THE annual Petra town Santa Praxedis fiesta which had been scheduled to get going on Saturday has become another victim of coronavirus. The council announced just two days earlier it had decided to cancel the festivities after evaluating the situation in the light of the Balearic Island government’s new decree on measures aimed at preventing the spread of Covid-19. The local authority said the decision had been “very difficult for everyone making up the Petra government team,” but that it was an “act of responsibility.” In a public communication Petra mayor Salvador Femenias maintained that his administration had been looking out for residents’ wellbeing from the very beginning of the pandemic and pointed out it was one of the few localities not to have registered any infections. “Now is not the time to let down our guard,” the mayor warned. The Santa Praxedis festivities had been programmed to continue until July 21, with the so-called ‘salida del Dimoni.’

PANDEMIC: The Mallorca Vice-President thanked the organisers for overcoming the challenge of making the festival possible this year. BRITISH film and TV director Stephen Frears will be honoured at the upcoming Atlantida Film Festival in Palma. The twice Oscar-nominated director will be presented with the Master of Cinema award at the event, which will run from July 27 to August 2. Frears will also take part in a talk and a master class. Festival director Jaume Ripoll promised this summer’s festival, which will be the 10th edition, will be the “most am-

bitious” to date. Speaking at the event press presentation on Friday, Ripoll explained this year’s festival will feature movies and documentaries and TV series. There will also be concerts and conferences. Screening and activity venues will include Misericordia, Ses Voltes, the Museu d’Es Baluard and the CineCiutat. The Mallorca island government provides financial and organisation support to the festival. The Vice-President and

regional minister for Culture, Heritage and Language Policy, Bel Busquets, made a point of thanking the organisers for overcoming the challenge of making the festival possible this year in the midst of the pandemic. Busquets encouraged the public to enjoy culture again as a shared experience, stressing that “organisations and institutions have worked hard to ensure safety and hygiene measures.”

THE annual clean-up of Santanyi’s sea beds netted some 3,000 kilos of waste materials this time around. Sunday’s effort saw divers from the Protermar association, the SEMDESA Santanyi Municipal Services Company, Calvia Civil Protection and Balearic Island Ports pull no less than three sunken boats from the Figuera cove. They also found a load of old tyres, plastic, bits of glass and all kinds of other materials which had been swept along by currents and accumulated in the area over time. In fact the divers pulled so much rubbish out of the sea that a crane and three lorries were needed to cart it away. Santanyi mayor Maria Victoria Klein said she was pleased at the success of the initiative. “It is a great opportunity to make people aware about the importance of keeping this paradise clean,” she commented. Santanyi Civil Protection organised the sea bed clean-up, which is held to coincide with the Mare de Deu Carme fiestas.

card-sized) remains valid proof of residency status and rights under the Withdrawal Agreement, even after the end of the transition period. Speaking about the introduction of the Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, Secretaría de Estado Hana Jalloul said: “If you already have a green residency certificate, you don’t have to apply for a new status as a resident in Spain, and the documents you already have as an EU resident in Spain remain valid. “And most importantly, as long as you are legally resident in Spain before December 31 your rights are guaranteed... I encourage anyone who does not yet have your residency certificate to apply to the immigration authorities as soon as you can.”

APPRECIATION: Visiting natural locations makes people value them more, says the Mallorca Sustainability and Environment councillor. MALLORCA’S natural attractions are at the centre of a new visitor campaign. Run by the island government’s Sustainability and Environment Department, ‘Mallorca te espera’ (Mallorca is waiting for you), is all about encouraging people to discover some of the locations which allow for a true appreciation of the natural landscapes. The department has opened its Raixa visitor estate in Bunyola, the Sa Dragonera natural park, and the Pedra en Sec and Art-Lluc routes. In all the cases, the usual Covid-19 health safety measures are in place and there are limitations on the number of people on visits to each place.

The island’s network of refuges will not reopen until September. “Mallorca’s natural environment is fragile, but we still have very well preserved areas. That we can enjoy them makes us value them more and conserve them in the face of threats like pollution or climatic change,” commented Aurora Ribot. “We have opened the doors to extraordinary places so we can all rediscover them.” She added, “This crisis has shown us that the protection of our environment is a priority.” The new campaign is included in the island government’s ‘Mallorca Reacciona’ Reactivation Plan.

Pastures new AFTER two years as Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Oliver has stepped down to join the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). Her exact role within the organisation has still to be confirmed. The socialist who is a native of Campos, Mallorca, 1961, has a degree in Biology from the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) and is an official of the Superior Body of the Community Administration. Prior to taking over from Matilde Asian in June, 2018, Oliver was deputy spokesman for the Socialist Parliamentary Group and president of the Tourism

Commission of the Balearic Parliament from 2015 to 2018. In 2011, she became the island’s Minister for the Economy and Tourism, during which time she launched the Mallorca Tourism Foundation. Speaking about her new appointment, Oliver pledged to “continue the dialogue promoted in recent years with the sector, to work to recover the strength of tourism before the pandemic and ensure that the benefits of this industry also mean an improvement in the working conditions of workers, also remaining at the service of the citizens of the Balearic Islands.”

AN Italian who ended up stranded on a rock for several hours in the middle of the sea off the Llucmajor coast is safe following a rescue in the early hours of Saturday morning. The 46-year old tourist had been snorkelling with a friend in the Cap Blanc area when night fell and she became dis-

orientated. A search party made up of Guardia Civil, Local Police, Civil Protection and a SAMU 061 health team set out to look for her after a call came through from 112 just before midnight. After scouring the steep and difficult to access Tolleric cliffs area in the dark they eventually

heard her calls coming from a rock about 50 metres off shore. An officer swum out to her and managed to get her back to the shore. The woman was reported to be physically unhurt, but in a state of shock. She was transferred by ambulance to the Son Espases hospital in Palma.

Tricky rescues THE Mallorca emergency services had a morning of tricky rescues from difficult to reach spots on the island on Thursday. Bombers de Mallorca firefighting teams and Guardia Civil were called out to two incidents at more or less the same time, around 9.30am. In one incident a fisherman tumbled about five metres down rocks in Punta Manresa in Alcudia. Posting alongside images of the rescue on Twitter, the fire service reported that the man suffered multiple injuries, including a possible pelvis fracture. The second accident of the day occurred in Estellencs. A man fell four metres into a water course, again suffering various injuries.

Handy app for beach-goers PALMA Council has launched a new handy mobile phone app for anyone visiting one of the Mallorca capital’s beaches. The app provides information in Spanish, English, German and Catalan on how full the beaches are, the new safety measures, social distancing, occupation of accessible areas, what colour flag is flying, whether the sea is rough or calm and the quality of the water. Commenting at the app presentation on Monday, Palma Finance, Tax and Innovation councillor, Adrian Garcia, described the new app as “a solution to a need which came up suddenly, the control of

maximum capacity on the beaches, with a large dose of applied intelligence.” Environment councillor Ramon Perpinya explained there are four beach occupation level classifications. Green means less than 30 per cent full, yellow that it’s at 30 to 60 per cent of capacity, orange more than 60 per cent, and red at more than 90 per cent, meaning visitors should choose a different beach to go to. Tourism, Health and Consumer councillor Elena Navarro meanwhile took the opportunity to highlight the importance of the joint responsibility of the council and the public to ensure Palma’s beaches are safe.

Leapy Lee Triumphs in Readers’ Poll DURING the time of lockdown here in Spain and for a short period after, it seemed that the expatriate community were revelling in the concept of a new normal in which neighbours helped and supported each other and joined each other on balconies to applaud the fantastic work of healthcare professionals. However, slowly but surely, as people have spent more time in isolation behind their keyboards and screens, there appears to be an insidious change. On social media, there seems to be a great deal of rather pointless arguments and sniping when people disagree with one opinion or another. It now seems that it’s not just confined to social media as recent defamatory comments made in other newspapers are a prime example of this trend. This has spurred Euro Weekly News on to take a serious look at what we allow to

appear in print. One important question we were forced to ask ourselves concerned long time columnist Leapy Lee and the opinion on whether he says what our readers think or is a reactionary voice of an outdated past.

Euro Weekly, therefore, decided to give our valued readers their say and created a reader’s poll simply asking whether it was time for Leapy to move on or let him have his say. The results were frankly staggering, with a massive

74 per cent approval rating from readers keeping the faith with our long-time controversial columnist. Leapy is his own man, with very strong opinions about a number of things, and although he has lived in Mallorca for several

years, he has never lost his affection for the United Kingdom and this is why he feels so strongly about the fact that it appears to have changed so much over the last few decades. In his younger days he used to spend a lot of time

in Ladbroke Grove during London’s swinging 60s and was a lover of the new music coming out of such clubs as the infamous Mangrove, he had many West Indian friends and joined in at the very first Notting Hill Carnival, which was a melting pot of London’s many cultures. He also enjoyed an eightyear stint in Saudi Arabia which he looks back on with great pleasure and insists he has no problems with immigration or Islam but absolutely can’t stand what he sees as the lack of gratitude and intent to assimilate once a small percentage of first and second-generation immigrants arrive in the UK. Leapy Lee may be Marmite to many but his weekly observations are not likely to either bring the western world to its knees nor inspire a worldwide revolution. Therefore, thanks to you. our readers, Leapy is here to stay!

Cuffed NEW ROUTES: The company is planning nine additional connections between the Balearics and airports in Italy, France, the UK and Austria.

More routes AIRLINE Vueling is set to launch new direct routes between Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca and several European cities next month. The company said it is planning nine additional connections between the Balearic Islands and airports in Italy, France, the UK and Austria in August, bringing the total number of direct services from the archipelago to 53. There will be new flights between Mallorca and Rome, Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Cardiff and

Vienna. These will be in addition to the services already operating to 13 Spanish airports, including Malaga and Alicante. Vueling also flies between the island and Paris, Nantes, Marseilles, Amsterdam, Munich, Stuttgart, Zurich and Lisbon. Vueling will be adding the Portuguese capital to the destinations it directly connects to Ibiza next month. There will also be services operating between Menorca and Paris and Rome.

POLICE arrested a 31-yearold woman for killing her boyfriend after he died from stab wounds to his back at the couple’s home in Manacor on the night of July 8. The woman, originally from Ecuador, reportedly told the arresting officers her 33-yearold Honduran partner had threatened her and that she had acted in self-defence. According to reports neighbours of the pair alerted the police when they overheard a violent argument going on inside the apartment in a block on Calle Sant Joan Baptista de la Salle. Several National Police and Manacor Local Police patrols and an 061health emergencies team headed for the property immediately. When they got there the man was already dead.

Pride festival postponed INCA’S pride festival to celebrate the LGBTI community has been postponed until next year to prevent the gathering of large crowds. The local authority announced on social media that the fifth edition of ‘l’Orgullosament Inca’ (Proudly Inca), has been put back from July 17 until 2021 in accordance with the

“current situation and the current safety rules.” Last year’s pride attracted more than 4,000 people from across Mallorca. The decision came at a meeting between Inca mayor Virgilio Moreno and Fiestas councillor and Local Police and Guardia Civil to coordinate safety for this year’s festivals for

patron saints San Abdon and San Senen. They also decided that other events bringing together large numbers of people will not go ahead this year. These include the Water festival and the Senen Sierro: Inca’s version of the famous San Fermin bullruns, which substitutes live animals with inflatable versions.

Save the seagrass THE GOB Ecological Group is once again running a campaign on Mallorca’s beaches to raise awareness about the importance of preserving posidonia seagrass and to explain how the public can contribute to its conservation. Every week throughout July and August the group is at one of four beaches in Portocolom, Alcudia, Colonia de Sant Pere or Andratx. They set up a small m a rq u e e f r o m w h i c h

GOB has also devised a ‘posidonia trivia’ game and will stage a lottery for winners to win a t-shirt.

The ecologists point out that posidonia is an essential marine plant on the Balearic Island coast, per forming many functions in the ecosystem, like oxyg e n a t i n g t h e w a t e r, providing a habitat for invertebrates and a refuge and breeding ground for many species of fish. It also helps to protect beaches in relation to sand formation and defending the coast from erosion during stormy weather.

Jail time A MALLORCA court has sentenced a young man to a year behind bars for stabbing a British tourist in the back with a broken bottle during a brawl on Magaluf’s infamous Punta Ballena strip. He was found to have attacked the victim when he was already on the ground after being hit by someone else, and of causing a deep, circular cut of around 12cms in diameter. According to reports he had initially been charged with attempted homicide, but the charges were reduced to inflicting bodily harm. The case dates back to a fight in a square in the early hours of June 2017. Spanish press reported that a bunch of Spanish youngsters got into a fight with tourists from the UK, and that at one point the defendant smashed a bottle against a wall to use it as a weapon, and stuck it into the left shoulder of the Brit who had fallen to the ground. The wound needed stiches and took several weeks to heal.

Mr Iglesias and Spokesman Pablo Echenique seem to have forgotten that they are no longer TV commentators and that they are now in positions of power. However, they have even created a campaign for the press and reporters

who have questioned them with what they deem as uncomfortable questions and coined it the ‘Press Sewers.’ These attitudes are more from totalitarian leaders, as when something disturbs them they will try to eliminate it from the public opinion. Creating space nowadays in the printed press to all types of voices is very expensive and not an easy task as many voices equal varied opinions which in turn is sure to, unfortunately, offend. Euro Weekly News, unlike most other press outlets, are totally independent and do not bear any political sign other than that of common sense. H o w e v e r, i t d o e s s e e m that some types of press are uncomfortable with the

over that of opinionated columns. Nonetheless, it would not be a community paper nor a democratic

free speech paper if this space was not made available to all. A judge has just had to out rule the Catalan Government’s confinement ruling of Lleida, pointing out that only the State of Alarm can confine people and this has to be decreed by the Central Government. What is concerning is that the way in which the Local Government decided upon this, by either acting upon ignorance or solely a decision to step on the citizens’ basic constitutional rights without further caring about the bigger picture. The worrying outlook is the way that freedom of speech and movement is being handled all around the world which gives the appearance that Covid has given a carte blanche to a totalitarian mandate.

I’m trying to make a point

THE British people are frightened. Many I have spoken to feel lost, adrift and vulnerable. At a time when they need the support and strength of their leaders, the older citizens in particular, feel they have been abandoned to a whole new creed of unfamiliar values and customs that appear to take complete precedence over their own. Is this not a terrible indictment of the UK authorities? Those who are supposed to look after the well-being of the citizens they are paid to protect and serve? Today I was talking to a friend, who told me he was recently attending a local hospital where he entered into a conversation with one of the resident doctors. The subject got around to the Covid virus and specifically as to why there were reports that a considerable proportion of ethnic minorities seemed to be more affected than their white counterparts? The doctor told him that in his, and most of his colleagues’ professional opinion, the reasons were that many from ethnic areas hadn’t followed the directions of the authorities. For some time they had simply carried on as normal, and, re the Leicestershire factory incident, basically taken

hardly any notice whatsoever of social distancing. But this is not the point I am endeavouring to make. My friend also told me that when the doctor began relating these opinions, his voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper and he began looking nervously around, in case he was being overheard. Is that not a frightening and completely unacceptable state of affairs? Here is an intelligent professional

man in an important and respected position, actually afraid to be overheard stating what he considered the truth, in case he is branded a racist and possibly puts his job on the line. And have no doubt whatsoever, had he been overheard by anyone who decided they were ‘offended,’ he would almost certainly become the subject of some form of enquiry and could indeed have lost his job.

Someone really needs to take all this soul destroying, opinion muzzling, racist nonsense by the scruff of the neck and shake some common sense into it. It is being used as a weapon. It is successfully eroding the very spirit of the UK and its people. The expression ‘Black Lives Matter’ is a blatant suppression of free speech. It is plainly confrontational and presents no opportunity of recourse or debate whatsoever. By contrast, woe betide those who choose to quite lawfully display the slogan ‘White lives Matter’ or even ‘All Lives Matter’; they have been chastised and dropped on by the law like a ton of bricks, either for racial incitement or at best far right activism. No wonder the indigenous British public is confused and worried. These double standards need to be addressed and rectified; before it is too late. The people I actually do feel sorry for are the genuine immigrants, who are attempting to integrate and truly are an enriching addition to their new, free and generous country. Surviving summer with bipolar

Anyone else struggling to keep up with their social life this summer?! MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED I LOVE summer. Lighter evenings, longer days, warmer weather, summer dresses, sunkissed skin. Generally speaking, as seems to be common with most people I speak to when the sun is out, I’m in a better mood. However I find the summer months to be an immense struggle - gatherings, beach days, pool days, BBQ, all of a sudden my social life is quite busy! The lighter evenings and longer days meant more time counting down the hours until it was dark enough to go to sleep, it’s exhausting ! The warmer weather meant more plans to try and not cancel last minute and, as a result, more excuses to make up. I sometimes can’t even muster up the enthusiasm to decide what to wear each day. Perhaps it’s all a little easier to understand in the winter. It’s dark, it’s cold, most people are spending evenings at home not really doing much. If I was having a particularly bad day / week / month, it didn't feel so wrong to get home from work, change into my pyjamas and stay indoors. Yet when summer rolled around, it seemed as though everyo n e was out a n d about hav-

ing the ‘best time ever.’ And then there I was, struggling to keep up. For someone suffering with a mental illness, it can be difficult to watch those around you enjoying themselves. I’d mute group chats so as not to be met with the constant plans. “But it’s such a nice day…” people would say, “you should get out the house, it might cheer you up.” A nice walk on a sunny afternoon might do wonders if I’m just having an ‘off day,’ but this is so much more than just an ‘off day,’ and a sunny afternoon isn’t a cure. Bipolar and anxiety don’t care about the weather, your weekend plans, or the birthday coming up that you’d do anything to be able to enjoy. It doesn’t think to itself ‘summer is here, time for me to disappear for the next few months.’ That isn’t how it works. I’m in the fortunate position of having friends I could be honest with. Friends who would still keep inviting me to things ‘in case I felt up to it’ and didn’t judge me when I stopped replying to messages for days or weeks on end. They’d suggest shorter periods of socialising that felt a lot less daunting, and remind me that they were still around if and when I felt up to going out. They know I don’t like to go out late at night so try to meet up early on the evening. Real friends do this! This summer, I am trying to take each day as it comes and enjoy the good days while they last. I think my own experience has also made me more aware of how others might be feeling, and I’d encourage anyone who thinks a friend might be struggling to try to understand and have a little patience. OUR VIEW Got it infamy THE latest Hollywood blockbuster gracing our screens and our papers seems to be ‘The Life Story of Johnny Depp’ or this is what Depp’s libel case against the Sun newspaper appears to be turning into. For those who have missed any of it, Johnny Depp has accused his ex-wife Amber Heard of being a ‘sociopathic’ abuser and denied that he is a ‘wife-beater,’ as was printed in the Sun. Whilst Heard claims that the actor attacked her, has a severe drink and drugs problem, and flew into fits of jealous rage. Videos and photographs have been used in evidence which in some opinions, look completely staged by Heard to show Depp in a poor light and goad him into interaction. On reading excerpts from the court transcript, Depp has already adopted the role of his Captain Jack character foregoing simple ‘no’s’ and ‘yes’s’ during being grilled about what happened on a flight where it is said he kicked a chair which in turn hit her and choosing to answer: “That’s quite a stretch of her imagination.” Or “No ma’am I wouldn’t,” and when asked about verbally abusing her on the same flight, “Not under those circumstances I would not. There are possibilities where that kind of thing might come out of my mouth depending on what came out of her mouth prior, but I did not go into a rage on the flight in front of all these people.” As for Heard’s role, there are witness statements and recordings that include her saying, “You got hit... but I did not punch you. I did not f**king deck you. I f**king was hitting you.” Also in a quote from Depp, “Amber severed my finger with the second of two thrown vodka bottles at me in the early afternoon of Sunday March 8.” Whatever you take from it, these are dangerous allegations and violence is no laughing matter. If you choose to think that a young lady was trying to build her acting career by marrying a huge star, abusing him until divorce which in turn elevated her profile and leave with some of his money. Well, that’s your decision. You might also think that a drunken, drug-taking rich man made himself an easy target and that made him angry enough to break a bottle of wine and get angry. We all deserve our opinion.

Here in Spain, we do not need to resort to using the Army, since the Local Police, National Police and Guardia Civil keep law and order to protect law-abiding citizens. Both Lampola and Platgetes are in a condition like I have never seen before in my 22 years as a resident. Lampola especially is a total disgrace. Access to the sea is very nearly impossible. Today I have seen numerous people risking serious injury attempting to enter the water, and my wife and I have had to assist several elderly people, trying with a lot of serious difficulties, to enter and come out of the sea. We have also witnessed many families leaving the area after a very short time, with small children, being denied safe access to the water in the soaring heat of the day. The townsfolk and restaurateurs etc are about to have one of the worst, if not the worst, trading year in recent times and yet the council is doing nothing to help their cause, by allowing the beach to be in this truly disgraceful state. Tourists, if there are any to come, will not be best pleased and this could have a knock-on effect for several years to come. The Blue Flag is flying in total contempt for its meaning. All this aside, the state of some of the approaching streets and the lack of cleaning and removal of sporadic rubbish is also something not to be proud of. I snapped ‘It’s precisely because I want to stop looking like Humpty Dumpty that I’m scoffing these things!’ This exchange occurred after my decision to radically change my eating habits. I discovered to my horror that I was having trouble buttoning up all of my lightweight summer shirts. A trip to the nearest clothing store confirmed that, during the Covid-19 lockdown, I had gained weight around my midriff and the only shirts that would fit were XL. Normally I’m a medium. I did better than most during the lockdown because I was accustomed to working from

you consume proteins, which take longer to digest. Hence, you will feel full for a long duration. The proteins also help build lean muscle mass, which, in turn, helps accelerate your metabolism.’ After vowing to try it, with some trepidation I stepped onto my Huawei ‘smart’ scale - it connects to a phone and tracks all changes in weight, body fat and muscle - and found to my surprise that, between August last year and the end of June 2020, I’d only gained three pounds. But these were concentrated around my midriff, hence the difficulty in buttoning up my shirts. Thanks to five days of the egg diet and some vigorous exercise I’ve shed two of those three pounds, and, by the end of the fortnight, with luck, I should be back to being fit, tanned, sexy and slim. Well, even at 73 one can dream, can’t one?

Olivier does enough Manchester City back in the Champions League competition! THE BLUES: Their twoyear ban is now over. THE Blues have successfully overturned their twoyear ban from European club competitions. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced that the club are cleared of ‘disguising equity funds as sponsorship contributions.’ UEFA issued the ban in February after ruling City had committed ‘serious breaches’ of Financial Fair Play regulations between 2012 and 2016. In delivering the ruling on Monday June 13, CAS said City did “fail to coop-

erate with UEFA authorities” but overturned the decision by UEAF’s club financial control body (CFCB) to ban them. A club spokesman said the decision was “validation of the club’s position and the body of evidence that it was able to present. “The club wishes to thank the panel members for their diligence and the due process that they administered,” he said. UEFA said it noted there was “insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold

all of the CFCB’s conclusions in this specific case and that many of the alleged breaches were time-barred.” The governing body added: “Over the last few years, Financial Fair Play has played a significant role in protecting clubs and helping them become financially sustainable and UEFA and the European Club Association remain committed to its principles.” Cas said also that the fine will be cut from €30m (£26.9m) to €10m (£9m approx).

FRANK LAMPARD admitted Chelsea were struggling with nerves after Olivier Giroud scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over already-relegated Norwich at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
