Easy access Fishy business THE Department of Tourism and Beaches of the Almuñecar Town Hall continues to improve the beaches of the town.

This time it was the turn of the Marina del Este beach where almost €30,000 will be invested in improvements such as the provision of a lifeguard station and the installation of an accessible bathroom.

To this will be added soon a ramp that will improve accessibility to the aforementioned beach.

Councillor Daniel Barbero said, “the services and improvements that we carry out on this beach will represent a leap forward in the safety and quality of the beach, which is widely used by residents of the Marina del Este environment and also by dozens of divers who want to do dives in the Punta de la Mona area.”

THE Department of the Environment of the Algarrobo Town Hall, in collaboration with the environmental consultant Quesada & Pastor Consultores, will launch in July and August a series of Environmental Education sessions on the care of our coastline and marine species.

On July 24, on the beach of Mezquitilla, an environmental education and fisheries awareness activity will take place.

COUNCILLOR for Culture and Education in Almuñecar, Alberto García Gilabert, was in charge of presiding over the act of tribute to the late Granada writer, José García Ladrón de Guevara, which was held in the gardens of the ‘El Majuelo’ Park in Almuñecar and was attended by the professor at the University of Granada, Antonio Chicharro Chamorro, and the writer, Arcadio Ortega Muñoz.

García Gilabert stated it was an honour to remember García Ladrón de Guevara who showed his love for Almuñecar with beautiful poems.

LIFEGUARDS from Torre del Mar managed to avoid a tragedy when they rescued several bathers in trouble.

The events occurred on Tuesday, July 21, on the beach next to the Torre del Mar fairground.

Despite a red flag flying along this particular stretch due to high winds and strong waves, a girl believed to be about 13, entered the water to swim. She quickly began struggling when trying to get out of the sea, and a group of young people on boards nearby attempted to help.

Unfortunately, they too got into trouble. The lifeguards however managed to get them all to the shore and to safety.

THE government of Andalucia will hand out free face masks to elders in order to help reduce the risk of them contracting the coronavirus.

Those over the age of 80 can go to pharmacies across the autonomous community and request them for free.

Those over the age of 65 who are pensioners or suffer from some previous pathology that may be aggravated by Covid19, can also benefit from this new policy. However, the distribution of free masks in pharmacies will begin with those over the age of 80 in order to avoid crowds.

HEALTH authorities in Axarquia are investigating a coronavirus outbreak, in which five positives have been confirmed, after a birthday party in Torre del Mar. According to Ser Axarquia, the celebration occurred last week.

One of the guests, after showing symptoms, has tested positive. She then alerted the rest of the people with whom she has had contact so that they can isolate themselves and do tests to check if they have contracted the virus.

In recent days, five positives have been confirmed and some 40 people, according to health sources, are being investigated .

Slopes spruced up EL BALCÓN DE EUROPA remains at the heart of tourism in Nerja.

In contrast to normal summers, the area is much quieter due to the lower influx of tourists.

As such, the town hall is making the most of the opportunity to make the emblematic viewpoint over the Mediterranean look as good as possible.

This week, the garden areas surrounding the promenade built on the remains of an old Arab farmhouse, which later became a battery or castle until its destruction by the English in 1810, have been spruced up with the help of a crane due to the difficulty accessing the area. Councillor for Municipal Services, Gema García, explained “an exhaustive cleaning of the landscaped areas surrounding the Balcón de Europa promenade is being carried out,” and added: “We continue with the maintenance and beautification actions of the municipality, especially in the areas with the greatest influx of residents and visitors.”

The works are being carried out early in the morning to cause less inconvenience.

Exciting exhibition THE exhibition of the painter Magdalena Romero is open in the Municipal Exhibition Hall of Nerja until August 8, from 11am to 2pm, and from 6.30pm to 10pm.

The room is located at Calle Almirante Ferrándiz, 14, known as Calle Cristo.

Magdalena is a great watercolourist, her paintings abound in colour and her work conveys joy, depth and transparency.

She studied Fine Arts in Sevilla and there she played other techniques, but watercolour is what represents her.

She has many exhibitions to her credit and enjoys numerous awards and distinctions, which from a young age endorse her career.

She is a teacher of painting in different municipalities of the Axarquia, including Nerja.

New actions

THE Comisión Técnica Reactiva of Rincon de la Victoria has decided to keep the town’s children’s playgrounds closed and not to hold certain sports activities due to the possibility that safety cannot be guaranteed against possible Covid infection.

The commission, chaired by the mayor, Francisco Salado, has determined that in the face of the emergency situation, sanitary security measures cannot be relaxed, especially when it is not possible to disinfect playgrounds at the risk of contagion they present or maintaining control of capacity at high participation sports events.

“We have to remain aware,

Clean point WASTE will be monitored and controlled in Rincon de la Victoria to prevent the ‘unfriendly practice’ of dumping certain items.

The council has launched a new surveillance campaign to reduce the presence of “bulky waste, household goods or pruning on public roads in the town.”

Local Police Councillor, Borja Ortiz (PP), said the initiative is “about putting a stop to the increase in this kind of waste which has occurred in recent times and creates a very bad image for the town.”

Mayor, Francisco Salado (PP) urged the public to do their bit “to prevent this unfriendly practice from becoming the daily keynote while posing a risk to public health.”

He added: “We will not allow this kind of concentration of discharges on streets and avenues.”

“Here you will be given an identifier code, which will allow the incident to be tracked. Through this code agents will be able to verify if their removal to the cleaning service has indeed been required,” said councillor for the Environment, Sergio Díaz (PP).

He also highlighted that the Diputación de Málaga has been working for two years on a strategy to combat depopulation, with different lines of action to combat the digital divide, promote the establishment of companies in the towns, create centres of tourist attraction and promote agri-food companies.

Salado has detailed a diagnosis of the depopulation situation in the province, which shows that 45 municipalities of the 103 that make up the province have been suffering a population loss for 20 years.

The diagnosis also reflects that there are 18 towns which have lost between 10 and 20 per cent of their population since 2000, and another 19 which have lost up to 10 per cent of their inhabitants.

Caring for kids VELEZ-MALAGA Town Hall and the Consejería de Igualdad, have signed an agreement for the development of the ‘Programa de tratamiento a familias con menores en situación de riesgo o desprotección.’ The objective of which is to respond to the care needs of minors in the town.

The councillor for Social Rights and Equality, Víctor González, explains that there are three programmes: the ‘Psychotherapeutic treatment or Family treatment team,’ which treats families with indicators of abuse; the ‘Complementation Project,’ based on families in which, once the intervention has

ended; and ‘Family reunification,’ which consists of families starting a reunification process with the children.

Víctor González highlighted “that these programmes give families access to specific treatment that allows the acquisition of rehabilitation guidelines. This helps families at risk, which could affect the well-being of minors.”

González highlighted that the objectives are “to train the family to provide proper care to minors, guaranteeing their safety and basic integrity. Thanks to this, it is possible for the family to function autonomously, and for minors to have adequate care and attention,” added the councillor.

Crisis management THE mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has shown his outrage at the plans of the government to recover the remaining treasury of the municipalities in exchange for allowing a part to be spent, which he describes as “unacceptable blackmail.”

“We are not going to allow this interference in our management, the residents of Nerja are not going to allow them to appropriate our savings.”

The remaining cash from the Nerja Town Hall amounts to €16,842,101.86.

He has announced a proposal to urge

the government of Spain to allow the town halls to manage their own resources, “which we hope will support all the political groups of the corporation, as they have done twice before.”

Armijo points out that what the government has to do is “stop being incompetent and effectively manage the economic crisis that is upon us. It must provide resources to the town halls, as an administration closer to the residents, so that we can respond to their needs, making use of our own resources, which we have generated them for.”

Stranded dolphin Swim for ALS A V E RY s i c k d o l p h i n became stranded on the Misericordia Beach in Malaga City.

The dolphin was still alive, but weak, frail and covered in external parasites.

Beach-goers found the young striped dolphin on the Misericordia beach on Tuesday mor ning, July 21, and the police were called.

The animal was then taken to CREMA, a centre for rehabilitation of marine animals, where it still remains.

Unfortunately, the dolphin’s chances were not looking too good at the time of going to press, as it seemed to be in the final stages of a long-term illness, which explains its weakened state.

The striped dolphin is a species commonly found in the Malaga bay and in the

A GROUP of swimmers will cover the 21 kilometres that separate the Balcón de Europa from the town of Nerja and the Torre del Mar beach, in the neighbouring municipality of Vélez-Málaga, within the ‘21 kilómetros a nado contra la ELA’ event, a sports challenge whose objective is to raise funds for the association.

The event, organised by this group - made up of friends and family of Miguel Ángel Roldán Marín, an athlete who suffers from ALS - will be held on a date yet to be determined between August 18 and 25 and which will be set according to weather conditions and sea conditions. In principle, there will be three athletes who will start from Nerja and will swim the entire distance between the Balcón de Europa and the beach located in front of the Larios promenade in Torre del Mar, while others will join the test at different intermediate points, as detailed by the organisation in a statement.

Store expands THE Irish multinational Primark, has expanded its Malaga store in the L a r i o s C e n t re b y 6 0 per cent, resulting in a 6 , 3 4 5 s q u a re m e t re space.

This now makes the site the largest Primark store in Andalucia.

The premises still cover two floors in the popular shopping centre located in the city

centre. Primark’s success over the years selling high street quality clothes and accessories for very low prices is largely due to the fact that they spend very little on advertising campaigns and do not offer online sales and so have no delivery costs.

H o w e v e r, t h e d e c i sion to refrain from online sales has caused the Irish fir m problems during the coronavirus pandemic and has led to the closure of several stores as well as accumulating huge amounts of stock.

The reopening of shops in the easing of the lockdown could not have come soon enough for Primark, especially in Spain where they have 48 stores, 11 of which are in Andalucia where 1,800 people are employed by the company.

In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found. CAS will provide fosterers with all they need: food, medicine, bedding, leads, etc, as well as advice at any time. Even if you are only here for a few months a year, they would appreciate your help.

BLONDE AMBITION: A performance by Pasión Vega.

Flamenco festival ON Saturday, July 18, the Festival ‘La Caña Flamenca,’ in Almuñecar, began in the auditorium of the park ‘El Majuelo.’ This year the festival aims to make the Costa Tropical a benchmark for flamenco and will have four major concerts in Almuñecar and one in Torrenueva Costa.

Almeria flamenco guitarist José Fernández Torres ‘Tomatito’ conquered Almuñecar with a great flamenco show in the open-air auditorium on a magnificent summer night, where there was no lack of homage to Paco de Lucía and the memory of Camarón who got the longest standing

ovations of the evening.

The next scheduled concert will be on Saturday August 1, with the performance, also in El Majuelo, by Pasión Vega.

Diego Carrasco will follow, on Saturday August 8 at the Colegio Pío XII de Torrenueva Costa.

On Sunday August 16, Estrella Morente will be the main star of Almuñecar. The celebrations will be closed by Marina Heredia, who will perform on Friday August 28. Those interested can purchase their tickets at www.redentradas.com and at the box office one hour before the concert.

In the light ALMUÑECAR has invested almost €6,000 on improved street lighting.

The council’s maintenance department has installed half a dozen street lights with the LED lamps in Calle Gondoles, which connects the P-4 area with Paseo Reina Sofía, through the Las Gondolas Development.

Deputy Mayor and Head of Maintenance, Beatriz González explained the new 35 watt lights cover almost 200 metres in length.

“This will mean more lighting and lower consumption, as well as responding to the demand from the residents who use the street,” she said.

New lights have also been installed in the pedestrian streets of the P-4 neighbourhood, such

as Calle Manuel Rivera.

“This was necessary to reduce consumption and enhance lighting in

the area and is in line with the improvement campaign for the town,” added González.

Health centre THE Andalucian Government hopes that the works of this new health centre in Nerja are underway before the end of the current legislature ‘as long as the administrative deadlines allow it.’

The goal, according to Nerja mayor, Elías Bendodo, is that the works begin as soon as possible.

Likewise, he has regretted that there are projects that are pending “almost since we were kids,” such as the new health centre “that was a commitment of 20 years ago” of the previous socialist leaders in the Andalucian Government.

Bendodo has explained that the town hall is drawing up a new urbanisation project for the plot and when the land is ready “the Board will fulfil its commitment to build the Nerja health centre.” Meanwhile, he specified, the facilities of the current one have been improved, with a new physiotherapy area and works to create four emergency consultations with an investment of €120,000.

by DAMON MITCHELL AS face masks now become obligatory at all times in different provinces throughout Spain, it seems outrageous for the government to impose the luxury, or non-essential, tax of 21 per cent on an item that is now a health and safety necessity.

At the end of June, before the new law change, Congress approved the asking of the government to reduce the IVA on face masks, gloves and sanitising gels from the current 21 per cent to 4 per cent, mainly because at that time they were for recommended use and many families could not cope with the cost.

However, the PSOE and United Podemos voted against the measure.

The Ciudadanos political party’s proposal has had the support of the remainder of the political groups. It states that “if there was a c o n s e n s u s t o r e d u c e I VA o n books, magazines and electronic newspapers during the pandemic, there should be, with more reason, the modification of the tax in this case, since few things are more necessary today and irreplaceable than phar maceutical elements for protection and prevention against the contagion of the coronavirus.”

Ciudadanos Congresswoman Mari Carmen Martínez argued that many families now have an addi-

tional expense for the purchase of these mandatory sanitary materials. At a time when “its economy is already quite affected in itself” by the crisis caused by the Covid-19. The initiative is”a way to soften the economic impact of these new measures.”

PSOE argue that the EU Court of Justice prevents this and spokesperson Valentín García explained that the Court of Justice of the European Union already said in 2013 that the application of hyper-reduced IVA could not be expanded without modifying European regulations.

For this reason, it has asked Ciudadanos to withdraw the non-law proposal and to transfer it to the European Parliament.

EU recovery fund: “a great agreement for Spain” AFTER four days of intense and sometimes distinctly testy debate on a post-coronavirus recovery plan, the EUmember state leaders have finally reached what Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described as a “great agreement for Spain and for Europe.”

Spain is set to do pretty well out of the €750 billion stimulus package.

The country will get €140 billion. This represents somewhere in the region of 11 per cent of Spain’s GDP. Of the total amount, €72,700 will be in the form of direct assistance, a clearly pleased Sanchez commented at a press briefing in Brussels on Tuesday July 21 shortly after the deal was reached.

Mink cull amid Covid-19 fears

ALMOST 100,000 mink will be culled at a farm in eastern Spain after it was discovered most of the animals there had been infected with coronavirus.

The farm in the village of La Puebla de Valverde in the Aragon region, 125 miles east of Madrid, came to the attention of the authorities after the wife of one of its workers tested positive in May. Joaquin Olona, head of the Aragon agriculture department, said last week that seven farm workers had subsequently tested positive, including the woman’s husband.

Mandatory isolation THE President of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, wants certain travellers to undergo a mandatory quarantine upon arrival.

The president will ask Pedro Sanchez that travellers who come to the Islands from Catalonia or other high-risk territories, national and international, should undergo a mandatory quarantine.

This is one of the technical proposals that will be sent to the Ministry of Health next week. The Balearic Government wants health authorities in each autonomous community to be issued set recommendations with a clear guide that these travellers arriving in the Balearic Islands must stay in quarantine.

The number of coronavirus cases in the Balearic Islands is currently very low, barely reaching a hundred active cases, but health authorities fear that outbreaks will emerge as tourists from high-risk areas arrive, such as Catalonia and Aragon. Amongst the other requests made is the proposal for security and sanitary controls to be reinforced, both at ports and airports, alongside extensive information campaigns which discourage mobility.

The Balearic Government plans to increase the number of trackers to 400 to guarantee the traceability of all positive cases, but President Armengol also demands that a digital contact tool or app is implemented to support the work carried out by the trackers. It is also requested that the implementation of QR tracking tools be evaluated for places with a high influx of people.

Mallorca has also been struggling to keep drunken tourists under control during such a fragile time during the health crisis.

Mortgage charge decision GOOD news for many home owners in Spain as the European Court of Justice has ruled that many charges made by banks in respect of the cost of arranging mortgages are abusive and must be stopped.

In theory therefore all those who paid such costs are due for refunds and future mortgage costs will in the main be for the banks to cover.

There is however one caveat and that is if national law requires the person taking the mortgage to pay the costs, then that is allowed.

Bank borrowing THE Bank of Spain has revealed that Spanish banks borrowed more than €196 billion from the European Central Bank in June which is an 11.6 per cent increase over May and is the highest level of borrowing since November 2013.

Accused of Impropriety AN organisation known as the Good Law Project has raised sufficient public funding to appoint a top firm of London barristers to take action against Michael Gove Minister for the Cabinet Office and Dominic Cummings Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister.

What is known as a pre­action proto­ col letter was sent to the pair alleging that there have been irregularities in the placing of government contracts with a small public relations company called Public First.

You declare this income in the invest­ ment part of the tax return. For investment income up to €6,000, the tax rate is 19 per cent, so this would draw tax of €950. However, you can deduct your personal minimo vital from your total income. If you are 80 years old, this reduction is €8,100. You can also apply this reduction to your Swedish pen­ sion income. You need a 2018 law book and a Spanish tax advi­ sor.

FINANCE, BUSINESS & LEGAL ATLANTIA, the Italian toll road compa­ ny which owns Spanish equivalent Abertis has been told by the Italian Government that if it wishes to contin­ ue to operate, it will need to give up an Italian subsidiary Autostrade.

To make matters worse however, offi­ cials of all of the unions who have staff working for Abertis in Spain have called for a series of strikes on the Spanish mo­ torways during July and August.

They argue that as Abertis is not en­ tering into new agreements concerning members’ employment rights and pay, they have no other course of action than to call out all 1,300 employees on strike.

The intention is to target four week­ ends at the height of summer where staff will not be collecting tolls on any road managed by Abertis which repre­ sents about half of all of the Spanish toll roads.

To me Boris and Co have the most unenviable task o f t r y i n g t o re m a i n p o p u l a r a n d whip up enthusiasm from a population who seem to have almost lost the will to live; but then who can really blame them?

Over the years, the indigenous citizens have been swamped with illegal immigrants, torn apart with acts of terrorism, and watched their neighborhoods demolished and razed to the ground. They have experienced faceless skyscraper rehousing with different cultures they don’t understand and been consistently accused of racism. They have seen crimes of violence soar to record levels, observed the demise of free speech and all but lost their own identities.

With the country now being throttled by the coronavirus and surrounded by a whole host of ‘experts,’ who deliver up far more answers than questions, is it no wonder the people are desperately seeking out someone to blame? This week however, when the mayor of Leicester at-

CAMPAIGN: Will the name of the White House be changed?

tempted to pass the buck and blame the government for his local ‘slave labour’ factories which were deemed responsible for a new ‘spike’ in the Covid-19 pandemic, Boris, in a move that to me reeked of someone heartily sick of being blamed for just about everything, decided to turn over the whole responsibility of dealing with local outbreaks onto the councils themselves.

Brilliant. It’s about time both officials and

the citizens, who have grown to expect the ‘nanny state’ to pander to their every whim, grew a pair and began to take responsibility for their own actions. Well done Boris. Now you can blame them when they make a total cock up of it all.

Twice I have visited South Africa. The first during apartheid and then some years later after it had been abolished. I remember, during my second visit, laughing to myself about one of the country’s new

directives suggesting that you should no longer request a white coffee but preferably ask for a coffee with milk. How ridiculous is that I thought? Thank God that could never happen in the UK. Wrong!

It now appears that some of these insecure trouble makers actually want the word white eliminated from just about everything, Whitehaven, Whitechurch, Snow White; the whole shebang. It doesn’t even end there. In the States they are actually campaigning to change the name of the White House.

And do you know something, with the help of the luvvies and appeasing political correct mob; they could one day quite possibly get their way. You honestly couldn’t make it up. No wonder the true British populace never stops moaning.

With the lily livered politicians and authorities frightened to do anything in case they ‘offend’ someone, moaning and griping is just about all they’ve have left!

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I HAVE an Amazon account with £100 credit on it. I don’t use the UK site much as if I need anything it’s cheaper to get it delivered from Amazon.es obviously. So I contacted them, which is no easy thing.

I’m going to go off at a tangent here.

Why is it so difficult to speak to anyone from any large company? It’s almost impossible these days. You get offered so many different ways to contact them.

The one that bugs me most is FAQ. Am I really the only person that wants to know about this problem? Then being asked did this help ... no it didn’t ‘cos you didn’t answer my question. Anyway, I did, after many attempts, get a response to my question which was can I transfer my £100 credit to Amazon.es.

After all, I sign in with the same email address and password so they know it’s me. They even email me to tell me I’ve logged on to another Amazon site. The answer was no you can’t, end of. I tried to contact them again to ask why, considering the size of the company and

the things they can do including have driverless cars, but I got no further response. Surely it’s not rocket science to let me use my 100 quid on any Amazon site I’m on.

I was very pleased that my daughter, Dr S, came to visit for a couple of weeks. When I collected her from the airport there was no cuddle and we both sat in the car with our masks on and for five or six days she didn’t even give her daddy a kiss. We had a fabulous couple of weeks and when she went home on Saturday, Mrs S made her a packed lunch as we were not sure if there would be food available at the airport or on the plane. In her lunch pack was a metal fork and there was a long discussion on the security implications and how would she eat it if they confiscated the ‘weapon.’ Anyway she boarded and sent us a text that noone at security was interested in her fork, but they did make her take off her sandals and I’m talking about wafer thin almost flip floppy type of things and x-ray them.

Nice to see that airport security hasn’t lost its priorities. I could understand if they were crocs. Anybody wearing them should be arrested immediately!

DAVID WORBOYS OCCASIONALLY I feel older. It happens when some person, a thought or a feeling, reminds me that I am no longer young. Otherwise I am not aware of it. Anyway, I tell myself, at least I am not getting old. Like everybody else I know, I am merely getting older. And if the feeling persists I have to jump into action.

Action negates lethargy.

Languishing in bed until midmorning is not a good start to the day. Singing in the morning shower often seems to herald a productive day, refreshing both mind and body. Each day, we old-timers ought to have a couple of projects to fulfil; otherwise, we need a routine of disciplines.

There are several other ways to stave off the feeling. We can go for a walk, as brisk as possible, on steep, rough terrain, clambering up and down steps or slopes. This brings a rush of adrenaline and we feel

FEELING OLDER: It is helpful to remember the power of mind over matter. fine again.

One characteristic of ageing is moaning and complaining about things we cannot fix. We could associate with younger people, or those young at heart, who tend to be more positive and more tolerant.

We need to try to avoid dwelling negatively on better or more youthful times. It’s nice to reflect with gratitude on friendships, experiences and

places that have given so much pleasure in the past, but not with frustration that they are no longer there.

The haunting but sad beauty of Tchaikovsky’s last two symphonies is no antidote to ageing. Neither is music invoking nostalgia for past loves of people or experiences. Listening to joyful symphonies of Haydn uplifts my spirits. Similarly, New Orleans jazz, Neil Diamond or the early Rolling

Stones bring happy memories of the joys of being young - I mean younger - with no bitter regrets.

Personally, I need a good laugh every now and then, but humour today has succumbed to political correctness. I normally find Jeremy Clarkson’s style of writing amusing, but he is not to everybody’s taste. In the late 50’s I used to snigger aloud on public transport at the humor-

ous columnists Basil Boothroyd and Patrick Campbell. Some of George Orwell’s essays combine wonderful humour with the passion of serious social issues. If I want a change I can run old videos of ‘Fawlty Towers,’ Bob Monkhouse or Victor Borge. The important thing is to lighten up and not take everything seriously.

Observation of attractive women is a harmless rejuvenation therapy. We are no longer allowed to wolf-whistle our appreciation in public. But if the predatory instincts have subsided, we can enjoy female beauty in the way that we appreciate butterflies and birdsong. Well, kind of!

Finally, it is helpful to remember the power of the mind over matter. Just as a positive mind is capable of healing so many physical ailments and so much mental distress, it can also conjure up a feeling of immortality.

OUR VIEW Social U-turn

THE health crisis has brought with it many different and magnified social changes. As it began and we all faced a new experience of isolation. Locked in our houses away from the world and any chance of infection. During this time neighbours reached out to each other by congregating on their balconies at night to clap the efforts of the health service, groups were created to deliver food to the homeless or helpless and positive actions sprung from a great fear restoring some people’s faith in mankind.

We were all desperate to get out of our confines.

What happened? Over the last month, this has deteriorated.

Upon our release from captivity, things have descended into worldwide mania.

Rioting, murders, economic collapse and a U-turn into negativity. Facebook and Twitter are full of personal attacks and arguments with people who are really not educated enough in how to handle medical, human rights or economic matters.

Sure, we can all have an opinion but if we know that we ourselves do not know all the facts, shouldn’t we allow others to have theirs too.

The world is turning ugly. People are beginning to retreat back to their houses, why?

If they are to leave their houses they are to follow certain restrictions that make them uncomfortable, like wearing a mask, standing in queues two metres apart or not being able to enjoy other people’s company.

Maybe they will be caught in a riot, maybe somebody else will not be following health measures making them feel threatened.

Is there a happy medium? Should people be allowed to make their own choices?

The wearing of face masks is such an all-consuming topic just now but nobody has the power to challenge the government’s decision on the mandatory measures concerning these. WHO is sitting on the fence, even though their official statement shows that these masks can be more dangerous for certain members of the public.

The main thing we need to focus on is that we cannot get through this crisis alone. Together we are stronger. Tearing each other apart will not get us any further forward.

A time of global weakness is not the time to tackle all the world’s problems at once.

Remember, divided we stand, together we fall.

DEAR Euro Weekly, This most unfortunate tale started on Wednesday morning at about 09.15 when I rushed into Ferreteria Lopez on Mojacar beach for some urgent (it always is) plumbing stuff.

I was then confronted by a gent who, rightfully, but very gruffly, asked me ‘where is your face mask,’ which I had, in the rush, completely forgotten to wear, although it sits ready to use, on my car’s passenger seat.

‘I forgot’ I replied, which was then met with a stream of verbal abuse, followed by, it beggars belief, physically attacking me with a one-inch connector hose that he grabbed from the nearby display, all the while proclaiming he was ‘English.’

I raised my arm in defence, took two steps back, in trying to defuse the situation. I went for my face mask and finished my shopping, thoroughly shook up.

Beyond belief DEAR Euro Weekly, I live with a person (platonic) who is a Cuban transexual, born a man and known as Samanta she had her unemployment benefit stopped as her passport is out of date. Before she could renew, as not many unemployed have €215 to stay as a man or over €400 to change sex lying about, she suffered a serious life-threatening stroke culminating in three months in hospital. She has been home nine days and is wheelchair-bound, needs constant care and is now being refused both benefit and Cruz Roja food parcels as her padrón are out of date.

Add to this my incredible story of unemployment and lack of benefits, it is clear to me Spain is ignoring both European law and human rights. I am disgusted beyond belief at the treatment she has had but how can you send someone home with no medicine, no food or money in the house and not knowing if there was even anyone to help with basic needs, never mind a professional carer which she now gets for one hour a day Monday to Friday.

We Are The Creators Of Our Destiny how we were raised, and who we were surrounded by whilst growing up. Limitation, selfdoubt, procrastination, and a negative mindset is taught. You may have had an amazing upbringing with confident parents, however, an Uncle, Aunt, friend of the family may have been negative, may have installed fear into you unintentionally.

As children, our brains are like sponges. They absorb everything around us. If you see fear as a child, there is a higher chance that you will take that fear into adulthood. If, as an adult, you are surrounded by negative people, you too will become negative.

Wednesday: Collar is as much use as a walking stick to a walrus, so I’m compelled to take Fifi with me to the local convenience store and bar. munchies and decide to buy something to nibble on the bus ride home. Settle for a tub of celery. No fartons because I’m on a diet. Run into a problem.

Forgot you can’t eat while wearing a mask on a bus. I surreptitiously slip a stick of celery under the mask. Hearing me crunching, a little old Spanish woman whips around in her seat and glares at me.

Friday: Notice visitors from the UK trickling back into Benidorm’s Old Town. Some of them recognise me and come rushing up for a snog and a cuddle. I recoil and snap: ‘Where are your masks? Have you not heard of social distancing?’ They look hurt and retreat.

I feel really bad.

Saturday: Mount the scales.

Joyfully discover that the boiled egg diet I wrote about last week is having an effect. I’ve shed two pounds in five days.

But I won’t be happy until people start calling me Twiglet.

One ‘deal’ that has been completed is that a stadium has been secured for the Coronavirus postponed Euro Weekly Walking Football League Cup Final. This was due to take place last April but the virus caused all football to be cancelled.

However, on Wednesday, July 15, League Director Ronnie Waugh and Nerja Nomads’ manager Steve Lynton met with Nerja Town Hall Sports councillors Daniel Rivas and Javier Losada and after a very useful meeting it was agreed the final would be played at the Pepe Luis Bobadilla Stadium in Nerja on

Saturday, September 19, 2020.

(Subject to the state of the coronavirus at that time).

The final between Aston Viñuela WFC and Walking Football Spain ‘A’ will be preceded by Nerja’s first ever home league match against Benahavis.

THE owners of Watford have a history of sacking managers and then losing matches and on Tuesday night (July 21) a meeting between the Hornets and Manchester City played true to form following the dismissal of Nigel Pearson.

Fans must have been confused by the decision made with just two matches left to play and Watford hovering in the relegation zone when they tuned in to watch what turned out to be a demolition.

Home or away, the City are not easy opponents and having suffered their own FA Cup semi-final defeat against Pep Guardiola’s former assistant, now Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta, they were ready to prove something about their quality.
