It all began during the lockdown in Spain when a man tried to evade the police checkpoint in Nerja, Malaga. He tried to flee but police managed to stop him, when they searched his vehicle, they found a box containing four kilos of marihuana. An investigation unearthed the extent of the operation.

Therefore, it must be verified that the label of the sunglasses refers to the ISO 12312 standard and includes the CE marking. This symbol indicates that the glasses comply with the safety standards and legal requirements to be marketed in the European Union.

All sunglasses that are marketed must include in their mandatory labeling the following labels: Sunglasses Model Identification, manufacturer or supplier, maintenance and care instructions, indications of use restrictions and the type of filter used (polarised, photometric or gradient) and its category.

By Pete Woodall THE Andalucia Bird Society have appointed Neil A Hill as their next conservation officer. A professional wildlife biologist by training and a keen birdwatcher by nature, Neil will be responsible for the society’s ever growing support of conservation projects in Andalucia.

Outdoors man Neil is certainly the man for the job.

His skills and academic qualifications are numerous. Previously a conservation officer for Greater Manchester and Merseyside, the head of a conservation project in the New Forest and more locally the director of the Iberian Lynx conservation project, SOS Lynx.

Neil A Hill, appointed new ABS conservation officer.

Neil has participated in similar undertakings in France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Ad-

ditionally he also teaches bush craft and survival skills to both adults and youngsters.

The English-speaking, non-profit Andalucia Bird Society, registered in 2008, is for both residents and visitors to Andalucia regardless of their ornithological knowledge.

Restaurant capacity IN a surprise decision, the Andalucia Government has introduced a number of new measures which will affect the hospitality industry once again.

The most wide-reaching decision will see the capacity of ‘bares de copas’ and nightclubs cut from 75 to 60 per cent and table sizes reduced from 25 to 12 in restaurants whilst nightclubs will need to keep a register of guests’ details

so that they may be contacted in the event of an outbreak of coronavirus.

Once again, the ordering of drinks at bars has been banned and drinks will have to be ordered at a pre-assigned table.

False documents

NOT TRUE: Velez-Malaga Town Hall began a disciplinary procedure.

AN administrative assistant from the Velez-Malaga Town Hall will go to prison for allegedly falsifying two public documents in oppositions by the Diputación Provincial de Malaga.

The judge who is investigating the case, ordered provisional arrest last Tuesday, July 21, after taking his statement.

According to the investigation, this municipal worker had submitted an application for a temporary employment exchange to practise as a lawyer for the Diputación de Malaga, and after passing the initial tests he presented two certificates for the evaluation of the merits.

Both documents, which supposedly accredited that he had served as legal adviser in the Velez-Malaga Town Hall, had the signature of the municipal secre-

tary and the then mayor, María Salomé Arroyo, although according to the investigation the documents had been falsified. Specifically, it states that the documents had been falsified since ‘the signatures were not autographs but were scanned in various original ways and carried out using photomechanical processes.’

In a second phase of the procedure, this official provided a new document in which his head of service in the Environmental department confirms that he provided services related to the law degree in said department.

The events, which took place at the end of 2017, were discovered as a result of the complaint of another applicant for the position.

THE president of the PP of Velez-Malaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, has demanded that the mayor open a disciplinary file against the head of the Local Police, José Andrés Montoya, after the police chief issued a series of insults against him in the media as a result of the councillor requesting his dismissal due to poor organisation skills.

Delgado Bonilla was surprised at the reaction to the criticism made this week by the PP about Ve l e z - M a l a g a ’ s L o c a l P o l i c e and the growing insecurity that residents are experiencing.

However, the biggest surprise came when Montoya insulted the PP spokesman “with a badass style and a cool tone that will obviously have consequences,” assured the councillor.

“In the Local Police regulations it is clearly established that disregard for their superiors is a very serious offence and, like it or not, a councillor of the Velez Town Hall is a public authority,”

THE president of the Association of German Speakers of Almuñecar and La Herradura, Ueli Amstad, has delivered to the parish priest and head of Cáritas Parroquial de Almuñecar, Vicente Guerrero, a donation of €1,000 obtained in the ‘Corona 5’ charity programme.

“We approached our members with the idea that we hardly spent any money during confinement and everyone could donate €5. The willingness of our members to donate far exceeded our expectations. The idea is successful and will continue,” said the president of the group.

IN the last week, the Plenary Session of the Nerja Town Hall has approved different measures framed in its Shock Plan.

In this order of things, the town hall will give aid to young people in a situation of economic vulnerability and or at risk of social exclusion.

These grants will be for the payment of the rent or the mortgage, endowed with €50,000.

This same amount has been approved to help women victims of gender violence in situations of

economic vulnerability and or at risk of social exclusion.

On the other hand, the town hall will also help families in the same situations, to which it will allocate €15,000 to pay for childcare. Finally, they have approved an aid package for school supplies endowed with €50,000.

All of this aid is included in the Municipal Shock Plan for the Covid-19 crisis, drawn up by the Popular Party, Adelante, Ciudadanos and Vox.

“I fell in love with Flamenco when I was 14 while on holiday with my mother and brother in Tossa de Mar. They were practising on huge boards on the beach. That was my first love of Spain and Flamenco and I’ve been fascinated ever since.

“I can’t wait to go back to Spain. I miss opening the curtains in the morning and saying to myself ‘there’s Spain.’

Wonderbirds Show is an online chat show which has amassed almost two million views in just 10 weeks, and is hosted by Sherrie and friends Harriet Thorpe, Debbie Arnold and Dee Anderson.

Guests have included Paul O’Grady, Gok Wan, Ann Mitchell and Brenda Blethyn.

“The idea initially came about as something to do during lockdown,” said Sherrie.

“We were talking one day and said ‘let’s do an online show.’ We realised everyone must have been feeling the same as us, lonely, sad and scared. We thought this would be fun and a great way to entertain and include people.

Despite four shows a week, Sherrie still finds time to write for Yours, and together with Dee, created an animated version of Wonderbirds accompanied by a book.

Beach Social Distancing Praised

CHIPIONA BEACH: Beachgoers are keeping a safe distance.

CHIPIONA BEACH in Cadiz has been featured on Sky News as an example of how social distancing on Spain’s beaches can and does work.

More than one million followers have seen a tweet by Juanma Moreno, President of the Junta da Andalucia where he shows the video which was taken by a drone and said in his tweet; “#Andalucia is a safe destination and an example of

responsibility. These impressive aerial pictures taken by @SkyNews are proof of it.

We ask the United Kingdom government and its PM @BorisJohnson to think over and reconsider their decision.”

He hopes that this and an appeal to the Spanish government will help to obtain permission for exclusion from quarantine for travellers from the province who fly to the UK.

Increased bilateral trade AN agreement between Turkey and Spain should result in an increase in bilateral trade from €11 billion to €20 billion according to Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan.

The minister said “We can boost joint trade in various sectors such as automotive, clothing, iron and steel, electronic, furniture and food.”

She also encouraged Spanish companies to submit proposals with regards to railway projects as they have proven their ability and experience in other countries.

In addition, both ministers agreed in a conference call to work together in third party countries.

Spanish Fishing Fleet SPAIN’S fishing fleets don’t just operate in the Mediterranean as there are a number of vessels all over the world, including Seychelles, where they search for big catches of tuna. One company uses West African crew but at the latest change over, 97 out of 207 new crew were tested positive for Covid-19 and their vessels were impounded and used to quarantine the active cases.

This has resulted in lower catches and increased medical, travel and transport costs according to a company spokesperson.

Fire sale ACCORDING to a report in the Sunday Times, Rolls-Royce engines are looking to make a quick sale of Spanish subsidiary ITP Aero which produces engine parts for aircraft, helicopters and ships in order to try to improve financial liquidity.

Undercover Investigation BUSINESSMAN Mike Ashley, owner of the Frasers Group, Sports Direct and Newcastle United is rarely out of the news and this time it is sug­ gested that his company is paying workers at its warehouse less than the minimum wage.

Five years ago, The Guardian newspaper undertook an undercov­ er investigation into the warehouse in Shirebrook Mansfield which it is suggested prompted the company to review its working practices and workers did receive an element of back pay.

Now the newspaper has sent in another undercover team and whilst acknowledging that things have got better, there is an allegation that workers there may once again not be paid the legal minimum wage.

In what is possibly a tenuous ob­ servation, The Guardian reporter has suggested that because the staff are not paid for their 30­minute breaks during the day and allegedly are not allowed out of the ware­ house during those breaks, it could be that they should receive addi­ tional payment.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

A Frasers Group spokesman told The Guardian that its warehouse workers did not have to be paid for the breaks and that the business had “no rule preventing staff leav­ ing the warehouse during a rest break.”

It also acknowledged The Guardian article in a statement to the Stock Exchange saying “We of course take any comments about our workplace conditions very seri­ ously and will investigate them as appropriate, in line with all applica­ ble laws and regulations.”

THE mayor of Toledo, Milagros Tolón welcomed the Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz to the City Hall for the formal installation of Toledo as the European Capital of So­ cial Economy.

THE largest department store chain in Europe, Spain’s El Corte Inglés tradi­ tionally holds its annual shareholders meeting at the end of August, but brought the date forward to Sunday July 26 with the majority of shareholders attending digi­ tally.

Overall profits for the fi­ nancial year (March 2019 to February 2020) are up by just over 20 per cent and represent the most success­ ful year of trading since 2010.

by John Smith THE British Prime Minister Boris Johnson plans to attack obesity, not just in c h i l d re n b u t i n a d u l t s a s well.

He is reportedly planning on pass­ ing a law requiring all places that sell food (including takeaways) and em­ ploy 250 staff or more to display the number of calories in each dish on their menus.

It is possible that this will then be extended to included alcoholic drinks

BUSINESS IN THE Almeria Property Finder, Albox “WE are busier now than before lockdown, and sales are good,” Almeria Property Finder owner Cathie Saunders told EWN. Even during the lockdown period, the agency had plenty of work and sales continued.

The only changes as a result of the health crisis have been the social distancing, mask wearing and sanitising procedures, and viewings are now “a little different.”

Demand from buyers is currently so buoy-

ant that Cathie’s main concern is having enough new properties on the books to meet that.

In fact Cathie puts the boom in business down to the Covid-19 situation.

“Buyers are more focused and more determined to find a property than at the beginning of the year.

“A lot of people who were on the fence due to Brexit have now had time to think about it and have decided to just go for it.”

Costa del Sol by the demand for both flooring and furniture and from their point of view people are visiting with the intention to buy rather then just to look around.

Their biggest problem is obtaining stocks as many of their suppliers are not working at full capacity, but apart from that, they have no reason to complain.

CORRINNE GREEN and partner Richard run Furniture World Estepona and were closed all during lockdown although they still operate a mail order barbecue business which boomed as the weather got warmer.

CRAIG LONGSTAFF and his wife Nicola from Fishy Fishy, in Moraira, have a positive take on the situation “Although our terrace has been cut to 50 per cent capacity, allowing only six tables, we have seen a drop from being 50 or 60 per cent down to 20 per cent.

However, I don’t think this summer will get back to normal,” said Craig who also pointed out that “It’s not too bad, one change is that Nicola and I have had to go from only working three or four hours a day to now working eight to 10 hours a day. Our staff are now all off ERTE, but down to the only hours we are able to pay them.”

When asked about the news of quarantine for UK travellers he said “We haven’t seen the effects of it yet, but friends from other businesses have already had cancellations,” and added, “We will get by as we are a family business, but unfortunately some businesses will not survive.”

Pedro Salvat, Toldos Guardamar THE lockdown had a very significant impact on Toldos Guardamar, the company’s director Pedro Salvat told EWN, especially because a good many of their customers are British, Belgian or other foreign nationalities.

The many orders they had before the State of Alarm came into force had to be held on “standby” due to the restrictions.

Now however the team is twice as busy as before lockdown.

Not that they were idle during the lockdown. In fact far from it. Paid for out of its

MORE than a month after Spain’s long, and for many tough, State of Alarm came to an end and the lockdown was lifted, the Euro Weekly News has been speaking to businesses to find out how they are getting on in the ‘new normal.’

We wanted to know what is different. How does the situation for businesses of all kinds now compare with how things were going before the Covid-19 pandemic impacted on pretty much every aspect of daily life?

Have companies had to make a lot of changes to how they operate, or are things rolling along much as they used to?

Olive Properties, Bedar

Almeria

BUSINESS for estate agency Olive Properties is different now from February, says company coowner Joanne Desmond, but the current situation seems really positive.

“We are having a huge volume of enquiries,” Joanne told EWN. “Obviously not all clients can travel yet. However, things look very promising and clients are keen to get here. We are seeing an increase in people visiting and the demand is high.”

In terms of changes which Olive Properties has undergone as a result of the pandemic, again it is all for the good.

“We were quieter, but it gave us the time to do the jobs we were too busy to do before,” Joanne said.

“We have fine-tuned the business over the last three months and organised things. We feel more efficient as a team as a result.

“We did virtual viewings and videos, which resulted in sales during lockdown, and we are still offering this service and will continue to as a new avenue.”

Joanna is optimistic about the rest of 2020.

“As a business we are now ready for a positive and busy second half of the year. We are experiencing a lot of interest from foreign buyers, and Spanish also. We feel the end of the year will be very busy and will make up for the quieter months we experienced. We are full of energy and already busy!”

Michelle Johnstone Costa del Sol THE last time we spoke with Michelle who with husband Tony operates Ace of Shades, she was a bit worried about the future as there were a number of restrictions of the work that the company could undertake.

Now however she says that they are extremely busy thanks to the heat, mosquitoes and sadly some burglaries and they can’t install screens, awnings and shutters quickly enough.

There will be fewer holiday home owners arriving from the UK, but Michelle is very optimistic about the future and the fact that there is still a large potential market for the company.

And what specific changes have businesses had to introduce?

Has the effect of the coronavirus situation simply been negative, or have there in fact been some positives, prompting businesses to look at how they could be doing things better?

We also asked businesses where they think we go from here.

Covid-19 has thrown the world into uncertain times, but what’s clear is that the business community here in Spain is resilient and motivated to move forward.

Harris Furnishings, Pedreguer Costa Blanca North JAYNE HARRIS who owns Harris Furnishings, a furniture retail and reupholstering business in Pedreguer with husband Dave, said, “We have been extremely busy since reopening. I think because people have been stuck indoors critiquing their homes so when they could get out they were ready for a change.

“Everything here is working fine, we are following health measures which is reassuring to customers as they know that they are in a safe place. Our retail side has been quieter but this is actually the quietest time for that sector each year, so there is not much change,” said Jayne.

She added, “I do think that the news over the weekend will affect business as 50 per cent of our customers are people travelling here from the UK who have holiday homes.”

Paul Garrod, Solar Solutions Costa Blanca South Spain “EVERYONE has been affected by the three-month lockdown,” Solar Solutions Spain’s Paul Garrod says, but the main issue for his company after the State of Alarm came to an end was getting hold of stock.

The restrictions on transport and movement meant shipping came to a halt.

The situation is now getting back to normal, Paul explained, and Solar Solutions Spain is busy and working the same way as before the pandemic.

But Paul admits that recent fresh outbreaks of the virus have got him concerned another lockdown could happen.

“If there’s a second wave it will be worse than the first,” he believes, adding, “people need to adhere to the rules.”

Policlinica Omega, Campello DUSTY ATKINSON from Policlínica Omega, in Campello, was keen to point out that “as we are in healthcare we have been very much in demand as our clients wish to see their psychologist or nutritionist. Also, we offer Covid testing so that people can see if they have been infected with the virus and this has understandably been extremely popular.”

She added, “We were very well prepared when we opened and put in place all the health measures required. People were nervous at first but once they realised they were in a

When the State of Alarm came into force there were two weeks when the company wasn’t allowed to operate, but then government authorisation as a transporter of essential items allowed the firm to continue working.

The problem, Steve explained, was that while clients’ belongings could be moved, people themselves had to stay put. The result was very crowded Swift Removals’ warehouses until the restrictions were eased.

Business is now 80 per cent back to normal, Steve reported. “We’re very lucky. We have a lot of local work, moving people around Spain.”

Steve says the recent outbreaks make the future an unknown. “You can’t control the future, so you just have to see what tomorrow brings.”

Samantha Bayley SAMANTHA runs her own business The Painted Kitchen where she renovates existing kitchens and also works with husband Joe who supplies completely new kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms.

Her feeling is that generally, business is quite good as during lockdown people fell out of love with their kitchens and are now looking for a change.

THE name Big M Promotions is synonymous with Martyn Wood who has been promoting live events on the Costa del Sol for many years.

Speaking to him about the new normality highlights a problem that has affected so many promoters and entertainers in Spain as basically, his diary which was originally full for the spring and summer of this year is empty.

He has one event, the Celtic Night in the Mijas Pueblo Auditorium on August 8 and then nothing at the moment until November, but he is keeping cheerful and hoping things will get easier soon.

Whilst in lockdown, the couple were eventually able to be in the workshop which meant they could prepare material for installation which they are now doing subject to strict hygiene rules.

If some toe rag attacks or blows up a bunch of innocent civilians screaming ‘Allah Akbar, ‘or ‘death to the infidels’ the perpetrator is an Islamist involved in the execution of Jihad.

OK? You don’t need any high level expensive board meeting to work out some way of renaming them out of existence simply because the less militant members of a religion may be ‘offended.’

HOMELESS: PC ‘morons’ recommend referring to people living on the streets as ‘outdoor urban dwellers.’

Cabinet holding a meeting to discuss whether the less militant Germans may be offended if we referred to the perpetrators as Nazis? If it quacks like one and walks like one it is one, ok? We’re in a war here and the sooner our pathetic naive leaders come to terms with it, the sooner we may have just a chance of finishing up with our culture and heritage intact.

Political Correctness will be the death knoll of the West. Just recently a children’s

entertainer friend of mine was instructed to no longer refer to his audience as Girls and Boys! What the hell does he do when he wants audience participation from different genders? Ask for the ‘not sures’ to come up on stage!? I believe we’ve confused our youngsters quite enough already, without turning their light entertainment into some adult LGBT conflict. I personally think it’s a form of child abuse.

If I were at the helm I would seriously be

pursuing some form of prosecution. At this point I’d just like to throw in a few more PC changes recommended by similar morons. Homeless people should be referred to as ‘Outdoor Urban Dwellers.’ Bisexual prostitutes become ‘Equal Opportunity Sex Workers.’ The poor are ‘Economically Marginalised.’ Being drunk is ‘Chemically Inconvenienced.’ Criminals are ‘Behaviorally Challenged.’ Fat people, ‘Metabolic Overachievers.’ Housewives, ‘Domestic Engineers.’ Illegal aliens, ‘Undocumented Migrants.’ And so on. Makes you lose the will don’t it? Excuse me while I go off to get severely chemically inconvenienced!

Said my final goodbye to my dear friend Geoffrey Kenion this week. The ceremony was held in the picturesque tranquility of Soller cemetery and was attended by many of his close friends and family.

His loving wife Sallyann oversaw the whole occasion with a wonderful dignified serenity and children Simon, Joseph, Rachel and Ella, all delivered moving tributes to their Dad. A fitting send off to a much loved and respected local icon.

RIP Geoff. They did you proud.

OUR VIEW Knee jerk reaction

THE weekend brought a shock, sharp turnaround in the decision the UK government made about lifting quarantine measures by an action to reinstate them, leaving British travellers and Spanish businesses reeling.

The decision was made due to two days of high numbers of infection across Spain that were mainly seen in Catalonia. As Monday arrived and the UK had firmly put their foot down Spanish authorities reassured that these outbreaks were under control.

Just as Brits were becoming accustomed to following the health measures in Spain and their panic began to dissipate, Boris Johnson’s own panic set in and a decision seems to have been made without sufficient time to allow people to even take in what is happening.

Sure, he could be making the right decision, he could be protecting his people. If this is the case we should definitely be giving him a virtual pat on the back instead of shooting him down or attacking him.

Some might also see an ulterior motive in that the government made the decision to protect themselves from any further derision with the way they handle the virus in the early stages.

In making this decision have they added another nail in the coffin for Spain’s tourism industry? If so, will this drag the UK’s travel industry with it?

Spain’s Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol were understandably seeing lower numbers than recent years gracing their beaches and bars, but companies had begun to find ways of working round that. Many had sunk the last of their money into remodelling to cover for safety measures in the gamble that it would pay off and lucky for some it had.

Maybe we should take a little time and ask that if our governments are just as confused as we are and can make such urgent and overreactive decisions, is there a chance they could easily lift it again before the week is through?

DEAR Euro Weekly News, I have to say that I entirely agree with Kevin Park (Issue 1827) about visitors not bothering about wearing masks or social distancing. They march down the middle of the pavement crowded together and we have to move out of the way, very often into the road.

Twice this week, I have gone into the centre of Fuengirola for shopping purposes. I was truly shocked and angered that so many people are simply not taking this virus seriously. Not only young people but older couples and whole families with no protection at all. And unfortunately, KP is quite right: they were all foreign tourists. Nearly all Spanish people, including visitors, were wearing masks and staying apart.

This was mid-morning: what on earth must it be like at night when folk have had a few drinks?

How many more deaths do they need in order to realise that this virus is still around? We, who live here, have abided by the rules for over three months. We didn’t go out except for essential shopping, we didn’t meet up with friends or family and so many businesses couldn’t survive and went bust. We didn’t go through all that for some uncaring, irresponsible visitors to come along and ruin it all again. Just imagine if the Costa del Sol had to

I do not necessarily agree with all that you write, only about 95 per cent of it, but defend your right of freedom of speech to say it. I remember you as a pop singer in my youth (that dates me) but you have excelled yourself as a journalist, controversial at times, but always writing what some people are afraid to even think. I must put you on the same pedestal as Richard Littlejohn of the Daily Mail, both of you reaching a far greater audience than me just talking to my mates. It’s time more people listened to the pair of you and said enough of this BLM, woke or whatever minority group (aided and abetted by rent-a-crowd) is shouting the loudest. MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man IF I hadn’t seen this happen live on TV I would not believe it. When asked during a White House press briefing on Tuesday about the federal prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell for her alleged role in recruiting, grooming and sexually abusing underage girls, President Donald Trump responded, “I just wish her well, frankly.”

To reassure me that I wasn’t hallucinating to this bizarre response to the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged accomplice, Trump said it again: “I wish her well.”

Maxwell has been charged with helping Jeffrey Epstein commit serious and grotesque crimes relating to the sexual abuse of children. Trump was personal friends with and used to party with Epstein. Trump once declared, “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”

I don’t care what you Trump supporters think of me. You cannot tell me these are

words you want to hear coming from the POTUS. He absolutely raving insane.

It is also outrageous that he has White House press conferences and talks about the pandemic without having either of his medical experts on stage with him.

A fellow doctor said the other day that, in the world of infectious diseases, Anthony Fauci is like a God. His knowledge is second to none. But obviously there is only room for one God to be at the lectern answering questions. Trouble is Trump’s answers are mostly lies and if not an out and out lie they are simply wrong.

Even Fox, his friendly news channel, ripped his lies to pieces. When being interviewed by Chris Wallace he simply called Trump out on every lie he told and there were quite a few. He has done a complete 180 on mask wearing. The list of rubbish he talks is endless.

The only time he seems to make any sense is when reading off a tele prompter.

Even then he reads like a child stumbling over words and repeating himself. When challenged he will use his favourite phrase ‘lots of people have said.’ He never actually says who they are.

So bring it on folks trying to defend him, to me he is a dangerous man and time will tell who’s right.

The higher temperatures and longer daylight hours change circadian rhythms within the body and this, European Sleep Research Society member Doctor Rafael del Rio explained, can cause difficulty getting to sleep or broken nights.

I ‘should’ be happy, or so I’m told. I have a fantastic family, a good job and I live in the sunshine. I have good days and bad days. But the bad days seem to roll into one at the moment with no end in sight.

The lows feel inescapable, though.

It’s like walking through thick tar.

You can see the end of the road, but it feels impossible to reach it. Each step takes an inordinate amount of effort and each moment you’re stuck in the thick, sticky, black darkness, you feel yourself sinking lower and lower. There are warning signs.

It’ll start with a nagging feeling of frustration, for me. Frustrated with the pace of life, frustrated with my home, frustrated with the food I eat, the body.

And then it builds bigger and bigger a kind of inescapable fog, clouding my thoughts and not letting me sleep.

Before I know it, I’m stuck in the deep black tar of a low and imagining cracks spreading across ceilings.

Ideas, ideas and ideas keep popping into my head, they can be grandiose or, like

mine, subtle, like watercolour paint mixing on a palette. They’re a lot less frightening when you realise what they are - just an overabundance of particular chemicals in your mind, tricking your head into over analysing every signal you have picked up.

When I am happy, I will happily cook, bake, paint, laugh, joke, create, write and passionately debate almost anything. I will dance around the room and screech along to my favourite songs.

When I’m not happy, I withdraw completely into myself and become a determined introvert. I don’t wish to do anything, and the effort of doing something is intensely crucifying. The problem is, it’s not a black and white kind of situation. When I’m sad, it’s not like everything ceases to amuse me.

When I’m happy, it’s not like the world doesn’t occasionally bore me.

So. 29. The age I never thought I’d reach. Never really wanted to reach.

There are signs - as I’d known all along but never really wished to entertain - that I’m not going to get better.

This is the long haul. Up, down, in never ending succession, for the rest of my days. It’s exhausting, you know?

And I think the most troubling part is that even now, nearly 20 years after I realised I was different from the rest, and nine years after I was officially diagnosed, the world is still deeply distrustful of anyone with a mental illness.

Is she reliable? Can we count on her?

Will she let us down last minute? Wonder what her mood will be like today?

So I think it’s safe to say Bipolar at 19 and Bipolar at 29 have two things in common; 1) loneliness in my diagnosis and 2) that the world is still not quite ready to be accommodating of bipolar (or perhaps, any mental illness).

Pole position MANCHESTER: The inaugural World Cup of Walking Football will take place here next year.

Training sessions A QUIET week for walking football with a lot of players on holiday so only training sessions and no matches.

However next Monday August 4 sees a mini tournament at Benahavis with Smiles’ two teams and Calahonda joining local newcomers to the League Benahavis,who will also field two teams.

This is part of the build up to the New Walking Football League which kicks off on the weekend

of September 5/6.

Nerja and Aston Viñuela have still not had a training session due to Council Polideportivos still being closed and will be at a disadvantage when the League does kick off having had little or no match practice.

While the clubs wait for the League sponorship deal to be announced Mark Colman of Smiles announced that the inaugural World Cup of Walking Foot-

ball would be held in May next year at the Etihad Training Complex, Manchester.

The Federation International Walking Football Association are aware of our Walking Football League in southern Spain and will look for a team of players from that League to represent Spain in the World Cup.
