THE beaches of Mallorca resort Calvia have gained the distinction of meriting more Q flags for quality than anywhere else in Spain. Calvia mayor Alfonso Rodriguez Badal was in Madrid on Monday for the official presentation by Spain’s Industry, Trade and Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto of the municipality’s 15 Q flags for beaches including Magaluf, Palma Nova and Santa Ponsa. The distinctions are awarded by the ministry’s ICTE Spanish To u r i s m Q u a l i t y I n s t i tute. “The fact the ICTE has recognised Calvia as the municipality with the most Q flags for quality reflects what quality means for Calvia in general as a destination, and what it means for its beache s . As the mayor pointed out, to gain the distinction there is an annual audit of the beaches covering a series of service on offer and environmental quality. The other beaches qualifying for the distinction this year in Calvia are Bunguenvília, Illetes balneario, Cala Contesa, Portals, s’Oratori, Es Caregador in Palmanova, Son Maties, Cala Vinyes, Ses Penyes Roges in el Toro, and Romana, Tora and Palmira in Peguera.

Island reboot THE Balearic government has signed a grand pact with the islands’ main economic, social and political officers aimed at rebooting the archipelago following the hit from the Covid-19 crisis. The Reactivation Plan features some 100 actions structured into 10 core concepts, and a budget of nearly €619 million in just the short-term. Also participating in and making contributions to the pact were dozens of collectives from the educational, social action and economic spheres. The first area of the pact covers areas like health, education, social economy and health safety. It includes an additional €220 million for dealing with Covid-19 through actions like the incorporation of 800 more health professionals and monitoring outbreaks. It also includes measures for ensuring a safe return to the islands’ classrooms. Tourism is another core area of action. This section features plans for promotional campaigns and the diversification of products, health safety training for sector workers, and the reinforcement of air and sea connectivity.

Final goodbye MANACOR gave an emotional final goodbye on Sunday July 5 in the afternoon to the 47 people who lost their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, when State of Alarm restrictions prohibited wakes and funerals. Some 300 people attended the local council-organised homage to the 47, nine of whom were victims of the virus. The simple ceremony staged at the cemetery plaza began with music from cellist Miquel Àngel Aguilo and violinist Kepa Artetxe. Both dean Antoni Amoros and Manacor councillor Carles Grimalt said a few words. “I hope that little by little, this sadness that you now have is disappearing and only the best moments and the good memories that you keep of your dear relatives remain in your memory,” the councillor said. “On my own behalf and on

Decent demand

DEMAND for holiday lets in the Balearic Islands is at decent levels given the anything but normal situation this summer due to the Covid-19 pandemic, reports regional tourist rental accommodation association Habtur. The Habtur head Maria Gibert told Spanish press that bookings for the first fortnight of July are at an average of around 60 per cent. She pointed to Pollensa, Alcudia and the Santanyi and Felanitx areas as among the areas seeing the strongest recovery in the sector. Gibert maintained that bookings for holiday lets in the Balearics are significantly higher than for hotels. She claimed it is the tourist rental sector’s offer “which best contributes to economic reactivation,” putting this down to clients booking accommodation only and spending money on the complementary offer.

Population up Lowest antibodies rate THE population of Palma has grown by some 30 per cent over the last decade, the latest city census statistics reveal. Speaking at a presentation of the figures for Palma’s registered residents as at the beginning of this year, Citizen Participation councillor Alberto Jarabo said there was a 1.59 per cent increase in 2019, putting the total population at 456,088. This compares with a total number of residents of 349,691 in 2000. The statistics also reveal that foreigners account for nearly one in four people living in the city. In recent years there have been increasing numbers of citizens from other European Union countries and from South America taking up residence in the island capital. By the beginning of this year there were 53,378 registered residents from elsewhere in the EU, and 52,010 from other foreign countries. Meanwhile, the number of Spanish nationals living in Palma dropped by 513 last year. According to Jarabo, this is predominantly explained by Spaniards moving to other locations in Mallorca, or in Ibiza or Menorca, due to the high cost of housing in Palma.

THE Balearic Islands have experienced a less extensive spread of Covid-19 than other parts of Spain, but the archipelago now has the lowest rate of any region for people with antibodies to the virus. Just 1.4 per cent of the archipelago’s population have antibodies to Covid-19, according to the latest round of a nationwide Health Ministry and Carlos III Health Institute seroprevalence study. This compares with a national average of 5.2 and rates of around 10 per cent in parts of the

National Epidemiology Centre director Marina Pollan did however make the point that not being able to detect antibodies in a person any more does not necessarily mean they are not immunologically protected. She also explained the study showed the “loss” of antibodies was most common in people who were asymptomatic.

Monumental olive tree

A MORE than 1,000-year-old olive tree in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains in Fornalutx has been named a national monument. The AEMO Spanish Association of Olive Municipalities has chosen the tree as the 2020 Best Monumental Olive in Spain. AEMO describes the tree as having a “spectacular base which extends its ancient woody roots through a large area,”

and a trunk with a 6.5-metre perimeter, which “draws a sublime figure of great volume and impossible lines.” The association believes the tree was planted by the Muslims in the 9th century. “Today, in the 21st century, the tree continues to produce a crop thanks to the care and attention of its owners,” AEMA comments.

SOME five million air travellers are expected to go through Palma airport over the next two months, a high number, but still well down on last summer. A report by the AETIB Balearic Island Strategic Tourism Agency, which comes under the regional Tourism and Employment ministry, forecasts that two million passengers will pass through the Son Sant Joan airport this month and three million in August. The agency’s predictions are based on HOTELS, bars, restaurants and shops in Calvia which have been hit by the Covid-19 crisis can apply for a reduction in the rubbish collection service tax they have to pay. Pipe saving sea Field fire out A GIANT pipe under construction in Palma will collect, store and carry sewage and rain water to treatment plants and prevent some 500 tonnes of contamination from spilling into the sea every year during periods of intense downpours, according to the city council. Once the €11.8 million project is completed, the two-metre diameter pipe will run 3.2 kilometres at a depth of between five and 12 metres from Avenidas in the city centre to the Palma II wastewater plant located in Coll d’en Rebassa, taking with it 90 per cent of contamination which would have ended up in the sea. Palma mayor Jose Hila paid a visit to the pipe works on Friday July 3, along with Balearic Island government Environment and Territory regional minister Miquel Mir and the president of the Emaya water

SINGED: The fire burned through 1.5 hectares. A TEAM from the Bombers de Mallorca firefighting service managed to successfully put out a fire which broke out on farmland between Montuïri and Lloret just after 2pm on Sunday July 5. The firefighting service

reported they managed to cordon off the area and get the flames under control. The firefighters then focused their efforts on ensuring the blaze was well and truly extinguished, and with the help of tractors set about removing bales of hay from the zone where the blaze started up. Also helping out at the scene were members of Civil Protection and of the IBANAT Balearic Institute of Nature. By the time the fire was completely out it had burned its way through 1.5 hectares.

ON Monday July 6 the Spanish Government launched a new residency document for UK nationals who are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement - the Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero or TIE. This means some changes to the appointments process and that anyone registering from now on will be issued with the biometric TIE card, rather than the current green paper document. Spain is one of the first EU countries to bring in a new residency system for British nationals and HMA Hugh Elliott welcomed its introduction. He also clarified what it means for UK nationals in a short video saying: “ We ’ v e s e e n l o t s o f q u e s t i o n s and concerns on social media, so I want to underline two key points. First, I want to assure you that all British nationals, who are legally resident in Spain by the end of this year, will have their rights protected, including the right to live and

IT was a weekend of fines for boozy mass gatherings in public places around Palma. Local and National Police operations on Friday and Saturday night to prevent large crowds coming together with the potential risks of Covid-19 infections resulted in the identification of more than 400 youngsters for drinking and partying in parks and industrial estates and 235 fines.

Officers also issued 63 fines for failing to comply with health safety measures by not wearing a face mask or practising social distancing In addition police reported 22 individuals for possession and consumption of drugs, seven for disobedience and dirtying a public street, five for traffic offences and one for possession of a gun.

STREET art is adding a dramatic splash of urban culture to this summer’s Aftersun Market in Calvia’s Port Adriano. In what is the fourth edition of the market, 10 artists will be creating open-air works on maritime containers, either three or six metres high, using spray cans, paint and other materials. A jury made up of representatives from different spheres selected the 10 artists from among 38 who applied for the initiative. The idea is to have the works on show throughout August. There will be shops inside the containers, which will be open at the

Double jobless Racist insults arrest

WHOPPING INCREASE: There were 104.2 per cent more unemployed people in the Balearics at the end of June than at the same time last year. THE Balearic Island jobless figure for the end of June is double the number of people out of work on the archipelago a year ago. The SEPE State Public Employment Service reported there were 74,923 people registered as out of work on Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera by the beginning of July. This is 37,921 more than in June 2019 and represents a 104.2 per cent increase. It was also the biggest inter-annual jobless rise for any region of Spain. The year-on-year increase among the islands’ foreign community is even more alarming. The SEPE figures reveal the latest unemployment total for non-Spaniards in the Balearics is 19,034. This is a whopping 174.9 per cent rise on the 12,111 at the same time last year. The marginally better news is that unemployment on the islands in June dipped ever so slightly on the previous month. June ended with 396 less people on the dole than in May, or 0.5 per cent less. Among foreigners however the number out of work went up by 0.5 per cent, or 94 people. Services, the sector which has been particularly hard hit by the Covid-19 crisis, accounts for the lion’s share of the Balearics’ jobless, with 58,581. The second worst sector for people without employment is construction, with 8,140.

RACIST insults have landed a Palma bar customer in trouble with the law. National Police arrested the 36-year-old man on hate crime charges for allegedly directing racist comments to four black women, one of them a minor, on the terrace of a bar in the Santa Catalina district of the city on Friday night. The four women and a man who witnessed the incident reportedly asked a police patrol for help. They told the officers they had been sitting on the terrace when for no apparent reason the 36-year-old began hurling racist insults at them. They further claimed he had carried out some obscene act and even tried to assault one of the women, but was prevented from doing so when another customer stepped in. It was also reported that the 36-year-old told the police he did not want to share the terrace with the women, making references to the colour of their skin and saying he wanted them to go.

Explosive find GUARDIA CIVIL and Spanish navy explosive disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion to safely get rid of a submarine depth charge which showed up in the waters of Palma bay in an area popular with scuba divers. It was an underwater fisherman who came across the metre-long, Italian-produced explosive device and informed the authorities. Divers from the Guardia Civil’s GEAS Sub-aquatic Activities went to take a look. They cordoned off the area with buoys and put the relevant protocol into action

for destroying the depth charge. The explosive disposal experts, assisted by GEAS, moved the device to deeper waters, where they set up a perimeter and blew it up in a controlled explosion. Also last week, a projectile appeared under the sea close to cliffs in the waters of Menorca. The Guardia Civil reported it did not represent any threat to bathers. Again, the area was cordoned off and a specialist navy unit extracted it from the sea, although deactivation of the projectile was not necessary.

Party shut down CALVIA police shut down an illegal pool party in a villa on the Costa de la Calma after finding out about promotion of the event on Facebook. Calvia Council reported the fiesta had been organised by people working in Magaluf for the holiday season. They posted an image of a pool and a unicornshaped inflatable, advertising entry at €35 or €100 for the VIP version. Police determined the party not only lacked any authorisation or licence, but also represented a risk due to Covid-19. When nine officers pitched up at the property on Saturday July 4 in the afternoon they found some 100 revellers, a large amount of booze, a DJ spinning tunes and a payment terminal. They also discovered five people were in possession of drugs. Calvia Council said the organisers could be looking at a very hefty fine for a serious violation of the Activities Law, sanctions ranging from €30,001 all the way up to €300,000. Spanish press reported that Alcudia mayor Barbara Rebassa had decided to call off this year’s excavations campaign and the Antonio Arribas Archaeological Course in part due to the health restrictions stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic. Further factors were reportedly the failure of the Spanish government for the second year running to pay an annual €60,000 subsidy for the project and the slump in the sale in entries to visit the site. Thumbs up from under half THE Balearic government gets the thumbs up from less than half of the four islands’ residents for its handling of the Covid-19 crisis, a new survey reveals. Thirty five per cent of those interviewed for the Gadeso Foundation public opinion survey categorised the performance of the administration led by Balearic President Francina Armengol as good and 10 per cent as very good. Approximately one in three described it as bad. Just over 20 per cent had no particular view either way. In Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera the positive rating for the administration was more or less the same at 46 per cent. In Ibiza by contrast it was just 38 per cent, while 37 per cent were not impressed. More than 50 per cent of those interviewed gave the political opposition a thumbs down, expressing the view they

New autobiography LOCAL restaurateur and longtime Spanish resident, Garry Waite, has just had his second book published. The first, a novel based in S p a i n , T h e Wa r m Wa r w a s reprinted in 2018, but this tome is an autobiographical look at his life in two halves: Starting from his early years in the UK until his present day on Spain’s Costa del Sol. The story of an ordinary chap, from an ordinary background who made some not so ordinary choices in life: As someone who decided to move to Spain in the early 80’s and was determined to stay for the duration, put him in the almost pioneering sphere. Economic slump THE Balearic Islands suffered a “very severe” and “abrupt” economic slump in the first quarter of the year due to the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis, said regional Economic Model, Tourism and Employment minister Iago Negueruela Negueruela made the comments while announcing the islands’ GDP plummeted 6.5 per cent in the three months ending in March, despite having started the year with positive figures for January and February. Ibiza and Formentera expe-

rienced the biggest drop in GDP, at 8.2 per cent. For Menorca it was 6.7 per cent, and 6.1 per cent for Mallorca. This compares with a national average of a 4.1 per cent fall. In the Balearics the service sector was the most affected (6.8 per cent), followed by construction (5.3 per cent). The regional minister said he expected the figures for April, May and June to be even worse, but expressed the hope that from the third quarter onwards the archipelago’s GDP will start to slowly recover.

Caught with fake gun POLICE in Palma arrested an 18-yearold after he was caught carrying a fake gun and three mobiles and a camera officers suspected he had stolen. According to reports, the teenager was intercepted by security guards at the Jacint Verdaguer metro station last week. The guards subsequently called out the police. When officers searched the youngster’s backpack they found the phones and the camera. He told police he had come across the fake gun in a house in which he’d been squatting and that the camera and phones were gifts. But when the officers checked, they confirmed one of the phones at least had been stolen. It was also reported that the teenager is not a legal resident in Spain.

WILL THEY VOTE?: Region closed after an outbreak of 100 infected by Covid-19.

ISN’T it strange that the Xunta de Galicia has decided to close the region of A Mariña (Lugo) due to an outbreak of 100 infected by Covid-19, a move that will affect the 80,000 people who reside in the region, at a time that will overlap the autonomous elections? There are only six days left for the elections in Galicia and the Galicians with the right to vote who have tested positive in A Mariña do not know if they will be able to vote on Sunday, July 12. It will be the Xunta themselves that must clarify this issue, while the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) calls for the suspension of the elections in this area to give every resident a chance to vote. The closure of this region limits the movements of its inhabitants, who are prohibited from entering and leaving the health district except for work and other just cause. Of course, residents are not restricted in their movements and the closure of A Mariña does not imply house confinement. According to the Health Coun-

cillor of the Xunta, Jesús Vázquez Almuiña, all those who have a PCR that confirms that they are infected with coronavirus will not be able to vote. Their close contacts, already numbered 1,200, and who have a negative PCR, will be able to exercise their right to vote. They must come, like any other person, with a mask. Once they vote, they must return to their homes, where they must remain confined for the time estimated by the health authorities. However, and in accordance with the order of the Official Gazette of Galicia, which regulates the closure of A Mariña, the movement restrictions cannot affect "the exercise of a fundamental right such as suffrage," so it will be allowed to enter and exit of the region to vote. The BNG met urgently on Monday, July 6, and asked for the elections in the region to be suspended and the mayor of Burela (Lugo), Alfredo Llano, also proposes to postpone the elections in the region. Llano has been openly critical of the five days of confinement and rightly so. Two week review A HARD old slog for the sterling over the past few weeks. A mixed bag of good and bad news stalled sterling, leaving it stationary and unchanged against other major currencies at first, with it eventually adding a seventh of a cent against the euro and a quarter of a cent higher against the US d o l l a r. B re x i t a n d t h e B a n k o f England were the main talking points for sterling to mull over. Following the war ning that any post-Brexit trade deal must be fleshed out by October, Brussels and Downing Street renewed talks, ending early but with a new focus on a landing zone that could form the basis of an agree-

ment on trade. Investors have got the impression that both sides genuinely believe a deal to be possible, but practicalities could prevent it happening. A poll found consensus that a trade deal will be achieved, and that the economy will expand by 5.5% next year after contracting by 8.7% in 2020. As the UK prepares for its own Independence Day, when pubs, restaurants, hotels and hairdressers can finally start reopening, the week also saw two important speeches. One should have helped the pound, but it didn’t, and the other ought not to have done, but it

did. Off the back of those speeches on Tuesday, the pound was within an inch of being the day’s top per former, beaten only by the Canadian dollar. A solidly positive offering from Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane did nothing for the pound while a rabble-rousing per for mance by the Prime Minister a couple of hours later sent it half a cent higher. In other news, the IMF sees gross domestic product shrinking 10.2% this year before rebounding by 6.3% in 2021. The Reuters panel put those numbers at -8.7% and +5.5%. The IMF thinks euro zone gross domestic product will share the

Monkey labour IT is said that monkeys have been trained to pick coconuts for thousands of years in Thailand, but animal rights group PETA has revealed that this still happens and supermarkets around the world have been selling coconut water and oil from such sources. Many have switched from traditional milk products in order to help prevent cruelty to animals, but those people would be horrified to discover that some monkeys are kidnapped when young, kept in horrific conditions and made to pick up to 1,000 coconuts a day according to PETA. According to the group, Boots, Morrisons, Waitrose, Ocado and the Co-op in the UK have either suspended sales or undertaken not to sell any of these products sourced from monkey labour again.

Bank of Spain report by John Smith THE Bank of Spain has published its overview of the effects of the Covid­ 19 pandemic on the Spanish econo­ my and what it expects for the future. It recognises that the figures ex­ pected of GDP growth in 2020 will not be reached but highlights the fact that even before the lockdown, growth was sluggish. On the plus side however, it does expect to see a decent bounce back in 2021 and believes that the economy is much stronger than it was in 2008

and should therefore be ready to weather the economic storm quicker and with more resilience than previ­ ously. It sees a need to recognise the im­ portance of remote working as prior to the State of Alarm less than 10 per cent of the working population worked from external sites but it be­ lieves that up to 80 per cent of those not on ERTE worked online during the lockdown. This is a potential future strength for the economy especially if more technology savvy youngsters are able

Although not mentioned in the re­ port, it is clear that the government intends to increase taxes for wealthy individuals and companies to try to recover some of the billions spent in the first half of 2020.

Registering property In his book You and the Law in Spain for 2011 David Searl notes that both lifetime and fixed­term annuities have tax reductions. They must be declared in the investment part of the tax form. I have a Swedish an­ nuity with a fixed time of 20 years. I am 80 years old and I have been declaring the annuity as lifetime at 8 per cent. But I think this is wrong. What percentage of the yearly amount should be declared? Our solici­ tor informed us that the property was fully legal and the Escritura was good. Then we found that the house had never been registered for IBI, the real estate tax. We employed a lawyer to request registration for IBI. We spent thousands of euros on measurements and satel­ lite fixing. Then we were told that there is a Horizontal Divide on the property, which has to be legally removed. We now need a minor building licence to do some small repairs using a builder. I find that I cannot do this as I am still not paying IBI and because I cannot obtain an AFO. Could you possibly shed some light on a way forward?

Mortgage holiday might mean problem with new loan.

WHEN the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK announced that those suf­ fering from financial difficul­ ties during lockdown could apply for a three­month mortgage holiday (which has since been extended by a further three months) they inferred that this would not affect individuals credit rat­ ings. Whilst this is technically true, the reality is somewhat different as a number of British borrowers are now finding out as it appears that if they want to apply for a separate loan, they may well be declined because

banks have the option to check their bank statement and see that the mortgage holidays had been taken. According to the BBC, Vir­ gin Money has said that it will not let use of the mort­ gage holiday affect its lend­ ing decisions but other banks and lenders are prov­ ing to be less amenable. A spokesman for Halifax (part of Lloyds Bank Group) has advised customers to restart mortgage payments for at least three months be­ fore applying for a loan, so it looks as if what appeared a lifeline at the time might end up as a mixed blessing.

On that date, the number had reduced to 1.75 million workers and the numbers appeared to be dropping by around 5 per cent each week, helped by the fact that the Spanish government was effectively paying compensa­ tion to companies to take workers back.

Another possibility, being ex­ pounded by the think tank Reso­ lution Foundation is that the Treasury should give adults and children free vouchers to spend in the areas most badly affected by the Covid­19 pandemic at a possible cost of £30 billion (€32 billion).

I NOTICE the drug fuelled gangs around the UK’s cities are observing the social distancing laws in their own unique fashion. Not wanting to be arrested for breaking the rules, they are now maintaining their distance by shooting people instead of stabbing them! Three recent murders have been implemented by the gun. Pretty soon we will have an incident where an ‘innocent’ hooded looter (an undoubted pillar of society, who was such a lovely son!) gets shot by the police, when all he was actually brandishing at them was a biro pen. The fact that it was pointed from a distance at the police, who had to react in a split second, will have no bearing on the incident whatsoever and some unfortunate police officer will be hauled over the coals, experience severe trauma and probably lose his job, because he didn’t wait to get shot before defending himself! Out will come the omnipotent victim/ racist card and BLM sympathisers will use the incident to demonstrate their grudges across the land. Others will utilise it as an excuse to riot, loot and pillage.

An utterly disproportionate amount of non-white ‘guests’ will appear on the media, which will include multi-millionaire show biz and sports personalities, all lamenting to a suitably sad and extremely sympathetic presenter, how badly they’ve all been treated. Thousands more naïve individuals will ‘take the knee’ and the UK will have taken another step toward the total disintegration of a culture and society that millions of our

ancestors fought and died to create. Sad innit!? One bright occurrence in all of this has actually emanated from the BBC, who last week, somewhat surprisingly, ordered announcers and their guests not to show support or display BLM badges while on air. Apparently they, and a number of other high profile companies, consider the movement has been hijacked for political reasons after members criticised Israel and supported

defunding the police. Well I’ve got news for the BBC; it’s ALWAYS been a political movement. It simply uses the racist card to drum up support and encourage mayhem. I also have news for its supporters. The movement was originally formed by three black lesbian women, who not only insist on LGPT power, but also want to ban all black heterosexual men from ever attaining a position in the BLM leadership. So put that in your macho knee pad and kneel on it! I also notice that SKY has deemed not to implement this ban. Well, with ilk of Alan Bolton and Kay Burley involved, they wouldn’t would they? Thank you all so much for a positive deluge of birthday wishes. To be quite honest, actually managing to hit 40 took me by surprise; 81 is nothing short of ludicrous! Anyway I had a lovely day, apart from arriving home from my daughter’s party to find the dog had eaten my top of the range, sparkling new birthday present electric shaver. DUE to the pandemic with mandatory social distancing rules and heightened security measures, Liberty Seguros found itself in an unprecedented situation with regard to this year’s Liberty Race. For the first time ever, its flagship event took place online and delighted in achieving its objective of championing diversity and integration through sport. Raising an outstanding €6,333 for the Paralympic Youth Athletics Promises Team, the Liberty Race was once again hailed a resounding success. solidarity and unity whilst raising funds for young athletes with promising potential at sports level who have not yet benefited from the ADOP Plan. This programme is designed to assist elite sportspeople with disabilities in Spain to prepare for the Paralympic Games. As with previous years, funds raised through donations made by the participants of the race will go to the athletes in the Paralympic Athletics Promises Team. Supported by Liberty Seguros, the Paralympic Athletics Promises Team comprises young males and females from all over Spain between the ages of 12 and 20 that are living with physical, visual, or intellectual challenges, such as those with learning disabilities or debilitating conditions such as cerebral palsy. Funds raised through the Liberty Race help the athletes to enhance their level of perfor-

Provisional title: ‘MAY I lead you to the (Br)exit - Ten Tips for Purpose-Driven and Collegial Leadership’ (I made this bit up but you get the idea). Probably leadership book of the year, haha! But then some would say, if her predecessors have done this sort of thing, why

We’ve seen a number of unedifying examples of this, with the result that the integrity of the office is further

If asked, who would you rather be in charge of managing the current pandemic, I don’t doubt there are some who might even choose May over Johnson ... It’s not a death sentence! MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED FIRSTLY, I would like to thank all of the Euro Weekly readers for taking the time to read my column week after week – also for the letters you send in and encouraging comments on Facebook. A big shout out to Michel, Steven and red army at EWN head office for their support and hard work in helping and enabling me to get my story across and help others. I tend to write my columns replacing ‘me’ for ‘we’ - however this week I’m going to write about ME - give an honest insight to Ms Bipolar. These last two weeks I have struggled - yes, really struggled! I have used every bit of my energy and strength to carry on fighting this uphill battle. I have had my doctor on speed dial making tweaks here and there and giving me the professional support I very much needed. But I

have also looked after ME… I have laughed with family and friends, I have sunbathed, I have done silly T ikTok dance routines with my daughter, I have gone to bed early, made my bed every single mor ning and … ‘drum roll… please...’ not had any alcoholic beverages in three weeks!! These little achievements may seem unimportant to most people but to me, they are a reminder that I am still in control and I’m not losing myself to my illness. Just because one day, one week, or more of your life is rough, doesn’t mean things will be that way forever. I know the next couple of weeks will be tough but I also know that I am strong enough to come out of this the other side. I finally understand the gravity of my illness and when I need to ask for help. This disorder can be fatal if not managed properly I’m both a survivor and an advocate. I want to give hope to the millions of people whose lives have been affected by bipolar disorder. I’m living proof that a bipolar disorder diagnosis is not a death sentence. I haven’t just survived, I’ve thrived. And while I’ve had many professional and personal achievements, I’m most proud of my constant recovery. I am unapologetically ME! CoronaMoaners GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY A S w i t h t h e b e s t i ro n y, I ’ l l b e ironic, moaning, about those who moan. Or, the Corona-Moaners, as I call them. For the last 16 weeks, we’ve witnessed all levels of moaning; from those, who felt being ‘trapped at home’ was too much to handle. Those who felt, being unable to go to their favourite restaurants was a ‘liberty.’ To those, who found wearing a simple face mask, was the ‘end of the world.’ And of course, those who felt their lives may end, when they couldn’t get a b l o w d r y. O h y e s , t h e y ’ v e moaned. No matter how many lost their lives to Covid-19, the CoronaMoaners, just couldn’t help themselves. As the daily death toll, spiralled inter nationally, they kept Facebook busy with their rants. Late night chat forums were filled with bonkers conspiracy theories. If one dared disagree, they moaned. Agree, they found something else to moan about. Block them, they moaned, but luckily, we could no longer hear them. Those who moan, love any excuse to do so. It rains they complain, the sun shines, and it’s too hot. For this select few, the dreaded virus was the icing on the cake of negativity. They’re the same type, who spend every waking minute caught up in yawn-full, and certainly questionable, ‘debates’ in the comment sections. No matter the country, it seems the Corona-Moaners, found serious fault with every politician, medical expert, or person, who didn’t share their dreary outlook. Going as far as blaming prime ministers for the ‘handling’ of the outbreak. Of course, in hindsight, yes certain things, could have been handled differently, in certain countries. However, faced with a ravaging, and raging mystery virus, we, the non-moaners, did what we could,

Paying in cash is a nightmare MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man ANYONE tried to pay cash into a bank lately? If so you’ll know that it’s a nightmare. It’s almost impossible to get them to take your money personally. They want you to stand in the street and pay it in a note at a time. At the moment you can’t even get in the bank without queuing in the street to be let in one at a time. Of course, there is still only one teller working. Mrs S tried a few times and has found that every branch and bank has different rules. One won’t let you pay in after 11am. Another branch of the same bank will let you pay in anytime. One will only let you pay via the machine. But there is a way round this if you just want to give your money to the teller and done with. Let’s say you want to pay in €1,200 . They will say put it in machine. But if you pay in €1,201 they have to take the cash off you as the machine will not take coins. Job done. You don’t

have to stand on display outside where everyone knows what you are doing. Ryanair is at it again. My pal had several trips booked and had to cancel them all. He asked Ryanair for his money back. They said it could be done or they would give him vouchers which could be used at any time. He agreed to vouchers. Once they started taking bookings again he booked his son a flight to come over and tried to use one of the vouchers only to be told that he couldn’t because the voucher was not transferable. He tried to point out that he had the option to get his money back but took the option for vouchers at their request. They, of course, sprouted on about terms and conditions. So folks there is a lesson for you. If you get an option of a refund take it because then you can buy a ticket from any airline and not get tied up in gawd knows how many phone calls, emails and online chats trying to sort out a name change which, by the way, was only the first name as the surname is the same! I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks for all the emails. It’s nice to know you enjoy my weekly grumps.

So now, as we emerge into what we call the ‘new normal,’ life feels almost as before. Surely it’s time for the moaning to stop? One would hope. But of course, those who are finally able to have their hair tended to, now moan that they have to wear a face mask while doing so. Those who longed for pasta alla vongole, can’t stand the fact, that hand sanitiser must be used upon entering restaurants. And finally, to those who’ve whinged, moaned and cried, about the fact they may not be able to have their annual twoweek sojourn to the sun. Now that air travel has returned, albeit with restrictions, to the Corona-Moaners, it’s just not the same. And it’s simply not good enough. I look to the sky, and I plead to be spared from these dreadful people, for all eternity. However, as sure as night becomes day, I know my hopes are in vain. Instead, I continue to smile and be grateful, for all we have. And moreover, for the fact that my loved ones are healthy and safe. Keep smiling, keep going, and stay positive. As for the Corona-Moaners, I say, leave them to it. I for one, have far bigger fish to fry.

I don’t think I could handle it. Actually, I don’t think Spain could handle it. People would have to just work on through any virus now or there would be

With every ending conversation, email or text punctuated by a STAY SAFE, are we perpetuating our own worries and also projecting them on others whilst creating a constant circle of being scared. Stay indoors, wear a mask, don’t pay in cash, work from home. The demands are growing and we are ensured that if we do what we are told we will have nothing to worry about. Why should it take the threat of a virus to kill rebellion? Why should laws be created on the spot by people who have never had the experience of solving these problems. With our fear and obedience an obsession has grown, the world is magnified, your every thought and action is magnified. If you breathe outside will you die? Does that person in the street have that KILLER virus? We are desperately painting ourselves into a corner with an endless pot of paint, it’s time to crack a window and breathe. So have we been brainwashed, figures don’t lie, do they? The government would never lie, would it? We are now waiting with baited breath (behind a sweaty mask) for our next order from on high. Let’s hope that it is a habit we can break. It takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle change. We are now living a new lifestyle. Maybe our next order will be to take back our freedom, to think for ourselves... as long as we stay safe whilst doing it.

Masks mayhem Dear Euro Weekly News, I split my time between the coast where I have an apartment and an inland town where I work. In the hilltop town, absolutely everyone is respecting the restrictions, keeping their distance and using a mask pretty much all the time. Since the start of the pandemic, the town registered not one case of infection. I came down to the coast this morning and went for a coffee in San Pedro Alcántara. I was appalled at the number of people who were acting as if nothing had changed. Many, many people (mainly expats and/or tourists) were not wearing masks in a crowded street where it was impossible to keep any sort of safe distance. In the coffee house, people were entering and queuing without masks and were jostling together. The tables were not being cleared between customers never mind cleaned and disinfected. We did not endure three months of strict lockdown to have it all ruined by a casual disregard for others’ health. A complete lack of consideration and respect means there WILL be a second wave and those of us who have abided by the regulations and whose businesses face enormous problems will be the ones to suffer yet again while the uncaring tourists get to fly home. Heaven knows, we can use the eggs.’ As we ease out of Covid-19 lockdowns I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on how folk are dealing with situations no-one imagined they would ever have to contend with before the pandemic - and it’s been a fascinating exercise, especially with regard to the wearing of face

added to my collection: a little black number with a white skull that cost just €3. ‘Nice,’ he said, ‘but do you know that Swarovski are now making blingy masks?’ I didn’t doubt him because I’ve seen a number of reports of how fashion houses have reacted to the pandemic, but I wanted to see for myself what Swarovski was offering on the Internet. I liked what I saw, but not so much that I’d spend big bucks on one. On an online American medical supplies store I saw Swarovski masks being sold for $80. But you can pay way more than that. New York City streetwear giant, Supreme, is reportedly flogging some of the most sought-after face masks on the planet. Supreme originally began selling neoprene creations for just over $120, but demand has seen its designs fetching more than $500 on resale

sites. Casting my eyes around the empty streets of Benidorm, sadly depleted of holidaymakers, I noticed numerous stores - Chinese ones in particular - displaying eyecatching arrays of colour ful masks. But I take no comfort from the fact because, no matter how fabulous one’s mask may look, I feel suffocated when I’m in environments where they are mandatory and I begin suffering panic attacks. So, bus rides and visits to food outlets have kept to a minimum. And then there’s the issue of choosing the WRONG mask. In my case one featuring cannabis leaves. I dispensed with it immediately after I was approached on three occasions on a single after noon by separate groups of youngsters asking whether I had any dope to sell.

Ibrahimovic May Retire after AC Milan Victory THE 38-year-old striker hinted at retirement after AC Milan’s comeback win against Juventus on Tuesday July 7. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has suggested he could retire at the end of the season, the Swedish forward spoke after Milan’s comeback win over Serie A leaders Juventus on Tuesday night and hinted that he would make an announcement soon. Ibrahimovic joined Milan in January as a free agent after his contract at LA Galaxy expired, and has been impressive since returning to Italy. He has found the net six times from 13 games across all competitions, with two of those coming in his last two league games. The Match Report Milan scored three goals in six second-half minutes as they came from behind to stun Juventus, winning 4-2 at San Siro to deny the Serie A leaders the chance to move 10 points clear at the top.
